I FILLED UP THE JEEP WITH GAS WHILE STATIONARY AND OFF. I TURNED ON THE JEEP AND THE ENGINE TURNED OVER FINE. I STOPPED AT THE STOP SIGN WHILE EXITING THE GAS STATION, AND THE ENGINE STALLED AND THE WHEEL LOCKED. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I FILL UP. THE ENGINE STALLS FOR SEVERAL DAYS AFTER FILL UP ANYTIME I COME TO A FULL STOP. THANKFULLY, I HAVE YET TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT BUT, I NO LONGER FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THIS VEHICLE WILL REMAIN RELIABLE. THIS MALFUNCTION COULD CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENTS OR THE INABILITY TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY IN AN EMERGENCY.

BOTH REAR WHEELS ARE RUBBING WHEEL WELLS WHICH MEANS SOMETHING HAS RUSTED THROUGH IN THE SUB FRAME OR CONTROL ARMS. WE ARE 25 MILES FROM OUR MECHANIC SO NOW VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE TOWED INTO TOWN TO EVEN BE CHECKED OUT. WE NEED TO FIND OUT IF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR RUST AND CORROSION WILL COVER OUR VEHICLE. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 280,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE WHICH HAS BEEN HEAVILY DRIVEN IN A "SALT BELT" STATE OF MARYLAND FOR WORK DUTIES.

THIS IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE IN 2008 JEEP PATRIOTS AND NEEDS TO ADDRESSED SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. MOST REMEDIES SEEM TO BE A REP LAMENT OF THE FUEL TANK AND VAPOR CANISTER.

ENGINE STALLS AFTER FUELING TANK. DURING ACCELERATION OUT OF GAS STATION, CAR JERKS AS IT SEEMS THE AIR/FUEL RATIO IS MESSED UP. CAR STALLS WHEN SITTING AT LIGHT OR WITHIN A COUPLE MILES FROM THE STATION AT IDLE SPEED. I'VE RESORTED TO SHIFTING NEUTRAL AND REVVING ENGINE HIGHER TO COUNTERACT THE STALL. ONE INSTANCE WAS KNOCKING/ATTEMPTING TO STALL SHORTLY AFTER PULLING FROM GAS STATION, THEN OPERATED FINE ON HIGHWAY, BUT WHEN EXITING THE JEEP STALLED AND LOST ALL POWER TO THE SYSTEM (POWER STEERING AND BRAKE BOOSTER). WAITED A MINUTE AT LIGHT, THEN RESTARTED AND RAN FINE. DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THERE LIKELY IS A PROBLEM WITH THE VALVE TO THE VAPOR CANISTER AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE IS LIQUID FUEL GETTING IN. HE HAD A PROMPT ANSWER FOR ME, SO IT SEEMS AS IF HE'S ANSWERED THE QUESTION BEFORE WITH OTHER OWNERS.

THE CAR IS IN MOTION WHEN THIS OCCURS AND IT USUALLY OCCURS ON CITY STREETS SEEING AS MOST GAS STATIONS ARE IN TOWN, BUT THIS HAS OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY AFTER FILLING UP WITH GAS AT A STATION LOCATED RIGHT OFF OF THE HIGHWAY.

I HADN'T HAD ANY ISSUE OVER THE PAST COUPLE REFUELINGS AND THIS EVENING (3/6/2018) THE PROBLEM RESURFACED AS I ENTERED TRAFFIC AND MY CAR STALLED AND STEERING LOST. I ENDED UP STRADDLING THE CENTER TURN LANE WITH A PORTION OF THE CAR HANGING IN THE LEFT LANE OF BOTH TRAFFIC DIRECTIONS. I WAS ABLE TO FINALLY GET IT RESTARTED AND REPOSITIONED SO IT NO LONGER WAS AN OBSTACLE. AFTER ENTERING TRAFFIC AGAIN, IT STALLED ONE MORE TIME WITHIN A MILE AND THEN OPERATED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED ON AND OFF OVER 8 MONTHS BUT HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY RESULTED IN HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS. IN REVIEWING FORUMS FOR CHRYSLER/JEEP OWNERS, THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FCA VEHICLES.

THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAD HAPPENED AND UNTIL NOW I DID NOT KNOW THEY INCIDENTS WERE CONNECTED. THE FIRST TIME IT OCCURRED I HAD JUST REFUELED AND WAS PULLING UP AT A STOP LIGHT AND IT TURNED OFF WHILE I WAS STOPPING FOR THE LIGHT.

ON MY SECOND FILL UP, ON DECEMBER 29, 2017, IT STALLED AGAIN AFTER FILLING THE FUEL TANK AND DRIVING IN MODERATE TRAFFIC. AGAIN AT APPROXIMATELY .5 MILES. THIS WAS MORE SERIOUS AS IT WAS IN TRAFFIC AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. THIS WAS MORE A CONCERN FOR ME AS MY FAMILY WAS IN THE VEHICLE AS WELL.

STALLING WILL MOST OFTEN HAPPEN WHEN ACCELERATING OUT OF THE GAS STATION LOT INTO TRAFFIC. CAR WON'T START AGAIN UNTIL TURNING THE KEY COMPLETELY TO THE OFF POSITION AND THEN STARTING AGAIN. AFTER THAT, CAR WILL OPERATE NORMALLY. IF THE GAS TANK IS NOT FILLED TILL THE GAS AUTOMATICALLY TURNS OFF, THE JEEP WILL RUN JUST FINE. IF LEFT RUNNING A BIT BEFORE ACCELERATING OUT, THEN SEEMS TO BE FINE. NEED TO BURN OFF SOME GAS FROM THE TOP. I'VE HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE (5 YEARS AGO, 2012) AND SOLUTION WAS TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK. NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THAT WORKED FOR A BIT, BUT IT IS OCCURRING AGAIN. HAVE HAD IT DIAGNOSED WITH DEALERSHIP AS SAME PROBLEM WITH GAS TANK AND A VALVE ON THE TANK.

SHE LOOSES POWER STEERING AS THE PUMP IS NO LONGER RUNNING BECAUSE THE ENGINE HAS SHUT DOWN. JEEP DEALER SAYS THIS IS A COMMON SAFETY PROBLEM, AND THAT THE FUEL TANK IS THE CULPRIT. THE OVERFLOW VALVE ON THE FUEL TANK IS FAULTY. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME SAFETY ISSUE. THIS NEED TO BE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED.

I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE ONLY TO FIND THERE ARE A LOT OF JEEP OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. OTHER JEEP OWNERS HAVE TRIED TO REPLACING THE EVAP CANISTER, ONLY TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN SEVERAL WEEKS LATER. THEN THEY END UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT IF THEY HAVEN'T ALREADY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP PATRIOT 4X4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DECELERATE IN A JERKING MOTION. THE VEHICLE STALLED AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ON A SEPARATE OCCASION WHERE THE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE PERSISTED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE FAILURE RECURRED ONLY AFTER REFUELING AND WHEN DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. IN ADDITION, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED ON A SEPARATE OCCASION. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED AND THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED A SECOND TIME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. IT TAKES ABOUT 15 MINUTES TO FILL THE TANK FROM EMPTY AND WILL SPIT GAS BACK IF I AM NOT CAREFUL. CHECKED THE EVAP CANISTER AND FILLER NECK. BASED ON RESEARCH IT APPEARS THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE GAS TANK.

ABOUT A YEAR AGO MY PATRIOT STARTED HAVING ISSUES AFTER I WOULD REFILL MY GAS TANK TO WHERE THE GAS PUMP TURNS OFF. THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE AND SHUT OFF 4 OR 5 TIMES AS I WAS LEAVING THE STATION. I HAVE ALSO HAD SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT SPEEDS OVER 60 MPH WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS. IT HAS ALSO SHUT OFF MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE IDLING WHEN I HAVEN'T FILLED THE TANK. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE PURGE VALVE SOLENOID AND ALTERNATOR AT MY COST THINKING THAT WOULD FIX MY PROBLEM BUT NOTHING HAS WORKED. THEY ALSO RECOMMENDED I REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AT MY COST, BUT AFTER ALREADY POURING OVER $1000 INTO THE VEHICLE, I WAS HESITANT TO SPEND $1500 MORE. I HAVE BEEN AVOIDING THE PROBLEM BY ONLY PUTTING ABOUT 10 GALLONS OF FUEL MAXIMUM IN MY TANK. TWO WEEKS AGO THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD BANGING NOISE AND LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING ON THE DASH AND THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T GO OVER 20 MPH. LUCKILY I WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE FROM ANOTHER JEEP DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME THE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR WAS BAD. ANOTHER $800 FIX. I TOLD THIS DEALERSHIP OF THE OTHER PROBLEMS I WAS EXPERIENCING WITH THE CAR SHUTTING OFF AND THEY THOUGHT THIS MAY FIX MY PROBLEM. THEN ABOUT 5 DAYS LATER, UPON TRYING TO REFUEL MY VEHICLE, I WAS UNABLE TO PUT MORE THAN 1 GALLON OF GAS IN THE TANK. THE PUMP KEPT SHUTTING OFF AND GAS STARTED POURING BACK OUT OF THE TANK. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE ONLY TO FIND THERE ARE A LOT OF JEEP OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. OTHER JEEP OWNERS HAVE TRIED TO REPLACING THE EVAP CANISTER, ONLY TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN SEVERAL WEEKS LATER. THEN THEY END UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT IF THEY HAVEN'T ALREADY. I HAD JUST FILLED THE TANK AS USUAL AND DROVE ABOUT 500 YARDS TO A RED LIGHT. IN THE PAST AFTER A FILL UP, THE JEEP WOULD STALL AND "BUCK" AROUND 30 MPH, AS IF IT COULDN'T GET INTO GEAR, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A CVT. I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN, BUT IT DIDN'T THIS TIME, WHICH WAS CURIOUS. AT THE LIGHT, UPON ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE THROTTLE, AND THE CAR REMAINED IN DRIVE, BUT REFUSED TO MOVE. I COULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF GEAR INTO NEUTRAL. A RED LIGHT IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE DASH CAME ON AND BEGAN TO BEEP, AND THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD LIT UP, WITH EVERY LIGHT COMING ON AND MAKING NOISE. EVENTUALLY, I LOST ALL POWER AND WAITED MORE THAN AN HOUR FOR A TOW TRUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A THREE LANE AVENUE. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME A RELAY WAS ENTIRELY BLOWN AND BLACKENED, AND THIS HAD KILLED THE BATTERY. THIS WAS REPLACED AT NO COST TO ME, BUT HE SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND WHAT HAD CAUSED THE RELAY TO BLOW. ESSENTIALLY, WHAT OCCURRED WAS A SYMPTOM, NOT THE CAUSE, AND WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY SITTING, DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I ALSO HAD LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED AT 55,000 MILES, WHICH IS FAR TOO EARLY. I LOVE JEEP, BUT I HATE THE 2007-2010 PATRIOTS. BAD BUY.

I WENT TO MY LOCAL GAS STATION TO REFUEL MY JEEP. AFTER PUMPING IN 38 CENTS THE PUMP CLICKED. I REMOVED THE NOZZLE AND TRIED AGAIN AND IT CLICKED ONCE MORE. IT TOOK 11 MINUTES TO PUMP MY TANK FULL. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER WHO REFUSED TO HELP WITH ANY ASSISTANCE TO FIX MY VEHICLE AND STATED I WOULD FIRST HAVE TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC WITH A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP, (WHICH IN MY AREA NEVER ANSWERS THE PHONE AND NEVER HAS AN APPOINTMENT TIME OPEN) WANTS 115 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. I HAD MY FORD DEALER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE AND THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE VENT LINE IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK IS CLOGGED. ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, ACCORDING TO ALLDATA, THIS PART IS NOT SERVICE ABLE WHICH MEANS I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK WHICH IS QUOTED AT 922 FOR THE PART AND BETWEEN 400-600 FOR INSTALLATION. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE BECAUSE I REALLY DON'T SEE HOW REFUELING MY TANK WILL CAUSE THIS ISSUE.
