EVERYTIME RIGHT AFTER I FILL UP MY 2008 JEEP PATRIOT (CAR IS SHUT OFF WHILE FUELING) THE JEEP EITHER BUCKS ME BACK AND FORTH LIKE IT'S A MANUAL GETTING STUCK BETWEEN GEARS FOR ABOUT 1 MINUTE (IT'S AN AUTOMATIC) OR IT STALLS AND DIES (CAR SHUTS OFF). SO FAR WHEN THE JEEP DIES IT HAS TURNED BACK ON.. THIS HAPPENS NORMALLY UNDER A HALF MILE AFTER THE JEEP HAS BEEN FILLED UP WITH GAS TO THE FILL MARK. THE CAR IS IN MOTION WHEN THIS OCCURS AND IT USUALLY OCCURS ON CITY STREETS SEEING AS MOST GAS STATIONS ARE IN TOWN, BUT THIS HAS OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY AFTER FILLING UP WITH GAS AT A STATION LOCATED RIGHT OFF OF THE HIGHWAY.

-REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILED. THE ENTIRE DIFFERENTIAL WAS REPLACED BY JEEP THROUGH UNLIMITED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. PROBLEM SOLVED. -THE FRAME AND BODY BEGUN TO RUST. THE PROBLEM STARTED TO APPEAR WHEN THE CAR WAS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD. THE PROBLEM WAS BROUGHT UP TO JEEP. JEEP DECLINED TO FIX OR ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. -ENGINE STALLS EVERY 11 SECONDS. FAULTY CODE SHOWS: P2107: THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL MODULE PROCESSOR. THE THROTTLE MODULE WAS REPLACED TWICE. PROBLEM PERSISTS. THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING. VERY UNSAFE DUE TO LOSS OF STEERING. CURRENTLY, THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEABLE - PROBLEM NOT FIXED. 04/01/2021: ODI # CHANGED FROM 10896825 TO 10896752 AS PART OF ROUTINE DATA CLEANUP.

I HAD JUST FILLED THE TANK AS USUAL AND DROVE ABOUT 500 YARDS TO A RED LIGHT. IN THE PAST AFTER A FILL UP, THE JEEP WOULD STALL AND "BUCK" AROUND 30 MPH, AS IF IT COULDN'T GET INTO GEAR, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A CVT. I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN, BUT IT DIDN'T THIS TIME, WHICH WAS CURIOUS. AT THE LIGHT, UPON ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE THROTTLE, AND THE CAR REMAINED IN DRIVE, BUT REFUSED TO MOVE. I COULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF GEAR INTO NEUTRAL. A RED LIGHT IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE DASH CAME ON AND BEGAN TO BEEP, AND THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD LIT UP, WITH EVERY LIGHT COMING ON AND MAKING NOISE. EVENTUALLY, I LOST ALL POWER AND WAITED MORE THAN AN HOUR FOR A TOW TRUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A THREE LANE AVENUE. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME A RELAY WAS ENTIRELY BLOWN AND BLACKENED, AND THIS HAD KILLED THE BATTERY. THIS WAS REPLACED AT NO COST TO ME, BUT HE SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND WHAT HAD CAUSED THE RELAY TO BLOW. ESSENTIALLY, WHAT OCCURRED WAS A SYMPTOM, NOT THE CAUSE, AND WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY SITTING, DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I ALSO HAD LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED AT 55,000 MILES, WHICH IS FAR TOO EARLY. I LOVE JEEP, BUT I HATE THE 2007-2010 PATRIOTS. BAD BUY.

2008 JEEP PATRIOT BEGAN MAKING CLUNKING/CRACKING NOISES FROM THE FRONT END AT APPROXIMATELY 50,000 MILES. TOOK INTO LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND THEY STATED THE BALL JOINTS WERE IN VERY POOR CONDITION AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED VIA FRONT END LOWER CONTROL ARMS. AFTER SEEING WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO CHARGE, TOOK TO AN ALIGNMENT SHOP. WHILE DRIVING TO THIS SHOP, BRAKES BEGAN GRINDING. BALL JOINT FAILURE CAUSED BRAKES AND CALIPER TO BE MISALIGNED ON THE ROTOR CAUSING THE ROTORS TO BE DAMAGED. MECHANIC PRESSED IN MOOG BALL JOINTS THEY SAID WOULD BE SUPERIOR TO OEM PARTS AND THAT THEY REPLACE BALL JOINTS ON PATRIOT, COMPASS AND CALIBER OFTEN. AFTER GETTING BALL JOINTS REPLACED, THE JEEP BEGAN HANDLING POORLY IN SNOW PACKED ROAD CONDITIONS, WHERE THE FRONT OF THE JEEP FEELS UNCONTROLLABLE AND WOULD SWAY FROM SIDE TO SIDE, ALL WHILE HAVING TOTAL CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. TOOK BACK TO JEEP, THEY SAID IT WAS A BALL JOINT ISSUE ONCE AGAIN AND THAT THE INNER TIE RODS WERE LOOSE, BUT DIDN'T THINK THAT A SLIGHTLY LOOSE TIE ROD WOULD CAUSE THE JEEP TO GO FROM SIDE TO SIDE. PURCHASED NEW TIRES, THINKING IT WAS AGING TIRES. NO LUCK AND VEHICLE OVER TIME HAS BECOME UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON ROAD, EVEN ON REGULAR DRIVING CONDITIONS. TOOK TO GMC DEALER WHERE A WELL KNOWN JEEP MECHANIC WORKS. CONFIRMED TIE RODS ARE LOOSE AND STRUT IS LEAKING. VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY, AFTER EVALUATIONS AND INSPECTIONS BY CERTIFIED MECHANICS, I'M TOLD I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR 2 YEARS AGO, USED FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER AS IS, WITH CLEAN HISTORY. HAD THEM CHECK EVERYTHING OVER ONE FINAL TIME BEFORE PURCHASE. NOW I'M READING THAT MANY OTHER JEEP PATRIOT OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. I HIGHLY SUGGEST A RECALL FOR THE 2008 JEEP PATRIOT. IT HAS A CVT TRANSMISSION, WHICH IS A DANGEROUS TRANSMISSION BECAUSE IF IT OVERHEATS THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING IT ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY, LUCKILY NEITHER HE NOT ANY OTHER MOTORIST WAS HURT. IN 2014 JEEP CHANGED FROM THE CVT TRANSMISSION ENTIRELY, SUGGESTING THEIR AWARENESS OF THE ISSUE WITH THIS TYPE OF TRANSMISSION. WE DON'T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO GO THROUGH WHAT WE'VE BEEN THROUGH, GET HURT OR EVEN WORSE. I DO HOPE YOU WOULD TAKE THIS COMPLAINT SERIOUSLY AND LAUNCH A FULL INVESTIGATION INTO CHRYSLER. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP PATRIOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN REDUCING SPEED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON SEVEN DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 38,600.

ON A RETURN TRIP BACK HOME ON THE INTERSTATE, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED MAKING A "WHINING" NOISE. ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE A VACUUM LINE IS LOOSE, OR HAS COME OFF. ONLY HAPPENS ON ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION. STILL SHIFTS PROPERLY AND SMOOTHLY, BUT NOW MAKES NOISE. SEVERAL DAYS LATER, AND THE NOISE IS STILL THERE, BUT NO LOSS IN SPEED, MPG, OR SHIFTING QUALITY. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP A CONSTANT SPEED, THE NOISE ISN'T THERE, BUT IT APPEARS ON ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION. VERY PERPLEXED. *TR

I LIVE AND DRIVE IN THE NEW YORK AREA. OFTEN WHEN I GO ON DRIVES OF 20 MILES OR MORE IN THE SUMMERTIME MONTHS, AND IT COULD BE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 70 TO 90 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT OUTSIDE, THE 2008 JEEP PATRIOT BECOMES A DANGEROUS VEHICLE TO DRIVE. WHEN TRAVELING WITH THIS VEHICLE ON A FREEWAY OR INTERSTATE AT A LEGALLY HIGH RATE OF SPEED, THE VEHICLE OFTEN EXPERIENCES SOME MALFUNCTION THAT CAUSES A SHUT DOWN. THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY REDUCES ITS SPEED TO BELOW 30 MPH WITHOUT ANY WARNING OR SIGN OF STRESS. IMAGINE DRIVING DOWN I-95 WITH HUGE TRUCKS BEHIND YOU AND THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPS RESPONDING TO THE ACCELERATOR BUT RATHER AUTOMATICALLY SLOWS AND THERE IS NOTHING I (OR ANYONE) CAN DO TO PREVENT IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO WARNING. MY FIRST INSTINCT IS TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE SO I DON'T GET REAR ENDED FROM LARGE TRUCKS, BUT SOMETIMES THIS OCCURS WHERE THERE IS NO PLACE TO PULL OVER. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME AT LEAST 10 TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT THE JEEP IN SEPTEMBER OF 2008. I AM FEARFUL TO DRIVE THE JEEP LONG DISTANCES ON WARM DAYS, ESPECIALLY ON HIGHWAYS. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THE JEEP IS GOING TO SHUT DOWN FROM WHAT IS APPARENTLY AN OVERHEATED TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THE "TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE WARNING LIGHT" ILLUMINATES AT THE SAME TIME THE VEHICLE BEGINS AUTOMATICALLY SLOWING DOWN. FURTHER, THE MECHANICS I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO DO NO??T UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAPPENS. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE ON THE WEB AND LEARNED THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF OTHER JEEP OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED AS IT PROVES A DANGEROUS HAZARD TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD, AND BECAUSE IT POSES A SERIOUS RISK TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY. WE PURCHASED A USED JEEP PATRIOT 2008 AND WITHIN A FEW MONTHS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE STABILITY LIGHTS COMING ON WHEN WE SLOWED FROM HIGHWAY AND CAR NEEDING TO BE RESTARTED TO REGAIN POWER. THE TRANSMISSION KEPT DOING A WEIRD KICKBACK. THE VEHICLE WAS CHECKED ON THE COMPUTER REPEATEDLY AND DID NOT SHOW A CODE. ALSO ,THE OIL CHANGE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON EVEN AFTER OIL CHANGED. WE REPLACED ARMS , BEARINGS, STILL ISSUE NOT CORRECTED .( THE BEARING REPLACED TWICE BY DEALERSHIP A YEAR AGO IS STILL MAKING LOUD NOISES.) WHILE DRIVING CROSS COUNTRY FROM OHIO TO NEVADA THE ENGINE ABRUPTLY, WITHOUT ANY WARNING QUIT RUNNING. THE ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON; THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS NORMAL; I WAS CONTINUALLY WATCHING THE DASH TO TRY TO KEEP THE RPMS STEADY (WHILE CLIMBING GRADES) AT APPROX. 3000 RPM MAX. FOR FUEL ECONOMY. THIS OCCURRED ON I-80 IN THE MIDDLE OF WYOMING. FORTUNATELY ( LUCKILY) I WAS IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE SO I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE BERM. WHILE WAITING 1.5 HOUR FOR A TOW TRUCK I OCCASIONALLY TRIED TO START THE ENGINE. IT WOULD TURN OVER BUT NOT START. AFTER A 30 MINUTE DRIVE ON THE TOW TRUCK TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, APPARENTLY THE PROBLEM COOLED AND THE ENGINE DID START. THE NEXT DAY WHILE DRIVING UP A STEEP GRADE THE VEHICLE LURCHED. I TOOK IT THE DEALERSHIP IN RENO NV. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ALREADY IN EXISTENCE TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE IN THIS VEHICLE'S COMPUTER AND TO INCLUDE A NEW FLASH DRIVE FOR THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID. THEY WOULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE DRIVEN NEARLY 3000 MILES SINCE THEN WITHOUT A PROBLEM. HOW COULD MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP ( BRUNSWICK OHIO) NOT HAVE ALERTED ME TO NEEDING A SOFTWARE UPDATE? I HAD THE JEEP THERE 4 DAYS BEFORE LEAVING ON THIS TRIP FOR THE "LIFETIME POWERETRAIN WARRANTY" INSPECTION. THEN, 300 MILES AFTER THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IN RENO. THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILED. WHY DIDN'T THAT DEALERSHIP CHECK FOR WHEEL WOBBLE WHILE THEY PERFORMED THEIR COMPLIMENTARY 22 POINT SAFETY CHECK? WHAT'S UP WITH JEEP? MY 2000 CHEROKEE WITH 170,000+ MILES HAS NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS LIKE THIS; ONLY NORMAL WEAR REPAIRS. *TR

PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS BEING INTERNAL TO THE TRANSMISSION (CVT) AND WILL REQUIRE THAT THE TRANSMISSION BE REPLACED. THIS IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. *TR

THE SHIFT INDICATOR LIGHT SHOWED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ENGAGED IN NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SHIFTER AND SHIFT CABLE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,050.

WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (70 MPH) IN MICHIGAN, THE CVT TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER A FEW MILES, THE JEEP WOULD NOT GO FASTER THAN ABOUT 45 MPH. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY HAZARD WHEN EVERYONE ON THE HIGHWAY IS DRIVING 70 MPH OR MORE. AFTER PULLING OVER FOR 30 MINUTES, THE LIGHT DID NOT REAPPEAR WHEN THE JEEP WAS RESTARTED, BUT RPMS HAD TO BE KEPT BELOW 2100 TO AVOID THE OVERHEAT LIGHT COMING ON AGAIN. THIS LOW RPM LIMITED SPEED TO ABOUT 55 MPH ON FLAT TERRAIN. THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN IN PA ON THE RETURN TRIP, SPEED WAS RESTRICTED AS BEFORE, AND THE WARNING LIGHT DID NOT REAPPEAR AFTER RESTARTING THE JEEP AFTER A 30 MINUTE REST STOP. HOWEVER, KEEPING RPMS BELOW 2100 ON THE PA TURNPIKE RESULTED IN A TOP SPEED OF ONLY ABOUT 45 MPH, A REAL HAZARD WHEN EVEN TRUCKS ARE GOING MUCH FASTER. FIRST DEALER FOUND THE FAULT CODE OF 0208 AND DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE TO THE PCM. THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. THE SECOND DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT CODE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT SAVED. THE DEALER HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 4 DAYS AND SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SERVICEABLE AND HAD A LIFETIME FLUID. THE DEALER SAID TO BRING THE JEEP RIGHT BACK IN IF THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN SO THAT THE CODE WOULD BE STORED. THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN AND THE JEEP WAS BROUGHT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER. THIS TIME THE DEALER FOUND THE 0208 TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT CODE. AFTER 5 DAYS OF WAITING, THE VISITING CHRYSLER TECH SAID TO OPEN THE TRANSMISSION AND REPLACE THE FLUID. THE TWO JEEP DEALERS SEEMED TO BE COMPLETELY CONFUSED ABOUT WHETHER THIS CVT TRANSMISSION HAS LIFETIME FLUID OR WHETHER IT COULD BE SERVICED. THE CVT TRANSMISSION ON THIS 2008 PATRIOT HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTY, BUT CHRYSLER APPEARS TO HAVE NO INTEREST IN REPLACING IT EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, (THIS THE SECOND TRANSMISSION SINCE BOUGHT) THEY BASICALLY TELL ME THAT IT NEEDS TO COMPLETELY FAIL BEFORE THEY WILL DO SOMETHING. THEN THEY COME BACK AND SAY THAT THEY CAN REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES BECAUSE THEY MIGHT BE LEAKING FOR $410.00. AND THEY ALSO SAY THAT MY FRONT RIGHT AND LEFT CONTROL ARMS ARE BAD WHICH OF COURSE THEY CAN BE REPLACED FOR $845.00. SO FOR A PROBLEM THAT WAS UNDER WARRANTY THEY WOULD NOT FIX BUT THEY WOULD LIKE TO FIX OTHER ISSUES THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE BAD FOR A PRICE.......VERY DISAPPOINTED IN DODGE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP PATRIOT 4X4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, SHE NOTICED A LOUD GRINDING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE TRANSMISSION. APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES LATER THE TRANSMISSION EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED A SECOND TIME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND HAD NOT YET RESPONDED TO THE CONTACT'S CONCERNS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 42,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 66,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP PATRIOT 4X4. WHILE DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 70 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED CAUSING THE VEHICLE SPEED TO INDEPENDENTLY DROP FROM 70 TO 40 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE FAILURE. THE COMPUTER WAS RESET HOWEVER THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE COULD ONLY BE DIAGNOSED WHILE IT OCCURRED. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 142,000.

2008 JEEP PATRIOT 5 SPEED MANUALS ARE HAVING CLUTCH RELATED ISSUES CAUSED MY CLUTCH MASTER OR SLAVE CYLNDER FAILURES. THE VEHICLE SUDDNELY STOPS OR NOT ABLE TO CHANGE GEAR WHILE DRIVING. I WAS LUCKY THAT I HAD THAT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS IN MY PARKING. THE CLUTCH RESERVOR IS SHARED WITH BRAKE AND CLUTCH. THERE ARE SO MANY 2008 PATRIOT OWNERS WHO ARE HAVING SAME PROBLEMS. IN ADDITION, WHEN EITHER CLUTCH OR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER FAILS, BRAKE FAILS TOO. I HAD TWO ACCIDENTES EARLIER WHEN BRAKES DIDN'T WORK. I TOOK MY 2008 PATROT TO DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSIDER AS WEAR-TEAR ITEM, BUT IS IS NOT. THE CLUTCH PLATE IS WEAR-TEAR NOT A CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER. CHRYSLER JEEP DEALERS ARE CHEATING CONSUMERS BY NOT HONORING LIFETIME POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. PLEASE READ THIS JEEP PATRIOT FORUM TO FIND SO MANY LIKE ME HAVING SAME ISSUES. WHEN SHE RESTED HER HAND, SHE WOULD REPEATEDLY KNOCK THE SHIFTER OUT OF ITS INTENDED POSITION. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN PROPERLY REMEDIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,700.
