I HAVE JUST START EXPERIENCING WHAT IS KNOWN AS DEATH WOBBLE, IN THE MIDDLE OF MY TRIP FROM COLORADO TO VIRGINIA AND THE JEEP HAS BEEN SHAKING VIOLENTLY AT RANDOM INTERVALS ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS KNOWN AS I SEEN OVER 200 COMPLAINTS ONLINE AND CHRYSLER REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND RECALL THESE JEEPS . I AM TAKING TO DEALER BUT I WON'T STOP UNTIL CHRYSLER REIMBURSES FOR THESE REPAIRS AND WANT OTHER PEOPLE INCLUDED THE GOVERNMENT TO LOOK INTO THIS. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT THIS IS NOT RIGHT THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING 60MPH WHEN THE CAR STARTED SHAKING VIGOROUSLY. I'VE TAKEN THIS TO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES AND THEY CANNOT FIX IT. THIS HAPPENS AT LEAST 3 TIMES PER WEEK. WITHIN A COUPLE WEEKS OF DRIVING I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 65 MPH AND HIT A SMALL BRIDGE BUMP, THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY. I HAD TO PULL OVER. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT. THE SHAKING WAS STILL THERE JUST NOT AS VIOLENT. IN THE PAST 7 YEARS I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY SAY THEY FIXED IT AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN OUT THEY CHARGED ME OVER $3,000.00 TO FIX IT. AGAIN GOT A LITTLE BETTER FOR AWHILE, THE SHAKING WASN'T AS BAD. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT BACK THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAD SOMEONE TAKE A VIDEO ON THE INTERSTATE AFTER I HIT A BRIDGE BUMP SHOWING VIOLENT SHAKING AND DANGEROUS CONTROL. I SHOWED THE DEALERSHIP THE PROBLEM THEY SAID THEY HAVE SEEN IT BEFORE AND TOLD ME TO CALL CHRYSLER. I CALLED THEM THEY SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF THAT PROBLEM BUT WOULD GET BACK TO ME IN A WEEK. TWO WEEKS WENT BY SO I CALLED THEM AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND BRING IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH TOLD ME TO CALL THEM. I AM DRIVING A DEATH TRAP ON THE INTERSTATE AND NO ONE WILL IDENTIFY AND FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAD DEATH WOBBLE FROM POORLY MADE PARTS. STEERING STABILIZER IS WAS TO SMALL TO HANDLE EVERYDAY DRIVING AND THE BALL JOINTS ARE JUNK. 600 BUCKS LATER I FIGURED IT OUT SINCE THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE AND TALKING TO MECHANIC FRIENDS IT'S A COMMON REPLACEMENT SINCE THE COMPANY USES CHEAP PARTS. ALSO HAVE LOTS OF ISSUES WITH THE ESP, EGR VALVE, FALSE CODES FROM EGR AND O2 SENSORS. AND TODAY MY AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS GONE OFF. AND EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET GAS IT'S SPILLS OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE AND THE THROW OUT BEARING WHINES WHICH I WAS TOLD IS ALSO JUNK AND CAN FAIL RIGHT FROM PURCHASE TO OVER 100,000 MILES. WHILE TRAVELING DOWN A 35 MPH COUNTY ROAD, I WENT INTO A SMALL TURN AND MY JEEP STARTED VIOLENTLY SHAKING TO THE POINT THAT I COULD NOT CONTROL THE STEERING. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE WEB AND HAVE SEEN IT OFTEN CALLED "DEATH WOBBLE". I MANAGED TO PULL OVER INTO A CHURCH PARKING LOT AND DECIDED TO TURN AROUND AND TAKE IT BACK HOME. ONCE I GOT GOING, THE STEERING WHEEL AGAIN BEGAN VIOLENTLY SHAKING AND AGAIN I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I CALLED MY HUSBAND TO COME GET ME BECAUSE I WAS NOT DRIVING THIS VEHICLE ANYMORE LIKE THIS. HE CRAWLED UNDER THE JEEP AND NOTICED THE WELDS OF THE STEERING STABILIZER BRACKET HAD COMPLETELY BROKEN OFF FROM THE FRONT AXLE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. ON OCT 11, 2011, I LOST CONTROL OF THE JEEP AND RAN OFF THE ROAD INTO A DITCH. THERE WAS $4000 WORTH OF DAMAGE INCLUDING REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT AXLE BECAUSE THE STEERING STABILIZER BRACKET HAD SEPARATED FROM THE AXLE! I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 2 DIFFERENT JEEP DEALERSHIPS; ONE IN SAN DIEGO AND ONE IN LA. THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I REPLACED THE SHOCKS, TIRES, AND DAMPER ALONG WITH MULTIPLE ALIGNMENTS AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. I'M SO AFRAID TO DRIVE IT THAT I RENTED A CAR.

I LIVE IN A REMOTE AREA IN ALASKA WHERE THE NEAREST CITY IS 100 MILES, ONLY REACHED BY HIGHWAY. EACH TRIP I WOULD HIT A BUMP AND ALMOST HIT THE GUARD RAIL AT 65 MPH. I STOPPED DRIVING IT UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO ON MY WAY BACK HOME FROM WORK (10 MILES FROM HOME) IT HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE SPEED OF 35-55. IT WAS COMPLETELY VIOLENT SHAKING WHERE EACH TIME I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL IT. IT ONLY GOT WORSE WITH BRAKING. THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS UNCONTROLLABLE. I AM SURE THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM AND REPORTED IT. WHAT OTHER REASON WOULD THERE BE FOR SUCH LOW MILEAGE. WHEN WE WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP ONLY A MONTH LATER TO REPORT THE PROBLEM OF THE FRIGHTENING WOBBLE WHEN HITTING SMALL POTHOLE HE SMILED AND SAID "OH YEAH THAT'S THE (DEATH WOBBLE)". AND THEN HE TOLD ME THAT IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THEREFORE WE ARE STUCK BECAUSE WE COULD NOT PASS THIS VEHICLE ON IN GOOD CONSCIENCE TO ANYONE AND THAT IS OVER A $20,000 LOSS TO THE CONSUMER. I WANT TO KNOW WHY SOMETHING THAT CAN CAUSE THIS KIND OF ACCIDENT PROMOTING INCIDENT NOT TO BE REPORTED TO THE NEXT PURCHASER OF THAT PARTICULAR VEHICLE OR REPAIRED BY THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE RESALE. THE PROBLEM HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE AND THE VEHICLE IS NOW UNSAFE TO DRIVE ABOVE 45MPH DUE TO THE WOBBLE THAT WILL YANK THE STEERING WHEEL OUT OF YOUR HANDS AND SHAKE THE VEHICLE ALL OVER THE ROAD. JEEP HAS ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE VEHICLE BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE MAKING THE VEHICLE BASICALLY UNUSABLE AND DANGEROUS. A GOOGLE SEARCH OF THIS PROBLEM REVEALS THAT IT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE WRANGLER AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED TO FIX THIS VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. WHEN DRIVING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 40MPH & 65MPH, IF I HIT A POT-HOLE (ESPECIALLY ON A CURVE), THE FRONT-END OF MY JEEP STARTS SHAKING VIOLENTLY TO THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. IN A FEW INSTANCES, I WAS ON A HIGHWAY THAT DID NOT HAVE A SHOULDER AND I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE READ THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE WHO ALSO DRIVE JEEP WRANGLERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE MADE FROM 2005-2008. WHEN I ORIGINALLY COMPLAINED TO JEEP/CHRYSLER, I WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY INSISTED I JUST NEEDED AN ALIGNMENT AND NEW TIRES. THIS ONLY MASKED THE PROBLEM FOR A FEW MONTHS UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. BY THE TIME I WENT BACK TO JEEP, I WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND THEREFORE, COULD NOT FILE A COMPLAINT UNDER THE LEMON LAW. THIS HAS GIVEN ME ANXIETY TO THE POINT WHERE I NOW HAVE AN ULCER FROM HAVING TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY TO WORK 25 MILES EACH WAY. PLEASE HELP, BEFORE I OR OTHERS DIE FROM THIS ISSUE. *TR
IN 208 I PURCHASED A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER, WITH 11,000 MILES, AFTER DRIVING ONLY 1,000. MILES MY FRONT END STARTING WOBBLING VIOLENTLY, RETURNED TO DEALER AND THEY STATED MY TIRES NEEDED TO BE ROAD FORCED BALANCE, WITHIN 3 MONTHS WHILE DRIVING TO WORK GOING ABOUT 45MPH THE TRUCK FRONT END DID THE KNOW DEATH WOBBLE, RETURNED TO THE DEALER ONLY TO BE TOLD MY TIRES WERE CUPPED, PURCHASED NEW TIRES, SEEM TO ELEVATE THE PROBLEM, ONLY FOR IT TO HAPPEN SEVERAL MORE TIMES AND TWO ADDITIONAL SET OF TIRES. I AM NOW DRIVING ON A SET OF TIRES THAT IS LESS THAN A YEAR OLD, AND HAVING THE SAME ISSUES, WAS ON THE INTERSTATE LAST WEEK DRIVING ABOUT 70MPH WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE MY FRONT END STARTED TO WOBBLE OUT OF CONTROL, I DID MANAGE TO SLOW DOWN ENOUGH BUT WAS SHIFTED INTO ANOTHER LANE, COULD NOT CONTROL THE STEERING, WAS LUCKY THE INTERSTATE WAS NOT BUSY, THIS COULD OF RESULTED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED ON THE SUSPENSION, THE 2010-2011 JEEPS HAVE HAD ONE SO OBVIOUSLY CHRYSLER IS AWARE THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT END SUSPENSION. FIRST OCCURRENCE IN MARCH 2009 AT 24,575 MILES, DEALER DETERMINED IT WAS THE STEERING DAMPENER, REPLACED. SECOND OCCURRENCE IN SEPTEMBER 2010 AT 27,929 MILES, DEALER REPLACED THE DAMPENER AND UPDATED MOUNTING BRACKET. THIRD OCCURRENCE APRIL 2011 AT 33,845 MILES (ONLY 5,916 MILES ON SECOND REPLACEMENT). DEALER REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE IT WAS OVER THE 12 MONTH PART WARRANTY. CONTACTED CHRYSLER COMPLAINT RESOLUTION, SAME ANSWER. THEY STATED THEY CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO SAID THEY REFUSED REPAIR DUE TO "EXCESSIVE OFF-ROAD USAGE". VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN USED OFF ROAD SINCE THE SECOND REPLACEMENT AND THE DEALER HAS NOT SEEN THE VEHICLE SINCE THEN. *TR

WHILE DRIVING A SPEED OF 50-55 MPH THE VEHICLE ENCOUNTERS A BUMP IN THE ROAD, OR AN UNEVEN SPOT, A VIOLENT SHAKING BEGINS AND IS UNCORRECTABLE UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT TO A NEAR COMPLETE STOP. THE DEALERSHIP CALLS THIS THE "DEATH WOBBLE". THIS HAS GONE ON FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 YEARS WHENEVER I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD DRIVING ANYWHERE FROM 35 MPH AND OVER. THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE WAS THE WORST, IT HAPPENED AT A HIGHER SPEED (APPROX. 65 MPH) AND RESULTED IN A NEAR COLLISION/ROLLOVER. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY CHYSLER JEEP ASAP. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AND POTENTIAL LOSS OF LIFE ISSUE.

THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL AND MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT RESUMED WITH CAUTION TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE; AND INFORMED HER THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE AXLE DETACHED FROM THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF A COMPLETELY STOCK 2007 JEEP WRANGLER WITH ABOUT 56,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM, COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS "DEATH WOBBLE". THIS ISSUE CAN OCCUR FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND IS RELATED TO SOME SORT OF HARMONIC IMBALANCE WITH THE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY. RECOMMENDED "SOLUTIONS" INCLUDE REPLACEMENT OF THE STEERING STABILIZER, CHECKING FOR SLOP IN THE TRACK BAR MOUNTING POINTS, INCLUDING THE BUSHING ON THE TRACK BAR ITSELF, BAD BALL JOINTS AND FINALLY TIRE "CUPPING" OR IMBALANCE. THE ISSUE HAPPENED WHILE DE-ACCELERATING FROM 70 TO 55 M.P.H. AND CHANGING FROM THE MIDDLE TO RIGHT-HAND LANE ON WESTBOUND I-94 IN ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI. IN ADDITION TO THE LANE CHANGE AND DE-ACCELERATION, I WAS ALSO ENGAGED IN A SWEEPING LEFT-HAND TURN PRIOR TO MY EXIT FROM THE FREEWAY AT EXIT 225. THIS SITUATION IS NOT ONLY UNACCEPTABLE BUT UNSAFE FOR ANY DRIVER OF THIS OR ANY OTHER JEEP WRANGLER. I UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES OF SECURING A LIVE AXLE TO A VEHICLE WITH THE SUSPENSION TRAVEL THAT JEEP OWNERS EXPECT OF THEIR VEHICLES, BUT FOR THIS TO OCCUR ON A SMOOTH HIGHWAY IS SCARY. WHEN DRIVING AT 40MPH + SPEEDS, IF THE TIRES HIT A FAIRLY LARGE BUMP, THE ENTIRE FRONT END SHAKES VIOLENTLY, CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL TO WHIP LEFT AND RIGHT. BECAUSE OF THE SHAKING, SHUDDERING AND WHIPPING OF THE STEERING WHEEL, LOSS OF CONTROL BECOMES IMMINENT AND SUDDEN BRAKING IS THE ONLY OPTION LEFT TO THE DRIVER ATTEMPTING TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. MY 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 2 DOOR DEVELOPED A VIOLENT SHAKE WHEN I WOULD HIT A BUMP OR GO OVER RAILROAD TRACKS AT SPEEDS AROUND 15 MPH TO 25 MPH. THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD JERK LEFT AND RIGHT, ALMOST TO THE POINT THAT I COULD NOT MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL OR THE VEHICLE. I COULD FEEL THE FRONT WHEEL SHAKING BACK AND FORTH. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT WOULD BE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. AFTER A GREAT DEAL OF DIAGNOSING THIS ISSUE, I REMOVED THE FRONT TRACTION BAR AND NOTICED THAT THE BOLT HOLES ON BOTH THE FRAME AND AXLE BRACKETS THAT SECURE THE TRACTION BAR HAD BECOME ELONGATED. DUE TO THE VEHICLE BEING OUT OF WARRANTY, I TOOK IT TO A WELDING SHOP. THEY ADVISED ME THAT THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE TO WELD A HEAVY DUTY WASHER ON BOTH SIDES OF EACH MOUNTING BRACKET TO SECURE THE MOUNTING BOLTS. THE WELDING SHOP ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THIS WOULD NOT BE A PERMANENT FIX, BUT MAY LAST FOR A WHILE. THEY ALSO INFORMED MY THAT THE METAL BRACKETS APPEARED TO BE MADE OF WEAK METAL AND THE BOLTS ARE GRADE 8. THEY SAID THIS EXPLAINS THAT THE BRACKET IS WEAKER THAN THE BOLT AND THAT IS WHY THE BRACKETS GAVE WAY. AFTER THE WASHERS WERE WELDED ON THE BRACKETS, THE SHAKING HAS GONE AND HAS NOT RETURNED. AFTER INSTALLING AN AFTERMARKET HEAVY DUTY FRONT TRACK BAR, THE WOBBLE CEASED TO EXIST. MY EVALUATION: THE FRONT TRACK BAR THAT COMES STANDARD EQUIPPED ON THE JK-CHASSIS WRANGLER IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 45MPH AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPLACED WITH A STRONGER ONE BEFORE SERIOUS DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO OWNERS, THEIR VEHICLES AND PASSENGERS, AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. *TR

VEHICLE: 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 2-DOOR 4X4. THE VEHICLE VIBRATION (FRONT END(?)) HAS EXISTED SINCE PURCHASED IN MARCH 2007 AND WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP AT FIRST SERVICE AND SUBSAQUENT SERVICES. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE DEVELOPES A VIBRATION BEGINNING AT 60 MPH THROUGH 65 MPH AND ENDING AT 70 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPEATEDLY BALANCED ALL THE TIRES AND STATES THEY ARE WITHIN TOLERANCE. IN JUNE 2008 THE CHRYSLER AREA REPRESENTATIVE CAME AND TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR TEST DRIVES AS WELL AS OTHER LIKE VEHICLES OFF THE LOT. ALL TESTED HAD VIBRATIONS AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME SPEEDS. IN JULY 2008 CHRYSLER SENT A SUPER TECH. WHO ALSO TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR A TEST DRIVE AS WELL AS OTHER NEW LIKE VEHICLES OFF THE LOT AND THE PROBLEM EXISTED IN ALL VEHICLES. THE CONCLUSION BY BOTH CHRYSLER REPRESENTATIVES IS THAT THE VEHICLE VIBRATION PROBLEM THAT I EXPERANCE IN MY 2007 WRANGLER 2-DOOR 4X4 IS IN FACT INHERENT TO THIS PRODUCT LINE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FOR THE PURPOSE OF PULLING IT FOUR WHEELS DOWN BEHIND A MOTORHOME AND AT THE 60-65 MPH SPEED RANGE, WHICH IS THE BEST ECOMOMY ZONE FOR A MOTORHOME. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ON A FLAT STRAIGHT WELL PAVED ROAD IN DOWNTOWN CITY STREET. I WAS GOING BETWEEN 30 AND 35 MILES PER HOUR AND ON A DRY ROAD AND TRAVELED OVER A RAILROAD TRACK TRANSITION (SLIGHTLY ELEVATED CONCRETE TO TRANSITION OVER TRACKS SMOOTHER) THIS SET UP ANOTHER UNCONTROLLABLE MEDIUM FREQUENCY VIBRATION IN THE VEHICLE THAT COULD NOT BE STOPPED UNLESS THE VEHICLE COMES TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP. OTHERS ON WWW.JK-FORUM.COM HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR SITUATIONS. DEALERS ARE BLOWING SOME OF US OFF. IT SHOULD BE MENTIONED THAT I ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH THE ANTI-SKIT MITIGATION SYSTEM OFF. IT APPEARS THAT A LATERAL OSCILLATION IS STARTING UP IN THE FRONT END OF THE JEEP STEERING SYSTEM. BUT THAT IS JUST A GUESS.
