I HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND THE STICK SHIFTER THAT IS STICK CONSTANTLY CAUSES IT TO POP OUT OF FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WHEN I AM DRIVING. THIS HAPPENS VERY FREQUENTLY AND HAS BEEN A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THOSE BEHIND ME IN TRAFFIC, AT A LIGHT OR IN A FOUR WAY STOP BELIEVE I AM ACCELERATING WHEN IN FACT I HAVE BEEN KICKED OUT OF EITHER GEAR BACK TO NEUTRAL. I HAVE HAD SOME CLOSE CALLS WITH VEHICLES ALMOST REAR ENDING ME AND FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND THOSE OF OTHERS I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. USUALLY, I WOULD ADDRESS THIS MYSELF BUT AFTER READING COUNTLESS BLOGS AND CONCERNS THIS IS WORTHY OF A RECALL COMPLAINT. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS CONCERN REGARDLESS OF THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE COME FORWARD BECAUSE THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM BUT JEEP DRIVERS TEND TO THEIR OWN VEHICLES RATHER THAN GOING THROUGH PROPER CHANNELS.

TRANSMISSION VIOLENTLY SHIFTS OUT OF 1ST GEAR WHILE STARTING FROM A DEAD STOP (STOP LIGHT, INTERSECTION, ETC) THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND SOMEONE IS LIKELY TO GET HURT OR KILLED WHEN THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE AND HAS BEEN AFFECTING JEEP OWNERS FOR YEARS. WHY HASN"T JEEP DONE A RECALL ON THIS VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE??? THIS HAPPENS AT LEAST TWICE A DAY IF NOT MORE. SOME OWNERS HAVE IT HAPPEN EVERY TIME.

AT 35 MPH IN CITY TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN AND THE TACH ROSE AS IF I WERE IN NEUTRAL, I LET OFF ACCELERATOR AND VEHICLE JUMPED FORWARD AS IF IT WENT BACK INTO GEAR. AS VEHICLE STARTED GAINING SPEED I STEPPED ON ACCELERATOR AND IT SEEMED TO GO INTO NEUTRAL AGAIN AND THE TACH ONCE AGAIN ROSE. I PULLED OVER TO CURB IN CITY AND TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND EXITED VEHICLE. I NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER VEHICLE AND REACHED BACK IN AND TURNED VEHICLE OFF. I OPENED HOOD AND FLAMES CAME UP FROM THE CENTER OF VEHICLE BEHIND ENGINE, I WENT TO REAR OF VEHICLE AND GRABBED FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND TRIED TO PUT FIRE OUT BUT COULDN'T. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR GAUGES GAVE ADVANCE NOTICE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THERE WAS A TRAIL OF FLUID THAT STARTED AT LEAST 300' DOWN THE MIDDLE OF MY LANE BEHIND MY VEHICLE AND ENDED UNDER MY TRANSMISSION. THE ONLY PHOTO IS A VIDEO I POSTED ON FACEBOOK, I TOOK THE VIDEO WHILE WAITING FOR FIRETRUCKS AND POLICE.

WHILE STARTING IN 1ST GEAR FROM A STOPPED POSITION OR DOWN SHIFTING WHILE MOVING THE SYNCHRONIZER WILL MAKE THE SHIFTER SLAM OUT OF GEAR, EVEN WHEN YOU HOLD THE SHIFTER IN FIRST , IT WILL SLAM YOUR HAND BACK. WILL DO IT IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN AFTER YOU START MOVING IN 1ST GEAR OR TRYING TO PUT IT IN 1ST GEAR. HAS HAD PROBLEM SINCE FIRST RECEIVED THE VEHICLE BUT EACH TIME THE DEALER LOOKED AT IT THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE VEHICLE GETS HIT FROM THIS MECHANICAL ISSUE. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO RECALL IT. THERE ARE OTHER JEEPS OUT THERE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. HAPPENS SPORADICALLY.

I HAD A LIFETIME WARRANTY PACKAGE ON MY 2008 JEEP WRANGLER. I ALSO KEEP GREAT RECORDS OF MY MAINTAINED AND DID MOST OF IT AT THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS DRIVING 65MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE TRANSMISSION / ENGINE AREA STARTED SMOKING. WHEN I PULLED OVER GROUP LLC AND LAMES WERE DRIPPING FROM THE TRANSMISSION / ENGINE AREA. SMOKE QUICKLY FILLED THE VEHICLE AND WITH-IN 2 MINUTES THE JEEP WRANGLER WAS UP IN FLAMES. I CONTACT CHRYSLER GROUP LLC AND THEY SENT AN INSPECTOR OUT. THEY WERE VERY HARD TO WORK WITH AND MAILED ME LETTER SAYING, "THE INSPECTOR FOUND NO INDICATION OF A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT CAUSED OR CONTRIBUTED TO THE INCIDENT ON 1 JUL 14. NO HELP AT ALL! I WANT TO LOOK INTO THIS MORE. IT SEEMS THE TRANSMISSION / ENGINE DEFECT COST ME A ONE JEEP WRANGLER AND THEY ACCEPTED NO RESPONSIBILITY. *TR

HELLO, I'M REQUESTING THAT A FACTORY RECALL BE PLACED ON MY 2008 JEEP WRANGLER. THE ISSUE IS THAT THE SHIFTER CABLE FALLS OFF FROM THE TRANSMISSION LEVER BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE CABLE THERE IS A CHEAP 1 CENT PLASTIC INSERT THAT DRIES UP AND DISINTEGRATES, THUS THE SHIFTER CABLE TO FALL-OFF. THANKS BE TO GOD, THAT NOTHING MAJOR HAPPENED TO US, BUT POTENTIALLY IT COULD BE FATAL IN OTHER CASES. IMAGINE THIS, WHEN THIS CABLE FALLS-OFF THE VEHICLE IS STUCK IN THE ?REVERSE GEAR?, THEN YOU GIVE IT GAS AND INSTEAD OF GOING FORWARD, THE JEEP GOES BACKWARDS UNEXPECTEDLY, POTENTIALLY OVER A PERSON, OR DOWN CLIFF, DOWN A MOUNTAIN, INTO A RIVER, LAKE OR EVEN CAUSING A MAJOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. IN MY CASE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE JEEP, NOT KNOWING THAT THE SHIFTER CABLE HAD FALLEN-OFF AND THAT THE JEEP WAS NOW STUCK IN "DRIVE GEAR". WHEN SHE STOPPED AND THE SHIFTED TO ?PARK? THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO DRIVE FORWARD UNDER THE ENGINE IDLE POWER. ALSO WHEN THE JEEP WAS TURNED ?OFF? TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE, SOON AS SHE RELEASE THE JEEP?S BRAKE IT STARTED TO ROLL ON ITS OWN. THE ?EMERGENCY BRAKE? HAD TO BE APPLIED IN ORDER TO STOP THE JEEP FROM ROLLING FURTHER. IN CLOSING THIS CABLE IS MADE WITH VERY CHEAP PARTS AND ALSO IT IS NOT DESIGNED PROPERLY, IT LACKS WHAT ENGINEERS IN MY FIELD WE CALL ?A FAIL SAFE DESIGN CRITERIA?. NOTICE INVESTING A 5 CENTS METAL CLIP, PLACED OVER THE END OF THE CABLE IT WOULD PREVENT IT FROM EVER FALLING OUT, EVEN IF THE PLASTIC DISINTEGRATES. THIS EXISTING CABLE DESIGN IS EXTREMELY DANGER, AGAIN THE END INSERT IS MADE-UP OF A CHEAP PLASTIC AND IT LACKS A METAL RETAINING CLIP. IN CLOSING THE FACTORY SHOULD REPLACE THIS CABLE FOR FREE, BUT THE REPLACEMENT SHALL HAVE THE PLASTIC INSERT MADE-UP OF A STRONGER MATERIAL (ONE THAT WON'T CRUMBLE). I HAVE A 2008 RUBICON 4-DOOR, I WAS OUT IN THE DESERT IN AN AREA THAT REQUIRED BEING IN 4 HIGH, WHEN I GOT TO A REGULAR DIRT ROAD, I TRIED TO SHIFT OUT OF 4 LOW AND THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFTER JUST WENT COMPLETELY LIMP. I WAS STUCK IN A TOTAL NEUTRAL STATE AND COULD NOT MOVE. IT TOOK SOME TIME TO MANUALLY MANIPULATE THE SHIFT CABLE FROM UNDERNEATH THE JEEP TO GET IT INTO 2 HIGH SO I COULD GET OUT OF THE AREA. APPARENTLY, CHRYSLER IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THE ROOT CAUSE OF IT IS A 50 CENT BUSHING THAT BECOMES BROKE OR PULLS AWAY FROM THE TRANSFER CASE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF YOU ARE IN A REMOTE AREA AND ARE UNABLE TO GET UNDER THE JEEP AND SUCCESSFULLY GET THE CASE INTO GEAR. THE JEEP IS STUCK IN NEUTRAL COULD KILL SOMEONE IF IT LOSES ITS POWERTRAIN ON A STEEP HILL. THIS ALSO HAPPENED A SECOND TIME FURTHER UP TRANSFER CASE SHIFTER CASE CABLE 2 YEARS LATER. LEFT ME STRANDED IN THE WILDERNESS TWICE. I WAS INJURED WITH AN EXHAUST BURN ATTEMPTING TO RECONNECT THE BROKEN CABLE. JEEP SAYS AT THEIR DRIVING CAMP SHIFTING WITH MORE THAN 2 FINGER LIGHT TOUCH WILL BREAK THE TRANSFER CASE LINKAGE. *TR

THE CONTACT LATER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V436000 (POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A SAVAGE FACILITY. ALSO, THE BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DRAINED AFTER A MONTH OF HAVING THE JEEP. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND SAID IT WAS THE BATTERY. WE HAD TO PAY THE FOR THE TEST AND THEN WE REPLACED THE BATTERY OURSELVES, A COUPLE DAYS LATER THE JEEP WOULD NOT START AGAIN! I PUT THE JEEP IN NEUTRAL AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. SO NOW AT LEAST ONCE A DAY I HAVE TO PUT THE JEEP IN NEUTRAL TO START IT. MY MAIN CONCERN IS THAT IT IS EVENTUALLY GOING TO DRAIN MY BATTERY AGAIN AND I AM GOING TO HAVE TO KEEP REPLACING BATTERIES. THEY HAD OUR VEHICLE FOR A FEW WEEKS, AND WHEN WE WENT TO PICK IT UP WE WERE TOLD THEY FOUND NO PROBLEMS. THEY HAD, 'TAKEN IT APART, PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND DRIVEN IT AROUND,' WITH NO ISSUES. THERE ARE MANY MANY OTHERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE AND CHRYSLER HAS CHOSEN TO PUT OTHERS AT RISK AS THE ISSUE IS STILL NOT FIXED ON NEW VEHICLES BUT REQUIRES THE TSB TO BE PERFORMED TO REMEDY (MAYBE IT FIXES IT BUT I AM STILL NOT CONVINCED).
