DRIVING 40 MPH OR OVER WILL CAUSE CAR TO HARSHLY SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY MAKING IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND CONTROL THE VEHICLE. COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON A FREEWAY AS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE CAR TO STOP SHAKING IS TO COMPLETELY STOP. BECAUSE OF ALL THE SHAKING CAUSES OTHER SUSPENSION AND WHEEL PROBLEMS. BOLTS ON SUSPENSION AND WHEEL START TO LOOSEN UP CAUSING ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE. VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR JEEP WRANGLERS FROM 2006 TO PRESENT.

DEVELOPED DEATH WOBBLE ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MILES AN HOUR. IN RESEARCHING I SEE CHRYSLER SAYS THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. I CAN ASSURE YOU IT IS. IT IS A DESIGNED FLAW ACCORDING TO THE MECHANICS I HAD LOOK AT IT. A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR THAT CHRYSLER WILL NOT COVER. I LUCKILY SOMEHOW KEPT THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL DESPITE THE STEERING SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY, SO BAD THE VEHICLE LIFTED OFF THE ROAD AND SKIDDED SIDEWAYS.

1. HIT A BUMP GOING 55MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND EXPERIENCED THE DEATH WOBBLE. HAD TO HIT THE BRAKES AND SLOW DOWN IMMEDIATE TO 25 MPH. SUPER DANGEROUS ON THE FREEWAY. THANKFULLY THIS WAS A CITY FREEWAY THAT HAD A SPEED LIMIT OF 55MPH. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD'VE HAPPENED IF I WAS GOING FASTER, SAY ON AN INTERSTATE WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 80MPH. 2. WHENEVER I FILL UP THE GAS ALWAYS OVERFLOW. SO EACH TIME NOW I HAVE TO SQUEEZE THE PUMP GENTLY AND HOLD IT FOR THE ENTIRE FILL UP. 3. THE REAR CALIPER STICKS SOMETIMES.

I AM SICK OF WORRYING ABOUT DYING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SERIOUS ISSUE GOD FORBID PEOPLE THAT HAVE CHILDREN IN CAR SEATS. THIS HAS HAPPENED ONTHE FREEWAY AND LOCAL ROADS. VERY CLOSE DEADLY SITUATIONS. MY ISSUE IS COMMONLY REFERRED TO ON THE INTERNET AS THE JEEP "DEATH WOBBLE". AT AROUND 50-60MPH THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, WHEELS AND STEERING BEGIN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS TO BRAKE TO A COMPLETE STOP. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS AND DISCONCERTING WEN THIS HAPPENS IN BUSY TRAFFIC ON THE FREEWAY. HAVE HAD WHEELS BALANCED AND TRACKING DONE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT ISSUE STILL OCCURS - STARTING AROUND 3 OR 4 YEAR AGO.

DRIVING VEHICLE OVER 60MPH RESULTED IN MULTIPLE EPISODES OF THE DEATH WOBBLE WITHIN A 3 WEEK PERIOD OF TIME. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AT USED CAR DEALERSHIP AND STATE INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED ON THE DAY OF PURCHASE. WITHIN 24 HOURS OF HAVING THE VEHICLE, I EXPERIENCED THE FIRST ENCOUNTER. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HILL AT APPROXIMATELY 60MPH AND THE STEERING FELT SHAKEY AND THE WHEEL BEGAN TO WOBBLE. IT SUBSIDED AS I SLOWED DOWN. THE NEXT DAY, THIS OCCURED ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE AT 65MPH AND CAR WAS TOWED TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP. I WAS INFORMED THE BALL JOINTS SHOULD NEVER HAVE PASSED INSPECTION ALONG WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND HE CLAIMED TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. WITHIN 3 DAYS OF GETTING THE JEEP BACK, ONCE AGAIN THE WOBBLE OCCURRED AT A SPEED OF 65MPH AND I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD. THE DEALER RETURNED A PORTION OF MY PURCHASE PRICE AND I RETURNED THE JEEP. THE JEEP IS NOW BACK ON THE LOT FOR SALE.

WHEN BRAKING FROM A SPEED OF 60MPH OR GREATER, THE FRONT END STEERING BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL TO VIBRATE BACK AND FORTH. IT WOULD ONLY SUBSIDE WHEN RELEASING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VIBRATION FELT LIKE AN UNSTABLE OSCILLATION THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO MAKE A SHARP TURN IF THE BRAKE WAS NOT RELEASED. THIS SYMPTOM WAS REPEATABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A JEEP DEALER FOR SERVICING. THEY ATTRIBUTED THE PROBLEM TO "STEERING DAMPER HAD PLAY AND WAS LEAKING". PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED BY REPLACING THE DAMPER AND ASSOCIATED HARDWARE (HEX BOLT AND LOCKING HEX NUT).

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT END STABILIZER BAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. MY JEEP'S HORN BEGAN HONKING, WIPERS CAME ON, DOOR LOCKS BEGAN LOCKING AND UNLOCKING. NOTHING STOPPED UNTIL I GOT HOME AND MY HUSBAND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. HE CONNECTED IT SEVERAL HOURS LATER AND IT WAS FINE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOLD ME NOTHING COULD BE DONE AS THE PROBLEM HAD STOPPED. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, THE SAME THING OCCURRED ALONG WITH THE A/C SHUTTING OFF. WE WENT THROUGH THE SAME STEPS; DISCONNECT BATTERY, RECONNECT AND TOOK TO DEALERSHIP. AGAIN I WAS TOLD THAT THEY REALLY COULDN'T DIAGNOSE BECAUSE NOTHING WAS HAPPENING AT THAT POINT. LAST NIGHT MY JEEP BEGAN SHAKING VIOLENTLY AND SCARED ME AS I COULD NOT REGAIN CONTROL. I HAD TO SLOW AND PULL OVER SO IT COULD STOP. MY HUSBAND CAME TO GET ME AND WAS FOLLOWING ME WHEN IN ADDITION TO THE PAST THINGS HAPPENING (I CALL IT POSSESSED), THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON; BRAKE, ENGINE, ABS, BATTERY, ETC. IT THEN STALLED AS I WAS TURNING. LUCKILY THE WOMAN COMING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION SLOWED AND WENT AROUND OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN HIT. MY HUSBAND TOWED THE JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND LEFT IT THERE, AND TOLD THEM TO FIX IT AS IT IS A REAL ROAD HAZARD. IN READING ABOUT JEEP COMPLAINTS, I'M ASSUMING IT IS A "TIPM" PROBLEM AND SOMETHING CALLED A "DEATH WOBBLE". I AM ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED THAT THIS HASN'T BEEN RECALLED.

SEARCH INTERNET FOR JK DEATH WOBBLE. CHRYSLER LLC HAS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH JK WRANGLER THAN NEED RECALL BEFORE SOME ONE DIES DUE TO LOSING CONTROL TO THE FRONT END OF THEIR VEHICLE. OUR 2008 JEEP WRANGLER HAS BEEN PLAGUED WITH SUSPENSION AND FRONT AXLE STEERING ISSUES FOR ITS ENTIRE EXISTENCE INCLUDING A STABILIZER REPLACEMENT AT APPROX 20,000 MILES 6 YEARS AGO. I HAD THE DEATH WOBBLE AT ABOUT 15K MILES, 35K MILES AND NOW AGAIN AT 65K MILES. THE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AND WAS SCARED WHEN HE DROVE MY CAR TO SEE THE PROBLEM FOR HIMSELF. IT'S UNSAFE FOR ME AND MY 2-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IN THE BACK. MY CAR NEEDS THIS REPAIRED AGAIN RIGHT NOW, AND I ASSUME WILL NEED IT EVERY 20K MILES OR SO. ON THE LAST OCCASION THIS HAPPENED (YESTERDAY), I HIT A SMALL GAP IN THE PAVEMENT (FOR EXAMPLE, THE NORMAL SEAM WHERE TWO PIECES OF CONCRETE COME TOGETHER) AT ABOUT 45MPH. THE FRONT END STARTED VIBRATING AND THEN THE VIBRATION INCREASES (ALMOST LIKE THE CAR IS RESONATING), UNTIL YOU CAN'T HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE CAR IS ABOUT TO VIBRATE OFF THE ROAD UNCONTROLLABLY. THIS IS HOW THE ISSUE ALWAYS OCCURS AND IT OCCURS BETWEEN 45-70MPH. IT'S BEGINS WITH A SMALL BUMP OR IMPERFECTION ON THE PAVEMENT. IT'S EASILY REPRODUCED. *TR

THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND SHAKES WHICH MAKES IT VERY HARD TO STEER THE VEHICLE AND IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE VIOLENT SHAKING IS TO QUICKLY SLOW THE CAR DOWN, WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON THE BUSY INTERSTATE WHICH I TRAVEL EVERYDAY TO GET TO AND FROM WORK. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKED SO VIOLENTLY THAT I HAD TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE, ON A BUSY HIGHWAY, TO STOP THE SHAKING. I FEEL I HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF FROM CHRYSLER MOTOR COMPANY, I SPENT 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON A VEHICLE THAT MAY KILL ME OR SOMEONE ELSE. AN IMMEDIATE RECALL SHOULD BE SENT OUT TO ALL OWNERS OF JEEP WRANGLER JK UNLIMITED 4 DOORS. ALSO THE NEWS MEDIA SHOULD BE INFORMED AND BROADCAST THE RECALL AND WHAT THEY SHOULD DO. IT WAS A DRY SUNNY LATE MORNING WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A COLORADO INTERSTATE AT APPROX. 65MPH. I WENT OVER A ROUGH PATCH OF ROAD AND THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE FROM SIDE TO SIDE. THIS HAPPENED FOUR MORE TIMES ON THIS TRIP, ALWAYS AFTER HITTING A BUMP AT 50MPH OR FASTER. AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH I DETERMINED THE SYMPTOMS WERE CONSISTENT WITH A WELL KNOW PROBLEM, "DEATH WOBBLE". MY 2008 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED X IS 4 YEARS OLD, HAS 30K MILES ON IT AND IS COMPLETELY STOCK AND WELL MAINTAINED. IT HAS THE STOCK 32" GOODYEAR SRA TIRES ON 17" RIMS, FILLED TO 35 PSI. I CHECKED THE TORQUE ON THE TRACK BAR AND THE BOLTS WERE TO SPEC AT 125 LB/FT. I TOOK THE JEEP TO A LOCAL SHOP WHERE THEY DETERMINED THE BALL JOINTS WERE BAD AS WELL AS THE STEERING STABILIZER. THOSE HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH AFTERMARKET COMPONENTS AND SO FAR THERE HAVE BEEN NO FURTHER OCCURRENCES. THAT WAS ABOUT 3K MILES AGO AND I HAVE TESTED THE JEEP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH A SEVERE BUMP WHICH DID NOT INDUCE DEATH WOBBLE. FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE ON AN UNEVEN STRETCH OF HIGHWAY WOULD RENDER THE VEHICLE INCAPABLE OF MAINTAINING NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS IMPEDING FLOW OF TRAFFIC. THIS CAUSES FRONT TIRES TO LOSE PRESSURE AND WEAR MORE RAPIDLY. PROBLEM OCCURRED MORE FREQUENTLY AFTER RE-INFLATING TIRES. SLOWING THE VEHICLE TO A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 35MPH OR LESS WOULD USUALLY STOP THE SHAKING; SOMETIMES, AN ALMOST, COMPLETE STOP WOULD BE NECESSARY. UPON MY INITIAL COMPLAINT NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT. I WAS TOLD IT MAY BE AN OUT OF BALANCE TIRE. UPON THE 2ND COMPLAINT THE STEERING DAMPENER WAS REPLACED. I HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO ADEQUATELY TEST THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF THIS REPAIR HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM. FROM EVERYTHING I'VE READ, IT'S A TEMPORARY FIX AT BEST. ON TUESDAY MARCH 9TH 2010 I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED ACROSS RAILROAD TRACKS IN HERMAN MINNESOTA ABOUT 11:00 AM. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE WET. I EXPERIENCED A VIOLENT SHAKING STARTING IN THE FRONT END WHICH THEN INVOLVED THE WHOLE VEHICLE. MY SPEED WAS ABOUT 25 TO 30 MPH. I HIT THE BRAKES AND THE SHAKING STOPPED. I HAVE 15,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS ON VARIOUS FORUMS ON THE INTERNET(EDMUNDS.COM,JKFORUM.COM ETC) I HAVE NO MODIFICATIONS ON MY VEHICLE AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED(TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED, OIL CHANGES ETC). I BOUGHT A 2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE NEW AND HAVE TRAVELED OVER THESE SAME RAILROAD TRACKS MANY A TIME WITH NO PROBLEMS. 2008 WRANGLER SPORT 4 DR. AFTER RUNNING OVER A SEAM IN THE CURVE OF AN OVERPASS THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY. THE WHOLE CAR WAS BOUNCING. THIS SHAKING CONTINUED UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE. THE INCIDENT WAS TERRIFYING AND I FELT AS IF I WOULD LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENED 2 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR AND MENTIONED IT TO THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER. WHILE DRIVING MY 2008 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED ON A TWO LANE ROAD AT ABOUT 45 MILES PER HOUR I HIT A POTHOLE AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS A VIOLENT SHAKING IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED FROM SIDE TO SIDE UNCONTROLLABLY FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS AND I COULD FEEL THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BEING TURNED FROM SIDE TO SIDE AS THOUGHT THE FRONT TIRES WERE WOBBLING BACK AND FORTH FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT WAS TO HIT THE BRAKES AND SLOW THE VEHICLE. IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS I HAVE FELT A LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING WHEN I HIT A BUMP OR POTHOLE IN THE ROAD BUT THIS TIME IT WAS VIOLENT AND SUSTAINED AND NEARLY CAUSED ME TO CROSS THE CENTER LINE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY JEEP DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH JEEP FROM SUSPENSION AND THAT THE TECHNICIAN HIMSELF HAD EXPERIENCED IT IN HIS OWN JEEP. HE MADE THE COMMENT THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON IT. IN THE END THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE THE STEERING DAMPER, TRACTION BAR, BUSHINGS, AND BRACKETS. CONVENIENTLY THESE ITEMS ARE SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED FROM THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT IS SOLD AS "BUMPER-TO-BUMPER". SUPPOSEDLY THIS EVEN HAS A NICKNAME, "DEATH-WOBBLE". *TR

FRONT END SUSPENSION OSCILLATION INTENSIFIES AS SPEED INCREASES RENDERING STEERING FORCES THAT EXCEED HUMAN STRENGTH. THE SENSATION THAT IS GENERATED IS THAT THE FRONT END GOES IN ONE DIRECTION WHILST THE WHEELS GO IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. SQUEALING FROM THE TIRES RESULTS IN VISIBLE SKID MARKS ON MOST ROAD SURFACES.
