MY JEEP IS EXPERIENCING THE "DEATH WOBBLE". IT ALMOST TURNED OVER ON I-85 OUTSIDE OF ATLANTA. MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AT 55MPH AND THERE WAS A SMALL DIP IN THE ROAD. THE JEEP BEGAN TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY. SHE COULD HARDLY CONTROL THE STEERING WHEEL OR THE JEEP. WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO SLOW DOWN ENOUGH (ALMOST REAR ENDED TWICE) AND PULL OVER. THIS IS NOT ISOLATED. WE HAD THE JEEP IN FOR REPAIRS BEFORE AND EVERYTHING LISTED FOR REPAIR OF THE DEATH WOBBLE REPLACED. IT IS DOING IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU NEED TO RECALL THESE JEEPS AND MAKE CHRYSLER FIX THEM BEFORE SOMEONE LIKE MY 23 YEAR OLD DIES!!!!!!!!!!!!1

MY JEEP HAS THE "DEATH WOBBLE"- I'VE SPENT OVER $1000 TRYING TO FIX IT. WHEN GOING OVER 50 ON A HIGHWAY, A SLOW SHAKE QUICKLY TURNS INTO A VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE JEEP BACK AND FORTH UNTIL I'M ALMOST STOPPED (5PMPH-ISH) ON THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY. I WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED THE OTHER DAY, AND AM PETRIFIED TO BRING IT ON THE HIGHWAY NOW.

WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, IF YOU HIT A ROUGH SPOT ON THE ROAD, IT STARTS TO SHIMMY AND THE STEERING WHEEL STARTS TO VIOLENTLY JERK BACK AND FORTH. THE FRONT TIRES ARE WOBBLING. YOU HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY GRIPPING THE STEERING WHEEL AND PUSH ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS YOU CAN WITHOUT LOOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE TO GET IT STOPED.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH THE VEHICLE HIT SOMETHING ON THE ROAD (SMALL BUMP) WHICH RESULTED IN A VIOLENT SHAKING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCED LEARNED THAT THIS CONDITION IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE DEATH WOBBLE. THE CONDITION WAS SO VIOLENT I WAS FORCED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST FOUR WEEKS. THE FIRST INSTANCE I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT, THE SECOND INSTANCE I WAS IN A CURVE. THE CONDITION DOES NOT RESOLVE ITSELF ALTHOUGH THE MAGNITUDE OF THE VIBRATION DOES DECREASE WITH SPEED. THE VEHICLE IS UNDRIVABLE WITH THIS CONDITION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 55-70 MPH. THE CONDITION IS INDUCED BY NORMAL UNDULATIONS AND VARIATIONS IN THE ROAD (I.E.: NOT ONLY A HUGE POTHOLE). AFTER STOPPING ON THE SHOULDER AND INSPECTING THE UNDERCARRIAGE I NOTICED NOTHING UNUSUAL. I RESUMED DRIVING HOWEVER, THE CONDITION DID NOT RESOLVE ITSELF AND I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE BELOW 40 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY (AS I HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS). AFTER THE CAR SAT FOR ~30 MINS I DROVE THE VEHICLE AND THE CONDITION WAS NOT PRESENT. EACH OCCURRENCE WAS RESOLVED THE SAME WAY BY ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO REST. CHRYSLER DID RELEASE A TECHNICAL SERVICE ADVISORY THAT DESCRIBES WHAT TO CHECK. MY ISSUE IS THAT BASED ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ENCOUNTERING PROBLEMS WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE (MY VEHICLE IS AT 65K) THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE VICE THE CONSUMER TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT OR PREMATURELY WORN PARTS.

BRAKE LIGHT HAS BEEN IN FOREVER, HAD CHECKED, NOT AN ISSUE BUT...BEGAN NOTICING ON HIGHWAY. NOT SO SEVERE TO HAVE TO STOP TO REGAIN CONTROL. ABOUT A YEAR AGO IIT HAPPENED AT LOWER SPEEDS, AS FEW AS 35MPH, ANY UNEVEN SURFACE, BUMP, TEXTURE OR LEVEL CHANGE SETS IT OFF. TAPPING OR USE OF THE BRAKES. "DEATH WOBBLE" OCCURS. A SLIGHT TREMOR RADIATING FROM STEERING COLUMN THEN THROUGH THE ENTIRE JEEP. SO INTENSE THAT IT FEELS LIKE THE TIRES ARE TURNING SIDEWAYS, MAINTAINING CONTROL, STEERIN AND BRAKING EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. REGULAR BRAKING DOES NOT HELP. HARS BRAKE ONLY. HAVEN'T COME TO COMPLETE STOP. I'VE ALWAYS STOPPED, PUT BACK INTO PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. THINKING MAYBE SOME SORT OF RESET MAY OCCUR. IT HELPS ME TO RESET MY OWN SELF ANYWAYS! VERY SCARY! ESPECIALLY IF IN A VENDOR CURVED PART OF ROADWAY. . BRAKE LIGHT STILL ON EVEN AFTER INSPECTED (?) TOOK INTO SHOP. MECHANIC SAID BALL JOINTS NEEDED REPLACED. DEATH WOBBLE WENT AWAY FOR A FEW WEEKS AND IT'S BACK. PRIOR ALIGNMENTS~ ONLY REGULAR ADJUSTMENTS REQUIRED. I TRIED TO PAY ATTENTION AFTER THIS 'FIX' AND DETERMINED THAT BRAKING (EVEN JUST A TAP) STARTS IT AND ANY SURFACE CHANGE IN THE ROAD OLDER JEEPS HAD A SIMPLY FIX, TIGHTENED A BOLT ON STEERING COLUM. MY SON IS IN TRAINING, DID A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE STEERING COLUM. SAYS SEEMED TO ME SOME EXTRA PLAY, NOTHING LIKE A BOLT LOOSE BUT DARK OUT, MULTIPLE COMPONENTS ALONG COLUMN, UNSURE WITHOUT A LENGTHIER INSPECTION. NOTHING BY SIGHT. WE STOPPED DRIVING AND TOOK IT IN FOR INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT OF FRONT END BALLJOINTS. TIRES HAVE AN UNFAMILIAR PATTERN OF WEAR. USING FACTORY RECOMMEND TIRES, SIZE AND PRESSURE. VERY LITTLE OFF ROAD. MOSTLY DRIVEN FOR IN TOWN/ HIGHWAY DRIVING. I HOPE THIS HELPS. VERY VERY SCARY WHEN THIS HAPPENS. OH I'VE TRIED TO OUTRUN. DOESN'T WORK. MY DAUGHTER REFUSES TO RIDE IT IN AS WE ALMOST HIT SOMEONE HEAD ON BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE STEERING WHEN THE "DEATH WOBBLE" HAPPENED. HAVE ALSO HAD IT HAPPEN WHERE IT PUT ME OFF INTO THE SIDE OF A DITCH. I HAVE DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS DUE TO CANCER AN HOUR AWAY. HAVE TO GET A RIDE BECAUSE I CANT TRUST TO DRIVE IT. THE PROBLEM STARTED LATE FEBRUARY 2014. I TOOK MY JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND EXPLAINED MY PROBLEM IN GREAT DETAIL AND THEY WERE AWARE OF THE THIS PROBLEM, THE DEATH WOBBLE. SO THEY CALLED ME LATER AND SAID IT'S FIXED. WHICH IT WASN'T I PULLED OUT AND ONLY A FEW MINUTES LATER IT HAPPENED SO I WENT BACK AND ASKED THEM IF THEY BOTHERED TO TEST DRIVE TO SEE IF IT WAS ACTUALLY FIXED AND THEY SAID NO. THIS BLEW MY MIND ESPECIALLY SINCE IT'S DANGEROUS. SO AFTER THEY PUT ON A NEW STABILIZER BAR I TOOK IT TO A NEW PLACE SINCE THAT WAS THE 4TH BAD EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD WITH THAT DEALERSHIP. THE BACK UP PLACE STARTED THEIR INSPECTION OF PROBLEM AND NOTICED THE STABILIZER WAS FAULTY AND HE STARTED WITH REPLACING THAT AGAIN. I GOT THE JEEP BACK TO ONLY FIND IT WAS STILL NOT FIXED. I'VE TAKEN THE JEEP BACK 5 TIMES TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS REPLACED IN THIS ORDER: STABILIZER BAR/WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND TIRE ROTATION, STABILIZER BAR AGAIN, ALL NEW SHOCKS, STEERING DAMPER/TIE ROD ENDS, AND TRACK BAR. $2000 WORTH OF WORK AND IT IS STILL NOT FIXED. NOW I'M AT A POINT WHERE I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THE MECHANIC IS STUMPED AND REPLACED THE ENTIRE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. I FEEL LIKE THIS VEHICLE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE SO NOW I'M STUCK WITH A LEMON OR SELL TO SOMEONE ELSE WHICH IS NOT RIGHT EITHER. I'M BLOWN AWAY THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM AND THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAS DONE NOTHING TO REMEDY ISSUE. THIS AS KNOWN AS THE JEEP DEATH WOBBLE. IT HAS NOW DONE IT 5 TIMES, 3 OF WHICH WERE AFTER THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY FIXED IT. THE FIRST TIME THEY PUT A NEW DAMPER ON IT. NOW IT IS IN THE SHOP AGAIN AFTER THAT DIDN'T WORK AND THEY ARE PUTTING NEW TIRES ON IT. AFTER READING MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ONLINE, IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT NEW TIRES ARE NOT GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. EVERY TIME YOUR FRONT END SHAKES VIOLENTLY LIKE THAT, THE CHANCES OF DAMAGING COMPONANTS FURTHER INCREASES. MY RESEARCH HAS ALSO SHOWN ME THAT MANY, MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM AND THEY HAVE HAD TROUBLE GETTING ANYONE TO STEP UP AND FIX THE PROBLEM. MY FIRST EXPERIENCE OCCURED ON DECEMBER 23, 2011, AND MY MOST RECENT EXPERIENCE WAS ON FEBRUARY 17, 2012. 5 DEATH WOBBLES IN ALL, AND IT GETS WORSE EACH TIME. HAVING LITTLE CONTROL OVER THE STEERING AND FRONT END CREATES WHAT I AM SURE YOU WILL SEE IS A DEADLY COMBINATION IN ANY CONDITION. *TR

AFTER FIGHTING WITH JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAD TO PAY FOR A SET OF RECOMMENDED UPGRADED WRANGLER SILENT ARMOR TIRES. JEEP "STRONGLY SUGGESTED" THAT I DO THIS EVEN THOUGH MY OLD TIRES, ORIGINAL JEEP WRANGLER TIRES, WERE IN GOOD CONDITION. JEEP REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE TIRES EVEN THOUGH IT ACKNOWLEDGED THE DEATH WOBBLE HAD WORN PATTERNS IN THE OLD TIRES. JEEP PUT IN A MOPAR STABILIZER, AND INSISTED THIS WOULD CURE THE MANUFACTURING DEFECT. TWO WEEKS AFTER INSTALLATION OF THE NEW TIRES AND NEW STABILIZER/DAMPER BY THE AUTHORIZED JEEP SERVICE PROVIDER, THE DEATH WOBBLE RECURRED. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP AND THE DEATH WOBBLE WAS REPLICATED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER WHO DROVE THE WRANGLER WHILE I WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. AFTER HAGGLING, JEEP AGREED TO REPLACE THE STABILIZER. THIS IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF BEING RESOLVED. SEVERAL THINGS TO REMEMBER: (1) CALL JEEP, REGARDLESS OF THE YEAR OF YOUR VEHICLE OR WARRANTY STATUS. PLEASE, DON'T LET JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE TELL YOU THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY ARE NOT ACCOUNTABLE. KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECTS HAVE NO WARRANTY LIMITATIONS AND RECALLS CAN BE MADE REGARDLESS OF OUT-OF-WARRANTY STATUS. (2) PRESS JEEP FOR REIMBURSEMENT FOR ALL OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES YOU'VE MADE TRYING TO FIX THEIR PROBLEM. I WAS NOT 100% SUCCESSFUL, BUT I AM STILL APPEALING TO THEM, ESPECIALLY SINCE REPAIRS WERE MADE BY THEIR OWN DEALERSHIP. MY NEXT STEP WILL BE THE SMALL CLAIMS COURT, IF NOT FEDERAL. (3) REPORT THIS PROBLEM TO THE NHTSA! THE DEATH WOBBLE IS REAL AND IT PUTS LIVES AT RISK. IF THERE ARE NO COMPLAINTS, THERE ARE NO RECALLS OR FIXES, AND LIVES WILL BE LOST, IF THEY HAVEN'T ALREADY. MY 2007 JEEP UNLIMITED SAHARA HAS THE "DEATH WOBBLE." OCCURRED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. MECHANIC COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT, BUT PRESCRIBED TIRE INFLATION. PROBLEM WENT AWAY UNTIL ONE WEEK AGO. CAN BE EASILY REPLICATED BY GOING OVER A SPEED BUMP AT ABOUT 25 MPH AND TURNING THE WHEEL TO THE LEFT SHARPLY. ALTERNATIVELY, JUST TRAVELING ABOVE 40-45 MPH ON A HIGHWAY, ESPECIALLY ON A CURVE, WILL REPLICATE. IF ANY OTHER JEEP DRIVER HAS THIS PROBLEM, THE ONLY WAY TO PROTECT YOURSELF IS TO BRAKE SLOWLY, GET OFF THE ROAD AND DRIVE UNDER 40 MPH...AND MUCH SLOWER WHILE TURNING EVEN ON SIDE STREETS. IF YOU MUST DRIVE ON A HIGHWAY, STAY IN THE SLOW LANE SO THAT YOU CAN EXIT TO THE SHOULDER WITH RELATIVE SAFETY, AND ENGAGE YOUR HAZARD LIGHTS. OBVIOUSLY, THESE ARE NOT PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS AND ULTIMATE CULPABILITY MUST LIE WITH THE MANUFACTURER, WHO HAS BEEN PUT ON ALERT OF THIS PERSISTENT PROBLEM FOR MANY MONTHS IF NOT YEARS. STEERING/SUSPENSION. WE HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH EXCESSIVE WOBBELING AND SWAYING OF OUR JEEP. BELIEVE THIS TO BE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE TIE RODS AND STABELIZING SYSTEM. WHILE DRIVING @ APPROXIMATELY 55MPH ON RT 50 NEAR RT 28 IN FAIRFAX CO VA I FELT A SLIGHT VIBRATION IN THE FRONT END WHICH IMMEDIATELY BECAME A VIOLENT VIBRATION TO THE POINT I HAD TROUBLE STEERING THE VEHICLE WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND NEARLY CRASHED. I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND GOT OUT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE, FULLY EXPECTING TO FIND A FLAT TIRE OR WORSE, THINKING MAYBE A TIRE ACTUALLY FELL OFF. I FOUND NOTHING WRONG WHICH WAS PERPLEXING. I CONTINUED ON MY WAY WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT THAT DAY. SINCE THAT DAY I'VE HAD AT LEAST FIVE MORE INCIDENTS OF THE SAME NATURE WITH VARYING DEGREES OF NEAR MISSES REGARDING AN ACCIDENT. IT'S FRIGHTENING AND CLEARLY SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I'VE RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND IT'S APPARENT THE PROBLEM IS WIDELY KNOWN AS THE "DEATH WOBBLE" WITH MANY SUGGESTED FIXES. THE DEALER WITH WHOM I HAVE MY JEEP SERVICED HAS ACKNOWLEDGED HEARING ABOUT A FRONT END SHIMMY BUT NO DEATH WOBBLE (FAIROAKS CHRYSLER, DODGE JEEP). THEY SUGGEST REPLACING THE FRONT STABILIZER BAR WITH A "HEAVY DUTY" ONE AND SAID IT WILL FIX THE ISSUE ($660.00). IRONICALLY, THE "HEAVY DUTY" STABILIZER APPEARS TO BE STOCK ON MODELS BEG. WITH THE 2010 MODEL YEAR OR AT A MINIMUM THEY HAVE CHANGED THE CONFIGURATION AND PLACEMENT OF THE STABILIZER WHICH INDICATES TO ME THEY (CHRYSLER/JEEP) CLEARLY RECOGNIZED THERE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. I IMPLORE YOU TO INVESTIGATE THIS MOST SERIOUS DEFECT BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. *KB

I OWN A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED SAHARA. TWO BIG COMPLAINTS. FIRST, WITH 51,000 MY JEEP HAS STARTED TO EXHIBIT WHAT IS COMMONLY CALLED THE "DEATH WOBBLE", APPARENTLY NOW AN INFAMOUS REALITY AMONG JEEP OWNERS UP TO THE 2010 MODELS (WHICH I AM TOLD, JEEP CORRECTED WITH A STABILIZER BAR REDESIGN). 45 MPH ON SMOOTH ROADS AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE FRONT END STARTS JUMPING UNCONTROLLABLY, AND THE ONLY WAY TO GET CONTROL IS TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES. I HAVE REBALANCED AND THEN REPLACED THE TIRES, AND HAVE HAD THE FRONT SUSPENSION CHECKED -- EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE IN ORDER, AND NO MECHANIC CAN FIGURE OUT THE TRUE "FIX". I WANT TO KNOW WHY NHTSA HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL OR SERVICE NOTICE ON AN ISSUE THAT IS SO DANGEROUS? THE CONSISTENCY OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE DESIGN ERROR IN THE STEERING AND FRONT END OF THESE VEHICLES IS OVERWHELMING. SECOND ISSUE IS THAT MY GAS TANK DOES NOT ALLOW FOR THE AUTO-CUT-OFF FOR GAS PUMP OPERATIONS -- WHENEVER I FILL UP THE TANK, THE GAS RUSHES UP THE TANK LINE WITH APPARENTLY NO BAFFLING AND COMES POURING OUT. AND NO, I AM NOT AN IDIOT WHO IS OVERFILLING THE TANK -- WHETHER THE PUMP IS ON AUTOMATIC FILL, OR I DO IT CAREFULLY MANUALLY, THE SAME THING HAPPENS -- THE TANK SUDDENLY FILLS AND SHOOTS GAS OUT OF THE FILLER CAP AREA. THERE IS SOMETHING DEFINITELY WRONG HERE. I DID SEE THAT THERE HAS BEEN A PRIOR INVESTIGATION ON A SIMILAR COMPLAINT FOR THESE VEHICLES, AND THAT NHTSA DETERMINED NOT TO PURSUE A RECALL. I THINK THE ISSUE NEEDS TO GET REVISITED. THE LAME DODGE THAT NHTSA BELIEVED THAT MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE WERE "INTERNET DRIVEN" SOUNDS FECKLESS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER SAHARA. THE CONTACT STATED, WHEN DRIVING AT 35 MPH OR ABOVE, THE VEHICLE WOULD SHAKE EXCESSIVELY. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE TRACK BAR AND THE BUSHINGS WERE REPLACED, AS WELL AS THE TIRES THAT WERE ROTATED AND BALANCED, BUT THE SHAKING CONTINUED. HE MOVED A BAR IN THE FRONT OF MY JEEP AND SAID THIS SHOULDN'T MOVE AND TO HAVE IT TOWED. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST JEEP DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR!
