As I was driving home from work on Feb. 14, 2023, in Rocky Hill, NJ. the vehicle developed a sudden loss of steering control. I had it towed to Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Princeton, NJ. The service manager informed me that the area of the frame to which the steering gear box is bolted had completely rotted, and the steering box had separated. The car was not driveable and could not be repaired. The vehicle will be available for inspection until April 15, 2023.
Keep wobble almost caused head on collision afraid to drive vehicle over 55 mph

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO NHTSA COMPLAINT 10919986 - DEATH WOBBLE, I HAVE REPLACED THE STOCK STEERING DAMPER AND ADDED AN ADDITIONAL STEERING DAMPER FOR THE DRIVER SIDE STEERING ROD. THIS HAS RESOLVED THE REPORTED DEATH WOBBLE WHEN DRIVING OVER 50 MPH. ROD DEFLECTION HAS BEEN PREVENTED BY ADDING THE DRIVER SIDE DAMPER. PLEASE MAKE THIS AVAILABLE AS A SOLUTION. I SEE MANY PEOPLE HAVE SPENT WELL OVER $1,000 FOR NEW SUSPENSION PARTS ETC. THIS IS A $60 STEERING DAMPER SHOCK FIX!! PLEASE PASS ALONG. I SHOCKED THIS IS NOT OBVIOUS AT THE DEALER, THE DRIVER STEERING ROD IS LONG AND WILL HAVE DEFLECTION AT HIGH SPEED/BUMPS, LIKE A TUNING FORK. *TR

JEEP DEATH WOBBLE - MINE TOO, OVER 50 MPH, RANDOM WOBBLE OTHER TIMES DRIVES SMOOTH, BUMPS DO INITIATE IT NOT ALWAYS THOUGH, READ ALL THE COMPLAINTS ON NHTSA, STABILIZER IS KEY TO RESOLVING THE ISSUE AND STEERING DAMPER. I BELIEVE THIS DESIGN PROMOTES ACCELERATED WEAR OF THESE PARTS WHICH IS WHY THERE ARE REPORTS OF IT COMING BACK AFTER A YEAR OR SO. I'M SURPRISED THERE IS NO DEALER FIX FOR THIS, ADMITTING THE NEED FOR HEAVIER STEERING COMPONENTS. I'LL BE GETTING AFTER MARKET HEAVY DUTY JUST TO DRIVE ON THE STREET. THE FUEL ISSUE IS ANOTHER ONE THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED, HAD TO GO THROUGH 300 PLUS ENTRIES HERE TO FIND ANSWERS TO THE OPDA PROBLEM. MINE HAS NOT STARTED WITH THE FUEL ISSUE BUT AT LEAST I WILL KNOW WHAT IT IS WHEN IT DOES OCCUR.

JEEP HAS SEVERE DEATH WOBBLE WHEN TRAVELING @60 MPH. FRONT WHEELS WILL START TO VIBRATE VIOLENTLY AT THIS SPEED AND SEEMS TO START WHEN HITTING A BUMP OR IMPERFECTION IN ROAD SURFACE. REQUIRED ACTION IS TO APPLY BRAKES UNTIL SHAKING STOPS WHICH COULD INVOLVE A DECREASE IN SPEED OF 15 MPH OR MORE CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I HAVE HAD VEHICLE INSPECTED AT THREE SHOPS WITH NO WORN COMPONENTS FOUND. HAD AN ALIGNMENT PERFORMED TIRES BALANCED TRACK BAR MOUNT REPLACED CONTROL ARM MOUNT REINFORCED REPLACED STEERING STABILIZER REPLACED TIE ROD END REPLACED SWAY BAR LINKS AND STILL PROBLEM IS NO BETTER. JEEP ONLY HAS 49,000 MILES SO NOTHING IS REALLY WORN TOO BAD. THIS PROBLEM STARTED ROUGHLY 10,000 MILES AGO AND I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NEXT OTHER THAN REPLACING EVERY STEERING AND SUSPENSION COMPONENT AT A COST OF PROBABLY A COST OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE COIL SPRUNG JEEPS WITH A TRACK BAR WHICH SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW. JUST WANT TO ADD THE VEHICLE IS A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO THE FACT YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THE WOBBLE WILL START AND IF YOU ARE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HAVE TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO REGAIN CONTROL OF YOUR VEHICLE IT COULD BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. CHRYSLER/JEEP NEEDS TO REMEDY THIS ENGINEERING FLAW NOT EXPECT CONSUMERS TO FOOT THE BILL.

THE CONTACT HAD TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER FOR THE FAILURE TO CEASE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SPECULATED THAT THE STEERING STABILIZER, BALL JOINTS, BRAKES, OR CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. I HAVE NEW TIRES, AND THE VEHICLE WAS JUST PURCHASED USED FROM THE DEALERSHIP, AFTER HAVING RECEIVED A FULL SERVICE. I TOOK IT INTO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP THAT CONFIRMED THAT EVERYTHING LOOKED OK, AND THE BUSHINGS WERE FINE. *TR

I HAVE REPLACED THE SHOCKS, STRUTS, STABILIZER BAR, TRACK BAR, SPRINGS, SPACERS, CALIPERS, HUBS, NEW TIRES, BALANCE AND ROTATE TIRE EVERY 5000-6000 MILES, NEW FRONT BRAKES, NEW BACK BRAKES, TWO REAR ALIGNMENTS, 3 FRONT ALIGNMENTS, AND ROTORS, I DEATH WOBBLE HAS GONE FROM BAD TO DANGEROUSLY WORSE. MY WRANGLER IS A FACTORY RIGHT HAND DRIVE JEEP THAT I USE TO DELIVER MAIL. I WAS USING AS MY PRIMARY CAR AS WELL. I MUST DRIVE 25 MILES TO WORK VIA INTERSTATE AND THEN ANOTHER 65 MILES ON MY ROUTE. THE CAR CONSISTENTLY SHAKES WHEN I HIT SPEEDS OF 45 MPH OR HIGHER. A BUMP IN THE ROAD WILL TRIGGER THE WOBBLE AS WELL. I SPOKE TO TWO DIFFERENT JEEP DEALERSHIPS TODAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN TO AT LEAST 6 DIFFERENT MECHANIC SHOPS, ONE OFF ROAD SHOP, AND TWO DIFFERENT ALIGNMENT SHOPS. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD TRY REPLACING THE GEAR BOX ($899.99) AND ALSO TRY REPLACING MY RIMS! IF THE MAKER OF MY VEHICLE HAS NO IDEA ON WHAT OR HOW TO FIX IT........THEN WHO WILL? I WOULD LIKE TO RESOLVE MY DEATH WOBBLE. I AM EXTREMELY ANNOYED! IT WAS SHAKING SO BAD I THOUGHT THAT SURELY MY FRONT END WAS COMING APART SO, I GOOGLED MY PROBLEM AND WAS LED TO A PLETHORA OF INFORMATION AND FOUND THE TERM "DEATH WOBBLE", I THOUGHT IT FELT LIKE DRIVING OVER RAILROAD TRACKS, BUT DEATH WOBBLE SEEMS TO ALSO BE AN APPROPRIATE TERM AS WELL, BECAUSE THE FRONT END SEEMS TO BE SHAKING TO DEATH. IN MY PARTICULAR CASE THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY AFTERMARKET MODIFICATIONS, IT'S AS STOCK AS THEY COME. ANYWAY, KEVIN'S RECOMMENDED SOLUTION TO MY "WOBBLE" IS TO REPLACE THE TRACK BAR, THE STEERING DAMPER, CONTROL ARMS AND BUSHINGS. THE COST FOR THIS IS AROUND $366 FOR THE PARTS AND I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE LABOR COSTS WILL BE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MAYBE SOMEONE AT CHRYSLER SHOULD ACTUALLY GO DRIVE ONE BEFORE THEY SAY "IT'S NOT OUR FAULT". THEY SHOULD BE PART OF THE SOLUTION SINCE THEY CREATED THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED THAT LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE STEERING ASSEMBLY. THE STEERING ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED AND THE FAILURE WAS CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WA 82,000. THE DEALER DID ACKNOWLEDGE THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT HAVE A FIX FOR IT. THE CONSUMER STATED HE FOUND A MECHANIC THAT WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND ALL FOUR CONTROL ARMS, TRAC BAR AND STEERING SHOCK WERE REPLACED. I HAVE NOW FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS CALLED THE "JEEP DEATH WOBBLE" AND HAS HUNDREDS OF LIKE COMPLAINTS. MY TIRE WOBBLES TERRIBLY AT AROUND 55 MILES PER HOUR. I BOUGHT MY 2005 JEEP UNLIMITED WITH 6,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVEN TIMES TO HAVE IT FIXED. MY MAJOR COMPLAINT IS IT SURGES OUT OF CONTROL WHEN TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKES FROM A STOPPED POSITION. IT DOES IT IN DRIVE AND IN REVERSE WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS NO SOLUTION. I ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKING ONCE I HIT A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD,AS SMALL AS THE REFLECTORS THAT LINE THE MIDDLE OF STREETS. THERE ARE TIMES THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES SO HARD THAT I HAVE TO LET GO OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THEY HAVE REPLACED MY STEERING STABILIZER ARM,I'VE HAD THE ROTORS TURNED I'VE REPLACED THE BRAKES.REPLACING THE STABILIZER ARM SEEMED TO HELP FOR A SHORT TIME. MY OTHER ISSUE WITH THIS LOVLEY DEATH TRAP OF MINE IS WHEN I RUN THE A/C THE WHOLE THING BOGS DOWN LIKE I'M PULLING AN EIGHTEEN WHEELER OUT OF A DITCH. THE DEALERSHIP SOLUTION WAS TO COME IN AND TEST DRIVE ANOTHER JEEP TO SEE IF I "ACTUALLY HAVE A PROBLEM". WHEN I TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY KEEP IT FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS AND THE PROBLEMS ARE STILL THERE.MY ADVICE TO OTHER JEEP OWNERS WITH THESE PROBLEMS IS TO ALWAYS TAKE THE BACK ROADS AND ALWAYS LEAVE A CAR LENGTH OF SPACE ALL THE WAY AROUND YOUR JEEP, AND NEVER USE THE A/C!THESE PROBLEMS BEGAN AT ABOUT 10,000 MILES AND MY JEEP JUST ROLLED OVER32,000 MILES. *JB
WE PURCHASED OUR 2005 JEEP WRANGLER X USED IN MAY OF 2006. THE FIRST TIME WE TOOK IT ABOVE 50 MPH, WE NOTICED A SERIOUS VIBRATION IN THE FRONT END. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AGAIN ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER, AND THEY TOOK IT TO A JEEP DEALER AND HAD THERE MECHANICS LOOK AT IT, AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. AFTER TAKING IT BACK AND COMPLAINING AGAIN, THEY CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE TIRES WERE BAD. THEY REPLACED THE TIRES. THAT SEEMED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR A LITTLE WHILE. SINCE THEN, WE NEVER TOOK THE VEHICLE ON HIGHWAYS OR ANY ROADS THAT YOU HAD TO TRAVEL ABOVE 50 MPH. WE JUST HAD IT INSPECTED IN JUNE OF 2007, AND IT PASSED WITH NO PROBLEMS. TWO DAYS AGO, WE HAD TO TRAVEL ON AN INTERESTATE THAT THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 65. WE NEVER MADE IT ABOVE 55. WE HAD TO BRAKE AND THE FRONT END BEGAN TO SHAKE SO BAD THAT WE ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I KNOW OF OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME YEAR JEEP. THERE IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM GOING ON WITH THESE VEHICLES. I JUST HOPE THAT SOMEONE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE KILLED BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE ABOUT IT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS JEEP WILL NEVER SEE 55 MPH AGAIN UNTIL THIS PROBLEM IS RESOLVED. ALSO, NOW WE NOW WHY SOMEONE WOULD GET RID OF IT. IT ONLY HAS 29000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE AN 88 BRONCO II THAT I FEEL SAFER DRIVING THAN I DO THIS JEEP.
STEERING FEELS LOOSE AND WOBBLY WHEN GOING ABOVE 45 MPH. TAKING IT IN TO GET LOOKED AT NEXT WEEK - CLOSET APPT. I CAN GET - I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS ANYWHERE. OTHER PROBLEMS TOO AND THERE IS ONLY 18K MILES ON IT. *JB
I HAD THE FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH THE FRONT END SHIMMYING WHEN I HAD APPROXIMATELY 15,000 MILES ON THE JEEP. IT HAPPENED AFTER CROSSING A SEAM IN THE PAVEMENT ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH. IT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN WHEN HITTING ANY SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD. I TOOK THE JEEP TO THE DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED THE STEERING STABILIZER WITH A HEAVY DUTY MODEL BUT IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE. I STILL HAD THE PROBLEM. I COULD NOT LET MY WIFE OR CHILDREN DRIVE THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE IT COULD EASILY SEND YOU EITHER OFF THE ROAD OR INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHEN THE SHIMMY OCCURS. YOU HAVE TO COME TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE IT WILL STOP SHAKING AND DRIVE NORMAL AGAIN. *AK

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE ENGAGES IN A "DEATH WOBBLE" (UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKING) CAUSED BY STEERING SUSPENSION FAILURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING DIMPLER, BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 9,617. THE VIN IS UNKNOWN.

UNCONTROLLABLE HANDLING ( IN THE FRONT END) WHEN GOING AN EXCESS SPEED OF 45 MILES OR MORE AND HIT ANY KIND /SIZE BUMP IN ROAD. FOUND OUT IT WAS THE STABILIZER BAR. WHEN I FIRST TOOK MY CAR IN (MONTHS AGO) THEY TOLD ME ( CHRYSLER) IT WAS MY ROTORS. DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HOW MY ROTORS COULD DO THAT SINCE I WASN'T BRAKING AT THE TIME THE SHAKING WAS HAPPENING. I ENDED UP TAKING IT TO A MECHANIC AND THEY FIGURED OUT WHAT IT WAS. THE GUYS AT CHRYSLER HAVE A NICKNAME FOR IT; "SUDDEN DEATH". NOT ONCE DID I GET A RECALL LETTER ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THEY MUST OF BEEN WORRIED ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT ONLY TOOK THEM ABOUT 2 HOURS TO FIX IT. THEY WENT AND BOUGHT AN AFTER MARKET STABILIZER BAR. I HAVE HAD OIL CHANGES FROM THE SAME PLACE THAT HAVE TAKEN LONGER. I HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT A YEAR WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THE SHAKING BUT I HEARD ABOUT OTHER WRANGLERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LET OTHER JEEP OWNERS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM . IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. *JB
