I JUST BOUGHT THIS JEEP USED. I WAS FILLING IT UP AT THE GAS STATION WAITING FOR THE PUMP TO CLICK OFF. WELL, IT DIDN'T. THE GAS SPEWED OUT OF THE FILLER NECK. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A FAULTY PUMP. THE SECOND TIME I FILLED IT UP, IT DID IT AGAIN, AT A DIFFERENT STATION. THIS TIME I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID. IT DID IT AGAIN TONIGHT AT A THIRD STATION. I LOOKED UP THE CONDITION ON THE INTERNET AND LOW AND BEHOLD, IT IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH MY MODEL YEAR. THIS VEHICLE IS A 2006. WHILE FILLING UP THE GAS TANK, MY JEEP WILL FREQUENTLY SPIT THE FUEL BACK AT ME WHEN IT APPROACHES BEING FULL. THIS ALMOST ALWAYS RESULTS IN A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUEL LEFT ON THE GROUND AND INSIDE THE GAS CAP AREA. THE GAS WILL ALSO SPRAY ALL OVER THE VEHICLE'S OPERATOR AND THEIR CLOTHING. I WAS FUELING THE VEHICLE AND THE AUTOMATIC FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE OR WHATEVER IS INSIDE THE FUEL TANK MALFUNCTIONED. FUEL EJECTED FROM WITHIN THE FILL NECK AND WAS PROPELLED ONTO MY FACE AND IN MY EYES! I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN WITH ANY VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED OR FUELED. I WAS STANDING ADJACENT TO MY VEHICLE AS MOST DO WHEN GETTING GAS, I HEARD THE GAS GURGLE LIKE IT NORMALLY DOES, THE PUMP CLICKED OFF AND A SECOND LATER MY EYES WERE SLAMMED SHUT AND BURNING. AFTER RESEARCHING THE ISSUE I HAVE COME TO FIND THAT CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND HAS ACTUALLY TAKEN STEPS TO CORRECT IT IN 2007 AND NEWER VEHICLES. I DON'T KNOW TO WHAT EXTENT THAT IS TRUE BUT THIS IS A HUGE HAZARD. THERE IS SOME PLASTIC VALVING WITHIN THE FILLER NECK THAT FAILS TO KEEP FUEL WITHIN THE TANK AND IT IS APPARENTLY ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY THE ETHANOL MIXTURE IN GASOLINE. THAT'S THE EXPLANATION ON MANY WEB SITES. I DON'T CARE WHAT CAUSES THE ISSUE BUT IT IS A POOR, DANGEROUS DESIGN. IF IT WAS A FREAK ISSUE THEN I WOULD TAKE IT IN STRIDE BUT TO FIND THAT CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF IT AND DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT FOR MY MODEL YEAR IS APPALLING. THIS IS AN ISSUE OF A HIGHLY FLAMMABLE FUEL UNDER PRESSURE BEING PROJECTED UPWARDS TOWARD ANYONE FUELING A VEHICLE AND IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE NHTSA RECEIVED A REPORT FROM CHRYSLER THAT THE ISSUE EXISTED YET THEY WERE NOT REQUIRED TO RECALL ANY AND ALL VEHICLES EXPERIENCING THE ISSUE. GASOLINE IN THE EYES IS VERY PAINFUL. PERIOD. I WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE FROM THE GAS STATION AND HAD TO HAVE ANOTHER MOTORIST MOVE MY VEHICLE FROM THE PUMPS. MY DAUGHTER ROUTINELY STANDS BY ME WHEN "DADDY DOES THINGS" AND I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW I WOULD HAVE FELT IF SHE WAS THERE THAT DAY. IN MY OPINION, YOUR AGENCY WAS DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE MOTORING PUBLIC FROM THIS VERY TYPE OF POOR DESIGN IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY AND I TRUST THAT YOU WILL MAKE IT RIGHT. *TR

THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN TREATED POORLY, AND ALL OF THE COMPONENTS ARE OEM. I'VE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM IN YOUR DATA BASE AND HAVE FOUND OVER 300 COMPLAINTS FOR MY MODEL YEAR ALONE THAT MATCH. I'VE BEEN A FIREFIGHTER FOR 12 YEARS, SO I KNOW WHEN A PROBLEM CAN BE SERIOUS, AND THIS IS ONE. I'VE LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE PEOPLE HACKING IN PARTS FROM OTHER MANUFACTURERS TO FIX THIS, HOWEVER I'M NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS IDEA. *TR

DURING THE FIRST YEAR OR SO, THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT SPLASHED BACK OUT OF THE TANK DEPENDED ON THE GASOLINE FLOW RATE AND SENSITIVITY OF THE PUMP NOZZLE SHUT-OFF MECHANISM. SOMETIMES THE SOUND OF GASOLINE STARTING TO BACK UP IN THE FILLER NECK IS USED TO SHUT-OFF THE PUMP NOZZLE BEFORE THE GASOLINE SPLASHES OUT, BUT OFTEN IT IS TOO NOISY AROUND GAS STATIONS TO HEAR IT AND/OR THE GASOLINE IS FLOWING TOO FAST TO TURN IT OFF IN TIME. IN THE LAST YEAR, HOWEVER, FUEL HAS BEEN SPLASHING OUT JUST ABOUT EVERY TIME THE TANK IS REFUELED. IT SPLASHES OUT ON THE FENDER PANEL UNDER THE FILLER OPENING, ONTO THE UNDERCARRIAGE, AND ON THE GROUND. THIS CREATES A HAZARDOUS, MESSY, AND WASTEFUL SPILL OF GASOLINE. MULTIPLE DIFFERENT PUMPS AT MULTIPLE DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS OF MULTIPLE DIFFERENT BRANDS DO IT CONSISTENTLY -- I CAN NO LONGER REMBER THE LAST TIME THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. MANUALLY SLOWING THE DELIVERY RATE DOWN TO 1% OF THE NORMAL DELIVERY RATE AS THE TANK APPROACHES FULL CAN REDUCE, BUT ONLY SOMETIMES ELIMINATE THE CONDITION. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD DUE TO THE SPILLED GAS. I BELIEVE THIS IS A FIRE RISK, AS WELL AS A RISK TO PERSONAL PROPERTY FROM THE SPLASHING GAS. I'M TOLD THAT THIS IS DUE TO A BAD VALVE IN THE FUEL TANK THAT WAS DESIGNED TO STOP THIS CONDITION, BUT THAT VALVE STICKS. WHEN ADDING FUEL TO THE 2006 JEEP WRANGLER EITHER WITH AN AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF PUMP OR BY HAND THE FUEL OVER SPRAYS OUT OF THE NOZZLE HOLE WHEN THE TANK BECOMES FULL. IN ALMOST ALL CASES, EMPLOYEES FROM THE STATION MUST COME OUT AND COMPLETE REMEDIATION EFFORTS TO ABSORB THE SPILLED GAS. IN MOST CASES, I RECEIVE A GOOD DOUSING OF GAS ON MY HANDS AND CLOTHES. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND BECAUSE MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO AGE, NOT MILES, THEY HAVE INFORMED ME THAT I WILL NEED TO PAY UPWARDS OF $1,000 FOR A NEW GAS TANK WITH THE SAME FAULTY CHECK-VALVE DESIGN. I UNDERSTAND THAT CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND THAT THEY STATE THE CAUSE TO BE FROM A SWOLLEN CHECK-VALVE RELATED TO ETHANOL GAS. TO THIS DAY THIS CONTINUES TO RESULT IN GASOLINE SPILLING ON VEHICLE MYSELF AND THE GROUND ALMOST EVERY TIME I FILL MY TANK. THE ONLY REMEDY I HAVE FOUND IS TO NOT FILL THE TANK ALL THE WAY UP, WHICH IS SOMETIME DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP DETERMINED I NEEDED A NEW FUEL TANK INSTALLED ($700). I HAVE NOT HAD THE TANK REPLACED AS THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM WILL NOT OCCUR AGAIN AS THE PARTS ARE, TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, NOT UPDATED FROM THE PARTS ON THE VEHICLE NOW. I HAVE COME TO LEARN THAT MANY JEEP WRANGLER OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. JEEP HAS IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS BEING A STUCK CHECK BALL THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. TO REMEDY THE SITUATION, THEY RECOMMEND THAT YOU BUY A NEW GAST TANK. HOWEVER, NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE NEW GAS TANKS, SO IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE YOU WOULD START TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN. THIS HAPPENS AT VARIOUS FUEL STATIONS AND VARIOUS TYPES OF PUMPS. IT APPEARS THAT JEEP IS CLAIMING THIS IS A "NORMAL" WEAR ITEM WHEN IN FACT IT ISN'T. WHEN FILLING UP MY FUEL TANK NORMALLY AND NOT TOPPING IT OFF, FUEL SPRAYS OUT OF THE FILLER NECK BEFORE THE PUMP CAN SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I FILL THE TANK SPILLING GAS ON MYSELF AND ON THE GROUND. THERE IS NO WAY TO AVOID IT UNLESS I DO NOT FILL THE TANK UP. I TOOK THE JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAY I NEED A NEW FUEL TANK. MY JEEP IS OUT OF WARRANTY BUT THERE ARE MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM INDICATING THAT IT'S A FAULTY ROLLOVER VALVE YET CHRYSLER DENIES THAT IT'S A DEFECTIVE PART. *TR
