ON MAY 29TH OF 2014 I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 JEEP WRANGLER DOWN A 4 LANE CITY STREET AT ABOUT 3000 RPM. I HAD JUST TAKEN OFF FROM A RED LIGHT WHEN I HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION THAT RESULTED IN A FIRE UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE GAS TANK EXPLODED AND THE FIRE COVERED THE BOTTOM OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. THERE WAS DAMAGE UNDER THE HOOD ON THE ENGINE SIDE OF THE FIREWALL ON WHAT APPEARED TO BE FUEL LINES. LUCKILY THERE WAS A QUICK RESPONSE BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHO QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE, BUT MY JEEP HAS BEEN RENDERED UN-DRIVABLE. I HAVE CONTACTED BOTH CHRYSLER AND THE DEALERSHIP BUT NOT ASSISTANCE THERE. THE CHRYSLER INVESTIGATION TEAM WOULD NOT EVEN TAKE A LOOK AT THE FUEL LINES THE MARSHAL DETERMINED STARTED THE FIRE. I WILL NEVER FEEL SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE OR ANY OTHER VEHICLE PRODUCED BY CHRYSLER EVER AGAIN. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO PERSONAL INJURY TO ME, BUT ONLY BECAUSE I HAD ALL THE DOORS AND TOP OFF WHICH ENABLED A RAPID ESCAPE. PLEASE TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK A THESE WRANGLERS AND FORCE CHRYSLER TO TAKE ACTION BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED. *TR

IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD FREQUENTLY FAIL TO IMMEDIATELY START. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE CODE. THE DEALER WIPED AND SPRAYED THE VENTS, BUT THE BURNING ODOR WAS STILL PRESENT AND THE STARTING FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ON OCCASIONALLY MAKING A WARNING BELL. I HAVE NO IDEA IF THE AIRBAG IS FUNCTIONAL. HAD IT TO THE DEALER ONCE BUT SINCE I WORK IN THIS VEHICLE I COULD NOT LEAVE IT SO THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE IF IT IS THE CLOCKSPRING OR AN AIRBAG MODULE. THE FUEL INLET ALSO SPEWS GAS WHEN FILLING UP THE GAS TANK. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE FUEL ISSUE, BUT I HAVE HAD PARTS ON ORDER FOR EIGHT MONTHS AND THEY ARE STILL ON BACKORDER.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT GASOLINE WAS ABNORMALLY LEAKING FROM THE GAS TANK. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A WAITING LIST FOR REPAIRS BECAUSE THE PART NEEDED WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,000. UPDATED 05/03/11*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE GAS TANK LEAKED AND OVERFLOWED. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE COULD ONLY FILL THE TANK HALF WAY. UPDATED 06/06/11

WHEN FUELING THE VEHICLE A LARGE AMOUNT OF FUEL OVERFLOWS FROM THE FUEL RECEPTACLE 1-2 SECONDS AFTER THE PUMP CUTS THE FLOW OF FUEL. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS FILLED AND HAS OCCURRED USING IN EXCESS OF 50 DIFFERENT FUELING STATIONS. APPROXIMATELY 1 QUART OF FUEL SPILLS DOWN THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE GROUND. THIS CREATES A SAFETY HAZARD AS WELL AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD.

STARTING IN NOVEMBER 2010 WITH LESS THAN 34,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE WHEN FILLING UP WITH FUEL THE JEEP WILL OVER FLOW ONCE FULL. NOW EVERY TIME THE FUEL NOZZLE IS CLICKED TO HOLD IN THE ON POSITION, FOR SOME REASON IT WILL NOT SHUT OFF IN TIME, NO MATTER WHAT GAS STATION I USE. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MYSELF AS WELL BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. I WOULD THINK THAT JEEP WOULD ISSUE A FULL RECALL TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE DEALERSHIP WHICH I PURCHASED THE JEEP DID REPLACE THE FUEL TANK, AND OTHER COMPONENTS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM.

THIS HAS OCCURRED WITH THE JEEP WRANGLER ON LOCAL GAS PUMPS THAT I USE FREQUENTLY TO FILL MY HONDA CIVIC WITHOUT INCIDENT.

STARTING WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS APPROXIMATELY 2 1/2 YEARS OLD, GASOLINE PUMPS NO LONGER SHUT OFF WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING FILLED WITH GAS AND THE TANK BECOMES FULL. GAS CONTINUES TO PUMP, SPILLING FROM THE VEHICLE, AND THE PUMP HAS TO BE MANUALLY SHUT OFF. IT DIDN'T DO THIS WHEN NEW, NOR DID MY PRIOR WRANGLER (2000 MODEL OWNED FOR 5 YEARS).

WHILE REFUELING MY JEEP THE GAS SPIT OUT OF THE FILLER NOZZLE AFTER THE PUMP HAD CLICKED OFF SPILLING GAS DOWN THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE AND ALL OVER THE GROUND. THIS IS ACTUALLY THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS OCCURRED IN AS MANY TIMES AS I HAVE PURCHASED GAS FOR THE JEEP.

WHEN FUELING MY JEEP THE AND AUTO SHUT OFF AT THE PUMP STOPS A FAIR AMOUNT OF FUEL COMES SPILLING OUT AND RUNS DOWN THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A DANGER AS THERE IS EXPOSED FUEL ON MY VEHICLE AND THE GROUND. THIS IS A WASTE OF MY MONEY AND A RISK TO THE ENVIRONMENT AS THE SPILL IS ON THE CONCRETE. WHEN RAIN OR WASHED THIS FUEL WILL BE INTRODUCED INTO THE WATER SYSTEM. ALSO THE DANGER IS OBVIOUS THAT THERE IS RAW FUEL FLOWING DOWN THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE.

WHEN FILLING THE GAS TANK AND ON AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF AT THE PUMP,THE PUMP WILL SHUT OFF AND THEN GAS WILL ALMOST SHOOT OUT OF THE FILLING TUBE. THIS HAPPENS ON AT ANY GAS STATION AND LEAVES GAS ALL DOWN THE SIDE OF THE JEEP AND ON THE GROUND. I NOW ONLY GET GAS WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON AND I CAN GUESS ON HOW MUCH GAS I NEED. AT FILL UP, I PUT THE PUMP TO AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF UNTIL I ESTIMATE I AM 2 GALLONS SHORT. I THEN FINISH OFF MANUALLY AT THE LOWEST FLOW RATE. THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE TO WORK.

WHEN FILLING GAS TANK A LARGE BACKSPLASH OF GAS COMES OUT AS TANK APPROACHES FULL. I TRIED ADJUSTING THE GAS HOSE NOZZLE BOTH IN AND OUT. SPLASHING OCCURS IN ALL CASES. GETS LESS THE FURTHER THE NOZZLE IS PULLED OUT. GAS COULD SPLASH ON PERSON STANDING CLOSE, MOSTLY RUNS DOWN SIDE OF JEEP AND ONTO AND OVER REAR BUMPER AND ONTO GROUND. SERVICE STATION ATTENDANTS HAVE COME OUT TO CHECK FOR ISSUE DUE TO AMOUNT OF GAS SPILLED. CAR HAD NO ISSUES WITH THIS FOR FIRST 3 YEARS. PROBLEM DEVELOPED SUDDENLY WITH NO WARNING. WHILE FILLING UP THE VEHICLE WITH GAS, AFTER THE GAS PUMP HANDLE SHUTS OFF, A PORTION OF GAS WILL FLOW OUT OF THE FILL TUBE. DIFFERENT POSITIONS OF THE GAS PUMP INSERTED INTO FILL TUBE STILL RESULTS IN GAS POURING OUT THE FILL TUBE. GAS WILL STILL POUR OUT OF THE FILL TUBE EVEN AT A VERY SLOW FILL RATE. DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS WERE USED WITH THE SAME RESULT. THERE IS GREAT CONCERN ABOUT THE SPILLED FUEL CATCHING FIRE ON THE VEHICLE OR A PERSON WHO THIS HAPPENS TO UNEXPECTED.

THE LAST THREE OR SO TIMES I'VE FILLED THE VEHICLE WITH GAS, THE AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF ON THE PUMP DOES NOT ENGAGE UNTIL FUEL HAS OVERFLOWED THE TANK AND SPILLED ONTO THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE GROUND. THIS HAPPENS REGARDLESS OF WHICH FUEL STATION I GO TO. EACH INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED AT A FUEL STATION WHERE I USED TO BE ABLE TO FILL MY TANK WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND THAT AN INVESTIGATION IS ALREADY OPEN REGARDING THIS ISSUE. I WOULD THINK A RECALL IS IN ORDER CONSIDERING THE PROXIMITY OF THE FUEL SPILL TO HOT BRAKE PADS AND OTHER POTENTIAL SOURCES OF IGNITION.

VEHICLE NOW SINCE DATE OF INITIAL OCCURRENCE SPEWS FUEL BACK OUT OF FILLER NECK WHEN FUELING. SPILT FUEL LAUNCHES OUT FROM TRAPPED PRESSURE IN TANK AND COVERS THE GROUND AND SIDE OF VEHICLE. IT ALSO SPLASHES ON OPERATOR BUT I USUALLY STAY BACK IF I CAN HELP IT. I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS BUT FIND THE STATION IS NOT A FACTOR IN THIS ISSUE. IT ALSO DOESN'T MATTER IF I STOP THE PUMP MANUALLY OR ALLOW THE MECHANICAL FEATURE OF THE PUMP STOP THE FUELING PROCESS. THE JEEP DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM WHEN NEW.

THE GAS TANK OVERFLOWS EVERY TIME IT IS FILLED UP. THE AUTOMATIC SHUT DOES NOT WORK. THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERY SINGLE TIME NO MATTER WHICH GAS STATION OR WHAT TYPE OF GAS. HOLDING THE NOZZLE AT DIFFERENT ANGLES DOES NOT HELP. THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID THIS IS TO PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE NUMBER OF GALLONS OF GAS BEING PUT IN THE TANK. THIS IS A HAZARD AS GAS GETS EVERYWHERE, ESPECIALLY THE PERSON PUMPING THE GAS AND WILL LIKELY RUIN THE PAINT JOB; ALSO LEADS TO WASTED GASOLINE/MONEY.

THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT HAD NOT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 39,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 34,000.
