Experiencing the death wobble.
THE JEEP HAS LESS THAN 40.000 IS AND IS NOT USED OFF ROAD. ABOUT 55MPH THE FRONT END GETS A OUT OF CONTROL WOBBLE. YOU HAVE TO SLOW WAY DOWN FOR IT TO STOP. IT HAS DONE A FEW TIMES BEFORE. THE LAST TIME IT WAS 4/29/20.THE TRACK BAR WAS REPLACED WITH OEM PART AND STILL DOES IT. IT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH A LOT OF WRANGLER JEEPS. I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS A DESIGN FLAW. DOING SOME RESEARCH IT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH JEEPS. THIS JEEP IT COMPLETELY STOCK WITH THE SAME TIRES IT CAME WITH NEW.

I HAVE A 2009 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED X, PURCHASED NEW. A FEW YEARS AFTER PURCHASE I BEGAN EXPERIENCING 'DEATH WOBBLE.' A MECHANIC'S DIAGNOSTIC STATED MY TRACK BAR WAS BENT AND MY BUSHINGS WERE WORN AND NEEDED REPLACING AS A RESULT OF ALL THE VIOLENT SIDE TO SIDE SHAKING. THIS WAS REPAIRED AT GREAT EXPENSE OUT OF POCKET. THIS REPAIR SEEMED EFFECTIVE FOR SOME TIME BEFORE THE SPEED WOBBLE STARTED UP AGAIN THIS PAST YEAR. DURING ONE EPISODE, THE HARSH SHAKING CAUSED MY LEFT SIDE BLINKERS AND BRAKE LIGHT TO FAIL. NO ONE SHOULD REASONABLY BE EXPECTED TO OPERATE A VEHICLE WHEN IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SUDDENLY, UNEXPECTEDLY, UNCONTROLLABLY, VIOLENTLY, HARSHLY, AND DANGEROUSLY START SHAKING, ESPECIALLY WHILE IN OPERATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I AVOID DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY ANYMORE BECAUSE I CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC BEFORE JARRING SHAKING WILL START. ANY DRIVING IS NOW INCREASINGLY DANGEROUS TO ME, MY PASSENGERS, AND OTHER NEARBY DRIVERS. THE UNCONTROLLABLY VIOLENT SHAKING IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL, FRIGHTENING, AND FORCES ME TO ABRUPTLY PULL OVER, GREATLY INCREASING MY CHANCES OF BEING SEVERELY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT. IT IS NOT RIGHT FOR JEEP OWNERS TO SUFFER THIS. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR JEEP. THEY SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR AND REIMBURSE JEEP OWNERS ANY AND ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH REPAIRS, ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION, INJURIES, DEATHS, DISTRESS, OR ANY OTHER CONDITIONS OR COMPLICATIONS ARISING FROM, RELATED TO, OR OTHERWISE RESULTING FROM 'DEATH WOBBLE.' CAUSES FOR THIS HAZARD VARY, SO DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIRS CAN BE EXTREMELY LENGTHY AND COSTLY, NOT TO MENTION REPAIRS NEEDED FOR OTHER AREAS OF THE VEHICLE WORN AND DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF SUCH AGGRESSIVELY UNSAFE SHAKING. THIS IS NOT STANDARD WEAR AND TEAR, BUT A SERIOUS, DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AND CORRECTED BY NHTSA, THE CENTER FOR AUTO SAFETY, LAWYERS, AND COURTS.

NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE AS WELL AS THE INTERNET FOR THE SAME ISSUE. WHEN WILL THIS BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED?

WHILE DRIVING NORTH ON BERTRAND DRIVE NEAR WEST CONGRESS STREET IN LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA, AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES PER HOUR, THE FRONT WHEELS AND STEERING WHEEL BEGAN WOBBLING VIOLENTLY. I MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHILE SLOWLY DRIVING INTO A PARKING LOT. I PERFORMED A CURSORY INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE, BUT DID NOT OBSERVE ANYTHING WRONG. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, AND LEARNED THAT THE "DEATH WOBBLE" HAD RESULTED IN CHRYSLER ISSUING TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS, BUT NOT A RECALL. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND TO CHRYSLER. CHRYSLER INFORMED ME THAT BECAUSE A RECALL HAD NOT BEEN ISSUED, CHRYSLER WOULD NOT HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT NO EXPENSE TO ME.

LET ME MENTION, THAT I BOUGHT THIS JEEP BRAND NEW, AND STARTED HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS ABOUT 4 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE. IT WOULD PULL TO THE DRIVERS SIDE, AND WHEN HITTING UNEVEN PAYMENT OR BUMP, FELT AS THOUGH STEERING WHEEL PULLED OUT OF MY HANDS. LEARNED EARLY ON TO HOLD STEERING WHEEL VERY TIGHTLY. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD MY TIRES NEEDED ROTATION AND SET AIR PRESSURE. MILEAGE AT THIS POINT WAS 4734. OVER TIME, LEARNED TO AVOID POTHOLES, UNEVEN PAYMENT OR ANY ROUGH ROAD. WHEN I DID TAKE IT IN TO DEALERSHIP, WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT IMITATE MY PROBLEM. STILL MAKING MONTHLY PAYMENTS ON THE JEEP WITH THIS CONTINUOUS PROBLEM WAS GETTING REALLY OLD. ON 11/25/11, 2 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS OF PUTTING UP WITH THIS CRAP, TOOK IT INTO DEALERSHIP AGAIN. THE STEERING WAS GETTING MORE OUT OF CONTROL AND I WOULD NOT ALLOW MY TEENAGE SON TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE I DIDN'T FEEL SAFE. AT THIS POINT WAS TOLD NEEDED TIRES ROTATED AGAIN, AIR PRESSURE CHECK, REAR DISC BRAKES AND ROTORS NEEDED, ALSO WAS TOLD NEEDED FRONT AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL FLUID SERVICE. HAD TO DECLINE, CAUSE AT THIS POINT, TOTAL WAS ALREADY UP TO 325.63. THEY WANTED ANOTHER 195.00 TO DO IT. ON 6/4/14, DURING INSPECTION, WAS TOLD I NEED NEW TIRES. MILEAGE WAS 26,753. HAD ENOUGH TREAD TO PASS. THEY WANTED 1017.00, WENT TO COSTCO, SAME TIRES FOR 300 LESS. 2/21/14, MORE STEERING PROBLEMS, THIS TIME NEEDED NEW DAMPER, STEERING DAMPER WEAK PLUS TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER LINES NEEDED REPLACED. 6/14/14 STEERING/SUSPENSION EXHAUST HEAT SHIELD SEPARATED ON RIGHT SIDE HITTING OFF MUFFLER, ALSO FRONT AND REAR DIFF. SERVICE. COST 568.42, 8/14/14 BATTERY DIED. GETTING TO POINT, ON 9/12/14, ON PA I 79 TURNPIKE, HAD MY FIRST OFFICIAL DEATH WOBBLE AS I HAVE HEARD. I'M HESITANT TO TAKE IT IN FOR REPAIRS AGAIN BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND I DON''T HAVE THE MONEY TO KEEP MAKING REPAIRS FOR AN UNKNOWN PROBLEM. THE ONLY WAY TO RE-GAIN CONTROL IS TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY AND PULL OVER OR COME TO A COMPLETE STOP (WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT ON THE HIGHWAY). THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE DEFECT RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000.

THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE STEERING DAMPENER AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE IT. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE PART, EVEN THOUGH I HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM THEM. THE "DEATH WOBBLE" APPEARS TO BE BROUGHT ON BY THE JEEP TIRES HITTING A POT HOLE, RAILROAD CROSSING, OR OTHER ROUGH SPOTS IN THE ROAD AT A SLIGHT ANGLE. USUALLY AROUND 35+ MPH. FASTER SPEEDS, SUCH AS HIGHWAY (55-75) DO NOT SEEM TO CREATE THE ISSUE BUT ACCELERATING TO ENTER A HIGHWAY DOES, AND HAS IN MY CASE AS YOU PASS BETWEEN 30-40MPH. TO RECOVER THE DRIVER AGGRESSIVELY APPLY THE BRAKES (WITHOUT WARNING TO THOSE BEHIND THEM) AS THE WOBBLE SEVERITY INCREASES QUICKLY. THIS CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD TO BE RELEASED IN ORDER FOR THE CONTACT TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE FAILURE. THE FRONT SUSPENSION BUSHING WAS REPLACED. ALSO, THE CONTACT HAD AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC PERFORM A FRONT END ALIGNMENT HOWEVER, THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH ON A SLIGHT TURNING RADIUS, THE RIGHT FRONT STARTED TO VIBRATE, THEN IT WENT TO THE LEFT SIDE, BACK TO THE LEFT SIDE,BACK AND FORTH. EACH TIME IT TRANSFERRED, IT INCREASED.THE SEVERITY OF THE WOBBLE EFFECT. I HAD TO PUT A "DEATH GRIP" ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WHILE CROSSING 2 LANES OF ON COMING TRAFFIC IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY THE ABS, ESP AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON AND WOULD NOT LET ME PUSH THE GAS ALONG WITH THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE "LOCKING UP". MY WIFE HAD JUST TAKEN OUR 2009 JEEP WRANGLER TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, WHICH INCLUDED AN OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. ON HER WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP THE VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING DRAMATICALLY SO SHE PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND CALLED ME. I TOLD HER THAT IF THE TIRES WERE REBALANCED THEN A WEIGHT MIGHT HAVE FALLEN OFF CAUSING ONE OF THE TIRES TO BE OUT OF BALANCE AND TOLD HER TO TRY AND DRIVE IT HOME AT A SLOW SPEED. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE HOME AND THE SHAKING DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. A COUPLE DAYS LATER SHE TOOK THE JEEP BACK TO THE DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO RECHECK THE TIRE BALANCING. THEY INDICATED THAT ONE OF THE TIRES WAS OUT OF BALANCE SO THEY FIXED IT AND WE THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. A COUPLE WEEKS LATER I WAS DRIVING THE JEEP AT ABOUT 55MPH WHEN WE HIT A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD AND IT STARTED A RATHER VIOLENT SHAKING AND WOBBLING IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. I HAD TO SLOW DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DROVE THE VEHICLE BUT SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO GET IT TO DUPLICATE THE SHAKING AND THEY INDICATED THAT THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVE SHAFT. I STARTED DRIVING THE VEHICLE MORE OFTEN IN ORDER TO TAKE NOTE OF ALL THE CONDITIONS PRESENT WHEN THE SHAKING OCCURS AND TO TRY TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. I WAS SURPRISED WHEN I STARTED TO RESEARCH IT ON THE INTERNET AND IMMEDIATELY FOUND SEVERAL WEBSITES DISCUSSING A CONDITION REFERRED TO AS A "DEATH WOBBLE". THE SYMPTONS DESCRIBED ARE PRECISELY WHAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCED. THERE IS A VIOLENT SHAKING AND WOBBLING OF THE VEHICLE AND YOU HAVE TO SLOW DOWN IMMEDIATELY TO REGAIN CONTROL. OUR JEEP IS STOCK AND NO AFTER-MARKET MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY.
