Component or System: Driver’s sun visor assembly (hinge/mounting bracket near top left of windshield). Description of the Problem: While driving, the driver’s sun visor became loose at the hinge where it connects to the plastic mounting near the top left corner of the windshield. The visor then detached completely and was left hanging by the electrical cord, obstructing my forward view and creating an immediate safety hazard. Safety Risk: The detached visor blocked my line of sight while driving and could easily cause a collision if it occurs at highway speeds or in traffic. Additionally, with the bracket broken, the visor can no longer be used to block sunlight, increasing the risk of glare and impaired visibility during sunrise or sunset. Inspection and Confirmation: The issue was verified by a Jeep dealership; however, they stated that there was no permanent repair available other than visor replacement. This occurred several years ago while the jeep was still under warranty. Availability for Inspection: The defective visor is available for inspection upon request. Reproduction of the Problem: Based on multiple online reports and discussions found on Google and Reddit, this appears to be a common occurrence among Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles, specifically involving the driver’s sun visor detaching or becoming loose at the hinge. There are multiple videos/pictures of people complaining and asking how to fix the loose/broken clips for visors. Something more reliable that the OEM as it keeps malfunctioning. Warning Lamps or Messages: No warning lamps or messages were displayed prior to the failure. The visor detached suddenly without any indication.

The instrument cluster has went completely out. There is a currently open recall for 2018 - 2024 Jeep Wranglers (Recall #24V-652), but my VIN is not included. According to FMVSS No. 571.101 (Controls and Displays), you are required to remedy this situation as it is now a safety and hazard for the driver.

While driving the drivers side sun visor just fell down from the pivot point blocking my vision while in heavy traffic. The Passenger side had done the same thing a few months prior. From looking at the Jeep forums, You tube and Amazon and Ebay it is a common problem on the Jeep Wrangler JL product line. I had to purchase a clip or aftermarket bracket to hold the close to 200 dollar sun visor from falling out. These brackets are rather cheap and inexpensive. This is so common and is a Huge Safety risk. The problem is that the pivot part that mounts the visor into the roof clamp or holding piece is of cheap thin plastic that breaks easily. The other small part that holds it in fails often as well. It is so common that the amount of Vendors on Amazon and Ebay that offer a cheap part to hold it up is huge. Having something that falls into your vision is totally unacceptable and needs to be addressed ASAP/ Thank you for your help!

While driving at highway speed needed to use the visor as my vision was lost rounding a curve into direct sunlight. Upon pulling visor down it detached from mount (now another total distraction as it was hanging while driving in highway traffic.) Very dangerous! When I researched I found many that have had the same issue.

1. Transmission lags about 2 to 3 secs when trying to accelerate from a stop, or almost complete stop. This happens often. 2. Both sun visors just fall down when driving down the road. Design is poor. They are only attached by an internal cable. This happens often.

The sun visors break off and fall down, obscuring view of the road ahead. This happened on both sides after two years of ownership, was replaced under warranty, then broke apart two years later out of warranty. The dealership demands hundreds of dollars to fix PER visor. For the exorbitant price for a part that shouldn’t even wear out like that (or that quickly), the only alternative is to buy third party brackets to secure the visors instead. These brackets are not made or offered in any way by Jeep or Mopar. Broken visors on 2018-2024 models are a well-known and very common problem according to Jeep’s own service technicians and hundreds of other Jeep owners online. Jeep/Stellantis should be forced to issue a recall on the visors / install for free the necessary securing brackets and offer full refunds to any customers who already paid out of pocket to get their visors replaced at the dealership. The part/design itself is faulty and having them replaced without the addition of extra securing brackets only guarantees that they will break again in the future. Having the sun visor suddenly fall / hit you / dangle in front of your face while driving is an absolute safety hazard and it’s shocking that nothing has been proactively done by Jeep to address this concern.

Dec 12, 2024

Both the driver side and passenger side sun visors became disconnected from the jeep making it impossible for it to be folded up or placed into position. I had to purchase aftermarket adaptors to fix this problem.

The driver-side visor in my 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL which has been repaired previously, continues to fall out of its bracket. This presents a significant safety risk while driving in bright conditions when the visor is unavailable to block/screen sunlight.

We have had this jeep for a couple of years and it has less than 30k miles on it. Initially, the visor on the passenger side would drop out and just hang. This happened pretty much after we got it but just thought this was a feature of the jeep modularity so we would just push it back in. Now this started happening on driver side and I see this as a safety issue as this can obscure vision at the wrong time. I went to dealer/manufacturer(Jeep) and they do not see this as a defect worthy of replacing outside of their standard 3 year warranty. I had purchased an extended warranty from the dealer from Mastertech and they would not cover it either. This issue appears to be common defect in manufacturing design over several years over several lines of Jeep versions and I am shocked that something like this that could theoretically impair line of site for the driver while driving has not been addressed by Jeep. I am equally shocked that NHTSA has not pursued and or forced a safety recall for this. I have never had a car drop its visor and with this jeep both visors do this for a vehicle that gets very little use(under 30k miles).

Visors are not able to be used due to breaking—this happened within 2 years of purchasing the vehicle and there are forums of over 22 pages dedicated to this issue. I was driving, and the visit just fell from the roof, plastic piece holding it broke, it just dangles from a wire. Cannot see while driving into sun and I am unable to use my visors as a result. Extremely dangerous

Sun visor just fell off the hinge as I attempted to lower it.

Jan 20, 2024

Rear Defroster failed and not covered under warranty even though the problem started while the car was under warranty. Their "fix" was to glue it back on but that didn't fix it. Now my car is out of warranty they won't fix it even though I have extended warranty from them that state that it covers electric window defoggers.

The sun visor at the attachment arm has broken twice now. When you go to move the visor while driving to block the sun which is impacting your vision, you now have a visor attachment break and visor is dangling by the wires in front of your face blocking your view and you get stunned that something has broken. There is no warning at all that is about to break. You have to immediately pull over and see if you can push it back up and get it to stay so you can have an unobstructed view. I search the web and there are many many many reports of this exact issue. The Jeep dealer fixed my visor so I thought I was good. Nope. It broke a second time 1 year later. This is going to be an ongoing potential safety issue if Jeep doesn’t fix the issue. I am concerned that I could wind up in an accident when this occurs.

Jul 26, 2023

The driver's side sun visor has broken at the attachment point to the frame of the vehicle, causing it to spontaneously swing out of place and obstructing the view of the roadway. There was no excessive force applied to this part, and there are numerous reports of this online from hundreds of other vehicle owners. Obstruction of the driver's view of the road could lead to a fatal accident, especially given that the obstruction can be sudden and without warning. The component has not been inspected since the defect occurred. There are no relevant warning lamps, or messages.

Feb 21, 2023

Sun visor broke at the point where it attaches to the roof pillar causing the visor to fall in front of my face and block my vision while driving at highway speed.

Dec 10, 2022

Drivers side sun visor fell from hinge and is hanging by electrical cords. Sun visor spontaneously and repetitively smacks driver every time it drops back out of mount. Resulting in an obstruction of drivers field of view when operating vehicle. Tried to make a service appointment with several local dealerships but all advised of this issue not being a recall therefore not knowing of such problem. There are several incidents documented online in forums by other owners of the same sun visor equipment malfunctioning but no address of such issue by manufacturer. Dealerships seem to handle this issue on a case by case basis. However, sometimes the dealerships are replacing the faulty sun visor with the same faulty sun visor assembly and components - recycling the issue again as a quick fix.

One side of the The visor on the drivers side continues to fall out. Seems it’s a compression based design.

Oct 18, 2022

Both drivers and passenger side sun visors have fallen off at the hinge with minimal use. Vehicle is under 60k miles and bought new.

Oct 4, 2022

Both of the sun visors became loose and the driver side in particular will dangle down in front of windshield, blocking vision. This is a common defect on Wrangler JL/Gladiators that is the result of a design flaw in the retaining mechanism. This can happen without notice and while driving at any speed. For me it happened on interstate that the visor fell down, blocking my view.

Sep 15, 2022

My driver's side sun visor does not stay in place while driving and pops out of its holder, even if the visor is folded up out of the way and not being used. When the visor pops out of place, it hangs by the wires for visor mirror lighting. I purchased my vehicle new Feb 2020, and my vehicle currently only has about 10,500 miles. The visor began popping out of place around April/May 2022. The visor popping out of place is dangerous because 1) it happens WHILE driving, especially over rough roads, and this obscures my view of the road (!!!), 2) it has happened multiple times, unpredictably, and 3) I cannot use the visor to block out bright light while driving because it falls out if I fold down the visor, which makes it difficult to drive comfortably around sunrise or sunset. On August 15th, 2022 went to the dealer where I purchased the vehicle (Autonation Jeep Bellevue in Washington state) to get this problem looked at as my vehicle is still under warranty. The service center confirmed the problem, as mentioned in the invoice, and they mentioned they would have to replace the entire sun visor assembly. However, I have not heard back from the dealer concerning replacement as likely the parts are on back order. The pictures I provided are for the visor popped out showing the visor popped out of place when it was supposed to be in the folded up, out of the way position, and the folded down position as well as the hinge that seems to pop out of place. According to different forums of owners of Wrangler JL like mine, visors popping out of place are frequent problems, and replacing the visor with the same visor assembly only temporarily fixes the problem because replacement does nothing about the bad design that leads to the visor falling out of place.

I was driving during the night and suddenly the driver sun visor fell apart I was driving on the freeway the windshield on jeeps is little plus the visor on the way was kind of dangerous I had to hold it whit my hand to be able to make it home now I'm just wondering if the dealer is going to cover the repair costs and put something better on place it really is a safety issue that needs to be fixed some how

Sun visor - While driving on the interstate, the sun visor detached from the attachment point and obstructed my vision. I pushed the shaft back up and wedged it to get home. I will take it to the dealership to have the sun visor replaced.

Jun 2, 2022

Drivers side visor fell from mount and dangled by wires in front of me while driving. I needed to hold the visor with my left hand while steering with the right until I could come to a safe stop. Not ideal when the sun is in shining into my eyes. I was able to jam the visor back in but it will fall out if I move it too much, so I dont use it. The dealer said they had never heard of it and wants me to leave it with them but that is very inconvenient and I dont expect them to fix it under warranty. The internet has many accounts of this happening and DIY modifications to fix it.

Feb 21, 2022

Driving on I-35 North (Texas) in the morning requires driving directly into the sun rise. I utilize my sun visor daily in order to maintain a safe view of the road, where people are frequently driving over 80 miles per hour. One morning on the way to work, I put my sun visor down so that I could see past the sun glare on my windshield. The sun visor then fell from its open position as I went over a bump in the road. At this point, the visor was hanging several inches lower than it normally does, almost completely obscuring my view of the road. The visor was not able to fall completely, because it was attached to the top of the car via electrical wiring. If it had fallen completely, I would have been in a much safer position. I needed to pull over ASAP but was unable to do so due to the construction on the highway and therefore had to hold the visor up with one hand while driving with the other until I could find a safe place to stop. The visor is still in the same state as it was when it initially failed. I have had to tape it up and am therefore unable to use it at all. There is no replacement part for the failed piece of plastic within the visor's housing. It requires replacement of the entire assembly, and that will contain the same part that failed in the first place. This seems to be a fairly common problem and has been discussed at length online, including at this website: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/sun-visor-fix.44865/

Jan 12, 2022

Windshield cracked in cold with defroster on from top of windshield down between steering wheel and rear view mirror. Upon research this is a common problem in the cold and could cause visibility issues in cold weather states.

Nov 23, 2021

I was driving down the interstate and the sun visor fell and obstructed my view. I had to manipulate it back to the clip to get it to stay out of my way, all while driving at high speeds and in traffic. Doing an online search I see where the visor is defective in many of these vehicles. Luckily I wasn't involved in an accident, but the potential was there as the visor broke and dangled in my view of the road at Interstate speeds. I found this image and mine looks the same. https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/attachments/20190914_175938-jpg.228307/

THE FRONT WINDOW DEFROSTER ONLY BLOWS AIR ONTO THE WINDSHIELD IN MIDDLE AND MOST OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. I GET NO AIR FLOW TO DRIVER SIDE. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER AND THEY CHECKED 3 OTHERS ON THEIR LOT AND THEY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.

SUN VISOR ATTACH PIVOT POINT BROKE. PASSENGER SIDE IN OCTOBER AND THE DRIVERS SIDE 0N 03/29/2021. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WILL HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN. VERY BAD DESIGN. IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS DRIVING INTO THE SUN AND I LOWERED MY VISOR AND THEN THE PLASTIC SHAFT BROKE.

Mileage: 4,500

Feb 13, 2021

THE WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER DOESN'T REACH THE OUTER PORTIONS OF THE WINDSHIELD WHICH RESULTS IN DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS IN COLD WEATHER. I HAVE TO TURN THE HEAT ALL THE WAY ON HIGH AND THE FAN ALL THE WAY UP TO THE POINT WHERE IT IS HURTING MY EYES AND IT STILL DOESN'T PREVENT ICE ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES. I HAVE TO LEAN TO THE RIGHT TO SEE THROUGH MY WINDSHIELD. THIS HAPPENS WHILE SITTING STILL, DRIVING, ETC. IT HAPPENS ANYTIME THE WEATHER IS BELOW FREEZING AND THERE ARE WET CONDITIONS

Mileage: 1

Dec 28, 2020

FRONT WINDSHIELD FAILS TO DEFROST DURING COLD DRIVING CONDITIONS, ALLOWING SNOW/ICE TO BUILD UP, DIRECTLY IMPACTING THE DRIVER'S ABILITY TO SEE CLEARLY OUT THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, BUT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHEN PARKED WAITING TO TRY AND DEFROST SO I COULD SEE CLEARLY OUT OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. DEFROSTER, ON HIGH FULL HEAT DOES NOT REACH THE LEFT AND RIGHT PORTIONS OF THE WINDSHIELD.

Mileage: 5,500

Dec 27, 2020

WHILE THE JEEP HAS DEFROST VENTS ACROSS THE WHOLE WINDSHIELD, IT ONLY BLOWS HOT AIR FROM THE CENTER, LEANING THE SIDES OF THE WINDSHIELD TO COLLECT SNOW AND ICE, EVEN WITH DEFROST ON ITS HIGHEST SETTING.
