Kia Sorento Years to Avoid
The 2011 Sorento is the worst model year, plagued by the same Theta II engine problems that affected the Hyundai Sonata, with connecting rod bearing failures causing sudden engine seizure. The 2012-2015 models continued these engine issues with the 2.4L 4-cylinder. The 2016-2018 Sorentos improved but still had occasional engine complaints. The 2003-2006 first-generation Sorentos had transmission issues and excessive rust in northern climates. Avoid any 2011-2015 Sorento with the 2.4L engine unless you can verify engine replacement.
Best Kia Sorento Years
The 2010 Sorento represents the peak of the second generation before engine problems emerged. The 2019-2022 Sorentos show Kia has addressed engine issues with improved designs. The 2007-2009 models offer good value with proven drivetrains before the problematic redesign.
