The vehicle is a 2016 Kia Sorento equipped with a 2.0L Turbo Theta II engine subject to the KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) safety recall. The original engine was replaced at approximately 70,000 miles under Kia’s engine service program. The replacement engine currently has approximately 32,000 miles. The vehicle developed internal engine damage diagnosed by a Kia dealership as a burnt exhaust valve. A burnt exhaust valve indicates abnormal combustion conditions such as lean operation, pre-ignition, detonation, timing deviation, injector malfunction, or lubrication failure. These are conditions the KSDS recall was intended to detect and mitigate. Kia Consumer Affairs denied warranty coverage, stating that the extended warranty applies only to rod bearing failure and that no further escalation would be pursued. Kia Consumer Affairs declined to escalate the matter for District Parts & Service Manager review and directed the owner back to the dealership. During the prior engine replacement, the dipstick was observed to be glued in place, raising concerns regarding oil level accuracy and lubrication integrity on the replacement engine. This complaint is submitted due to concern that a KSDS safety recall-related engine failure involving abnormal combustion was not properly reviewed or escalated, and that recall procedures were not administered in accordance with their intent.
The safety hazard began with a pattern of ignored warnings by the authorized dealer network. On Aug 15, 2025, I brought the vehicle to Luther Kia of Bloomington for a Check Engine Light. The dealer simply cleared the code without diagnosis, failing to catch early signs of engine trouble. On Sept 22, 2025, the engine failed again. I drove the vehicle in unsafe "limp mode" to Luther Nissan Kia [XXX] ). They found the engine was "4 quarts low on oil" (severe starvation just 37 days after a dealer oil change). Despite this catastrophic finding, they failed to diagnose the root cause and released the unsafe vehicle to me after selling only a spark plug replacement. On Sept 26, when I attempted to pick up the vehicle, the Check Engine Light was flashing immediately at handover. I refused to take the unsafe vehicle. The dealer then replaced an Oil Control Valve (OCV) and released the vehicle to me again later that day. After this second "repair," I drove the vehicle for only a few miles before the engine failed again with a Check Engine Light. The dealer has since admitted in writing (BBB complaint #XXX) that the engine was "deprived of lubrication" due to the initial low oil condition. By ignoring early warnings and releasing a vehicle with a dying engine twice, the dealer put me and other motorists at risk of a sudden loss of power at highway speeds. My 2016 Kia Sorento SX AWD shows a noticeable delay in the powertrain when shifting from Park into first gear. The car hesitates before moving, which affects drivability and feels like a transmission lag. I consider this a safety issue because the delay could cause the car to stall unexpectedly. I’m especially worried about driving with my children or merging onto highways, where a stall or hesitation could lead to loss of control and increase the risk of an accident.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at 15 MPH, she attempted to park the vehicle in her driveway. As the contact tapped on the brake pedal, the vehicle independently accelerated as the contact slammed on the brake pedal and steered the vehicle out of the way of her home. The contact ran over a gutter and a bird feeder before applying the emergency brake, which stopped the vehicle. The contact was uncertain if any warning lights had appeared on the instrument panel prior to the failure. The contact was not injured, the air bags did not deploy, and a police report was not filed. The next day, the contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The contact was informed that rust was discovered on the vehicle's brake rotors; however, they had yet to determine the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the engine had been replaced almost a month prior to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.

My 2016 Kia Sorento (VIN: [XXX] ) has suffered a head gasket failure due to a known manufacturing defect identified in a Kia Technical Service Bulletin (TSB WTY035). The defect causes head gasket failure, which in my case has resulted in external oil leakage. While Kia issued a TSB acknowledging this defect, they are denying warranty repair on a technicality — stating that the failure must involve coolant entering the combustion chamber to qualify, despite acknowledging the underlying part defect. The vehicle’s engine is losing oil through the failed gasket, and the issue poses increasing risk of engine damage or sudden performance loss. Kia’s denial is inconsistent with the intent of the warranty and the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This problem affects vehicle function and reliability. It is also being experienced by other owners of the same model and engine. I am filing this complaint so NHTSA is aware of this known defect and the manufacturer's refusal to take accountability unless the failure meets arbitrarily narrow criteria. Put vehicle in park while waiting at a gas station. It won't come out of park. Managed to get it to the pump, and used a screwdriver to bypass the shift lock control, and was able to drive home. With the bypass enabled, it puts my family at risk while driving. The car can shift without the brake being applied. I looked this problem up and it is extremely common with Kia Sorento (the BCM fails, and it's not an affordable fix).
The shift interlock system stopped allowing the car to come out of park however the vehicle would still roll when in Park, have to do a manual override to take it out of park but it will hesitate on the highway. I have had too many near miss accidents with this vehicle. Especially due to my break lights working intermittently although they've been replaced. I'm not sure if it's electrical (my locks would randomly lock and unlock) or due to the shifting gear.
Shifts hard at first crank up.
The engine failed while driving. The dealer noted in case details they observed excessive scoring on the cylinder wall and damage to the piston ring, as well as a significant reduction in compression. Despite these findings the dealer and manufacturer said the repair "would not be covered under the PI campaign for engine failure" and "was not related to an engine rod bearing failure." Note that the dealer did not inspect the rod bearings. Worn or damaged connecting rod bearings can significantly reduce compression by allowing excessive piston movement and causing a leak in the combustion chamber. Moreover, excessive scoring on the cylinder wall indicates that the metal from failing connecting rod bearings has been scraping against the cylinder wall, leaving deep scratches and grooves, likely due to excessive wear on the bearings, causing significant damage to the piston and cylinder assembly. This model vehicle should have been included in the recall concerning connecting rod bearings that affected other Kia model vehicles.
We experienced a large oil leak from the vehicle. Towing it to the dealer, we are told the oil feed pipe to the turbo charger part number 282402gta1 has failed spewing oil out of the turbo area. There are many recalls for similar parts on other Kia / Hyundai Models with 2.0T and 3.3 engine models. The dealer is telling me this is not covered by KIA. This is a safety concern of oil spewing from the engine which can get on hot exhaust components as well as burning from the engine compartment. My vehicle is currently at the dealership waiting to escalate the concern.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V612000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the shift lever was easily moved without the brake pedal being depressed. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was rescheduled several times. The contact stated that once the parts were available, the dealer informed the contact that there would be a charge to replace the shifter assembly, even though the VIN was included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and assisted the contact with scheduling an appointment with another dealer. The failure mileage was 134,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that after shifting the vehicle into park(P), the gear shifter would fail to shift out of the park(P) position. The contact would be forced to use a screwdriver to open the shift lock release button in an effort to shift gears. The contact also mentioned that the check engine had appeared on the instrument panel. The contact used a code reader that determined that the transmission range sensor circuit was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 162,747.

While sitting in park the parking shift level assembly was bumped by a hand bag by someone getting in the vehicle car shifted out of park into reverse and began to roll backwards while the person was still getting in the car. At the time the driver did not have any foot on the brake Or accelerator. Further discovery show that the car could be shifted out of any gear Including park at any time without applying the brake.
Unknown component or system failed. My car suddenly stalled while on the highway, not allowing me to increase speed (over 40 mpg) and then stopped. I was scared to death when that happened on the highway as we could have been hit by other vehicles. I was able to restart it but it kept doing it, gradually reducing my speed to 20mpg then a lamp warning sign appeared. The car only has 50,000 miles on it and no warning light or prior failure before this happened on 11/29/2024. I took it to Kia for inspection and they told me if the engine will have to be replaced, it will take 3 months. They took my car in for inspection and I am now 10 days without a car and I have not yet heard from Kia.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the transmission was slipping, the engine was consuming an excessive amount of oil, the vehicle lost motive power before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The contact stated that the engine had recently been replaced due to the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 108,000.

I had a catastrophic engine failure on the interstate right before rush hour traffic WITHOUT ANY warning. I was driving on [XXX] and heard a noise (sounded like something fell). Steering was a little wobbly then seemed ok for about 1min. Went to accelerate and could hear engine trying but could not accelerate. Shortly after the check engine light was flashing, oil light and battery light was on. I lost power. Thankfully I had started to move over to the farthest right lane and was able to get over to side of road before car stopped. This was around 2:50pm on a Tues right before Chicago rush hour traffic. Had to tow car to my mechanic who said a rod blew through engine and there is a piston in the oil pan. My mechanic recommended I have it towed to dealership for engine warranty. It's currently at Castle Kia in McHenry IL. They agreed a rod went through engine and there is a piston in the oil pan. Now dealership wants me to pay $1500 for diagnostics and to tear down the engine to see if it qualifies for an engine replacement. (said I wouldn't have to pay if under warranty, but they claim they can't determine unless engine is broken down). It was at my mechanic 1 week prior for an oil change. I was pulled over by the state police. He said I had a few lights out including a brake light out. I got out to check. This was correct. I had just had my vehicle inspected so i was surprised. I went to leave I couldn't put it in gear at all. I had to over ride the shifter and use a pen to push in the tow button everytime I want to use my vehicle. I have to check my lights and make sure no bulbs are blown out again. This is a $1200 fix. It's recalled on certain 2016 kia sorentos but not on all of them when it is happening to all of us. Also I went to open my rear hatch and that to is now not opening at all. So that is also not a recall. I have a back hatch that won't open and i have to climb through my back seats and open it from the lever in the door frame and the shifter doesn't work. Please help us!! We need these recalls! If there is an accident it would be nice to open the back up from the key to grab things and run. Or to shift fast and hurry to get away from a robber. Or to just have my vehicle back again and stop doing this when there are recalls for vehicles south different Vin numbers but not mine so i have to pay so some one else can get it for free that's not fair kia corporate
driving @ nite on[XXX] [XXX] doing 70mph on cruise control all of a sudden my 2016 kia sorento loss power! then the instrument cluster lit up like a x-mas tree. check oil, check engine, and everything else in between was blinking on and off. very lucky there was an exit ramp up ahead and no vehicles on the right lane. safely got off the freeway and parked on the side of the road. very fortunate it was late nite because the area is usually busy during the day and vehicles usually be going 10 to 20+ above the 70 speed limit and my whole family was with. we waited about 10 min. to see if the vehicle would start back- up but no luck. called for a tow truck and a family friend came and pick up the wife and kids. kia service guy @ the dealership says the engine ceased and is waiting to here from kia hq. I purchased a used 2016 Kia Sorento during the used vehicle rise in pricing back in 2021. I owned a 2012 Hyundai sonata (which also required an engine replacement), but I my grandmother's car died, and I needed a better vehicle for a new job. June 16th I was driving with my daughter at around 9am and suddenly the vehicle started to shake and loss of power with the radio system beeping all dash lights flashing "engine system component" and check engine light remained on. (very similar to how my sonata died before engine replacement). I pulled over got the vehicle towed to my house due to it being a weekend and unable to reach a shop. I have a code reader, which I read the codes. Upon getting it to the dealer they said it was the Cam Shaft Phaser and new spark plugs, costing about $4800. As a single mother and one income I need a vehicle to survive (and still owing over $6,000) and pay my bills. Now here I am September 15, and I get an "engine system component" and check engine light back on. Now I have read so many similar issues on Kia blogs and nothing is being done to fix these issue and I am stuck with a vehicle that I still owe money on and overpaid because of COVID, and continues to break down. I'm disgusted with Kia as they could care less.
My SUV is having all of the problems associated with a bad engine. This started a week ago and on Thursday, [XXX] my SUV completely stopped running and I had to get it towed to my residence. I had an ASE certified mechanic to check it out and he said your engine is BAD. I have had all of my required oil changes as well as servicing as recommended. I got this SUV in 2020. It has a little over 100,000 miles. I cannot afford a engine repair at this time. Please advice. The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the vehicle failed to shift into an intended gear, and was stuck in park(P). The contact placed a screwdriver in the shifter to manually shift into the intended gear to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.

The problem started after a quick stop at a convenient store on the way to work. After starting the engine the vehicle would not shift from park. I was able to bypass this after a quick Internet search by removing a small cover near the stick shut and a small straw to bypass the shift control. I've had the car twice at the mechanics without a diagnosis as to a possible cause and was able to have the mechanic permanently disabled the shift lock but was warned the vehicle could be shifted to drive or neutral at any time and moved with a key. About a month later I found myself without headlights and shortly after this without wiper controls. Another visit to my mechanic would this time show the problems, shift lock, headlights and wipers were all from a faulty PCM. My mechanic has shipped my PCM out twice for repair but both time only caused the replacement part to blow. It's not suggested they use the dealer to further repair the problem. I've been 3 weeks without my vehicle and it's another week before the earliest availability from my local dealer. I'm only hoping now it's not a long backorder to gets the parts necessary to fix my vehicle. I have also read this has been a common problem and costly repair with other 2016 Kia Sorento owners.
The button on the gear shift will not push in to move the shifter out of park.
Car will not shift, I have to manually release it. It just started happening very randomly. I constantly have to release it with a screw driver.
The transmission shift lever locked up. The car could not be started. It is available for inspection. This caused the owner not to be able to start the vehicle and be stranded in a parking lot, unable to drive home. A tow truck was called and the vehicle is currently at a service station, where it was inspected and the problem was diagnosed. As a result, the owner has rented a car, due to a three business day wait period for the replacement part. There were no warning lights or indications prior to the problem! This event has caused the owner much undo stress, and over $1200 in expenses. Also, because the owners live out of state, and needed to head back home (NY), they now have to travel back again to the State of MASS in order to pick up their vehicle. This constituted a minimum of a one week car rental. The closest dealership is over an hour away from where the vehicle broke down and is very costly to have it towed there.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start, prompting her to contact AAA for roadside assistance. Later, the AAA technician made the contact aware that the gear shifter had failed to engage. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not towed to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V612000 (Power Train) but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
Gear shift will not shift into Park and car will roll where parked depending on the incline. It also will not start unless I use the shifter bypass with a small screwdriver to shift it into neutral to start and then shift into reverse or drive.
We were driving on the [XXX] on [XXX] with a speed of around 70 miles per hour. We started to see a small amount of white smoke coming from under the hood and at the same time the truck started to slow down by itself unexpectedly and then started to jerk back and forth. No indicators showed up on the dashboard. The speed reduced quickly and hitting the gas pedal did nothing to accelerate our speed. The white smoke started to increase and it became difficult to see. We then saw the temperature gauge go all the way up to hot out of nowhere. There were vehicles all around us and the passengers in the car started to yell to try to get to the shoulder. We had to maneuver very quickly through traffic with the car continuing to jerk at a very slow speed, which was very scary and dangerous. We were finally able to slowly get over to the shoulder. We turned off the truck. When we opened the hood, white smoke was everywhere coming from the engine and the coolant in the plastic receptacle was bubbling. The coolant looked like it was about to explode and the driver got burned trying to remove the cap. There was significant heat coming from the engine. The coolant then drained out of the receptacle. When we tried to start the truck again it would not start. We spend hours trying to get a tow to a shop in NJ miles from where we live in NY. Several days later, the mechanic in NJ took a look at the car and he reported this week that the head gasket is blown and that we need a new engine. We plan to tow the truck back to NY to KIA where we have the car serviced normally to have it looked at. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My car was driving fine and then on Saturday we went to our daughters birthday party and the car started making noises and you could see white smoke coming out the back of the car. We were getting off the highway and thankfully we pulled over. We saw engine oil just spilling out. There were no warning lights beforehand. We took it to a shop and they said the oil burned a hole through the engine. I am very upset as I am still paying on the car and my only option would be to pay 5000 to have it repaired or they repossess my vehicle.
The 2016 Kia Sorento engine apparently has excessive oil usage leading to engine failure while driving on highway. Dealers are aware of the problem but Kia is not addressing the issue. Took the car in 3 times for Diagnostic check with no indication of any fault codes to address issue specifically. Now engine has failed despite our efforts to get ahead of the problem, and provide regular maintenance to our vehicle. Apparently dealers are well aware of the issue and aren't owning to it because Kia isn't supporting it.
On 12/15/23 my wife was driving her father to a dental appointment and when trying to pass a slower moving vehicle on a rural stretch of our highway system. The car died after she accelerated to pass the slower vehicle. She was in the oncoming lane of traffic when she lost engine power, power steering, power brakes and electronics. The car she was passing slowed down to allow her to get over, as a semi truck had now appeared on the horizon. Without any power, she could not complete the pass and had to force the car back into the correct lane where the car came to a stop partially in the roadway. Two vehicles behind her witnessed the issue and could tell she was having vehicle problems and helped push her, her dad, and the car to the side of the road into an orchard for safety. There were no warning symptoms, no loud sounds, nothing, just the control panel flashing intermediately after the car died. The car was towed to a local shop that thought it was possibly an electrical issue and replaced the battery (as that somehow died during the incident) but they soon identified the motor had seized and we should have it taken to a Kia dealership for a known issue with the 2.4L engines. The Kia dealership advised that a "Product Improvement Campaign", not a Safety Recall, had not been performed on the vehicle and that Kia had a class action lawsuit for this exact issue. Kia claims that postal notifications were sent to the previous owner, but had our information on file and registered as an owner through the Kia Owner web portal. Kia is refusing to cover the repair costs because the original owner never had the work completed, and as a second owner, we were never notified of the Knock Sensor Software Update that needed to ensure the car would go into limp mode before a total engine seizure. We never took the Kia to an actual dealer, as we had all maintenance done at various oil change locations, and an independent auto repair shop do the milestone services as recommended.
My vehicle has 111k miles on it and is burning so much oil I have to spend 8 thousand dollars to replace the motor. This doesn’t seem like it should be burning this much oil. Now the motor has a horrible knock on the inside of the motor. Garage says the whole motor has to be replaced.
Car when into a low power mode, could not keep it running ,took 5 times to go thru a very busy intersection and motor was making a knocking noise, smells like burnt oil-motor ,misses out..The car was towed into a KIA dealership,3 weeks later they said it was fixed, drove off and didn’t even make it a mile until it started knocking and having the same smell like burnt motor, went into a reduce power.now it’s been 3 more weeks or more and still nothing is getting resolved. Yes the dealership knows about this issue. Yes warning messages came on when it went into low power mode. This is motor number two as the motor was replaced less than 12 months ago.
17-year-old daughter driving 65 mph down the highway when engine just gave out. Loss drive power but was able to make it to the side of highway, once stopped coolant find blowing out. There was no overheating warning or light luminated on dash. Once towed to shop and inspected told head gasket blown out dur to loose head bolts & possible head crack due to lost coolant.
I was unable to to get my gear out of park. I took to Kia immediately to inspect this issue. My safety is at risk if a collision occurs because I can’t change gears or if I have my children in the car and I get stuck in a remote location. The problem is currently being inspected by a Kia dealership & no one else has been notified just yet. I was given no warning or message before this began on Nov. 7, 2023. After a thorough internet search it seems there are several KIA owners that have experienced the same problem.
My engine failed with no warning, my car shut down on the hwy. It was a safety issue because the car shut down while driving on the hwy and could have resulted in a traffic accident. This problen is all over the internet. There were no warning lights. Car ran fine up until it stalled and lost power and shut down. When towed to the repair shop, I was told it was completely out of oil, metal shavings were in the oil filter. The shop replaced oil and the car ran for a bit with knocking noise. On the way to the kia dealership, after learning this was an issue with my type of vehicle, the car shut down again and had to be towed to the dealership. My request for engine replacement was denied even though it is well within 100.000 miles and or 10yrs. It has 84,000 miles. I feel this is KIA's responsibilty to replace my engine. At this time, they are charging me $10,600 to replace my engine.

Was driving to work RPM's jumped up and stayed after releasing gas pedal. The engine started knocking. Pulled off the road at gas station near by. Shut car off. Had to have car towed to back to my house.
Total engine failure on highway with no warning. Kia dealership says a piston broke and a valve is stuck open. Total engine replacement required with a cost of $12,000. Kia refused to help with cost due to car being at 101,000 miles. Only 1,000 miles over the powertrain warranty.

My shifting lever acts all wonky. Feels lose. It acts as if it does not want to go into the gears I put it in, especially park. I have to wiggle the lever before it will lock. When I put it in reverse it takes a minute before the R comes up and then my back up camera won’t come on because I feel it’s not telling it that’s it’s in reverse. Yesterday I was driving the SUV and going down the road and all of a sudden it was like my SUV was put into to neutral going down the road, nothing touched the shifting lever but it was as if the car had no idea what gear it was in. This worries me as if someone was behind me I could have been rear ended. This is a real safety concern to me and my family. The SUV only has 60,000 miles on it. Are there any issues with this make and model? I would really hate to get into an accident.
Shift lock does not come out of park. Started September 2022. Excessive oil burning 2 quarts a month( every 500 miles) Started June 2022 Low oil light does not turn on ever Electrical issues. Locks turn on and of every time I open door. Check engine light is always on. Since I bought the car. Kia tried fixing but it didn't help. Now have engine failure.
Yesterday while driving the engine began to shake and seize, it would not accelerate above 40 mph. I was seconds from entering the hwy but pulled into quick trip where it died and had to be towed at own expense. Oil pressure sensor had been flashing on periodically when breaks were applied between regular oil changes. Vehicle was consuming 3-4 qts of oil between oil changes, which is not normal. There were no signs of any oil leaks, oil light did not remain illuminated to suggest low oil levels, nor a check engine light warning. Vehicle has less than 100,000 miles. When contacting KIA was told I would need a warranty to fix. This is not a warranty issue, this is a KNOWN issue and class action lawsuit related to these symptoms. I was seconds from a possible fatal accident on the highway and I'm sure a buy back or vehicle exchange would be better than a lawsuit involving corporate negligence resulting in a death.
automatic transmission shift lever assembly components, fuel pipe exhaust causing fumes to come through the vent area causing fire and smoke. accelerator assembly issues when driving
Vehicle is consuming an excessive amount of oil, I see this is a common issue with this make and model , even a TSB regarding this issue. Yet, dealership states it is normal. I’m sorry but I have never owned a vehicle where it is normal to have to add 4 qts of oil between oil changes. This is a serious concern for engine wear and tear. I would like to escalate this issue to seek resolution. Another issue I see is both rear window regulators failed at same time. This I believe is due to poor design and low quality parts being used. Plastic pieces are used to hold metal wire in place to raise and lower windows. This plastic easily breaks over time causing windows to fall down suddenly and potentially shatter sending glass and debris in rear passengers. Headlight switch is defective causing headlights to turn off randomly while driving and then not being able to turn back on immediately. Huge safety concern at night.
Recently, while driving on a busy multi-lane highway my 2016 Kia Sorento suddenly lost power, started shaking and slowed down causing traffic safety hazard. The engine stalled after slowing down. The car needed to be towed at my expense.my check engine light came on for my KSDS, the engine went limp mode and unable to accelerate over 50 miles and hour on the highway. My engine is blown. gasoline smell fumes came through vent causing me to have an attack car started to catch fire.
This is the second very similar incident with the engine of this vehicle. On Monday, May 29, 2023, the engine failed at a stop light in Fort Wayne Indiana. A few miles before it failed, it suddenly got very noisy and wouldn’t go over about 15 mph. It wouldn’t really react to the accelerator pedal. At the stop light it just quit at a major intersection leaving me stranded in the middle of the road. It has been towed to the Kia dealer in Fort Wayne. They have not diagnosed the problem yet but I have read many reports on line and my experience was similar: vehicular just quit, engine lost oil, accelerator pedal not responsive, and loud ticking sound. I’m afraid the repair will be thousands of dollars and I’m a senior citizen on Social Security. This is a second incident. On October 20, 2022, my daughter in law drove my car to IU Health Hospital in Indianapolis to visit me in the hospital (major surgery). In an hour and a half she used a full tank of gas and 3 quarts of oil — the car slowed to 40 mph, accelerator pedal didn’t work and she was on Route 69 a 4 lane major highway and was very scared. She pulled off at the next exit. The car had to be towed from Indianapolis to Fort Wayne. My mechanic worked on it, got it running ok but it had a major oil leak. I was recovering from my surgery so drove it little. I now find out that the engine in my car has major problems just like what I have experienced and that Kia is refusing to fix them unless people pay in excess of $6000. This is a safety issue!!!! Having the car fail and just quit while on local or interstate roads leads to accidents and injuries. This engine needs to be recalled. Kia knows it and has settled claims out of court so they don’t have to admit responsibility. This is a serious safety hazard. The recent date of May 29, 2023 is provided but the previous date this happened is October 20, 2022. So there were two incidents.
I would like to confirm if the recall for 2016 Kia Sorento Transmission Shift Level Assembly also covers all of us who have reported complaints about having to use a screw driver to engage our vehicles out of park? This is a safety concerns just as well as the cars that are impacted by the shift lever slipping out of park while engine off. using a screw driver because Kia refuses to replace the part they have acknowledged is faulty, is something that customers should not be responsible for fixing. If there was an issue identified (and clearly there was) the exact same year, make and model and part (the shift lever itself) then the investigation either needs to be expanded or Kia needs to just own that these parts need replaced in a larger span than the recall currently covers. please let me know as I am getting no assistance with these issues from my dealership - Shawnee Mission Kia in Kansas. thanks
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while pulling the gear shift lever to shift the vehicle into reverse, the lever then would not shift into drive or any other gear. The check engine warning light illuminated but turned off after a couple minutes. The contact noticed that the gear shift lever was locked and placed a screwdriver into the shifter lever lock and the contact was able to shift the lever to reverse and drive. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 190,000.

Car will not drive, sputters and will not accelerate at all. Car shakes and then loses power.
Most recently the engine burned up the oil prior to my next service date. After oil was added and the engine drove fine. The next day the engine ran fine and after driving through an intersection 1/2 mile from my house the car died. It lost complete power, putting myself and my family in danger. (Thank God we were able to get off to the side of the busy roadway safely). At that moment, a battery light came on first, then an oil and engine light illuminated at the same time. The car wouldn’t start and had to be towed off the side of the road. The mechanic that looked at it said it needed an engine. Due to lack of maintenance records, the extended warranty company chose to deny my claim. The dealer has my car and will do a diagnostic test. About a year ago I had the transmission looked at for hard shifting into first and the dealer said it needed a flush. The problem continued not too long after they flushed it. It only happens if you release the brake and push to start too quickly and put in gear too quickly. No recalls I’m being told for that issue as well. ZERO indicators on dash prior to any issues happening that would have given me the opportunity to maintenance/service my vehicle before resulting in engine failure and potentially costing my thousands I don’t have. I love my Kia and want my baby back in great working order but I’m afraid I won’t be able to have her back if the repairs are more expensive than the cars worth. I’m still financing this vehicle as well. Please KIA/Hyundai I need your grace and good faith to repair my vehicle under warranty.
My gear shift locks in place unless the shift lock release is pressed. Multiple other vehicles of this same Make and Model have a recall for this same issue but my car isn't on the list for it's vin number so the dealer wants to charge $950 for the BCM to be replaced first before then moving to the shifter and components which will total almost another $600. My sister's 2016 Kia Sorento is also experiencing the same issue. I don't understand how my vehicle has the same issue but they want to charge me to correct an issue that manufacturing causes in so many of this Make and Model. Side note: after recall for anti theft system was "fixed" my steering wheel controls for menu settings and stereo no longer work.
While daughter driving home on interstate, Sorento started losing power and slowing down, no warning lights turned on. She pulled off interstate when she noticed it was missing and cut the car off. When trying to start the vehicle again, engine light came on, but the car was missing so bad, we had it towed home. Next day had it towed to auto repair, was told it was losing compression in one and two cylinder and coming out tailpipe. The oil was checked and good and the vehicle did not have any warning lamps, even when it failed her on interstate. The vehicle never register or run hot. No lights came on until after pulled over and turned off and then on again. Had the knock sensor installed for recall when received in mail and it was updated. Vehicle has not been repaired because I can't find anyone that will work on a Kia! Making payments & Insurance on a car that cannot drive.
I was driving my Kia Sorento and the check engine light came on. Took to Autozone to scan the code. And it came back as a KNOCK SENSOR CODE. It went to LIMP MODE I couldn’t accelerare and Was so slow. And consuming oil. And the engine had a knock. Problems with the shift gear. I took it to GREENBRIER KIA DEALERSHIP IN CHESAPEAKE VIRGINIA. They told me that it just need it a software update. I told them that I hear many owners having the same issues. Now they did a diagnostic for $199 dollars. They told me it needs a new knock sensor. The total I will have to pay is close to $600 dollars. I told them if they do ROD BEARINGS TEST. They say they do. I’m just frustrated because it seems like the engine needs to be replaced. The technician told me my Kia Sorento was not on the knock sensor recall nor engine recall. I can’t drive the car and still making payments on it.
Would not shift out of park Dealership repair cost $1000 - told “not part of transmission so not under the warranty “ - now reading online and on recall site lever and linkage column shift issue but now dealership says “not the same” but reading lots of Kia owners reporting same problem? Should be a recall!!
Car started to make a knocking noise especially when accelerating , however no lights on dash indicated anything was wrong. Car started fluttering and engine died. Started the car again, more knocking and fluttering before the engine died. Pulled over and checked oil. It was low so had someone bring me oil. Put in 3.5 quarts and got the car started again. The car was still making the knocking sound but was able to drive .5 mile to the closest mechanic. They said it is a serious engine problem from the sounds of it and instructed me not to drive it but to get it towed to the dealer.
Car started to make a knocking noise, however no lights on dash indicated anything was wrong. Checked oil and the oil was low, had to add 4 quarts of oil, checked for leaks and nothing was leaking. Two weeks later noticed the car was driving a little different, checked oil and had to add two more quarts of oil.
Twice now my 2016 Kia GDI has had the same problem as many others. I had my oil changes made and they said there was no oil in the car. the oil light never came on. I am afraid to drive my car. Has there been a recall on this. or for a engine recall. My car is under warranty. Is
i was merging into traffic on the expressway and when i stepped on the gas the vehicle wouldnt accelerate and died on me, i was able to coast to the side of the expressway, the vehicle sputtered when i attemted to restart, and when i put in drive it died. once it was towed home, i was able to start it and back it up to the garage like 3 feet. but it was sputtering and shaking. this vehicle was purchased used, and the dealership replaced the headgasket approximately 3 months ago. i purchased it 4 months ago. now i'm having problems again and don't know how i'm going to fix this on going problem.
We bought our vehicle in April of 2020. In July 2020 our car broke down and Kia replaced the engine due to a recall that caused the engine to fail. We continued to get our oil changed per the recommended miles. In August of 2022, our turbo failed. We brought it into the dealership and were advised that the engine was bone dry of oil. There has been no oil leaks, nor was our oil light on. After some research we discovered despite this being a common issue with this motor that there is not a recall. Our turbo was replaced and now our entire engine of only two years old needs to be replaced again.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at less than 10 MPH, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly without warning. The contact was able to shift into neutral (N), which stopped the unintended acceleration and caused the vehicle to operate as needed. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure as the vehicle had operated as designed. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the failure reoccurred without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated unintendedly at a higher speed. The contact depressed the brake pedal and pressed the ON/OFF button, however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact then drove into a vacant parking lot and shifted into neutral (N), which stopped the acceleration. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while taking the vehicle back to the unknown dealer. Upon arriving at the dealer, the contact informed the dealer that he no longer wanted possession of the vehicle as it was unsafe to drive. The dealer provided the contact with a rental vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact sent a letter to the manufacturer informing them of the failure, but the contact had not yet received a response. The contact stated that the whereabouts of the vehicle were unknown. The failure mileage was 27,093. Manufacturer Safety Recall Campaign issued. The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, his wife was unable to shift into drive (D) as the gear shifter remained stuck in park (P). The contact's wife used a screwdriver to depress a button as instructed by an online tutorial. The contact's wife was then able to shift into drive (D) and continued driving; however, the failure reoccurred whenever the vehicle was parked. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not be repair the vehicle under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V612000 (Power Train) as the VIN was not included due to the manufacturing date of the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.

I have a 2016 Kia Sorento that was purchased Certified Pre-Owned on 5/18/2022. On 9/16/2022, I was driving the car at approximately 50 MPH when the care began to lose significant power. The car completely lost power making it hard to drive and adjust steering. I was able to safely pull over; however, being stranded in the dark as a woman is not safe, and I feel had another car been in front of or near me, I could have easily crashed. At that time, the car would not restart, and I noticed when I tried to start the car, smoke coming from under the hood. I sat for about 30 minutes, tried to start the car again, the car would not start. Prior to the car shutting down, there was no warning. The engine light has never been on in the car. What I did notice is the engine light flashed just before it went into this coasting mode. So, whatever was happening, happened without any warning at all. I had the car towed to my home. The tow driver parked the vehicle in a spot where I do not park; I noticed upon inspection oil had puddled on the ground. The car has never had or shown any previous leaks. I park in the same spot daily and have never seen a leak. Since having the car towed into the dealer, I have learned from Kia, the engine locked up; however, they have not been able to determine the cause as of yet. What they have shared with me is that they ran the diagnostic on the vehicle and confirmed that oil was everywhere (as I reported). They stated although the oil was dirty, the oil was full in the engine. They have confirmed the engine is locked but stated any claim with Kia against the Theta II Settlement Claim was denied because the KSDS had not been upgraded. When I asked how would I have known the car needed this recall because my car's VIN does not produce any recall notices on neither the KIA site nor NHTSA, I was told Honda (the Seller) should have performed the update before selling the car to me. So currently I am looking at $8K-$12K in repairs.
My 2016 Kia Sorrento is burning oil, about 1 quart every 300 miles. It only has 64,000 miles on it. We have the oil changed every 3000 miles and last time it was black and sludge like. This is not acceptable and called the dealership and they suggest paying $700 to do a carbon test. Not paying that when the car has a warranty still!!!! This issue needs to fixed!!! We have dealing with this for months!! Also the lights on dashboard flicker once in a while.
I was driving on the highway going 70 mph when my 2016 Kia Sorento 3.3L lost power and could not accelerate. I had to navigate to the side of the highway carefully and got my car towed to the closest Kia Dealership. Upon their investigation, it was a blown head gasket that required the whole engine to be replaced. I am the 2nd owner of the car and bought the car in late 2019 with 45, XXX miles on it and it currently only has 66, XXX miles. I was not covered under warranty as it expires once you pass 60,000k miles. Estimation from Kia would cost close to $10K with a new engine/labor. Contacted Kia Consumer to see if they can help and was denied. Now stuck with a dead car trying to figure out what I can do.
-I was driving my vehicle in a parking lot, stopped at the stop sign to let a car pass and hit the gas pedal and the car did not move. - My concern is what could have happened if the transmission died while I was driving. -The problem has been confirmed by the dealer that the transmission needs to be replaced. The car has less than 31,000 miles on it. I am a 2nd owner, and I only put 7,000 miles on it in 3 years but it was out of warranty. KIA even denied a Good Will replacement. - There were not any warning signs, message or symptoms. Unfortunately I have to pay 3200.00 to have it replaced and I spoke to KIA and they said that there was nothing they could do. It seems strange that a vehicle with less than 31,000 miles would have a transmission just die without any warnings.
The gear shift will not come out of park. I had to stick something in the manual brake release hole to shift out of park.
Vehicle has always been serviced through KIA service center so upon taking the vehicle into service for a sudden severe oil leak repair and to service the water pump as fluid was not circulating through the radiator, and while all the services were done they found the vehicle still over heating so they did a compression/block test and found blown head gaskets. As stated on the invoice of the service done : Vehicle Needs Engine Replacement. I paid for Labor and Parts for Services done for a total of $1539.49 and had to tow the vehicle from the KIA service center back to my residence Inoperable. It should be noted after this event I have research that the KIA 3.3L v6 engine has had this same occurrence for many KIA owners with this engine. They also have filed complaints, with no recalls from KIA on this defective engine. In all this stated above, there were no indicator lights or engine light indicating any problems with any of these situations, only my own visual inspections that noticed the sudden severe oil leak and coolant/heating problem that I brought the vehicle in for service.
Car uses oil frequently, even after I get an oil change. The oil light does not come on when oil is low. It is low before my oil changes. On 1/22/22 my check engine light is on and it says P303 with cylinder 3. Replaced the coil and the check engine light is still on. The engine is sputtering and it takes 2-3 times to start. This started all of a sudden. It is frustrating because I took it to a Kia dealership last year and told them the problem. They told me it was a recall but it was only for up to 100,000. So they only put oil in it and basically sent me my way. So there are two issues going on and It doesn't matter the mileage because several Kias are having identical issues.
I was sold a 2016 Kia Sorento, VIN# [XXX], by salesman [XXX] and [XXX] from " Ride 4U Level up auto sales located at 5599 34th street north, Saint Petersburg FL 33714. Upon Purchase, I took the car to get an oil change and have been consistent with top offs every other week at the local Jiffy Lube. On December 15, 2021, I Was on the interstate with my kids in the vehicle. Out of nowhere, no ignition warnings or alerts, Stopped. I noticed I was pushing the gas but the car wasn't accelerating. Scared beyond measure with my kids in the car ranging from ages 16 to 11 months old, I panicked but got us over to the median lane. Once the car came to a complete stop, I called a tow company. Once they arrived, they checked the car for any codes, which showed nothing. I called [XXX], and he apologized and told me to have it towed back to them and it would be looked at the next day. Kia manufacturers have serviced and said the engine blew due to the dealership not getting a recall serviced before selling me the car. I only had this vehicle up and running for three months due to Ride 4u/ Level up failure to get Manufacturer recall did before putting me in my innocent kids in a faulty vehicle that could have been demolished by a semi truck on the interstate on December 15 when it gave out on a busy highway during high traffic hours. Oil leak brakes out stopped running makes knocking noise when pushing gas pedal
The car was well maintained and oil was full but the engine started knocking over a short period and then came to a stop when switched to reverse. It can be turned off and on but the sound would continue. The gear shift and the steering would lock.
The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that the gear shifter would not shift out of PARK. The contact had to use a screwdriver to override the gear shifter. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the diagnosis was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000. The VIN was unavailable.

I was driving my vehicle up a hill. I accelerator a little. The car picked up speed then my oil light flickered and then stayed steady, along with the battery indicator. At this point my engine shut down and the car began to slow down. I came up on a side street that I turned into, because at this point the car was slowing down and loosing power and the breaks were not functioning, I would have either stalled and rolled backwards, or myself and my child would have been rear-ended. All the lights still work and everything come on, so I know its not the battery. My oil light flickered a little when I went around a turn a few times prior to this day, but never steady. No other indicator lights came on. The car is at my mechanics, who advises me the engine has seized and the vehicle has no oil. My last oil change was 3.5 months ago and according to the counter I'm only 99 miles over, which should not have caused this. Even though I was told I had up to 4,000 miles before I needed an oil change again. All of my fluids were checked at this appointment and this is the first major issue with my vehicle.
Shifter cannot be moved out of PARK without pushing down on the SHIFT LOCK RELEASE. I must do this every time I want to go forward or backward. A reliable service center informed me this is a frequent problem with the 2016 Kia Sorento and he suggested a recall may be forthcoming. Owners manual states that when using the RELEASE, depress the brake pedal so vehicles does not lurch forward or back. The additional step to move the car may be hazardous when attempting to get out of the way. Service center isolated the problem to Body Control Module which is expensive and OEM only. This happened without warning when I parked briefly in the road adjacent to a friend's driveway. I blocked the road until I discovered how to use the RELEASE button.
We had issues with the TPMS in 2020. Took it to Tempe Kia on 7/30/2020. The following was done on vehicle. 1. Installed 37110 H7A00U 2. Complete Transmission service W/BG Cleaner installed Um013, KBG3020-Cooling system kit, UM040 antifreeze/coolant, 58101 C6A00 Pad kit- Front disc b, Replaced air filter 28113 A9100 Total amount paid $1,019.96. At that time oil was checked off as green. 11/25/2020 four new tires from Costco were put on. TPMS issue came back in May of 2021 when vehicle was parked outside. We live in AZ so the temperatures get hot but when the TPMS light come on it shuts the car down where it could not go into gear until it cooled down. Moving forward to July the TPMS light stayed on and the check engine light came on and vehicle began to sputter. We took it to our mechanic and he diagnosed that we needed a new engine. There was sludge build up, knock sensor codes came up, miss fires on bank 1, and internal engine noise. We had the vehicle towed to our dealer Tempe Kia. They concurred that a new engine would be necessary. Many codes were found P0300, P0306; P0304; P0302; P0018. Had a conversation with Debby 10:00 a.m. for 55 minutes 7/20/21from Kia and was told that due to lack of maintenance on the vehicle that Kia would not cover this engine under warranty. We were told that our oil changes were out of the time frame that Kia specifies in the owners manual that the 2016 Kia Sorento should have an oil change every 7,500 miles. We had oil changes every year from purchase to failure. Some at 8,000 miles to 15,000 miles. There are MANY complaints and cases open for the 2016 Kia Sorento engine failure. We have a 2012 Kia Sorento that the engine failed but a recall was issued for finding metal shavings in the engine. We purchased a 2021 Telluride in June but, moving forward we will not be purchasing anymore Kia vehicles. We are truly disappointed that Kia found a way out of our case and will not warranty our engine.
leaks oil like crazy and constantly adding oil but no obvious leak engine shaking very bad, idling very hard and not shifting properly
I'M HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN MY 2016 KIA SORENTO EX AWD. JUST YESTERDAY I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE TIRE ROTATION AND COOLANT FLUSH. ONE OF THE SERVICE ADVISORS HAD LET ME KNOW THAT THE VEHICLE IS LEAKING OIL AND I'M GOING TO NEED A NEW OIL PRESSURE SWITCH AND A NEW DRAIN PAN SINCE THAT'S WHERE IT'S LEAKING FROM. FOR A PRICE OF $425. UPON LOOKING AND SCOURING THE INTERNET IT LOOKS LIKE THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH KIA AND JUST THE STEP BEFORE OF ENGINE FAILURE. I DON'T KNOW WHY NHTSA DOESN'T MAKE THIS A STANDARD RECALL CONSIDERING THE SPORTAGE HAS THE SAME RECALL AVAILABLE. I MEAN IT'S A KNOWN FACT KIA ENGINES ARE LACKING IN OIL ,CATCHING ON FIRE AND FAILING. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED TO BE REST ASSURE WITH MY UNEASINESS ABOUT BUYING A USED CAR AND I'VE BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP GETTING REPAIRS LEFT AND RIGHT. I'M NOT EVEN AT 60,000 MILES AND THAT'S HOW LUDICROUS THIS IS! GRANTED THE FIRST PERSON WHO OWNED THE VEHICLE OR AT LEAST IT RATHER PUT 19,000 MILES ON IT. IT'S ALREADY BEEN IN FOR SERVICE WITH THE TRANSMISSION I NEEDED A TORQUE CONVERTER AND THAT WAS COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY THANK GOODNESS AND NOW THIS OIL LEAK FROM THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH AND OIL PAN NEEDS TO ALSO BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT I'M OUT OF LUCK. THERE'S THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THE SAME DARN PROBLEM.

STARTED GOING UP A MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY AND MY CAR STARTED JUMPING AND IMMEDIATELY DECREASED SPEED. IT WOULD NOT GO AND KEPT SKIPPING, LIKE A STOP AND GO TYPE OF DEAL. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTING FLASHING AND I HAD TO PULL OVER. AFTER I GOT MY CAR TOWED IT WAS FOUND THAT THE CAR HAD ZERO OIL IN IT. LIKE BONE DRY BUT WITH ZERO LEAKS ANYWHERE. THE MECHANIC CHECKED EVERYTHING TWICE TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING ELSE WAS INTACT AND IT WAS. MY OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON AND IT NEVER SMOKED OR OVERHEATED. I HAD ZERO INDICATION THAT THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE OIL. I WAS 900+ MILES FROM MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. IT WAS LIKE THE OIL EVAPORATED INTO THIN AIR. WE ARE COMPLETELY BAFFLED AS TO WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE ANY OIL IN IT. BECAUSE OF NO OIL, A PISTON BROKE AND THE ENGINE THREW A ROD AND IT IS RUINED. MY CAR NEEDS A WHOLE NEW ENGINE NOW. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THE CAR WAS NO OIL AND THAT IT WAS LIKE IT JUST DISAPPEARED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OIL RESIDUE ANYWHERE.

I HAD ABOUT 62,500 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS JUST BLOWING COLD AIR FROM THE HEATER. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO STALL AND RAPID DECELLERATE. THANKFULLY THE HIGHWAY WASN'T TOO BUSY AND WE JUST MADE IT ACROSS THE LANES TO THE SHOULDER; IT COULD'VE BEEN VERY TRAGIC IF WE GOT STUCK IN A LANE, ESPECIALLY SINCE THERE WAS NO WARNING WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEFORE THIS. THE VEHICLE WAS SMOKING. WE GOT IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CONFIRMED IT WAS OVERHEATING BUT COULDN'T DIAGNOSIS FULL ENGINE ISSUE. WE HAD TO GET TO A KIA DEALER TO DO AN ENGINE TEAR DOWN. THEY FOUND 6 THREADS STRIPPED AND DECIDED THEN IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. WE'VE CONSISTENTLY DONE OUR OIL CHANGES AND MAINTENANCE SO IS VERY CONCERNING HOW QUICKLY AND SEVERELY THIS ENGINE ISSUE CAME UP. UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE JUST PAST THE 60K MILE WARRANTY AND KIA IS WILLING TO ONLY OFFER MINOR ASSISTANCE DESPITE EVIDENCE OF OTHER VEHICLES HAVING SIMILAR ENGINE ISSUES.

WHILE PASSING, SUDDEN LOSS OF ALL POWER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. FROM THAT POINT ON, VERY LOW POWER. WHEN I GOT HOME, THERE WAS A FAIRLY LOUD ENGINE KNOCK AND OIL COMING FROM TAIL PIPE. TOOK CAR TO INDEPENDENT SHOP WHO DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS ROD KNOCK. HAD THE CAR TOWED TO KIA DEALER WHO THEN SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. ONLY 82,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. KIA COVERED THE PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE. WHEN THE SHOP DROPPED THE ENGINE, THEY NOTICED THE DRIVE SPLINES ON BOTH THE AWD TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION WERE BOTH RUSTED AND ALL TEETH SHEARED OFF ON THE FWD SIDE OF THE SPINES. RWD STILL INTACT. KIA WOULD NOT COVER NEITHER WOULD THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY BECAUSE OF THE RUST. THAT IS A SEALED UNIT WITH MULTIPLE RUBBER GASKETS. HOW COULD IT POSSIBLY HAVE RUSTED? THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW AS THERE SHOULD BEEN ADEQUATE HEAVY LUBRICANT AS WELL AS SEALING TO PREVENT THESE PARTS FROM RUSTING. NEW TRANSMISSION REQUIRED $1800, AND NEW TRANSFER CASE WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER $2500. CHOSE SLIGHTLY USED UNIT FOR $1000. IT TOOK ALMOST 8 WEEKS TO RESOLVE. NOW CAR IS LEAKING OIL ON TO EXHAUST. BACK TO DEALER IT GOES...

TWO OIL CHANGE STATIONS TOLD ME I NEED A NEW POWER TRAIN. I KNOW POWER TRAIN IS COVERED UNDER 100,000 MILES FOR KIA. WANT TO SEE IF I NEED YOUR HELP IN THE PROCESS FOR DEFECT OR ANYTHING ELSE TO ASSIST ME AT NEAREST KIA DEALERSHIP?
TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE AT 50 THOUSAND MILES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. TRANSMISSION ACTING FUNNY & SHIFTING HARD IN WEEKS PRIOR TO ENGINE FAILURE.

I STARTED EXPERIENCING OVERHEATING ISSUES IN JULY. KNOWING KIAS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR ENGINE TROUBLE, MY MECHANIC CHECKED THE HEAD GASKET. IT WAS FINE BUT MY RADIATOR FAN NEEDED REPLACED. THE VERY NEXT DAY AFTER HAVING MY FAN REPLACED, MY HEAD GASKET BLEW, DRIVING DOWN A STATE ROUTE. NO WARNING, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, NOTHING. I HAVE NOW HAD MY ENTIRE ENGINE REPLACED (LONG BLOCK, CYLINDER HEAD, AND GASKETS). THEY HAVE NOW DISCOVERED THAT MY RADIATOR IS LEAKING, WHICH LIKE THE RADIATOR FAN, IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IT SEEMS THAT KIA KNOWS THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THESE CARS AND IS DOING NOTHING TO RECALL THEM.

2016 KIA SORENTO WITH 67,000 MILES HAD FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. CAR WAS TOWED TO THE KIA DEALERSHIP IN WHICH THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THE FUEL INJECTOR WAS BROKEN WHICH SPILLED FUEL INTO THE MOTOR CAUSING $7,800.00 OF DAMAGE. THE DIAGNOSIS SIS NOT AND WILL NOT DETERMINE IF IT IS A FAULTY INJECTOR AND KIA WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN COVERING THE OTHER PARTS EFFECTED IN THE WARRANTY. THEY OFFERED A GOOD GRACE ASSISTANCE FOR $2,500 BUT OFFERED A HIGHER PRICE ON THE PARTS SAYING THEY ARE PARTS COVERED IN A FACTORY MANUFACTURING WARRANTY. REGARDLESS I NEVER HAD SYMPTOMS OF A WORN FUEL INJECTOR AND BELIEVE THE FUEL INJECTOR IS AND WAS FAULTY AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER. THE KIA MANAGERS BELIEVE THIS IS NORMAL FOR CARS AND THAT THEY WILL NOT COMPLY WITH THE WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THE INJECTOR CAUSING THE DAMAGE. THE INJECTOR IS NOT COVERED IN THE LIMITED 100,000 MILE WARRANTY. THIS HAPPENED ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 16, 2019 AND WAS ON A ACCESS ROAD 5 MILES AWAY FROM MY HOME. CURRENTLY THE CAR IS AT THE DEALERSHIP WHILE I WAIT FOR THE NEXT SUPERVISOR FROM KIA CORPORATE CALL ME IN REGARDS TO THE FINAL OFFER ON THIS REPAIR.
TAKATA RECALL WHILE DRIVING MY CAR, IT COMPLETELY SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. IT WAS ALMOST LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GAS BUT HAD A FULL TANK GAS. WE TESTED THE BATTERY ALSO. IT STILL FAILED TO START BACK. IT WOULD NOT START BACK AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS AND I HAD TO GET IT TOWED YESTERDAY. THE MECHANICS I HAD IT TOWED TO SAYS THEY THINK IT MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ENGINE BUT ARE UNSURE.
Mileage: 110,000
MY TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE DRIVING, STOPPING AND PICKING UP BECAME UNSAFE. I TOOK IT INTO A KIA DEALERSHIP SINCE IT BECAME DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THERE WAS A TSB SA292 PATCH THAT WAS INTENDED TO PREVENT THIS EXACT ISSUE. KIA IS ONLY WILLING TO COVER PART OF THE COST. I FEEL THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE A RECALL SINCE IT MAKES THE VEHICLE DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.

MULTIPLE TIMES I WILL BE DRIVING ALONG, AND AT EITHER A SLOW SPEED OR STOPPED AT A LIGHT, THE CAR WILL JUST SHUT OFF. THIS IS NOT SAFE! ALSO 2 TIMES THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS HAVE NOT COME ON IN THE DARK EVEN IF YOU TURN THEM ON YOURSELF NOTHING COMES ON AND ITS BEEN DARK DRIVING WHEN THAT'S HAPPENED! I'M WORRIED FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND CHILDREN IN THIS CAR, AND THE DEALERSHIP AND SERVICE DEPT DO NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. BUT IN LOOKING ONLINE A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THIS COMPLAINT AS WELL! IF THIS HAPPENED TO ME AT A HIGH SPEED OR DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND INJUR PEOPLE! PLEASE HELP!

I WAS DRIVING AROUND 30 MPH ON A LOCAL SIDE STREET AND THE CAR SHUT OFF WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE DASHBOARD WENT BLACK AND THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING. I HAD TO PULL THE CAR OVER, PUT IT IN PARK, TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION. I WAITED A FEW SECONDS AND STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND DROVE IT HOME (~1 MILE FROM HOME). I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AS I DID NOT FEEL IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE IT THERE.

NO IMMEDIATE RESPONSE FROM ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHEN PRESSED AT IDLE WITH CAR STATIONARY IN GEAR. PRESSING MORE ON ACCELERATOR TO GET CAR MOVING CAUSES CAR TO THEN ACCELERATE RAPIDLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST SIX TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR.

WE ARE SECOND OWNERS OF A 2016 KIA SORRENTO. DEC 6, 2017, I WAS DRIVING HOME AND TRAVELING ABOUT 60MPH ON A 2LANE HWY WHEN I FELT A VERY SEVERE CLUNK IN THE FRONT AREA OF THE CAR AND I LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. I CHECKED THE CAR AND FOUND NOTHING UNORDINARY. I DROVE AT DECREASED SPEED (40MPH) FOR ANOTHER 3 MILES WHEN AGAIN THE CAR DID 2 QUICK, HEAVY THUMPS AND THE ENGINE QUIT ALONG WITH ALL POWER AND ELECTRICAL. I GOT IT OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE RESTARTED, SO I DROVE HOME. I CALLED THE KIA DEALER IN ST. AUGUSTINE AND THE SERVICE LADY SAID THAT SHE HAD HEARD THE EXACT PROBLEM TWICE BEFORE. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND RELAYED WHAT HIS TEC HAD TOLD ME, THEN DROVE TO THEIR DEALERSHIP (40 MILES) WITH NO PROBLEM, BUT FEAR OF BEING ON HIGHWAY WITH THE VEHICLE. THEY DROVE THE VEHICLE AND CHECKED IT OUT BUT FOUND NO PROBLEMS I CAME HOME AND READ ON THE INTERNET REVIEWS OF KIA APPARENTLY BEING UNWILLING TO DEAL WITH PROBLEMS.. IT BECAME MORE APPARENT WHY THE YOUNG LADY I TALKED TO ON THE PHONE SEEMED UNWILLING TO REPEAT OR DISCUSS WHAT SHE HAD TOLD ME. AFTER CONSULTING WITH SEVERAL KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE, THAT IT WAS PROBABLY AN INADVERTENT DOWN-SHIFT AND GEARS THAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. THIS COULD CAUSE A VERY DANGEROUS AND OR DEADLY SITUATION ON THE ROADWAY, AND ESPECIALLY ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE CAR JUST QUITS AND YOU LOOSE ALL POWER. THE DEALER STATED "BRING IT DIRECTLY IN IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN." IF YOU'RE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE WITH TRUCKS, CARS AND BUSSES BEHIND YOU, AT A HIGH SPEED AND IT HAPPENS, YOU'LL BE LUCKY TO SURVIVE IT.... DUH!

THIS 2016 KIA SORENTO (MFG 10/27/14) WILL LOSE POWER/TRACTION IN A PARKING LOT WHEN TRYING TO PULL OUT INTO CROSS TRAFFIC, CREATING A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. THE DEALER SAYS HE IS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE CANNOT FIX IT. I CANNOT SELL/GIVE THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE TO A FAMILY MEMBER UNTIL IT IS CORRECTED. VERY DANGEROUS.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM MARK JACKOBSON TOYOTA ON OR ABOUT 8/20/2017. ACCORDING TO THE RECALL NOTICE IN THE GOVERNMENT DATA BASE, THE RECALL FOR THE "REAR ASSIST ARM BRACKET WELD MAY BREAK" WAS ISSUED ON OR ABOUT 7/21/2016. I BELIEVE THAT THE DEALERSHIP THAT SOLD ME THIS VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE NEVER LET MY WIFE DRIVE THE ABOVE VEHICLE OFF THE CAR LOT DUE TO THE POTENTIAL OF CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. I WOULD LIKE THIS LETTER TO REPRESENT MY FIRST STEP IN FILLING A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE DEALERSHIP. WE NOTICED THAT HERE WAS A NOISE ON THE SAME DAY THAT THE PAPER WORK FOR THE VEHICLE WAS SIGNED.MY WIFE HAD THE DEALERSHIP MECHANIC LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AT THE SAME TIME THE PAPER WAS BEING SIGNED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE A BAD BEARING OR SOMETHING AND INSTRUCTED MY WIFE TO CALL THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. THE RECEPTIONIST STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER A KIA WARRANTY AND THAT WE NEEDED TO GO TO KIA. IT WAS AT THE KIA DEALER SHIP THAT WE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL. HOWEVER MARK JACKOBSON PRODUCED A DOCUMENT THAT I HAD SIGNED STATING THE RECALL. BUT I INTERPRETED THE DOCUMENT AS MEANING THAT THE RECALL HAD BEEN TAKEN CARE, OF. I BELIEVE THAT MARK JACOSON IN GOOD FAITH SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAD LET MY WIFE DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE LOT. THERE WASN'T ANY PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AS SHE ONLY DROVE IT FOR ABOUT A WEEK OR TWO PRIOR TO TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE KIA DEALERSHIP. I BELIEVE THAT THERE SHOULD BE SOME LAW THAT WOULD PREVENT A DEALERSHIP FROM SELLING A VEHICLE AND THEN ALLOWING THE CUSTOMER TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE LOT KNOWING THAT THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL THE HAD NEVER BEEN RESOLVED.
WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO 2ND GEAR THE TRANSMISSION DOES A HARD DOWNSHIFT RIGHT AROUND 25-31 MPH CAUSING THE CAR TO JERK.

MY WIFE HAD THE VEHICLE PARKED ON A SLIGHT SLOPE IN HER MOMS DRIVE WAY MAYBE A 10 DEGREE HILL. SHE PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND LEFT IT RUNNING WHILE MY DAUGHTER FINISHED A BIRTHDAY CARD SHE WAS MAKING IN THE BACK SEAT. MY WIFE STEPPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO GET SOME TISSUE PAPER OUT OF THE BACK WITH THE DRIVERS DOOR OPEN SHE PRESSED THE REAR DOOR /HATCH RELEASE OR OPEN BUTTON LOCATED ON THE DASH. SHE PRESSED THE BUTTON AT THAT MOMENT THE VEHICLE CAME OUT OF PARK AND WENT INTO REVERSE NEARLY RUNNING HER OVER SHE TRIED TO GET IN BUT THE VEHICLE TOOK OFF TO FAST SHE WAS KNOCKED OVER MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR ROLLING OUT OF CONTROL DOWN THE DRIVE WAY. THE VEHICLE FOLLOWED THE DRIVEWAY DOWN CROSSING THE MAIN ROAD ONLY DOING SOME LIGHT DAMAGE WHERE IT RAN OVER THE MAIL BOX AND STOPPED BY HITTING A TREE. WE CONTACTED KIA AND OUR INSURANCE. KIA OPENED A CASE #K3237787 AND THEN THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED SINCE. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED AND LEFT IT THERE. WE HAVE STILL NO ANSWERS WHAT THEY ARE PLANNING TO DO WITH THIS VEHICLE. THIS EVENT HAPPENED ON 7-25-2016. WE ARE REQUESTING SOME HELP DUE TO NOT HAVING A VEHICLE WE FEEL IS SAFE TO PARK AND NOT WORRYING ABOUT IT COMING OUT OF GEAR AND POTENTIALLY KILLING SOMEONE IN ITS PATH. WE ALSO WOULD LIKE TO HAVE OUR VEHICLE REPAIRED AND BACK TO DRIVE SINCE WE ARE PAYING FOR IT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 KIA SORENTO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD BE SHUT OFF WHILE IT WAS ENGAGED IN ANY GEAR. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE CONTACT SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT IT BEING PARKED AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED AWAY. THE LAST TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE CONTACT FELL TO THE GROUND WHILE ATTEMPTING TO GET IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GET UP AND STOP THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT CRASHED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT COME EQUIPPED WITH A GEAR SHIFT INTERLOCK. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,300.

YOU CAN SHIFT THE CAR FROM PARK TO REVERSE/DRIVE WITHOUT PUTTING ENOUGH PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE TO ACTUALLY ENGAGE THE BRAKE PADS TO THE BRAKE ROTORS. IF YOU AREN'T PAY ATTENTION TO HOW HARD YOU ARE PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE, THE CALL WILL START TO MOVE AT A NORMAL SPEED. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TWO KIA DEALERSHIPS AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL AND SAFE. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. ONE DEALERSHIP EVEN CHECKED OTHER 2016 SORENTOS ON THE LOT AND IT WAS THE SAME FOR THEM AS WELL. THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY.
