Engine Failed Mid Drive. Started with knocking sound then went into limp mode and then shut off and did not want to start. Car failed in the middle of traffic and could of injured me and others. I've read of other failures of the same models but for some reason the 2017 model isn't eligible for the settlement even though the same issues are present in the 2017 Kia Soul Models. Had to have my vehicle towed home.

To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint to report that a Kia dealership of garden grove, ca falsely recorded a safety recall as “completed” on my 2019 Kia Soul Upon review from another kia dealer, I discovered that the recall repair — essential to prevent engine failure — was never actually performed. My engine has now failed catastrophically (broken connecting rod at 128,600 miles), consistent with the known risks that recall was meant to address. This misrepresentation by the dealership not only endangered my safety but also undermines the recall process intended to protect consumers. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this matter and ensure accountability for the dealer and manufacturer. To answer your questions more directly. : 1.Connecting rod exploded out of engine. Kia is aware of thier faulty torque on said part. 2 My wife was driving on the free way with her kid at the time and could have caused a major accident. 3.yes they had a class action lawsuit against the recall. 4. The car is waiting at kia dealer. I was told that the update they didnt do that was put out in 2022 was not done when bought and brought to said dealer in January 2024 and that another recall was said to be done but was not done . 5. There was a knocking or shaking but when asking the mechanics hired by the dealer they said it was the rotors . We replace the rotors and a week later the connecting rod shot out of the engine.

Perform check engine light diagnosis. Heard knocking noise at any speed even at idle. Added 2 quarts of oil. P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold Bank 1. The engine is consuming too much oil and has a noise coming from the valve train. Also, a slight rod bearing knock. Our auto mechanic had told us to check with Kia Dealership because it is a known issue on this vehicle. But the Kia declined to repair.

While driving on June 30, 2025, the engine gave a loud clunking noise, shuttered and shut down. I was able to pull over to the side of the road safely and not impede traffic, however this happened on a public roadway and had the potential of causing different results. I had no warning lights on the dash, no check engine lights came on, no LOW OIl light and/or no other warning signals appeared. I was able to restart the vehicle and it shuttered but was able to drive it at a low reduced speed to get it into a more safer place. The vehicle was towed to the dealership the following morning. The dealership was able to inspect the vehicle and confirmed it was a total engine failure. The dealership has done all the service maintenance since the date of purchase as a new car, with the exception of 3 oil changes throughout the past 8 years. The documentation show all maintenance was done in an approved licensed facility and in the prefered time frames requested by the manufacture. The vehicle has a 150,000 mi warranty and at the time of the incident the mileage was 74,000. Kia is denying the claim and is refusing to replace the engine. I am uncertain of the next steps to take at this point, referring to the Attorney General in my state for advise for product liability claim to hold the manufacture responsible for it's defective engine which has been an issue for this make and model.

I was driving and all a sudden my engine light came on and the car started like stuttering with no power very scarey. The mechanic said the 3 power train warranties on my car would not fix he said I need a new engine and I still owe like 12000 ugg.

The issue involves the engine’s piston rings, which appear to be malfunctioning and causing excessive oil consumption. This has led to oil entering the combustion chamber and likely damaging the catalytic converter. The engine began consuming oil rapidly between oil changes — far more than normal — and has since developed engine knocking and performance issues. These symptoms are consistent with piston ring failure in other 2017 Kia Soul models that have been recalled, though my VIN is not currently included. • Component or system that failed: The likely failure is with the piston rings, which are allowing oil to burn inside the engine. This has begun to impact the catalytic converter as well. All parts remain installed and are available for inspection upon request. • Safety risks: This situation puts my safety and the safety of others at risk, as the engine could seize or stall unexpectedly due to low oil levels or catalytic converter failure. Excessive oil burning also increases the risk of internal engine fire and significantly affects emissions. • Has it been reproduced or confirmed? Yes. The issue has been confirmed by an independent mechanic, who documented abnormal oil loss, engine knocking, and suspected damage to the emissions system. • Has it been inspected by others? The vehicle has not been inspected by Kia, law enforcement, or insurance, but has been examined by a certified independent technician who suspects piston ring failure. • Warning lamps or symptoms: Yes. The check engine light came on, and engine performance began to decline. I also noticed knocking sounds and sluggish acceleration. These symptoms started a few months ago and progressively worsened. The oil was being consumed rapidly even though no visible leaks were found. • Assessment of incident and cause: Based on mechanic feedback and my experience, this appears to be a case of premature piston ring failure, which is causing oil to burn internally and is likely leading to catalytic damage.

The contact called on behalf of her neighbor who owns a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. A mobile independent mechanic replaced the starter. The contact stated while the neighbor was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The driver was unable to pull over to the side of the road. The driver was able to push the vehicle to the side of the road with the assistance of bystanders. The vehicle was pushed to a business place parking lot, where the mobile mechanic diagnosed that the engine had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

My 2017 Kia Soul (VIN: [XXX] ) is experiencing piston ring failure, which has led to excessive oil consumption and the failure of my catalytic converter. The engine is a 2.0L Nu MPI—the same engine type covered under Kia recalls SC176 and SC200—but my VIN is currently excluded. This is a known manufacturing defect that causes oil to enter the combustion chamber, damaging the catalytic converter and violating emissions standards. The repair costs are unaffordable for my family, and Kia refuses to cover them despite California’s extended emissions warranty and identical symptoms to covered vehicles. Many other owners of 2017 Kia Souls with the same engine are also reporting these issues. I am requesting that NHTSA expand the recall to include my VIN and investigate Kia’s exclusion of affected vehicles with the same engine. - Engine failure/seizure with rod bearing failure! Yes, vehicle is available for inspection upon request. - Myself and my wife were driving through a busy intersection light when the engine failed and went into limp mode (Engine Control System) causing an abrupt stop in the middle of the intersection which forced multiple cars to have to slow down and break to not hit us. My wife is pregnant and a recent brain cancer survivor and this put all of our lives at risk! - Yes the problem has been confirmed by the Kia dealer with a full diagnostic inspection and confirmed reports of engine rod bearing failure. This is a known defect with this Kia engine. The car has never had any issues before and has always had regular maintenance and all software/recall updates applied in a timely manner! The car has never had any oil leaks, or leaks or issues of any kind until this day when the engine suddenly failed! All reports for maintenance history and recall updates are available. Many report this same issue online at around 100k mile range. My 2017 Kia Soul is at 108k miles. Metal shavings were found in the oil when the diagnostics were performed to further confirm this known reported engine defect. The oil was low but had never been low before and the oil or check engine light never have come on previously or leading up to this engine failure. - The vehicle and/or engine has been inspected by Kia the manufacturer/dealer. The dealer confirmed this is due to the known engine defect where a recall software update was issued and applied and is widely reported online by other owners. Police, and insurance have not inspected it because there was no accident and they do not cover engine failure/seizure. - As stated there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms such as oil or check engine light ever in the history of the car or leading up to this failure. Just before the engine failed it began to make a slight knocking sound from the engine as widely known with this defect.

Car stalls when at a stop. Restart ignition stalls again when placed into drive and accelerator is pressed. Restart, brake pedal and accelerator pressed at same time, while put into gear, and then it will move. The oil light and battery light comes on when it stalls.

After driving about 2,000 miles after an oil change, the oil warning light comes on. This happens regardless of whether I use 3,000-mile or 5,000-mile oil. When I check the oil, it is completely gone. This issue started about a year ago, and now I always carry extra oil because I am worried. My car has a 2016-manufactured engine, but since it is a 2017 model, the dealership says it is not eligible for a recall and refuses to repair it. They told me that if I want a detailed inspection, I would have to pay for the inspection and repairs myself, even if it is an engine defect. I don’t know what to do. Please help me!

I purchased my car new from the dealer in August of 2017; at 40,000 I started having an excessive oil consumption issue. I took it repeatedly to the dealer for remedy under the warranty. They examined and performed services that failed to remedy the issue. From my research I learned that this problem arises from faulty piston rings and valves. I continued to take the vehicle to the dealer, and their response was that oil consumption on my vehicle was within their specifications. Currently my vehicles has 103867 miles and the KIA warranty has expired. The engine burns 1 quart of oil every 300 miles. Prior to expiration of the warranty I filed a warranty claim with Consumer Assistance and the matter was referred to Mediation and Arbitration, and the arbitrator declined my demand for replacement of the engine. This morning I noticed an article on the WEB that KiA vehicles (including Souls) were being recalled to prevent engine fires from faulty piston rings. This prompted me to get my complaint on file.

My husband was travelling down the highway in our car with my [XXX] in the back seat. Suddenly the motor seized up and the car started the rattle. The car came to a stop. We had the car towed to a Kia dealership and was told that the engine had seized up and would need to be replaced. I also found out about a known issue with Kia engines. I had never heard about it. We are the second owner and weren't notified that there was an issue. They are claiming that they don't have to fix the car because we hadn't had a knock sensor repaired. I don't know how we were supposed to know about it. Because it wasn't actually a recall, I couldn't even look it up. Even though the error is Kia's, they refuse to fix the car. There were no warning lights before this incident. The car was fine and then suddenly shut down on the interstate. It's a miracle, we weren't killed. 09/06/2024 MY KIA SOUL ENGINE BROKE DOWN TOWED TO A MECHANIC SHOP AND DETERMINED IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE, DUE TO A RECALL THAT WAS ISSUED BEFORE MY OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. KIA DECLINES DOING THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT UNDER THE 150,000 WARRANTY, DUE TO THE RECALL NEVER BEING TAKEN CARE OF. SPOKE TO THE DEALER I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FROM AND AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE THEY HAD NO RECORD OF A RECALL BEING PRESENT ON THE VEHICLE. ATTACHED IS VEHICLES CARFAX AND DATES OF INCIDENTS.

Hi Nikki - This vehicle has an engine issue as of [XXX] when my car broken down on the road. The engine sputtered and the car was inoperable. I was told to call the Wynn’s Extended Warranty, however it was late and there was no one available to answer the call. So then my car was taken by AAA to their repair facility where they diagnosed the vehicle with needing a new engine. At that point, they called in to make sure the engine was covered by Wynn’s and they were told to have it towed to Kia as the car is below 100,000 miles and should be covered by them. Kia the performed a diagnosis and told me the engine needed to be replaced today on 10/7. They informed me the car would not be covered due to the car’s two engine recalls that were not performed on the vehicle prior to my possession of the vehicle. Wynn’s also stated the car would not be covered by them as this is a manfacturer’s issue and they should cover it. Kia cannot cover it due to the open engine recalls. I was not informed of these recalls when I bought the car three months ago and the car currently sits close to 87000 miles with a total of four open recalls according to Kia. There have been over 20 calls made to both Kia and Wynn’s and Wynn’s will not allow us to talk to their Claims department as we are not a repair facility. There is a current $13,000 bill for a new engine at Kia and they are saying it is my responsibility. I have a voice recording between the Kia service advisor and the wynns warranty rep. Please advise who & when this is covered as this has played a huge part of stress, lack of transportation, and overall my life without a vehicle. I’m very inconvenienced as a result of this. I have wasted too much time and my own $ for my local KIA to dismiss their on going re-appointments and months of different service technicians to not have them reacting to an engine light to never retry something not done right. Now, they have my 2017 KiA Soul+ wrongly listed as no recalls remaining. I am trying to be as proactive and not lose my Kia or several more months of covering the Killeen, Tx Dennis Eakin KIA’s rear to quietly avoid redoing more recall call backs they need to finish. So now your national government database shows my Kia doesn’t have the P0420 catalyst and O2 sensor listed. —-I did my part for Killeen KiA and paid my $ to prove to them the check light kept coming back on after they turned it off in early 2022. The gas mileage is horrible. I’m a handicap driver on fixed income, but no stranger auto warns. After a couple recall, full engine replacement attempts. Since my local KIA services, have re-called their own and also factory mechanical repairs. Both myself and Kia have basically had custody of my 2017 KIA. The last attempt they took back my now 2nd reshaped/fresh block from the first ever KIA recall that blew the piston the first few months I invested into this KIA. Every attempt to fix the next following recalls or unfinished work, I was told about late 2021 locally “if I can bring KIA a code of the engine light”(they temporarily hid) Then maybe they would go back and fix it or recall what needs to be fixed. I paid a mechanic after 3 attempts since 2021 of barely getting to drive my KIA. The code is P0420 I already have enough basic vehicle knowledge, to understand it was exhaust system stalling me (and the suspension) ( hack hydraulic also stopped functioning) I do love my KIA and do not want to start ideas of revamping my interest to Dodge or Chevy yet. I just want the recall for the catalyst/O2 and thermostat issue done or redone if my local KIA attempted to check off the P0420 recall before my engine fails again.

Burning oil and engine failure! According to Kia this is "a common issue" unbeknownst to consumers. This is VERY dangerous. The vehicle has been been sitting at a repair shop waiting for warranty approval.

I was driving down a freeway after changing my oil when my car began backfiring, which was strange so I pulled over and checked my engine but I saw nothing wrong, so I went back to driving so I could get home, but as I was driving home, the engine made a loud clang and then the engine completely died. I had come to find out later after paying to have my car towed home that it had infact overheated, and blown a piston straight through the engine block.

Jun 26, 2024

Just had an oil change done a couple months ago, the two previous oil changes I had, the merchanics advised me that the engine had less oil than it should for how little miles had been put on it. took it in today since it started making a "ticking" noise, and was informed that there was hardly any oil in the engine, and that was the cause. it had only been driven 2000 miles since the last change. they informed me of a TSB that was out for the 2017 souls that have a 1.6L engine (reference number PS739) that basically says that a defect is causing an engine oil leak due to a dowel pin. contacted a dealership per their advice and they told me that it is not covered by Kia even though it is a known issue by them, looking at several of the other complaints against this vehicle it seems to be a very common issue and should be addressed by the manufacturer, and not have to be paid out of pocket by the consumer. This should be recalled immediately to prevent people's engines from being burnt up due to the engine over consuming oil

The engine failed and the car just stopped running. The safety of me and my family was put at risk. I barely could get the car off the road as I'm disabled. I had to call for help.

May 31, 2024

The engine failed on an Arizona highway, at night, while my daughter was driving from Arizona to California. My daughter's safety, and that of her friend who was also in the car, was put at risk due to the near inability to move the vehicle off of the highway and onto the shoulder. This route [XXX] ) is a major highway used by truckers and regular vehicles. Her hazards lasted just long enough for the tow truck to arrive. Her hazard lights were dying just as the tow truck driver pulled up. I can't imagine what could have happened if she was sitting on the side of the road, in a black car at night, with no functioning hazard lights. We were able to get the vehicle towed back to San Tan Valley, Arizona. I called several Kia service departments and was told that there was an engine recall up to the 2016 models, but the 2017 models were not included. No inspection has been done on the vehicle up to this point. The check engine light did come on and was flashing at the time of the failure. We have since pulled the plugs in the vehicle and are seeing metal shaving on one of the plugs. Codes checked on the vehicle indicate multiple misfires. 05/18/2024 (Saturday) I was driving home from my parents house. After approximately 7 miles from leaving their home the check engine light came on. The car became sluggish and seamed to not have a lot of power. I drove the car approximately another 7 miles straight to the dealership for it is be examined. On Monday 05/20/2024 they called to tell me that I needed a new engine because the car had metal shaving in the engine. I asked the service rep how this was possible they she replied she did not know. I explained to her that I could not pay $7,800 + tax for a new engine. She asked me to wait and see what she could do. She called me back the next day 05/21/2024 to inform that she spoke with the manager and that they would be able to complete the work for $5,100 + tax. On 05/22/2024 I explained that I be picking up the car and having it towed to my house, I paid Kia Palmdale $220.00 for the diagnostic. My concern is that how can my car have no oil, never did any warning light come on. If the error code listed on their paperwork, they list p1326. There are many Kia cars with this problem listed as a faulty engine. Listed this the past 2 oil changes: 12/12/2023 Jiffy Lube 156,293 miles 03/28/2024 Jiffy Lube 160,692 miles 05/18/2024 car breaks down at 163,498 miles with no oil. this makes no sense. I would also like to add that ever since the car was purchased at Kia Palmdale every single maintenance was done at their location, even to the point of paying $1,059.69 for their 120,000 miles check-up on 01/31/2022. Kia Palmdale has all these records for again, there should be no reason the car not to give a warning and go to engine failure.

Last year check engine light came on & It was time to get my oil change, So you know when they connect the car to that reader well it came back It was my catalytic converter And so I was like that's really expensive ,check engine light ended up going off then on. Now mind you I always keep up the maintenance on this vehicle. So let's fast forward A little bit My next oil change comes around This establishment put my car on the reader again catalytic converter comes up again. I get the oil change And then 1 month later my car gives me a notice telling me I need oil I take it back to my establishment And there was no oil in there Had to get another oil change to put new oil instead of stuff and then they told me that Issues which is causing the catalytic converter to fail which is sucking up oil causing oil issues the Gentlemen informed me I can Replace my catalytic converter but This issue is still gonna happen because my motor is going bad So in other words I can replace my catalytic converter And later on down the line I'm gonna have to replace it again because of the motor now this does pose risk to my family because I put myself my grandchildren my children in this vehicle We could be driving back from vacation or what have you and stall in the middle of nowhere because the motor quit on us or the oil runs low causing Engine trouble Which is not acceptable. So wondering Why isn't there a recall Or 1 that I'm aware of Then I looked this stuff up and there's a lot of people with the same issue as myself

On 3/22/24, my 2017 Kia Soul started making a backfiring noises while I was on the interstate. Then I heard a loud noise and the car starting losing speed and finally just quit after about a 1/4 of a mile. I had to have car towed to repair shop. I called for roadside assistance from AAA. (They couldn’t, of course, get the car started). Mechanic said motor seized and now has to be replaced. I’ve always kept up with oil changes on time. The car had never used or leaked oil since I’ve owned since August 2017. There were no warning lamps on before the car died. I was at high risk during this incident in heavy interstate traffic, barely able to get off the interstate to the median before it shut down. Never had issues or repairs before this. Car has 106,000 miles. Motors should last way beyond this. Mechanic stated that he’s worked on several Kia souls where motor seized up like this. I have tow receipt from this date. I had to purchase a short block motor and cylinder head from Kia. Took the new motor to the owner/mechanic at repair shop. I’m still waiting on this motor change out to be completed. I’ve had to get rental vehicles and ask for rides for over 5 weeks now. This has been a monumental hardship on me, my family and friends. Vehicle rentals run about $100 per day. I’ve had to spend $1,000 on car rentals when I wasn’t able to borrow a car or get a ride.

The Kia has been using oil sind 78000 miles I've been going to dealership now going on 2 years for issues with the engine. Feb 2024 they put a catalytic converter on. On [XXX] I called told them check engine light was flashing and was rattling and running rough Nick Sheets told me to bring it back on Saturday the [XXX] at 10:00 am. On way to bring it in on the highway [XXX] bypass the car quit and there was a tractor trailer behind me blowing his horn and throwing his hands up air but I couldn't do anything. I turned my emergency flashes on and tried to motion for people to go around me. My friend came and helped me get car off road until wrecker came to tow it to the dealership. Upon arrival they did a combustion test or whatever and said engine was blown. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Engine failed - active codes P0300 and P0303 Cylinder 3 spark plug coated in oil. Only had 10PSI of cylinder PSI. Russ Darrow Waukesha Kia - Wisconsin concluded that a new engine is needed, quoted $9,000. Kia declined to cover the cost, the codes above aren't covered by engine warranty. Before the engine failure, I reported an unusual oil consumption for the vehicle. I researched and found many other 2017 Kia Soul owners who experienced the same incident (engine failure). I believe Kia needs to be held accountable for this engine scam. It's not isolated incidents.

Car has been giving me problems using oil going on 3 years. The Kia dealership keeps having me do different test and repair different stuff. Finally on Saturday March 16,2023 the car broke down right off exit of highway at the light. I was so scared and frustrated people were blowing horn. A man helped me after about 30 minutes get car off road onto shoulder. Had to have it towed to Kia. The did test yet again told me engine is shot. Now waiting approval for a new engine from Kia. This whole time I always check for recalls and stuff on this car but nothing ever shows up. But clearly there is a problem. I bought this car brand new. I have tried all this time with the dealership to make it right I even reported to y'all once before and started a case with Kia corporate. I am at my wits end.

Feb 28, 2024

I am reporting the problem with the starters used in the Kia Soul. My starter went out with no warning. My vehicle had less than 25,000 mi. This occurrence happened 1 yr ago. January of 2023. The temp outside was a blistering 13°below 0. I was stumped by this occurrence. After searching the web for answers- I found myself viewing Utube videos for the problem I was experiencing. I found several about the symptoms, sounds and the behavior of the dash lights that verified the fact That my STARTER has gone out. Upon arrival at Dealership garage, I was told "the manufacturer is aware of the problems with these specific starters but are not willing to do anything about it because of cost" I feel this is a true safety issue. Being January in MN winter, the temperature can be very devastating. I contacted Roadside assistance (their headquarters being in Florida) Stated I needed to stay with my Vehicle for assistance. Finally after 2 days- a tow truck showed up and towed it the Whole 2 miles to the nearest Dealership garage. I can't imagine what could have occurred if I had been further from home with my vulnerable mother or very young Grandkids. This did take place last year, but with further a due I was encouraged to file a complaint about this experience. Hoping enough complaints will inspire an investigation, so others will not have to experience this problem or have this unsafe occurance happen to them or their loved ones.

Had oil changed and noticed car was stalling. Went to get car checked out and there was no oil. Replaced oil and car still had the same issue. Was notified that there was an issue with these cars and burning oil. Engine was replaced but car still has issues.

Feb 6, 2024

The car gave no warning, no lights or anything to tell me that there was something wrong with the engine. The engine started to knock very loud while I was driving on the freeway and completely failed. The car could have caught on fire or blew up while I was driving it or I could have gotten into a very bad accident. As soon as I had heard the knocking I immediately pulled over on the freeway dangerously while cars were speeding by me. There was no warning and the car was driving completely fine. I also saw that there was a recall for other years for the kia soul that had the same engine failures that mine had except that my car did not have a recall.

Engine blew

Jan 31, 2024

Dear Officer, I'm writing to report the powertrain and engine issue on my Green Kia Soul 2017 with a 1.6L engine. The engine misfired when I was driving on Interstate 26 with my whole family (including my wife, mom, and 4-year-old daughter). The speed was down first with no signal and then the car started to shake strongly. It was extremely dangerous as it would very likely have made a collision from the back. I was so scared after that. I couldn't imagine the consequences if the car crashed due to a sudden engine misfire on the interstate. Thank Goodness, we are blessed as there was an exit that led us to get off the interstate. After towing the car to the dealer for a full inspection, I was told to pay at least $6,600 to buy a new engine to fix this issue without a warranty. I do need your help on the engine issue. More importantly, I hope no more similar safety events happening to other drivers and their families. I greatly appreciate your immediate attention and response. Thank you very much. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Engine threw a rod

Dec 30, 2023

My Kias engine had been burning oil i learned at an oil change. I was informed the engine was burning a lot of oil and i had to replace it myself.. i then decided to do an oil consumption and engine test. Kia dealership checked my engine said it looked great but i was burning more than a quart of oil every thousand miles so i had to add it but that it was fine. 1.5 week later while i was driving my car began to violently shake on the highway and my engine light went on. I panicked in morning rush hour traffic and my engine sounded like it exploded. I had to tow it to Kia where they told me the entire engine needed to be replaced and there were multiple holes in the valves. I just bought this car in 2019.. less than 100,000 miles on this car this should NOT happen. This is wildly unsafe i could have killed someone’s or myself on the freeway that morning. Why is this happening and why is my engine not apart of the recall? It should not have exploded out of no where especially when i just added oil the Sunday before this happened. There is something wrong with the engine even though Kia told me it was just fine.

My vehicle check engine came on and it went into limp mode, and I was unable to accelerate over 60mph on my trip from Greensboro, NC to Wilmington, NC. I drove the entire 200 miles in the right lane with my flashers on. To have it towed would have cost me over $600, so I decided to drive. This was the third time this has happened to this vehicle in the past 12 months and each time Coastal Kia said it was fixed and it wasn't. They told me that the code that kept coming up was a knock sensor, but they told me that whatever was causing the knock sensor code was not covered under warranty. They refused to tell me what was causing the knock sensor code because they said that it would cost me too much money. They told me that the rod bearing test was negative, but they would not tell me what the actual problem was. Since they couldn't fix the problem, they did not charge me for labor, but they did make me pay the $1200 for the car rental. I immediately traded the vehicle in for a Honda Fit. Honda gave me $4500 for a trade in on my Kia Soul which, in my opinion, was worth at least $8000. I know that there was a class action suit against Kia that included my Kia Soul. I was hoping to get at least partial reimbursement for the financial loss of having to trade in my vehicle for less than what it was worth and for having to pay the full cost of the rental vehicle. The whole situation just seemed like some type of cover up, like they new what the problem was, but didn't want to make it public for some reason. Please see attached files. Thank You! [XXX] PS: your website would not allow me to upload a copy of the Kia invoice. Please tell me how I can submit the invoice to you by sending me an email to [XXX] . Car burns through oil like no other. I won’t even be half way through my 3000 miles and with no warning the car will be low on oil and stalling in the middle of Turning. Usually when turning left. Mechanic says there isn’t an issue. But no car should be made to burn oil excessively. I can’t even make it the regular 3000 miles. Engine light has come on multiple times. Now replorting catalytic converter issue assuming that’s related to the excessive rate of oil burning.

My daughter's car 2017 Kia Soul (with low milage) suddenly went into limp mode with no previous warning lights. No indication whatsoever of any issues. It just suddenly shut down. This happened on a freeway overpass in Dallas when traffic was moving at 70mph. All of the sudden, my daughter's car began to slow down dramatically and wouldn't speed back up. Freeway overpasses in Dallas are many, many stories above ground level, and traffic backed up behind her. This could have easily caused a catastrophic accident, but thankfully, she was able to limp off of the highway unscathed. Then my [XXX] daughter had to sit in her car on the side of a highway for hours until we could get her help. The problem? Kia's known, but ignored issue of burning oil. Despite her car being within the window of the oil change mileage, her car had burned through the oil on her trip home from college and was dangerously low. There was no warning that it was low until the car suddenly went into limp mode. Not only should Kia be responsible for fixing the manufacturing flaw for consumers that they are harming, they should be investigated for causing safety hazards on our roads. While my daughter is unharmed, this could have easily caused a huge accident and there are thousands of cars like hers burning oil unexpectedly and suddenly shutting down. The government needs to help as consumers do not have enough power. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Break petal would not move and when put in neutral power steering was gone every though car was on and everything else besides break worked. When taken to mechanic I was told a spark plug melted into the engine and the shaking caused one of the ignition coil to become loose and oil to seep in. On 6/30/23 While exiting the highway and waiting at a traffic light he noticed smoke coming from the hood. As he proceeded through the intersection to pull over the dashboard lit up with many lights and then the power went out. He was able to coast to the side of the road. A Police Officer happened to be nearby and called the fire department. When they arrived and opened the hood the engine compartment was in flames. They put the fire out and then the car was towed to a storage yard. A claim was filed with the insurance who then had the car moved to the dealership for repairs. On 7/5/23 Upon arrival, the service advisor proceeded to do their normal intake, put the key in the ignition, and started the car which then burst into flames and became a total loss. The regular driver of the car is disabled and it takes him some time to get in and out of the car, if it had been engulfed in flames he would not have been able to get out as quickly as your average driver. The insurance and manufacturer both have inspected the car and determined it was an engine failure. The car had been to the dealership the week before for an oil change.

The engine of my vehicle began to make a knocking sound while driving, without a warning. It was diagnosed to be due to a broken rod and excessive cylinder clearance, leading to faulty engine, that needs replacement. Yes, it is available for inspection. Due to being stranded off the freeway for over 4 hours, over 300 miles from home, myself and 1 other person were left stranded overnight without a vehicle. We had to pay for an unplanned hotel room for the night and U-Haul to tow the car back home. We did not drive the car further, because we were worried about the possibility of the car and engine overheating or getting worse. Yes, the issue has been diagnosed by a AAA mechanic and Kia service mechanic, who notified me that this issue is common among many other Kias. The Kia service department notified me that I need the engine to be replaced, and that they will not be covering the charges. Additionally, a new engine rod knock sensor has been made for Kias, and I was never notified to get the sensor installed. The engine failure did not lead to any warning lights and when the issue first occurred, I stopped driving the car immediately to not make matters worse. In addition, this vehicle has been maintained regularly (following Kia guidelines), and has only 59000 miles.

First, on January 13, 2023, my 2017 Kia Soul leaked all but 1/4qt. oil while parked in a lot for about 30 minutes. There was no indication of an issue prior to the event. I just happened to see the puddle while walking to my car. On this date I had 64,100miles on the car. I was stranded in a parking lot 3 hours from home for over 9 hours. Mobile mechanic stated it looked like a loose oil filter and did a complete oil change (to include the filter). He said had I tried to drive my car, I would have blown my engine within a few miles. He also stated that the oil pressure sensor was not in good shape and needed replaced as soon as I could do so; within a week, the sensor was replaced. No items available for I inspection but mechanic bills available. Aside from two mechanics, no one else has inspected the vehicle. Now, today, April 16, 2023, I was parked outside a store for about 15 minutes and came out to a puddle of oil under my car. Checked my oil and realized it was just touching the Low indicator on the dipstick. Had to have a friend tow my car home so that my car and I could both be safe this evening. I am not sure what the cause of today's issue is yet as I have not made it to the mechanic; so this is UNKNOWN. However, a full tank of oil leaking out twice in a 3 month slan is not a coincidence. Clearly, there is some sort of issue with the vehicle.

I am writing this letter to inform you of what I feel is an unacceptable situation. On November 17, 2022, my friend and I were heading to a veterinary specialist about 3 hours from where we live. On the way there the engine in her 2017 KIA Soul with about 85,000 miles on it started knocking. I said this isn’t right, so we called for a tow. We had it towed back to our local mechanic, and they said it was a low-end engine knock. The mechanic called the local KIA dealership’s service department to see if it was covered by the warranty. The KIA rep asked for the VIN after which they informed the mechanic since Julie did not respond to a letter (not a recall) sent out about a software upgrade that needed to be done to detect the problem early, it was not covered. She never saw said letter and has been at that same address for over 30 years. Our local shop quoted her $6,985.25 and about 2 weeks to replace the engine. She called the local KIA service department and they said they could make an appointment to diagnose it January 21st (but if she brought it in, they would fit it in before then, if possible, she had no idea that it was going to be over 4 months.) She also called KIA corporation (which took multiple calls and was on hold forever) to inquire about the warranty and was told KIA would not cover it. KIA corporation said her problem is with the U.S. Postal Service if she never received the update letter. The local dealership finally diagnosed it days after her scheduled appointment and was told she would have to pay over $6,000.00 and it would be about 4 weeks to have the engine replaced. I find it unacceptable my friend is told to check back every couple of weeks. I could totally understand it if KIA said, “we’ll take care of it, but it will take some time” but to have a paying customer’s vehicle over 4 months (a third of a year) is ridiculous in my opinion. Julie is having to borrow vehicles and ut

Jan 29, 2023

On January 16, 2023, my engine suddenly died while driving in moderate traffic, with a loud banging noise. I could have been in a serious accident, or killed, due to manufacturer and dealer negligence. When I was able to restart the car, it knocked terribly, but I was (barely) able to get it the short distance back to my home, where I discovered that there was very little oil in the car, though I have it changed more frequently than recommended and check it, as well. NO WARNING LIGHT came on. On January 17, I called a local dealer, who informed me of a recall that addressed that issue, though I NEVER received a recall notice. The dealer where I bought the car confirmed that this was a safety recall issue, and therefore, since I hadn't done the recall, because I was not notified, my unsafe, barely drivable car would not be repaired by the dealer. As I received this information from 2 dealers and from the manufacturer's customer (lack of) service representative, I have not taken it to a dealer to be inspected. I since learned that the dealer had not given my correct email or address to the car company, so recall notices must have been sent to an address I haven't lived at for 6+ years. They corrected this during my call on January 17. My current car was not even in their data base until my call to the manufacturer. They had a previous car I owned listed. I am seeking restitution and assistance on this matter. These recalls do not show up on this website, either.

On 11/07/22 my car started to sputter & lose power while going up a hill, the incident only lasted a few seconds with no warning lights. Later that same day my car wouldn't start and when it finally did start it started sputtering, had no power with no warning lights, plus there was a strong smell of gas from inside the car. I had the car towed to a local shop. The shop cleaned the injectors, put a fuel treatment in the tank and replaced a bad O2 censor. 8 Days later on another hill it happened again. A hard sputtering followed by loss of power, still no warning lights but also no smell of gas. I drove it back to the same shop and after just one day the shop could not get my car to reproduce the same incident but was having difficulty starting it so they installed a new battery. 5 Days later on Thanksgiving my car sputtered hard while driving with no warning lights or smell of gas. I was barely able to get my car across 2 lanes of oncoming traffic in order to pull into a store's parking lot. I had it towed to a new shop. At this new shop it was diagnosed that the car needed new Spark Plugs, a new High Pressure Fuel Pump and new Injectors but the shop took 3 weeks to give me an estimate and so I went and retrieved my car and towed it KIA of Lynchburg, having only had the Spark Plugs replaced. Once at KIA, I was told I had a Catalytic Converter failure and it needed replacing. KIA said that it would be covered under Emissions Warranty. I had the part installed and 3 days later on New Years Eve as I was driving on the highway, I had to come to a stop due to a stop light and when I halted, the car again sputtered and I limped into a nearby parking lot and had it towed back to KIA. KIA tried to say it was Engine Failure this time but the Engineers said the High Pressure Fuel Pump should be replaced. Once installed and during a test drive by the Master Mechanic, smoke emanated from under the hood. Soon after that my Engine bay was on fire which led to a total loss.

On the day after Thanksgiving 11/26/22, I was driving this vehicle home via the interstate when it began to decelerate without any warning. I pressed to accelerator and the car began moving slower and slower. I pulled off at the nearest exit and as I was exiting the interstate, the car almost completely stalled on me, idling very rough at the red light. While waiting for the light to turn, the engine light illuminated and began flashing. I live a mile from the interstate but I was able to make it home. I was very nervous because the car jerked and shuddered like it was about to die on me in the middle of the road. The next morning, I took the car next door to my residence and has some diagnostics ran on it. I was told that the car needed new spark plugs and coils. After paying for this service, the car still ran poorly as describe above so I took the car back. I ended up having the car towed to the nearest dealership and it was determined that I needed a completely new engine. I thought to myself "well at least the powertrain is still under warranty since I am the original owner and have kept up with timely maintenance. My warranty was denied due to lack of one missing oil change invoice that was done at the dealership back in 2018 at 18,000 miles. Somehow this missing oil change was missing from the dealership's records as well. I am good at keeping up with the maintenance on my vehicle, especially one that i bought brand new back in 2017 that's still under warranty but somehow, it was still denied. I decided to pay out of pocket to get the car fixed. The cost was over $6300. I picked the car up today 01/12/23. After driving approximately 15 miles, the car began to make a ticking sound at which point the check engine light came on again. Obviously the car is not fixed.

The car will burn through almost a full 4 quarts of oil within 1000 miles. From reading online oil consumption issues are a common problem for 2014 through 2017 Kia Souls, but even some later models are having similar issues. Beyond the issue of the car burning that much oil that quick, the check oil light does not fully turn on even when the car was as the dealership put it, "Bone Dry" meaning that I as the driver had no idea that my engine could have seized up or stalled out at any moment. Also due to the fact that Kia Souls have an oil pressure driven timing chain the low oil issue extends down another level making engine stalling that much more likely. Though the most recent incendent occurred at around 94000 miles ot has been an ongoing problem for around 20000 miles.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the "low oil level" message displayed even though the engine oil had recently been changed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who serviced the engine for an oil consumption test. No additional information was available. The vehicle was retrieved but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who had replaced the engine. On another occasion while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle started to shake and vibrate with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer who diagnosed that the catalytic converter was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 80,000.

May 2021 catalytic converter failed on vehicle. It was on back order and could not be replaced until July 2021 at 106,612 miles. At that time, I had dealership and national check for any recalls or recommended repairs. There were none. November 18, 2021, while siting at a stop light, engine suddenly began to knock loudly, I pulled over immediately and had it towed to dealership, at 118,729. Engine failure due to rod bearing failure. Engine had to be replaced. National claims there was a recall repair that was not performed before November 2021. As of oil change in October 2021, there was none. Recall repair was issued first week of November 2021. I received the mailed flyer after November 21, 2021.

Bought 2017 Kia Soul from Carmax Jan 2021 w/MaxCare extended warranty. All maintenance had been done as scheduled and no problems no warning lights. At approx 79K miles, on 9-14-22 , noticed a slight knocking sound. had already sched an oil change so i asked them to check out the knocking. Tech said there was metal in my oil but it was not a big deal, just get the oil changed more often. 9-15 picked it up, the knocking seemed to go away a little drove approx 10 miles home. 9-16, started it up and the knocking and rattling were terrible engine light came on and car died. luckily i was in my driveway and not on the highway or driving in traffic, i count myself lucky that my car did not catch on fire like many others. 9-19 paid to tow to a repair shop on my warranty plan, they said it is engine rod bearing failure and engine needs to be replaced since it was covered by kia's warranty it had to go to a Kia dealership, i paid to tow again on 9-23. Kia dealership said it is a known issue with these engines that they fail all the time but kia will not cover it. they claim there is a "product improvement campaign" which is different from a recall. since i did not get a notice to install software that would tell me WHEN the engine fails they refuse to cover repairs. asked dealership for repair estimate: $8000. Local repair shop told me Kia Soul engines are on back order, even with a refurbished engine that had 70K miles on it their estimate is $13,000 I've had it less than 2 years and still owe 11K I see online class action lawsuits one was just filed in Sept 2022. Kia is selling a sub standard, defective and dangerous product. refusing to pay for repairs or compensation on something they know is going to fail then hiding behind a software update that does nothing to prevent the damage. whether or not the software is installed the engine will still fail and they know this. Kia is putting drivers at known risk then leaving us with the bills

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated while driving approximately 50-60 MPH, the vehicle emitted an abnormal sound and stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to veer to the side of the roadway. The vehicle failed to restart after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to the residence. The local dealer and an unknown dealer were notified of the failure but had not called the contact back. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty. There was no additional assistance provided. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

On or about June 20, 2022, I began an approximate 700 mile roundtrip from my home to the Oregon Sunstone Mines in SE Oregon. Approximately half way into the trip (and in the mountainous area where cell service is spotty at best and non-existant at most) my KIA Soul lost all propulsion beyond a top speed of 30MPH. With highway traffic, which consisted mostly of semi trucks and campers, trying to pass me on this two lane highway I was forced to impede the flow of traffic until I could find a place to pull to the side of the road. Once I pulled over I called my dealership to explain the problem. When I returned home I took the vehicle in to the dealership immediately. The problem was diagnosed as the Turbo which apparently got so hot it welded itself to the manifold. Since the vehicle was still under warranty the dealership kept the vehicle for repairs. It took 7 weeks to get my vehicle repaired and returned to me (at least 4 of those were without a loaner,) I embarked on another planned trip on August 15, 2022, of approximately 800 miles roundtrip. I only traveled 65 miles when the vehicle repeated its previous issue. I returned to the dealership and left the vehicle for repairs once more. As of September 6, 2022, I have been told the part is back order and the dealership is uncertain when or if it will be available. I believe this issue fits within a safety recall as it leaves drivers stranded in areas where services of any kind could be limited or unavailable and where the engine gets so hot it welds the parts together. We have been told the CEO of KIA is aware of this issue but has yet to recall the vehicles.

The contact owned a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, a cloud of black-colored smoke began to emit from the vehicle without warning. The contact attempted to stop the vehicle by depressing the brake pedal; however, the brakes failed to operate as needed. The contact used his emergency brake to stop and immediately exited the vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle, the vehicle quickly caught fire; by the time the fire department arrived, the vehicle was incinerated. A fire report and police report were both filed, and no injuries were reported. The vehicle's remains were towed to an independent tow yard. The contact went to the unknown dealer where he was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.

Purchased used Kia Soul 2017 and extended warranty in October 2020, in Niles, Michigan. Engine failed at 44,000 miles (approx. May 2022) in San Diego, CA. Towed to Kia Dealer, El Cajon, CA. Waited four weeks for new engine to be installed (Purchase of extended warranty covered cost of replaced engine). Drove vehicle for one week and then total engine failure on second engine. Towed to Kia, El Cajon, CA. Dealer provided no explanation other than "engines come wrapped to us, and we don't know if it is good or bad before we put it in the car." Totally unacceptable. Luckily, engine failure happened as it was exiting the freeway (San Diego) and was able to safely get to the curb on both occasions. Because vehicle was needed to drive from San Diego to Michigan (moving), and Dealer has had vehicle since second engine failure, Dealer agreed to buy vehicle, which we agreed on. Purchase 7-14-22. We are no longer the owners of this vehicle, but hope the situation is noted with NHSA. Thank you.

On the freeway the engine began knocking and died very shortly afterwards. Vehicle had been well maintained and there were no warning lights.

Kia was supposed to send me recall notifications. However I am the second owner of the car and kia told me on the phone that they sent my recall notifications to the original owner. I currently have unprepared recalls on my car. I made an appointment with a dealership and they had a 2 month waiting list to get my car serviced. While waiting for that 2 months to go by, while driving on the highway at 65 mph, my engine seized due to one of their recalls. I almost crashed because of that. Now I'm trying to get my engine repaired due to a manufacturers defect and kia is refusing to fix it. I have exhausted all other options and don't know what to do. But this is definitely a safety issue.

The contact owned a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal, knocking noise would emit from the engine without warning. The contact notified the dealer and they informed him that the knocking noise was normal vehicle operation. The contact then stated that while driving at 60 MPH as the knocking noise persisted, the noise grew increasing louder without warning. The contact looked out of his rearview mirror and saw a cloud of white smoke coming from underneath the vehicle. As he pulled over, he inspected the hood and saw flames encroaching towards the front driver's seat. The contact instructed his girlfriend to exit the vehicle, as he went back to retrieve a cell phone, he burned the hairs off both arms, and his right leg, as well as some hair on his head and face. The contact called the authorities while the vehicle became engulfed in flames as his children's safety seat and strollers were inside the vehicle. The children were not in the vehicle at the time of the failure. The contact also stated that part of a highway sign was burned due to the fire. The fire was extinguished by the fire department and a police report was filed. The contact sought medical treatment at the scene where paramedics checked his vital signs and the burns to his body. The contact stated that both he and his girlfriend have suffered severe mental anguish as a result of the fire. The contact has suffered from traumatic dreams and hallucinations since the failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard and deemed a total loss. The dealer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The contact then filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

My cars check engine light has come on at 87,659 miles with a p0420 code. My dealer has determined that this is a defective catalytic converter and because of the mileage it is not warrantied. In doing research the 2012-2016 Kia Soul with the 1.6 gdi engine. My car is a 2017 experiencing the same symptoms as the cars a year older. The recall campaign is 19v120000 with the NHTSA and SC 176 with KIA dating back to 04/17/2019. My cars model year being a 2017 had not been determined at that time to be effected as the mileage had not yet accumulated to the mileage of the previous years. Now that my 2017 car had reached the mileage in which previous cars where effected , it too is experiencing this defect. The safety issue lies in that when the car is driven it could overheat without any warning lights indicating that and overheating a cylinder, piston damage will occur leading to catastrophic failure that could launch a connecting rod out the side of the engine block and allow oil to spray onto hot exhaust manifold leading to a fire.I would like to see that the recall to cover added years (2017-2019) to this recall as this is a continuing safety issue. The dealership is not wanting to acknowledge and help in this matter so I am filing this complaint to document continuing failures to aid in extending model years covered.

We were driving down the highway and the engine started making sounds like something was breaking. I pulled over and then couldn’t start it again. We had to have it towed to the dealership where we were told we needed a new engine without them explaining what happened or why. There were no symptoms of failure prior to the failure itself. Engine failure while driving down the interstate is dangerous and we are lucky nothing bad happened to us.

Had my engine blow in my 2017 Kia Soul with 61,000 miles. There was no warning or issues prior

Jun 6, 2022

Engine seized and the piston rod put a hole in the engine block, spilling out all the oil. There was no warning light illuminated before the incident. There were no knocking before the incident. Kia is refusing to replace the engine. Stating I did not take it in to get the safety recall campaign. However, I never received a notice about this.

Engine failed with no warning it just stalled and started to make a loud knocking noise, loss of power. I've keep up with may car getting oil changes and the engine light never turned on.

Apr 24, 2022

My Kia stalled it had thrown a rod there wasn’t any warning the oil had been changed routinely and there wasn’t any check engine lights on

Apr 20, 2022

Engine light came on, heard a loud noise. Car is using a lot of oil, there is a rattling noise, car has no power. The piston is loose and ratling causing it to lose oil and have no power. The piston rod has possibly came off due to this. The pistons were not properly sealed by manufacturer causing this problem. This is the same problem that has happened in all the other Kia's that were recalled, but this year was not for some reason.

Apr 20, 2022

The exhaust manifold with catalytic converter cracked and almost caught on fire. This after I had at a Kia dealership to diagnose why the car was smoking. They replaced an Oxygen sensor and the valve cover gasket telling me that was all that was wrong with it. It has been less than a month and there was no signs or lights that anything was wrong.

After dropping me off school my partner began his way home. Along the way there was a poof of smoke coming from under the hood. He pulled over to the edge of the highway and as soon as he got out the car caught on fire. Then there was a second burst. The car was completely burned. We lost our lively hood. Medical supplies that were in the car. I have since contacted kia and they are not doing anything about it.

While on the freeway the engine light suddenly came on and then immediately after that the oil light. I started to pull over immediately and BOOM!! the engine blew up. This is a 2017 Kia Soul + with only 32,000 miles. I had the oil changed every 5,000 miles but not every six months as it took forever to get to the 5,000 mile mark. I have researched this happening to other Kia Souls and found out it's not uncommon however Kia would not stand behind the warranty. I had to purchase a new engine with no support from Kia.

Jan 25, 2022

I was driving normal speed of around 45mph and randomly without warning engine made very loud knocking sound. I had both my children in the vehicle when this happened. We immediately pulled over. Oil was bare but there wasn't any signs of a leak, and no prior warning lights appeared. I bought oil and added to the engine, but this did not resolve the issue. Ended up having to get vehicle towed for inspection. At this time they stated engine was blown due to bad rods. With still having owed around 14,000$ trading car in or selling was not an option, so I spent over 7000$ to get engine replaced. Not even a year later engine is now blown again same scenario. There has been engine recalls on prior years for this make / model along with 2020 and 2021 engines. This needs to be included. This is not safe and nearly caused me to get into a serious accident with another vehicle on both occasions. I have all documentation, and not only am looking to get current engine replacement completed. But I also feel I'm due reimbursement for prior engine replacement that was paid out of pocket. I cant drive this vehicle. If inspection is needed the vehicle would need to be towed, and with what I've already paid I don't feel I should have to pay for another tow either.

Engine locked up at around 69,000 miles when contacting Kia about warranty the man on the phone knew the problem when told what the vehicle was and said that it is very common. There was no warning except for knock shorty before happening standing me on the interstate on January 19th 2022.

Jan 15, 2022

Kia started knocking loudly and then seized while driving turnpike. Car had to be pushed off road. Unable to restart. It had blown a rod. Oil was dry but had not appeared to be leaking prior and no warning lights were on before failure. Now needs new engine but is not in any current recalls thought the engine seems to have been recalled in other models.

Jan 10, 2022

The number 2 compressor(if I’m wording correctly) in engine failed causing the engine to be useless. When failed the engine reduced power, sputtered and began knocking. Fumes filled the cabin. We immediately pulled over and stopped driving. A repair shop did the compression test and confirmed the failure. 126,000 miles. Less than 5 years old. Just out of warranty. Car used to commute to work in metroplex only. Oil changes every six weeks

Jan 4, 2022

It started with stalling on hills, acting sluggish, and losing oomph. This worsened over the course of approximately one month. I did a mini engine flush and changed the oil (at a reputable shop) early, thinking maybe it just needed a little love. A week later, I was driving down the freeway (Interstate 5) at night when the car stalled - all of the dashboard lights came on and the engine disengaged. I pulled off, and turned the car off. I attempted to restart it, and it would not turn over. After waiting on the side of said highway with two children for almost 3 hours, I had it towed. Ultimately, it was taken to two different service shops - one independent and one dealership - who both diagnosed the engine had essentially "exploded"; there were metal shards everywhere, no oil pressure, and lots of knocking/misfiring. The engine needs to be replaced - this has been reported to KIA, who has yet to decide if they are going to address the issue (case number 14385039). Insurance declined to address it. Police were not called.

Jan 3, 2022

There has been 3 separate times the car has stalled out for no reason. Sometimes at high speeds. I have taken it to different mechanics and they can find nothing wrong with it. It's like the engine just freezes and it will not start back for some time.

Dec 10, 2021

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The engine. Vehicle is currently at the dealership. No idea when we'll get it back, but we'd be more than willing for it to be inspected. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Any time a car engine is at risk of dying or seizing, it's a risk. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The dealer seems to know what the issue is and is jumping through Kia's hoops to try and get something done about it. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? By the dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The problem first appeared over the Fourth of July weekend of 2021. I was alerted to the fact that there was an issue because the oil light would flicker for just a split second on sharp curves. The car had somewhere in the neighborhood of 60K miles at that point. From what I'm finding out, many of the 2017 Kia Souls have the same issue with their engines that the Kias that are under recall have. Burning copious amounts of oil, stalling, running rough to the point that it feels like it's going to die at stops. Kia is quietly replacing these engines after a long cycle of testing, but they're definitely taking their time.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing an oil change. The dealer had the oil maintenance completed but continued to see the check engine warning and low oil level lights illuminated. The contact took the vehicle back to a local dealer who called the manufacturer and was instructed to have an oil consumption test completed. The contact took the vehicle back on 11/2/2021 to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact's daughter owns a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving 55 MPH, she heard abnormal knocking sounds coming from the engine and the vehicle inadvertently began to stall. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact's daughter veered to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. Then the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who provided the same diagnosis and advised the contact to tow the vehicle back to the dealer as the failure was a safety issue. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The contact was still awaiting a call back from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

On 10/23/2021, I took my vehicle for a oil change around 10:30 in the morning, afterwards I proceeded to run errands before heading to work. While on my way to work my vehicle started to make a rattling noise from the engine bay. So I decided to drive to the dealership to see if my oil change was done incorrectly on the way to dealership my vehicle rattling grew louder and started to sound like a freight train I made it to the dealership a the service advisor said I’m glad you made it and checked my vehicle after letting him know I just got a oil change I was advised oil change wasn’t done incorrectly but my vehicle is possibly among the recall for the 2.0L engines for failure my vehicle is only at 45,000 miles.

while driving on the freeway, car completely shut off. There was a safety risk as the car was driving 65 on the freeway at the time. Car has been at a indpependent car shop and has now been at the dealership for 5 weeks and was told that complete engine failure. Car was driving fine up until the moment it died. There was no sputtering, or engine light that came on for a warning. Had to very carefully get the car over to the side of the freeway.

We have been driving the vehicle all day doing some shopping and my fiance took the vehicle up to his parents house after we got home to eat dinner with them. The vehicle had driven fine day long and we had just done an oil change and tune up 2 weeks prior. There was no warning lights no knocking and no indication that there was any issue. Regardless on the way home my fiance calls me and tells me he had just he Had to push the vehicle from the middle of the road where it stopped cold turkey to get it out of traffic. We now have had to drop thousands by due to catalytic converter being faulty it caused the engine to throw a piston. Which just so happens was the exact thing that caused prior years to be recalled . The car only has 110000 and I'm the only owner I purchased it brand new and to top it off I still owe 5000 on the thing

Engined seized and had to be replaced due to an issue known to dealer. (Learned after the fact) Zero issues before it happend. Nearly caused accident. Going up a hill and all at once dead shake, lost acceleration and steering for a moment.

Sep 7, 2021

At around 50,000 miles the engine of the vehicle began knocking loudly. I immediately pulled over and had it towed to the dealership. It has been well-maintained and there were no warning lights. The engine has failed and Kia is refusing to honor the warranty, citing lack of physical records of oil change.

Sep 3, 2021

Upon startup one day, the engine began knocking. It was turned off and towed. Both an independent service center and Kia dealer have confirmed connecting rod failure, and the need for a total engine replacement. The vehicle is still available for inspection at this time. Fortunately, the issue began when the engine was turned on so the car was not moving at the time of failure, but had it begun on the highway or had a portion of the rod perforated the engine, it could have led to immediate loss of power while in motion and/or leaking oil. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to failure, and the engine had been maintained according to manufacturer guidelines. Periodically prior to this occurrence, the engine did demonstrate temporary reductions in power when accelerating, like it was hesitating to rev up beyond idle speed. However, the local Kia dealer was unable to diagnose the problem at that time (53,293 miles), and simply said to come back if it got worse, giving me the phone number for Kia Roadside Service. Although the loss of power was always temporary and infrequent, it could be a bit surprising when making a right turn into moving traffic, or a left turn across traffic because the car did not move into the traffic as fast as usual, which could have led to a collision with oncoming traffic. Fortunately it never lasted more than a second or two at a time. These symptoms returned the day prior to engine failure in greater frequency and duration. This type of failure is highly unusual for a vehicle of this age (4 years old) and mileage (67,000 miles), and Kia has denied warranty coverage, even though engine issues began before expiration of the warranty.

The car's oil pressure light started blinking while driving on the highway. The vehicle stalled at a nearby gas station, and no oil was present on the dipstick. The car was less than 1,500 miles off of an oil change, and had oil present on the dipstick before the incident. After filling the car back up with oil a knock was present, and no check engine light was shown. The car was towed to a dealer who claimed it was a rod bearing.

Engine blew while driving down the highway, gave no indication anything was wrong.

Jul 31, 2021

On Tuesday July 27 2021, we noticed that the oil light was flickering at idle on our 2017 Kia Soul. We called a dealership and they recommended that we have the car towed to their service department. We received confirmation that the car arrived at the dealership at 1.32 pm on Tuesday July 27 2021. We’d like to note that our 2017 Kia Soul had approximately 20,000 miles on it at this time. The dealership ran diagnostics on car and found nothing wrong. They also drove the car and said that they saw no indication of a problem (no flickering oil light). They said that the oil looked dark and thin. We had checked the oil the day before and it looked yellow to gold in color. We were not shown any evidence that the oil was dark, only the word of the service department. We had the car serviced and then picked it up from the dealership. 10 minutes or so after picking the car up from the dealership, on Colorado Highway 58 heading west, just outside Golden, CO, there was a loud knocking noise and the check engine and oil pressure lights starting blinking. Seconds later, the car lost power, and then stalled. My husband was able to steer it to side of the highway, where we waited more than three hours for roadside assistance from Kia before having to leave the car to get somewhere safe. The outside temperatures were 90 degrees of more and our child, who was with us, is very sensitive to high temperatures. We are waiting to hear from the dealership (Kia towing somehow managed to cancel the tow order and left the car on the side of the road all night) and do not yet know the exact nature of the engine failure but the car is undriveable. The fact that the engine stalled and died on the highway, traveling at a speed of 55 mph, is incredibly dangerous and put my husband at extreme risk for an accident or the infamous Kia engine fire. All of this happened just minutes after picking up a car that we were told had no issues.

Jul 24, 2021

Without warning indicators, my car lost power while I was driving it on a busy highway. I was able to coast onto an exit and a friend towed it to a safe area. I discovered there was no oil in the engine, even though I had had a recent oil change and no indicator on the car showed a problem with oil pressure, excessive heat, etc. I added oil and drove it a few feet to a secure location, but heard engine knocking. I called a mechanic, who inspected it and confirmed that a rod was thrown and the engine would need to be replaced. He is sourcing the replacement currently. This is a 2017 Kia Soul, 2.0 engine.

Jun 14, 2021

Beautiful morning only 72 at the time been driving for only about 15 mins. Pressed the gas and the car didn't do anything . I took my foot off and tried again this time I heard a shattering of glass? In the engine and the knocking started. I only drive it a block before I stopped and turned the vehicle off. Opened the hood checked the oil and it was empty. Nothing dripping under the car no smoke except from the area you add oil. Added oil tried again started still knocking towed It to the mechanic. I was told I have to replace or rebuild the engine. Like many I still have a loan payment and the cost of the repair is more than the cost of the note. Asked from help from insurance its not covered. Asked for help from the service department at the dealer they offered to sale me a new vehicle. Talking to an attorney now. There were no indications that there was anything wrong with the car and the engine is blown??? With correct maintenance.

Oil light came on and engine started knocking, then car shut off in the middle of the highway

Jun 7, 2021

My KIA Soul did not have any warning lights on or strange sounds/issues when I began driving on the highway on 6/5/21 with my 12 year old special needs son. A short time after we entered the highway I began to notice a strange knocking sound and it felt like the car was struggling to maintain speed. Within a few seconds I started to smell a "hot" smell and immediately pulled over to the side of a two lane highway with a very small shoulder. When I pulled over the knocking became very loud and then all of the warning lights on the dash flashed on and then the car died. We were stranded on the side of the road in the middle of no where while trucks and cars flew by at high rates of speed. It was also incredibly hot and the car was not functioning to be able to roll down windows. I was able to use roadside assistance through my insurance company and it was towed to a local repair shop. I was told that the engine was blown and my engine had "thrown" internal parts. They said the engine was completely dead and needed replaced. They also stated that they have seen this issue a lot with Kia Soul's especially 2015-2017 models. In fact the owner said as soon as he heard what the car was he knew it was going to be engine failure. I am very lucky that I was able to pull over to the small shoulder before the car died or I would have been stuck in the middle of the road right after a hill and my car would have been impossible to see stopped by drivers coming over the hill before it would have been hit. This has also caused my special needs son to become extremely panicked in the car and afraid to drive with me. After a quick Google search I was able to find complaint after complaint after complaint about this issue with the 2017 Kia Soul at around 70-80,000 miles which is exactly where I am at. I know owe a great deal of money on a car that is totaled out unless I spend over $6,000 to replace the engine. Money that I do NOT have after losing my job due to Covid.

Jun 4, 2021

I was headed to a family BBQ on memorial day in my 2017 Kia Soul that I have had about 2 years and is a certified pre-owned vehicle and did not notice any abnormalities or sounds prior to the incident. I went to partk and noticed that my check engine light popped on but thought nothing of it as my gas cap lock was broken and so I turned off the vehicle. I want to note there was no sounds, and no over heating. That evening I went to leave and the car would not turn over and thought maybe the battery was bad, but was reminded that it was replaced one week prior. So I had it towed in the next day to a mechanic and upon initial inspection he found that the engine had siezed and locked up as well as it would not turn over. I'm pretty good about personally completing oil changes, but was sharing vehicle with my ex partner and was told that the oil came up 2 quarts short upon checking, but was told that should not be enough to make the engine seize. So the mechanic replaced the starter and upon turning over the vehicle the engine began to produce a bad knock and I was told that the engine was needing to be replaced and was going to lock up again if driven. The vehicle is at 70,000 miles so is no longer covered under the factory warranty and the extended warranty may not cover it so I'm at a lose at the moment. I find it really hard to believe that after all the research I've done on this engine problem and seeing all the people with the same situation occurring that a recall has not been issued on this year.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Soul. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, he noticed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was adding a quart of oil every 546 miles. The contact stated that the oil warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the engine needing to be replaced. The engine was flushed however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was informed of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

Driver was on freeway when car lost acceleration. Driver pulled over at first exit when the dash flashed various lights and shut down. Driver attempted to start the car but was unable to do so -- there was smoking from the engine so Driver had the vehicle towed to shop. It was determined that the engine failed catastrophically and would require an engine replacement.

May 24, 2021

Without any warning, there began a clunking sound coming from under the hood of my vehicle while I operated it on the highway at highway speeds. All of a sudden, the car could not accelerate or maintain speed, and began losing speed quickly. I was lucky there was no one behind me, because the car slowed down so rapidly I almost didn’t make it to the brake down lane. My car was brought to my mechanic and it was diagnosed with a broken rod, even though there has been detailed and documented maintenance preformed in the vehicle. My mechanic said that there is no reason for the piston to have broken like that especially when there was no operator negligence.

May 21, 2021

A couple hours after getting an oil change the engine started knocking. It got so bad we couldn’t continue to safely drive it, even to get it back to the service station. Had it towed to repair shop and they have said there is a bearing rod that is messed up in the engine. There was not an accident or fire only because we stopped driving before things could get worse. Although the 2017 Kia Soul does not have any recalls it uses some of the same parts of other models that have been recalled. I have also been told this is a common issue for this model. I don’t have an estimate yet as the repair shop is still working on that. I don’t remember exact mileage and can’t check because car is at shop.

HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO OUR DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE LOWER PART OF THE ENGINE BLOWED AT 82,509 MILES. REGULAR MAINTENANCE WAS DONE AT A DEALERSHIP IN OUR TOWN. EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT WAS PURCHASED HAD WENT OUT 1000 MILES BACK AND NOW WE ARE TOLD THE REGULAR POWER TRAIN WARRANTY DOESN'T COVER BECAUSE WE WERE THE 2ND OWNER. WE WERE TOLD ABOUT $9000 TO FIX THE CAR. I HAVE CONTACTED KIA AND BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH THIS VIN# THEY CAN'T HELP. EVEN THOUGH WHEN YOU GOOGLE ENGINE PROBLEMS WITH THIS YEAR THERE ARE PLENTY OF COMPLAINT ALL OVER THE INTERNET. IF THESE CARS ARE GIVING SO MUCH TROUBLE, WHY ISN'T THERE SOMETHING THEY CAN DO. I WORK WITH 2 PEOPLE THAT OWN KIA'S OF OTHER MODELS AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THEIR MOTOR WAS REPLACE FREE OF CHARGE. I NEED HELP, PLEASE. MY KIA WAS DRIVING NORMALLY UNTIL I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, WITHOUT WARNING, THE OIL AND BATTERY LIGHT SIMULTANEOUSLY CAME ON AND THE CAR STALLED. I EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO MOVE; HOWEVER THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND A HORRIBLE KNOCKING NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE. MY VEHICLE TRAVELLED ANOTHER 100 FEET BEFORE SHUTTING OFF AGAIN. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT PRESENT. I HAD IT TOWED TO STOKES KIA IN GOOSE CREEK SC, WHERE I WAS INFORMED THAT MY ENGINE THREW A ROD, AND WOULD COST NEARLY $8,000 TO REPLACE. I'VE HAD MY KIA FOR LESS THAN A YEAR, AND CONVENIENTLY ENOUGH, MY WARRANTY JUST EXPIRED BY A FEW HUNDRED MILES, AND I STILL OWE $9,000 ON THE LOAN I TOOK OUT FOR THE CAR. THEN A FEW DAYS AGO MY ENGINE BLEW WITH NO WARNING SIGN, MY OIL AND COOLANT WERE EMPTY EVEN THOUGH I KNOW ALL MY FLUIDS WERE FINE. I DO COMMUTE TO WORK AND I KNOW THAT'S HARDER ON A VEHICLE BUT NONE OF MY OTHER CARS WHICH HAVE ALL BEEN OLDER MODELS HAVE EVER GIVEN ME AN ISSUE LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO ME WITH THIS ONE. SEEMS ODD IF ANYTHING. WHEN I WAS STARTING UP MY CAR LEAVING WORK IT JUST RANDOMLY STARTED WITH THE NOISES AND THEN THE ENTIRE WAY HOME IT GOT WORSE I DID NOT DRIVE IT AFTER THAT I TRIED EVERYTHING TO GET IT TO THE DEALERSHIP HOWEVER IT HAD TO BE TOWED THERE. BOUGHT A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2017 KIA SOUL IN 2019 AND 1 YEAR AFTER USAGE THERE WAS AN ENGINE FAILURE FOR WHAT IT APPEARED TO BE NO REASON. I'VE READ THAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING AROUND 60,000 MILES AND CONVENIENTLY ENOUGH OUR VEHICLE HAD 65000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF THE ENGINE FAILURE. THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE AND THEN SMOKE WHEN IT FAILED. IT CAUSED A CRACK TO GO UP THROUGH THE SHORT BLOCK AND LUCKILY WASN'T ABLE TO DAMAGE THE VALVE TRAIN. I'VE TRIED CONTACTING EVERY KIA DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THEY WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM BUT I GOT THE SENSE THEY DIDN'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE COSTLY HEADACHE, ESPECIALLY DUE TO THE FACT I WAS BARELY OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY THRESHOLD OF 60000 MILES. I FEEL LIKE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THESE ENGINES ESPECIALLY IF THEY IS AN ONGOING LAWSUIT AGAINST OTHER KIA MODELS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS.

PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY TO LOOK TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED & OIL WAS EVERYWHERE. LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE CAR AFTER IT COOLED OFF & THE WAS A HOLE IN THE MOTOR. A ROD SHOT THROUGH. THE CAR HAS 97,000 MILES ON IT. I REFUSE BECAUSE THIS ENGINE HAS A WARRANTY AND IS 6 MOS. OLD. THEY CHANGE THE OIL, INJECT DYE INTO IT AND TELL ME TO COME BACK IN 500 MILES. I GO BACK ON TUESDAY AND THEY TELL ME THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR IS DRY ROTTED AND LEAKING OIL AND IT WILL BE 400.00. WHY WAS IT NOT CHANGED? WHEN CRANKING MY VEHICLE ON MONDAY EVENING, 12/14, APPROXIMATELY 40 DEGREES OUTSIDE, I NOTICED A NOISE AFTER INITIAL STARTUP THAT SOUNDS LIKE WHEN YOU PUT A CARD OR A SODA CAN ON THE TIRE OF YOUR BIKE. THE NOISE DIDN'T CONTINUE SO I DROVE IT HOME, APPROXIMATELY 17 MILES FROM WHERE IT WAS PARKED INITIALLY. I DIDN'T HEAR IT ON THE DRIVE HOME, UNTIL I ROLLED DOWN MY WINDOW SLIGHTLY AS I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT, AND IT WAS MAKING THE SAME TICKING NOISE, BUT MUCH LOUDER, AND ESPECIALLY WHEN I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY FIANCE, AND WHEN I PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY HE IMMEDIATELY REQUESTED I TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. PULLED THE OIL STICK, AND NOTED THAT IT WAS ALMOST BONE DRY. WHICH IS CRAZY BECAUSE WE PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON MY CAR, AS IT'S THE DAILY DRIVER FOR MY 7 YEAR OLD AND MYSELF. THE LAST OIL CHANGE WAS ROUGHLY END OF SEPTEMBER. HE PUT OIL IN IT, AND HOPED IT WOULD STOP THE NOISE, BUT IT DIDN'T. AFTER HAVING IT EVALUATED, WE'RE TOLD IT WILL NEED A NEW MOTOR. I CALLED KIA, AND EVEN THOUGH THE PREVIOUS YEAR MODELS 2012-16 ALL HAVE THESE SAME EXACT ISSUES, THEY WILL NOT FIX THE MOTOR, SINCE THERE ISN'T A RECALL ISSUED FOR MY YEAR MODEL YET. THIS IS SO CONCERNING, AS MY CAR IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD, AND IT HAS BEEN TAKEN SUCH GOOD CARE OF.

WHILE AT WORK, DRIVING, AND IN ACCELERATION, THE ENGINE WOULD START KNOCKING. ON MY WAY HOME, THE KNOCKING GOT LOUDER. HALF WAY HOME, THE ENGINE STALLED OUT ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND I HAD TO COAST THE VEHICLE THROUGH EN EXIT RAMP TO STOP ON A SERVICE ROAD. FLUID WAS FOUND LEAKING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. HAVING PUT THE VEHICLE IN A SERVICE SHOP, THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE ROD BLEW A HOLE STRAIGHT THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK. SAID IT WAS MORE LIKELY FROM THE ENGINE OVERHEATING, BUT WOULD NOT BE OFFICIALLY CERTAIN. MECHANIC LATER PULLED ME ASIDE AND INFORMED ME THAT KIA HAD BEEN HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR ENGINES BLOWING. ALSO, THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT KEPT FLASHING SO HE CHECKED THE OIL. HE HAD THE OIL PREVIOUSLY CHANGED ON AUG 29, 2020. THE DIPSTICK CAME UP EMPTY. HE ADDED OIL AND WHEN HE DROVE IT TO FIRESTONE AUTO REPAIR SHOP, THE OIL LIGHT FLASHED EVERY TIME THE CAR STOPPED AT A LIGHT. FIRESTONE FIRST SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. HE LEFT THERE ONLY TO FIND IT DOING THE SAME THING. IT STALLED WHEN HE WAS MAKING A TURN ONTO A BUSY ROAD. HE TOOK IT BACK TO FIRESTONE WHERE THE DIAGNOSTIC FINALLY SAID IT WAS A BAD OIL PUMP. THEY SUGGESTED TO HIM TO TAKE IT TO KIA BECAUSE IT WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE. FORD/KIA SAID THE ENGINE IS BLOWN AND IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE HE IS THE SECOND OWNER. I DROVE DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET TO A GAS STATION AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL, BUT NO OIL REGISTERED ON THE DIP STICK. I ADDED 2 QUARTS OF OIL, IT NOW REGISTERED ALMOST FULL AND DROVE IT HOME (APPROX. 1 MILE). WHEN I GOT HOME I NOTICED THE ENGINE WAS KNOCKING. THE NEXT DAY I CHANGED THE OIL ADDING ONE QUART OF LUCAS OIL ADDITIVE. THE KNOCKING DID NOT GO AWAY AND I NOW NOTICED STEAM COMING OUT OF MY TAIL PIPE WHEN I WAS LETTING THE ENGINE WARM UP. I LEFT MY CAR PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR FEAR OF DOING FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. A FEW MONTHS LATER (WHEN I WAS IN A BETTER FINANCIAL POSITION), I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO KIA OF RIVERSIDE, WHERE THEY SAID THEY WOULD START A CASE WITH KIA MOTORS TO RUN TESTS TO DETERMINE IF THEY WOULD COVER THE FAILURE. WE ARE CURRENTLY TRYING TO GET THE LOCAL DEALER TO WORK ON THE VEHICLE AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE A MINIMUM FEE OF 1500-1600 TO TEAR THE MOTOR DOWN AND COMPLETE AN INVESTIGATION INTO WHY THE MOTOR FAILED. WE HAVE AN AFTERMARKET WARRANTY PROGRAM AND THEY ARE TRYING TO FIND A WAY NOT TO PAY FOR ANY CLAIM ON THIS ISSUE. OUR DILEMMA IS ONGOING AT THE TIME OF THIS COMPLAINT.

WHEN PLACED IN DRIVE, AND GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED THE CAR JERKS FORWARD AND BACK AND WILL NOT ACCELERATE. IT SHAKES THE WHOLE CAR.. DOES IT IF CAR IS COLD OR HOT BUT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE WHEN CAR IS NOT FULL HOT. UNSAFE WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC.

AT 75K MILES THE ENGINE FAILED ON MY 2017 KIA SOUL. SPECIFICALLY, IT THREW A ROD. THE CAR WAS SOLD TO ME AS A CERTIFIED USED CAR, THAT BEING THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I TOOK THE CAR INTO GOSSETT KIA IN MEMPHIS, WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR FOR AN OIL CHANGE. I WAS CALLED LATER AND TOLD THE ENGINE WAS KNOCKING. THE SERVICE WRITER TOLD ME, "DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THIS. IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2016 AMD 2017 KIA SOUL AND YOUR CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY." KIA TOLD ME THE CAR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE I CHOSE TO DRIVE FOR A RIDE SHARE COMPANY AND THAT VOIDED THE WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM IS THEY SOLD ME A CAR AS CERTIFIED WHEN THEY KNEW ABOUT THE ENGINE FAILURE ISSUE.

PURCHASED THIS CAR USED WITH 16K MILES IN SEPT 2018. STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AND WHEN TRYING TO PULL OUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE GAS PEDAL. ENGINE REMAINED AT AN IDLE EVEN AFTER FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES. ALMOST GOT HIT!! I RECYCLED THE KEY SEVERAL TIMES AND FINALLY IT WORKED. I TOOK TO THE DEALER AND GOT THE " NO PROBLEM FOUND " NOW I EXPERIENCE A ROUGH IDLE AND A STRANGE FEELING IN THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN BRAKING. TODAY I STARTED THE CAR AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT GO OVER 3000 RPMS. CYCLED THE KEY AND IT WAS OK. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR FOR FEAR IT MAY KILL ME! PLEASE HELP.

I BEGAN TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY ENGINE IN SEPTEMBER OF 2018, MY CAR WOULD JUST TURN OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE STREETS. NOTE THAT WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN I ONLY HAD 29,800 MILES ON IT. I TOOK IT INTO A DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED MY ENGINE IN WHICH I DID NOT GET MY VEHICLE BACK UNTIL JANUARY 2019. EVERY TIME I WOULD GET MY VEHICLE BACK THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD BE ON, AND THE CAR WOULD DRIVE TERRIBLY. IN THE COURSE OF 4-5 MONTHS I HAD A BAD VEHICLE RETURNED TO ME 3 TIMES. I'VE HAD MY VEHICLE FOR A WEEK AND I STILL DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT AND WHEN I REACH THE SPEED LIMIT OF 40 MPH IT BEGINS TO SHAKE. LASTLY, WHEN I PRESS ON THE BREAKS I COULD FEEL THAT MY FOOT BEGINS TO TREMOR/SHAKE AS IF I'M IN A GO-KART I STILL DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS. I HAVE ATTACHED TWO PHOTOS. ONE OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THE DAY THE DEALERSHIP RETURNED MY VEHICLE, AND TWO OF THE NEW ENGINE.

MY ENGINE SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS STOPPED AT A RAILROAD CROSSING, ON AN INCLINE. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHEN IT HAPPENED. ONCE THE TRAIN PASSED, I LET MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF WITHOUT A WARNING OR INDICATION. THE CAR PROCEEDED TO ROLL BACKWARDS INTO TRAFFIC. I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON, PUT THE CAR IN PARK, AND TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. IT TOOK A MINUTE OR SO BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED 3 DAYS LATER - I WAS JUST ABOUT TO MAKE MY TURN OUT OF A PARKING LOT INTO A MAJOR STREET. I MADE A STOP TO MAKE SURE THE ROAD WAS CLEAR. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND HIT THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. I HAD TO PUT MY CAR IN PARK TO RESTART THE ENGINE AGAIN.

I PURCHASED MY 2017 KIA SOULS BASE MODEL ON JUN 28 THIS YEAR FROM QUIRK KIA IN BRAINTREE, MA. AFTER JUST 2 WEEKS THIS ISSUE HAPPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME. I WAS AT A GAS STATION GASSING UP THE CAR, ONCE I WAS DONE, I TURNED THE CAR ON, PUT IT IN DRIVE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE ' I WAS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AND NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE SHIFTER IN PARK, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND ON AGAIN AND THE CAR STARTED TO MOVE AGAIN. ON JULY 26 SAME ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN AND IT ALSO HAPPENED RIGHT AFTER I GASSED UP THE CAR. ON SEPTEMBER 15TH WHILE I WAS WORKING AS UBER DRIVER THIS ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I STOPPED AT RED LIGHT, AFTER FEW MINUTES I STARTED DRIVING BUT JUST AFTER 50-60 YARDS I COMPLETELY LOST ACCELERATION. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND TO GAS PEDAL, WHILE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AND I HAD ELECTRICITY. I HAD TO COMPLETELY STOP THE CAR, TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND ON AGAIN AND THE CAR STARTED TO WORK AGAIN. AFTER THIS INCIDENT I CALLED KIA USA (MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH) AND WAS ADVISED BY CUSTOMER SUPPORT TO BRING THE CARD IMMEDIATELY TO KIA DEALERSHIP. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND A KIA SOUL FORUM WHERE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. THIS IS THE SITE: HTTP://WWW.KIASOULFORUMS.COM/10-SOUL-PROBLEMS/13994-2013-SOUL-BASE-ACCELERATION-PROBLEM.HTML ATTACHED ARE PICTURES FROM THIS FORUM FROM FOUR DIFFERENT PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. AS IT APPEARS, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN HAPPENING ON KIA VEHICLES FOR A WHILE. WHILE NO ONE MENTIONED WHETHER THEY WERE ABLE TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE OR NOT, MANY HAVE COMPLAINED ON THIS FORUM THAT KIA DEALERSHIPS REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. OCTOBER 6TH - DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THEY CAN'T REPLICATE THE ISSUE AND ARE RELEASING THE CAR BACK TO ME. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE.
