THE "SPIRAL CASSETTE" ON MY 2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY HAS FAILED THREE TIMES (ABOUT EVERY 30,000 MILES OR TWO YEARS). WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE SRS LIGHT COMES ON AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT MY AIRBAG SRS IS NOT FUNCTIONAL. I HAVE HAD IT REPLACED AND NOT "TESTED" THE AIR BAG. IT HAS NOW FAILED AGAIN. THIS SEEMS TO BE A DEFECTIVE DESIGN OR CONSISTENTLY DEFECTIVE MANUFACTURING WHICH LEADS TO FAILURE OF A VITAL SAFETY SYSTEM. I WOULD LIKE YOU TO INVESTIGATE TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF THIS PROBLEM AND WHETHER OR NOT A RECALL IS NECESSARY. I BELIEVE THE PART IS "YRC100350 ROTARY CASSETTE" *JB

PRIVATELY RETAINED MECHANIC IDENTIFIED THE ECU AS THE PROBLEM AND ALSO LOCATED A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE RECALL WAS NOT VALID AND THAT "THEY PUT THESE ON THE INTERNET ALL THE TIME." LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA WAS CONTACTED VIA E-MAIL AND TELEPHONE MESSAGE AND HAS NOT RESPONDED. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND THE ONLY RECALL I HAVE RECIEVED CONCERNED THE ACCELLERATION CABLE SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2000. APPARENTLY THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FINDS NHTSA RECALLS AS "THINGS ON THE INTERNET" NOT REQUIRING ANY ACTION. THIS IS PROBABLY TO BE EXPECTED FROM OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP. WHILE CHANGING LANES ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SWAY FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE STEERING. THE VEHICLE TRAVELED AWAY FROM THE PAVEMENT, ONTO THE RIGHT UNIMPROVED SHOULDER, AND COLLIDED WITH A LARGE TREE. THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY BURST INTO FLAMES AND CONTINUED TO BURN UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. MOST OF THE VEHICLE AND ALL PERSONAL BELONGINGS WERE LOST IN THE FIRE.*AK
