my brake light and my emergency brake light stays on and they blink constantly while the engine is turned on. they have been like that for at least a year. both my brakes and the emergency brake both work but I cant get the lights to go out.

from my service mechanic... "Rear brakes at 8mm/8mm on the right side, but 4mm/6mm on the left. These brakes were replaced 1500 miles ago and should not be showing this kind of wear. Examined brake pads, found evidence of overheating. Scanned vehicle, confirmed no codes from Electronic Parking Brake. Actuated parking brake and confirmed it is engaging and releasing as commanded. Found a Technical Service Bulletin related to parking brake drag on this vehicle. The brake pad damage pattern is consistent with what we observed today. Mazda recommends replacing the affect caliper(s) with an updated version to address this issue. Confirmed by lot number that current calipers are older version. TSB attached. Recommend replacing calipers and rear brake materials."

After having brakes serviced brake lights continue to come on. After research from many other complaints they are saying it’s the emergency parking that needs replaced? We shouldn’t have to replace this every time the brakes are replaced.

This vehicle has rear Electric Parking Brakes. Some time it's works sometimes it doesn't release the rear passenger side breaks. The rear passenger side brakes make to much noise and brakes pads destroy rotor earlier then others. Mazda dealers doesn't says to much on that and ask for above $1000 repair to change faulty EPB clipper. But my research says many people have same complaints with this model by mazda built-in around 2016. This is safety issue, if I replace brake pads every 4 or 5 months it cost me money. If I don't I cost me my safety.

2nd time in 40k miles right rear caliper locked up mechanic suggest getting both left and right replaced figuring if one failed its only a matter of time, calipers should last 10 years and 2nd replacement in 4 years, this is a bad safety issue

I buy this car 2 years ago and 3 months later is starting having problem with rear passenger brakes I took the car to the mechanic and he change disc and brakes pads. A couple months later is starting having the same problem in the same area but this time is was smell burn coming through the wheel I'm stop the car to check was is going on when I check the brakes it was very very hot. I take the car to the mechanic and he told me the EPB is bad he changed everything disc, brakes pads,caliper and EPB motor. He said try to don't used the EPB too much or I'm going to see you again with same problem 😂... So I'm stop to use the EPB for long time. One day I put my car in the carwash one guy hit the EPB when he's done with the car Im get inside I turn on the car and the brake warning light is starting flashing I say fu** not again and yes EPB get stock. This is make me crazy the EPB need to be fix from the dealer please make this common problem a recalls to getting fix for those people got the same issue.

Brakes make a jerking sound decelerating from 40 miles an hour or from coming off a freeway ramp. After two trips to the dealership, the jerking sound still persists, the dealership had mentioned it was either the ball bearings or the brake pads were worn out, but somehow the noise is still there. The vehicle still makes stop safely, but we feel that if this is not resolved that this may become a greater safety issue down the road.

Left rear outer brake pad was worn down to the backing plate. After repairs were made, it started smoking while driving. We thought it was going to catch on file. I found a Mazda service bulletin - 04-005/16 - regarding a defective brake control module that controls the electronic parking brake. Why wasn't this a safety recall?

Last month, my vehicle suddenly applied the electronic parking brake (EPB) while I was driving. The EPB & related warning lights illuminated & would not release until the vehicle was turned off. After turning off the vehicle, the EPB motor could be heard applying the brake to the rear wheels. When the car was restarted, the EPB would remain off for a period of time but would then suddenly reapply. I took my vehicle to a Mazda dealer & they determined the calipers & EPB motor had failed due to my vehicle not being placed in service mode by the brake servicer. This explanation makes no sense because the brakes were replaced over a year ago (& not since) with thousands of miles being driven since then without this issue arising. I also conducted my own research & found that Mazda has issued at least 3 separate technical service bulletins (TSB) on this issue. The first two recommended replacement of the EPB switch & the third determined that defective calipers were the cause and should be replaced. I asked the dealer to save my calipers & confirmed that they are part of the defective batch noted in this TSB. I have contacted Mazda (including their legal counsel) & they are unwilling to provide any explanation or engage in any sort of investigation. As former legal counsel for an automotive company, I believe this presents a serious safety issue for consumers based upon the fact that a parking brake could randomly engage while driving & cause sudden loss of speed/control. Thankfully, this did not result in harm to my family, myself or others. I am certain that this issue is affecting others based on chatboard discussions I have found online related to this topic (which helped me find the TSB). I am concerned that Mazda may have attempted to undertake a silent recall via this TSB where in warranty customers are covered & out of warranty customers are given the 'service mode' explanation to justify their responsibility. This should have been handled as a recall by Mazda.

Parked by the curb at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport. I put the car in Park and left the car idling with the air-conditioning running.as it was 95 degrees and about 100 at around 8:00 AM. There was a shuttle van parked by the curb about 11 feet in front of me. I had to exit my car to talk to the driver in the car behind me. I walked to the car behind me and started talking to the driver. I glanced back at my Mazda CX5 and it started rolling forward. I ran up to the car and got the door open and stepped on the brake. The brakes did not engage. I repeated stepping on the brake several times and the car would not stop. I got in the drivers seat to shift the car into reverse and keep my foot on the brake pedal. The car would not shift into reverse. and by this time the Mazda had pinned to the shuttle van a lady who was trying to unload her luggage. On the sixth attempt to shift into reverse the shifter finally moved into reverse and by standers came to the aid of the lady that had been pinned to the shuttle van. Airport security and the Broward County police took the statements. The lady retrieving her baggage declined medical attention. When I checked to see what the police were reporting they did not acknowledge that I was attempting to stop a runaway vehicle. The report said that I failed to put the car in park and left it in drive. It is not possible to get out of a car that is idling and in gear without the car moving forward or backward before you can even get all the way out of the car. This incident happened about mid July in 2017. Near the end of June this year while in my driveway I left the car idling and in park, exited the car walking to the rear of the car and it dropped into reverse. Got back in the car and shut off the engine. July 2017 the local Mazda dealer inspected the vehicle and could not find as problem. Not unlikely with an intermittent electrical anomaly. There were no prior warning lamps in either incident.

* The Emergency Brake Module failed and it is available for inspection upon request. * The system failed and randomly turned on the parking break while I was actively driving and paused to make a left of a highway exit ramp. The parking break remained on for ~40 mins while I caused a significant disturbance to the traffic and safety of other around me as the exit ramp began to back up while awaiting a tow truck. Since it was the emergency break we were not able to put the car in neutral and push it out of the way. * Yes - Arlington Autocare confirmed the issue and has since replaced the part. * No there were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the parts failure. After the issue was identified I searched online and this seems to be an incredibly common issue with the Mazda 2016 CX5. Multiple other reports exist on line about the failure of this park and the rear breaking system. It is very negligent that a recall has not been filed given the pervasiveness of the issue and the seriousness of the safety concern should the part inevitably fail.

Ebrake engages on its own when starting up the vehicle. You are unable to turn the ebrake off without restarting the car. The repair shop stated it is a problem with the computer module. A quick search of the internet shows that this is a common issue with this year's make and model. Luckily, the ebrake has not engaged itself yet while driving the vehicle.

I WAS DRIVING AND WAS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN SO I PRESSED BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP. WHILE I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY REVVED UP AND LURCHED FORWARD. I HAD TO SWITCH THE CAR TO NEUTRAL GEAR TO STOP AND THEN BACK UP OUT OF THE WAY OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

DURING ROUTINE SERVICING THE MAZDA TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED ABNORMAL BRAKE WEAR. MAZDA DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDS REPLACEMENT OF BOTH REAR CALIPERS. MAZDA CORPORATION IS UNWILLING TO HELP. IT APPEARS MAXDA CX-5 IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR EPB AND IS UNWILLING TO ADMIT IT.

THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE ON MY 2016 MAZDA CX-5 STARTED ACTING STRANGE A FEW WEEKS AGO. AT FIRST IT WOULD NOT DISENGAGE AFTER STARTING THE CAR, BUT WOULD DO SO AFTER A COUPLE OF RESTARTS. THEN IT STARTED ENGAGING SLIGHTLY WHILE DRIVING, WITH NO INDICATIONS. STOPPING AND RESTARTING THE ENGINE A FEW TIMES WOULD USUALLY RELEASE IT. A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO THIS HAPPENED AND THE BRAKE WOULD NOT DISENGAGE AFTER SEVERAL RESTARTS AND I WAS GOING TO CALL A TOW TRUCK. IT DISENGAGED AFTER ABOUT 30 MINUTES. AS I UNDERSTAND IT MAZDA KNOWS THAT THE REAR CALIPER IS DEFECTIVE (SEE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN R052/16C). THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM BECAUSE THIS IS NOT SAFE.

WITHIN THE LAST MONTH THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE SELF ENGAGED 3 TIMES WHEN I STARTED MY CAR I NOTICED THE BRAKE LIGHT ON. I NEVER ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE WHEN PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. I WAS ABLE TO DISENGAGE IT TWICE, BUT THE LAST TIME IT WOULD NOT DISENGAGE. I FOLLOWED ALL THE STEPS LISTED IN THE CAR MANUAL, BUT NOTHING WORKED. I HAD TO DRIVE WITH THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE ON TO THE DEALERSHIP. UPON INSPECTION THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED IT WAS AN INTERNAL ELECTRONIC FAILURE.

MY TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT WAS TRIGGERED ON WHEN I DROVE THE CAR FOR ABOUT 40 MPH. I STOPPED AT A PARKING LOT AND I NOTICED THE REAR RIGHT WHEEL WAS LITERALLY SMOKING. LATER I WENT TO A LOCAL SHOP AND I WAS TOLD THE BRAKE WAS OVERHEATED ON THE REAR RIGHT SIDE. MY LOCAL SHOP REPLACED THE ROTOR AND PADS, HOWEVER, THE OVERHEAT PROBLEM KEPT SHOWING UP ON THAT RIGHT REAR SIDE. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE PARKING BRAKE DRAGGING FOR 2016 CX5. SO I STOPPED USING THE PARKING BRAKE AND THE OVERHEATING PROBLEM WAS GONE. HOWEVER, THE PARKING BRAKE IS STILL DEFECTIVE AND CAUSES OVERHEAT IF USED.

WHILE DRIVING APPROX. 40 MPH ON A STATE ROAD, MY TPMS WARNING LIGHT WENT ON. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A SIMPLE TIRE PRESSURE ISSUE, BUT THEN I BEGAN TO SMELL BURNING. I STOPPED MY CAR AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM MY REAR RIGHT (PASSENGER SIDE) WHEEL. I PROMPTLY BROUGHT THE CAR TO A 3RD PARTY MECHANIC AND THEY INFORMED ME THE CALIPER REMAINED ENGAGED AND MY ROTORS WERE OVERHEATING. THEY TRIED CONTACTING MAZDA DEALERSHIPS AND 3RD PARTY SOURCES FOR EITHER NEW OR REBUILT CALIPER BUT THE PART WAS OUT OF STOCK AND ON BACKORDER WITH NO ESTIMATED DATE WHEN IT WOULD BE REPLENISHED. MY CAR IS STILL UNREPAIRED AND I CANNOT DRIVE IT AS THE EXCESSIVE HEATING OF THE ROTOR COULD DISABLE MY BRAKING ABILITY. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE WITH OTHER CX-5 MODELS.

DRIVING THE VEHICLE CAUSES THE REAR BRAKES TO GET HOT. THIS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES IN SEPTEMBER (AROUND 40,000 MILES), AND I TOOK MY CX-5 IN FOR SERVICE. THE TECHNICIANS DID NOT FIND ANYTHING OPERATING INCORRECTLY, LUBRICATED THE BRAKES, AND RETURNED MY VEHICLE. WHEN I GOT MY STATE SAFETY INSPECTION, I WAS INFORMED THAT MY REAR BRAKES WERE PASSABLE, BUT PRETTY CRUMMY LOOKING BECAUSE OF HEAT DAMAGE. BECAUSE WE WERE LOCKED DOWN (DUE TO CORONAVIRUS) I WAITED A BIT AND JUST RECENTLY HAD THEM REPLACED. NOW THAT MY REAR BRAKES HAVE NEW PADS AND ROTORS, THE REAR BRAKE ISSUE IS HAPPENING AGAIN, SPECIFICALLY ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE THIS TIME. AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE IN THE REAR AND THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER AGAIN, AND THEY TOLD ME THE REAR BRAKES ARE OPERATING NORMALLY. HOWEVER, ON MY DRIVE HOME (18 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY), THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING AGAIN, SO I KNEW THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED. I CHECKED THE TEMPERATURE OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR BRAKE ROTOR, AND IT WAS OVER 400 DEGREES (THE OTHER ROTORS WERE AROUND 150, SEE PAGE 9 OF ATTACHED DOCUMENT). I CONTACTED MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT THIS ISSUE, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THE DEALER CAN'T DETECT AN ISSUE, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. MAZDA HAS ISSUED TSBS RELATED TO THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE FOR MY VEHICLE, BUT I BELIEVE THEIR DIAGNOSTIC STEPS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT TO DETECT ALL CASES OF THE ISSUE. THEIR DIAGNOSTIC STEPS ARE ALL RELATED TO LOW-SPEED DRIVING, BUT MY ISSUE ONLY PRESENTS ITSELF AFTER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD. *TR

MY CAR WAS PARKED IN A LEVEL GARAGE OVERNIGHT AND THE NEXT DAY AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) LIGHT STARTED FLASHING ON BOTH THE DASHBOARD AND THE EPB CONTROL LEVER AND THE BRAKE LIGHT WARNING LIGHT WAS LIT. IT SEEMED TO BE DRIVING FINE, AND I NEVER ENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE SO I THOUGHT I MAY HAVE DONE SO ACCIDENTALLY. I PULLED OVER, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TRIED TO DISENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE BUT IT JUST KEPT FLASHING. I TOOK IT TO MY GARDEN CITY MAZDA DEALERSHIP TO SERVICE IT FOR THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS RECALL, SO I TOLD THEM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS WELL. WHILE WAITING FOR THE APPOINTMENT, SOME DAYS THE LIGHTS STAYED OFF AND SOME DAYS CAME ON. AT THE DEALERSHIP, I PAID $140 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PARKING BRAKE MODULE SHORTED OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AT A COST OF OVER $900. I ASKED IF THERE WAS A CHANCE MY BRAKES WOULD MALFUNCTION OR IF I COULD DRIVE THE CAR SAFELY AND WAS TOLD THE BRAKES WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED, SO DUE TO THE COST I OPTED TO NOT HAVE IT REPAIRED. THIS CAR IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS SAFETY DEFECT. MY ODOMETER READS APPROXIMATELY 55,000. NOW I HAVE TO DRIVE AROUND WITH A VERY DISTRACTING RED PARKING BRAKE WARNING LIGHT FLASHING ON AND OFF CONSTANTLY AND MY BRAKE WARNING LIGHT LIT. THIS DISTRACTION IS AN ADDITIONAL SAFETY CONCERN. I'M NOT SURE IF GARDEN CITY MAZDA REPORTED THIS ISSUE TO THE MANUFACTURER, BUT APPARENTLY MAZDA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BUT NO SAFETY RECALL HAS BEEN MADE. WHY? I FEEL AT THE VERY LEAST, EVEN IF NO SAFETY RECALL, THAT CUSTOMERS SHOULD HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED AT NO COST AS SOON AS THEY REPORT IT TO MAZDA. THE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) HAS MALFUNCTIONED. THE CAR WAS PARKED IN A LEVEL GARAGE OVERNIGHT, WITHOUT THE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED. SBS INADVERTENT ACTIVATION WHILE PULLING INTO A CLEAR PARKING STALL

AT 15K MILES THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR BRAKE CALIPER FAILED, CAUSING THE BRAKE TO DRAG AND OVERHEAT DURING A 400 MILE HOLIDAY ROADTRIP. BY THE TIME THE PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED BY THE ELDERLY OWNERS, THE REAR PADS WERE WORN DOWN TO THE BACKING PLATES AND THE ROTORS WERE HEAVILY SCORED. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED OR OTHER INDICATION ALERTING THE DRIVER TO THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE REAR CALIPERS AND ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB) GIVEN THE TSBS THAT MAZDA HAS PUBLISHED ON THE MATTER AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE AND WITH THE NHTSA. MAZDA REPLACED THE FAILED DRIVER'S SIDE CALIPER UNDER WARRANTY BUT DECLINED TO COVER THE DAMAGED PADS AND ROTOR CAUSED BY THEIR DEFECTIVE ASSEMBLY EVEN AFTER ESCALTING THE ISSUE TO CORPORATE. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL BUT MAZDA WOULD RATHER JEOPARDIZE THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMER (BY NOT PROACTIVELY REPLACING THE PASSENGER SIDE CALIPER) AND CHARGE THEM $500 FOR A BRAKE JOB TO CORRECT COLLATERAL DAMAGE CAUSED BY THEIR DEFECTIVE PARTS. VEHICLE WOULD START NORMALLY AT PUSH OF START BUTTON BUT THE E-BRAKE LIGHT WOULD STAY ON IN THE FLASHING MODE. TURN ENGINE OFF/RESTARTING WOULD RESOLVE THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY JUST TO RETURN TO THE SAME ISSUE AT RANDOM PARKING LOCATIONS. DEALERSHIP SUGGESTED A REPLACEMENT BATTERY MAIN 12 VOLT BATTERY FOR $185+TAX+INSTALLATION. BATTERY REPLACEMENT SUGGESTED BASED ON A CLAIM OF LOW VOLTAGE MEASURED AT THE E-BRAKE SWITCH LOCATED ON THE CENTER CONSOLE. THERE WAS NO OTHER SOLUTIONS PROVIDED BY THE DEALERSHIP FOR FURTHER TESTING/ISOLATION OF ISSUE PRIIR MAKING A PAYMENT, TO INCLUDE CONFIRMATION THAT IN FACT THE BATTERY IS THE CULPRIT. UTILIZING AN ALTERNATE/TEST BATTERY COULD BE A TEMPORARY TESTING SOLUTION. PAYMENTS WERE MADE AS REQUESTED AND THE ISSUE OF THE FLASHING E-BRAKE LIGHT FLASHING/E-BRAKE NOT DISENGAGING IS LESS APPARENT WITH 2 INCIDENTS 1 MONTH AFTER BATTERY REPLACEMENT. INCIDENTS OBSERVED WHILE IN COVERED/UNCOVERED PARKING SCENARIOS, OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE OSCILLATE FROM 75 TO 92 F. VEHICLE REAR BRAKES WERE REPLACED UNDER 5000 MILES BY DEALERSHIP DUE TO NOISES AND PREMATURE WEAR. I TOOK IN AGAIN TO GET LOOKED AT AND THE REAR PASSENGER PADS WERE COMPLETELY WORN DOWN, WHILE THE REAR DRIVER PADS BARELY HAD ANY WEAR TO THEM. I WAS TOLD IT WAS MOST LIKELY A MALFUNCTIONING CALIBER. MAZDA RAN MY VIN AND STATED THAT IS CAME UP AS A TSB BUT STATED THAT I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT. CAR IS A 2016.5 MAZDA CX-5 WITH APPROX 12,000 MILES. CAR BEGAN MAKING A GRINDING SOUND WHILE DRIVING; MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH MAZDA TO LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM. DROPPED OFF THE VEHICLE MAY 11, 2018, PICKED UP THE VEHICLE MAY 12, 2018. SERVICE TECHNICIAN STATED IT WAS THE VEHICLES BRAKES, WHICH ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, AND WOULD NEED TO BE PAID OUT OF POCKET. I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR I NEEDED NEW BRAKES DUE TO THE LOW MILEAGE AND AGE OF THE VEHICLE SO I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY PERSONAL MECHANIC, TO GET A SECOND OPINION, BEFORE HAVING ANY EXPENSIVE REPAIRS PERFORMED BY MAZDA. LOCAL MECHANIC (MIDAS SHOP) SAID THAT THE REAR BRAKES WERE ENTIRELY WORN DOWN (OUTER PADS ONLY) AND HAD WORN DOWN SO MUCH, THEY HAD DAMAGED THE REAR BRAKE ROTORS WHILE THE REAR INNER PADS APPEARED TO HAVE MINIMAL WEAR CONSISTENT WITH THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. FRONT BRAKES ALSO LOOKED TO HAVE MINIMAL WEAR CONSISTENT WITH THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. MIDAS RECOMMENDED THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS BE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY FOR SAFETY PURPOSES; AND COMMENTED HOW UNUSUAL THIS BRAKE PROBLEM SEEMED. UPON GETTING HOME, I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND TSB #04-005-16-3217; NHTSA #10092486 (AMONGST OTHERS) THAT TELL OF A SIMILAR ISSUE. UPON GOING BACK TO MAZDA WITH THE BRAKES AND ROTORS THAT HAD PREMATURELY FAILED AND EXPLAINING THE TSB'S ONLINE, AND REQUESTING A REFUND FOR THE MONEY SPENT AT THE LOCAL SHOP; I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I JUST FEEL THAT MAZDA SHOULD HAVE REPLACED MY BRAKES AND ROTORS UPON MY INITIAL VISIT, KNOWING THAT THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE IN CARS WITH LOW MILEAGE.

I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE AND BEFORE I COULD PUT THE CAR IN PARK IT JUMPED THE CURB AND HIT A VACANT BUILDING. THEIR WERE DAMAGES TO THE GLASS WINDOWS AND THE FRAME OF THE BUILD IS WHAT STOPPED THE CAR.

OUR 2016 MAZDA CX-5 HAS 16,000 MILES ON IT AND THE REAR BRAKES HAVE COMPLETELY DETERIORATED. AFTER VISITING THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THE BRAKES HAVE RUSTED OUT DUE TO THE USE OF THE PARKING BREAK (WE NEED TO USE THE PARKING BREAK DUE TO WHERE WE PARK). MAZDA CLAIMS THIS IS A NORMAL 'WEAR-AND-YEAR' ISSUE BUT I DO NOT SEE HOW THIS IS AS THE VEHICLE HAS SUCH LOW MILEAGE. THE 2013-2015 CX-5S SUFFERED A SIMILAR ISSUE WHERE MAZDA WILL FIX AND REPLACE THE BRAKES. HOWEVER FOR US, THEY CLAIM THIS IS OUR FAULT ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE IS LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD.

IN AUGUST 2016, I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2016 MAZDA CX-5 (DEALERSHIP: WELLESLEY MAZDA). UNFORTUNATELY, THE CAR HAD ISSUES RELATED TO MY BRAKES. ON DECEMBER 08, 2017, THE BRAKES OF MY RIGHT REAR TIRE LOCKED UP WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN A CITY STREET (35MPH ZONE) CAUSING THEM TO OVERHEAT TO THE POINT WHERE THE BRAKE DISC GOT RED HOT AND SMOKED UP, INCREASING THE RISK OF MY TIRES BLOWING OUT/CATCHING FIRE DUE TO THE HEAT GENERATED BY FRICTION. IN ADDITION TO THIS BEING A SAFETY RISK FOR MYSELF AND OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROAD, THIS WAS EXTREMELY INCONVENIENT. MY CAR WAS IN NO CONDITION TO BE DRIVEN AND I WAS STRANDED ALONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS ISSUE OCCURED. I HAD A SIMILAR COMPLAINT IN AUGUST 2017 WHERE THE LEFT WHEEL LOCKED INVOLUNTARILY WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS ABLE TO NOTICE THE SMOKE BEFORE THINGS GOT WORSE AND THAT THIS DID NOT CAUSE A COLLISION. WELLESLEY MAZDA REPLACED THE CALIPERS, BRAKE DISC ETC. ONLY FOR THAT PARTICULAR TIRE, DESPITE MY REPEATED REQUESTS TO REPLACE THOSE FOR ALL THE TIRES OR FOR AT LEAST THAT AXLE. MY CAR HAS ONLY RUN ~8,000 MILES, I AM REGULAR WITH MY CAR'S MAINTENANCE AND MY LAST SERVICE WAS ON 12/04/2017. MAZDA IS TELLING ME NOW THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE CALIPERS AND THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS. HOWEVER, I WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE THIS ISSUE AND THE SAFETY BULLETIN. THIS COULD'VE BEEN DONE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS: A) WHEN THE ISSUE WITH THE LEFT BRAKE HAPPENED B) WHEN I REPORTED A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM MY CAR (IN SEPT OR OCT) C) WHEN I GOT MY CAR SERVICED. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DETECT THIS ISSUE AND AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION DID NOT REPLACE THE OTHER CALIPER, A DECISION THAT PROVED TO BE INCORRECT AND A RISK TO ME AND OTHERS. THERE ARE NO RECALLS EITHER.

DEC 9, 2017 - TODAY WAS FIRST DAY OF SNOW AND FIRST DAY IN MY >2 YEARS OF DRIVING CX-5 THAT I EXPERIENCED LOSS IN BRAKING, WHICH SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME. IT HAPPENED THRICE WITHIN SPAN OF 20 MINUTES. EACH TIME I STARTED THE CAR AND TRIED TO BRAKE FOR THE 1ST TIME, IT WOULDN'T STOP AND ROLLED OVER FOR ATLEAST 3-5 FEET EVEN WHEN I HAD THE BRAKES PRESSED TO THE FLOOR. THANKFULLY IT WAS ON INTERNAL ROADS AND I WAS AT 15 MPH ANTICIPATING STOP SIGNS AT INTERSECTIONS. IT HASN'T HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE DURING LAST YEAR WINTER SEASON, SO NOT SURE WHAT IS CAUSING IT.

REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS SHOW SEVERE WEAR AT 14K MILES. ROTORS HAVE VISIBLE WEAR MARKS AND CORROSION. BRAKING FUNCTION IMPAIRED AND PEDAL MUST BE DEEPLY PRESSED TO ACHIEVE DECELERATION. DEALER SAID THIS IS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND REPLACED PADS. HOWEVER EVEN WITH NEW PADS, BRAKING IS STILL MUSHY. 2015 AND 2014 MODEL YEARS HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM / TSB. APPEARS THAT MANUFACTURING DEFECT CONTINUED INTO 2016 MODEL YEAR.

WITH 6379 MILES DRIVEN MOSTLY ON HIGHWAY IS THIS A FAULTY PAD PRODUCT? HAPPENS AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN STOPPING. STARTED 06/17 AND STILL HAPPENING.

WHILE DRIVING ON A SLOPE WITH BIT OF CURVE ON A HIGHWAY WHEN I APPLIED A MILD BRAKE TO REDUCE THE SPEED, THE CAR ABRUPTLY MOVED STRAIGHT LEFT AND GOES OFF ROAD. THE BRAKE AND STEERING DIDN'T RESPOND IMMEDIATELY FOR FEW SECONDS AND THE CAR KEEP GOING DOWN OFF ROAD ON A VERY ROUGH TERRAIN. LUCKILY IT STOPPED FEW METERS BEFORE A SHARP FALL.

THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE LOCKS THE REAR WHEELS AS DESIGNED. THE TOGGLE SWITCH THAT ACTIVATES THE BRAKES HAS DIRECT CONTROL THAT DOES NOT GO THROUGH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM OR THE ON BOARD COMPUTER. ONCE THE PARKING BRAKE IS ACTIVATED, AT ANY SPEED, THERE IS A TWO STEP PROCESS REQUIRED TO RELEASE THE BRAKES AND ALLOW THE REAR WHEELS TO ROTATE. IN MY CASE, THE ACCIDENTAL ACTIVATION OF THE BRAKE SWITCH AT LESS THAN 10 MPH LOCKED UP THE REAR BRAKES AND THE CAR CAME TO A VERY ABRUPT SCREECHING HALT. IF I WERE GOING FASTER WHEN THIS OCCURRED, THE BRAKE LOCK UP COULD HAVE LED TO A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 MAZDA CX-5. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND INCREASED RAPIDLY WITHOUT WARNING. ALSO, THE BRAKES FAILED TO WORK. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT DROVE OVER A SMALL TREE AND THEN CRASHED INTO ANOTHER TREE, WHICH HELPED STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED MUSCLE, NECK, AND BACK PAIN. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT REQUIRED. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,751.

MAZDA HAS A TSB 04-005/15 THAT NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE 2016 MODEL YEAR; CURRENTLY IT ONLY COVERS MODEL YEARS 2013-2014, BUILD BEFORE OCT 9, 2013. MY 2016 CX5 (WITH LESS THAN 30,000MI.) HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE AS DESCRIBED BY MAZDA'S TSB (EXCESSIVE OUTER BRAKE PAD WEAR WITH LITTLE INNER PAD WEAR). MADZA SERVICE MANAGERS ARE NOT HONORING THIS TSB IF THE VIN IS AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE. SORRY I DON'T HAVE ANY PHOTOS AT THIS TIME TO DOCUMENT THE PROBLEM. ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE STAYS ENGAGED WHILE DRIVING CAUSING BRAKES EXCESSIVE WEAR AND BRAKE FAILURE. FIVE 2016 CX5 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED IN SAME 5 MONTH PERIOD CAME TO DEALERSHIP WITH SAME PROBLEM. PROBLEM FIRST DETECTED BY SQUEAKING. PROBLEM GETS WORSE UNTIL DIFFICULT TO STOP WHEN BRAKING. GRUMBLING NOISE IN FRONT CAUSED BY BAD BEARINGS. PROVIDING DEALER RECORDS AND PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN ORDERED. CONCERNED THAT MAZDA HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE WHICH MAY NOT MANIFEST ITSELF FOR A YEAR OR MORE AFTER PURCHASE. MAZDA IS STILL SELLING THE 2016 MODELS SINCE THE 2017'S HAVE BEEN DELAYED. MAZDA HAS HAD REAR BRAKE PROBLEMS IN ITS PREVIOUS MODELS OF CX5 BUT DOES NOT ADDRESS ISSUES ON THE 2016. CONCERNED THAT SOMEONE MAY BE SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED BY THIS BRAKING ISSUE. CAR HAS BEEN IN SERVICE SINCE NOVEMBER 17 2016 BECAUSE SUITABLE PARTS ARE STILL ON ORDER. BOUGHT NEW CAR; DRIVEN LESS THAN 400 MILES; THUDDING NOISE NOTICED PRETTY MUCH FROM DAY 1. GOT LOUDER. TOOK IT IN. THE RIGHT REAR HUB, AND BEARING ASSEMBLY WERE FAULTY AND HAD ALSO DAMAGED INNER DISC. THE DEALER FIXED IT BUT ASSURANCE OF "FAULTY PART, DOESN'T HAPPEN WITH MAZDA" NOW DOES NOT RING TRUE. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME HAD I BEEN DRIVING LONG DISTANCE, FOR WHICH THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 MAZDA CX-5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP AT 20 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND FAILED TO RESPOND. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED CONTINUOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE STOPPED AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,797.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPACE WITH A 2016 MAZDA CX-5 (7000 MILES) ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD LIT UP AND THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN (UNINTENDED ACCELERATION). THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK! IN AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID THE CAR PARKED IN FRONT OF ME I SWERVED TO THE RIGHT, UNFORTUNATELY I HIT THE PARKED CAR WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO MOVED IT ABOUT 12 FEET FORWARD. MY VEHICLE CONTINUED GOING UP AN OVER A CURBED MEDIAN AND FINALLY CAME TO REST APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET AWAY WITH ENOUGH FORCE (BRAKES FINALLY WORKED) TO KNOCK MY GLASSES OFF AS MY HEAD JERKED FORWARD. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WAS EXAMINED AND DEEMED "WORKING AS DESIGNED". SUPPOSEDLY, INFORMATION WAS SENT TO MAZDA USA ENGINEERS, THE DEALER STATES THEY FOUND NOTHING UNUSUAL BUT HAVE NEVER GIVEN ME A WRITTEN REPORT STATING SO EVEN THOUGH I HAVE REQUESTED IT ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE DEALER RECOMMENDATION WAS TO FIX THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR ($4400.00 WORTH) AND THEN THEY WOULD INSTALL A "SPECIAL BLACK BOX" AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR A FEW DAYS. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR 3 DAYS, THE DEALER STILL SAYS THAT NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. WE FEEL THAT MAZDA CORP SHOULD TAKE THIS VEHICLE BACK AND INSPECT IT THOROUGHLY FOR UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, AS WE DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE ANYMORE.
