Cracked cylinder head due to defect in the casting process. Oil leaking thru the crack landing on the exhaust manifold causing an odor and possibly toxic fumes in the cabin of the vehicle.

Dec 16, 2025

Mazda has inspected the car and determined that there is a crack in the cylinder head. This is apparently a known defect in 2018-2021 Mazdas with 2.5L engines, including, without limitation, the 2018 Mazda CX-5. The cracked cylinder head has caused leaking coolant, which can drain into the engine and create serious safety issues. Mazda is aware of the issue, however, they are claiming that it is not covered by warranty.

Hydraulic lifters keep having issues

Nov 3, 2025

2018 Mazda CX-5, 2.5L NA Has been diagnosed with leak in the cylinder head cover, which has resulted in engine oil leaking directly onto the exhaust manifold. This leak produces significant smoke and a strong burning oil smell while the vehicle is running. There are numerous reports on Mazda owner forums describing the same issue occurring in Mazda CX-5 models. Some owners even reported instances of minor fires or active burning under the hood due to oil contacting hot components. Mazda released Technical Service Bulletin TSB #SA-031-21, which includes a redesigned cylinder head for the 2018–2019 CX-5 models. This bulletin demonstrates Mazda’s awareness of the design flaw. The TSB only covers turbo 2.5L engines and not normally aspirated engines. There is substantial evidence that this is a widespread defect in these model years, unrelated to owner misuse or vehicle mileage. Mazda should take full responsibility by issuing a formal recall or providing an extended warranty to address the problem and prevent safety risks.

Driving fine at low speeds (under 40mph), once I accelerate to highway speeds the engine misfires, check engine light flashes, Smart City Brake System Malfunction, Radar Malfunction, and car losses all engine power. Car just coast, lights and brakes still work. Check engine code moves around and will be on cylinder 3 sometimes and cylinder 4 other times. Able to replicate this issue multiple times. Serious safety concern.

Oct 7, 2025

2018 Mazda CX-5, 2.5L Naturally Aspirated Engine The vehicle has been diagnosed with a leak from the cylinder head cover, resulting in engine oil dripping directly onto the exhaust manifold. This issue causes noticeable smoke and a strong burning oil odor inside the cabin while the engine is running. This defect presents multiple serious safety concerns: 1) Health hazard due to prolonged exposure to burning oil fumes inside the vehicle. 2) Fire risk from oil contacting hot engine components. 3) Potential engine failure, which could lead to vehicle stalling or loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash and possible loss of life. Mazda issued Technical Service Bulletin TSB #SA-031-21, which introduced a redesigned cylinder head for 2018–2019 CX-5 models. The release of this TSB indicates Mazda’s awareness of the underlying design flaw. There is substantial evidence, including numerous owner reports, that this is a widespread issue affecting these model years. The defect is not related to vehicle mileage or user negligence. Mazda should be held fully accountable and take corrective action by issuing a formal safety recall or offering an extended warranty to affected owners. Immediate attention to this matter is necessary to protect consumer safety and prevent future incidents.

Cracked cylinder head leaks oil directly onto hot exhaust, causing smoke, fumes in cabin and a fire risk.

Sep 5, 2025

the cylinder head has a crack in it witch sprays oil all over the engine.it also sprays oil on to the very catalitic converter that's very hot .smoke is everywhere and iam afraid it will cause a fire

Sep 4, 2025

I own a 2018 Mazda CX-5. I currently have 64,770 miles on the car. I have had a burning smell and smoke coming from the engine. The car was taken to the dealer (John Kennedy Mazda Conshohocken) and I was told it was fixed by replacing a gasket. The smell and smoke persisted. I took it back to the dealer and now I am told there is a leaking cylinder head. I do not feel safe driving this car especially with my kids in the car while the engine is smoking. I have had to pull over on the highway due to this. No warning lights were on until a week prior to taking it back a second time when my oil light finally came on.

Aug 13, 2025

Engine Cylinder heads started to leak at 75k miles causing oil and coolant to leak and puddle. This was after a fuel pump recall.

Jun 24, 2025

The radio changes stations by itself, speakers/music goes in and out. The screen freezes and cannot change stations. And also the car lags on taking off sometimes. Often smells like fuel when you turn on the car, Assuming a fuel pump issue, not sure. I spoke to the salesman who sold me the car (adam) within less than 30 days of having the vehicle and told me the electrical issue with radio would be covered. Then when I called to have the issue fixed I was told it wasnt going to fixed on their behalf. This car was sold to me with a few issue that I was not aware at the time of purchase.

Jun 18, 2025

While waiting at a stop light the engine will turn off. This has happened three times since I’ve owned the car 2/16/2025.

Jun 2, 2025

Sometimes, the breaks will not go all the way down to the floor and act like theyre not working. it's very odd and only does it once in a while. i have constant issues with the technology in the car. it changes my music, the buttons get stuck and my it acts up. my aunt has the same model and is running into the same issues. i never received a letter in the mail about the last recall and have had issues where it doesnt seem like my engine is getting the power it once did. this was early on after i got the car. my gas mileage has significally decreased even after oil changes.

Jun 2, 2025

Issue with the engine cylinder head leaking engine oil from the side of the cylinder head, where the casting has a defect. Leaks engine oil onto the flashing for the exhaust and exhaust manifold, where it could catch fire. The problem has been confirmed and diagnosed by a licensed mechanic. However, the dealer would not take responsibility for repair or assistance in repair. There are no warnings, while driving and after stopping, the smell of burning oil comes into the car and also smoke from the engine compartment.

The contact owned a 2018 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at 35-45 MPH, the vehicle was shaking and rattling. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the wheel bearings were faulty. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer again where it was diagnosed that there were loose parts in the engine. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. Additionally, the brake light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the switch and mat were causing the failure. The vehicle was repaired and returned to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 31,673.

Had an oil leak suddenly appear on the vehicle with only 55400 miles. Found there are technical service bulletins for this motor that the head cracks causing leaks. It is on many forums. Reached out to Mazda and got zero help

Apr 26, 2025

2018 Mazda CX5 2.5 ltr engine. Major oil leak that has been diagnosed as cracked or porous aluminum casting on the cylinder block. Oil is dripping consistently out of the problem area onto the manifold, causing smoke to flow into the cabin of the car and out of the hood as well. Car is currently at a Mazda dealership for a second diagnosis that confirmed the leak. Car is 3,000 miles out of warranty. Waiting to hear what the dealership is going to do. I also have contacted Mazda corp. and have a case# to take further action if needed. As you can see by the list of "engine" complaints for this problem, it is well documented that this is not an isolated issue.

Apr 11, 2025

Started 2018 Mazda CX-5 and the engine was extremely loud and a ticking noise was heard. Brought it to my local garage (Charlies Garage) and it was determined that the lifters needed replacement. Garage told me that Mazda issued a Service Alert on November 22, 2019 (Alert # SA-012/19) and did not notify customers of the Valve Tapping or knocking noise from cylinder head. The Garage then told me that Mazda issued a Technical Service Bulletin on April 23, 2020 (Bulletin No. 01-006/20). Again, customers were not notified of the Tapping Noise from Engine Bulletin that was issued. There were no alerts on the dashboard of the car, no warning lights, or other indicators. If Mazda had notified customers, the car would have been fixed UNDER WARRANTY. I do have a video of the noise and if you let me know how to send that, I will.

Apr 4, 2025

Car started leaking and burning oil. Blue smoke coming out of engine. Low oil pressure light went on. I had it looked at by an auto mechanic. This is a major safety issue as the engine will fail because of the low pressure. The car is not drivable. Turns out it's a known issue with the cylinder head that Mazda knows about because they issued a redesign and issued recalls for the 2019 and the turbo engine. They also issued a TSB for this problem. Car is out of warranty, but not old enough to have major engine issues.

Apr 3, 2025

I noticed a burning smell coming from engine. I took it to a Mazda dealership where they found a cracked cylinder head that needed complete replacing. There was no warning light or other symptoms before I noticed the smell. Vehicle has only been inspected by the dealership. Vehicle is out of warranty but only has 37000 miles on it.

Mar 26, 2025

Defective Engine. Cracked Cylinder Head. Engine oil leaked overnight because of known Mazda 2.5 liter Skyactive engine defect.

Mar 25, 2025

The issue began when I started to smell burning oil. As time went on smoke began to slowly come from the hood. I took my car to the mazda dealership and said that there was a cracked cylinder head in the engine. After doing research online this has been a major issue with the 2018-2020 model.

Mar 17, 2025

My 2018 Mazda CX-5 with just over 45,000 miles is showing the dreaded cracked cylinder head symptoms. Coolant is leaking causing a very noticeable burning smell in the cabin and faint smoke emanating from under the hood. My CX-5 has followed the maintenance schedule at the dealership that the vehicle was purchased. At this point the dealership has not been helpful at all. Mazda MUST start including 2018 CX-5s to CSP11 (covers 2019 CX-5s).

Mar 5, 2025

I own a CX5 2018 Mazda with around 31,000 miles on it. Two days ago I experienced a smoke/fume event in my car while driving. The cabin filled with burnt oil fumes and a pungent smell. I happened to be near a Mazda dealership and was able to reach it with windows down and slow driving. The dealership inspected my car and confirmed a large oil leak caused by a cracked cylinder head. I was told this is a known issue with Mazda CX5/CX9 series and that it would be covered under warranty. Today I was informed by the same dealership that my standard powertrain warranty will not cover it, as it is 60,000 miles or 5 years. My car only has 31,000 miles on it, but it’s over the 5 years by little over a year. I am looking at paying around $6,500 out of pocket to fix my vehicle. I asked if there is an extended warranty from Mazda specifically regarding cylinder heads, due to this being a known defect, however the service person said there isn’t for my car. After some online research I did come across an extended powertrain warranty applying to 2019-2020 CX5 models due to the cylinder head cracking issues. I ask that this is being looked into and that the warranty needs to be extended to the 2018 model as well.

Replacement of cracked head cylinder diagnosis completed by Mazda dealer Fred beans in Willow Grove Pennsylvania Mazda is claiming they cannot cover the repair cost due to carfax not reporting all my maintenance services. After speaking to mazda customer service they confirmed that it is illegal to use carfax as documented proof. I provided proof of the maintenance aka oil change that was not eeported directly through carfax and have not heard anyrhing back. My car is under 60,000 miles and I have maintain my car and this should not be my fault this should not be my fault. Please help if possible i dont know who else to go to

Feb 24, 2025

There is a cracked cylinder head cover and the oil leaks from the crack onto the manifold causing smoke and burning smell. I have read several examples on Mazda forums [XXX] ; [XXX] ) of this happening with the Mazda CX-5. A former Mazda mechanic posted he would see a couple vehicles a week at his dealership that experienced this problem. The odor of the burning oil onto the manifold is overpowering when sitting in the car. Some people with the same problem have posted they actually had small fires / burning under the car. In May, 2021, Mazda issued a technical service bulletin TSB # SA-031-21 with a cylinder head redesign for 2018/2019 CX5 models. this is telling of their awareness of the problem. There were no dashboard warnings to indicate the problem - just the burning smell from oil and oil stains in the driveway which caused me to bring the car in. There is substantial evidence that this is a common problem with these model years and it is not related to the mileage of the vehicle - mine has only 37k miles on it. It should be noted that the cylinder head is aluminum and only 2mm thick vs 5-7mm on most vehicles. Mazda should be held accountable and issue a recall and/or extended warranty to address this problem. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Car has a ticking sound when in idle mode. My mechanic sent me a few videos to reference and a bulletin from Mazda that attributes the clicking to the Hydraulic Lash Adjuster

Cracked cylinder head at 65,0000 miles

Feb 7, 2025

We were driving and noticed some white smoke when we parked, so we took it to a mechanic and he diagnosed: “Found that only when engine gets up to operating temp that it begins to leak through hairline cracks in cylinder head. Oil leak is severe and recommend not driving and bringing to dealer for possible warranty verification.” He told us the issue is specifically on the driver side where there are hairline cracks on the backside, left quarter of the cylinder head.

Feb 4, 2025

There is a known issue with 2018 Mazda CX 5 related to a cracked cylinder head. I have just under 60,000 miles and I noticed smoke coming from under the hood near the exhaust manifold and a strong odor of burning oil. Dolan Mazda in Reno, NV has confirmed I have a cracked cylinder head and it is the cause of the burning oil. I am concerned that oil leaking from the cracked cylinder head onto the exhaust is a fire hazard. I feel a recall should be issued.

Jan 31, 2025

During cold starts there is a loud ticking sound coming from the top side of the engine. It appears to be one or more HLA.

Jan 31, 2025

We purchased our vehicle from Riley Mazda in September 2018. Shortly after reaching approximately 50,000 miles, we began to notice that the gauges would fluctuate, and there was a slight burning odor in the car cabin. We replaced the air filters for both the engine and cabin, as well as performed an engine oil change. In October, we had a brake flush done when we inquired about the burning smell coming from under the hood. Despite our concerns, the dealership was unable to identify any problems at that time. On a subsequent visit, we paid a diagnostic fee of $220.00. It was during this visit that the dealership discovered an issue with the engine. The newly identified problems will significantly impair the vehicle's performance and decrease its value. Additionally, we anticipate needing future repairs, which could pose serious safety hazards.

Cracked cylinder head causing oil to leak

Jan 23, 2025

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - Engine cylinder head was broken and caused oil leakage How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Oil leakage resulted in a smoky smell while driving and could have led to cars on the road or my own car could have skid leading to a fatal accident Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Dealer has inspected. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear - No warning lamps but there was a smoky smell while driving & visible oil leak under the front hood.

Jan 20, 2025

Cylinder head cracked at 46,000 miles causing smoke and oil leakage. This was the root of an almost $6,000 repair, leaving me without a vehicle for 15 days. This issue could also lead to more extensive engine problems in the future.

Jan 16, 2025

My vehicle has been diagnosed with a cracked cylinder head. The problem began when the vehicle had less than 28,000 miles on it. Mazda is repairing it and has agreed to cover the repair under Mazda Customer Care Assistance.

Jan 8, 2025

At approximately 57,000 miles, the cylinder head cracked. It was leaking oil and white smoke was coming out of the engine bay. There were no warning lights. I have since gotten the cylinder head replaced.

Jan 3, 2025

At approximately 65,000 miles, a burning oil odor was detected, and we took our vehicle to the nearest Mazda dealership. Techs confirmed a failed master cylinder resulting in a leak, and that this master cylinder failure is common with 2018 CX-5s resulting from porosity in the cast metal wall creating a leak path over time. I was able to retain the failed casting and all parts which were replaced and am saving for records and analysis. Mazda customer service was contacted about the master cylinder casting failure and declined to cover it because the vehicle was beyond warranty period and because the failure was repaired before I was able to establish contact with Mazda customer service. Note that the failure happened in the approach to the holidays, and while efforts were made to establish contact with Mazda service via website chat, e-mail form submission, and phone, they were unsuccessful due to technical issues on the Mazda site and a non-responsive phone line. I can confirm that my local dealership POC provided me with Mazda corporate contact info per my request when the diagnosis was made (e-mail copies available.) The issue was not on my end, as efforts were made again immediately after Christmas, and phone and website chat were immediately successful when attempted. The website chat log indicating their denial and rationale for denial is available. This same vehicle has also had an issue with the front timing cover leaking as several others have noted, and this issue was also acknowledged by local dealership technicians as an endemic issue with this model. The front timing cover issue were identified and repaired within the 60,000-mile warranty. Copies of available correspondence with Mazda, including dealer invoices/receipts, service records for the vehicle (all done at Mazda dealerships) and chat history with Mazda customer service can be provided.

Purchased vehicle from dealership drove 1650 miles, cylinder head began leaking, excessive oil. Took vehicle to repair shop their assessment cracked cylinder head. Warranty expired, dealership refused help in addition to Mazda Corp. unless brought to nearest dealership 140 miles away, with no guarantee. Vehicle is not driveable, I do have photos of the cracks.

Dec 17, 2024

The cylinder head on my 2018 Mazda CX-5 developed cracks on the exhaust side, leading to significant oil leakage onto the exhaust manifold. This has caused engine damage and safety concerns. The vehicle is currently at a Mazda dealership, where the issue has been inspected and documented. The component is available for further inspection upon request. The oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold creates a serious fire hazard due to the high heat generated in this area. Additionally, the vehicle experienced burning smells and visible smoke coming through the air vents, which could impair visibility or cause distraction while driving. These conditions place the safety of myself, my passengers, and others on the road at risk. The issue has been confirmed by a Mazda dealership. They provided a video showing oil actively dripping from the cracked cylinder head and stated that the engine requires a full replacement. Mazda dealership video: [XXX] This video contains the engine inspection findings conducted at the dealership during my recent visit. It clearly shows the damage and highlights the issues identified. The vehicle has been inspected by the Mazda dealership service team, who identified the cracks in the cylinder head and documented the oil leakage and related engine damage. There were no warning lamps or messages on the dashboard prior to the failure. The symptoms began with a noticeable burning smell inside the cabin, followed by a slight mist coming out of the air vents and smoke from under the hood. Oil leakage was later observed on the ground, and the coolant level appeared empty. I’ve received a video inspection of my vehicle from the service center on March 7, 2024 with no concerns at that time, which you can view here: [XXX] . This link leads to TruVideo, a platform that many dealerships use to share service videos with customers. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Dec 16, 2024

Excessive intermittent Engine vibration at 10 mph to 40 mph at very light load, very light throttle. If a very light throttle Is applied or removed the vibration seems to go away. In light traffic at low speed the vibration is of concern as to the damages it may further cause. On 11/19/2024 Boucher Mazda charged me to perform PCM and TCM updates which did not correct the problem. On 12/11/2024 Russ Darrow Mazda of Greenfield Wi, thought a motor mount KN-39-040 should be replaced. $540.28 later, the problem is worse. I believe the problem is caused by the CYLINDER DEACTIVATION issue Identified by Recall 3719F which I was never notified. This is a safety issue, because I don’t know when the engine is to fail or stall or what the damages will be. I pay a large fee for Diagnosing only to get “LIP” Service.

Dec 6, 2024

There was a burnt rubber smell coming off the vents, took to dealership and they confirmed there was an issue with the front timing cover and was replaced. Less that a week later, there was smoke coming from the hood of the car. Took back to dealership unaware if it was recurring issue but it was determined there was a NEW oil leak due to faulty cylinder head needing replacement on my car which has less than 50,000 miles. While there was no warning lights, the car was unsafe to drive in that condition.

Dec 5, 2024

The cylinder head cracked while waiting for a light to change at a busy intersection, causing heavy smoke to enter the vehicle through the air vents with the heater on. The smoke filled the car quickly, causing my wife and me to exit the vehicle at the very busy intersection. A local independent service center diagnosed the problem. I was unable to drive the vehicle to the manufacturer for safety reasons and smoke filling the cabin. No warning lights were displayed. This vehicle was maintained following the manufacturer's recommendations throughout its 77,000 mile life.

We are a senior citizen couple driving this 2018 Mazda. Went out to garage to find a significant size area of oil spillage on the floor. The car has just over 25,000 as we are low mileage drivers. Took to a mechanic to find out it is a cracked head and oil is steaming out of the crack.i have since learned that Mazda is well aware of the weakness in this model and has chosen not to do anything about it. Our car is out of warranty. It would be a hardship for us to repair. And if repaired, would it happen again? This has recall written all over it, as well as a class action suit. I would like our vehicle repaired at no cost to us. How long were they aware of this issue? I have found hundreds of complaints. I prefer not to pursue this legally but this is unacceptable by Mazda. This was my second Mazda purchase but will be my last if they cannot stand behind their products.

2018 CX-5 has a cracked or porous (depending who is telling me the issue) cylinder head at 60000 miles. I was told by the Mazda service advisor that the issue is common. I reached out to Mazda for assistance in covering their faulty part and was told they would not cover any of it.

Nov 15, 2024

The car would produce white smoke under the engine hood after getting to speed. It would smell like burnt oil. The shop found a crack in the 3rd cylinder. Will need to replace the cylinder head.

Nov 5, 2024

The engine cylinder head has a crack that has caused the engine oil to leak from the engine. This seems to be a common issue known by Mazda. The oil has saturated the right front brake and portions of the undercarriage, that will also need to be cleaned and or replaced. We had the car looked at a repair shop in Portland OR. they let us know this is a huge problem with this engine and we have not had this repaired as of this note. we will contact or dealer where we purchased the CX-5 and see about getting it replaced. This happened as my Wife was driving from California to our home in Washington. She noticed the oil light was flickering and she found a repair shop in Portland that looked at it and for that the head was cracked. Our car has 89,413 miles on it and has been maintained and does not have any other issues at this time.

Nov 1, 2024

The engine makes a tapping noise during the cold weather that will only go away after the engine has been fully warmed up. This a known issue for with a TSB sent out. However, the issue persist even after repair. The repair is extremely costly and can reach the thousands. This issue also causes worry there is no knowing if the problem will lead to issues further down.

Oct 30, 2024

Vehicle has a cracked cylinder head at 43,000 miles. It is leaking oil and will lead to further engine damage if not repaired. Dealer inspected and diagnosed the problem. There were no vehicle warnings. It was brought to dealer because it was leaking oil and smelled of burning oil. It appears to be a common problem with Mazda Cx5s.

Oct 30, 2024

One of the Cylinder heads has a crack in which has cause some oil to leak in the affected area. This is not the 2.5T engine, there is a TSB out for those engines. The affected engine is the 2.5 NA engine.

Oct 3, 2024

The contact owns a 2018 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated while driving downhill at an undisclosed speed, the oil warning light intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with a cylinder head leak. The dealer replaced the cylinder head and the gasket. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

Mileage: 82,000

First warning was the oil light came on and I became aware of a leak. When I took it to the mechanic the next day, he described a porous spot on the side of the cylinder head that had opened up and was rapidly losing oil when the engine was running. I understand that this is not a unique problem to my vehicle but is common with this model year. I am concerned that the engine will run out of oil and malfunction causing loss of control at highway speed. The car is currently scheduled for confirmation of the problem with the local Mazda dealer.

Aug 29, 2024

Defective sealant used on timing cover, already leaking engine oil at 85000km… also confirmed as the same engine prone to cylinder head cracking from poor casting dimensions resulting in engine oil contacting the exhaust manifold and smoking. Possible fire hazard. Engine can seize up from low oil pressure at highway speeds and lock up the wheels causing an accident. Not sure why Mazda hasn’t issued a recall for this obvious safety concern… reminds me of Hyundai/Kia engine problems and now they’ve been sued and replacing thousands of engines for free.

Aug 22, 2024

Engine seems that it cracked. The car has 66K and has good maintenance record. I took my 2018 CX5 to Mazda for a possible oil leak. Mechanic says block has hairline crack, is leaking oil down exhaust manifold and engine needs to be replaced. It seems a known issue with this model & Mazda is aware of the problem. There is no recall or class action lawsuit that either of us found. Mazda has said this car in no longer under warranty. It has 66K and the engine is broken?

Aug 21, 2024

The issue started happening [XXX]. I was driving home and the car went into limp mode. Several errors came on the heads up display and on the dashboard. At first I could not go faster than 31mph, then it dropped down to 17mph, then to 7mph by the time I got home. 1.When accelerating from a stop light, car goes into limp mode and won’t accelerate almost stalling in the road. You must pull over, turn off the car and wait 5 minutes so error clears so you can drive again. 2.Car goes into Limp mode when going up a hill 3.Between 46-48 mph, car hesitates when accelerating 4.Between 56-60 mph, car hesitates when accelerating 5.Error Codes received per Lake Car Care: P2299, C1001, B1303 I brought the car to Lake Car Care and they replaced the spark plugs and coils as the codes said it was a misfire on Cylinder 1 & 2. This cost me $ 947.57. This did not fix the problem. The mechanic Todd took the car for a ride and it went into limp mode for him also. He could not figure the issue out after having the car for a couple weeks so suggested I take it to Mazda in Clermont. Mazda has had the car twice for over 2 months now and cannot figure it out. They replaced the ABS Module for $ 1284 which did not fix the problem. Replaced the injectors for $ 1426 which didn't fix the problem. They did a fuel compression test which came back fine and cleaned the catalytic converter which they said was clogged and this didn't fix the issue either. It is unsafe to drive this vehicle on the road as it does not accelerate so it is putting myself and others at risk. Mazda corporate has been called and case manager has been assigned but has been NO HELP to me at all. Photos are attached of all error messages, text messages with Mazda, repair receipts, etc. August 9th, Mazda told me they are at a loss and don't know what else to do, I haven't heard from them since. Cylinder head was found to be cracked for a while on the vehicle. This was discovered at 117K miles but likely was cracked well before judging from the age of the oil in the engine bay. Car has been maintained well this shouldn't be happening at all this early into its life.

Jul 23, 2024

Burnt oil smell started being noticed in the cabin. Checked for leaks and none was found. Took the car to the dealer and it turns out the cylinder head is cracked. Dealer acknowledged this is an ongoing manufacturing issue. I contacted Mazda corporate to see if I qualify for after warranty assistance. No engine lights are on. Car has been maintained properly.

Cracked Cylinder Head. Oil leak and smoke near passenger side.

Jul 22, 2024

I bought this brand new in 2018 (Aug.) and I take care of this car very well. I was in the Korean Army, and I worked at the motor pool taking care of cars and trucks. Last year, I noticed my oil level decreasing that I kept refilling. I just thought it was burning some oil. Last week, I was losing lots of oil with some smoke (oil burning). I took the car to a local shop and they said "the cylinder head appears to be leaking oil from the back drivers side of the head".

Jul 13, 2024

I noticed a burning smell while driving. Smoke started coming through the air vents and made me light-headed. I asked my son to take a look, and he said that oil was dripping onto the exhaust and smoking, and it could have caught on fire. There were no warning lamps or any other indicators besides the smell and smoke. I could have passed out from inhaling the smoke and died, or my car could have caught on fire. I took my car to the Mazda dealer. They confirmed that my car was affected by the well-known 2018-2021 CX-5 cylinder head crack. They quoted me $4848 to fix it. When I asked if they could help me with the price, they offered me 10% off. I told them that’s unacceptable. After much back and forth with the dealer and Mazda Corporate, they dropped the total to $1470.60.

The car (2018 Mazda CX-5) exhibited a strong burning smell coming from either the engine or exhaust which you could smell in the cabin. No warning lamps turned on in the dash indicating any problem. Problem was recreated by Mazda dealership service center and diagnosis is that cylinder head is cracked and is leaking oil into the exhaust manifold. Suggested repair was a replacement of the cylinder head. Was told this is out of the 5 year/60K warranty. Had car for 5 year 11 months and only driven 45K miles. Car has not been inspected by anyone other than Empire Mazda of Huntington.

Oil smell in cabin. Diagnosed by independent repair shop as hairline crack in back of cylinder head. Cylinder head replaced at 91000 miles.

Jun 5, 2024

2018 mazda started smoking from under hood and noticed a burning oil smell. Took to mechanic and was told engine head gasket has a huge Crack. Car only has 22k on it and never been in any accident. All appropriate preventative services are up to date. There was no indication light no warning light nothing to identify why the car was leaking oil and smoking until it was looked at. This has multiple.complaints in regards to this specific year and model and needs to be addresses before someone's car catches fire or stalls in the middle of highway

Constant ticking sound coming from engine, most apparent while idling but continues even after oil change and engine warm up. Goes away for short periods of time. Always comes back and is very loud. Sometimes engine block shakes and can be felt through the steering wheel.

This car that I financed on [XXX] 2024 has been back to the dealership over 6 times. My car loses power on the freeway and all main roads. I push the gas pedal and nothing happens so I am forced to pull over and turn the car off and restart it again. It's very dangerous when I'm merging on the freeway and I cannot accelerate and have to pull over in traffic. Sports cars International in Lynnwood Washington is well aware of the issues I've been having and they have not fixed them. They have allowed me to drive off the lot knowing I am in a car that is dangerous and unsafe, a car that could kill another family or myself. They are unresponsive to call of my phone calls and emails. This car has had nothing but problems since then day I drove it of the lot. Come to find out from their Yelp and BBB reviews thus happens to a lot of people that buy cars from them. They are rude to me and I feel like I'm on danger every time I drive this car. To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to report a serious issue with the 2018 Mazda CX-5, specifically regarding the structural integrity of the cylinder head. This defect leads to significant oil leakage, toxic smoke entering the vehicle, and substantial repair costs for owners. Despite these problems, it appears Mazda has not initiated a recall, despite being aware of the issue. My wife owns a 2018 Mazda CX-5 with approximately 80,000-90,000 miles. Recently, after she returned home from work, we noticed gray, billowing smoke emanating from the hood. The smell of burning oil and rubber permeated our garage and home, making it difficult to breathe. We took the car to an independent technician at AAMCO, who, after a thorough evaluation, concluded that the cylinder head was cracked. Given the car's mileage and overall condition, they were extremely surprised and double-checked all other possibilities before reaching this conclusion. They informed us that this issue seems widespread, as evidenced by their online research (links provided below). For further verification, I drove the car to a Mazda dealership, which took about an hour due to avoiding the highway. During the drive, I continuously smelled burning oil, which raises significant health concerns, especially for my pregnant wife. The dealership acknowledged that this issue occurs with the CX-5 and quoted us $5,350 before tax for repairs. While my wife and I are fortunate enough to afford this repair, many consumers may not have $5,500 readily available to fix a manufacturing defect. This situation underscores the urgent need for Mazda to address this problem through a recall. Sincerely, [XXX] A few links below: [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The cylinder head cracked and broke resulting in a massive oil leak that covered all the parts under my car and under the hood and engine which in result started to smoke. This is not only a major issue of extremely costly repairs but more importantly also serves as a major safety issue. This could had caused fire to the vehicle and also engine misfire resulting in engine failure while in drive and potentially lead to critical injury or death for me and my family. Mazda was aware of their poorly designed engineering for this critical and extremely important component and it is known Mazda recognized the issue by issuing a TSB. After further research there are numerous TSB issued for multiple engine failures with Mazda. It is also known that certain VIN number vehicles manufactured with this defect are commonly reported and have experienced this exact same issue within only a few years and or very low mileage. This is a major mechanical failure to happen to vehicles within a short time span of purchase and results in loss of customer trust and loyalty. As a first time car buyer I am deeply dissatisfied and disappointed with Mazda. I would not had purchased a brand new car if I would had known I would experience this only at 5 years and 71 thousand miles. My vehicle was inspected and diagnosed by a certified Mazda dealership. I was advised and informed that this is a huge issue that has happened with all customers. Mazda knowingly neglected the proper manufacturing and engineering for the cylinder head and other engine parts, which is the most critical component to any vehicle to function and operate. Lastly what is more concerning was that there was no warning signs such as lights or sensors that were triggered as warning of the issue and vehicle failure posing as another safety concern for drivers.

The contact owns a 2018 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated that while her son was driving at approximately 45 MPH, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact also stated that the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump and fuel rail needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,896.

Mileage: 75,896

Apr 19, 2024

Despite a recall on the fuel pump, there continues to be a problem but instead of the “back” fuel pump that was fixed, the “front” fuel pump seems to be having the same issue. When taken to the dealer, the code P0087- fuel rail/system pressure too low shows up. This is causing car to stall, unable to pick up speed or simply pick up too much speed when attempting to accelerate. It’s a safety hazard for a car less than 6 years old.

Apr 12, 2024

Noticed an oil smell when driving the vehicle, slightly premature to when it was due for an oil change. Engine was emitting light blue smoke when parked after driving for more than 20 minutes. Took the car to a Mazda dealership to get serviced two days after noticing the issue and was told that the cylinder head was cracked and needed to be replaced. There was oil leaking from the vehicle, which I had not noticed, and it had soaked a lot of the front undercarriage of the car. Research into the effects of an oil leak indicate that it can cause a serious malfunction of the engine and other components of the car, but I did not experience that in the time of noticing the problem and taking the vehicle to get serviced. The problem was diagnosed by the service department at a Mazda dealership and is being repaired there. The oil indicator came on a day after noticing the smell.

Apr 12, 2024

Noticed a burning oil smell coming from the car along with leaking oil in the driveway. Vehicle has 53000 miles on it and was 3 months out of powertrain warranty but still under the 60000 mileage cap. Local Mazda dealership came back saying that it was a "SA-037/23 Oil leak at cylinder head, cylinder head replacement with parts kit" and quoted $5100 to repair. Dealership stated that the vehicle was unsafe to operate. There were no dash indicator lights or symptoms of overheating to indicate that there was a problem outside of the smell. After the diagnosis was made, we researched and found that this was a commonly reported problem for this model year

Apr 11, 2024

The cylinder head and timing cover are leaking oil and need to be replaced. It is at the dealer and available for inspection. The car started smoking and lost oil obscuring my vision. The problem appears to be well known by the dealer and they were able to diagnose the issue. The vehicle has only been inspected by the dealer where I purchased it. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms. This vehicle has had regular maintenance per the manufacturers specifications since it was purchased new.

Apr 3, 2024

Oil started to leak along with a burning smell, ended up being a cracked cylinder head at 77k miles. It was not in an accident & it did not overheat. But it appears this is a known issue with this make, model & year. Now Mazda only wants to pay $1k of $5k charge. I bought the dealers extended warranty, up to 75k miles, which apparently means nothing. My next car will not be Mazda.

Cracked cylinder head at 75000 miles causing oil to leak, Mazda dealership called it a fire risk

Mar 25, 2024

Head cracked at just under 49,000. Oil dripping on exhaust entering cabin continuously. This issue was identified by Mazda to dealers in 2021 via Mazda TSB SA-031/21. Despite having our vehicle serviced multiple times at the Puyallup Mazda dealership after that date, no mention was made of this noted defect. We drove for about a month inhaling the petroleum fumes often thinking it was from trucks ahead of us on road. Dealership replaced the head assembly but since car was 4 months out of warranty (we are the original owners having purchased it new from this dealership) the dealership insisted on charging us for repairs. We've been breathing fumes from a known issue and others may be as well due to faulty manufacturing the manufacturer and dealer refuse to take full responsibility for.what is clearly a defect.

2018 Mazda CX-5 with roughly 52,000 miles on it was emitting a burnt rubber smell and white smoke from the engine. Repair shop thought it was a bad timing lock. Replaced that and car continued to emit white smoke and smell like burnt rubber. Engine then began leaking oil. Took the car back to the repair shop and it was confirmed that the engine had a cracked cylinder head. The repair shop said this is a known issue with 2018-2019 Mazdas. In three days time, the engine leaked roughly 1 quart of oil and was deemed not safe to drive by the repair shop.

Mar 18, 2024

My 2018 Mazda CX-5 had a rubber burning smell and smoke leaked into the cabin. I noticed the next morning, oil leaked onto my driveway. I brought the car to the dealership and they mentioned it was a cracked cylinder head. My car has approximately 49,200 miles on it and it about 5.5 years old. It is under the mileage limit for powertrain warranty but slightly over on the age limit for powertrain warranty. Mazda informed me that they would cover roughly 37% of the repair costs that the dealership quoted me. I've read online on various Mazda forums that many owners are dealing with the same issue and Mazda admitted that a batch of heads have a manufacturing defect. Owners on this forum mentioned Mazda covered 100% of the repair costs for cars that were out of warranty due to this being a known manufacturing issue. I think the proposed coverage that Mazda provided me is insufficient.

There a oil leak either engine cylinder crack or head gasket leak and the car only has 53000 miles when warranty just expires. After searching on the internet, there seems to be many similar cases. Mazda should recall this issue.

There was a TSB #[xxx] for the repair of Cracked Cylinder Head(s). Our 2018 CX-5 incurred a Cracked Cylinder Head at 5,418 miles. This was under the 60,000-mile power train warranty, but after the 5-year term had expired ([XXX]). Our issue started in late January '24. The car had been serviced at the Mazda Dealership in Hyannis, MA until my wife bought a '21 CX-5 model and gave the '18 model to our college son in FL. The TSB was for '18 - '20 models - which has now been increased to the '23 CX-5s. Mazda US would not help us in any way with the engine replacement that the Mazda dealership in Tampa replaced with a '23, 4,000-mile engine. $ 7,462.89 'new' engine that has a '23 engine that could incur the same issue! Also, my wife's newer model, '21, could also be a lemon for the TSB. We're looking for Mazda to step up for it's (loyal) clients! The work was completed and paid for on [XXX]. Mazda reviewed our case ([XXX]) and declined to assist. A reliable vehicle, Mazda, with an engine at 54,000 miles should be cared for by the manufacturer. The reason the time expired and the mileage was low was due to the lack of driving during the Covid era. We have researched online the number of cases for Mazda and the CX-5's issues with the cylinder heads. We are looking for a government interaction to assist consumers like us. We own a 2018 Mazda CX-5 which developed a cracked cylinder head after slightly over 53,000 miles. We had oil leaking in our driveway and our dealership advised us not to drive it as this would be an extreme safety issue. I was advised to contact you as this seems to be an ongoing issue with Mazda CX-5's from 2018-2021. There is a safety bulletin TSB #SA-031-21. I am hoping this will help with resolving this with Mazda costumer service.

ENGINE HEAD HAS CRACK ON IT, CAUSING OIL TO LEAK OUT AND BURN AND SMOKE. IN ORDER TO REPLACE THE ENGINE/CRACK, MANIFOLD NEED TO BE REMOVED. LEAKAGE IS IN THE BACK OF THE ENGINE. THIS MUST BE MANUFACTURED DEFECT. MY MAZDA HAS LESS THAN 45000 MILE ON IT. UNFORTUNATELY WARRANTLY IS NO LONGER VALID. UNLESS A RECALLED IS ISSUE, A REPAIR WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE TO CURRENT OWNER. OTHER WISE OPERATOR HAS TO CONSTANTLY KEEP ADDING OIL.

-cylinder head cracked resulting in leaking and burning oil from rear of cylinder head by exhaust manifold. Car has since been repaired by Mazda, but pictures are available from the incident. -Car was unsafe to drive due to leaking oil all over road (Environmental risks and hazard to others), black smoke and burning smell circulated into cabin via AC (health risks to passengers). Prolonged driving in this condition would have resulted in loss of oil and further damage to the car and others. -Car was towed to independent service center then subsequently towed to Mazda dealership -Mazda dealership inspected and confirmed that it was a manufactured defect that they have seen with other cars. Mazda has a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued as well. -No warning lamps appeared prior to observed smoke and leak, though it was noticed that the car did jerk slightly at times when stopped at a traffic light

Cylinder crack. Recently got a oil change and driving to work couple days after and smelled oil burning into my cab and smoke coming from underneath my hood. Got to work and opened my hood and noticed large amount of oil on belly and leaking oil from my cylinder. I got this vehicle thru a dealership and when contacted, they stated if I pay $7,500 I could get a trade in!!! After numerous searching, I've found a lot of owners with the 2018 Mazda CX-5 are having the same issue with cylinder heads and no corrective actions. Now I have to pay Mazda (after their defective parts) for their mistakes

Dec 27, 2023

This vehicle has stalled out while driving at least 4-5 times since purchasing it in 2018, although issues started about 2020 or 2021. It usually starts with the radio console either malfunctioning or going dead completely while I’m driving and several minutes later (usually after stopping at a red light but sometimes while actively driving) the car stalls out in the middle of traffic. It starts up after few minutes but it’s a very dangerous situation. It also sometimes hesitates when putting my foot on the gas, as if there’s a fuel injection problem. I already got all the recalls fixed but there’s obviously other significant problems with this vehicle. If it causes me to get injured I will be taking legal action.

Defective cylinder head resulting in oil leak. Confirmed and inspected by dealer. No warning messages or symptoms. Just smell of burning oil.

Oct 13, 2023

I just had my vehicle in for routine maintenance and oil change and three days later it started leaking oil, staining my driveway, with the leak getting progressively worse then my check oil light went on, and the day I brought it in, and it was smoking under the hood. My safety and the safety of others on the road was at risk. At the routine maintenance visit they found no issues with the vehicle. After bringing it into the dealership they diagnosed it as a cylinder head crack needing replacement. We had another dealership look at the diagnostic video and explain that this is poor manufacturing. It’s just over 60,000 miles but is still within our warranty from a timeline aspect. Upon research we found this is happening to many people with a Mazda’s from year, 18 to 21. There are many forums about this. Upon an online search we found this problem documented as tsb SA-031/21. I am disappointed that the Mazda company is aware of the faulty cylinder heads in this vehicle, and now I am responsible for the maintenance charge.

Oct 8, 2023

I own a Mazda that I purchased new in 2018. I have kept up with the maintenance to a “T”. I have never abused it. About a month ago I started smelling a strange smell. Like smoke or burnt oil. A couple of weeks later, the engine oil level light came on and the engine was low on oil and that’s when I started seeing that the motor was leaking oil, and I just found out that the engine head cylinder has a crack. I found out that these vehicles have a defect from the factory on this part that cracked, “Engine Head cylinder”. And now to repair it, it is going to cost me around $6,000. The warranty has run out.

Many incidents have occurred with this vehicle. First occurrence happened 11/25/21. Attempting to pass another vehicle and the car began slowing down and various warnings came on. Pulled off to the side of the road, turned off the vehicle and restarted without any further incident. This same thing happened 2 times in 12/2021 both time attempting to pass another vehicle. 2nd time in December the check engine light came on. Scheduled to be seen by a mechanic with the earliest appointment on 12/31/21. Mechanic recommended taking to a licensed Mazda mechanic. Appointment was on 01/07/22. They looked at the car and fixed the issue. Can't remember the issue at that time. By 05/2022, check engine light came back on and car would start slowing down and shutting off when attempting to pass another vehicle. If RPMs would go to high, car would do this. Check engine light came back on. Took to Mazda mechanic on 06/17/22. After several troubleshooting fixes, it was determined I needed a new engine as there were parts broken missing or broken. Did not have my car for 13 weeks. Most recently, on 08/13/23, car shut off in a drive through. Towed to mechanic and needed a new camshaft. Picked up my car on 08/21/23 and within 45 minutes, car shut off while driving up a hill. Towed back to mechanic. This time there are electical issues and an ill fiitting pin. Have to take it to a licensed Mazda mechanic. Having to tow it due to how unsafe it is to drive. Reached out to Mazda with my concerns over saftey and waiting to hear back. Very concerned that this will never be resolved and that this is a very unsafe vehicle to drive.

Aug 22, 2023

On 7/30/23, I was driving home from church, and was driving on the freeway in the fast lane when my 2018 Mazda Cx-5, that was only 5 years old, with only over 33.2K miles on it, started to stall. Thankfully, it didn't come to a complete stop, but slowed down tremendously, and had at least 5 malfunctioning lights come on all at once. The car wouldn't go over 25 miles afterwards. I was very thankful to make it home safely, but this was very alarming, since I never had any issues with that car, and always kept it very well maintained. For a car that was only 5 years old and had only 33.2K miles on it, to experience such a drastic problem, is very confusing. It was very concerning that the car almost came to a complete stop unexpectedly without any warning ahead of time, especially while driving in the fast lane on a freeway. I also took pictures of the malfunctioning lights that came on right after the incident took place. I had the car towed into the dealer the next day, and they told me that it was unusual that my engine would do that. They said that it needed a tune up earlier than expected. I was told that the 3rd cylinder was misfiring, and also when the engine isn't working properly, everything else in the car would shut down. Now, why would a car that's been very well maintained, with only 33.2k miles on it need a tune-up? And I always kept up with the oil changes on time. I found out that there was an engine recall on these particular models, but I was told by Mazda that my VIN # did not qualify; however, what I experienced, did fit the description of the recall. I've since then, decided to trade in the car, because I was just too afraid to continue driving it after this experience. I am however, very upset that I had to give up a car that I invested a lot of money in and took very good care of, and only had 33.2k Miles on it.

The contact owns a 2018 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, the contact became aware of smoke coming from underneath the hood. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the cylinder head was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,400. The contact stated the cylinder head is porous and oil leaks out of it. Also, 6 hydraulic lash adjusters were failing and needed to be replaced.

Engine oil started leaking after I noticed smoke coming from the hood of the car. No warning signs, no check engine light, nothing to indicate any issues until this occurred. Took the car to the dealership who confirmed it was a cracked cylinder head which is now being replaced.

May 30, 2023

Driving down the freeway smoke started coming out of the hood of the car and into the cabin, no warnings or warning lights of any kind, got the car to the Mazda dealer to be inspected. The dealer told me it was 5 months out of warranty and would not be covered its a cracked cylinder head and oil had dripped/leaked onto the manifold causing the smoke. No smoke was coming from the exhaust so the crack only leaked oil to the outside of the cylinder head. There is no oil in my driveway so it happened that day on the road. This is a manufacturing error that Mazda won't take responsibility for.

May 1, 2023

When driving I started to smell a burning oil or rubber smell inside the cabin of the car. When I stopped I could see smoke coming from under the hood. When I was able to park, I opened the hood and could see smoke coming from the engine. There were no warning lights displaying on the dash, no leaking fluid from under the car. I did not feel safe continuing to drive the car without having it seen, so I took it to the closest Mazda dealer service. After inspecting the issue I was told there is a cracked cylinder head that is leaking fluid into the engine and the exhaust and I would need a brand new engine. The service manager said this is a known issue with the 2018-2021 Mazda CX-5. Unfortunately, the warranty that would cover this expired in April 2023 (at the time of writing this, it's May 1, 2023). It should be noted that my CX-5 is only 5 years old with ~37,000 miles on it. I was told by the Mazda service manager that the car is not safe to be driven in this condition and would have to stay in their possession on their lot until I decide if I want to have it fixed.

Crack in cylinder head at 25k caused oil to leak and engine to smoke while driving. No warning lights came on. Dealership replaced the part but how do I know it won't happen again? Mazda knows about this but has not issued a recall or extended the powertrain warranty to cover this known manufacturing defect.

Mar 29, 2023

Oil drained to warning level from full during a vacation. The oil leaked out around head gasket level onto every part of the engine below it and the movement of air caused oil droplets to fall on the exhaust and smoke and also coated entire underneath and most of rear hatch with oil droplets.

2018 Mazda CX-5. While driving a burning smell was detected (oil). Oil leakage noticed when car parked. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a cracked cylinder head. There is a service bulletin stating defect in engine head. Mazda will not cover costs, as its outside 60,000 mile warranty. Quote given of $4085 to fix issue. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 85000.

Dec 31, 2022

Cracked cylinder head, significant oil leaking, no engine lights. No past collisions in vehicles or indicator engine was running hot. Dealership reported they see no history of fault codes on vehicle computer.

Dec 29, 2022

On 12/23 I was driving on the highway approaching exit 43 A-B on I-95 N and the engine oil light came on, I started monitoring the temperature of the car and it was holding steady, neither was it dropping nor was it overheating. I continued driving for a minute more, I am half mile away from home at this point and I smelled burning oil. I pulled the car over and opened up the hood, I turned on the flashlight on my phone and I could see oil on the engine floor. I called up Mazda dealership near me and they were closed for the holidays so I left voicemails. After a couple of days of no answers, I was able to get through to someone and they said they'll take the car in however they can't guarantee if they will be able to even look at it until after the holiday, I speak to the service manager and mention that I have an upcoming trip out of state for Christmas, they said they did not have any loaner cars available either. I got my car towed to the dealership anyways. Next day I get a phonecall from them stating that the oil pump and pressure was fine and they suspect it was the engine head that was causing the leak and that it would cost me 6000$ to fix it. Along with that I need to get my belt tensioner fixed which would be around 680$. The car's estimated value is about 12000$ and I am being asked to pay more than half its value after owning it for 4 years to fix something that was caused by wear and tear. I also did a little digging and I've found that my car falls under ones that have been identified by Mazda to probably have a defective engine head. I am attaching the reports that I have discovered in my research with this submission. I am imploring for assistance in this matter as I cannot afford this expense and I would not like to part ways with something that has been reliable for the last 4+ years. After driving for approximately 1 minute, the vehicle approached a stop sign and car stalled and would not restart. When attempting to restart vehicle, engine was firing but not turning over. Attempted to jump start the vehicle with no success until vehicle was given throttle at which point it restarted. No lights were illuminated prior to the incident, but when the vehicle stalled the battery light and check engine light illuminated.

Hello, I am writing to you for a possible failure post update to the software as specified in Recall 19V-497 dated 09/06/2022 found on the manufacturer's recall website (https://www.mazdarecallinfo.com/). The status is marked as CLOSED. However, I faced the exact problem yesterday as described in the Safety Risk section of the recall details on their website (Summary section on NHTSA website). Below is my best attempt to describe my event: Event: I made a stop at a red light. As it turned green, I accelerated and the engine shut off/stalled. I pushed the engine stop button, switched gear to "P", and the car won't start at all. I was also not able to press the brake or accelerator. I was not able to move the gearstick. Safety risk: My car stalled in the middle of the road. It was a busy junction. If this occurred on a highway, it is possible this may lead to serious injuries or death. After-events: I got the car towed to the dealership where I was told by the service crew that the car worked fine. I was sent a video of multipoint inspection with recommended additional services, a business that I understand. However, they were not able to identify the cause of the engine stall. I decided to check recall information and found this recall (19V-497) with status as CLOSED. But this is the exact problem I faced yesterday. Therefore, either/some/all of the below cases are possible: 1. The status is marked incorrectly as CLOSED 2. The date of recall on the website is misleading; this recall was placed 06/27/2019. 3. My service did not actually service the recall (I service my car every 5000 miles) 4. The recall failed to resolve the engine stall issue. 5. Issue may not be related to failure of this recall remediation; meaning, service did not perform a root-cause inspection of the problem itself. This message is intended to keep you informed in case point (4) holds true.

Driving on highway going 70-75 mph, all of a sudden car starts to stall, check engine light lights up informing me keyless, power steering, vehicle system, smart brake malfunction. I almost crashed as I was on I-55 heading to downtown Chicago. My girlfriend and I could have died.

The contact owns a 2018 Mazda CX-5. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V875000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) in January of 2022 however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the engine was not stable while driving under 30 MPH. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there was no failure and that the issue was normal. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The contact stated that she had an arbitration hearing with the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available. The approximate failure mileage was 17,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

My wife was pulling into a parking place today with her foot on the brake when the car suddenly accelerated, causing it to jump a curb and come to a stop over two large shrubs, which saved her from entering a busy highway and colliding with another car. This caused damage to the front end of the car and wheel wells. She told me she absolutely did not have her foot on the accelerator at the time. The cruse control was off and the driver's side floor mat was not out of position. She was not injured and the air bags did not go off. We have not yet taken this vehicle in for inspection of this defect. It is in the repair shop right now for body work. Our insurance company has been notified. My wife did not report any warning lights. The vehicle is available for inspection. Prior to this episode, I have noticed that at low speeds, the car tends to "surge" with slight pressure on the accelerator but we did not report that to the dealer.

2018 Mazda CX5 with 62000 has an oil leak coming from what the Mazda dealership in Barre VT say it is the cylinder head and gasket have gone faulty for a repair price of $4,191 and that this is a known issue. I had no lights letting me know of an oil leak, the only way I knew it was leaking was because I smelled burnt oil and then looked under the car to see the drops from the leak. My complaint is if Mazda Corporation knows its a known issue and know it can cause a fire why does it not issue a recall. An engine should not be having faulty cylinder and gaskets at only 62,000 miles.

Feb 16, 2022

The engine has a massive oil leak that seems to be more common than Mazda will admit. The safety-related issue is the oil pours out like pancake syrup which can be bad for other drivers, the environment and cause road asphalt to break down at a rapid pace. I also don't have a warranty. When I consulted Mazda all they wanted to do is charge me $7,000 for a new engine from all the research I found on the internet. This is a problem that is affecting many people because when you only have one vehicle and have no way to make money. Most people will just keep adding oil to keep it going. Many customers are left with a car payment with no way out and a car they can't really drive other than short distances. Something needs to be done to hold them accountable for this common problem. I don't know anyone that can afford a $ 40,000-yard brick. If we can hold big pharma accountable why not vehicle manufactories.

There is no recall on this which is a huge safety issue. This has happened to me on highway several times and Mazda will not do anything about it. Very dangerous when you are going 65 on a highway! TSB Number 01-007/19- misfire P0304- of 4th cylinder. Recommendation to replace main silencer due to condensation accumulation in the exhaust baffle. Please search the TSB and misfire code I provided to learn more about it. If you are out of warranty. You are out of luck with Mazda. I will take upon myself to educate others where Mazda could careless to correct this or let the public now.

While driving, my car has stopped two times. first time I crashed on the side of road causing all of my tires and rim busted and had to replace all of them. I had no idea what was going on. second time I was taking kids to school where can just stopped in the middle of road and restarted. Recently it was smelling so I took it to dealer where they said its one of the cylinder and its not safe to drive so they replaced it as its under warranty. While my car is been with Mazda dealer I have been using their loaner car. but then received this letter of Safety recall on similar issue i had in the past and i have been trying to contact Mazda but no success. no email, chat or phone call response. I do not feel safe to drive this car which i bought in 2018, its been having lot of engine related issues. and i do not feel safe to drive this car with my kids in it. I have requested Dealer to let me keep the loner car until they fix safety recall issue. and i am trying to contact Mazda but no response please help.

Massive oil leak onto exhaust manifold, dealership checked and found oil leaking from right rear area of cylinder head. "Per SA/031/21 should replace cylinder head and all gaskets and hardware". My safety and the safety of others was put at risk because if my car had no oil in it, which it was close to, the engine could have seized and caused an accident. The fumes of burning oil made me severely ill as well. The problem was confirmed by the Mazda dealership and has been inspected as well. The only reason I knew something was wrong was because the oil light came on and I contacted the dealership and they said it was a sensor issue and I did not believe that they were correct so I brought it in and they looked at it and said it was a massive oil leak and then told me that the cylinder head assembly needed to be replaced and it was a rare occurance but it had happened due to a casting issue.

This is more of a general notice to fellow Mazda CX-5 drivers with the issue described below: Our car is a 2018 CX-5 with 25K miles. The check engine light came on upon entering the highway at the beginning of the day. Subsequently, stopping by an AutoZone to diagnose it revealed a malfunctioning thermostat. Only then did I realize the car took a long time to reach the operating temperature (for the blue indicator light to go away), and engine temperature would generally stay around 165 and hit 210 only after a very long time of driving, while idling or in traffic. However, our internal heater performance never had any issues while being kept at 75 and blowing mild to moderately. Upon taking the car to our Mazda dealership and requesting a diagnostic service, did we learn it was a malfunctioning coolant control valve that there is a technical service bulletin (# 01-011/21) for such a thing, and covered under our CPO powertrain warranty for replacement.

Engine light came on, pulled over to the side to open the hood. Engine was smoking and oil was leaking all over the floor. Checked the oil dipsitick, still had oil but could smell the burnt oil. Towed the truck to the dealers and said its Engine head cylinder is cracked.

The vehicle stall at very low speed in a parking lot could not restart it was turning over the battery was fine came back 3 hours later and was able to start

Oct 13, 2021

Engine turned off while making a k turn. This is the same issue I experienced in 2019. Mazda issued a recall for software malfunction shortly thereafter and my car was serviced as part of this recall (NHTSA campaign number: 19V497). But now the exact issue happened again last week.

Sep 12, 2021

Will not accelerate at times no matter how far you press down on gas pedal and will stall right after. I will pull over shut off vehicle and restart. This sometimes corrects the problem right away. Other times it lasts longer. System malfunction light randomly comes on.

May 18, 2021

Approximately 9:15am 5/16/21 I was driving on the road when my engine stalled and went out. Was stuck in the middle of the road for a couple of minutes while I tried to restart the car. My vehicle was recalled for this very purpose but 13 days prior I went into the dealership to fix the issue and get a software update. After said update I experienced the recall issue on my vehicle.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS RAINING. I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SPINNING UNCONTROLLABLY. I WAS ADVISED I MOST LIKELY HYDROPLANED. THE VEHICLE FINALLY SLOWED DOWN AND BACKED INTO A GUARDRAIL. ONLY THE RIM OF THE DRIVER SIDE BACK TIRE WAS DAMAGED. THE IMPACT FELT LIKE THE IMPACT FELT WHEN HITTING A CURB TOO HARD. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH A SHOULDER, SO AFTER THE TIRE HIT THE GUARDRAIL, I MOVED TO THE CAR TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD TO BE ON THE SHOULDER. ONCE I ARRIVED AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD, THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND THE BRAKE ASSIST LIGHT CAME ON AND THE POLICE WERE AUTOMATICALLY CALLED. THE CAR WAS TOWED AND THE COLLISION SHOP CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I'M TERRIFIED THAT THE AIRBAGS CAN DEPLOY AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON. I AM ALSO TERRIFIED THAT THEY WILL NOT DEPLOY WHEN THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO SINCE THEY DEPLOYED AT LEAST 10-15 SECONDS AFTER THE IMPACT WITH THE GUARDRAIL OCCURRED.

THE ENGINE IN MY MAZDA CX-5 WAS REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED RECENTLY DUE TO A KNOWN ISSUE IN THE CAR THAT CAUSES THE REAR HEAD TO LEAK. MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 12,000 MILES ON IT SO THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE. MY DEALER EXPLAINED TO ME THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE BY MAZDA AND HE HAD SEEN 5-10 OTHER CARS JUST AT HIS DEALER. WE NOTICED THIS ISSUE WHEN MY SON WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND WE SAW FLUID POURING OUT OF THE BOTTOM. WE HAD HIM STOP THE CAR IMMEDIATELY AND NOT DRIVE. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO GET MAZDA TO ENGAGE TO PROVIDE A BETTER WARRANTY GIVEN IT IS A NEW CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE A BLOWN ENGINE WITH ONLY 12,000 MILES AND IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE BUT THEY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY SUPPORT. I ASKED ABOUT WHY NO RECALL AND THEY JUST STATED THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, ALTHOUGH THE DEALER HIGHLIGHTED MAZDA IS AWARE OF A FLAW IN THE CAR THAT CAUSED THE REAR HEAD TO LEAK. I WOULD LIKE TO SEEK SOME ACTION WITH MAZDA TO MAKE THEM DEAL WITH THIS VERY CONCERNING ISSUE

VEHICLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE WHILE PASSING ON TWO LANE ROAD. CAUSE WAS DETERMINED TO BE WRONG LOGIC IN PCM FOR CYLINDER DEACTIVATION. THIS WORNG LOGIC CAUSED LOW OIL PRESSURE IN THE LIFTER DURING DEACTIVATION WHICH IN TURN CAUSED THE ROCKER ARM TO BECOME DISLODGED RENDERING THE ASSOCIATED VALVE INOPERABLE. THERE IS NO INDICATION TO THE DRIVER OF IF OR WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THE DRIVER IS THEN DRIVING THE CAR IN A VERY DANGEROUS STATE. THE PROBLEM ARISES WHEN THE THE RPMS BECOME ELEVATED TO AROUND 5000 RPMS AND ABOVE. AT THIS POINT THE COMPUTER SENSES TROUBLE WITH THAT CYLINDER DUE TO THE AIR FUEL RATIO NOT BEING CORRECT AND THROWS THE ENGINE INTO LIMP MODE. CREATING A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF YOU ARE TRYING TO PASS OR AVOID SOMETHING WHERE YOU NEED THE ACCLERATION. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!! WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO MY DEALERSHIP THEY DISCOVERED THE MISFIRE ON CYLINDER #4 AND MAZDA HAD THEM REMOVE THE VALVE COVER AND INSPECT. UPON INSPECTION THEY FOUND A ROCKER ARM HAD FALLEN OFF . ACCORDING TO MAZDA MY CAR WAS THE 19TH THAT THEY HAD SEEN WITH THIS PROBLEM. MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP IN OCT. OF 2018. BY THE TIME MY CAR WAS OUT OF THE SHOP THAT NUMBER HAD INCREASED TO 26. MAZDA SAID THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM WAS THE WRONG PCM PROGRAMING. THEY STATED THEY HAVE 2 SUPPLIERS OF PCMS AND ONE OF THEIR SUPPLIERS WAS USING THE WRONG PROGRAM. TO FIX MY CAR THEY REPLACED THE ENGINE AND REFLASHED THE PCM TO THE CORRECT PROGRAM. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF THEY WERE GOING TO REFLASH ALL OF THE VEHICLES ON THEIR LOT THAT HAVE THIS ENGINE AND THEY SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE PERMISSION FROM MAZDA TO DO THIS. I FEEL THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT BECAUSE MAZDA ADMITTEDLY DOES NOT KNOW WHICH CARS HAVE THE WRONG PROGRAM AND A SIMPLE REFLASH OF ALL NEW VEHICLS WOULD FIX THIS SITUATION. THE NUMBER OF THESE BAD VEHICLES IS INCREASNG AND MANY PEPLE COULD BE IN DANGER. MAZDA SHOULD RECALL ASAP

JUNE 4 2018 MY BRAND NEW 2018 MAZDA CX 5 THAT I BOUGHT FROM MARIN MAZDA IN SAN RAFAEL CA DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 68 MPH MY CAR SUDDENLY IS SLOWING DOWN- LIKE SELF BRAKING ON ITS OWN- I WAS NOT BRAKING- THIS WAS HAPPING WHILE I WAS ACCELERATING -IT FELT LIKE I WAS TOWING A LARGE TRACTOR - THIS RESISTANCE KEEPS RECURRING CAUSING SAFETY CONCERN AS WELL AS BAD GAS MILEAGE- WHILE THIS ISSUE IS HAPPENING I GET BETWEEN 15 -17 MILES PER GAL. - TOOK PICTURES OF FUEL MONITORING SYSTEM. HAVING TO MAKE MY WAY TO THE NEAREST EXIT WITH CARS HONKING AT ME WAS DANGEROUS. CAR HAD 350 MILES ON IT. TOOK CAR BACK TO MARIN MAZDA A COUPLE DAYS LATER FOR THIS ISSUE AND BECAUSE IT IS VERY LOUD WITH EXCESSIVE ENGINE NOISE WHEN STARTED EVERYDAY. VERY CONCERNING AS TO IT BEING A NEW CAR. DEALER SAID THAT'S JUST HOW MAZDA'S SOUND IT'S OK WE DIDN'T NOTICE ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. YOUR CAR IS FINE. THE WHEEL RESISTANCE YOU ARE FEELING IS PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY SPRAY STUFF ON THE CAR TO PREVENT RUST BEFORE THEY SHIP VEHICLE, THAT COATING JUST NEEDS TO BURN OFF. SO YOU NEED TO DRIVE IT TO BURN IT OFF. YOUR CAR IS OPERATING THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED TO. REALLY - THIS IS NOT HOW ANY NEW CAR SOUNDS OR DRIVES. 1509 MILES ON MY NEW MAZDA CX 5 PURCHASED AT MARIN MAZDA IN SAN RAFAEL CA. ON MAY 22, 2018 THIS VEHICLE KEEPS HAVING SOME KIND OF WHAT FEELS LIKE A WHEEL RESISTANCE ISSUE. NOT SURE IF IT IS SOMETHING HAPPENING IN THE DRIVE TRAIN OR TRANSMISSION. ALSO NOT SURE IF IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY THE VEHICLE STARTS EVERYDAY - THIS CAR OVER REVS ITSELF WHEN STARTED FIRST THING TICKING VERY LOUDLY, RATTLING , PINGING ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT NOISES. IT IS TICKING SO LOUDLY BECAUSE IT IS OVER REVVING ITSELF AND THERE IS NO OIL THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE YET. EVEN AFTER IT STOPS OVER REVVING AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE EXCESSIVE ENGINE NOISE THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT MARIN MAZDA INSISTS THAT THIS IS NORMAL FOR MAZDA'S TO SOUND LIKE THIS & IS OK. I DON'T BELIEVE HIM. THIS KIND OF START UP EVERYDAY IS GOING TO CAUSE PROBLEMS IN THIS ENGINE QUICKLY AND PREMATURE FAILURE OF THIS CARS ENGINE. MAZDA DEALERS ARE CONCEALING SOME DEFECT THAT IS CAUSING THIS CAR TO START LIKE THIS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISCLOSED TO THE CUSTOMERS BEFORE THEY SELL THIS CAR. BECAUSE IT DID NOT SOUND LIKE THIS WHEN I TEST DROVE IT. THAT IS BECAUSE THEY TAKE YOU INSIDE WHILE THE CAR IS WARMED UP SO YOU CAN'T HEAR IT. THAT IS CONCEALING THIS MAJOR ISSUE FROM THE CONSUMER. THIS IS MAZDA'S STANDARDS OF DOING BUSINESS. CONCEALING KNOWN DEFECTS OF THEIR VEHICLES THEN WHEN A CUSTOMER BRINGS THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR THEY TELL THEM IT IS OPERATING AS IT WAS INTENDED TO BY THE MANUFACTURE. IF THIS IS CORRECT THEN THESE THINGS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRINTED ON THE WINDOW STICKER ON THE CAR NOT CONCEALED AND NOT MENTIONED TO THE CUSTOMERS. THIS IS VERY DECEPTIVE FOR MAZDA, IT'S DEALERS AND REPRESENTATIVES TO HIDE AND LIE ABOUT THE MERCHANTABILITY CONDITION OF THIS VEHICLE. BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO BUY A BRAND NEW CAR THAT SOUNDS LIKE A RATTLE TRAP GHETTO SLED WHEN IT IS STARTED EVERYDAY.

2018 MAZDA CX-5 WHEN I CHECK THE OIL IT IS EXTREMELY OVER FULL AND STRONG ODOR OF GAS WHEN THE DIPSTICK IS PULLED OUT TO BE WIPED OFF. IT IS LIKE 4 INCHES ABOVE THE MAX MARK/ OIL IS VERY THIN. THIS IS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF GAS IN THERE.I WARM UP MY CAR BEFORE LEAVING AND DRIVE IT REGULARLY EVERYDAY. THIS IS VERY BAD I READ THAT GAS IS NOT A LUBRICANT AND WASHES THE OIL OUT OF WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE LUBRICATING ENGINE. IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. CHECKED MANUAL TO MAKE SURE I AM CHECKING IT CORRECTLY. SAYS TO GET TO OPERATING TEMP. WAIT 5 MIN TO LET OIL SETTLE BACK INTO ENGINE THEN CHECK IT. I CONTACT MAZDA CORPS AGAIN, THEY HAVE ME TAKE CAR TO VALLEJO TO INSPECT IT WITH THEIR REGIONAL TECHNICAL SPECIALIST, THEN LEAVE IT THERE FOR REPAIRS. DURING THIS INSPECTION WE DISCOVER OIL LEAKING FROM THE REAR MAIN SEAL. THEIR SPECIALIST CONFIRMS WHERE IT IS LEAKING. I LEAVE MY CAR 5 DAYS. THEN THEY CALL ME TO PICK IT UP TO TAKE IT TO HANSEL MAZDA IN SANTA ROSA. BEFORE I DROP IT OFF FOR REPAIRS I HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AT HANSEL MAZDA. THEN A FEW DAYS LATER I CHECK THE OIL, AGAIN IT IS EXTREMELY OVER FULL WITH STRONG ODOR OF GAS. I TAKE IT TO HANSEL MAZDA TO HAVE IT CHECKED TO CONFIRM THAT THIS IS HAPPENING AND MAKE APP TO HAVE THE OIL LEAK THAT WAS CONFIRMED BY MAZDA'S SPECIALIST AND THIS PROBLEM OF GAS GETTING INTO THE OIL FIXED. I CHECK OIL BEFORE DROPPING IT OFF AT HANSEL, IT IS WAY OVER FULL AND VERY THIN. DROP IT OFF, THEY KEEP IT FOR 5 DAY TOO THEN SAY THERE IS NO OIL LEAK AND NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR. THEY SAID THEY DID ANYTHING TO MY CAR EXCEPT INSPECT IT. IT IS RUNNING DIFFERENT. I CHECK OIL NEXT DAY IT IS VERY THICK AND VERY LOW AT THE MINIMUM MARK ON DIPSTICK. THE OIL HAS NEVER READ THIS LOW ON THE DIPSTICK HANSEL MAZDA MUST HAVE TAKEN A LOT OF OIL OUT TO COUNTER FOR ALL THE EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF GAS GETTING THERE AND ADDED SOMETHING TO TRY TO SEAL THE LEAK. ON 10/12/2018, WHEN I RETURNED TO THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP, I WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER, THAT MY MAZDA CX-5 NEEDED A REPLACEMENT ENGINE WITH ONLY 5,796 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. MY CAR HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE FOR 32 DAYS COLLECTIVELY.

ENGINE MAKES LOUD NOISES AFTER DRIVING AND ACTS LIKE IT'S EXHAUSTED. THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN PARK THE CAR AND GET OUT OF IT. THERE IS A SLIGHT BURNING SMELL (WHICH I WAS TOLD WOULD WEAR OFF AFTER THE FIRST COUPLE HUNDRED MILES), BUT IT'S STILL DOING THIS. IT'S LIKE THE ENGINE OVER HEATED (WHICH NO INDICATOR) AND IT NEEDS TO COOL OFF. THE SMELL IS THE MOST CONCERNING PART.
