ENGINE VVT SOLENOID SEIZED CAUSING COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60MPH. THE DEALER IS ASKING $10,730 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. THE CAR HAS 76,000 MILES.

WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED FROM A CAR DEALERSHIP CALLED HEAVY FOOT MOTORS IN SAN ANTONIO TX. THE VERY NEXT DAY, THE VEHICLE STARTED SMOKING FROM THE HOOD, EXHAUST, AND SMOKE CAME THROUGH THE AIR VENTS. MY WIFE GOING ABOUT 5-10MPH WHILE MAKING A TURN IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN THE SMOKING STARTED. WE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED. THEIR MECHANIC TOOK THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT FOR THREE WEEKS. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND MADE IT MAYBE 5 MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD, AND THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING. SO I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND IT IS CURRENTLY THERE AS OF 4/4/2020. MY SAFETY CONCERN IS THAT THERE IS SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE, EXHAUST, AS WELL AS THROUGH THE AC VENT AND GOING INTO THE VEHICLE. ALSO, WHEN I WENT TO INSTALL MY CHILDREN'S SEAT BELT WE REALIZED THE BACK SEATS SEAT BELTS DO NOT LOCK TO SECURE A CARSEAT. THAT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME. ALSO, UPON PURCHASE I REALIZE THERE WAS NO DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE. WE AGREED IN PURCHASE CONTRACT THAT THE DEALERSHIP WOULD PUT ONE ON IF I PURCHASED IT. I JUST FOUND IT STRANGE HOW YOU COULD SELL A CAR FROM A DEALERSHIP WITHOUT A DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE. THAT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN INCASE SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN AND THAT WAS THE ONLY DOOR TO OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE. I ALSO REALIZE NOW THAT THE TRUNK DOES NOT OPEN, THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. I WILL BE GETTING A COPY OF THEIR MECHANIC'S REPORT WHERE HE STATED THAT IT IS HIS PROFESSIONAL OPINION THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD IN THIS CONDITION. I HAVE REQUESTED A REFUND WHICH INITIALLY,( VERBALLY) I WAS TOLD WE WOULD GET IF IT IN FACT WAS SOLD IN THAT MANNER BUT NOW THEY HAVE BACKED OUT OF THAT. *TR

JUNE 2014, I WAS DRIVING VEHICLE OUT OF TOWN ON VACATION AND IT SUDDENLY BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH LIKE THE PISTONS WERE MISFIRING. MILEAGE WAS 69,700. I PULLED INTO A DEALERSHIP (1 MILE AWAY), DROPPED THE KEYS, AND CALLED TO EXPLAIN IN THE MORNING. LATER, THEY SAID THEY DROVE THE CAR AROUND THE LOT AND THE ENGINE LOCKED UP. THEY TOOK NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAKING IT WORSE AND CHARGED ME FOR CONFIRMING THE LOSS OF COMPRESSION IN THE PISTONS. WE REPLACED THE ENGINE AT GREAT EXPENSE AND TO A POOR RESULT. I FOUND THIS 2007 MODEL HAD A CHRONIC PROBLEM WITH THE VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT) CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO COME OUT OF ADJUSTMENT AND DESTROY THE ENGINE. INSTEAD OF ISSUING A RECALL AND FIXING IT, MAZDA OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 6 YEARS-60,000 MILES. THIS IS ABOUT THE AVERAGE POINT OF FAILURE, MEANING HALF THE PEOPLE ARE NOT COVERED. A FEATURE OF THE TURBO CHARGER IS MAKING THE ENGINE RUN HOT, BURNING THE OIL, SO PEOPLE WERE OFTEN DENIED BECAUSE THE OIL "HAD NOT BEEN CHANGED." INTERESTINGLY, MAZDA SAID THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITH A PREVIOUS OWNER. THAT DATE AND LOCATION COINCIDED WITH A DATE OF SERVICE SHOWN ON CARFAX FOR TYPICAL MAINTENANCE ONLY. THAT DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT POSSIBLY DO ANY WORK WITHOUT IT SHOWING ON CARFAX. I WONDER WHO MAZDA PAID FOR THE WARRANTY CLAIM... I WANT NHTSA TO COMPEL MAZDA TO COMPENSATE OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCED ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO THIS DOCUMENTED DESIGN FLAW.

THE MOTOR STARTED RUNNING HOT AND LOSING POWER AND I SHUT IT OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A GARAGE AND WAS SCANNED ON COMPUTER AND ONLY SHOWED CODE FOR STEERING WHEEL ANGLE. THE MECHANIC PULLED THE COILS AND PLUGS AND CHECKED FOR SPARK AND INSTALLED NEW PLUGS AND ALL COILS OPERATED NORMALLY. COMPRESSION WAS CHECKED AND WAS LOW IN ALL CYLINDERS AROUND 70-80 PSI. PLUGS AND COILS WERE REINSTALLED AND INTERCOOLER PUT BACK ON. CAR IS IN A NO START CONDITION, CAR WAS TAKEN TO CLOSEST MAZDA DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT FIX PROBLEM SINCE SOMEONE HAD BEEN IN THE MOTOR. THE MECHANIC CALLED THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND TOLD THEM EXACTLY WHAT HAD BEEN DONE AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. THE CAR HAS 115000 MILES AND HAS NUMEROUS RECALLS FOR THE VVT TIMING CHAIN, TURBO, ENGINE, AND THEY HAVE TSB'S FOR THESE ISSUES AND STILL PLAY DUMB. I WANT MY MOTOR FIXED BY MAZDA AT MAZDA'S EXPENSE SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY COMPLAINTS AND ISSUES WITH THESE VEHICLES AND MAZDA KNOWS ABOUT IT AND STILL DOESN'T WANT TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT.

MAZDA IS AWARE THAT THE CX-7 IS A HORRIBLY MADE CAR WHICH CAN BE NOTED WITH THE EXTENSIVE LIST OF RECALLS WHICH THE COMPANY HAS PUT OUT SINCE ITS CREATION. ENGINE FAILURE BEING THE BIGGEST CONCERN TO THE SAFETY OF PEOPLE ON THE ROAD. ENGINE FAILURE AT 70MPH ON A BUSY HIGHWAY CAN RESULT IN DEATH. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE TO HAVE MAZDA COMPENSATE ALL OWNERS FOR DEFECTICE VEHICLES. MY ENGINE FAILED AND MAZDA WAS OF NO HELP.

NORTH FRONTIER AUTO (205 8TH AVE SE, PINE CITY, MN) WAS CALLED AND DIAGNOSED THAT AN UNKNOWN SENSOR FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE STARTED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GET THE BATTERY JUMPSTARTED AND DROVE TO NORTH FRONTIER AUTO WHERE THE CODES WERE CLEARED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN AND SOLENOID WERE DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SOLENOID FAILURE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE TIMING CHAIN FAILURE WAS NOT. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY STATED THAT THEY REPAIRED THE TIMING CHAIN. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AXLE, BALL JOINT, AND CONTROL ARM WERE DETACHED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE FAILURES WERE CONFIRMED AND THE TIMING CHAIN WAS CONFIRMED TO BE INCORRECTLY INSTALLED BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 148,000.

AFTER A WHILE THE AIR BAG DASH RED LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON FOR A WHILE. MY CX7 HAS 97,500 MILES AND NOW MY ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE IS A DIESEL ENGINE WHEN I AM AT A STOP TRAFFIC LIGHT. IT SEEMS LIKE THE TIMING CHAIN IS STRETCHING. THEY HAVE NOT ADDED THIS VARIABLE VALVE TIMING DEFECT AS A SAFETY RECALL, AFTER ALL THIS IS A FORD ENGINE AND I WAS EXPECTING THIS MAZDA TO LAST UP TO THE 200,000 MILES.

ALSO, WHILE DRIVING, THE CONTACT SMELLED A BURNING ODOR THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD. THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE SMOKE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE PREVIOUSLY HAD TO USE A GALLON OF OIL PER WEEK. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. DEALER TOLD US THAT IT'S THE TIMING CHAIN WHICH IS THE ENGINE NOW. I CALLED MAZDA FOR AN ENGINE AND IT'S ABOUT $6,291 FOR JUST THE ENGINE NOT EVEN INCLUDED THE LABOR. HAD A VERY BAD EXPLERIENCE WITH MAZDA.

THE CAR IS ALWAYS MAINTAINED AND IT HAS NEVER GIVEN US ANY TROUBLE. DURING OUR DRIVE WE NOTICED SOMETHING WAS WRONG. THE THE CAR STARTED TO FEEL HOT, BUT WE WEREN'T TOO SURE IF IT'S JUST HOT OUT OR IF THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG, BECAUSE THE AC WAS ON. WE PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. AS SOON AS WE DROVE OFF, NOT 2 MINUTES IN, WHEN DRIVER SAID THE GAS PETAL FELT WEIRD, IT DROPPED FROM 50 TO 30 TO 20MPH AND WE HEARD A LIGHT DRILLING NOISE. MAZDA CORPORATION HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF ALL REPORTS I HAVE MADE, AND I DIDN'T KNOW OF THIS SITE TO REPORT UNTIL RECENTLY. I VERY LOOKED INTO TEARS PROBLEM AND APPARENTLY MAZDA HAS CAME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT HAS REROUTED THE AIR PRESSURE TO THE TURBO BY SUPPLYING A VENTILATION KIT THAT COSTS $2,226 JUST FOR PARTS THAT'S INCLUDING THE TURBO AND $826 FOR LABOR..I FEEL THAT IF THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM THEY SHOULD TELL CONSUMERS ABOUT IT IF YOUR DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR LOOSES POWER IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT...AND I HAVE ALSO READ THAT THE TURBO IS A VERY POOR DESIGN. *TR

CHECK ENGINE STILL STAYS ON EVEN AFTER THIS'. NOW FREMONT MAZDA DEALER RECOMMENDING TO REPLACE THE ENGINE [WHICH COSTS AROUND $9K]. LATER DID SOME STUDY ON WEB AND LEARNT THAT MAZDA CX-7 IS VERY WELL KNOWN FOR THIS ISSUES AND THAT IS THE REASON MAZDA HAS DISCONTINUED THE CX-7 MODEL KNOWING INTERNAL TURBO RELATED ISSUES. AS OF TODAY, 2/12/16, THE SAME NOISE, BUT LOUDER, STILL OCCURS WHEN I START THE CAR AND DRIVE. THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON AND WAS ON WHEN I TOOK IT IN. NO MENTION OF WAS MADE. WHILE DRIVING ON COLORADO STATE HIGHWAY 91 AT APPROX 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DIED. THE ENGINE CEASED WORKING, ALL SYSTEMS CEASED IMMEDIATELY. I WAS UNABLE EVEN TO SAFELY PULL THE CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER, THE LOSS OF POWER WAS SO COMPLETE AND SO SUDDEN. THE VEHICLE WAS 200 MILES FROM MY HOME, AND 250 MILES FROM THE CLOSEST DEALER AT THAT POINT, SO I HAD IT TOWED TO THE CLOSEST GARAGE THAT WOULD LOOK AT IT, ABOUT 60 MILES AWAY. THAT GARAGE EVALUATED THE CAR AND STATED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BROKEN AND A NEW ENGINE WOULD BE REQUIRED, AT APPROXIMATELY $6,000 TO $8,000. I PHONED THE CLOSEST MAZDA DEALER, IN DENVER, AND ASKED WHAT THEY RECOMMENDED. THEY ALSO STATED THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED, AT A COST OF $8,000 TO $9,000. I CONTACTED THE GARAGE CLOSEST TO MY HOME AND ASKED THEIR ADVICE. THEY STATED THEY HAD EXPERIENCE REPLACING THE TIMING CHAINS AND REPAIRING ENGINE DAMAGE IN OTHER VEHICLES AND THAT THEY COULD DIAGNOSE WHETHER THAT WAS AN OPTION. THEIR GUESS ON COST WAS BETWEEN $2,000 AND $4,000 IF THE REPAIR WERE POSSIBLE AND THERE WAS NOT TOO MUCH DAMAGE TO VALVES. SINCE THE SHOP THAT IS 25 MILES FROM MY HOME RECOMMENDED REPAIR AT LESS THAN 1/2 THE COST OF THE DEALER 200 MILES FROM MY HOME, I ELECTED TO TAKE IT THERE. UPON RESEARCH I FOUND 1. THE VIN # IS ONE IN A SERIES WITH KNOWN TIMING CHAIN FAILURE, AND THAT A HEAVIER DUTY ONE HAD BEEN ISSUED TO REPLACE; 2. THE DEALER HAD REPLACED THE VVT PREVIOUSLY AND SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THE TIMING CHAIN AT THAT TIME ACCORDING TO SERVICE BULLETIN 01-012/12, BUT DID NOT REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN; 3. THE FAILURE HAPPENED 4 DAYS AFTER THE EXPIRATION OF THE ENGINE WARRANTY AND 7,000 MILES OVER THE 7YR/70,000 MI PERIOD; 4. MAZDA WOULD NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY SINCE THE REPAIRS WERE DONE BY AN INDEPENDENT SHOP, NOT A DEALER. MAZDA KNOWS THAT THIS VIN# IS IN A RANGE OF VEHICLES WITH THIS ISSUE BUT WILL NOT FIX.

I SMELLED SMOKE COMING FROM THE INSIDE COMPARTMENT OF THE CABIN AREA OF THE CAR. I ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES BUT THE CAR WON'T STOP! I CHANGED THE OIL IN THE VEHICLE, AND HAVE THE VEHICLE SERVED ON A REGULAR BASIS, BUT NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS LIKE THAT. I DID RESEARCH ON THIS VEHICLE AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH OTHER OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. MAZDA CX-7, 2007 - FOUR DAYS AND 7,000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT SUDDENLY AND THE CAR DIED. THE VIN NUMBER ON THE CAR IS IN THE RANGE OF NUMBERS FROM 2007 THAT HAVE REPORTED THE SAME AND SIMILAR DEFECTS MANY TIMES FROM OTHER CAR OWNERS. THE VVT ACTUATOR FAILED AND WAS REPLACED BY DEALER PENKHUS MAZDA UNDER WARRANTY IN 2009, BUT THE CHAIN WAS NOT REPLACED. RESEARCH INTO MAZDA SERVICE BULLETINS SB-10044209-4285 AND 01-012-12 INDICATE THAT THE TIMING CHAIN SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT THE TIME SINCE THE VIN NUMBER INDICATES THE VEHICLE WAS PRODUCED PRIOR TO A MAZDA TIMING CHAIN MODIFICATION DATE OF MAY 1, 2009 (VIN #'S BELOW JM3ER...300119). MY VEHICLE FALLS INTO THIS GROUP. MAZDA ISSUED A WARRANTY EXTENSION TO 7 YEARS, 70,000 MILES FOR THIS FAULTY TIMING CHAIN IN JANUARY 2012 BUT IS NOW REFUSING TO HONOR ANY WARRANTY ON THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE TIMING CHAIN. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO NEAREST SHOP AT THE TIME, +/-50 MI. SHOP SAID TIMING CHAIN WAS BROKEN AND A NEW ENGINE PROBABLY NEEDED. ESTIMATED COST $8,000. I PHONED NEAREST DEALERS IN DENVER AND COLORADO SPRINGS TO DISCUSS WITH SERVICE DEPARTMENTS. THEY ADVISED IF IT WAS TIMING CHAIN FAILURE IT COULD EASILY BE A NEW ENGINE AT $8 - 10,000. MY HOME IS BETWEEN 175 AND 225 MILES FROM THE NEAREST DEALER. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL SHOP WHO ADVISED ME TO CONTACT KRACL AUTOMOTIVE IN GLENWOOD SPRINGS. KRACL SAID THEY WOULD DEFINITELY LOOK AT IT, DETERMINE CAUSE OF FAILURE AND ATTEMPT TO REPAIR PRIOR TO RECOMMENDING TOTAL ENGINE REPLACEMENT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED ANOTHER 100 MILES TO GLENWOOD SPRINGS, 22 MILES FROM MY HOME, AND THE CLOSEST CAPABLE REPAIR SHOP. KRACL ADVISED ME THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BROKEN AND TWO VALVES WERE DAMAGED BUT NOT THE CYLINDER HEAD. REPAIR ESTIMATED AT +/- $4,000. I WAS INFORMED YESTERDAY THAT MY TURBO AND OTHER UN-MENTIONED PARTS HAD BROKEN. I THEN WAITED TO HEAR BACK AS TO WHETHER THE WARRANTY THAT I PAID AN ADDITIONAL $2,000 FOR AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE WOULD COVER IT, IT WILL NOT COVER THIS AND THEY STATED THAT THE TURBO WAS NOT CONSIDERED A PART OF THE "POWERTRAIN" SO THEY QUOTED ME A PRICE OF UPWARDS OF $3300 TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE THAT I HAVE HAD FOR 7 MONTHS. THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PARTS TO FIX IT WHICH RESULTED IN HAVING TO RENT A CAR FOR 5 DAYS TO RETURN HOME AND BACK TO PICK UP VEHICLE ON SATURDAY. LATER FOUND OUT THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE COMPRESSOR FOR 5 YRS/60K MILES WHICH MEANT THAT THERE WAS NO COVERAGE ON MY VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS 7 YEARS OLD EVEN THOUGH IT HAD ONLY 49K MILES ON IT. TOTAL COST WITH TOWING, THE CAR RENTAL AND REPAIR WAS $1667. THEY ALSO "FOUND" THE STARTER WAS BAD AND A BLOWN FUSIBLE LINK FOR WHICH THEY CHARGED ANOTHER $648. MOST TIMES, THEY WOULD RESET THEMSELVES. MOVING ALONG, RECENTLY ON 07/15/14, I WAS RETURNING HOME FOR THE EVENING AND THE CAR SHUT DOWN ON ME. THE STEERING CONTROL WAS HARD BUT I KEPT IT FROM CRASHING THE WALL ON LINCOLN DR. AS I FLAGGED THE TRAFFIC TO PROCEED, I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR ONLY TO ADVANCE TO THE END OF THE DRIVE. BEFORE I REACHED HOME, THE CAR SHUT DOWN 5-TIMES. FINALLY REACHING HOME IT SAT UNTIL I WERE ABLE TO GET IT TO ANOTHER DEALER, CLOSER TO HOME. HOW ABOUT, THE ENGINE IS SHOT, THE RADIATOR HAD A LEEK, I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT AND THE DEALER SAYS, "IT WILL NOT START, NOW". I DROVE IT TO THE DEALER. OIL LIGHT WAS ON AND SMELLING AS IF I BURNED SOMETHING, WHILE IT KNOCKED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT WERE ON WHEN IT CUT-OFF, AS I PULLED INTO THEIR DRIVEWAY. I RESTARTED THE CAR FOUND A PARKING SPACE. ONCE THE IGNITION SHUTDOWN, THE COOLING FANS CAME ON. DILEMMA, I LEASED THE CAR NEW IN 2007. I BOUGHT IT, WITH PRESENT CAR PAYMENTS UNTIL 2016, IN 2010. TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT RESULTED IN A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND ITS HOUSING. REPLACING THE TIMING CHAIN RETURNED THE ENGINE TO PRODUCTION LINE SPECS, THAT WERE TOO MUCH FOR A WORN FUEL PUMP TO HANDLE. THE INCREASED PRESSURE TO THE FUEL PUMP SHATTERED IT INTO NUMEROUS PIECES LESS THAN 100 MILES AFTER THE TIMING CHAIN WAS REPLACED. SAID PIECES BECAME LODGED INSIDE THE CAM SHAFT AND ENDED UP BENDING ALL OF THE VALVES. THE NECESSITATED A COMPLETE VALVE JOB, REMOVING AND REPLACING THE CYLINDER HEAD, FUEL PUMP, CAM SHAFT AND OIL CONTROL CALVE. AT WORST, ALL TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENTS SHOULD REQUIRE A FUEL PUMP CHANGE IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS THAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS. *JS

THIS PARTICULAR MODEL YEAR JUST SEEMS TO BE A LEMON ALL AROUND. EVEN THE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE FAILING. AND THE COMPANY IS NOT HOLDING THEMSELVES RESPONSIBLE AT ALL. I'VE RESEARCH THIS PARTICULAR YEAR AND FOUND MORE THAN ADEQUATE EVIDENCE THAT THESE VEHICLES ARE LEMONS. THE SAME ISSUES ARE BEING REPORTED ACROSS THE WORLD! AND MAZDA IS DOING NOTHING. THE HAZARDS THEY ARE CAUSING ARE TREMENDOUS! SOME FAILURES HAVE RESULTED IN FIRES, QUICK LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AT HIGH SPEEDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS. MY CAR WAS PAID OFF LESS THAN A WEEK BEFORE THIS SECOND COMPRESSOR MALFUNCTIONED. HOW MANY CARS HAVE HAD 2 AC COMPRESSORS IN A MATTER OF 6-7 YEARS?? AND HOW MANY ENGINES CAN COMPLETELY FAIL IN THE MATTER OF 7 YEARS? EVERYDAY WHEN I START MY CAR IT SOUNDS LIKE A DIESEL ENGINE; POPPING AND CLANKING NOISES PROJECT FOR THE HOOD LIKE IT'S A SEMI. THAT'S JUST BAD CRAFTSMANSHIP AND BAD BUSINESS. MAZDA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THE RECALLS SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO 100,000 AND 10 YEARS AT LEAST. THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE BUILT TO LAST. I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2007 MAZDA CX-7 IN APRIL 2007, THE VEHICLE STARTED EXPERIENCING ENGINE PROBLEMS IN SEPTEMBER 2007, I WAS TOLD IT MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE VVT (VARIABLE VALVE TIMING) AND TIMING CHAIN. THE VVT WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP A SHORT TIME LATER; HOWEVER, NOT THE TIMING CHAIN. AFTER THE VVT WAS REPLACED MY VEHICLE STARTING TO EXPERIENCE THICK WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPES. MY DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN ADVISED THIS WAS DUE TO A TURBO ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE. ALL OF THIS OCCURRED WITHIN THE FIRST COUPLE YEARS OF MY OWNERSHIP. I HAVE HAD THE TURBO REPAIRED (OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE), AS WELL AS THE VVT (2 TIMES) AND THE TIMING CHAIN IT ALL SEEMS TO NO AVAIL. THE CAR IS REVVING VERY HIGH ON COLD START UPS AND IS NOW EXPERIENCING A CODE AS OF THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS THAT IS STATING THERE IS A DECARBONIZATION ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE THAT IS LINKED TO THE TIMING CHAIN. OF COURSE THIS IS NOW THE 5TH TIME THIS VEHICLE ENGINE WILL BE OPENED UP TO DIAGNOSE ONE OF THE KNOWN ISSUES THAT MAZDA NORTH AMERICA IS AWARE OF. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE SINCE 2007, AND HAS JUST OVER 120,000 MILES ON IT. WE TOOK IT TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP THIS MORNING, AND THEY INFORMED US THAT THE AC COMPRESSOR HAD SEIZED AND IT, ALONG WITH THE BELT (IN ADDITION TO ANY OTHER PARTS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED) NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED AND THE REFRIGERANT FLUSHED/REFILLED. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER ACS CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND CONFIRMED THAT THE ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE TURBO. BEFORE TAKING THE TRIP ON 4-18-2013 I TOOK MY CAR THE MAZDA OF MESQUITE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I HEARD A TICKING NOISE AND THE TECHNICIAN INDICATED THAT THE NOISE WAS NORMAL. ALSO THE TECHNICIAN PERFORMED MSP 36 REFLASHED PCM WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE AND CLEARED ALL FAULT CODES SINCE THERE WAS A RECALL. THREE WEEKS LATER THE ENGINE GOES OUT. THE MANUFACTURE WARRANTY EXPIRED, BUT HAVE A IN SERVICE WARRANTY. THE IN SERVICE WARRANTY AGENCY DENIED THE CLAIM INDICATING THAT IT WAS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR OF THE ENGINE FAILURE. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND ALSO EMAILED THE MANUFACTURE TO EXPRESS MY CONCERN AND BOTH AGENCIES DIRECTED ME BACK TO THE IN SERVICE WARRANTY. BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND IN SERVICE WARRANTY ARE NOT WILLING TO ASSIST IN THE COST BEING THAT THE CX7 MODEL IS A LEMON IN MY OPINION. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CLAIMS AGAINST THIS MODEL BY OTHER CONSUMERS IN WHICH WAS CONFIRMED BY THE EMPLOYEES AT THE GEORGETOWN ROGER BEASLEY MAZDA DEALERSHIP. THE EMPLOYEES INDICATED THAT THE CX7 MODEL HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS THAT IS WHY THE CX5 REPLACED THE CX7 MODEL. THEY INFORMED ME THE CARS TIMING BELT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THERE WAS SLUDGE ON THE ENGINE. IRONICALLY I HAD JUST HAD MY OIL CHANGED AND MY ENGINE CLEANED OF SLUDGE LESS THAN 2 WEEKS PRIOR. WE SUBMITTED THE CLAIM THROUGH MY EXTENDED WARRANTY AND AFTER A WEEK GOT IT APPROVED. THE MORNING I WAS SLATED TO PICK UP THE CAR I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THERE WAS STILL AN ISSUE THAT THEY NEEDED THE CAR LATER. A FEW DAYS LATER THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED MY ENGINE REPLACED. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY DENIED THE ORIGINAL CLAIM NOW AND THE CLAIM FOR A NEW ENGINE DUE TO POOR UPKEEP, THOUGH I HAVE MY RECORDS OF MAINTENANCE. I HAVE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 1 AND 1/2 YEARS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I AM NOW IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE CAR TO ANOTHER MECHANIC, BEAR IN MIND I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND AM PREGNANT. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE I HAVE DISCOVERED TONS OF ISSUES WITH THE 2007 CX7 WHICH CAN RESULT IN SEVERE SAFETY ISSUES, ENGINES LOSING POWER ETC. MAZDA IS NOT OWNING UP TO ANY OF IT. MY RESEARCH INTO THIS ISSUE ON THIS MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR, HAS PROVEN THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR MAZDA AND THEY HAVE EXTENDED THEIR STANDARD WARRANTY COVERAGE TO OWNERS FOR ADDITIONAL MONTHS AND/OR MILES. I WAS EXPERIENCING A SHAKE IN THE STEERING WHEEL AT HIGH SPEEDS, WHICH WE ATTRIBUTED TO A TIRE/WHEEL/ALIGNMENT ISSUE. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME I NEEDED THE TIMING CHAIN (AND ASSORTED PERIPHERALS) REPLACED...FOR THE SECOND TIME IN TWO YEARS. THE FIRST TIME WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY, BUT ONLY AFTER I PRODUCED THE RECORDS TO SHOW THE OIL HAD BEEN CHANGED REGULARLY. THE SECOND TIME WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IT COST $1500 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY THAT WAS LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD. THE DEALERSHIP HAS RECOMMENDED IGNORING THE MANUAL ON OIL CHANGES (EVERY 7500 MILES) AND CHANGING IT EVERY 3000 TO HOPEFULLY CATCH ANY FURTHER ISSUES. THEY SAID BECAUSE THE TURBO RUNS VERY HOT, IT BURNS UP THE OIL QUICKLY. MY CAR WAS VERY LOW WHEN I TOOK IT IN. THEY ALSO SAID THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO ON DUE TO LOW OIL, BUT ONLY FOR LOW OIL PRESSURE. THE OTHER ISSUE I HAD WAS RELATED TO THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. I HAVE THE AUTO-DIM WITH COMPASS, WHICH WAS INSTALLED BY THE DEALER WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. IT HAS FAILED TWICE AND BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THE SECOND TIME WAS AROUND 65K MILES. LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER MY WARRANTY RAN OUT, THE ENTIRE MIRROR FELL OFF THE WINDSHIELD. IN THE EARLY 2007 MODELS, THE CLIP THAT HOLDS THE MIRROR CAN NOT BE REPLACED IF IT BREAKS. I HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD REPLACED IN ORDER TO RE-ATTACH THE MIRROR. I WAS TOLD EVEN THOUGH THE MIRROR WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED SINCE IT HAD JUST BEEN REPLACED, THE WINDSHIELD WAS NOT COVERED. THAT WAS ANOTHER $250 TO REPLACE A PERFECTLY GOOD WINDSHIELD JUST BECAUSE THE CLIP COULDN'T BE FIXED. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE I DISCOVERED HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT A BROKEN TIMING CHAIN THAT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE. SOME OF THESE COMPLAINTS WERE AS EARLY AS 30,000 MILES. THERE WAS EVEN DISCUSSION ABOUT A RECALL ON THE TIMING CHAIN FROM MAZDA SAYING THAT IT WAS DEFECTIVE BUT MAZDA WAS NOT ALWAYS HONORING THIS RECALL. OBVIOUSLY BASED ON THESE COMPLAINTS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING CHAIN IN THE 2007 CX-7 THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. I HAVE CHECKED SEVERAL ONLINE FORUMS AND HAVE SEEN THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR 2007 CX7 BETWEEN 25K AND 55K MILES. DRIVING EAST ACROSS THE BAY BRIDGE FROM SF, THE ENGINE MADE A WHEEZING NOISE. AFTER A MILE THE POWER DROPPED, AND THE CAR WOULD ONLY TRAVEL AT 30 MPH. NO ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON TO WARN OF THIS, EVEN DURING THE EVENT. AT THIS POINT IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT IT NEEDED REPAIR ATTENTION, AND WE FOUND A MAZDA DEALER/REPAIR SHOP RELATIVELY CLOSE BY TO DRIVE IT TO. ONCE THEY HAD A CHANCE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, THEY REPORTED TO US THAT ENGINE 'SLUDGE' WAS TO BLAME. THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BEEN RUBBING, AND THE VVT ACTUATOR HAD BEEN COMPROMISED. TURBO GALLEYS WERE ALSO PLUGGED. IN JAN. OF THIS YEAR, MAZDA POSTED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR CX-7'S TIMING CHAIN AND VVT. HOWEVER, THE DEALER INFORMED US AFTER CHECKING WITH MAZDA THAT WE WERE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE WARRANTY. GAPS IN OUR HISTORY OF REPAIR WAS THE GIVEN REASON. AFTER AN APPEAL, THE REP FROM MAZDA SAID THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY HAD REVIEWED THE CLAIM AND AGAIN DECLINED TO HELP. WE HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CX-7 OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I CALLED THE MAZDA MANUFACTURE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE TIMING CHAIN PROBLEM AND THAT'S WHY THEY SENT OUT LETTERS FOR AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE TIMING CHAIN PROBLEM. THE ALSO STATED THAT THE ONLY WAY THEY WOULD REPLACE THE PART IS IF I COULD SHOW RECORDS OF EVERY OIL CHANGE THAT WAS DONE ON THE CAR FROM THE TIME OF PURCHASE. BEING THAT I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED I AM NOT ABLE TO SHOW ALL THE OIL CHANGE RECORDS THEY REQUEST. THE POINT IS THAT THE MANUFACTURE RECOGNIZED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING CHAIN. AFTER CONSULTING WITH MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE, I WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A MAZDA DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THOMPSON MAZDA IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BROKEN AND THAT THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. MAZDA HAD PROVIDE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE TIMING CHAIN FOR 7 YEARS OR 70,000 MILES. THE WARRANTY INDICATED THAT IF THERE WAS A TIMING CHAIN NOISE TO BRING INTO A MAZDA DEALER TO HAVE IT SERVICED UNDER THE WARRANTY. AT NO TIME WAS THERE A NOISE EXPERIENCED FROM THE ENGINE. MAZDA ALSO INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD TO HAVE SERVICE RECORDS TO BE COVERED. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED IN APRIL 2011 WE ONLY HAD OUR SERVICE RECORDS AND THE CAR FAX SERVICE RECORDS. MAZDA INDICATED THAT BECAUSE THERE WAS A GAP IN THE SERVICE RECORDS, BETWEEN 31000 MILES (THE LAST RECORD SHOWN BY CAR FAX) AND 54000 MILES (WHEN WE HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE), THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE COST OF REPLACING THE ENGINE. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT MAZDA KNEW THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE TIMING CHAIN AND HAD THEY BEEN PROACTIVE IN RECALLING THE VEHICLE AND REPLACING THE TIMING CHAIN THE ENGINE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A MORE SIGNIFICANT COST OF $7,200. *TR

LATER, HAVING RESEARCHED THIS, IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND SERIOUSLY PREMATURE FOR THIS MILEAGE AND FOR A CAR DRIVEN MODERATELY AND ON WHICH ALL RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED (BY THIS DEALER). I'VE READ ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS ONLINE AND EVERYONE IS SAYING SLUDGE BUILD UP AND MAZDA WANTS THE RECEIPTS FOR ALL OF THEIR OIL CHANGES. THE COMMON ISSUE SEEMED TO BE A PART CALLED A VVT ACTUATOR. NO RECALLS OR SERVICE ADVISORIES HAD BEEN ISSUED FOR ENGINE PARTS AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER, IN JANUARY 2012, AN ENTIRE HALF-DECADE AFTER THE VEHICLE ROLLED OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE, WE RECEIVED A 'VARIABLE VALVE TIMING NOISE AND TIMING CHAIN NOISE WARRANTY EXTENSION' NOTICE BY MAIL FROM MAZDA. A MONTH OR SO AFTER WE RECEIVED THE NOTICE, THE VEHICLE BEGAN LEAKING OIL. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE INTO A ROGER BEASLEY MAZDA CENTER AND HAD IT EXAMINED. THE OIL COOLER ON THE VEHICLE WAS BEGINNING TO FAIL. WE EXPLAINED THE NOTICE THAT WE RECEIVED IN THE MAIL AND THEY WERE ALREADY WELL AWARE OF THESE ISSUES. WE WERE TOLD THE ENGINE HAD ENGINE SLUDGE AND WITH IT BEING A SECOND-OWNER VEHICLE, WE DID NOT HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION TO PROVE THAT REGULAR OIL CHANGES HAD BEEN PERFORMED. INSTEAD, ALL REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS WOULD COME FROM OUR OWN POCKETS. THE RESULT ENDED UP BEING A NEED TO REPLACE THE VVT ACTUATOR, THE TIMING CHAIN, THE OIL COOLER, AND REPLACING ALL OF THE GASKETS. THE TECHNICIAN SHOWED US A SIDE-BY-SIDE OF THE CURRENT TIMING CHAIN AND THE NEW REPLACEMENT ' THE USED CHAIN HAD LITERALLY STRETCHED TO BE ABOUT HALF-AN-INCH LONGER THAN THE REPLACEMENT. WE DROVE OFF THE LOT AND HOPED THAT THE PROBLEMS HAD BEEN SOLVED. WITHIN TWO MONTHS OF THE REPAIRS, THE ENGINE BEGAN MAKING A HIGH-PITCHED WHINING NOISE. MY WIFE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP THAT DAY WHILE AT WORK AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT IN. ON THE WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHICH IS LESS THAN TEN MILES AWAY, THE VEHICLE DIED ON THE FREEWAY. VVT AND TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT NEEDED MAZDA KNEW THESE TO BE DEFECTIVE PARTS BUT ONLY ISSUED WARNING TO ME JUST THIS MONTH AND NOW THAT IM OVER THE MILEAGE I HAVE TO PAY FOR COST OF REPLACING BOTH ... WHY HASN'T THE SAFETY BOARD LOOKED INTO THIS VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE SOMEONE TO LOSE THEIR LIVES ..... THIS MOST BE ADDRESSED NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *TT
PURCHASED 2007 MAZDA CX-7 WITH 65,000 MILES. AT THE TIME WAS TOLD IT HAD A NEW TURBO. HAD THE VEHICLE 2 MONTHS AND THE ERG VALVE DIED (TECHNICIAN STATED THEY SHOULD LAST 100K MILES) WAS REPLACED AT MY COST OF $850. WHEN REPLACING THE ERG VALVE THEY ALSO NOTICED A WORN TUBE THAT WILL COST AN ADDITIONAL $180 AT MY COST. THEY ALSO NOTICED THE NEW TURBO WAS SMOKING AND THIS WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE FROM MAZDA TO 70K MILES (I WAS AT 68,5000). THEY ARE ADDING A WHOLE NEW PCV VENT KIT AT DEALER EXPENSE). NOW I AM HEARING A LOUD TICKING NOISE WHENEVER I TURN ON THE A/C WHICH COULD BE EITHER THE VVT TIMING CHAIN OR THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. BOTH ARE KNOWN DEFECTS OF 2007 CX-7'S AND WILL COST ABOUT $1,000 TO FIX FOR EACH ISSUE. THE TIMING CHAIN IS COVERED UNTIL 70K MILES SO I'M TRYING TO GET THIS FIXED BY THE DEALERSHIP NOW BEFORE I RUN OUT OF WARRANTY. HOWEVER, THE AC ISSUES WERE ONLY COVERED TO 60 K MILES AND I AM BEYOND THAT COVERAGE SO I WILL HAVE TO FIX THAT AT MY COST. IF YOU DO A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH YOU WILL SEE EXTENSIVE DOCUMENTATION OF THESE SAME ISSUES AMONGST MANY MAZDA OWNERS. MAZDA REFUSES TO RECALL SUCH PARTS AND ONLY THIS YEAR (4-5 YEARS LATER) DID THEY EXTEND WARRANTY COVERAGE ON SOME KNOWN DEFECTS KNOWING THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD BE BEYOND THE WARRANTY LIMIT OF 60/70K MILES. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF ENGINES SEIZING DUE TO THE AC AND TIMING CHAIN ISSUE. I AM QUITE FRANKLY TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND SEEKING A VERY COMPREHENSIVE EXTENDED WARRANTY TO HOLD ME OVER UNTIL I CAN TRADE IT IN AND GET SOMETHING RELIABLE! I WORK FOR A CAR DEALERSHIP SO I KNOW THAT THESE ISSUES ARE LEGITIMATE WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR

MY 2007 MAZDA CX-7 STARTING MAKING A POPPING NOISE AND BEGAN LOSING POWER ON APRIL 13, 2012. I DROVE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE TIMING CHAIN AND TURBO CHARGER ARE BAD AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. MY CAR HAS 80,477 MILES ON IT AND THEREFORE, NOTHING IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND I CANNOT PRODUCE ALL OIL CHANGE RECEIPTS. THUS, IT IS GOING TO COSTS ME $3,000 TO GET FIXED. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN MAZDA FOR NOT FIXING A DEFECT THAT THEY ARE CLEARLY AWARE OF, REGARDLESS OF THE MILEAGE! I NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER AND I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL MAZDA CUSTOMER, PURCHASING 5 MAZDA'S OVER THE LAST 12 YEARS! I TRAVEL WITH MY JOB SO I DO PUT A LOT OF MILES ON A VEHICLE (AVERAGING 2,000 MILES PER MONTH) BUT I FIND IT UTTERLY RIDICULOUS THAT A CAR HAS MAJOR DEFECTS AT 80,000 MILES!
