Brake booster failure. The power assisted braking has stopped working. There are no leaking vacuum hoses and the check valve is working. The brake pedal travels to the floorboard.
The contact owns a 2011 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the brakes. The contact stated that the brake pedal was firm and difficult to depress while attempting to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 67,000.

Braking trouble recent in weeks in 2011 Mazda CX-9 vehicle. Had mechanic (Euro Motorsports in Chagrin Falls OH) check it out. Turned out to be a faulty Brake Booster. Mechanic test drove car; braking failed and he almost rear-ended another vehicle. He found on line a Mazda service notice dating from April 4, 2014 called SSP93. Mazda issued an extended warranty of 7 years or 90,000 miles, whichever came first, to have defective part replaced by an improved part. But we were never informed by Mazda of Bedford, where we bought the vehicle. Currently, our vehicle has about 83,000 miles. Never knew there was a problem until recent trouble with the braking. There are thousands of CX-5, Cx-7, and Cx-9 vehicles in operation in U.S. right now; probably many owners have no idea there is a brake defect in their vehicles that could cause a serious accident, potentially fatal. Mazda should have done a recall in 2014, not an extended warranty. Although Brake Boosters are supposedly good for at least 150,000 miles of driving, our brake failure at around 83,000 miles proves otherwise. NHTSA should order Mazda to recall all vehicles with the defective brake part and replace them at Mazda's expense, probably hundreds of dollars each time. We do not want to have our brake booster replaced by our regular Euro Motosports mechanics because a recall must typically be repaired by the dealer. We already filed a complaint with State of Ohio Attorney General's office, but their people say the complaint must first go through BBB. No urgency on their part at all, even when informed potentially fatal flaw in the brakes. To avoid dangerous accidents, NHTSA should act more swiftly. Thanks.

AS A RESULT, THE DRIVER REAR ENDED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT CAUSING A FIVE VEHICLE COLLISION AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. NONE OF THE FRONTAL AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE POLICE WERE PRESENT AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED. OUR VEHICLE HAS LOST BRAKING POWER AND IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ANY DISTANCE NOW. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP AND KEEP IT STOPPED ONCE IT HAS STOPPED MOVING WITHOUT PUTTING IT IN PARK. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THIS IS IN RELATION TO MAZDA SSP 93. MAZDA HAS ADVISED THAT IS IT MY RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE THIS VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, PAY FOR REPAIR LABOR, AND PAY FOR A RENTAL CAR WHILE REPAIRS ARE BEING MADE. WHEN TRYING TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AS USUAL. EVEN WITH PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD, THE STOPPING DISTANCE INCREASED BY AT LEAST 30 FEET WHICH PLACED ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THIS IS WORSE IN HOT CONDITIONS. I NOTICED THAT THIS WAS INVESTIGATED, MAZDA ISSUED A SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM WHICH ENDED IN 2015. THE LETTER ISSUED AT THAT TIME SAID IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE ACTION UNLESS THERE WAS A PROBLEM AT THAT TIME. MAZDA SHOULD EXTEND THE SERVICE PROGRAM BECAUSE THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE.

I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM BRAKING ON MY CX9 TO WHERE I HAD TO ALMOST STAND ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP. ADDED BRAKE FLUID HOPING THAT WOULD HELP BUT DID NOT. TOOK IT TO MAZDA DEALERSHIP IN BUFORD,GA AND THEY CONFIRMED THE BRAKE BOOSTER WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND STRONGLY RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT ASAP. THEY EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND MAZDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 90K MILES. THE PROBLEM FOR ME WAS MY '11 CX9 HAD 107K. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED DUE TO MY PERSONAL SAFETY. A COUPLE DAYS LATER I CALLED MAZDA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AND VOICED MY DISAPPOINTMENT THAT THIS PART WAS NEVER RECALLED AND PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AROUND IN UNSAFE CX9'S. THEY DID CONFESS THAT IF I WOULD HAVE CALLED THEM 'BEFORE' MY REPAIR THEY COULD HAVE REVIEWED THE ISSUE AND PERHAPS OFFSET SOME OF THE COST. IN DEC. 2018, I HAD MY 2011 MAZDA CX-9 TO A MAZDA DEALER SERVICE SHOP FOR WHAT I FELT LIKE A SPONGY BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD BE THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR'S BRAKES. AFTER A FEW MONTHS, WHILE THE SYMPTOM PERSISTED, I FOUND OUT THERE IS A KNOW ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE BOOSTER, WHICH MAZDA ACKNOWLEDGED AND ISSUED A WARRANTY EXTENSION (WHICH IS EXPIRED NOW). TWO DAYS AGO, WHILE TRAVELING IN TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY, I HAD TO STOP THE CAR DUE TO A SUDDEN TRAFFIC JAM AND I FELT THE BRAKES BEING INSUFFICIENTLY EFFECTIVE TO STOP MY CAR SAFELY. AS SUCH, I PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL 3-4 TIMES AND THAT CAUSED THE PEDAL TO BECOME VERY HARD AND MADE MATTERS WORST- TO A POINT WHERE I HAD TO PULL ON THE SHOULDER TO AVOID REAR-ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME.

I WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WHERE I NEEDED TO STOP WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR, I WENT TO HIT MY BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WAS STUCK IN THE UP POSITION AND I COULDN'T STOP, I HAD TO QUICKLY TURN MY WHEEL TO HIT THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO SLOW DOWN AND TO AVOID BEING HIT IN THE INTERSECTION. THE CAR BRAKE THEN EVENTUALLY RELEASED AFTER HEARING A HISSING NOISE AND IT SLOWLY GOING INTO THE DOWN POSITION. WHEN I HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT, HE EXPLAINED THAT IT CLEARLY IS A FAILURE OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER. WE RESEARCHED IT AND FOUND THAT SIMILAR ISSUES HAPPENED WITH MY MAKE AND MODEL IN THE PAST BUT MAZDA DOES NOT WANT TO HONOR THE DEFECT AS ITS SPECIAL SERVICE CALL ON IT ENDED IN 2015.

UNFORTUNATELY, OWNERS OF THE 2010-2011 CX-9 HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS BRINGING THEIR CAR TO A STOP. VEHICLE THEN DRIVEN FOR 2-3 DAYS OF NORMAL OPERATION. OPERATOR DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND WHEN BRAKING TO A STOP ON APPROACH TO AN INTERSECTION NOTED THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR BEFORE VEHICLE WOULD SLOW. THE PEDAL HAD TO BE PUMPED TO OBTAIN A MEASURE OF BRAKE RESPONSE. THE VEHICLE TOOK LONGER TO SLOW TO A STOP. ALSO NOTED DURING BRAKING WAS A "HISSING" NOISE WHEN DEPRESSING THE PEDAL. PEDAL WAS THEN PUMPED UP ON APPROACH TO ANY ANTICIPATED STOPPING POINT. VEHICLE TAKEN TO BE CHECKED FOR POSSIBLE AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES. BRAKE SYSTEM CHECKED FOR AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES AND NONE FOUND. TAKEN TO A THIRD-PARTY SHOP FOR ANALYSIS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE MAZDA OEM POWER BRAKE BOOSTER HAD FAILED AND PER THE MECHANIC (NOTE ATTACHED PDF) THE DIAPHRAGM HAD BECOME "BRITTLE" AND THE BRAKE POWER BOOSTER FAILURE CAUSED THE "HISSING" NOISES AND THE BRAKES TO BE CAUSING THE BRAKES TO BECOME UNRESPONSIVE. THE OEM BRAKE BOOSTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. DURING A REVIEW OF ONLINE INFORMATION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE NHTSA HAD CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ISSUE OF MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER LEAKAGE REGARDING THIS GENERATION OF MAZDA BRAKE BOOSTERS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP FOR PRIOR RECALL REPLACEMENT OF OTHER DEFECTS, HOWEVER THIS POTENTIAL DEFECT WAS NOT ADDRESSED.

BY SATURDAY MORNING IT WAS WORSENING BOTH IN FREQUENCY (OCCURRING WITH EVERY APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE) AND SEVERITY (FELT AS THOUGH NO MATTER HOW LONG AND HARD I APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IT WOULD NOT PERFORM IN A MANNER THAT WOULD BE EFFECTIVE IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN VERY SLOW SPEEDS WITH EXCESSIVE SPACE BETWEEN ALL VEHICLES). ON SATURDAY IT ALSO BEGAN MAKING A HISSING NOISE WHICH OCCURRED AS I WAS DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THEN STOPPED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS FINALLY FULLY DEPRESSED (WHICH TOOK AN EXTRAORDINARILY LONG TIME). I FELT IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE OTHER THAN TO GET IT TO OUR MECHANIC WHICH I DID ON MONDAY MORNING. OUR MECHANIC TESTED IT AND DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER HAD FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED.

THE DEALER NEVER CONFIRMED ONE OR THE OTHER. SECOND ISSUE IS RELATED TO A HISSING NOISE COMING FROM THE BREAK PEDDLE. RESEARCH SUGGESTED MAZDA WAS INVESTIGATED BY NHTSA BACK IN 2014 AND INSTEAD OF A RECALL, MAZDA ISSUED AND EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR 7 YEARS OR 90K MILES. UNFORTUNATELY MY VEHICLE IS WITHIN THE 7 YEARS BUT NOT THE 90K. I AM CURRENTLY AT 97K MILES. STILL WAITING TO SEE IF MAZDA WILL COVER THE REPAIR OR AT LEAST DISCOUNT IT.

AFTER REVVING (AND RELEASING) TO 2000 RPM'S AND APPLYING (HOLDING) BRAKE PRESSURE SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE BUILD UP VACUUM PRESSURE DOES NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RETURN TO IDLE RPM. RPM HANGS AT 1500 RPM'S. IF VEHICLE IS IN DRIVE WHILE ACCOMPLISHING THIS THEN THE BRAKE PRESSURE APPLIED IS NOT ENOUGH TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. AFTER FIND THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND PREVIOUS MESSAGE BOARDS ABOUT THIS ISSUED WERE POSTED IN EARLY 2014 BUT A RECALL WAS NEVER ISSUED. ADDITIONALLY, DURING ONE OF THESE INCIDENTS, WHICH HAPPENED TODAY, THE BRAKES REMAINED ENGAGED, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE, EVEN AFTER SHIFTING TO PARK, AND TURNING OFF THE ENGINE. EVENTUALLY, AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE A SECOND TIME AND WAITING AWHILE, THE BRAKES RELEASED. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS, AND TRYING TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT. MOST OF THE OTHER INCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED DURING CITY DRIVING, BUT THEY HAVE ALSO OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AS WELL.

ON 24 JULY 2015, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME EXECUTED AN EMERGENCY BRAKING TO AVOID A COLLISION WHICH CAUSED ME TO DO THE SAME. FROM THE MOMENT I TRIED TO ACTUATE THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT FELT AS IF THE PEDAL WAS IN THE FLOOR AND IMMOVABLE. LITTLE, IF ANY, BRAKE FORCE WAS APPLIED AND REQUIRED BOTH FEET WITH ALL THE POWER OF MY LEGS TO GET EVEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKING. I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY DIVE INTO THE MEDIAN AT SPEEDS OF 60-65 MPH TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THIS CAUSED TWO TIRES TO HAVE TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I LEFT MY PARKING GARAGE AND ALL THE WAY TO THE FREEWAY, BRAKING WAS NORMAL. NO DASH LIGHTS WERE ACTIVE NOR ARE THEY NOW. THE ISSUE PERSISTS NOW AND DRIVING THE VEHICLE IS NOT AN OPTION.

I TOOK EVASIVE ACTION AND JUMPED THE CURB AND DIRECTED THE VEHICLE AT BANK OF NEWSPAPER STANDS IN ORDER TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP.

I REMOVED MYSELF FROM THE INTERSECTION AND AT 5 MILES PER HOUR WENT TO THE NEAREST MECHANIC. I WAS TOLD TO CALL MAZDA BECAUSE THE POWER ASSIST BRAKING SYSTEM HAD FAILED. I CALLED MAZDA AND THEY TOLD ME NOT DRIVE IT AS IT WAS UNSAFE. THEY WOULD HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP IS DOLAN MAZDA KIA IN RENO NEVADA. I WAS INFORMED BY STEVE TO LOOK AT IT IN THE SHOP I WAS LOOKING AT $125. AND THAT IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE MY CX9 HAS OVER A 100K MLS. AND THE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 90K. THE BRAKES FAILED UNEXPECTEDLY WITH NO WARNING. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE FROM MAZDA NOR THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM. THE FIRST TIME IS IN YEAR 2012. I WORKED WITH MAZDA TO HAVE BRAKE BOOSTER REPLACED. HOWEVER, DEALER SEEMED NOT REALIZED THERE IS A WARRANTY EXTENDED PROGRAM FROM MAZDA --- MAZDA SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM -93 (SSP93). THIS IS OFFICIAL RECORDED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE14005. DEALER TRIED CONTACTING MAZDA FOR THIS PROGRAM. BUT MAZDA KEPT NOT RESPONDING, IT HAS BEEN TWO WEEKS BUT STILL NOT MESSAGE BACK FROM THEM. I PAID THE REPAIRMEN OF THE DEFECTIVE BRAKE BOOSTER (PARTS & LABOR) FROM MY OWN PACKET AT THIS POINT. I WAS DRIVING MY SON TO THE DOCTORS OFFICE WHEN I REALIZED THE BRAKES DID NOT FEEL RIGHT. I TOLD MY HUSBAND THAT I FELT A LOT OF RESISTANCE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. SO WHEN I GOT HOME I HAD MY HUSBAND DRIVE THE CAR AND HE SAID HE DID NOT FEEL ANYTHING UNTIL LATER THAT NIGHT WHEN HE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE HE FREAKED OUT CAUSE HE SAID HE FELT AS IF THE CAR WASN'T GOING TO STOP AFTER PUSHING ON THE BRAKES. HE HAD TO PULL OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AND TAKE THE BACK ROADS HOME AT A LOW SPEED AND GIVE HIMSELF PLENTY OF DISTANCE FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF HIM IN ORDER TO BRAKE SO HE WOULD NOT SLAM INTO THEIR CAR. ALSO, WHEN APPLYING ALL THE PRESSURE YOU COULD TO THE BRAKES, A LOUD HISSING SOUND COULD BE HEARD AS WELL. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO OUR MAZDA DEALER WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AND AFTER THEY LOOKED AT IT, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BAD BRAKE BOOSTERS AND THAT WE WERE LUCKY WE WEREN'T IN AN ACCIDENT. AFTER HEARING THIS AND RESEARCHING IT, IT REALLY UPSET US THAT MAZDA HAS HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THE SAME MODEL VEHICLE OF OTHER YEARS.... WHY HASN'T A RECALL BEEN DONE? ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO LOSE THEIR LIFE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE?! I THANK GOD WE WERE ABLE TO STOP OUR CAR BUT THERE WAS NO WARNING OR LEAD UP TO THIS INCIDENT. AUGUST 6TH 2013 MY WIFE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BRAKES ON HER 2011 MAZDA CX9 MAKING A HISSING TYPE SOUND AND BRAKES FEELING MUSHY AND NOT RESPONDING AS NORMAL. THE NEXT DAY SHE ADVISED THE BRAKES WERE WORSE SO WE PARKED THE CAR UNTIL THE 9TH. THE CX9 HAS 46000. MILES. THE CAR RECEIVES REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND WAS TAKEN TO TOM BUSH MAZDA (JACKSONVILLE FL.) FOR DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM. WE WERE ADVISED THAT THE ISSUE WAS A VACUUM LEAK FROM THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND IT HAD TO BE REPAIRED AT THE COST OF $695.88. (PART = $130. W/ LABOR $503.) WE LEARNED THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT A RECALL MIGHT HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR CX9S. THERE WAS NO CONSIDERATION ON REPAIR COSTS. OUR ISSUE IS THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER FAILURE SEEMS TO BE AN ABNORMALLY COMMON COMPLAINT ON MAZDA'S CX9 VEHICLES AND THE FACT THAT THIS INVOLVES BRAKE FAILURES, IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT MAY LEAD TO A CATASTROPHIC CRASH AT HIGHER SPEEDS. I BELIEVE OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS NOTED ABOUT MAZDA CX9 BRAKE ISSUES IN THE NHTSA WARRANT A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION AND POSSIBLE RECALL. WE WILL RETAIN THE DEFECTIVE PART. FURTHER NOTE, THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP RELEASED THE VEHICLE TO MY FATHER W/O PROPERLY INSPECTING THEIR WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS RELEASED TO US W/O THE BRAKE LINES BEING BLED PROPERLY WHICH CAUSED THE BRAKES TO FAIL WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP. IT TOOK ANOTHER DAY TO FIX THAT ISSUE. *TR

SIMILAR TO OTHER COMPLAINTS HERE, I RECENTLY STARTED NOTICING HISSING WHEN I PRESSED MY BRAKES....... I NOTICED THAT I WAS HAVING A HARD TIME COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. I TOOK MY CX9 IN TODAY AUGUST 14, 2013 TO GUNTHER MAZDA IN FORT LAUDERDALE. I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE A SIMPLE CHANGE OF BRAKE PADS, LITTLE DID I KNOW I WAS IN FOR $700!!!!!- APPARENTLY THIS IS NOTHING NEW FOR MAZDA, THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION GOING ON BY THE NHTSA FOR THE 2008 CX9 MODEL AND GUESS WHAT? THE 2011 SEEMS TO BE HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE PADS ARE FINE BUT THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BOOSTER NEED TO BE REPLACED. I'M GOING TO CALL MAZDA USA TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO BUT UNLESS EVERYONE STARTS DEMANDING ANSWERS THEY'RE GOING TO BE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. IT'LL TAKE A STRONG EFFORT TO MAKE THEM ISSUE A RECALL. THIS IS MY LAST MAZDA. I JUST STATED NOTICING ISSUES WITH MY BRAKES, I STARTED HEARING A LOW HISSING NOISE AND NOTICED THAT I WAS HAVING A HARD TIME COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. I NEED TO PUMP THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES TO SLOW DOWN AND THEN ONCE STOPPED THE BRAKES GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I TOOK MY CX9 IN TODAY JULY 8, 2013 TO HAVE THE BRAKES CHECKED AND THE OIL CHANGED. I WAS TOLD THE BREAKS AND PADS ARE FINE BUT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. THEY TRIED FLUSHING THE LINES AND THAT DID NOT HELP. THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT LOOK AT THE CAR FURTHER UNTIL WEDNESDAY JULY 10TH. I ASKED IF THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE THEY SAID IT WAS AND TO GO SLOWLY UPON REACHING A LIGHT AND MAKE SURE TO PUMP THE BREAKS SO I CAN STOP IN TIME AND NOT GO THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. THIS IS VERY ALARMING TO ME SINCE AN ACCIDENT CAN OCCUR THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND I NEED TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO WORK. THEY TOLD ME THEY NEEDED TO CALL THE MAZDA HELP LINE TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE BREAKS. AFTER RESEARCHING ON LINE TODAY MAZDA CX9 BRAKE ISSUES AM VERY INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY AND IF IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED SINCE 2008 WITH THIS MODEL. I AM VERY UPSET SINCE I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF MY CAR AND ALWAYS TAKE IT TO THE MAZDA DEALER FOR SERVICE. MY VEHICLE IS AT THE 37,000 MARK WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE POINT WHEN THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR OTHER VEHICLES. UPON LIGHT BRAKING I HEAR A HISSING SOUND. THE BRAKES ARE INEFFECTIVE AT SLOW SPEEDS. IT TAKES A LONGER TIME AND REQUIRES APPLICATION OF GREATER BRAKING FORCE TO GET THE CAR TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR INSPECTION AND AM AWAITING THE RESULTS. APPROACHING A RED LIGHT ON A DRY SUNNY DAY, MY BRAKES FAILED HALFWAY THROUGH COMING TO A STOP. AT FIRST MY VEHICLE (2011 MAZDA CX-9 SPORT WITH 56,000 MILES) WAS SLOWING DOWN NORMALLY AND THEN SUDDENLY THERE WAS GRINDING/CRUNCHING NOISES AND DESPITE PRESSING THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER STOPPING. I SLAMMED THE BRAKES, PUMPED A FEW TIMES, AND THE VEHICLE SIMPLY FAILED TO SLOW DOWN OR STOP CAUSING ME TO SLAM INTO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR INTO A MECHANIC WHO NOTIFIED ME THAT BOTH OF MY "FRONT CALIPERS WERE POSSIBLY DEFECTIVE," AND MY FRONT ROTORS WERE "UNEVEN AND WEARING ON THE OUTSIDE." HOWEVER, MY BRAKE PADS WERE GOOD AND DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. GOOD THING I WAS ALREADY STOPPING FOR THE RED LIGHT; THEREFORE I ESTIMATE GOING ABOUT 10-15 MPH (SPEED LIMIT ON STREET WAS 35 AND I WAS ALREADY MIDWAY THROUGH COMING TO A STOP AT THE LIGHT). IMAGINE IF I NEED TO BRAKE WHILE GOING 60-70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE! OR WORSE, DRIVING IN THE RAIN! *TR
