MAZDA RECALL # 1904D. MAZDA HAS A RECALL FOR UNITS BUILT FROM APRIL 17, 200 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 11, 2002. MY UNIT WAS BUILT IN 2004 BUT HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS AS THE VEHICLES IN THIS RECALL. NO ONE AT MAZDA CAN ( OR WON'T ) TELL ME THE REASON THAT UNITS IN LATER DATES SUCH AS MINE ARE NOT IN THIS RECALL EVEN THO IT DOES WHAT THE RECALL WAS SUPPOSE TO FIX AND WILL NOT FIX MINE WITH-OUT A CHARGE. THE UNIT DIE WHEN COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN OR SLOWING DOWN. THIS HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY TO MY DAUGHTER WHO DRIVES THIS CAR TO THE POINT WHERE SHE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. SHE HAS BEEN ALMOST REAR-ENDED REPEATED TIMES. HERE IS WHAT THE RECALL SAYS. RECALL SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.0L V6 DURATEC ENGINES , DURING DECELERATION, THE ENGINE CAN STALL. HAZARD: SHOULD THE ENGINE STALL, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR. REMEDY: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE POWER CONTROL MODULE (PCM) WITH THE APPROPRIATE CALIBRATION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 3, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500. THE TRANSMISSION LOST 2ND GEAR AND WOULD NOT SHIFT UNTIL THE ENGINE REVS WERE VERY HIGH, > 6000 RPM. MY WIFE HAD TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY SINCE SHE COULD NOT GO AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. DEALER SAID TRANSMISSION WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS ONLY 10,000 MILES OVER THE WARRANTY. THEIR PRICE FOR A REBUILT TRANSMISSION WAS $4,130. I WENT TO AN INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT WAS MORE ECONOMICAL AND HE TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM SINCE THE BELTS AND HARDWARE (RIVETS THAT CONNECT MOUNTING BRACKET) ARE TOO SMALL FOR THE VEHICLE. HE USED THICKER BELTS FOR THE REBUILD BUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IF YOU CHECK SITES LIKE EDMUNDS.COM. THIS IS A DEFECT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY MAZDA. *KB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MAZDA TRIBUTE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED WITH THE VEHICLE EXHIBITING AN ABNORMAL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS. THE VEHICLE BECAME UNRESPONSIVE TO ACCELERATION ATTEMPTS AND WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. APPROXIMATELY TWO YEARS LATER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE OVERDRIVE WARNING LIGHT WAS FLASHING ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SHIFT ERRATICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MAZDA TRIBUTE. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECREASED SPEED AND FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS LOSING POWER. THE SPEED WOULD NOT INCREASE ABOVE 5 MPH AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE PROPERLY. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND IT WOULD TAKE 1-3 MONTHS TO RECEIVE THE PART. AFTER 4 WEEKS, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, WHEN THE SHIFTING GEARS FROM PARK, REVERSE, AND DRIVE SHE HEARD A GRINDING NOISE. THERE WAS ALSO LITTLE OR NO RESISTANCE IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE MAKING RIGHT AND LEFT TURNS. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07E023000 IS RELATED TO THE SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V583000 IS RELATED TO THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES. THE CONTACT IS AWARE OF THE SAFETY RISK IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 53,000.

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT THE COST OF $3,000. COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON MY 2004 MAZDA TRIBUTE WITH UNDER 52,000 MILES. *JB

AT 39720 MILES I BROUGHT MY 2004 MAZDA TRIBUTE IN FOR A PROBLEM THAT TURNED OUT TO BE LEAKS IN THE TRANSFER CASE AND TIMING CHAIN COVER WHICH WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. AT THAT TIME, THE MAZDA SERVICE CENTER (#1) TOLD ME THAT THE FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS HAD WORN BELOW MINIMUMS, COULD NOT BE RESURFACED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THE PADS WERE AT THEIR MINIMUM THICKNESS AND SHOULD ALSO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS AFTER HAVING TAKEN THE SAME CAR TO A DIFFERENT MAZDA DEALER'S SERVICE CENTER (#2) ONE WEEK EARLIER AND BEING TOLD THAT THE FRONT BRAKES WERE OK (5/32 ON PADS; 2/32 BEING THE LEGAL LIMIT) AND COULD PROBABLY GO FOR ANOTHER YEAR BEFORE NEEDING TO BE CHANGED. THAT TECHNICIAN (#2 DEALER) DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ROTORS. I WAS TOLD BY THE #1 DEALER THAT THE ROTORS WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THE MAZDA WARRANTY - THIS WAS CONSIDERED A NORMAL WEAR ITEM. HOWEVER, MAZDA'S OWN NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE AGREED WITH ME THAT ROTORS ARE TECHNICALLY NOT A "WEAR" ITEM. THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN 30 YEARS OF DRIVING CARS WITH DISC BRAKES THAT I HAVE EVER HAD TO REPLACE A ROTOR; THE LAST TIME THE CAR HAD 90,000 MILES ON IT. ROTORS GENERALLY DON'T WEAR AT ANYWHERE NEAR THE SAME RATE AS PADS. ALSO, THERE WAS NO WARNING TO ME WHILE DRIVING THAT I WAS GETTING TO A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. THE BRAKES APPEARED TO WORK FINE, DID NOT PULL TO ONE SIDE OR MAKE ANY KIND OF SQUEALING OR METAL-ON-METAL SOUNDS. THIS IS A SERIOUS CONDITION WORTHY OF A RECALL! IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE A WHILE AGO AS I HAVE HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM FOR MORE THAN A YEAR NOW! THE FACT THAT TWO MAZDA TRAINED TECHNICIANS CAME UP WITH TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ASSESSMENTS OF MY BRAKES IS ALSO CAUSE FOR CONCERN. *NM

2004 MAZDA TRIBUTE SUV COMPLETELY STALLED DRIVING 35 MPH, THIS IS THE FOURTH SUCH INCIDENT IN 2 YEARS OF ENGINE STALL, DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE ISSUE "UNABLE TO DUPLICATE". THIS INCIDENT RESULTED IN NEAR REAR END COLLISION BY AN 18 WHEEL TRUCK. DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL BEARING ALSO FAILED AT 50,000 MILES. *JB

I OWN A MAZDA TRIBUTE 2004, IT WAS TAKEN TO THE MAZDA SERVICING SHOP FOR VARIOUS REPAIRS RANGING FROM A LEAK OF WATER OF RAIN THROUGH THE FRONT WINDSHIELD, THE TRANSMISSION OF THE SUB WOULD NOT ENGAGE IN REVERSE, THE CONDENSATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONING LEAKS ON TOP OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHICH IS RUSTED, ALONG WITH VARIOUS OTHER COMPLAINTS. THE SUV CURRENTLY HAS A MILEAGE OF 8695 MILES AND IS EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, IT DOES NOT SHIFT INTO THE 40-55 MPH SHIFT AND EXCEEDS THE #3 RPM'S. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN ONCE AGAIN TO THE MAZDA DEALER AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE SUV IS NO LONGER UNDER GUARANTEE BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS OVER 4 YEARS OLD AND THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A SUV WITH ONLY 8695 MILES WHICH IS DRIVEN ONLY LOCALLY CAN BE EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. AND KNOW IT IS SO CONVENIENT FOR THE DEALER AND THE CENTRAL OFFICE IN PUERTO RICO TO STATE THAT MY WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND THAT THIS IS NOT A CASE OF MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT OR RECALL. *JB
