CRUISE, BLAKE PEDAL HARD TO PRESS WHEN CRUISE IS ON. AIR BAG LITE ON 99 PERCENT OF THE TIME

VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING ON A FOUR-LANE HIGHWAY WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO ACCELERATE UNCONTROLLABLY; TRIED APPLYING THE BRAKE, TURNING OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL, PRESSING THE DECELERATE BUTTON, NOTHING WORKED. I HAD TO APPLY A GREAT DEAL OF FORCE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO SLOW THE VEHICLE ENOUGH TO GET IT OFF THE ROAD. I SHIFTED THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV UNCONTROLLABLY. I TURNED THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF AND OPENED THE HOOD TO INVESTIGATE. THE THROTTLE CABLE ON THE CRUISE CONTROL SERVO HAD ROTATED UP TO ABOUT A 30-DEGREE ANGLE AND HAD THE THROTTLE HELD OPEN. I ROTATED THE CABLE BACK DOWN TO ITS NORMAL POSITION AND THE THROTTLE SNAPPED FREE. I WILL NOT USE THE CRUISE CONTROL AGAIN UNTIL THE ISSUE IS RESOLVED. I WAS TRAVELING AT 65 MPH WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO OVER 80 MPH WHILE I WAS TRYING TO GET IT UNDER CONTROL. *TR

THE 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE INITIALLY STARTED TO BE SPORADICALLY SLUGGISH/HESITATION WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS. IT SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS A DELAY FROM WHEN I PRESSED ON THE GAS PEDAL TO WHEN THE VEHICLE ACTUALLY ACCELERATED. ON 6/4/15, A COUPLE DAYS AFTER FIRST EXPERIENCING THE SLUGGISHNESS/HESITANT ACCELERATION, THE VEHICLE STALLED/LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING 55 MILES PER HOUR ON A BUSY ROAD. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WITHIN A FEW MINUTES I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND CONTINUE ON MY WAY. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO BE SLUGGISH AT ACCELERATION AND WOULD RANDOMLY STALL WHILE DRIVING AND/OR IDLING. AT THIS POINT WITH THE VEHICLE'S MECHANICAL ISSUES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOT ON- EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS SOMETHING MAJOR WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. OVER THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS I HAD THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP THREE TIMES. THE FIRST TIME IN THE SHOP (6/6/15) THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL NOT ON- -SO THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THEY SHOP SUGGESTED REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER AND DO A FUEL SYSTEM CLEAN-- WHICH I DID. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO BE SLUGGISH/HESITANT WHEN ACCELERATING & RANDOMLY STALLED WHILE DRIVING AND/OR IDLING. ABOUT A WEEK LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FINALLY CAME ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOP & THEY INDICATED THE CODE WAS TELLING THEM THAT CYLINDER 2 WAS MISFIRING. NO OTHER CODES WERE READ. ALL THE SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED, COILS WERE CHECKED (IN GOOD CONDITION). THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT COME BACK ON; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO RUN SLUGGISH AND STALL WHILE DRIVING (MULTIPLE TIMES WHEN I WAS GOING 55-65 MPH). ON 6/24/15 THE CAR STALLED AGAIN BUT THIS TIME IT WOULD NOT RESTART. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE SHOP & THEY INDICATED THE COMPUTER WAS DEAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I CONTACTED MAZDA AND THEY DENIED THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THE MAZDA TRIBUTE COMPUTERS AND SAID IT WAS JUST MY VEHICLE.

WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW AND ABOUT 5 TIMES OVER THE HISTORY OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE, THE GAS PEDDLE STUCK AND ON THE LAST MOST RECENT EVENT THE CAR GOT STUCK AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED ON THE FREEWAY AND IT COULD NOT BE SLOWED BY PULLING THE PEDAL UP WITH FOOT. THANK GOD THERE WERE NO VEHICLES AROUND OR SLOWING TRAFFIC AHEAD. MAZDA ISSUED A RECALL #94751 - VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: CABLES BUT WHEN WE TOOK THE CAR INTO THE NEAREST MAZDA DEALERSHIP WE WERE TOLD THAT OUR VEHICLE'S VIN IS NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL AS IT SUPPOSEDLY DOES NOT HAVE THE "DEFECTIVE PART(S) INSTALLED." YET THE SUMMARY OF THE RECALL DESCRIPTION NOTES THAT IT IS A DESIGN/INSTALLATION FLAW WITH THE VEHICLE I.E. "INADEQUATE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE ENGINE COVER AND SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONNECTOR" RESULTING IN A STUCK THROTTLE. MAZDA WON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLE NOW AND WANT US TO PAY TO HAVE IT SERVICED/DIAGNOSED/FIXED?! ALSO I HAD PREVIOUSLY TAKEN THIS CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE IN THE PAST WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. MAZDA NEEDS TO DO A MORE IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION OF THIS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND DESIGN/PARTS FLAW AND ISSUE A MORE EXTENSIVE RECALL ON THEIR 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTES. I WAS INJURED WHEN MY ARMS BENT THE STEERING WHEEL FORWARD, THE SEAT BELT BRUISED ME AND MY RIGHT FOOT (TALUS BONE) WAS BROKEN BY THE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I REQUIRED SURGERY. I WAS OUT OF WORK FOR 3 WEEKS AND WORE A CAST FOR 7 WEEKS. THE POLICEMAN WHO REPORTED TO THE ACCIDENT SITE DISCOVERED THE GAS PEDAL WAS HALF WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND STUCK. THE OTHER DRIVER AND A WITNESS SAID THEY HEARD THE VEHICLE REVVING AFTER IT STOPPED AFTER IMPACT. THE VEHICLE CUT OFF AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS ON ITS OWN AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE FIRST TIME I HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE GAS PEDAL, I WAS BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY AND THE PEDAL GOT STUCK ALL THE WAY DOWN. MY CAR WOULDN'T MOVE. SINCE THEN, I'VE HAD 5 INSTANCES WHERE I'M DRIVING MY CAR AND LET UP ON THE GAS PEDAL AND IT GETS STUCK. I HAVE TO STOMP ON THE PEDAL MULTIPLE TIMES FOR IT TO START WORKING AGAIN. I'M ALWAYS IN TRAFFIC AND HAVE TO TURN ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND PULL OFF TO THE SIDE IF THERE IS A SHOULDER AVAILABLE. THE GAS PEDAL WILL GET STUCK IN THE UP POSITION PERIODICALLY. IT HAPPENS MORE OFTEN DURING THE COLD SEASONS. I HAVE HAD MANY CLOSE CALLS GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN AND ON COMING TRAFFIC IS APPROACHING DURING THE TIME I AM TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO GET ON TO THE LANE AND MY ACCELERATOR GETS STUCK AND THE CAR IS STILL SLOWLY MOVING. I WILL LITERALLY HAVE TO CONTINUOUSLY STOMP ON THE PEDAL TO GET IT TO GO DOWN AND ONCE IT DOES IT ACCELERATES QUICKLY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO FORWARD. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN THE DEALER TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS DUE TO THE CARBON BUILD UP ON THE BUTTERFLY CAUSING IT TO GET STUCK BUT EVEN AFTER GETTING THE FLUSH OUT IT CONTINUED TO GET STUCK WHILE I AM DRIVING. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS IN THE PAST WHERE MY GAS PEDAL GETS STUCK. IT'S ALMOST AS IF THERE IS SOMETHING LODGED BENEATH THE PEDAL, BUT THE FLOOR AREA IS CLEAR AND FREE FROM ANY CLUTTER. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT THIS PROBLEM OCCURS ONCE THE WEATHER CHANGES; AS SOON AS WINTER SEASON STARTS IS WHEN I HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I HAD IT TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A CARBON BUILD-UP THAT NEEDED TO BE CLEANED OUT. THE MECHANIC STATED THE CARBON BUILD-UP WAS NOT ALLOWING THE THROTTLE PLATE/FLAP TO OPEN AND CLOSE LIKE IT SHOULD WHICH WAS CAUSING THE GAS PEDAL TO STICK. THIS CAN LEAD TO A VERY DANGEROUS OR LIFE-THREATENING CAR ACCIDENT. THIS HAS HAPPENED FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS AND IS NOW STARTING UP AGAIN. THE PEDAL STAYS IN THE UP POSITION AND WILL NOT DO ANYTHING- THE CAR CANNOT GO LEAVING ME STRANDED UNTIL IT UNLOCKS. TWO TIMES NOW IT HAS LOCKED UP FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME (MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES) WHILE I WAS OUT ON THE ROAD. LUCKILY EACH TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS ABLE TO GET OVER, AND IT WAS NOT AT A BUSY TIME OF THE DAY. NOTHING WILL UNLOCK THE PEDAL WHEN IT JAMS- PRESSING ON IT AS HARD AS I CAN, TRYING GENTLY, OR TURNING THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON. I HAVE JUST HAD TO WAIT FOR IT TO RELEASE. I HAVE FOUND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND CANNOT BELIEVE NO ONE HAS BEEN KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS- IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN IN TRAFFIC, AN INTERSECTION, OR ON THE HIGHWAY- THE CAR WILL NOT MOVE, AND THE DRIVER IS POWERLESS TO DO ANYTHING! I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT NEEDS A TOTAL THROTTLE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT- BUT BASED ON OTHER PEOPLE TESTIMONIALS THIS WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM- MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE SAID THEY HAVE HAD THIS REPLACEMENT AND IT STILL LOCKS IN PLACE, SO I AM WARY TO SPEND $400 FOR SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT WORK. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN OUT ON THE ROAD IT COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING CONSEQUENCES- BEING UNABLE TO MOVE YOUR VEHICLE BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL IS JAMMED IS A VERY UNNERVING EXPERIENCE. *TR

I HAVE A 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE THAT THE GAS PEDAL STICKS ON. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FIXED TWICE AND IT IS RECURRING. IT IS A BIG SAFETY RISK BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO STICK. IT TYPICALLY STARTS OUT ONLY HAPPENING IN THE MORNING BUT IT PROGRESSES TO ANY TIME THROUGHOUT THE DAY. YOU MAY BE DRIVING AND STOP OR DECELERATE AND THEN WHEN YOU START TO GO YOU CANT BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL IS STUCK. AND IT WILL TAKE MULTIPLE TRIES OF PRESSING IT BEFORE IT WILL GO. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I KNOW I WILL TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY WILL FIX IT AND CHARGE ME AND THEN IN A FEW MONTHS THE PROBLEM WILL REOCCUR. PLEASE ADVISE ME ON WHAT TO DO. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RANDOMLY LOCKS IN PLACE. SHE LITERALLY HAS TO STOMP ON THE PEDAL TO GET IT TO RELEASE. THE FAILURE HAS PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED AND SHE HAS TO MAKE 4 OR 5 ATTEMPTS TO RELEASE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE WEATHER AND DRIVING SPEED WERE NOT FACTORS. THE PEDAL WAS REPAIRED, BUT BEGAN STICKING AGAIN WEEKS LATER. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE INTERMITTENT FAILURE. THE VIN, ENGINE SIZE, AND PURCHASE DATE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100.

I PURCHASED THE 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE IN DEC '04. WITHIN ONE MONTH, THE GAS PEDAL WOULD STICK IN THE UP POSITION AND IT WOULD TAKE SIGNIFICANT EFFORT TO UNLOCK THE PEDAL, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LURCH FORWARD. I TOOK IT IN TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT *STILL UNDER WARRANTY* AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. HOWEVER, IT HAS CONTINUED TO BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM EVER SINCE. I'VE BROUGHT IT BACK SEVERAL TIMES TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP (ROYAL MOORE MAZDA) AND THEY TELL ME EVERY TIME THAT THEY DON'T HAVE ANY RECORD OF REPAIRS (SINCE THEY SAID THEY NEVER FOUND ANYTHING TO BEGIN WITH) AND THAT THEY STILL CAN'T FIND A PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IS GETTING WORSE. I'VE BEEN DOING RESEARCH AND FIND HUNDREDS OF OTHER MAZDA TRIBUTE OWNERS HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. AT WHAT POINT DOES THIS BECOME A RECALL ISSUE? I'VE NARROWLY MISSED BEING REAR ENDED MANY TIMES DUE TO THE GAS PEDAL BEING STUCK IN PLACE. AND THE ONLY WAY TO UNLOCK IT IS TO "STOMP" ON IT. GAS PEDAL STICKING AND DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS. PEDAL/THROTTLE BODY, "STICKS" SO THAT YOU MUST APPLY MORE AND MORE PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL UNTIL IT "BREAKS FREE" AND STARTS TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP JUST STATED IT NEEDED A 150.00 THROTTLE HOUSING LUBRICATION. DID NOT HAVE IT DONE DUE TO IT WAS NOT COVERED ON THE WARRANTY. AFTER THIS TIME IT HAPPENED 2 MORE TIME TO ME AND JUST 2 DAYS AGO IT HAPPENED TO MY HUSBAND WITH OUR KIDS IN THE CAR. LUCKILY AGAIN NO ACCIDENT. *NM
ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEGAN STICKING. I COULD NOT RAISE THE PEDAL UP OR PRESS IT DOWN. SUDDENLY, CAR WOULD TAKE OFF. THIS HAPPENS AT ANY TIME DURING DRIVING. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR BACK TO DEALERSHIP TWICE FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, ALL WITHIN 6 MONTHS TIME. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS CARBON BUILD UP ON THE THROTTLE BODY. I FEEL IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE TRIBUTE, OTHER CARS DO NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE. ALL THEY DID WAS CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY BOTH TIMES. THEY ALSO SAID IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY ALTHOUGH THEY DID NOT CHARGE ME FOR THE WORK DONE. I AM LEARY ABOUT DRIVING MY CAR SINCE I NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL START STICKING AGAIN. *JB
2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE [4000 MI] BRAKES FAILED AND THROTTLE STUCK ON DEC 17, 2004. I HAD TO PULL HAND BRAKE TO STOP . CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP IN AMHERST VA. THROTTLE ASSY, IDLE CONTROL VALVE AND A 100MI ROAD TEST WERE DONE. PICKED VEHICLE UP ON JAN 14,2005. ON JAN 15TH, PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN WITH BRAKES NON-RESPONSIVE AND THROTTLE STUCK. SOMEONE ELSE WAS DRIVING AND THEY TURNED ENGINE OFF AND COASTED OFF THE ROAD. VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO DEALERSHIP IN AMHERST AND REMAINS THERE AT PRESENT.
