The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle and arriving to the residence; the contact became aware that after parking the vehicle in the garage, there was an abnormally strong gasoline odor coming from the vehicle. Additionally, the contact saw fuel leaking from the fuel tank. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was part of an Extended Warranty program however, the Extended Warranty Program had expired. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, CODE SCAN REVEALED CODE P0456. INSPECTION REVEALS FUEL LEAKAGE AT BOTH THE LEFT FUEL SENDER AND THE RIGHT FUEL PUMP HOUSINGS. LIQUID FUEL IS EXTERNALLY EVIDENT ALONG WITH THE ASSOCIATED SMELL OF RAW FUEL VAPOR. AT APPROXIMATELY 9:00 PM ON MAY 14TH, 2014 I NOTICED STRONG FUEL ODOR SURROUNDING MY ENTIRE VEHICLE UPON EXITING THE CABIN. I HAD JUST REFUELED AND WAS STOPPING AT A GROCERY STORE ON THE WAY HOME. I DID A QUICK VISUAL AND SNIFF CHECK AROUND THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE SMELL WAS STRONGEST IN THE VICINITY OF THE PASSENGER REAR WHEEL ARCH. ABOUT 20 MINUTES LATER I RETURNED TO MY VEHICLE AND THE ODOR WAS NOTICEABLY STRONGER. IN ADDITION TO THAT, THERE WAS NOW AN APPROXIMATELY 2 FOOT BY 3 FOOT POOL OF GASOLINE ON THE GROUND ON THE PASSENGER REAR SIDE. FURTHERMORE, GASOLINE FUMES COULD NOW BE SMELLED INSIDE THE VEHICLE AS WELL. I HAD MY WIFE MOVE THE CAR OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT AND COULD CLEARLY SEE A TRAIL OF GASOLINE DRIPPING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. I WAS PREVIOUSLY AWARE OF THIS AS A POTENTIAL ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES BUT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED THIS ON MY OWN VEHICLE UNTIL NOW. I KNEW BETTER THAN TO TOP OFF PAST THE AUTOMATIC PUMP SHUTOFF - AND I IN FACT DID NOT TOP OFF - AND THIS IS NOT A CASE OF FUEL SPRAYING OUT OF THE FILLER NECK. THERE IS A REASON THAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH A LARGE AMOUNT OF FUEL TO BE LEAKING FROM THESE VEHICLE'S FUEL SYSTEMS. I'VE HAD COUNTLESS CARS IN MY LIFE AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL WINDOW STICKER FOR MY VEHICLE SHOWING AN ORIGINAL COST OF CLOSE TO $90,000. TO HAVE A CONDITION WHERE FUEL IS LEAKING LIKE THIS IS SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE - NOT TO MENTION POTENTIALLY DEADLY. LIKE MANY BEFORE ME I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING THE SMELL OF FUEL IN THE CABIN OF MY MB. THIS CREATES A BIG PROBLEM IN SO MANY WAYS; FIRST AND FOREMOST THE DANGER OF INHALING GAS FUMES IS BOTH TOXIC AND CAUSES IMMEDIATE DIZZINESS EVEN IN SMALL DOSES (WHEN INHALED) WITH ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN, THE LONG TERM EFFECTS OF INHALATION CAN CAUSE CANCER AND OTHER BODILY HARM. SECOND, THE FACT THAT THERE IS EXPOSED FUEL TO AIR MAKES GAS MORE COMBUSTIBLE AND LETHAL WHEN INTRODUCED TO HEAT, FIRE, FRICTION, AND MAY OTHER FACTORS OF THE FIRE TRIANGLE. THIRD, THESE CARS WITH EXPOSED FUEL ISSUES ARE ALSO HAZARDOUS TO OTHER MOTORISTS, PEDESTRIANS, MOTORCYCLE RIDERS, AND SO ON WHOM MAY COME IN CONTACT WITH THESE VEHICLES. I HAD/HAVE A STRONG FUEL SMELL AFTER FILLING MY TANK. I REPORTED THIS TO THE LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER, MODESTO EUROPEAN, BACK IN EARLY 2012, BUT WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE WAS PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD SO TO INVESTIGE WOULD COST $129/HOUR (I THINK THAT WAS THE NUMBER) AND WOULD T TAKE UP TO 4 HOURS TO DIAGONSE; AND THEN I WOULD STILL BE LIABLE FOR ANY NEEDED REPAIRS. SINCE I DID NOT SEE GAS LEAKING, I PUT OFF THE INSPECTION THINKING I WOULD AS SOME POINT SEE GAS LEAKING IF IT WERE A MAJOR PROBLEM. I STILL GET THE GAS SMELL EVERY TIME I FILL UP, BUT NEVER SAW GAS ON MY GARAGE FLOOR OR ELSEWHERE. UPON FILLING OUR CAR AT THE LOCAL GAS STATION, WE RETURNED HOME AND PARKED THE CAR IN OUR GARAGE. THE NEXT MORNING, I ENTERED THE GARAGE TO FIND AN INCREDIBLY STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE VAPORS. THE SMELL WAS STRONGER THAN ANY GAS STATION OR MECHANIC SHOP I'VE EVER BEEN TO. IT WAS SO INCREDIBLY STRONG, I IMMEDIATELY OPENED THE GARAGE DOOR. I FEARED TO ACTUALLY TURN THE CAR ON GIVEN THE STRONG PRESENCE OF FUEL VAPORS ON A HOT PHOENIX DAY INSIDE MY HOME SO I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PUSHED IT OUT OF THE HOME FOR A WHILE TO AIR THINGS OUT. AFTER SUFFICIENT TIME HAD PASSED, I CAUTIOUSLY TURNED THE CAR ON (OUTSIDE THE HOME) AND TOOK IT TO A WELL RESPECTED MECHANIC SPECIALIZING IN MERCEDES BENZ VEHICLES ONLY. AFTER INSPECTION HE INDICATED THE FUEL TANK HAD A LEAK AND THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED INCLUDING FUEL SENDERS AND THE TANK ITSELF. TO MY SHOCK, I OBSERVED THE LEAK AND THE PUDDLED FUEL DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH MY INFANT'S CAR SEAT! GIVEN THE COST OF THE REPAIR I WAS QUOTED, I CHOSE TO DO SOME INVESTIGATION ON MY OWN AND IT SEEMS THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS AND EVEN THE NHTSA HAS STARTED IT'S OWN INVESTIGATION UNDER ACTION NUMBER PE12001. GIVEN THE CONCENTRATION OF FUEL VAPORS THAT BUILT UP INSIDE MY GARAGE (UNDERNEATH OUR CHILD'S NURSERY), IN THE PRESENCE OF A GAS WATER HEATER, AN ELECTRIC FRIDGE MOTOR, AND OF COURSE THE VEHICLE ITSELF, I'M IMPLORING THE NHTSA TO PLEASE HELP US CONSUMERS. *TR

ON JUNE 9, 2011, THERE WAS A DETECTABLE FUEL SMELL ON THE INTERIOR AND IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. ON JUNE 10, 2011, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MERCEDES-BENZ OF LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA. THE MERCEDES TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS A BAD FUEL SENDER UNIT. MERCEDES FAILED TO MENTION AT THE TIME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WHICH THEY DESCRIBED AS "MECHANICAL STRESS ON THE FUEL FILTER MODULE" (VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN #2008-020001). PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE THE FUEL SENDER UNITS COST $1,620.20. THIS REPAIR SEEMED TO HAVE CORRECTED THE ISSUE TEMPORARILY. ON OCTOBER 17, 2013 I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO MERCEDES-BENZ OF FOOTHILL RANCH, CA FOR ROUTINE SERVICE. THE TECHNICIAN AGAIN IDENTIFIED THE SMELL OF GAS IN THE VEHICLE AND DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A CRACK IN THE FUEL SENDER UNIT. THE MERCEDES SERVICE ASSOCIATED QUOTED APPROXIMATELY $1,600 TO AGAIN REPAIR THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE IS CLEARLY A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE DESIGN AND MERCEDES CONTINUES TO CHARGE ITS CUSTOMERS TO REPAIR THIS FLAW. I'M CONCERNED FOR MY HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF MY WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN, AGES 1 AND 4. INHALING GASOLINE, ESPECIALLY THE BENZENE COMPONENT IS KNOWN TO INCREASE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCER IN HUMANS. FILLED MY CAR UP THE NIGHT OF 10/1/13. PARKED THE CAR INSIDE GARAGE CONNECTED TO MY HOUSE. UPON WAKING UP THE MORNING OF 10/2/2013, I WAS OVERWHELMED WITH VERY STRONG FUEL ODOR. I TRACED THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR TO MY 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55 AMG PARKED IN MY GARAGE. I IMMEDIATELY OPENED THE GARAGE DOOR TO EVACUATE THE FUEL ODOR. I WAS ABLE TO LOCATE THE SOURCE OF THE FUEL SMELL TO THE DRIVERS SIDE BACK SEAT. ARMED WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, I STARTED THE CAR AND BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND NOTICE A FLUID PUDDLE AND LIQUID LINE FORMED. I GOT OUT TO FIND GAS POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE REAR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I CONTINUED TO BACKED THE CAR AWAY FROM THE HOUSE INCASE OF FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THERE, THE DEALER PULLED THE REAR SEAT AND THE FUEL PUMP INSPECTION COVER TO CONFIRM THE SOURCE OF THE FUEL SMELL. WHAT WE FOUND WAS RAW FUEL SITTING ON THE TOP OF THE FUEL TAKE THAT HAD APPARENTLY LEAKED FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE FUEL PUMP. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM ON OTHER E55'S AND THAT AS OF NOW, THERE WAS NO RECALL ISSUED SO I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THIS REPAIR HAS COST ME IN EXCESS OF $1000.00. THERE APPEARS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN OF THIS VEHICLE. ALLOWING RAW FUEL TO ESCAPE FROM THE FUEL TAKE AND "PUDDLE" BOTH ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AND UNDER THE VEHICLE CREATES AN IMMEDIATE FIRE HAZARD. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION FOR THE FUEL PUMPS IMMEDIATELY NEXT TO THE RAW FUEL PUDDLE. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE AN IGNITION SOURCE IN MY GARAGE. I SHUDDER TO THINK OF THE RESULTS HAD ANYTHING IGNITED THE ENCLOSED FUEL VAPORS (INSIDE MY GARAGE WHILE MY FAMILY SLEPT ABOVE). STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE CAR WHILE IDLING. MY WIFE AND I PICKED UP OUR CHILDREN FROM THE BABY SITTER'S RESIDENCE. I LEFT THE CAR IDLING IN THE DRIVEWAY OF HER RESIDENCE. UPON RETURNING TO THE VEHICLE, WE NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE OF THE CABIN OF THE CAR, ESPECIALLY IN THE BACK SEAT. AFTER REMOVING THE BACK SEAT, I REMOVED THE COVERS FOR THE FUEL SENDING UNITS AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A POOL OF GASOLINE COVERING THE OUTSIDE OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE TOPIC, I CAME ACROSS AT LEAST 80 DOCUMENTED CASES OF THE SAME OR SIMILAR ISSUES FILED UNDER EA13003. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD MY VEHICLE TO THIS COMPLAINT IN HOPES OF GARNERING ACTION ON THE PART OF MBUSA TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. INITIALLY, AFTER TOPPING OFF THE FUEL TANK AND PARKING THE CAR IN MY GARAGE, I NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR. A CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE BAY, GAS CAP, AND UNDER THE CAR DID NOT REVEAL ANY NOTICEABLE LEAKS SO I SUSPECTED THAT SOME GASOLINE MUST HAVE DRIPPED DOWN THE OVERFLOW TUBE WHEN FILLING. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A DAY THE ODOR BEGAN TO DISSIPATE. THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURRED AFTER FILLING THE TANK AGAIN WHERE I WAS CAREFUL TO ENSURE THAT NO FUEL LEAKED OUTSIDE OF THE FILLER TUBE. OCCASIONALLY, I NOW RECEIVE AN INTERMITTENT EMISSIONS LIGHT ON MY DASH. THE WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT STAY ON LONG ENOUGH TO RECORD A CODE WHEN CHECKED AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE ODOR APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. COMPLAINT # PE12001 I NOTICED OCCASIONAL FUEL SMELL ORIGINALLY 2-3 MONTHS AGO. INITIALLY SMELLS WERE MILD, NOW SMELLS ARE NOXIOUS AND GETTING WORSE. THERE WASN'T ACTUALLY A PARTICULAR INCIDENT, PER SE. MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE FUEL TANK IN MY CAR LEAKING. THIS COMPLAINT IS IN REFERENCE TO NHTSA ACTION #PE12001. DURING 2009, AT APPROXIMATELY 31K MILES ON THE VEHICLE (2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55), A STRONG FUEL SMELL/ODOR WAS EVIDENT IN THE PASSENGER CABIN. THE SMELL WAS STRONGEST AT THE REAR SEAT DRIVER'S SIDE. THIS ISSUE WAS BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF A SERVICE ADVISOR AT A MERCEDES BENZ AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER. AN OPEN RECALL WAS INDICATED TO REPLACE THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNITS IN THE FUEL TANK, LOCATED BELOW THE REAR SEAT. THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED AT 31,300 MILES AND WHILE THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT REPLACED, THE PROBLEM DID APPEAR TO BE RESOLVED. DURING 2012, AT APPROXIMATELY 50K MILES, THE SAME STRONG FUEL SMELL/ODOR IN THE PASSENGER CABIN REOCCURRED, SUBSEQUENT TO THE FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRATION DATE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, AFTER REMOVING THE REAR SEAT BOTTOM AND DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE ACCESS PANELS, IT WAS IMMEDIATELY APPARENT FUEL HAD COLLECTED/POOLED IN A CAVITY ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK WHERE THE DRIVER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNIT IS LOCATED--ULTIMATELY CONFIRMING SOME TYPE OF FUEL LEAK. WHEN INSPECTING THE PASSENGER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNIT, THE AREA APPEARED TO BE DRY WITH NO FUEL LEAKING ON THAT SIDE. AFTER THIS INSPECTION WAS COMPLETED, THE POOLED FUEL ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL TANK WAS REMOVED AND THE SURROUNDING AREA WAS CLEANED AND DRIED BEFORE REINSTALLING THE ACCESS PANELS AND REAR SEAT BOTTOM. CURRENTLY AT 54K MILES, THE FUEL LEAK HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT LESSENED/AVOIDED BY ONLY FILLING THE FUEL TANK TO NO MORE THAN 3/4 CAPACITY (OR, ABOUT 15 GALLONS OUT OF 21). THERE REMAINS, HOWEVER, A SLIGHT FUEL SMELL/ODOR REOCCURRING DURING INSTANCES WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS IN THE SUMMER HEAT. ALSO, WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED TO CAPACITY, THE STRONG FUEL SMELL/ODOR IMMEDIATELY RETURNS AND AGAIN REQUIRES THE UNSETTLING TASK OF CLEANING UP THE LEAKED FUEL. *TR

I FILLED UP MY CAR WITH GAS ON FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2012 AND THEN WENT OUT. I PARKED MY CAR ON THE ROAD AND CAME BACK TO IT A COUPLE HOURS LATER. THERE WAS AN OVERPOWERING GASOLINE SMELL IN THE AREA AS I WALKED BY AND THOUGHT IT WAS ANOTHER CAR OR GAS WAS DUMPED ON THE ROAD. A COUPLE HOURS LATER I GOT INTO MY CAR AND DROVE HOME. THE GAS SMELL WAS STILL IN THE AREA WHEN I LEFT. I PARKED MY CAR AT HOME AND CHECKED IT ON SATURDAY MORNING. THE GAS SMELL WAS LESS SO I PARKED THE CAR ON THE ROAD THINKING IT WOULD BE SAFE. IN THE EVENING, I WALKED PAST MY CAR AND THE GAS SMELL WAS STRONG AGAIN. I CALLED MY LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER ON MONDAY MORNING REGARDING THE LEAK AND LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THE GAS SMELL AND THAT THE GAS GAUGE DROPPED A COUPLE OF BARS EVEN THOUGH I HAD ONLY DRIVE 13 MILES. I TOWED THE CAR IN AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR CALLED BACK WITH THE RESULT: THERE WAS A TEAR IN THE SEAL THAT IS A PART OF THE FUEL PUMP/SENDING UNIT. THEY CALLED BACK LATER TO TELL ME "DIAGNOSED THE RIGHT SIDE FUEL PUMP HAS A HOLE BURNT THROUGH HOUSING CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK OUT NEAR CONNECTOR HOUSING". THIS SITUATION IS VERY DISMAYING AND SCARY AS THE CAR HAD THE SAME FUEL PUMPS REPLACED UNDER A RECALL IN 2008. THE WORST THING IS THERE WAS A BURN IN THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING WHICH COULD HAVE ENDED IN A MUCH WORSE SITUATION WITH A FULL FUEL TANK... THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP AND THEY SHOWED ME THE DEFECTIVE LEAKING FUEL PUMP. I PAID OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE IT FIXED THIS 3RD TIME. MY 2005 E55 AMG IS A STATION WAGON, WITH 2 REAR SEAT CHILD SEATS, RIGHT OVER THE LEAKING FUEL PUMP AND LEAKED FUEL. IT IS SCARY TO KNOW THAT IF THE FUEL EVER LEAKED ON THE EXHAUST WHILE I AM DRIVING WITH MY WIFE AND TWIN 6 YEARS SON AND DAUGHTER THAT THERE COULD BE A FIRE...GOD FORBID IF MY WIFE WAS DRIVING MY CAR AND KIDS IF IT EVER HAPPENED. AFTER FILLING UP THE GAS TANK IN MY 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55 UP WITH GASOLINE, THERE ARE OVERWHELMING GASOLINE FUMES THAT ENGULF THE INTERIOR AND IS ALSO PREVALENT FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. WHEN ENTERING MY CLOSED GARAGE AFTER A GAS FILL UP, THE ENTIRE GARAGE IS ENGULFED BY THE VERY STRONG AND DISTINCT ODOR OF GASOLINE. THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT NORMAL AND INDICATES THAT GASOLINE IS LEAKING SOMEWHERE. I FILLED MY CAR UP WITH GAS THIS MORNING, AND WHEN I GOT HOME AND PARKED IN THE GARAGE, THERE WAS AN INCREDIBLY STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CAR. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT IT MAY BE THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WITH THE RECALL FROM 2008. I LIFTED UP THE REAR SEAT AND, SURE ENOUGH, THERE WAS GASOLINE FILLING THE WELL AROUND THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL SENDING UNIT. MY CAR HAD THE RECALL WORK COMPLETED IN 2008, SO I CALLED THE DEALER AND TOLD THEM THAT THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. I ASKED THEM IF THEY WERE GOING TO COVER IT SINCE THE RECALL PROBLEM OBVIOUSLY WASN'T FIXED, AND THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID, "ONCE RECALL WORK IS COMPLETED, THAT'S IT. IT'S CONSIDERED DONE, AND ANY FUTURE REPAIRS ARE THE OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY." THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. FUEL LEAKING INTO THE CABIN AND ALSO DOWN AROUND THE GAS TANK ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD. IS IT GOING TO TAKE AN EXPLOSION AND SOMEBODY GETTING KILLED OR HURT FOR MERCEDES TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?! THIS NEEDS TO BE HANDLED BY MERCEDES IMMEDIATELY. AFTER FILLING UP THE CAR WITH GAS, A TERRIBLE ODOR OF GAS WOULD PERMEATE THE WHOLE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. ONCE THE CAR WAS PARKED AND YOU WALKED AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR YOU COULD SMELL GAS AS IF IT WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE CAR ONTO THE GROUND. I WOULD LOOK UNDER THE CAR AND NOT FIND ANY GAS DRIPPING ON THE GROUND. I ACTUALLY GOT SCARED WITH HOW BAD THE ODOR WAS THAT I TOOK THE CAR INTO MY LOCAL MERCEDES BENZ DEALER. AFTER FILLING UP THE GAS TANK, I NOTICED EXTREMELY STRONG GASOLINE FUMES EMANATING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR. DURING APRIL/MARCH OF 2011, I NOTICED AFTER FILLING UP THE CAR FULLY OF 18 GALLONS AT THE GAS STATION, THE NEXT TWO DAYS THE CAR WOULD SMELL LIKE GAS WHEN PARKED IN MY 2 CAR GARAGE. ONCE I STEPPED INTO THE GARAGE, THERE WAS AN OVERWHELMING SMELL OF GAS. GOOGLED THIS ON THE WEB AND FOUND MBWORLD.ORG WHERE COMMON CASES FOR THE E CLASS MODEL. PULLED THE REAR BACK SEATS AND SAW THAT GAS WAS POOLING AROUND THE RIM OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. SOMEHOW FUEL HAD SEEPED UP PAST THE GASKET/UNIT. HAVING A LESS THAN 2YR OLD SITTING RIGHT ABOVE THE REAR BACK SEAT, I FELT THIS NEEDED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF ASAP. TOOK TO AMERICAN SERVICE CENTER, ARLINGTON, VA MERCEDES DEALER. I FOUND A TSB REGARDING THE FUEL SENDING UNIT THAT WOULD BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. VIN WAS PULLED AND SHOWED THIS ALREADY WAS DONE ON MY VEHICLE. BASICALLY I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET $956 TO GET A NEW FUEL SENDING UNIT PUT IN. SO FAR NO FUEL SMELLS, BUT AM AWARE THAT THIS IS JUST A QUICK FIX. MY 2006 E500 4MATIC THAT I ALSO OWN IS STARTING TO HAVE THIS SMELL NOW WHEN FILLED UP. UPON FILLING THE TANK WITH GASOLINE, HEAVY FUMES CAN BE SMELLED INSIDE THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. AS WELL AS THE OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE IF IT IS PARKED IN CONFINED SPACES I.E. MY GARAGE. I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE APRIL 2011 AND THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN IN MY OWNERSHIP AROUND THE APPROXIMATE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2011. I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN IT TO A SHOP AND HAVE PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE THIS ISSUE ADDRESSED BUT ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC THE FUEL SYSTEM IS FAILING IN MULTIPLE SPOTS. NOW THE VEHICLE SITS. MY W211 BEGAN TO SMELL OF FUEL WHILE PARKED IN MY GARAGE. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, I AWOKE TO A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL IN MY GARAGE. WHEN I MOVED THE CAR OUT, A PUDDLE OF GAS WAS BENEATH MY CAR AND IT LITERALLY POURED FUEL OUT AS I BACKED IT DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR AT THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED TWO SEALS AND DECLARED IT GOOD. THE NEXT DAY, I FILLED THE CAR AGAIN AND IT SMELLED JUST AS BAD AS BEFORE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE SEALS AND THE PUMP MODULES AND IT TOOK OVER A MONTH TO GET THE SMELL OUT OF THE CAR. APPROXIMATELY SIX WEEKS LATER, I'M NOT NOTICING A FAINT SMELL OF GAS YESTERDAY AND A STRONGER SMELL TODAY. I DISCUSSED WITH MERCEDES BENZ USA AND THEY SAID THAT THE CAR WAS REPAIRED UNDER A 'TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN' IN 2008, BUT IT'S BECOMING CLEAR THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT GOING AWAY. THE FUEL PUMP MODULES ARE IN SEALED COMPARTMENTS UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SEAT, WHICH COMMUNICATES WITH THE INTERIOR. ADDITIONALLY, FUEL CAN POOL IN THIS AREA - WITH THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS FOR THE FUEL PUMPS. *TR
