I PURCHASED A 2007 MERCEDES BENZ C230 SPORT FROM A PRIVATE SELLER. I SOON LEARNED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS IN LIMP MODE. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION CONDUCTOR PLATE. AFTER HOURS OF RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED SEVERAL OWNERS OF A MERCEDES WITH THE 772.9 TRANSMISSION HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. I ENDED UP PAYING $2500 FOR A NEW TCU FROM MERCEDES BENZ.

2016 I TOOK MY 2007 MERCEDES BENZ C230, INTO MERCEDES BENZ TO SEE WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. MY CAR WAS PURCHASED WITH 37K MILES ON IT AT THE TIME I PURCHASED IT. HOW COULD SUCH A MAJOR ISSUE, ARISE IN CAR SO EARLY IN IT'S LIFE. MERCEDES STATED, THAT THEY MAKE THE BEST QUALITY OF CARS IN THE WORLD! THEY STAND BY THIS SLOGAN. HOWEVER, WHY WOULD SUCH A MAJOR ISSUE OCCUR IN A CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILES/USAGE? AS I UNDERSTAND IT, MATTERS OF THIS MAGNITUDE IDEALLY DOES NOT OCCUR IN SUCH A QUALITY CAR, LET ALONE IN THE CARS INFANT STAGE OR WOULD LIKELY HAPPEN AT ALL! I WAS TOLD SOMETIME AGO THAT MERCEDES KNEW OF THIS ISSUE. I ALSO SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED SO MANY OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AROUND THE WORLD. THEN EVERYTHING GOES BACK TO NORMAL, UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I READ ON-LINE OF MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE AND THERE IS NO RECALL. IMO THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH LOVED ONES IN THIS CAR. MY DEALERSHIP IS REAPIRING THE TRANSMISSION AS I WRITE FOR $1400+. I THOUGHT MERCEDES MEANT HIGH QUALITY/RELIABILITY. AT LEAST THEY CAN ADMIT THEIR MISTAKE AND FIX IT FOR THE PEOPLE SUFFERING BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS SPECIFIC YEAR MAKE MODEL FOR MERCEDES NOT TO HANDLE.

I WISH I NEVER BOUGHT THIS CAR. SOME PEOPLE PAID 1500 DOLLARS TO FIX IT. I THOUGHT MERCEDES MEANT HIGH QUALITY. TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT, GOES INTO LIMP MODE. TURN THE CAR OFF, WAIT A COUPLE MINUTES, RESTART THE CAR AND IT DRIVES FINE. THIS FIRST HAPPENED MAY 2015 WITH 66,000 MILES. OUR MECHANIC TOLD US THIS IS A VERY COMMON MERCEDES TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WE CHOOSE TO REPLACE THE FLUID, AND IT DID SEEM TO HELP. NOW WE HAVE 79,500 MILES AND IT GOES INTO LIMP MODE ONCE A WEEK. THE FLUID WAS SUPPOSED TO LAST 100,000 MILES. OUR MECHANIC SAID THE FLUID WE CHANGED WAS CLEAN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, A KNOWN MERCEDES DEFECT WITH THE TRANSMISSION ELECTRONICS. THE NEXT STEP IF WE DECIDE TO KEEP THE CAR IS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION CONDUCTOR PLATE. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A MERCEDES. THIS CAR HAS BEEN BABIED BY MY WIFE, AND HAS LESS THAN 100,000 IN 9 YEARS. ANY JAPANESE AUTOMOBILE WOULD HAVE EASILY PROVIDED DOUBLE THE LIFE BEFORE FAILURE. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE TO BE FACING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS TO A CAR WITH ON 79,500 MILES.

IT HAS HAPPENED WHEN PULLING AWAY FROM AN INTERSECTION, TRYING TO OVERTAKE A SLOWER VEHICLE, TRYING TO GET UP TO SPEED ENTERING THE INTERSTATE, BUT NOTHING PARTICULAR SEEMS TO TRIGGER IT. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHIFT TO PARK, AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTART IT, WHICH WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. UNTIL NOW. AFTER THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RESET. IT IS STUCK IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE SECOND GEAR. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT MERCEDES BENZ HAS NOT BEEN FORCED TO RECALL THE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 722.9 TRANSMISSION. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND IT APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WORLD WIDE. IT HAS CAUSED ACCIDENTS RESULTING IN INJURY AND DEATH AND IT IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE. THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WHICH IS LOCATED INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION, ON TOP OF THE VALVE BODY. MERCEDES REFUSES TO SELL THE PART TO ANYONE OTHER THAN MERCEDES REPAIR SHOPS. MY CAR ONLY HAS 85,000 MILES ON IT, I BOUGHT IT USED 6 MONTHS AGO.

I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE FOR A FEW MINUTES. ONLY AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE, THE ACCELERATION IMPROVED. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE THREE TIMES NOW AND AM CONCERNED ABOUT ME AND MY FAMILY'S SAFETY, WHY HAS MERCEDES BENZ NOT INITIATED A RECALL. BEFORE I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE SHOP I HAD EXPERIENCED THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE SEVERAL TIMES, ALL RESULTING IN MY CAR GETTING STUCK IN A GEAR. IF I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED MY CAR, EVERYTHING WOULD WORK FINE. I DID NOT HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ERROR, BUT I RAN THE CODE WITH MY OBDI CHECKER, AND RECEIVED AN ERROR IN REGARDS TO THE SPEED SENSOR. AFTER SOME RESEARCH OF THIS ISSUE, IT APPEARED TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS TYPE A CAR. I TOOK THE CAR INTO A LOCAL TRANSMISSION SHOP AND THE REPAIRS TOTALED $1450. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOCAL SHOP STILL HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP AND GET THE PART PROGRAMMED (TOW TO DEALERSHIP $147 AND PROGRAMMING $211.20). I FEEL THAT THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION AND THE FOLLOWING PARTS HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE AND MERCEDES IS CONTROLLING THE USE OF THESE PARTS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THEY HAVE AN UNSAFE DESIGN AND CAN PROVE TO BE HAZARDOUS TO DRIVERS.. I WENT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT A LOCAL VERY REPUTABLE THIRD PARTY DEALER AND MERCEDES BENZ WOULD NOT SELL THE NECESSARY REPAIR PARTS TO ANY NON MERCEDES DEALER. IT IS MY OPINION BASED ON READING ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE THAT THE TRANSMISSION SPEED SENSORS HAVE A FAULTY DESIGN AS WELL AS THE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY AND THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS FORM TAKEOFF ALLOWING THE ENGINE TO REV WITHOUT ENGAGING. I AM CONCERNED THAT A VEHICLE WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE WOULD EXHIBIT SUCH ISSUES. AFTER READING ABOUT THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND MERCEDES RESPONSE TO CUSTOMERS, ONE WOULD CONCLUDE THAT THIS IS CAUSED BY A FAULTY DESIGN. I HAVE A C230 SPORTS SEDAN WITH 45,000 MILES. THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN STICKING IN GEAR, BUT IF I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND REMOVED THE KEY IT WOULD RESET AND USUALLY BE OK FOR A WHILE. NOW IT IS STUCK IN FIRST GEAR, AND NOTHING I HAVE TRIED HAS DONE ANY GOOD. IT WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR. IT HAS AN AUTOMATIC MANUAL TRANSMISSION BUT THE MANUAL FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK AND EVEN TRYING TO SHIFT MANUALLY DOES NO GOOD. CAR SEEMS TO STAY IN ONE GEAR AND DOES NOT DOWNSHIFT OR UPSHIFT WHEN NEEDED. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO STOP CAR, TURN OFF AND RESTART. IT IS A RISK TO ENTER A MAIN ROAD BECAUSE OF NOT KNOWING WHAT GEAR THE AUTO TRANS IS LOCKED OR IF IT WILL SHIFT TO ANOTHER GEAR TO GET UP TO SPEED. DEALER CHECKED CAR ONCE AND SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG BUT IT SEEMS IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM FOR THESE MODEL YEAR. *TR

VEHICLE SEEMS TO RUN FINE BUT AFTER A COLD MORNING START THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTICS (TOTALING $105.00) IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE CODE RENDERING THE BALANCE SHAFT OR POSSIBLE BAD SENSOR WAS THE REASON FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING. THE ESTIMATE COST FOR THIS REPAIR IS RANGING FROM 5 TO 6 GRAND. THIS IS HIGHLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 45,000 MILES. 2007, MERCEDES BENZ, C230, BLACK ON BLACK, THAT HAS BEEN STORED FOR A MAJORITY OF ITS EXISTENCE BECAUSE I AM DEPLOYED OVERSEAS DOES NOT SEND A GOOD IMPRESSION WHEN THE COMPANY WILL NOT ADMIT THAT THERE IS A DEFINITE PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE TYPE. IN TODAY'S ECONOMY, CONSUMERS SPEND A LITTLE MORE TO REASSURE THIS TYPE OF REPAIR IS AVOIDED BY PURCHASING A MORE RELIABLE SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION. WHEN I TOOK TO THE NEXT DAY TO A MECHANIC AND UPON A THOROUGH DIAGNOSTICS, I WAS TOLD THAT THE BALANCE SHAFT (IN TAKE CAMSHAFT CODE 1208) AND EXHAUST CAMSHAFT, CODE 1200 NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO PREMATURE WEAR AND FAULTY PARTS. *TR

MY 2007 C230 AUTOMATIC SPORT SEDAN THAT I PURCHASED PRE-OWNED AND CERTIFIED FROM AN AUTHORIZED MB DEALER IN 2009 HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS SINCE PURCHASE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED EXTREME LOSS OF ACCELERATION AND RUNNING AT A HIGH RPM. IT FIRST OCCURRED A FEW WEEKS AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I WAS ENTERING A PARKING GARAGE WITH A STEEP HILL AND AS I DROVE UP HILL, THE CAR STRUGGLED TO ACCELERATE WHILE THE RMP RAN HIGH. I FEARED THE VEHICLE WAS ABOUT TO ROLL BACKWARD AND I QUICKLY APPLIED THE BRAKES, PLACED THE CAR IN PARK WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE. I TURNED IT OFF AND RESTARTED AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE INTO THE GARAGE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MB SERVICE AND AFTER THEY TRIED TO SAY IT WAS NOTHING WITHOUT REVIEWING THE VEHICLE, THEY FINALLY AGREED TO DO A DIAGNOSIS. I WAS ADVISED THEY FOUND A FAULTY SENSOR AND IT WAS REPAIRED. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE IN THE PARKING LOT OF MY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AS I ATTEMPTED TO BACK INTO MY PARKING SPACE. THE VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE AND THE RMP RAN HIGH. TURNING IT AND RESTARTING AGAIN REMEDIED THE PROBLEM. THE THIRD AND FORTH TIME IT OCCURRED ON THE HIGH WAY DURING MY NORMAL COMMUTE TO AND FROM WORK. THE ISSUE RE-APPEARED IN BUSY TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND THE RPM RAN HIGH. EACH TIME IT HAS OCCURRED, I HAVE HAD TO PULL OVER, TURN THE CAR OFF, LET IT SIT, THEN WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, IT WAS FINE AND I DROVE OFF WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON LINE AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE 2006 2007 C230'S WITH THE SAME OR SIMILAR PROBLEM DESCRIBED AND IT APPEARS TO BE WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THERE IS CLEARLY A DEFECT GOING ON AND I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST A RECALL INVESTIGATION THROUGH THE NHTSA. UPDATED 11/01/11
