The problem is that the steering wheel locking mechanism has failed. The vehicle could not be started or driven. It required a flatbed tow to an authorized Mercedes repair facility. It was diagnosed as the steering mechanism, requiring replacement. The cost for this repair is $1400.00. I researched this problem on the MB website and it stated that this issue was common. I feel that this is a safety issue and should be repaired free of charge or at a significant discount. The car is currently being repaired, and I can forward any relevant documentation to you once the repair is complete.

I drove my car to get lunch. Came back out to go back to work and the car would not start. Would not even turn over. My Radio did not turn on and I couldn't even roll my windows back up. Luckily they were only cracked open a small amount. My steering wheel cannot be turned, it's locked in it's current position. I am told the ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) and possibly the EIS is the cause of this problem. The display on the dash says "Take your key from ignition" and that is all I get. Had to have my car towed and now I have a dead car with the windows partially open that I cannot close.

The entire rear subframe of any W205 body model including but not limited to the C class from 2009-2014, CL class, SL, class ETC. suffers admittedly from MB USA, premature rust, deterioration etc. there is an active recall for these same models in Canada and all of Europe but not the USA. My garage kept 2009 C300 has suffered extensive rear end damage from a factory defect that Mercedes refuses to recognize in the Continental U.S. but will admit the same issues occurred in the EU and Canada. Keeler Mercedes, USA, of Colonie New York, stated they completed my subframe repair under the MB rear subframe extended warranty. The vehicle was driven home and inspected only to find out Keeler Mercedes of NY did NOT replace this crucial safety component under MB-USA extended warranty issued for this defect. This is pure negligence. When asked why the subframe wasn’t replaced as the work order stated it did, they stated “a mix up in paper work” I believe Mercedes-Benz USA and Keeler Mercedes of New York conspired together to push this massive safety defect aside and lie about completing the work in fear of the payment from warranty not being worth the labor hours required by the technicians. This oversight COULD have been a multi million dollar lawsuit if any injury was sustained after said repairs were done in belief the vehicle was safe to drive. Keeler Mercedes’ has also had this vehicle in their possession from June 14th 2024, to todays date, July 5th 2024 with no word on when repairs to subframe will be completed. Subframe replacement stated on MB website states it is an 8 hour labor job. We’re on day 18 now. MAJOR safety issue and shady dealing by dealership

Suspension Cross-Member - Mercedes-Benz (204-350-01-41) Driving regularly suddenly fill like the rear passenger side tire moved unevenly, then went to the tire shop, and when they take out the tire see how the rear frame was rusted and broken in a straight line exactly in the middle of the tire hole area. Then start to check used cars to donate that part and All of them have the same trouble in that piece, so I decided to review the frame and discover that the rust begins to damage the opposite side too, so I'm pretty sure is a component failure in metal and materials more than simple rust.

2009 C300 at 120k miles car won’t start. Dashboard indicates “remove key from ignition” key was not in ignition, had car towed to the dealership, they said car needs a new steering lock and ignition switch due to malfunction. Total cost $1923. Thankfully car was not in motion when this happened. Please do a recall on steering lock and ignition switch for the safety of everyone!!!!

UPON INSPECTION AND TAKEN TO CERTIFIED, RELIABLE MERCEDES REPAIR SHOPS, LIGHTS ARE FULLY FUNCTIONING, YET ALERTS CONTINUE ON MY DISPLAY/DASH. TURNED IGNITION KEY TO START VEHICLE. NOTHING HAPPENED. NO CRANKING OR CLICKING. COMPLETE SILENCE. STEERING WHEEL AND TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WERE BOTH LOCKED INTO POSITION AND COULD NOT BE MOVED EVEN THOUGH IGNITION WAS IN THE 'ON' POSITION. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH A DEFECT IN THE 'ELECTRICAL IGNITION SYSTEM/ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (EIS/ESL)' AND IS THE SUBJECT OF A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THIS CONDITION OCCURRED ON ONE PREVIOUS OCCASION WITHIN THE LAST 45 DAYS. ON BOTH OCCASIONS VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY HOWEVER IF IT WERE OCCUR WHILE MOVING THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK AND DRIVER WOULD BE UNABLE TO AVOID A COLLISION. SAFETY ISSUE REGARDING FAILURE OF REAR SUBFRAME. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2009 C300 4MATIC SPORT. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT ITS ENTIRE LIFE AND IS NOT IN A HIGH SALT OR SNOW ENVIRONMENT. MY WIFE WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY TO HAVE AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT IN THIS CAR DUE TO THE REAR SUBFRAME RUSTING THROUGH AND SEPARATING. WE BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW AND PAID A PREMIUM FOR MERCEDES QUALITY BECAUSE WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE SAFEST VEHICLE MADE. I AM EXTREMELY DISMAYED TO LEARN THAT WHEN MY WIFE CAME HOME AND SAID THE CAR WAS DRIVING WEIRD, THAT IN FACT SHE WAS DRIVING A CAR THAT WAS FALLING APART WITH MY 7 YR OLD DAUGHTER IN THE BACK AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. PULLED INTO PARKING SPACE AND LOCKED CAR. 'THE CAR WAS IN A STATIONARY POSITION IN A PARKING LOT.' DID SHOPPING 1/2 HOUR. IT TOOK THEM OVER AN HOUR TO LOAD THE CAR ON THEIR TRUCK BECAUSE THE WHEELS WERE LOCKED IN A TURN POSITION. THEY TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE REALIZED THE CAR WAS IN A STEERING LOCK. AS I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK ON AUGUST 25,2017 I STOPPED AT WALGREEN'S TO MAKE A PURCHASE. WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE VEHICLE AND ATTEMPTED TO START THE CAR IT WOULD NOT START. I THEN TRIED JUMPING THE VEHICLE FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH NO LUCK. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO INITIALLY STATED THAT THE CAR WAS NOT RECOGNIZING THE KEY FOB. THEY THEN IN TURN STATED THAT NO THE CAR'S STEERING COLUMN LOCK IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. I THEN RESEARCHED THE WEB AND NOTICED THAT THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE IN WHICH THERE HAS BEEN MANY NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS. MY CAR IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY WILL NOT COVER THIS ITEM AS THEY ARE ONLY COVERING THE POWERTRAIN.

THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK IN MY 2009 MERCEDES BENZ C300 IS NOT UNLOCKING WHEN I PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE CAR WILL NOT START. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS. AFTER THE FIRST TWO INCIDENTS, THE WHEEL DID EVENTUALLY UNLOCK. I TOOK IT TO MY REPAIRMAN WHO ADVISED I GET A NEW KEY FROM MB AS THAT MIGHT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. GOT A NEW KEY LAST WEEK FOR $330. TODAY - 10 DAYS LATER - THE STEERING WHEEL AGAIN WILL NOT UNLOCK. LOOKING ON THE INTERNET, THIS IS A VERY COMMON AND WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH MB VEHICLES OVER MANY YEARS. MB SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS AND FIX THE PROBLEM, AND AT NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER! AT PRESENT, THEY ARE GOUGING CUSTOMERS ANYWHERE FROM $1200-2200 TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT EVERY MECHANIC AND COLLISION PERSON IN MY NEIGHBOTHOOD KNOWS TO EXIST. THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO DON'T SEEM TO KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM ARE THE PEOPLE AT THE MB DEALERSHIPS, WHO OBVIOUSLY WANT THE REPAIR BUSINESS. I MAINTAIN REGULAR SERVICE. STOPPED TO GRAB LUNCH. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT IN MOTION OR IN A DANGEROUS AREA OR IN THE MIDDLE OF NIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. THE CAR WOULD NOT RE-START, YET THE LIGHTS, RADIO, PANEL ALL APPEARED TO BE WORKING, ALTHOUGH "REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION" MESSAGE APPEARED. THOUGHT IT COULD BE A BATTERY OR ALTERNATOR ISSUE. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO 2 DIFFERENT PLACES, THE LAST OF WHICH WAS THE MBENZ DEALERSHIP OVER AN HOUR AWAY. THIS OCCURRED AT 80K MILES ON ODOMETER. A MAJOR SAFETY AND POSSIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I THOUGHT THE MB BRAND WAS ABOUT RELIABILITY, QUALITY, SAFETY. SO DISAPPOINTED. MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTIVE PRODUCT.

AFTER 3 HOURS OF SITTING IN A PARKING LOT IN ATLANTA A TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. THE CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO NEUTRAL SO I HAD TO WAIT ANOTHER 2 HOURS FOR ANOTHER TYPE OF TRUCK. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED IT AS STEERING LOCK ISSUE. I ASKED THAT THE CAR BE TOWED TO A LOCAL MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP AND HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC COMPLETED AGAIN. MERCEDES BENZ OF MARIETTA "CLAIMED" TO HAVE DONE A DIAGNOSTIC BUT FOUND NOTHING. I ASKED FOR A COPY OF THE DIAGNOSTIC MERCEDES BENZ OF MARIETTA HAD RUN AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO ASSIST. SEE ATTACHED EMAIL. TO-DATE, MERCEDES BENZ HAS BEEN NONRESPONSIVE TO THE STEERING LOCK ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR/MODEL CAR; DESPITE KNOWLEDGE THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON REPEATEDLY. MARTY, AT MY LOCAL MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP STATES THEY HAVE TO REPLACE A STEERING LOCK AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH WITH REPAIR COST RANGING FROM $1200-$1700 PER CAR. I PARKED THE CAR, AND TURNED IT OFF COMPLETELY. WHEN I RETURNED TO THE CAR, THEY KEY FOB WOULD ONLY TURN THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ON, BUT THE CAR WILL NOT START. THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED, AND I CANNOT CHANGE THE GEAR FROM "P". A MESSAGE WOULD APPEAR "REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION" WHENEVER THE DOOR IS OPEN. I HAVE SEARCHED AND IT APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THESE MODELS, WHERE THE EIS OR ESL FAILS FOR NO REASON. THE QOUTES FOR THIS REPAIR RANGE FROM $1000 TO $3000. I HAD TO TOW THE CAR TO MY APARTMENT, AND NOW I HAVE TO TOW THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN SOLVE THIS ISSUE AND REPROGRAM IT AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW PARTS.

WHEN I RETURNED TO MY CAR IN THE PARKING LOT AFTER GROCERY SHOPPING IN THE EVENING, THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE RADIO AND LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD WORKED AND THE SEAT MOVED, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START. I HAD THIS CAR CHECKED NOT TOO LONG AGO AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE, BUT THE CAR JUST DECIDED NOT TO WORK SUDDENLY. THIS IS ESPECIALLY SCARY FOR A FEMALE STRANDED IN A PUBLIC PARKING LOT AT NIGHT. I DID NOT GET ANY WARNING MESSAGES BEFORE THE INCIDENT. I HAD TO CALL ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND TRY JUMP STARTING IT FIRST, WHICH WASN'T THE PROBLEM AS THE BATTERY WAS FULLY CHARGED. I ENDED UP HAVING TO TOW THE CAR EARLY NEXT MORNING BECAUSE THE DEALER WAS CLOSED AND HAD TO TAKE A CAB HOME. WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALER AND STATED ALL THE "SYMPTOMS", MB KNEW RIGHT OFF THE BAT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, WHICH TO ME IS ALARMING. THEY TOLD ME THEY ARE 99% SURE IT IS EITHER ELECTRONIC IGNITION SWITCH OR ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK PROBLEM AND IT WOULD COST ME $1200 TO REPAIR IT. IT OBVIOUSLY IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE. THEY ARE VERY WELL AWARE OF IT, YET THEY ARE NOT DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT, AS (THEY SAY) IT IS NOT A SAFETY PROBLEM. HOW IS THIS NOT A SAFETY PROBLEM WHEN THE DRIVER DOESN'T GET A SLIGHTEST WARNING OR EVEN A MESSAGE THAT THE CAR WON'T START AND WILL LEAVE YOU STRANDED WHEREVER YOU ARE? AS A YOUNG FEMALE LIVING IN A CITY WITHOUT FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO HELP OUT, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT IN A PUBLIC SPACE, THIS IS QUITE FRIGHTENING. I ALMOST HAD A PANIC ATTACK, BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AND NEVER HAD TO CALL ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. THE ONLY REASON I HAD GOTTEN A MERCEDES BENZ WAS FOR ITS SAFETY. I EXPERIENCED THE INFAMOUS STEERING LOCK PROBLEM 5 DAYS AGO IN MY (NOW FORMER) 2009 MERCEDES C300. PRIOR TO THIS PROBLEM OCCURRING MY CAR SEEMED TO BE WORKING FINE. I'VE ALWAYS HAD ALL OF THE RECOMMENDED SERVICES PERFORMED ON TIME BY THE DEALER. THEN LAST SATURDAY I WAS RUNNING ERRANDS AND AFTER MY THIRD STOP MY CAR WOULDN'T START. I ASSUMED IT WAS THE BATTERY (EVEN THOUGH IT HAD BEEN REPLACED LESS THAN 2 YEARS AGO) AND I CALLED MERCEDES ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. THE ROADSIDE TECHNICIAN TESTED THE BATTERY AND SAID IT WAS FINE AND HE IMMEDIATELY SUSPECTED IT WAS THE STEERING LOCK PROBLEM. AFTER A BIT MORE TESTING HE CONFIRMED IT WAS AND HE SAID THE CAR WOULD NEED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER ON A FLATBED. IT WAS SATURDAY AND THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS CLOSING BUT I GOT THERE JUST IN TIME TO GET A LOANER CAR. ONCE I GOT HOME I STARTED DOING INTERNET RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM AND I FOUND THIS WEBSITE. I DECIDED TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER ON SUNDAY WHEN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS CLOSED AND ASK IF I COULD TRADE IN THE CAR. I PRINTED OUT ALL OF THE REPORTS ON THIS SITE AND TOOK THEM WITH ME. THE SALESPEOPLE CLAIMED THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT IT. I WAITING UNTIL YESTERDAY WHEN I HAD THE REPAIR QUOTE BEFORE I TRADED IT IN. THE COST WOULD HAVE BEEN $1,800 BUT THEY SAID I COULD USE A 15% OFF SERVICE COUPON. I ALSO TRIED TO SHOW THE REPORTS FROM THIS SITE TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR BUT HE WASN'T INTERESTED IN SEEING THEM EITHER. STATIONARY WHILE AT THE REST AREA DURING A HOT SUMMER DAY ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE STEERING COLUMN OR ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL) FAILED AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THIS PARTICULAR PART IS FAULTY ON MOST 2008-2009 MERCEDES C300. SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSANDS ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH THIS PARTICULAR PART AND AT MOMENTS THEY GET IT WORKING AND AT OTHER TIMES NOT SO MUCH. THIS PART NEEDS TO BE RECALLED SINCE IT IS A DEALER ONLY REPLACEMENT PART AND NO ONE CAN TOUCH IS BESIDES THE DEALER DUE TO THEFT AND SECURITY MEASURES. MERCEDES HAS THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE CORNERED AND IS NOT DOING ANYTHING TO WORK WITH THE CUSTOMER. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THIS CAN LEAVE A PERSON STRANDED IN DANGEROUS PLACES OR IT COULD LEAVE YOU STRANDED IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION.

I HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH MY VEHICLE SO I WAS SURE I WOULD BE OK. ON MONDAY I RECEIVED AND CALL FROM MERCEDES BENZ OF HENDERSON STATING THAT THE IGNITION LOCK MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND IT WOULDN'T BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY I PURCHASED. SINCE I AM NOT A MECHANIC I ASKED WHAT THE IGNITION LOCK MODULE WAS AND FOUND OUT IT WAS THE COMPUTER THAT READS MY KEY AND PREVENTS THEFT. BASICALLY THE COMPUTER FAILED AND THINKS THAT MY CAR IS STOLEN. THE COST TO REPAIR THIS IS OVER $1,000. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNFAIR. MERCEDES CARS ARE NOT CHEAP NOT TO MENTION PAYING MORE A MONTH TO HAVE ADDITIONAL WARRANTY COVERAGE. I AM APPALLED THAT MERCEDES HAS NOT DONE A RECALL ON THEIR VEHICLES FOR THIS ISSUE. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY RISK FOR THOSE WHO ARE TRAVELING ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE LIKE MYSELF A WOMEN TRAVELING ALONE. THE RADIO WORKED AND ALSO THE INTERIOR LIGHTS. I TOOK THE KEY OUT AND WENT TO USE THE SPARE KEY, INSERTED IT AND WHILE THE DOOR WAS OPENED THE DISPLAY TOLD ME TO REMOVE THE KEY. THIS COULD PRESENT A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR A FEMALE WITH CHILDREN IN AN UNFAMILIAR SETTING. AFTER READING UP ABOUT THE PROBLEM I SEE THAT I AM NOT ALONE IN MY TROUBLES. ON 10/3/2015 THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AT A GAS STATION FOR 5 MINUTES. UPON RETURNING TO THE CAR AND ATTEMPED TO SWITCH THE IGNITION ON, THE CAR WONT START. CONTACTED MERCEDES BENZ IN ENGLEWOOD AND THEY OFFERED A ROAD ASSISTANCE ( $80 SERVICE CHARGE ). AFTER WAITING FOR OVER AN HOUR AND HALF THE ROADSIDE TECHNICIAN ARRIVED AND ATTEMPED TO JUMSTART THE VEHICLE WITH NO SUCCESS. HE SAID THAT WITH 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WORKING FOR MERCEDES THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WHERE THE VEHICLE WONT RECOGNIZE THE KEY, LOCKING THE STEERING AND CUTTING OFF THE ENGINE POWER TO START UP. HE CONTACTED MERCEDES FOR A TOWING TRUCK TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC. THIS HAPPENED ON A SATURDAY AND HAVE TO WAIT TIL MONDAY FOR RESULTS. VEHICLE HAS 79,000 MILES ODOMETER READING. THERES MORE THEN 10,000 FEEDBACKS OVER THE INTERNET WITH THE SAME ISSUE. FIX RANGES FROM $500 TO $1500. MERCEDES HAS NOT RECALLED THIS ONGOING COMMON ISSUE.

MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF ITS STARTING AND STEERING LOCK FUNCTIONS. THE UNDERLINE PROBLEM AND AREAS OF CONCERN IS THE FREQUENCY OF THIS FAILURE AND THE DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH HAVING THE VEHICLE IMMOBILIZED WHEN THE ASSOCIATED PARTS FAIL. MERCEDES BENZ HAS NOT TAKEN ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ISSUE YET IT CAN'T BE FIXED WITHOUT DEALERSHIP INTERVENTION. THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE BESIDES HAVING YOUR CAR TOWED IS IN THE EXCESS OF $1,000.00. IN MY CASE I HAVE BEEN QUOTED &1700.00! ALTHOUGH MY PARTICULAR INSTANCE HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED, THERE IS NO EXCEPTION THAT IT CAN OCCUR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOTION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUT OFF AND THE STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK IN ANY POSITION. FOR THE THIRD TIME IN 6 MONTHS MY CAR WOULDN'T START. GOT OF WORK GETTING READY TO GO HOME AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHECKED IT AND COULDN'T FIND A THING. THEY ASKED ME TO BRING THE SPARE KEY AND THE CAR STARTED. FAST FORWARD THREE WEEKS LATER...SAME ISSUE. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 5 DAYS AND COULDN'T FIND NOTING SO THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY IN NOVEMBER. MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED MERCEDES C300 4MATIC SPORT. MY WIFE AND I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO OWN A MERCEDES FOR ITS RELIABILITY, OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AND SERVICE. ONE EVENING MY WIFE AND I WENT GROCERY SHOPPING AND AFTER COMING BACK IN TO THE CAR WE ENDED UP BEING STRANDED FOR SEVERAL HOURS WAITING FOR AN EMERGENCY ROADSIDE SERVICE TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. WE INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WOULD SIMPLY REQUIRE A JUMP START AND NEVER EXPECTED THE CAR TO HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM BECAUSE WE ALWAYS MAINTAIN OUR CARS. WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TOW THE CAR TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP IN HUNTINGTON, NEW YORK. LET ME REMIND YOU THAT THE CAR IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD, AND HAS UNDER 45,000 MILES SO IT?S STILL YOUNG, AND NEVER HAS BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS. THE NEXT DAY A MECHANIC FROM THE DEALERSHIP CALLED ME AND INFORMED ME THAT THE PROBLEM IS THE STEERING LOCK MODULE WHICH NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AND THE TOTAL COST IS $1,200. I WAS ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED BECAUSE I NEVER EXPECTED A CAR THIS PRESTIGIOUS TO HAVE PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. I THINK IS UNFAIR, EXTORTIONATE AND UNETHICAL FOR MERCEDES TO CHARGE THEIR CUSTOMERS FOR A TECHNICAL FAULT THAT CLEARLY REQUIRES A RECALL. AFTER SOME EXTENSIVE RESEARCH I CAME TO FIND THAT THIS IS A COMMON TECHNICAL ERROR THAT TO MY SURPRISE STILL HAS NOT BEEN PUT AS A RECALL. A LOT OF MERCEDES OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WHICH IS SIMPLY UNETHICAL AND UNJUSTIFIED. A PRESTIGIOUS CAR LIKE MERCEDES SHOULDN'T LET A TECHNICAL FAULT LIKE THIS OCCUR BECAUSE OF THE PRECISE DETAILED ATTENTION THEY PUT ON EACH AND EVERY CAR THEY MANUFACTURE. EVEN IF THE PROBLEM DOES EXIST MERCEDES SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THE ISSUE AND NOT LET ITS CUSTOMERS PAY FOR MERCEDES? FAULT. I WAS GETTING MY CAR DETAILED. WHILE WAITING ON ANOTHER CUSTOMER HAD CAR VACUUMED OUT. AFTER ABOUT 30 MINS, TRIED STARTING THE CAR AND THE KEY WOULD TURN WITH OUT STARTING THE CAR. HAD IT TOWED TO MERCEDES SHOP. THERE I WAS TOLD IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING COLUMN. STEERING LOCK HAS ELECTRIC FAULT IS WHAT WAS STATED TO ME FOR A PRICE OF $1700.+ TO BE REPAIRED. THIS IS THE THIRD ELECTRICAL PROBLEM SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR. I'VE HAD THE LEFT AND RIGHT WIRING REPAIRED, THE LEFT ONE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, THE RIGHT ONE WASN'T. THE WIRING WAS ACTUALLY BURNT. BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR A REPAIR OF THE STEERING COLUMN ON 3/9/2013 TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR, WHICH THEY TOOK CARE OF. BUT, THEN ABOUT A MONTH LATER STARTED TO GET WARNINGS FROM THE DASHBOARD TO CHECK MY RIGHT REAR TAILLIGHT AND DIRECTIONAL. THEN IT WAS THE RIGHT REAR SIDE LAMPS, TAILLIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, REVERSE LIGHTS AND DIRECTIONAL, EVERY TIME I START THE CAR AND/ OR WHENEVER ONE OF THOSE LIGHTS IS ENGAGED WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCEPT THE COMPUTER CHIP KEY POD AND THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DISABLED, STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY HAD AN ELECTRICAL FAULT. THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP, UNABLE TO TURN IGNITION ON. NO ADVANCE NOTICE THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO A MERCEDES DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR, ALMOST 50 MILES AT A COST OF $240. THE REPAIR WAS $707.00 AND INVOLVED REPLACEMENT OF STEERING COLUMN LOCK ASSEMBLY. THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BY MERCEDES AND THEY HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED A RECALL EVEN THOUGH THIS PROBLEM SEEMS PREVALENT ON THE INTERNET. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS HAVING A VEHICLE THAT CANNOT BE OPERATED, NOR REPAIRED BY ANYONE OTHER THAN AN AUTHORIZED MERCEDES DEALERSHIP. THIS PROBLEM STRANDS THE DRIVER AT A PLACE WHEREVER THE PROBLEM MAY OCCUR. I HAD THE DEALERSHIP RETURN THE FAULTY PART IF NHTSA WOULD LIKE TO INSPECT IT. THE MERCEDES BENZ STEERING COLUMN LOCK PROBLEM IS NOT FROM WEAR AND TEAR, MORE LIKELY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM BETWEEN THE IGNITION AND THE KEY. I PARKED VEHICLE IN A PUBLIC PARKING LATE AT NIGHT. I WAS WITH MY SON, I TRIED TO TURN ON VEHICLE AND IT DID NOT START. I WAS STRANDED LATE AT NIGHT WITH MY SON WITH NO RIDE. I HAD TWO MECHANICS LOOK AT IT, ONE OF WHICH WAS A MECHANIC FOR THE MERCEDES DEALER. BOTH STATING IT WAS THE STEERING LOCK MODULE, THEY BOTH TOLD ME THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE MERCEDES C300. THIS PROBLEM COSTS $1300 TO FIX WITH THE DEALER, THE PART ALONE IS OVER $550. READING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ONLINE, IT IS VERY COMMON IN THE 2008-2009 MODELS, NORMALLY OCCURRING AROUND 3-4 YEARS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE, AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY.
