Extreme Gas Odor after filling gas tank and during time of driving.
DRIVER IS EXPERIENCING A HEAVY ODOR OF GASOLINE AFTER FILL UP. VEHICLE IS NOT OVERFILLED/TOPPED OFF. VEHICLE WAS SITTING INSIDE GARAGE WHEN OWNER NOTICED A HEAVY FUEL ODOR AND NOTIFIED FIRE DEPARTMENT TO INVESTIGATE. PER RECOMMENDATIONS OF FIRE DEPARTMENT, KEEP VEHICLE OUT OF GARAGE UNTIL ISSUE COULD BE INSPECTED BY A QUALIFIED MECHANIC. MECHANIC INSPECTED FUEL SYSTEM AND FOUND FUEL LEAK UNDER REAR SEATS NEAR FUEL PUMP/SENDING UNIT. MERCEDES BENZ REFUSES REPAIR ISSUE SAYING IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. GASOLINE FUMES/VAPORS ARE ESPECIALLY HEAVY INSIDE A SINGLE CAR GARAGE, AND IF A IGNITION SOURCE IS INTRODUCED IT COULD BECOME FATAL.

THE GENTLEMAN FROM VALVOLINE LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND SAID THERE'S SOME TYPE OF COVER THAT GOES UNDERNEATH THE GAS TANK ITSELF AND PUT HIS FINGER INTO IT AND COULD TOUCH GASOLINE ON HIS HAND... I JUST WENT ONTO THE INTERNET AND READ MANY MANY COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME THING WITH THIS TYPE OF CAR LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED... IN THOSE COMPLAINTS THE PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT THEIR CAR TO DEALERSHIP SAID THAT IT WAS VERY EXPENSIVE TO REMEDY AND THAT THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL... AFTER DRIVING A LITTLE BIT AND REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF GASOLINE IN THE TANK THE SMELL HAS SUBSIDED SOMEWHAT... THOSE COMPLAINTS ALSO MENTION THAT IT CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS WITH THIS TYPE OF LEAK

TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE VALVES AND THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA13003 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE CONTACT PURCHASED A FUEL TANK SEAL AND HAD IT INSTALLED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THERE HAS BEEN A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE AFTER FUELING THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR HAS BECOME STEADILY WORSE AND WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ASSISTANCE. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS CRACKED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I INQUIRED HOW THIS COULD HAVE OCCURRED, I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE DUE TO IMPACT OR TRAUMA (WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE AS THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY INCIDENT). WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD COST $2,300.00 TO REPAIR VEHICLE. CALLED MB-USA AND ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE. WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL ON THE FUEL TANK AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE COST. AS THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE, I HAD THE WORK PERFORMED AND RECEIVED A 10% "GOODWILL" DISCOUNT. PICKED UP VEHICLE AND DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND CONTINUED TO SMELL FUEL. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND THEY CAME TO PICK-UP. ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THEY DID NOT TIGHTEN A CLAMP OR SOMETHING. WE PICKED IT UP AGAIN AND THE ODOR WAS PERSISTENT. IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP BACK AND WE SUBSEQUENTLY TRADED THE VEHICLE IN. BOTTOM LINE.... I DO NOT THINK THAT A FUEL TANK SHOULD FAIL ON A VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 80,000 MILES. I HAVE THE OLD TANK AND BELIEVE THAT MB SHOULD REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE COST OF THE TANK.

ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 23, 2014, I TOOK MY 2004 E320 SEDAN TO SCHUMACHER MERCEDES BENZ IN SCOTTSDALE ARIZONA. I ASKED THEM TO CHECK OUT A 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT AND INFORMED THEM THAT THERE WAS AN OCCASIONAL STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 24, 2014, THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO INFORM ME THAT THE GAS TANK AND SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF A LEAK. MY SERVICE COORDINATOR ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT IS A COMMON / KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE MAKE AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE. THE COST TO REPAIR IT WOULD BE $4000 + I CONTACTED THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND LEARNED THAT THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION AND A COMPLAINT OPENED MARCH 15, 2013 ,,, HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ISSUED AS OF THIS TIME. THE CAR HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. ON OCTOBER 24TH, I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP WHO WORKS EXCLUSIVELY ON MERCEDES BENZ VEHICLES, FOR A SECOND OPINION / EVALUATION. *TR

WE WERE GOING TO DO THE SERVICE LATER AFTER ONE DEALERSHIP TOLD US TO JUST KEEP THE CAR HALF FULL WITH FUEL UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO COMPLETE THE SERVICE REPAIR FOR OVER $1,000 OUT OF OUR OWN POCKETS. *TR

NO I HAVE AN E320 AND THEY WONT FIX THIS ISSUE. AFTER FILLING UP DRIVING WITH THE SMELL OF FUEL IN THE CABIN HAS CAUSED SERIOUS HEADACHES FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. EVEN PARKING IN MY GARAGE HAS FILLED MY WHOLE HOUSE WITH THE SMELL OF FUEL. THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES AT THIS TIME AND WAS OUTSIDE OF THE INITIAL WARRANTY SO THE $2,500 REPAIR WAS UNDERTAKEN. APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS LATER AND 40,000 MILES LATER, THE SAME SYMPTOMS RETURNED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. IT WAS DETERMINED ONCE AGAIN THAT THE SAME PROBLEM WAS OCCURRING AND THE FUEL LEVEL SENSORS WERE LEAKING FUEL AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE COST FOR THIS REPAIR WAS ESTIMATED TO BE $1,200 AND THIS TIME THE REPAIR WAS REJECTED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. THE VEHICLE HAD ALWAYS BEEN MAINTAINED BY THE DEALERSHIP SINCE THE BEGINNING AND APPARENTLY THERE HAVE BEEN NO RECALLS ISSUED THAT WE WERE AWARE OF FOR THESE MALFUNCTIONS AND DEFECTS. I HAVE CONTACTED MERCEDES CORPORATE OFFICE AND THEY OPENED UP AN INVESTIGATION ONLY TO DETERMINE THAT THE DEALERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLES BUT NEITHER PARTY WAS WILLING TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT AND NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE WOULD BE AVAILABLE OR COMMISSIONED FOR ME. WHENEVER I FILL UP MY GAS TANK, I GET A VERY STRONG GAS ODOR IN THE CAR. ITS VERY STRONG IN THE BACK SEAT AND AROUND THE REAR DRIVER WHEEL ON THE OUTSIDE. IT GOES AWAY ONCE MY TANK GETS TO 3/4 FULL APPROXIMATELY. MY KIDS ARE IN THE BACKSEAT IN THEIR CAR SEATS, INHALING THESE FUMES. NOW MY WIFE IS PREGNANT, AND SHE INHALES THESE FUMES TOO. THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE AN ARM AND A LEG. I NEED HELP. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CHECK ENGINE LAMP WOULD ILLUMINATE AND FUMES WERE EMITTED INTO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL TANK. AS A RESULT, THE FILLER NECK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE INSPECTED THOROUGHLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,500.

AFTER FILLING THE TANK THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL INSIDE THE CABIN AND ABOVE THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. THE FUEL VAPORS SATURATE THE GARAGE SPACE AND ALSO ENTER THE HOUSE ENVIRONMENT. THE FUEL LEAKS FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200 CC OF GASOLINE POOLED IN THE PLASTIC COVER OF THE SENDING UNIT. THIS FUEL EVAPORATES THROUGH THE CABIN AND OUSIDE THROUGH THE SPACE OF THE REAR LEFT WHEEL. THE CAR, MY FAMILY, AND MY HOUSE IS AT THE RISK OF FIRE AND GASOLINE EXPLOSION. THE MB AUTHORIZED DEALER DECLINED TO REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE THIS SERIOUS MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE REPAIR COST IS APPROXIMATELY $2400 WHICH INCLUDES REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK AND THE SENDING UNITS. *TT
