The passenger compartment smells like gasoline. This is due to an issue that was already investigated by nhtsa however the warranty that was extended is expired by two years. I just purchased this vehicle used and it is unsafe to drive. It did not smell like gas a few weeks ago when it was purchased. The odor is very strong in the passenger compartment.
FILLED UP GAS TANK AND HAD FUEL ODOR INSIDE CAR AND FUEL LEAKING OUTSIDE THE CAR UNTIL FUEL LEVEL WAS AROUND 3/4 OF A TANK. I BELIEVE THAT MINE FALLS UNDER ALL THE OTHER PROBLEMS LISTED FOR FUEL LEAKS FOR OTHER W211 MERCEDES. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS WAS ONLY ALLOWED FOR ORIGINAL OWNERS AND NOT FOR ANYONE THAT PURCHASED USED.

IN 2015 WE STARTED TO NOTICE THE SMELL OF GASOLINE FOLLOWING FILLING THE TANK WITH GAS. THE SMELL OF GASOLINE IS SO STRONG THAT WE HAD TO OPEN OUR GARAGE DOORS TO VENT THE FUMES. NO GASOLINE WAS SPILLED DURING REFUELING. THERE IS NO VISIBLE GAS LEAK ON THE GARAGE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE IS A 2005 MERCEDES-BENZ E320 WITH ONLY 44,000 MILES. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM WE DISCOVERED NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS OF THIS MODEL MERCEDES HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. MERCEDES HAS NO RECALL FOR THIS FUEL FUME DEFECT AND ANY REPAIR IS NOT WITHIN THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY PERIOD. NHTSA ACTION #EA13003 SUMMARY TEST & ANALYSIS BY MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS NO RISKS OF FIRE OR PASSENGER SAFETY. THIS IS BS AS FUEL FUMES WITHIN AN ENCLOSED AREA, SUCH AS A GARAGE WHERE A NATURAL GAS HOT WATER TANK EXISTS, COULD CAUSE A FIRE. THEN WOULDN'T START BUT CRANKED. SAME SYMPTOMS NEXT DAY. TOWED TO MB SAN DIEGO DIAGNOSED FUEL PUMP COMPONENTS FAILED $1,000 W/NO OFFER TO COVER UNDER RECALL. I FURTHER REVIEWED SAME INTERNET DOC'S WHICH SHOW FUEL PUMPS, FILTERS, FUEL LEVEL SENDERS ARE COVERED UNDER MB 15 YR. UNLTD MILES WARRANTY. WILL CALL SERVICE WRITER IN MORNING TO ADVISE THEY SHOULD COVER REPAIRS, TOW PLUS RENTAL CAR WHILE I WAS RESEARCHNG.

MERCEDES BENZ USA WAS CONTACTED REGARDING THE PROBLEM AND I WAS TOLD TO NEVER CONTACT THEM AGAIN. THEY ALSO SAID AN ATTORNEY WOULD SEND ME A LETTER STATING THEIR POSITION. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST TWO YEARS, AND I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE IT. THE FIRST LETTER I SENT TO THE COMPANY REGARDING THIS MATTER WAS SENT DIRECTLY TO [XXX] CANNON THE CEO OF THE USA BRANCH. THE SECOND LETTER WAS SENT TO [XXX]. CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT AT DAIMLER AG AND THE HEAD OF MERCEDES BENZ CARS IN GERMANY. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM [XXX]. I NOTED AN INCREASINGLY BAD ODOR INSIDE THE CAR SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF PURCHASE, BUT WASN'T SURE EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS AS I WAS STILL TRYING TO IDENTIFY IT. YESTERDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2013, I WENT TO A MERCEDES BENZ SPECIALISTS, LOCAL MECHANIC THAT ONLY WORKS ON MERCEDES AND USES MERCEDES PARTS, FOR AN ANNUAL OIL CHANGE AND CHECKUP AND ASKED HIM TO CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM THAT THE MERCEDES SERVICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG. HE TESTED THE FUEL TANK USING A SYSTEM TO DETECT LEAKS AND NOTED THAT THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK HAD A CRACK AND I NEED TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AND IT WOULD COST $2,082. OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS I JUST FILLED THE TANK TO HALF OR THREE FOURTHS SO IT WOULD NOT EMIT FUMES, HOWEVER, I FILLED IT UP FOR A TRIP LAST WEEK AND YOU COULD SMELL THE FUMES BADLY IN THE CAR. UPON INSPECTION BY MERCEDES BENZ CORAL GABLES, I WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE REQUIRED A NEW FUEL TANK, AS THERE IS A SMALL CRACK AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. THE TANK WAS NOT DROPPED, BUT RATHER, THE DIAGNOSIS WAS BASED ON PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AN OCCURRENCE THEY HAVE SEEN IN THE AMG CLASS AND APPEARING AS WELL WITH THE E CLASS. I ELECTED NOT TO FIX THE PROBLEM AS I WAS INFORMED THAT AS LONG AS "YOU DON'T FILL UP ALL THE WAY" IT SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM. I SUBSEQUENTLY CALLED TWO ADDITIONAL MB DEALERS AND THE SERVICE WRITER AT EACH BUSINESS SAID THE SAME THING. I WANT TO MAKE A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA SO THAT MY VEHICLE IS LOGGED WITH THE MANY OTHERS AND ADDRESSED BY MERCEDES, AS IT WOULD APPEAR THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE FUEL TANK OR A DEFECTIVE PART. I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND THE FUEL SMELL INSIDE THE CAR WAS SO STRONG IT MADE ME AND TWO CLIENTS NAUSEOUS WITH SEVERE HEADACHES THE FOLLOWING DAY. I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE DEALER, AND UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THEY NOW TELL ME THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS LEAKING BUT THE GAS TANK ITSELF ALSO IS CRACKED AND LEAKING WHICH NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR ANOTHER $2,000. I OPENED A COMPLAINT WITH MERCEDES BENZ USA. AFTER THEIR SHAM OF AN INVESTIGATION, THEY SAID THEY WOULD OFFER ME A 50% DISCOUNT ON THE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT OR ASSISTANCE ON THE PURCHASE OF A NEW VEHICLE. THE CAR NOW HAS 118,000 MILES AND IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO MAKE THE REPAIRS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER NEAR MY HOME; WALTERS MERCEDES BENZ. THE SERVICE AGENT, [XXX], CALLED AND SAID THAT THE SEALS IN THE GAS TANK WERE LEAKING AND IT WOULD COST $750 TO REPLACE THEM. ALSO, THE TECHNICIAN OBSERVED SOME POSSIBLE LEAKING ON ANOTHER HOSE TO THE TANK AND IT WOULD BE $2,400 TO HAVE THE WHOLE TANK REPLACED. I FOUND THIS OUTRAGEOUS, BUT HAD NO OTHER CHOICE. COUPLE OF MONTHS BACK, I STARTED TO GET THE STRONG GAS SMELL EVERY TIME I FILL UP THE GAS TANK. THE SMELL STAYS THERE FOR 2-3 DAYS. ABOUT A YEAR AGO, WE NOTICED A MILD GAS SMELL AFTER FILL UP. THE SMELL USED TO GO AWAY IN A MATTER OF HOURS, SO WE ATTRIBUTED THAT TO POSSIBLE SPILL DURING REFILL. GRADUALLY, SMELL BECAME STRONGER AND LASTED LONGER. EARLY JANUARY 2013, AFTER A RECENT FILL UP, WE STORED THE CAR IN GARAGE FOR 2 WEEKS WHILE USING OUR OTHER VEHICLE. THE SMELL BECAME SO STRONG, IT WAS FELT IN LAUNDRY ROOM NEXT TO THE GARAGE. SMELL WOULDN'T GO AWAY SO WE SUSPECTED A GAS LEAK. UPON EXAMINATION BY DEALER, IT WAS FOUND THAT THERE IS SIGNIFICANT GAS LEAK UNDER REAR SEAT (PASSENGER SIDE). THE LEAK WAS FROM A DEFECTIVE FUEL FILTER AND SENDER UNIT. WE FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON DEFECT WITH 2005 E320 CLASS CARS. INDEED MANUFACTURER HAD ISSUED A RECALL IN 2008 COVERING LEAKING FUEL FILTERS. THE RECALL INCLUDED 2005 E320 BUT APPARENTLY DID NOT INCLUDE MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY/HEALTH HAZARD THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *TR

EVERY TIME THE CAR IS FILLED UP WITH GAS, THERE IS A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. REMOVED THE BACK SEAT AND THE PLATE THAT COVERS THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND GAS PUDDLES UP AROUND THE SEAL OF THE SENDING UNIT. HAD SEAL REPLACED, BUT THAT ONLY HELPED FOR ABOUT A MONTH. IT ONLY DOES THIS WHEN TANK IS FULL (PROBABLY DUE TO THE PRESSURE IN THE TANK). THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE AND I TRY TO AVOID FILLING TANK COMPLETELY, BUT SOMETIMES IT'S HARD TO TELL WHEN IT'S GETTING CLOSE TO FULL. THIS IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD NOT TO MENTION THE SIGNIFICANT HEALTH ISSUES TO ALL PASSENGERS INCLUDING THE NINE YEAR OLD THAT IS TRANSPORTED IN THIS VEHICLE.
