The engine in these cars are defective and can cause serious harm due to a part that was put inside the motor made of plastic. There was a lawsuit but if you didn’t get in on it you losses out for not knowing. I was recently at Mercedes dealership to fix recalls and they brushed me off. The car can catch fire and I’m already experiencing engine failure after only owning the car for a year. They don’t care because it’s an old car but it’s still being sold to unsuspecting buyers. I’m not the only one there are thousands of us who are at risk driving these cars because Mercedes won’t admit their off the showroom floor mistake.

Certain Mercedes-Benz models 2005- 2007 M272 V6 and M273 V8’s have faced or are facing issues regarding the balance sprocket in which drives the camshaft and crankshaft of the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz had made a decision to make certain engine components out of soft metals, when such metals are not adequate in handling the stress of the engine. In particular, in many cases, the balance sprocket was made with inadequate materials and gradually deteriorated to the point in which it could not engage the timing chain and cause camshaft-crankshaft misalignment. I personally did not experience such failure yet but it is more of a concern as this is a common issue , the repair is quite substantial and the failure can damage the engine even more

Engine codes P0016 and P0017 reads cam shaft and crank shaft correlation it is everywhere on the internet and on the Mercedes Benz Forum.This is a know problem that Mercedes has ignored. its on all 2004 thru 2008 vehicles with the 3.5 engine. Calls for a balancer shaft replacement. This should definitely be a recall issue.The industry knows that is was poorly manufactured part. Your help with rectifying this issue would greatly help the and restore the reputation of Mercedes and restore faith in Mercedes Benz owners. Driving the vehicle on several occasions on Interstate 66 and the vehicle spontaneously went into limp mode. Now we find out it's a balance shaft issue and is a known problem from Mercedes in the M272 engines for our 2006 E350 4-matic. They evidently used balance shafts with materials that were too soft, resulting in premature wearing of the balance shafts with all of the M272 engines produced during this time having the problem. There was a previous class action lawsuit, which Mercedes settled, however, the consumers were not adequately notified and no recall was ever issued for the cars. Now we have 2nd or 3rd owners having these problems that didn't get a notice and have no idea there is a huge expensive and dangerous problem with their vehicle. On I-66 traffic moves at 70 mph (regular lanes) or 75 mph (express lanes). Having the vehicle spontaneously go into limp mode because of this engine issue is dangerous and could have caused a fatal accident on multiple occasions for us. Mercedes should be recalling all of these engines and fixing them properly before someone gets injured or killed. When I spoke with Mercedes, they said because I was not involved in the class action suit at that time, they were not willing to fix the car or pay for any portion of the repair, which they quoted me as costing $16,228.96. The problem is the Mercedes went into limp mode on multiple occasions and there was no check engine light to indicate what the problem was for several months. We had no warning that this was going to happen which created a dangerous situation while driving. There were several incidents on different dates spanning months before a check engine light came on with codes and Mercedes could identify the problem specifically was the balance shaft failure.

We just purchased a 2006 Mercedes for our teenage sons and had a dealer look at it before we purchased it. They told us there were a couple of codes that were worth watching but that it wasn’t anything significant right now. After the car started jerking and shaking while driving it, we brought it in to dealership where they told us it had a common code for Mercedes in this timeframe P0016. Repair estimate is nearly $5000 to replace timing chain and balance shaft, or a new engine which would be roughly the same. After researching on my own upon being told this code, I found all of the information about the class action lawsuit and settlement, which of course we are too late to be a part of. The dealer said there is a potential that the car could just seize up at some point, so I don’t want my young sons to be out on the road when that happens. I am very frustrated and upset that this wasn’t a recall since it apparently affected a huge amount of vehicles manufactured within this time frame. There is a specific list of engines with known issues and ours is among them. Mercedes Benz should be held responsible for making this right because it was definitely a quality issue. Now we are stuck with an unsafe vehicle, or a massive expense due to defect.

The crankshaft pulley is a two piece item. When excessive pressure is on it the pieces separate and disable the car. Upon replacing the belt or belt tensioner more pressure is exerted on the crankshaft pulley. Thus it fails and again disables the vehicle. When doing either of the replacement tasks Mercedes fails to check this or mention it to customers. Thus months later it fails and previous belt replacement of belt tensioner replacement has to be done again. This creates a dual expense without fixing the issue the first time. Expense is in the thousands.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, A WARNING MESSAGE OF 'RESTRICTING SYSTEM MANUFACTURE' ILLUMINATED AND 07:02 THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING, AND THE BRAKES FAILED. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A WALL AT 8-10 MPH, BUT DID NOT SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE NORMAL HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACTS RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT CALLED AN UNKNOWN DEALER AND INFORMED THEM OF THE FAILURE AND WAS PROVIDED WITH THE NUMBER TO NHTSA. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 125,663.

I NEED SOMEONE TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO. THE LAST AND MOST WORRISOME THING TO ME IS THAT THERE ARE 2 DTC CODES COMING UP CAUSING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON. HAD MECHANIC TO CLEAR THEN BUT THEY COME RIGHT BACK WHEN CAR IS STARTED. I NEED TO GET THIS CAR INSPECTED. SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO. MERCEDES-BENZ V6 M272 ENGINES HAVE TIMING CHAIN PROBLEMS CAUSED BY BALANCE SHAFT FAILURES WHICH MERCEDES HAS KNOWN ABOUT FOR YEAR. FAULTY GEARS WEAR OUT PREMATURELY, EXCESSIVELY, AND WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MALFUNCTION, THE 'CHECK ENGINE LIGHT' TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED, AND THE VEHICLE TO MISFIRE OR STOP DRIVING. WEAK MATERIALS WERE USED FOR THE BALANCE SHAFT SPROCKETS AND THE TIMING CHAIN GUIDE, MERCEDES NEVER CONTACTED ITS OWNERS ABOUT THE DEFECT WHICH CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO HALT AND THE CAR TO STOP MID-TRAFFIC. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON THE VEHICLE AT EVERY START, THROWING A P0016 AND P0017 TROUBLE CODE, WHICH RETURNS EVEN AFTER CLEARING AND RESTART. AFTER GOING TO SEVERAL MECHANICS, ALL HAVE NOTED THAT THE BALANCE SHAFT (WITHIN THE ENGINE) REQUIRES REPAIR AN ISSUE MERCEDES HAS KNOW ABOUT FOR SEVERAL YEARS, AND HAD EVEN ISSUED ITS MECHANICS WITH SERVICE BULLETINS (APRIL 23, 2009, SEE ATTACHED), BUT HAS NEVER NOTIFIED ITS CAR OWNERS OF THE HAZARDOUS DRIVING DURING ANY OF ITS SERVICE AT THE DEALERSHIP OR HAS NOT NOTIFIED WITH ANY OTHER COMMUNICATION. I ARRIVED HOME AFTER DRIVING 2 MILES FROM WORK AND WHEN I STOPPED I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND OPENED THE HOOD. THE SMOKE WOULD ALMOST STOP AND THEN BECOME THICK AGAIN, IN CYCLES OF ABOUT 1 MINUTE. THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE COOLING FAN. AFTER SEVERAL CYCLES IT BURST INTO FLAMES. FORTUNATELY WE WERE READY WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND PUT THE FIRE OUT RIGHT AWAY. THE FUSE, WHICH I BELIEVE SHOULD HAVE POPPED AND STOPPED THE CYCLING OF THE FAN, NEVER DID BLOW. I BOUGHT MY CAR USED BUT IT ONLY HAS 50,000 MILES ON IT. ALL INFORMATION IN THE CARFAX INDICATES IT WAS MAINTAINED. I DIDN'T TAKE PICTURES OF THE FIRE.

MERCEDES-BENZ HAD A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT COMPLAINT FILED FOR THIS ISSUE FOR SOME OF THEIR CARS WITH THIS PROBLEM AS WELL AS FAULTY ENGINES & IDLE GEARS. THERE ARE MORE THAN 100000 CARS FROM 2005 TO 2007 MODEL YEARS WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THEY MANAGED TO GET AWAY WITHOUT ISSUING A RECALL. WHAT SURPRISES ME IS EVEN WITH THE CLASS ACTION SUIT, THEY PAY ONLY 30% OF THE REPAIR COST. DEALERSHIP ESTIMATE FOR THIS REPAIR IS $7500. I WENT TO A HARDWARE STORE AND PARKED THE CAR IN THE STORE PARKING LOT. ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER SOMEBODY CAME IN AND ASKED ME IF I WAS DRIVING A SILVER MERCEDES; I TOLD HIM YES AND HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS ON FIRE. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE STORE I SAW MY CAR'S ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON FIRE. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED ON THE SCENE THE WHOLE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAD BEEN GUTTED AND THE FIRE HAD SPREAD TO ANOTHER CAR WHICH WAS PARKED INFRONT OF MINE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES-BENZ E350. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 TO 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE APPROACHED A RAMP AND APPLIED THE BRAKES. MESSAGES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED THAT READ "REDUCED BRAKE PRESSURE AND DEPRESS BRAKE FULLY", "TRACTION CONTROL", "ABS", AND "CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS". IN ADDITION, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF, RESTARTED, AND DRIVEN HOME. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO A MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 129,000.

THE ENGINE OF MY CAR STALLED SUDDENLY, BRAKING POWER WAS REDUCED DRAMATICALLY. I WAS ABOUT TO GET INTO A SERIOUS CRASH BUT LIKELY THIS HAPPENED IN A LOCAL STREET AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN EVERYONE WAS READY TO SLOW DOWN AND STOP. MY DEALER TOLD ME THE ENGINE STALLED DUE TO A BROKEN VACUUM INTAKE MANIFOLD LINKAGE WHICH CONTROLS AIR IN AND OUT IN THE SYSTEM. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MANIFOLD ($2100) AND MERCEDES BENZ DOES NOT OFFER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THIS COMPONENT. I WAS SURPRISED WITH THE QUALITY OF MB ESPECIALLY WHEN I CHECKED THE INTERNET TO FIND OUT HUNDREDS WITH THE SAME INCIDENT AND WITH MANY UNPLEASANT CUSTOMERS. THE BROKEN INTAKE MANIFOLD LINKAGE IS 100% DESIGN ISSUE. MY CAR HAS 107K MILES, I HAD MY EXTENDED WARRANTY UP UNTIL 100K, SO I CAN'T BELIEVE THESE 7K MILES CAUSED THIS LINKAGE TO BE BROKEN. IT IS A DESIGN ISSUE (PROBABLY CHEAP PLASTIC PART THAT AGED OVER TIME). MB HAD SEVERAL EXTENDED WARRANTY ON OTHER MAJOR COMPONENTS SUCH AS: GAS TANK ($2,400) AND SBC PUMP ($2,000) DUE TO FATAL INCIDENTS, SO I AM NOT SURE HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE IN CAR CRASHES BEFORE MB OFFERS THIS EXTENDED WARRANTY. I CAN'T BELIEVE I AM SAYING THIS ABOUT MB QUALITY, BUT JUST GO ONLINE AND YOU WILL FIND OUT MORE AND MORE ABOUT THESE ISSUES. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS COMPONENT IS THE FACT THAT IT IS UNPREDICTABLE BECAUSE IT DEPENDS ON THE POSITION OF THESE FLABS (CLOSED, SEMI OPENED, OPENED POSITION). WHICH MAKES IT SCARY TO DRIVE THE CAR WHEN YOU KNOW THAT THIS MAY HAPPEN AT ANY TIME AND IT COULD IMPACT YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF YOUR BELOVED ONES AND PROBABLY OTHERS WHO WOULD BE DRIVING AROUND YOU.

THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH 2006 MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS (MBEC) BECAUSE OF A MANUFACTURER'S AND/OR DESIGN DEFECT WHICH CAUSES THIS VEHICLE TO NOT GO INTO PROPER GEAR AND/OR STALL SUDDENLY PUTTING THE PUBLIC AT RISK. I BARELY ESCAPED BEING SMASHED INTO BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHILE MAKING A ROUTINE LEFT HAND TURN INTO A GAS STATION BECAUSE MY MBEC WAS STUCK IN GEAR AND DID NOT ACCELERATE AS IT WAS MANUFACTURED AND DESIGNED TO DO BUT RATHER SPUTTERED AT LESS THAN 5 MILES PER HOUR (MPH). THE ONLY REASON I WAS NOT T-BONED AND LIKELY SERIOUSLY INJURED ALONG WITH OTHER PEOPLE WAS BECAUSE THE OTHER DRIVERS SWERVED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC CAUSING THOSE DRIVERS TO ALSO SWERVE. MIRACULOUSLY NO ONE WAS INJURED, THIS TIME. ALSO, THE REASON WHY I WAS TURNING INTO THE GAS STATION WAS BECAUSE I WAS FORCED TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE MY MBEC WOULD NOT CHANGE GEAR AFTER I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND WAS APPROACHING RED-LINING AT AND IT SEEMED LIKE THE ENGINE MIGHT BLOW. THE TIPTRONIC ALSO FAILED DURING THIS MALFUNCTION. I HAD THE AUTHORIZED MB DEALER THAT I HAVE USED SINCE I PURCHASED MY MBEC PICKUP MY VEHICLE TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE AND MY ADVISOR TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW BALANCE SHAFT BECAUSE THE ONE IN MY VEHICLE HAD PREMATURELY WORN (EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ALWAYS STRINGENTLY FOLLOWED MY MB ADVISOR'S SUGGESTIONS) AND IT WOULD COST ROUGHLY $6,500. S/HE ALSO SAID THIS OCCURS IN ROUGHLY 15-20% OF '06 MBEC. BUT MB WOULD NOT FIX THIS SAFETY DEFECT UNLESS I PAID. WORSE YET, MY ADVISOR NEVER MADE ME AWARE OF THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE EVEN THOUGH S/HE PREVIOUSLY KNEW OR SHOULD HAVE KNOWN AND AS A RESULT PUT THE PUBLIC AT RISK BY NOT ENABLING ME TO RESOLVE THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH MY MODEL YEAR VEHICLE UNTIL THE OCCURRENCE OF A NEAR CATASTROPHE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE JERKED, STALLED, AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. ABOUT A YEAR AGO (MAY 2013) WE NOTICED GAS SMELL IN THE COMPARTMENT OF THE CAR. INITIALLY IT WAS SPORADIC. WE THOUGHT IT WAS FROM OUTSIDE OF THE CAR OR MAY BE UNDER THE CAR, OR GAS TANK CAP WAS NOT TIGHTENED PROPERLY. AFTER I TOOK MY CAR TO MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP ON 9/6/13, I FOUND OUT THAT THE SMELL WAS NOT FROM EITHER OF THE ABOVE SCENARIOS. IT WAS INDEED FROM INSIDE THE CABIN AND THE MERCEDES BENZ TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT IT WAS FROM FUEL LEAKAGE UNDER THE BACK SEAT AND IT WOULD COST $1380 TO FIX IT. ADDITIONALLY HE SAID THAT HE HAD SEEN NUMEROUS CASES LIKE MINE, AND SOME WERE SO BAD THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT IN, AND HAD TO TOW THE CAR IN. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER REPAIRS THAT I HAD TO DO WORTH $1,200, I DECIDED TO DELAY THIS REPAIR. NOW WE CAN NOT EVEN DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE INTENSE SMELL AND WILL COST ME PROBABLY MORE THAT $1,380 TO FIX IT. AFTER REFUELING, I NOTICED A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IN THE GARAGE WHERE I PARK MY CAR. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE A FEW MILES AND PARKING IN THE GARAGE, THE ODOR WAS NO LONGER THERE. I STARTED NOTICING A PATTERN THAT WHENEVER I REFUELED THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IN THE GARAGE THAT DISSIPATED ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN A FEW MILES. RIGHT AFTER I STARTED NOTICING THE GAS SMELL, THE VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I RECENTLY HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED BY AN AUTHORIZED MERCEDES BENZ SERVICE CENTER WHO STATED GAS TANK HAS CRACK AT THE TOP AND IS LEAKING FUEL. THE ENTIRE TANK AND ALL THE COMPONENTS WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AT $3,000. I MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM AND A COUPLE OF CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AND IT APPEARS THAT THE VEHICLE'S GAS TANK IS DEFECTIVE. WHILE DRIVING 70 ON HWY, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, SO I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK. MECHANIC'S DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE TUMBLE FLAP WAS BROKEN IN THE AIR INTAKE MANIFOLD. PURCHASED 2006 MERCEDES-BENZ E350 4MATIC WITH 47,851 MILES ON ODOMETER FROM MATTIE IMPORTS, INC., FALL RIVER, MA ON MAY 27, 2013. AUTOMOBILE HAD APPROXIMATELY ONE-QUARTER OF A TANK OF GASOLINE AT PURCHASE. SALESPERSON DECLINED PURCHASER'S REQUEST TO "TOP-OFF" THE GAS TANK PRIOR TO BUYER LEAVING SELLERS LOT. ON MAY 28, 2013 BUYER FILLED GAS TANK WITH FUEL. BUYER IMMEDIATELY NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR WHICH CONTINUED AFTER EXITING FUELING STATION. ODOR PROGRESSED FROM EXTERIOR OF AUTOMOBILE INTO AUTOMOBILE CABIN. BUYER CHECKED FUEL TANK FILLER CAP AND CONFIRMED IT WAS PROPERLY ENGAGED. BUYER INSPECTED THE ENTIRE AUTOMOBILE FOR ANY LEAKING FLUIDS AND FOUND NONE. THE STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE PERSISTED THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT WHILE THE AUTOMOBILE WAS PARKED IN BUYER'S GARAGE. BUYER LEFT THE GARAGE DOOR PARTIALLY OPEN AND PLACED A FAN IN THE OPENING AND SET THE FAN TO EXHAUST IN AN EFFORT TO REMOVE THE STRONG FUEL ODOR. THE FOLLOWING MORNING THE STRONG GASOLINE ODOR WAS STILL PRESENT. BUYER'S 13 YEAR OLD SON WAS UNABLE TO WITHSTAND THE ODOR AND HAD TO COVER HIS NOSE AND MOUTH WHILE PASSING THROUGH BUYER'S GARAGE. BUYER HAS EXPERIENCED NAUSEA AND LIGHTHEADEDNESS SINCE BEING EXPOSED TO THE ODOR.
