The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E350. The contact stated while the vehicle was stationary, she started to smell an abnormal fuel odor from the rear driver’s side seat. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the fuel level sending unit and the seals and gaskets to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that she was unable to continue driving the vehicle due to odor. The contact towed the vehicle to another local dealer, Mercedes-Benz of Myrtle Beach (936 Jason Blvd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, (843) 848-6800) where it was diagnosed with needing the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel line and all the seals and gaskets needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.

THE CAR WOULD NOT START FUEL PUMP FAULTY AND IS PART OF GAS TANK BAD DESIGN COST ME CLOSE TO $3800, SOME PAID BY MBZ. MBZ REPLACED 2009 GAS TANKS FOR FREE UNDER WARRANTY BUT WOULD NOT DO MINE. THIS IS A BAD DESIGN THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME ABOUT IT SO I WOULD NOT BUY THE CAR. IT IS STUPID TO HAVE TO REPLACE GAS TANK IN ORDER TO REPLACE A FUEL PUMP IN 2012 I HAD GAS LEAKAGE FROM THE SAME AREA AND I PAID TO FIX IT THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM. INSTEAD THEY KEPT SILENT WHEN I TAKE MY CAR FOR SERVICE THEY ALWAYS LIST OF THINGS TO DO SO I CAN SPEND MORE MONEY AT THE DEALERSHIP WHY THE [XXX] NO BODY BOTHERED TO TELL ME ABOUT THIS PROBLEM THAT IT WOULD COST ME A LOT OF MONEY TO FIX . THIS CAR HAS COST OVER $60,000 TO BUY AND I DID NOT PAY THAT KIND OF MONEY FOR A CAR TO LAST ME ONLY 12 YEARS. AFTER THE APPLIANCES TESTED NEGATIVE THE TECHNICIAN SURMISED THAT THE SMELL WAS POSSIBLY EMITTING FROM MY VEHICLE. THE FOLLOWING DAY I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE MERCEDES BENZ DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL TANK LEAK. THE SERVICE ADVISOR GAVE ME A VERY COSTLY ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIRS. I ELECTED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT A PRIVATE MECHANIC. UNFORTUNATELY THE ISSUE WAS NOT COMPLETELY RESOLVED AND THE VEHICLE STILL EMITS A FUEL SMELL WHEN THE TANK IS FULL. I MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM AND A COUPLE OF CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AND IT APPEARS THAT THE VEHICLE'S GAS TANK IS DEFECTIVE. I TOOK THE CAR INTO MERCEDES BENZ PARK PLACE DALLAS FOR A TRANSMISSION ISSUE IN JANUARY OF 2013 AND I ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE FUEL TANK AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE FUEL TANK ALSO AS HAVING A LEAK AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACE. THIS REPAIR WOULD COST $3000.00. I DECLINED THIS REPAIR ALSO AND STATED TO THEM THAT I FELT THAT THE CAR HAD A FAULTY FUEL TANK AS WELL AS A FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND WAS I WAS EXTREMELY UPSET HAVING TO SMELL GASOLINE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CAR IF THE TANK WAS A LITTLE BIT OVERFILLED . *TR

I THOUGHT IT WAS NOW TIME TO GET SOME PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AND ADVICE. IN JANUARY, 2012, I TOOK MY AUTOMOBILE TO ATLANTA CLASSIC CARS, INC. IN DULUTH GEORGIA 30098. AFTER THE FIRST INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD FUEL SENDING UNITS LEAK FUEL. THE NEXT VISIT, MARCH 2012, BOTH SENDING UNITS WERE REPLACED. BEFORE THE NEXT VISIT, THE FUEL FUMES CONTINUED. THE NEXT VISIT, APRIL 3, 2012, THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED DUE TO INTERMITTENT OPEN CIRCUIT. THE NEXT VISIT, APRIL 9, 2012; "THE TEAM LEADER FOUND A SLIGHT TRAIL OF FUEL RESIDUE WHICH MAY BE WHERE FUEL VAPORS ARE COMING FROM PART OF THE FUEL TANK." THE NEXT AND LAST VISIT, APRIL 12, 2012 THE FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED. NOT TRUSTING THE WORK PERFORMED BY THAT DEALERSHIP AND THE TIME IT TOOK TO FIND THAT PROBLEM, MY WIFE AND I HAD NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO TRADE THE AUTOMOBILE. THE DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A FUEL LEAK. THE LEAK WAS SEVERE ENOUGH THAT GAS HAD LEAKED INTO THE CUSHIONS OF THE BACK SEAT WHERE OUR 3 YEAR OLD TODDLER TYPICALLY SITS. THE DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A "SAFETY CONCERN". I AGREED. I ALSO EXPRESSED MY CONCERN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND MBUSA ABOUT THE GAS THAT LEAKED INTO THE SEAT CUSHION AND THAT THE LEAK SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THEIR E-CLASS MODELS. THEY WANTED $659 FOR THE REPAIR WHICH I DECLINED AS I WANTED TO FIRST DO SOME RESEARCH AND POSSIBLY GET ANOTHER QUOTE SINCE THE PRICE WAS ABSURD. I WAS THEN ASTOUNDED TO LEARN THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE EXPENSIVE VEHICLES, WITH NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS DOCUMENTED WITHIN VARIOUS AUTOMOTIVE FORUMS AND FILINGS WITH THE NHTSA. IT IS WRONG THAT A FUNDAMENTAL PART LIKE THIS SHOULD LEAK FUEL. THIS IS NOT A PART THAT SHOULD REQUIRE ANY SERVICE AND IN MOST CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. I'D LIKE TO FILE MY SAFETY COMPLAINT TOO AS MY CAR IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. MY GARAGE IS FILLED WITH GASOLINE FUMES AND WHEN I TRIED TO PULL THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE YESTERDAY, I NOTICED PHYSICAL GASOLINE DRIPPING NEAR THE BACK WHEEL. I CALLED MB USA AND THE LOCAL MB DEALER, THEY ALL SAID THAT I SHOULD STOP DRIVING IT AS ITS A FIRE/SAFETY HAZARD AND TAKE IT INTO THE LOCAL MB DEALER. UNFORTUNATELY, MB WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF THIS REPAIR AS ITS OUTSIDE THE 4 YEARS/50K MILES WARRANTY. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THE REPAIR CAN BE EXPENSIVE AND SINCE THERE'S NO RECALL FROM MB, I'D HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. IF THERE'S A RECALL (WHENEVER THAT HAPPENS, IT COULD TAKE MONTH/YEARS!!) THEN MB 'MIGHT' REIMBURSE ME. CAR'S (MERCEDES BENZ E350 SDN 2006) FUEL GAUGE SHOWED THAT THE TANK WAS HALF FULL. ABOUT TEN MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AUTOMATICALLY FROM 65 MPH TO 0 MPH. POLICE WERE CALLED TO PREVENT A PILE ON CRASH. TOWED CAR TO DEALER WHO FOUND THAT THERE WAS A GAUGE MALFUNCTION. REPLACED GAUGE. TWO MONTHS LATER, THE VERY SAME PROBLEM RECURS. LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE FUEL GAUGE IS UNRELIABLE CAN CREATE A SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY IN FREEWAY DRIVING, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS TO FIX THESE ISSUES. WHILE FIXING THE SENSORS, THE CAR HAD A DISTINCT GASOLINE ODOR ESPECIALLY WHEN TANK WAS FULL. THE DEALER DID A SMOKE TEST AND CONCLUDED THAT THE TANK WAS LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW, WITH A NEW TANK, AND NEW SENSORS FOR FUEL SUPPLY, THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RE-OCCURS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF A FUEL GAUGE MALFUNCTION.
