The brake lights on my vehicle are constantly illuminated while my headlights are on, regardless of whether or not the brakes are compressed. This is a huge safety concern for me, as other motorists can no longer see when I am braking. I was pulled over for this and given a fix it ticket.

My head lights are NOT sufficient. It does not have the option for 2 bulbs. I have changed out the bulbs 3 times while owning this vehicle and from the first night I drove it after owning it, I noticed the lights where very off. I drive around town and on dark roads where there is NO Road LIGHTS at night with my head lights on Bright and I DO NOT get brighted back. I have hit an animal due to the lights not being bright. I fear driving the car at night or where it's to dark because the light assembly is not proper. No warning lights.

Tail and brake light for the second time has failed. A safety function of this nature should not be this difficult to fix and replace. The item should be available and affordable. You literally have to take out a lone to get it fixed. So now I can't go to work or anything else with this vehicle. This is supposed to be an affordable car. So the only way for me right now to fix is park it. I hear one person say " well it's not like a wheel falling off " I said tell that to the person behind me. With all these distractions now, between phones and other fancy options on cars. I'm a truck driver so I know how important these warning devices are. It is time to set a new standard in how safety items get replaced availability and cost should never be an issue.!!!!!!!!! With out question.

I was pulled over for my BRAKE LIGHT being out. I went to the dealer and was charged $600 for a brake light assembly. My car has 35,636 miles on it, like new vehicle. Even though it is know defect Ford would not reimburse me for part. I was told it was out of warranty and NOT a saftey issue. I certainly believe that a brake light is a safety issue- especially since they have not replaced my driver side airbag. I think this part should have been recalled and I should be reimbursed. Thank you!

MY SON THE POLICE OFFICER JUST POINTED THIS OUT TO ME. HE NOTICED THIS AFTER FOLLOWING ME HOME THE OTHER NIGHT. I AM READING THAT THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. IT IS THE LEFT TAIL LIGHT NOW, BUT I GUESS THE RIGHT WILL EVENTUALLY GO TOO. I ALSO HAD TO HAVE BOTH OF THE FRONT HEAD LIGHTS REPAIRED. MY LOCAL MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO DO THIS FOR ME AT A FAIRLY REASONABLE COST. AFTER I HAD TO HAVE THE EXPENSIVE LAMP BULBS REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. NOW, MARCH 6, 2015 THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LAMP HAS GONE OUT AND I CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP ON PAYING THESE EXPENSES WHEN I NOW KNOW THAT THIS IS A FORD PROBLEM AND DUE TO POOR ENGINEERING OF THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY AND BECAUSE IT HAS NOT BEEN RE-ENGINEERED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, THIS WILL BE A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR. APPROXIMATELY 25% OF THE REAR PASSENGER-SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS ON MY CAR PERMANENTLY WENT OUT WHEN I FIRST DISCOVERED THIS PROBLEM IN JULY 2014. DURING THE FOLLOWING MONTH, ADDITIONAL LED LIGHTS IN THE REAR LIGHT ASSEMBLY FAILED UNTIL, FINALLY, NONE OF THEM WOULD LIGHT UP. THIS WAS OUTRAGEOUS IN THAT MY CAR, BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN AUGUST 2009 AND CONSISTENTLY HOUSED IN A GARAGE, WAS FEWER THAN 5 YEARS OLD AND HAD YET TO REACH THE 30,000-MILE MARK. A LICENSED PENNSYLVANIA CAR INSPECTION STATION REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WOULD NOT PASS ITS SAFETY INSPECTION UNLESS THE REAR BRAKE LIGHT ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. CONSEQUENTLY, I WAS FORCED TO DO SO; THE BILL CAME TO $445 FOR ITS REPLACEMENT. BECAUSE THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY CONSISTS OF LED LIGHTS, THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY SHOULD HAVE LASTED FOR THE LIFE OF THE AUTOMOBILE, IN MY OPINION. OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS A GLARING SAFETY DEFECT SINCE ITS MALFUNCTION ALONE RESULTS IN A FAILURE TO PASS AN ANNUAL PENNSYLVANIA AUTOMOBILE SAFETY INSPECTION. NOT TO MENTION THAT ITS REPLACEMENT COST IS ASTONISHING. I FEEL STRONGLY THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD ADDRESS THIS SITUATION SINCE OTHER MERCURY MILAN OWNERS, AS WELL AS OWNERS OF ITS TWINS -- THE FORD FUSION AND THE LINCOLN MKZ -- HAVE REPORTED ON THIS DATABASE NEARLY IDENTICAL SAFETY FAILURES. THIS VERY DISHEARTENING SINCE I SEE THAT THIS IS EVIDENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. I GUESS FORD KNEW THAT THERE WOULD BE A PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHTS AND EXCLUDED IT. I NEED THE NHTSA TO HAVE A RECALL ISSUED SO FORD WILL ADMIT THEIR PROBLEM AND MAKE IT RIGHT FOR THEIR CONSUMERS. THE APPROXIMATELY $1000 DOLLARS TO REPAIR THIS IS UNREASONABLE WHEN A SIMPLE BULB CHANGE COULD HAVE RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. IT FIRST STARTED WITH THE PASSENGER REAR TAIL LIGHT. THE LED BRAKELIGHT FAILED, LED LIGHTS ARE KNOWN TO LAST FOR 20+ YEARS AND THESE LASTED ABOUT FOUR. AFTER THAT A BULB WENT OUT, WHEN THE BULB WAS REPLACED IT STILL DIDN'T RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THERE ARE TWO COMPONENTS TO THE TAIL LIGHT, AN INNER LIGHT ATTACHED TO THE REAR TRUNK AND A OUTER LIGHT ON THE ACTUAL REAR BODY. FIRST, THE INNER PASSENGER WENT OUT, THEN THE INNER DRIVER'S AND THEN THE OUTSIDE PASSENGER. NOW FINALLY, THE OUTSIDE DRIVER'S SIDE HAS STARTED FLICKERING. DOING MINOR GOOGLE SEARCHES IMMEDIATELY RETURNS RESULTS WITH OTHER VEHICLES HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

I HAVE A 2010 MERCURY MILAN. THE MILAN IS EQUIPPED WITH LED TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHTS, UNLIKE IT'S SIBLING, THE FORD FUSION. RECENTLY, I DISCOVERED AFTER BEING PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT OPERATING. I WENT TO THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT, ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT THE TAIL LIGHT/BRAKE LIGHT/TURN SIGNAL ASSEMBLY IS ONE SEALED, UNSERVICEABLE UNIT. THERE WAS NO WARNING AND LEDS DO NOT BURN OUT THIS QUICKLY. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, FORD WILL NOT COVER THIS UNDER THEIR PREMUIMCARE ESP WARRANTY, BECAUSE THEY CONSIDER IT A CONSUMABLE OBJECT LIKE TIRES. SO ON TOP OF ALMOST GETTING KILLED BY BEING REAR-ENDED IN A COLLISION, I GOT THE PRIVILEGE OF PAYING $1000.00 TO REPLACE BOTH SEALED ASSEMBLIES. ON 12/5/2014, I NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE TAIL LIGHT WAS DIMMER THAN THE DRIVER'S SIDE TAIL LIGHT AND THE BRAKE LIGHT DID NOT BRIGHTEN WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE WHOLE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF BETWEEN $400-500 SINCE THIS IS AN LED INTEGRATED SYSTEM. FROM AN INTERNET SEARCH AND THE NHTSA COMPLAINTS, IT SEEM THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT IS OCCURRING AT LOW MILEAGES. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY AND WILL THEREFORE CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AS IS. I'M SURE THERE MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THIS ISSUE THAT CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THE INITIAL INCIDENT IN NOVEMBER, 2013 WAS THE FAILURE OF THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR LED TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THIS RESULTED IN THE BRAKE LIGHTS NOT OPERATING WHEN THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED. A POLICE OFFICER STOPPED THE CAR FOR A WARNING DUE TO THE BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE. MILEAGE ON THE CAR AT THE TIME WAS 12,700 MILES. DUE TO THE SAFETY HAZARD THE REPAIR WAS NEEDED. THIS COULD LEAD THE DRIVER BEHIND ME TO THINK I AM APPLYING MY BRAKES WHEN I AM NOT. THE REAR LAMPS ON THIS CAR ARE LED, NOT REGULAR BULBS. IT POSES A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND BECAUSE FROM MY RESEARCH IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY AGE OR MILLAGE IS SHOULD BE RECALLED AND BE REPLACED WITH A RELIABLE UNIT. BACK TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY (LED PANEL) OF THE 2010 MILAN IS FAULTY. SOME LIGHTS WOULD NOT LIGHT UP AT ALL AND AT ONE POINT SOMEONE REPORTED NONE WERE LIGHTING UP. THE CAR WAS JUST OVER THE WARRANTY WITH ONLY 16,000 MILES. CHECKING ONLINE IT APPEARS THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AND YEAR CAR AND MANY HAVE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM WITH LOW MILEAGE EVEN WITH REPLACEMENT PANELS (AT UPWARDS OF $400 FOR THE PART). AFTER BEING TOLD ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THAT OUR LEFT TAIL LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT WAS NOT WORKING, ON 5/19/14 OUR 2010 MILAN WAS TAKEN IN FOR ROUTINE MAINTENTANCE BY THE DEALER. AT THAT TIME,THEY WERE ASKED TO ADDRESS THE TAIL LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAD 35,070 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND ALTHOUGH THE NEW CAR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, WE HAD PURCHASED BOTH PREMIUM CARE AND ESP AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE TO THE TUNE OF OVER $2000. I WAS SHOCKED AND VERY ANGRY WHEN I WAS INFORMED THAT THE LEFT LED TAIL LIGHT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $400 AND IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER EITHER PROGRAM. SUBSEQUENTLY, IN CHECKING THE SMALL PRINT, I DISCOVERED THAT LED LIGHTS WERE INDEED EXCLUDED UNDER EITHER PROGRAM. CHECKING FURTHER, I FOUND THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF WHAT CERTAINLY APPEARS TO BE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND A SAFETY ISSUE REGARDING THE LED TAIL LIGHTS THE FORD DEALER SERVICE ADVISOR DID NOT SEEM BE SURPRISED AT MY OUTRAGE SINCE THIS SEEMINGLY IS A PROBLEM THAT HE EVIDENTLY HAS DEALT WITH BEFORE. NOW IT APPEARS MY RIGHT BRAKE LIGHT IS STAYING LIT AND DOES NOT FUNCTION WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED AND I COULD BE FACED WITH A $1000 REPAIR BILL. EVIDENTLY FORD IS GOING TO HAVE TO BE FORCED TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. ONE COULD BE DRIVING ALONG WITHOUT KNOWING THEIR STOP/BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING SINCE THERE IS NO VISUAL ALERT ON THE MESSAGE CENTER AND WONDER WHY THEY WERE SUDDENLY REAR-ENDED BY A FOLLOWING VEHICLE AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. BESIDES THE EXPENSE TO THE OWNER, THERE IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED! THE LACK OF BRAKE LIGHTS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY AND OR DEATH AND CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE. IMMEDIATELY NOTICED ISSUES WITH THE 6-SPEED 6F35 AUTOMATIC CAUSING THE CAR TO STOP ACCELERATING UNDER LOAD, LEAVING ME DEAD IN THE WATER WHEN MERGING IN TRAFFIC. I WAS NOT INFORMED THAT FORD ALREADY KNEW OF ISSUES AND I WAS IN AND OUT OF THE DEALER WITH NOTHING DONE, UNTIL THE TRANY HAD MORE DAMAGE. IT WAS REPAIRED BUT NEVER PROPERLY STRESS TESTED, BY EITHER OF TWO DEALERSHIPS I WENT TO. ACCORDING TO THE TSB IF THE TRANY EXHIBITED CERTAIN GRADES OF FAILURE, IT REQUIRED REPROGRAMMING AND THEN VALVE BODY REPLACEMENT, FOLLOWED BY A STRESS TEST TO VERIFY THERE WAS NOT ANY MORE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. THE MOST I GOT AFTER THE VALVE BODY WAS CHANGED WAS A SUGGESTION THAT I CHANGE MY TRANY FLUID THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN CHANGED BY FORD 20K MILES EARLIER. I THEN STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH THE REAR TAIL LIGHTS (BRAKE/PARKING), WITH ONES FLICKERING INTERMITTENTLY IN THE COLD AND THEN DIEING COMPLETELY, OR GOING FULL INTENSITY AND NEVER SWITCHING BACK TO JUST PARKING LIGHT MODE. HAD TO REPLACE BOTH AT HIGH COST, FORD LISTS $400 EACH, BASICALLY FOR THE EQUIVALENT OF A $2 BULB. I AM AN EE, SPECIALIZING IN MANUFACTURING, AND AFTER TAKING ONE OF THE FAILING ONES APART FOUND IT IS WAS PROBABLY RELATED TO POOR PART CHOICE OR DESIGN. WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE ON (AT NIGHT), THE REAR LIGHTS ARE CONTINUOUSLY AT THEIR HIGHEST BRIGHTNESS, AS IF THE BRAKES WERE PRESSED DOWN. SO, IT APPEARS THAT THE BRAKES ARE ON CONTINUOUSLY. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED DOWN IS THAT THE CENTRAL LIGHT HIGH UP ON THE TRUNK TURNS ON. THIS IS ONLY AN ISSUE AT NIGHT- DURING THE DAY THE BRAKE LIGHTS FUNCTION NORMALLY. BASED ON INTERNET FORUMS AT EDMUNDS AND CONSUMER REPORTS, AMONG OTHERS, I HAVE FOUND AT LEAST 10 OTHER INSTANCES OF THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH 2010 MERCURY MILANS, MOST WITH LOW MILEAGE: E.G. I LOOKED IN THE HANDBOOK FOR A BULB NUMBER AND IT WAS NOTED THAT IT MUST BE REPLACED BY THE DEALER. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS AN LED ASSEMBLY AND THE WHOLE TAILLIGHT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS FURTHER INFORMED THAT THE LED'S WERE NOT THE PROBLEM , BUT THE BALLAST IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM THAT WAS CAUSING THE FAILURE. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THE REPLACEMENT WAS $500.00. LED'S ARE SUPPOSED TO LAST FOR THOUSANDS OF HOURS, UNFORTUNATELY, JUDGING FROM THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET, MY SITUATION IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. IT IS RIDICULOUS TO HAVE TO PAY OVER $500 TO FIX A FAULTY BRAKE/TAILLIGHT. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN ON JANUARY 9TH AND WAS TOLD THAT BOTH THE RIGHT AND LEFT TAIL LIGHTS HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THE COST WOULD BE $1,100. THE TIME OF THIS SERVICE WAS TWO MONTHS AND LESS THAN TWO THOUSAND MILES PAST THE BASIC WARRANTY. I WAS SHOCKED AND VERY UNHAPPY AS I FELT THAT THIS WAS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AS THE LEDS SHOULD LAST 10,000 HOURS OR MORE. THESE HAD, AT MOST, 700 HOURS. THE DEFECT MAY WELL HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD, BUT I NEVER NOTICED IT AS NO INDICATOR LIGHT EVER WENT ON. THE SERVICE REP AND SERVICE MANAGER CONTACTED FORD AND THERE WAS AN ADJUSTMENT MADE WHERE I PAID 30% OR $325. *TR

CARRIED MY MILAN PREMIER FOR ITS REQUIRED ANNUAL STATE OF NC INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE FAILED THE INSPECTION DUE TO THE FOLLOWING: THE REAR LED LIGHTS GLOWED IN THE BRAKE LIGHT MODE WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS WERE TURNED ON. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE SMALL REAR LIGHT BELOW THE REAR SPOILER CAME ON. BOTH REAR LAMP ASSEMBLIES HAD TO BE REPLACED BY A FORD DEALER. WITHOUT THE INSPECTION I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN THE PROBLEM EXISTED. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET INDICATES MANY SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH MILAN PREMIER LED LIGHTS. THIS IS MY FIRST VEHICLE WITH LED LIGHTS. BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE, A WARNING SYSTEM SHOULD BE PLACED ON VEHICLES WITH THESE LIGHTS IF THEY PERFORM IN THIS MANNER WHEN MALFUNCTIONING. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED HE RECENTLY NOTICED A CRACK IN THE SIDEWALL NEAR THE TOP OF ALL THE TIRES, LOCATED IN A GROOVE THAT CIRCLED THE TIRES. THE TIRES WERE INSPECTED, AND A GESTURE OF GOODWILL CREDIT WAS OFFERED. THE STORE REPRESENTATIVE BLAMED THE CONDITION ON DRY ROT AND FURTHER STATED THAT ANY TYPE OF SOLUTION WOULD HASTENED THE CRACKING PROBLEM. UPDATED 04/03/14

I COMMUTE APPROX 45 MILES TO WORK ON A DAILY BASIS MONDAY THRU FRIDAY. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT ALSO COMMUTES, AND ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS SHE HAS CALLED ME AND ASKED IF I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE AND WHERE I WAS LOCATED, SHE SAID I CAN TELL WHEN YOU ARE ON THE ROAD, AS YOUR TAIL LIGHTS ARE ALWAYS SO MUCH BRIGHTER THAN EVERYONE'S. APPROX A MONTH AND A HALF AGO, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND MY FRIEND ASKED ME TO STEP ON THE BRAKES, SHE NOTED THAT THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IN THE LIGHTING ON THE BACK OF MY CAR WAS THAT THE BRAKE LIGHT IN THE BACK WINDOW CAME ON, THE TAILLIGHT-BRAKE LIGHTS DIDN'T CHANGE WHEN I STEPPED ON THEM BRAKE. I HAVE SINCE TAKEN MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT WHAT IS THE MATTER, ONE DEALERSHIP REPORTED THAT I HAVE AN LED BOARD OUT, ON BOTH SIDES, APPROX COST 397 DOLLARS A PIECE. I THEN TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE SPENT 2 WEEKS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, THEY CHANGED THE SWITCH UNDER THE DASH, THOUGHT IT WAS FIXED AND THEN COULDN'T GET THE CAR OUT OF GEAR. THEY THEN TOOK A TAILLIGHT OUT OF ANOTHER MERCURY MILAN ON THEIR LOT AND PUT IT IN MY CAR, WHICH WORKED, BUT THEN DIDN'T ON THE OTHER CAR. THE MECHANIC I SPOKE WITH SAID THEY HAD NOT SEEN THIS BEFORE, BUT HAD NEVER LOOKED FOR IT BECAUSE NO ONE HAD BROUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION, HE REPORTED THAT HE WAS GOING TO CHECK ALL THE CARS ON THEIR LOT AND WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY ISSUE, THAT I COULD HAVE VERY EASILY HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CHANGE IN THE BRAKE LIGHTS. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON , THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON CONTINUOUSLY. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 MERCURY MILAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE BRAKE LIGHT WOULD FLICKER ON AND OFF OR WOULD FAIL INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,700 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,200.
