Bought this car less then a year ago with 38k miles and just last week after coming back from vacation my power steering system went while on the expressway. The advancetrac warning light came on and then the service power steering now. The steering wheel was impossible to turn and to make matters worse it was snowing out.
The electric power steering has failed again this will make it twice in 18 months the last time it cost 1800 dollars to fix it know that only some of the 2010 Mercury Milans are on a recall list unfortunately mine is not on that list why because it is absurd that I should I have to make this repair for 1800 dollars again you cant safely drive this car it takes everything I have to turn the steering wheel

I experienced a loss of power steering while driving and a dash display "Service Power Steering Now" and "Service Advancetrac". The messages started just before the failure. The lack of power steering was a risk to everyone as the car could only be turned with significant effort and not respond to quick movement. The dash messages are still on after a restart and the car cannot be driven because of safety. My independent mechanic confirmed the issue and fix to be a bad rack. He noted the rack part number is the same as the 2011 Milan, currently under recall for this issue. However, the 2010 is not included.

started vehicle, "power steering assist fault" message appeared on dash message center, unable to turn steering wheel. Turn car off, waited, turn back on, message appeared again. tried an additional 3 times, same results. Had to leave the car where i was visiting.
My power steering light came on and then immediately the wheel got tight. I was unable to turn the wheel and then eventually the car is un drivable. There is a lot of complaints about this happening to thousands of cars and it is still under investigation. Imagin someone jumps out in front of you and you are stopping and unable to maneuver your car out of the way. By the grace of God I was able to do so. Please advise me when this recall is open.

After turning the car on one morning, an alert displayed on the dash saying "Power Steering Assist Fault" and "Service Advancetrac". I turned the car off, and back on, but the same message appeared. When driving, there is no power steering and it is difficult to turn the steering wheel. The Milan only has 110,000 miles. Ford needs to issue a recall as this is obviously a defect affecting many customers.
Upon starting the vehicle, the steering wheel is firm and very difficult to manouver. It requires a great amount of strenght to just turn. The vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer and by a mechanic and both said there was a problem with the steering wheel.

I have a 2010 Mercury Milan with only 60000 miles on it and the electric power steering went out. It happened while i was driving causing the car to hard right. The part costs $900 and then it has to be programmed at a dealership. I know there was a recall for this but only for the 2011 model. After researching and reading other safety complaints, it's pretty clear that a recall should be done for the 2010 model.

While driving the dash displayed Service Power Steering Now & Advance Trac. The car seemed normal until we pullled off the side of the road & turned off the ignition. Restarted & there was not any power assist & the traction control was iit up. It was extremely hard to steer so we had it towed.

Steering became hard to steer. Power steering assist failure light on and 75 years old hardly could turn wheel. Many 2010 Milan's are having same problem. I cannot afford the repair. I noticed 2011-2012 Milan's are recalled for a fix not 2010??? Please help
Periodically I would receive a a steering assist fault. Now my steering is completely out with the same warning. With the steering assist out the vehicle is very hard to steer and dangerous. There is a recall for 2010 Mariner and other ford vehicles but not the mercury with the same system. Also the 2011 Milan has recalls for this issue but want me to pay thousands to repair my 2010 It’s the same system and parts for this issue

I was driving to the store, luckily only going 30mph. Suddenly the power steering stopped working, the message center displayed "service power steering now" and "service advancetrac" along with an illuminated light on the dash. I've looked into the issue and there is no recall for 2010 models. Only 2011. Knowing my way around cars, I've looked into purchasing a new steering rack and installing it but new they are $1000 or more. This issue needs to be resolved with a recall. Things could have gone a lot different if I was on the highway and this happened.
I drove my Mercury Milan to a store a few blocks from my house and when I tried to drive home, I couldn't get the steering to turn. I turned my car off and tried again and same thing. I waited a while longer, tried again, and was able to turn it. I thought it was just a fluke. A couple days later the same thing happened and a message "Power Steering Assist Fault" appeared. My husband and I then took it to our local independent mechanic. He had to replace the steering rack and pinion. He said Ford has a recall for the 2011 Milan for this same problem but not for the 2010. I do quite a bit of interstate driving and am thankful it didn't go out while I was driving at a high rate of speed or it could have been a major safety concern (as it has been for others apparently).
The power steering in my car just randomly started getting really hard to steer while I was driving out of my neighborhood a few days ago. I was turning a corner and it became so hard to steer, I almost got hit by another vehicle coming really fast and I had both of my small children in my car with me. I have researched and see that a 2011 is recalled for this same exact issue but my 2010 is not. I didn’t have any warning lights come on until it started locking up. I’m so upset that this is not an issue that needs to be fixed by a recall. This is so scary for myself and for my children.

I backed out of a parking space in a parking lot and turned the steering wheel left then as I put vehicle into "drive" my steering seemed to lock up and became extremely hard to turn. I kept attempting to turn wheel and suddenly it was easily turned again as normal. While I was driving home the power steering stopped working causing steering wheel to feel as if locked again and almost impossible to turn in any direction. I almost wrecked my vehicle and hit another vehicle on the road way but hit my brakes and continued to aggressively turn the wheel to missed the vehicle in front of me. I heard and felt a pop and then steering wheel was easily turned again. I barely missed the vehicle in front of me but I did hit the curb and a bicycle a pedestrian was holding next to him on sidewalk. He was able to jump out of the way and was fortunately unharmed. I stopped my vehicle and parked immediately. I called my husband and he came to get the vehicle and I drove his home. He had no problems driving vehicle home and power steering was working as normal but once he was close to pulling into the driveway, a warning message on dash read "service power steering now".... there were no warning of this problem what so ever and just suddenly happened. Very dangerous and I have read many many others have had same issue with exact make and model of 2010 mercury milan. Please add this issue with power steering to recall list so others don't get hurt. I hurt my neck & wrist when I hit that curb and bicycle. I also had to pay for bicycle I hit.. A code reader was put onto car the next day and gave codes C-1963 and C-1277 if that helps with the recall. Thank you for your time and concern in this matter and I apologize for any inconvenience.

As I was driving the service power steering now was indicated on the dash and the steering got super tight and almost caused an accident.
The power steering went out while I was driving in a parking lot. I replaced the rack and pinion and it went out again the day after I got it fixed. Warning lights saying fix power steering now and trac control are on. My mechanic can’t figure out why the power steering keeps going out and isn’t sure how to fix it.

Prior to incident I had a light come on power steering assist fail I would turn the car off and it would go away and didn’t have any issues. I was on a curvy county road leaving work and I got about a block away from job and going about 45 mph when my car starts ringing and said power steering assist fault and my steering was completely locked up I had to slam my brakes before I went off the road. Very scary I also had another light come on as I was sitting parked saying service advancetrac. Thankfully I wasn’t injured and it happens right before a sharp curve. It’s nearly impossible to turn the wheel. This could have been deadly. I had to get my car towed home. I called the Ford dealer about it and was informed it would need a rack and pinion and reprogramming that could cost me thousands of dollars. After researching the issue this has been a recall on many of the Mercury and fords and for some reason my year model is not included. Very dissatisfied with all the recalls I’ve already had. The purge valve almost got me killed in an intersection and caused my car to seize up in the middle of a busy hwy and would not go, like it wasn’t getting gas. I paid to have it fixed and about 8 months later they recalled it.
My 2010 Mercury Milan power steering fault light comes on, when it's on no power steering. So far it has happen when I turn the car on. I took it to the dealer and they informed me that the electric steering rack has to be replaced because the power steering can go out while I'm driving. I researched and found that the 2011 Mercury Milan had a recall on the above problem. Also the same exact part was used on both model years. Not sure why the 2010 was not included in this recall. Both cars were assembled at Hermosillo, Mexico.
In April of 2014 I was driving down a major highway in Phoenix, AZ when suddenly the power steering on the car failed and I received a warning message from the car. I had taken the vehicle to Earnhardt Ford in Chandler, AZ twice prior to this incident and worked with service advisor Gina prior to this incident because the power steering had also stopped working previously but would start working again a few moments after turning on the ignition so Earnhardt Ford was unable to reproduce the issue. After the power steering failed in April 2014, I drove the car to San tan Ford in the gilbert, az area. After a few days, I was quoted a repair price of $7,000 to replace the steering rack entirely. I was told there was no way to repair individual parts in the rack and the whole thing had to be replaced. I had purchased the vehicle as a certified pre-owned car from Sanderson Ford of Glendale, AZ in October of 2012 with roughly 50,000 miles on it. By the time of the incident in April of 2014, the car had roughly 98,000 miles on it and San Tan Ford refused to repair the car under warranty. When I contacted my salesman who sold me the car at Sanderson, he said I that I should buy a pickup truck instead since that might be more reliable, and that was all he had to say about the situation. I sold the Mercury Milan on April 28 of 2014 and traded it in for another vehicle at Van Chevrolet of Scottsdale, AZ since the repair costs closely matched the value of the Milan even if it didn’t need repairs. In 2015, a recall was announced related to a power steering fault in mercury Milan’s. I strongly believe my vehicle was affected by this recall.
For years I have sporadically gotten a "Power Steering Sensor Fault" displayed when I would start the car. You could barely turn the steering wheel. In searching the Owner's Manual, owners are advised to turn off the ignition, wait briefly then restart the car (how this issue got into the Owner's Manual and could not be addressed and eliminated, I don't understand). This would correct the fault and the power steering would function normally. Fortunately it never happened while driving. In the last week this display was occurring more frequently until on 5/16/21 it would not go away and I could not drive the car. Today, 5/20/21 I got it towed to the local Ford dealer. The situation will probably not be diagnosed until next week. From reading everything on the internet, this is a routine safety concern, and a recall for the control module has been issued on the 2011-2015 Milan models. Unfortunately my car is 2010 and is not included in the recall. Aren't we talking about an identical control module as to those that have been recalled?? Then why wouldn't the NHTSA not be concerned about this very similar safety issue??!! I'm thankful this didn't happed to me while driving!
POWER STEERING HAS FAILED MULTIPLE TIMES ON THE VEHICLE. THE DASHBOARD DISPLAYS 'POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT' AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED. THIS OCCURRED BOTH WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND IN MOTION. FORTUNATELY I WAS DRIVING IN A SAFE LOCATION EACH TIME, BUT HAD IT BEEN ON A HIGHWAY THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE ON 2011 MERCURY MILANS, BUT NOT ON 2010 MODELS.

I WAS AT A STORE FOR A WHILE I CAME OUTSIDE I CRANK MY CAR PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE SIMULTANEOUSLY THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT THE ABS SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT I DID SEE. THIS IS ALL THE SYMPTOMS OF A RECALL BUT IT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH MY VIN NUMBER NOW THE DEALERSHIP THAT HAS MY VEHICLE HAS SERVICE THREE OTHER RECALLS WHERE IS SERVICING THREE OTHER RECALLS THAT HAS TOLD ME THAT NOW I WILL HAVE TO PAY $3,500 FOR A RACK AND PINION REPLACEMENT AND WHATEVER THIS RECALL CAUSES FOR MY BRAKES

I PULLED BACK UP INTO THE PARKING SPACE AND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND WHEN I RESTARTED IT, EVERYTHING WAS OKAY. I SEE WHERE THIS IS A RECALL ON MERCURY MILAN 2011 AND AFTER. PLEASE CONSIDER RECALLING THIS ON THE 2010 MODELS AS I SEE THERE ARE LOTS OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS HAPPENING TO THE 2010 MERCURY MILAN. MY WIFE WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AT A SHOPPING CENTER WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT ON OUR 2010 MILAN. THERE WERE NO PREVIOUS WARNING NOTIFICATIONS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. THE WARNING LIGHTS INDICATED TO SERVICE ADVANCE TRACK AND SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW. I HAVE READ THAT THERE ARE RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM WITH 2011 MILAN'S AND ABOVE BUT NOT THE 2010. WERE THE SAME STEERING COMPONENTS INSTALLED IN THE 2010 AS IN THE 2011 AND ABOVE. I'M THANKFUL THAT MY WIFE WAS JUST IN A PARKING LOT WHEN THIS TOOK PLACE AND NO ON THE EXPRESS WAY. CURRENTLY AT THE FORD DEALER. WAITING TO SEE WHAT THE COST WILL BE TO REPAIR !!!!! I WAS ABLE TO GET IT INTO A NEW AUTO REPAIR PLACE WHO DIAGNOSED THE ENTIRE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM AS HAVING MALFUNCTIONED AND HAD TO REPLACE THE RACK AND PINION, COSTING ME OVER $2000. THE 2011-2013 MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS EXACT REASON. THE 2010 SHOULD BE AS WELL. IF I HAD BEEN ON BACKROADS DRIVING FOR MY JOB, WHICH I OFTEN AM, WHEN THIS HAD GONE OUT, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A REAL SAFETY ISSUE.

I DROVE THE CAR TO THE CLOSEST MECHANIC SHOP. THE MECHANIC MENTIONED TO ME THAT I HAVE TO REPLACE THE STEERING RACK AND PINION AND PERFORM A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT I MAY HAVE TO REPROGRAM THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. HE GAVE ME A FAT ESTIMATE OF $2100. APPARENTLY THIS SAME ISSUE HAS BEEN RECALLED BY FORD ON THEIR 2011-13 MODELS BUT NOT ON 2010. I WAS SURPRISED TO READ THAT AND REPUTED COMPANIES LIKE FORD DOES NOT TAKE CARE OF THIS ISSUE FOR THEIR VALUED (?) CUSTOMERS. THE CAR IS NOT WORTH PUTTING THAT KIND OF MONEY IN IT. I MAY JUST PUT THAT MONEY AS A DOWN PAYMENT AND GET ANOTHER CAR.

THE CAR IS ABSOLUTELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN THIS CONDITION AND COULD HAVE EASILY CAUSED A CRASH AS IT HAPPENED MID-TURN WHEN EXITING THE FREEWAY. IN DOING SOME RESEARCH, I UNDERSTAND THE 2011 MERCURY MILAN AND FORD FUSIONS HAVE BOTH BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MODULE FAILURE. MY 2010 MILAN USES THE EXACT SAME ASSEMBLY AND THE REPAIR COST IS SIGNIFICANT AS I'VE RECEIVED QUOTES RANGING FROM $1600-2100. MY 2010 MILAN HAS LESS THAN 63,000 MILES AND IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO EXPECT THE OWNER TO PAY THESE REPAIR COSTS ON A VEHICLE WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE. PLEASE REVIEW THE PROBLEM AND EXTEND THE RECALL TO INCLUDE 2010 MODELS WHICH AT THIS POINT WOULD ALLOW ME TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE COSTS OF THE REPAIR. THEY MAY HAVE BEEN, BUT IT PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT IT IS MORE LIKELY THE POWER STEERING PART IS FAULTY. THE NEXT DAY WE WENT TO GO GET A NEW TIRE TO REPLACE THE SPARE THINKING MAYBE IT WAS THE SPARE THAT CAUSED THE SERVICE MESSAGES TO APPEAR ON THE DASHBOARD BUT EVEN WITH THE TIRE CHANGE THE STEERING WHEEL IS STILL NOT ABLE TO ALLOW ANY SORT OF TURNING MOTION UNLESS THERE IS AN EXTREMELY STRONG EFFORT TO TURN IT. I'M AWARE THAT THIS EXACT INCIDENT ALSO HAPPENED TO ANOTHER CUSTOMER. I'M ALSO AWARE HOW THERE'S A RECALL ON THE 2011 BUT NOT ON THE 2010. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE GIVEN FOR THIS YEAR ALSO BECAUSE I'VE SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING AND ADVANCE TRAC. STARTED THE CAR THE LIGHTS FLASHED BACK ON AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL EVEN THOUGH THE 2011 MERCURY MILAN IS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. CALLED FORD AND THEY SAID THE ONLY WAY TO EVEN HAVE THIS COVERED IS TO PAY A FEE FOR THE CAR TO BE DIAGNOSED UNDER THE RECALL AND HAVE IT SENT IN TO THE SPECIAL SERVICE SUPPORT CENTER. THEY MAY NOT COVER THE ISSUE, EVEN THOUGH ALL THE OTHER RELATED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. AS IT IS THE SAME PART IT SHOULD FALL UNDER THIS SAME RECALL, HOWEVER IT DOESN'T. THIS PART IS CONTAINED WITHIN THE RACK AND PINION SYSTEM REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE SYSTEM AT A COST OF $1800-$2000.

IT HAS HAPPENED IN ALL TYPES OF CONDITIONS: STOP AND GO TRAFFIC; MERGING ONTO A FREEWAY. THE LAST TIME BLACK SMOKE CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR 6 WEEKS. A WEEK AFTER IT WAS SO CALLED "REPAIRED" THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. I STARTED A "LEMON LAW" COMPLAINT IN MARCH 2012. MY MOTHER BECAME FATALLY ILL AND DIED AND I COULD NOT COMPLETE THE CLAIM. JUNE 15, 2012 I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AND THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILED. I COULD NOT STOP. I CRASHED INTO A CEMENT WALL. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. I GOT WHIPLASH. MY INSURANCE COMPANY WILL NOT PAY THE BALANCE REMAINING ON THE CAR. BBB STOPPED "LEMON LAW" CASE BECAUSE THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT. NO ATTORNEY WILL TAKE THE CASE BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO BE GAINED. I AM WITHOUT A CAR; IN DEBT; INJURED; DRIVING A RENTAL CAR AND WORKING 12 HOURS A DAY TO BUY A NEW CAR.
