THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V266000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES). THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THIS CAR HAS A BRAKE PEDAL THAT WOBBLES SIDE TO SIDE 7 MM AND A GAS PEDAL THAT WOBBLES SIDE TO SIDE 1 CM. ODI IN WASHINGTON TOLD ME THAT AS BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL UNIT IS BROUGHT FORWARD THE 3 INCH DISTANCE FOR A SHORTER PERSON THE SIDE TO SIDE WOBBLE OF BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES WORSE CAUSING YOU TO HIT THE GAS. THEY ALSO SAID ADJUSTMENT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE ON THIS CAR. FORD REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEM AND TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS VEHICLE IS VERY, VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.

ONE DAY THE DRIVER WAS TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ONTO A GRASSY MEDIAN AND HIT A LIGHT POLE. THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST AFTER HITTING A VEHICLE HEAD ON. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND BOTH OCCUPANTS WERE INJURED. ON INSPECTION OF THE CAR IT WAS NOTED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD EXCESSIVE SIDE TO SIDE MOVEMENT. RESULTING IN DAMAGE. CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IS THE BRAKE/GAS PEDAL ARE TOO CLOSE TO EACH OTHER, ALSO THE PEDAL ATTACHMENT ASSEMBLY ON THESE ADJUSTABLE PEDALS IS SUCH A LOOSE FIT THAT WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE DRIVER FOOT CAN STRAY TO THE RIGHT END OF THE PEDAL AND THE FOOT WILL PICK UP THE GAS PEDAL AND THE GAS PEDAL WILL WIN.
WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AT HIGHWAY SPEED, (55+) THE BRAKES SHUDDER AND VIBRATE THE STEERING WHEEL. TOOK CAR TO STUART POWELL, FORD-MERCURY, DANVILLE, KY. AND WAS TOLD THE ROTORS WERE SURFACED AND THE BRAKES WERE REPAIRED. ABOUT 1 1/2 MONTHS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN IN ADDITION TO WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED IT SEEMS HARD AND DOESN'T STOP UNLESS A LOT OF PRESSURE IS APPLIED. ALSO WHEN PUTTING ENOUGH PRESSURE ON THE PEDAL TO STOP, THE PEDAL GOES ALMOST TO THE FLOOR . TOOK THE CAR BACK TO STUART POWELL FORD-MERCURY AND THEY KEPT IT FOR ONE FULL DAY, TEST DROVE IT FOR 1.2 MILES AND TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I BELIEVE THE BRAKES ON THIS CAR NEED TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE I HAVE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.*AK
UPON BRAKING TO A STOP, MY WIFE AND I EACH HAD SEVERAL INCIDENCES OF HITTING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND GAS PEDAL SIMOULTANEOULY CAUSING CAR TO ACCELERATE INSTEAD OF STOPPING. THE CURE IS TO HAVE THE BRAKES ENGAGE AT A HIGHER POINT SO THAT THE FOOT IS SUFFECIENTLY ABOVE THE GAS PEDAL AS IS THE CASE WITH MY 1988, BMW 325I. OF COURSE, SEPARATING THE TWO PEDALS WOULD ALSO HELP. FORTUNATELY, ONLY ONE INCIDENT CAUSED A MINOR ACCIDENT WITH NEGLIBLE DAMAGE. A FORD ENGINEER HAS REPORTED THAT ALL BRAKE OPERATIONS ARE NORMAL ON MY CAR. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT DESIGN STANDARDS SHOULD BE EMPLOYED IN THE LOCATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE GAS PEDAL. FORD ALSO REPORTED THAT HERE HAS NEVER BEEN A COMPLAINT REGARDING A SIMILAR SITUATION. IS THIS TRUE? FORD ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THERE IS NO "UP / DOWN" ADUSTMENT FACTOR IN THE RELATION TO WHEN THE BRAKES ENGAGE. THE CAR HAS THE ADUSTIBLE GAS AND BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY THAT ADJUSTS TO ALLOW PETITE DRIVERS TO SIT FURTHER FROM THE STEERING WHEEL FOR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT SAFETY. AIRBAG AND ABS LIGHTS ON CONTROL PANEL COME ON INTERMITTENTLY. HAPPENS WHEN CONSUMER USES POWER WINDOWS. WHEN BRAKES ARE DEPRESSED, ALL DASH LIGHTS GO DIM. VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. *AK
GAS AND BRAKE PEDALS ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION CONSUMER HIT BOTH PEDALS AT THE SAME TIME. THIS POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK. *AK
THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED FAILURE OF THE ANIT LOCK BRAKE MODULE WHICH CAUSED BRAKE FAILURE AND ALMOST RESULTED IN VEHICLE COLLISION. *MJS
THE BRAKE PEDAL AND ACCELERATOR ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER AND ALMOST THE SAME HEIGHT. SO, IF YOUR FOOT IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT IS VERY EASY TO ALSO DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR AT THE SAME TIME. SEVERAL TIMES WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT, I DEPRESSED BOTH THE ACCELERATOR AND THE BRAKE PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME. IT FELT AS IF THE ACCELERATOR HAD STUCK.
SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON TWO OCCASIONS; 1ST OCCURRED AT 593 MILES AT A SERVICE STATION AFTER TURNING ON THE VEHICLE AND SHIFTING INTO GEAR, AND 2ND OCCURRED AT 894 MILES WHEN VEHICLE WAS GOING 15-20 MPH AND BRAKES WERE APPLIED TO BRING VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE COMPUTER SENSOR NEEDED READJUSTING. *AK THE DEALER REPROGRAMMMED THE PCM AS THE SOLUTION FOR ENGINE SURGING. THE BRAKES FAILURE WAS DUE TO BEING OVER POWERED BY THE ENGINE SURGE. *YH

VEHICLE WOULD START TO SPONTANEOUSLY ACCELERATE ON ITS ON POWER. AFTER ENGINE WAS TURNED ON AND THE GEAR CHANGED TO DRIVE, VEHICLE WOULD JUMP ON ITS OWN. WHILE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, BRAKES STARTED TO MALFUNCTION, AND VEHICLE COULD ONLY STOP WHEN THE COMPLETE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. DEALER HAD ADVISED CONSUMER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS IN "PERFECT CONDITION". DEFECT CAN CAUSE CONSUMER TO LOSE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.*AK THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS ENGAGE SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE PEDALS ARE SET UNUSUALLY CLOSE TOGETHER. THE DRIVER HAS NO MEANS TO KNOW THE STATE OF PEDAL ADJUSTMENT. *YH

CONSUMER BELIEVED THAT THE TWO PEDALS ARE TOO CLOSE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL DOES NOT SIT HIGH ENOUGH, THIS CONDITION CAUSES A PROBLEM WHEN APPLYING THE THE BRAKE--ALSO APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AT SAME TIME. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE WAY THE VEHICLE WAS MADE, AND NOTHING ELSE COULD BE DONE AT THIS TIME. *AK *ML
