THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND VERIFIED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V143001 (POWER TRAIN: TRANSFER CASE-4- WHEEL DRIVE). THE MANUFACTURER CONFIRMED THAT PER THE RECALL, THEY WERE ONLY LIABLE FOR REFILLING THE TRANSFER CASE BUT NOT REPLACING IT. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE WAS AN AFTERMARKET PART AND NOT AN ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS PART. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WOULD NOT ASSUME LIABILITY FOR THE REPAIR AND HE LEFT THE VEHICLE IN THE DEALERS POSSESSION UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER AGREED TO REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE AT NO CHARGE. HE NOTICED OIL LEAKING ON THE GROUND WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE WAS LEAKING. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 02V143001 (POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE), HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY INSPECTED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 143,273 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 142,000.

I HAVE A 1993 MITSUBISHI 300 GT VR4. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE VEHICLE (PURCHASED 2001) THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE POWER TRAIN. AFTER BEING NOTIFIED I TOOK THE CAR TO BE SERVICE ON THE TRANSFER CASE AT CARMAX MITSUBISHI IN STERLING, VA. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR IT SEEMED TO BE WORKING PROPERLY BUT SHORTLY AFTER STARTED TO HAVE A PROBLEM AGAIN WITH THE TRANSFER GEARS IT WAS MAKING GRINDING NOISES WHILE SHIFTING FROM FIRST TO SECOND OR WHILE GOING IN REVERSE, ALSO THERE WAS A CLUNKING NOISE WHILE REVERSING, THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE REAR WHEELS HAS ALL THE SYMPTOMS THAT WERE THERE BEFORE IT WAS TAKEN TO BE SERVICE FOR THE RECALL. THE DEALER THAT SERVICED MY CAR AT THE TIME (7-25-03) ADDED A NOTE ON THE SERVICE SLIP STATING THAT THE TRANSFER CASE SPINDS WERE WORN OUT AND NEEDED IT TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER DEALER AND THEY SAID THE SAME BUT THEY COULD NOT HELP ME BECAUSE THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED ON MY CAR WHICH ONLY INCLUDED ADDING TRANSMISSION OIL TO THE CASE A $130.00 SERVICE. MY CAR HAS BEEN SITTING IN MY GARAGE FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS WITH ONLY 72,000. AS MANY OWNER'S MY OPINION THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT DESIGNED TO HANDLE THE HORSE POWER, AND IT IS A CORPORATE DECISION TO REPLACE RATHER THAN FIX THE ORIGINAL UNIT AT AN UNREASONABLE COST. MANY HAVE REPLACED TRANSMISSION UNITS MORE THAN ONCE WHICH GIVES A GOOD INDICATION OF THE INADEQUACY. HERE IS THE RECALL NUMBER. WHAT SHOULD I DO? MY CAR BEGAN TO BUCK VIOLENTLY ON THE WAY HOME THE REAR WHEELS LOCKED UP AND THE FRONT CONTINUED TO MOVE, WHICH CAUSED HEAVY VIBRATIONS. I TURNED THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON AND SLOWED DOWN TO A STOP. I THEN REMOVED THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION AND RESTED THE CAR WHERE IT STOPPED, 120 FT FROM MY HOUSE. IMMEDIATELY, I KNEW THE CULPRIT -- THE TRANSFER CASE, AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS AGO. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO DARCARS MITSUBISHI TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED. INITIALLY, SERVICE SUPPORT TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. A FEW DAYS PASSED, AND I RECIEVED A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAYING IT WAS NOT COVERED BECAUSE THE "FLUID PLUG WAS MISSING." THEY PROPOSED THE REMEDY OF REFILLING THE FLUIDS AND REPLACING THE PLUGS, SOMETHING THAT ALSO SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY THE RECALL -- AT THE CHARGE OF ABOUT $82. I RECIEVED THE CAR THE NEXT FRIDAY, AND THE CAR WORKED FINE... TEMPORARILY. THE VERY NEXT FRIDAY, THE CAR EXPERIENCED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS BEFORE. I PULLED OVER BY A NEARBY SHOPPING CENTER AND CALLED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. IT WAS TOWED TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AS BEFORE -- DARCARS MITSUBISHI. THE DEALERSHIP GAVE ME A RATHER LARGE LIST OF FAULTS -- MOST NOTABLY, AN INTERNALLY DAMAGED AND LEAKING TRANSFER CASE. I ONCE AGAIN FOUGHT FOR THE RECALL, BUT THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED. THE RECALL EXPLICITLY STATES TRANSFER CASE, YET THEY WERE ARGUING THAT IT WAS THE YOKE THAT IS COVERED -- WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE. I CALLED MITSUBISHI AMERICA AND THEY SAID THAT THE CAR HAS HAD ITS TRANSFER CASE REPLACED BEFORE -- IN 1999, 3 YEARS BEFORE THE TRANSFER CASER RECALL HAD BEEN INSSUED IN 2002. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED HOME AND HAS SAT SINCE. HAVE BEEN IN TOUCH WITH SEVERAL OTHER DEALERSHIPS WHO WERE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING, BECAUSE DARCARS SIGNED OFF AS COMPLETING THE RECALL ON MY CAR -- WHICH THEY DID NOT, AS I WAS CHARGED FOR THE ONLY WORK THAT WAS DONE ON MY CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP. *AK

REASON FOR STATING THERE WAS A WRECK, BUT WITH OUT INJURY IS: THE TRANSFER CASE LOCKED UP THE BACK END OF THE CAR CAUSING THE CAR TO START SPINNING. THOUGH AT THE TIME THE CAR WAS TRAVELING AT AROUND 60 MPH, IT OCCURED ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF HIGHWAY, AND NO OTHER CARS WERE INVOLVED. DRIVETRAIN ALSO HAS EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF SLOP IN IT AND COULD POTETIALLY FAIL WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION CAUSING SERIOUS RISK OF INJURY

WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THE CLUTCH NEEDED TO BE BLED (WRONG!). THE PROBLEM CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND EXTENDED TO OTHER GEARS. AS THE WEATHER GOT COLD IT INCREASINGLY GOT MORE DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO 1ST OR 2ND GEAR UNTIL AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN RUN FOR 10-15 MILES. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SYNCROS ARE BAD AND THAT THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION MUST BE REPLACED AGAIN! APPARENTLY, THIS TRANSMISSION (GETRAG) IS NOTORIOUS FOR THE SYNCROS GOING BAD AND THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT PROVIDE REPLACEMENT PARTS. DRIVING AT 65 MPH ON A TEXAS HIGHWAY, MY WHEELS SUDDENLY LOCKED UP AND THE CAR GROUND TO A HALT. AT THE TIME, I WAS BEING FOLLOWED BY A SEMI. FORTUNATLY, THERE WAS ROOM FOR THE TRUCK TO SQUEEZE BY. AFTER I PAID TO REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE, WITHIN A YEAR, IT FAILED AGAIN IN EXACTLY THE SAME FASHION. THIS TIME, MY SPEED WAS ONLY 40 MPH.

MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAS A PROBLEM, THE CAR IS STILL DRIVABLE, BUT EVERY TIME I PUSH MY CLUTCH, MY SHIFTER MOVES UP AND DOWN, FORWARD, OR BACKWARD AND SOMETIMES GOES OUT OF THE GEAR. I THOUGHT THAT IT COULD BE A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF MY MOUNTS GOING BAD, BUT A MECHANIC CHECKED THEM AND SAID THEY WERE OK. THEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE FAILURES OF TRANSMISSIONS BY OTHER CARS JUST LIKE MINE, SO IT'S PROBABLY A MANUFACTURER'S MISTAKE BECAUSE THERE ARE THE SO CALLED GETRAG 5 SPEED TRANSMISSIONS INSIDE MY CAR AND THEY ARE THE ONE'S SUPPOSEDLY TO GO BAD EASILY. A REPLACEMENT WOULD COST ME A LOT OF MONEY WHICH I CAN'T COME UP WITH THAT EASY. ALTHOUGH NO MAJOR COMPONENTS HAVE FAILED, THE SYNCHROS HAVE BEEN A CONTINUOUS PROBLEM WITH 3000GTS AND STEAL.THS AND TRANSMISSIONS ARE NOT SERVICABLE. MY 2ND AND 3RD SYNCHROS ARE VERY WORN AND ARE FAILING. I AM PREPARED FOR THE WORST TO COME AND WOULD BE GRATEFUL OF A RECALL BEFORE THE TRANNY IS COMPLETE TRASH AND THERE IS A WRECK. CAR SUFFERED SAME DEFECT AS REPORTED WITH THE MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE(AWD). REPLACED TRANSMISSION UNDER 30 DAY(ASSUMING USED AS DEALER WOULD NOT SAY). 9 MONTHS LATER THE TANSMISSION FAILED AS THE OUT PUT SHAFT TO TRANFER CASE STRIPPED FROM UNKNOWN REASONS. AFTER REPLACING THE DAMAGED PARTS TRANSMISSION FAILED AGAIN TWO WEEKS AFTER REPAIR. SEEMS THAT THE FLUID KEPT ESCAPING FROM THE TRANSFER CASE CAUSING A HOT BEARING TO FAIL. WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE CAR CAME TO A LOCKING STOP IN MILD TRAFFIC. THIS HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES BEFORE I DECIDED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER TRANSFER CASE. I HAVE BUT I HAVE HAD TO BRING IT TO THE SHOP EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS TO COMFIRM THAT THERE WAS NO FLUID LEAKING OUT. IN THE END SO FAR I HAVE SPEND ALMOST 6000 DOLLARS IN REPAIR OF THAT ONE PROBLEM. THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAD THE CAR, IT WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT 61,268 MILES. SINCE THEN I BOUGHT THE CAR USED AT ABOUT 72K MILES, AND AGAIN THE TRANSMITION IS FAILING. IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE SYNCROS ON THE TRANSMITION TO GO BAD , CAUSING GRINDING WHEN SHIFTING INTO SECOND GEAR. MITSUBISHI (OR ANYONE ELSE) OFFERS NO REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THIS TRANSMITION. THEY CONSIDER IT ONE PART, THE WHOLE GETRAG TRANSMISSION IS A $5000 REPLACEMENT PART. I CALLED MITSUBISHI AND THEY SAID THE 61,268 MILE REPLACEMENT WAS WARRANTIED FOR ONLY 12 MONTHS OR 12K MILES. I FEEL IT IS VERY WRONG THAT THEY PUT A TRANSMITION IN THE CAR THAT ONLY LAST ABOUT 15,000 MILES. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON ALL MITSUBISHI MANUAL TRANSMITIONS DUE TO EXCESSIVE FAILURE RATES. *AK

DEALER WILL NOT FIX ONLY REPLACE COMPONENTS AT THE COST OF $10,000. THIS PROBLEM EXISTS FOR MANY 3000GT OWNERS. IT IS MANY OWNERS' OPNION THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT DESIGNED TO HANDLE THE HORSEPOWER, AND IT IS A CORPORATE DECISION TO REPLACE RATHER THAN FIX THE ORIGINAL UNIT AT AN UNREASONABLE COST. MANY HAVE REPLACED TRANSMISSION UNITS MORE THAN ONCE WHICH GIVES A GOOD INDICATION OF THE INADEQUACY. *AK
