WHEN I LIFT MY CAR (NISSAN ALTIMA 2006 ) AT THE MECHANIC TO DO REPAIR JOB , I DISCOVERED A HUGE RUST HOLE AT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SITE AT THE FRONT OF THE CAR , I SHOCKED , IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN , FOR ME AND FOR MY FAMILY . THE RUST IS DEEP , WIDE AND PENETRATING , MY MECHANIC ADVICE ME TO SELL IT OF ANY PRICE BUT I DONT WANT TO SELL IT FOR ANY ONE , BECAUSE I HAVE A FAITHFUL CONSCIOUS , AND MORALS , I BEILEVE IN KARMA , I WOULD NOT DO IT FOR ANY BODY , EVEN THE CAR HAS ONLY 71,600 MILES , I DONT DRIVE IT ALOT , BUT FROM NOW ON , I AM NOT WILLING TO DRIVE IT AT ALL , OR LET MT DAUGHTERS GET IN THIS CAR FOR A VERY SERIOUS SAFTY CONCERNS , A HUGE RUST IN THE FLOOR .

BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON 9/19/2018. PRIOR TO COMPLETING THE SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS RUSTING UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SIDE. I COULDN'T PICTURE WHAT THEY WERE DESCRIBING SO I ASKED TO SEE AND I TOOK A PICTURE. SUBSEQUENTLY, I WAS INFORMED BY SOMEONE ELSE (NOT NISSAN) THAT THIS HAS BEEN A LONG STANDING ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE, MODEL & YEAR (2006). IT POTENTIALLY COULD AFFECT MY SUSPENSION/STEERING AND ALSO CAUSE A PASSENGER TO FALL THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE. I FOUND OUT THAT THEY EVEN SENT OUT A 13 PAGE ILLUSTRATED BULLETIN TITLED "FLOOR PANEL REPAIR" ON 7/6/2015 TO THE DEALERS ABOUT A KIT THEY DEVELOPED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM; YET, THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL. JUST TODAY, 12/11/19, I INCIDENTALLY FOUND OUT MY PARTICULAR DEALERSHIP HAS HAD NUMEROUS CASES FOR THE NISSAN PATHFINDER. UNSURE OF WHAT YEAR(S) BUT IT WAS A HUGE ISSUE AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A RECALL IN THOSE INSTANCES. THERE IS A HISTORY OF THIS WITH ALTIMAS 2002-2006 & MAXIMAS 2004-2008. I'VE ATTACHED A COPY OF THE BULLETIN. BUT WHAT MADE MATTERS WORSE WAS BETWEEN 1/9/19-3/20/19 THERE WERE A NUMBER OF SEVERE POTHOLES ON NJ 95 SOUTH OF WHICH KNOCKED MY SUSPENSION/STEERING OFF. (55-60MPH). IT FELT LIKE ALL OF THE WHEELS WERE COMING OFF. THIS ADDS TO THE RISK THE ERRODING PANEL LEADING TO THE AXLES, OTHER SUSPENSION, ETC. POSES & COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING.

I TOOK MY 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA TO THE SHOP TO PURCHASE TIRES AND UPON PUTTING THE VEHICLE ON A LIFT, THE MECHANIC CALLED ME BACK TO SHOW ME A GAPING HOLE ON BOTH THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE CARPET WERE LIFTED, YOU COULD SEE THROUGH TO THE ROAD ON BOTH SIDES. BOTH FLOORBOARD PANELS WERE RUSTED INCREDIBLY BADLY. AT ANY TIME MY DOG OR GRANDCHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. I AM UNAWARE OF HOW LONG THE HOLES HAVE BEEN THERE BUT JUDGING FROM THE SEVERITY OF THE RUST, I WOULD SAY IT HAS BEEN 5+ YEARS SINCE THEY STARTED RUSTING. IT WAS HUGE GAPING HOLES, SO MUCH SO THAT I BOUGHT A NEW CAR.

PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR BOARD RUSTED THROUGH. DRIVER SIDE SEEMS OK (FOR NOW) MAYBE BECAUSE I ALWAYS DO UNDER-WASH EVERY TIME WASHING THE CAR. FIRST NOTICED THE RUSTING AFTER AROUND 4 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP WHEN DID A DIY OIL CHANGE BUT I JUST IGNORED IT BECAUSE I JUST THOUGHT I'M JUST ONE OF THE UNLUCKY OWNER UNTIL DID A DIY OIL CHANGE LAST MONTH AND MY SURPRISED THE RUST GOTTEN WORST AND WIDENED. BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW IN JUNE, 2006 AND WAS GARAGE KEPT SINCE DAY ONE. IT ALSO GET WASHED REGULARLY BY ME AND AUTO CARWASH IN THE WINTER OF COURSE WITH UNDER CARRIAGE WASH. THE CAR HAS NOW 110K MILES.
I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED TO FIND HOLES RUSTED THROUGH THE FLOORS OF OUR CAR. AS I RESEARCHED I HAVE FOUND THIS A HUGE PROBLEM, EVEN COVERED BY MAJOR TV NETWORKS. ...I REACHED OUT TO NISSAN AND THEY SAID THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING.

THE FLOOR PANELS HAVE COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. APPARENTLY THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR AND MODEL OF ALTIMAS
THE FLOOR PANS OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER FRONTS HAVE BEEN RUSTING ON MY NISSAN ALTIMA FOR YEARS. I CAN NOT REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST NOTICED IT BUT IT WOULD BE ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO EASILY. ALSO THE EXTERIOR PAINT ON MY CAR HAS PREMATURELY DEGRADED TO THE POINT WHERE I ALMOST HAVE NO CLEAR COAT LEFT ON MY CAR. THE MAIN ISSUE IS THE RUST. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR RUST IN A FLAT PART UNDER NEATH A CAR WHERE WATER SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SIT. I WILL BE ATTACHING PICTURES THAT SHOW THE EXTENT OF THE ISSUE. I HAVE ALSO COME ACROSS NUMEROUS CHAT PAGES THAT HAVE THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENING TO THEIR CARS AS WELL. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY HAZARD THAT CAN NOT POSSIBLY BE MEETING THE MINIMUM SAFETY STANDARDS. I DO LIVE IN A COLD WEATHER STATE NOW BUT THE RUSTING HAPPENED WHILE I WAS STILL LIVING IN SOUTH CAROLINA. THE FIXES FOR THIS ISSUE ARE EXPENSIVE AND SHOULD NOT BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONSUMER TO FIX WHEN IT IS A COMMON ISSUE FOR 2002-2006 ALTIMA SERIES. NOT ONLY DO THESE RUST SPOTS ALLOW FOR DEBRIS TO POSSIBLE COME INTO THE CABIN FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE BUT ALSO ALLOW FOR EXHAUST TO FILL THE CABIN. KOBE STEEL IS A KNOW SUPPLIER FOR NISSAN AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THEY SUPPLIED THE FLOOR PANELS FOR THESE YEAR OF ALTIMA'S SINCE THEY HAVE ADMITTED TO USING MATERIAL THAT IS NOT UP TO STANDARDS. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE FLOORBOARDS FIXED WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY OR SOMETHING TO MAKE THIS SITUATION RIGHT. MY CAR CURRENTLY WITH THE RUST AND PAINT ISSUES IS UN-SELLABLE AND HAS LOST 100% OF ITS VALUE. THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS COMPLAINT. WENT OUT TO MY CAR ( PARKED) AND NOTICED SOMETHING HANGING FROM UNDERNEATH DRIVERS SIDE. A LARGE MASS OF RUSTED FLOOR BOARD WAS HANGING TO THE GROUND. I TOUCHED IT AND IT FELL OFF, ABOUT A FOOT LONG AND JUST AS WIDE.LAID ON GROUND TO SEE UNDER CAR AND THE DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR BOARD IS RUSTED OUT.HAS BEEN FOR REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND THE MECHANIC HAS NOT MENTIONED THIS.I DISCUSSED WITH MECHANIC AND HE NOTIFIED ME THAT HE HAS SEEN THIS BEFORE AND I SHOULDN'T ALLOW MY TEEN DAUGHTER TO DRIVE HER CAR BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE.I THEN CHECKED ON THE INTERNET TO FIND OUT THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING ALL NISSAN ALTIMA'S FROM 2002-2006. YET, NISSAN HAS NOT TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS IN A RECALL . IS NISSAN WAITING FOR MY DAUGHTERS FOOT TO GO THROUGH THE FLOOR AND CRASH AND DIE BEFORE THEY DO THE RIGHT THING. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE. SOMEONE NEEDS TO STEP IN OR STEP UP TO RESOLVE THIS BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. SO THE CAR REMAINS PARKED.QUESTION 'WOULD THEY LET THERE TEEN DRIVE THIS CAR "? REMEMBER THE DRIVERS SEAT IS ALSO ATTACHED TO THIS AREA WILL IT STAND UP TO A CRASH OR GIVE WAY THROWING DRIVER THROUGH FRONT WINDOW ? TAKING PICTURES OF DAMAGE TO DOCUMENT. THANKS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED, THE MECHANIC NOTICED A PIECE OF METAL HANGING UNDERNEATH THE FLOORBOARD. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, A HOLE WAS LOCATED ON THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FLOORBOARDS. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000.

I HAPPENED TO LOOK UNDER VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT MY DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR BOARD IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW AND I HAVE SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS WITH THIS. A WHOLE NEW FLOOR PAN WILL BE NEEDED TO HOPEFULLY FIX THIS. HAD I NOT SEEN THIS, I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. I DO NOT KNOW WHEN THIS STARTED TO CORRODE, ONLY WHEN I NOTICED IT WHICH WAS TODAY 10/15/2017.
AFTER A ROUTINE SERVICE CALL FOR OIL CHANGE, ROTATE AND CHECK TIRES, ETC., I WAS ADVISED BY THE MECHANIC BOTH FLOOR BOARDS WERE IN NEED OF REPAIR. HIS ADVISE WAS TO DRIVE CAREFULLY AND NOT GO OVER BIG BUMPS. I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND IMMEDIATELY THE OWNER KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. HE THE OWNER HAD ALREADY FIXED AT LEAST 4 ALTIMAS SAME YEAR. HE SAID THE STEEL WAS THIN AND RUSTED QUICK. MY CAR WAS ALMOST ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE FLOORS. STEEL IS, IN FACT MADE MUCH BETTER AND VERY LITTLE RUST SHOWS ON CARS. MINE CAR HAS NO RUST (EXCEPT FLOOR BOARDS IN FRONT) IT HAS BEEN FIXED $500.

ON MY 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA, THERE HAS BEEN HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE RUST PROBLEM ON THE FRONT FLOORBOARDS. I HAVE A 16" BY 8" HOLE ON MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE FLOORBOARD THAT I PUT MY FOOT INSIDE WHEN I WAS GETTING INSIDE MY CAR AND SLIGHTLY INJURED MY FOOT. THE ONLY THING HOLDING THIS HOLE IS THE CARPET THAT IS COVERING THE RUSTED OUT FLOOR PANEL. THIS IS A SUPER BIG SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED ON ALL NISSAN VEHICLES BEFORE ANY OTHER INJURIES OR COMPLAINTS TAKE PLACE. NISSAN WANTED TO CHARGE ME A $125 DIAGNOSIS FEE FOR SOMETHING YOU CAN PHYSICALLY SEE WITH YOUR OWN EYES.

THERE ARE NO OTHER INDICATIONS OF RUST ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, OR ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE UNDER-BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ISSUE FIRST STARTED SHOWING SYMPTOMS IN ~2011 WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND HAS CONTINUED TO WORSEN TO THE POINT WHERE IT'S DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE.

EXTREME RUST OF FLOORBOARDS. ON BOTH PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE OF VEHICLE, A 12"X24" AREA OF THE FLOORS ARE COMPLETELY GONE, WITH ONLY THE VEHICLE CARPET REMAINING. THIS IS MAJOR, WIDESPREAD SAFETY HAZARD ACROSS THE NISSAN PRODUCT LINE IN EARLY 2000S MODEL YEAR VEHICLES AND HAS BEEN WIDELY REPORTED ONLINE, IN PRINT, AND ON TV. IT'S A TRAVESTY THAT NHTSA HAS FAILED TO GIVE THIS ISSUE THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES AND FORCE NISSAN TO DO THE RIGHT THING IN ISSUING A RECALL. SO MANY OF THESE VEHICLES ARE STILL ON THE ROAD! THERE IS NO RUST ANYWHERE ELSE ON OUR VEHICLE; CLEARLY THIS IS A MANUFACTURING OR DESIGN FLAW. WE NOTICED THE RUST FOR THE FIRST TIME SEVERAL MONTHS AGO WHEN WE WERE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE.

RUST FLOOR, HOLES.
EXTREME RUST AND CORROSION OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR PANEL AND FRAME. RUSTED AREA IS ABOUT 3' X 1'. RUST HAS EXPOSED THE INSULATION UNDER THE CARPET; THERE IS NO METAL REMAINING IN A 4" X 6" AREA. METAL AROUND THIS IS VERY THIN. I AM CONCERNED THAT TOO MUCH PRESSURE FROM MY FOOT WILL CAUSE LARGER AREA TO COLLAPSE. ESTIMATE TO REPAIR AT A BODY SHOP IS ABOUT $1,400. I HAVE DRIVEN MANY CARS LONGER THAN THIS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A FRAME OR UNDERSIDE RUST LIKE THIS. IT IS SURELY A DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING AND A POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUE IF MY FEET GO THROUGH THE HOLE OR A PIECE OF ROAD DEBRIS PENETRATES THE CARPET.
IT HAS RECENTLY COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE FLOOR PANS OF MY CAR HAVE RUSTED THROUGH TO THE POINT WHERE MY FOOT COULD GO THROUGH THE FLOOR PAN. AFTER TAKING MY CAR TO GET A SAFETY INSPECTION IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, MY CAR HAS FAILED INSPECTION AND CANNOT PASS UNTIL THESE HAZARDOUS HOLES ARE FIXED ON BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE DUE TO THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED IN REGARDS TO THIS MATTER. OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES SHOULD NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE OF THIS ISSUE. AGAIN, THIS IS A REOCCURRING ISSUE AMONG NISSAN ALTIMAS, SPECIFICALLY THE YEARS 2002-2006. I AM NOW REQUIRED TO PAY AT LEAST $500 TO REPAIR AN ISSUE THAT IS OUT OF MY CONTROL. THERE IS NO WAY THAT I CAN STOP RUST FROM OCCURRING. THESE CARS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BE DRIVEN BECAUSE EXHAUST FUMES CAN ENTER THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS A FOOT GOING THROUGH THE HOLES. IT IS UNETHICAL OF NISSAN TO ALLOW THESE VEHICLES TO STILL BE DRIVEN KNOWING THAT THIS IS A REOCCURRING ISSUE.
THE FLOORBOARDS ARE RUSTED OUT BELOW THE FRONT DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER FEET. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE I'LL HAVE TWO LARGE HOLES. SURFACE RUST OR WHEEL ARCH RUST IS ONE THING, BUT STRUCTURAL ROTTING FOR A CAR THAT'S 10 YEARS OLD IS EXCESSIVE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE WHEELS WAS POINTED INWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS CRACKED, CORRODED, AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 06V046000 (SUSPENSION). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
THE FLOOR BOARDS UNDER THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS ARE PREMATURELY ROTTING. EACH SIDE HAS A HUGE HOLE APPROXIMATELY 5 INCHES ACROSS AND 8-12 INCHES LONG AND THE HOLES CONTINUES TO ENLARGE. THIS PARTICULAR COMPLAINT HAS BEEN MADE BY HUNDREDS OF TIMES BY OTHERS. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NISSAN SHOULD DO SOMETHING TO REPAIR THE VEHICLES! DATE LISTED BELOW IS WHEN I FIRST DISCOVERED IT AFTER A MECHANIC BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION WHILE THE CAR WAS UP ON A LIFT.
DURING A RECENT OIL CHANGE, MY MECHANIC BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE FRONT SEAT FLOOR BOARDS WERE RUSTING ON BOTH THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGER SIDES. THE RUSTING AREAS LOOK ALMOST IDENTICAL. I RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET TO FIND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2002-2006 NISSAN ALTIMAS. THERE APPARENTLY HAVE BEEN A FEW CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS FILED AND SEVERAL TELEVISION REPORTS ON THE MATTER. I HAVE CALLED NISSAN; HOWEVER, THEY CLAIM IT IS NOT A DEFECT. I DISCUSSED WITH A NEIGHBOR RECENTLY WHO ALSO OWNS A NISSAN ALTIMA BUILT IN THAT TIMEFRAME AND FOUND OUT THAT HE TOO RECENTLY DISCOVERED THE RUSTING FLOOR BOARD ISSUE. NISSAN TOLD ME THAT I LIVED IN A SALT STATE AND DID NOT KNOW HOW I MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE; HOWEVER, GIVEN THE HUNDREDS AND PROBABLY THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS FILED, IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS ISSUE TO BE DUE TO OWNER NEGLIGENCE. MY HOPE WAS THAT MY 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE THIS CAR ONCE SHE GETS HER LICENSE, BUT NOW I'M FACED WITH SPENDING THOUSANDS TO EITHER FIX THE ISSUE (WHICH MAY NOT BE FIXABLE GIVEN THAT RUST AREAS GROW) OR TO BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE IS CURRENTLY A HOLE THROUGH MY FLOOR BOARD AND IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN TO ME, ESPECIALLY IF MY DAUGHTER IS BEHIND THE WHEEL.

I HAVE OWNED A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS THAT HAS 126,000 MILES ON IT. DURING A RECENT INSPECTION THE MECHANIC FOUND SEVERE RUSTING AND A SIGNIFICANT HOLE IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR PAN; YOU COULD SEE THE INTERIOR CARPET FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR. IT LOOKS LIKE THE FLOOR HAS BEEN ERODING FOR QUITE SOME TIME. AFTER SEARCHING FOR THIS ISSUE ONLINE, I LEARNED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH NISSAN ALTIMAS FROM 2002 TO 2006 RELATING TO A FAULTY DESIGN IN A DRAIN (THOSE WERE A NISSAN REPS OWN WORDS). I'M FRUSTRATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR COMMUNICATIONS REGARDING THIS KNOWN ISSUE. I'D HOPE THAT NISSAN CAN BE COMPELLED TO BE TRANSPARENT AND FORTHCOMING WITH KNOWN ISSUES WHICH MAY BE A RISK TO CUSTOMERS' SAFETY.

I SAW SOME SORT OF PLASTIC HANGING FROM THE AREA AND WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR, THE FLOORBOARD IS COMPLETELY RUSTED. WHEN I EXAMINED THE AREA WITH MY HAND, I FELT THE CARPET AND AM ABLE TO PUSH IT UP INTO THE FLOOR OF THE CAR. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND DEFECT IN THE CAR. THIS HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN RUSTING FOR SOME TIME NOW AND I DID NOT KNOW MY DAUGHTER WAS SITTING OVER A GAPING WHOLE IN THE FLOOR AND IN DANGER FROM HER FEET FALLING THROUGH THE FLOOR OR SOMETHING POTENTIALLY PIERCING THROUGH AND INJURING HER.
WENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE/TIRE ROTATION AND MECHANIC SAID THAT BOTH DRIVER AND PASENGER SIDE FLOORBOARDS WERE ALMOST RUSTED THROUGH. CONTACTED NISSAN DEALER I PURCHASED CAR FROM, THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL BUT THAT NISSAN HAS ISSUED A "SERVICE BULLETIN" ON HOW TO REPAIR THE ISSUE. COST OF REPLACEMENT PARTS AND LABOR WAS IN EXCESS OF $3,000. DO NOT FEEL THAT A TEN YEAR OLD CAR SHOULD BE EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE. CAR HAS 170K MILES BUT OTHERWISE IS IN FLAWLESS CONDITION.

THE VEHICLE IS IN GREAT CONDITION OTHERWISE (NO VISIBLE RUST ON BODY PANELS) AND THE REST OF THE UNDERBODY IS IN GREAT CONDITION (MINIMAL CORROSION, AS EXPECTED FOR VEHICLE OF ITS AGE). PASSENGER SIDE FLOORBOARD IS NOTICEABLY SOFT ,AND RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH THE FLOOR PAN IN ONE SPOT (YOU CAN PUT A FINGER THROUGH IT IF CARPET IS REMOVED). THIS IS UNEXPECTED AS THE FLOOR PAN IS COATED WITH A RUBBERIZED UNDERBODY PROTECTANT IN THIS AREA. THE FLOOR PAN MUST BE REPLACED IN THIS AREA, BUT NISSAN ONLY SELLS THE ENTIRE FLOOR PAN FOR THE VEHICLE, WHICH IS QUITE COSTLY. I AM DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I HAVE NO EVIDENCE WHICH INDICATES THIS ISSUE IS CAUSED BY ANY DAMAGE OR NEGLECT, IT SEEMS AS IF THIS IS DUE TO A COATING FAILURE OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT.

EACH RUST HOLE IS APPROXIMATELY 12 INCHES LONG X 4 INCHES WIDE AND THE PADDING AN CARPET CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN FROM UNDERNEATH. EVEN AFTER EXHAUST IS FIXED I AM STILL AT GREAT RISK OF ROAD DEBRIS AND MOISTURE ENTERING THE CABIN FROM BENEATH THE CAR. THIS CAR IS JUST 10 YEARS OLD AND THE REST OF THE BODY IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH LITTLE TO NO RUST. I LIVE IN A SALT BELT STATE BUT OTHER CARS OF THE SAME AGE DON'T SEEM TO HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. I'VE LEARNED THROUGH MEDIA AND WEB THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2002 - 2006 NISSAN ALTIMAS. I NOTIFIED NISSAN AND THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR INTO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION, WHICH I DID ON 7/3/15. THEY TOOK PICTURES AND SENT THEM TO NISSAN CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS. AFTER SEVERAL EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS GOING BACK AND FORTH , THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A VEHICLE WITH SUCH LOW MILES HAVING THIS PROBLEM. IT IS INCREDIBLE THAT THE FLOOR PAN OF A FASTIDIOUSLY MAINTAINED, MODERN UNIBODY AUTOMOBILE WOULD RUST OUT ALMOST COMPLETELY WITHIN EIGHT YEARS. AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE 2006 ALTIMA. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE BUT THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF RECTIFYING IT. THE REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT THE RUST WAS DUE TO SALT APPLIED TO THE ROADWAYS IN CT, THEREFORE NISSAN WOULD NOT BE OFFERING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IN THE REPAIR OF MY CAR. SHE SUGGESTED THAT I PAY FOR THE REPAIR OUT OF POCKET AND WASH THE UNDERCARRIAGE REGULARLY. THE CAR IS WASHED OFTEN. PASSENGER SIDE WAS OK. SEEMS WATER CAN WORK INTO SOME UNDER-CAR SEAMS, GET TRAPPED, LAY, AND BEGIN TO RUST OVER TIME. DESPITE ARGUMENT THAT A RUSTED THROUGH FLOORBOARD CONSTITUTES A SAFETY ISSUE, NISSAN DECLINED TO PARTICIPATE IN $480 REPAIR CITING RUST WARRANTY LIMITED TO 5 YEARS, 60,000 MILES. IT WAS NOTED THAT LOCAL NISSAN DEALER WAS WELL FAMILIAR WITH THE REPAIR (THEIR QUOTE $637.81). REPAIR DOWN AT AN INFINITI CAR DEALER BODY SHOP FOR $480.03. AFTER A SERIES OF HARD RAINS AND WET DRIVING CONDITIONS, I NOTICED A WET, MUSTY SMELL IN THE CABIN INTERIOR. AFTER INSPECTING ALL DOOR AND WINDOW SEALS WITHOUT FINDING ANY LEAKS, I INSPECTED UNDERNEATH THE CAR AND NOTICED THAT THE FLOORPAN AREA BENEATH BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS WERE RUSTING THROUGH WITH OPEN HOLES IN BOTH AREAS. THIS IMMEDIATELY STRUCK ME AS A DEFECT AS THE VEHICLE IS OTHERWISE RUST-FREE. UPON RESEARCHING, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE WITH 01-06 NISSAN ALTIMAS. I CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE. HOWEVER, THEY NOTED THAT NISSAN HAS NOT TAKEN ACTION TO ADDRESS THIS DEFECT. THEY PROVIDED A ROUGH ESTIMATE FOR REPAIRS AS THEY HAVE REFERRED OTHER CUSTOMERS TO BODY SHOPS FOR REPAIR (~$500-600 PER SIDE). NOT ONLY IS THIS LIKELY TO DAMAGE THE INTERIOR, BUT IT WOULD SEEM TO BE A LIKELY SAFETY HAZARD WITH THE WEAKENED FLOORPAN. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE: MODERN VEHICLES OUGHT NOT TO ROT LIKE SO, AND SUCH A ROT EXPOSES THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER AT GREAT RISK WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE.
