The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the message "Passenger Air Bag Off" remained displayed even though there was a passenger seated in the front passenger's seat. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front passenger's seat occupant sensor unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V521000 (Air Bags, Electrical System). The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The driver side door airbag did not deploy after major side impact by a box truck that never engaged the braking system. The Altima under went a safety inspection approximately 30 days prior to the accident. There were no warning lights on the vehicle. The vehicle has been inspected by the NJ State Police, involved Insurance companies and outside engineers. The driver ,my son, of the Altima, was fatally injured due to head trauma. TAMARA INFLATORS- AIR BAG LIGHT IN DASH FLASHES CONTINUOUSLY
PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. SAW THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG "OFF" INDICATOR LIGHT STAYED ON WHEN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED ALONG WITH THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT BLINKING IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL (ALL THE TIME). UPON INVESTIGATING THE ISSUE, I FOUND THAT THE "VARISTOR" IN THE OCS CONTROL UNIT (OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM) IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WAS BAD. THIS VARSITOR IS THE SWITCH THAT ENGAGES THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG WHEN THE SEAT IS OCCUPIED. THIS WAS RECALLED FOR 2007 NISSAN ALTIMAS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V521000. I CONTACTED NISSAN NORTH AMERICA ABOUT THE ISSUE AND WAS TOLD MY CAR (BY VIN) WAS NOT AFFECTED. WHEN I QUESTIONED WHY I WAS HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS THE RECALL, I WAS TOLD THAT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE FOR MY REGION WOULD CALL ME. WHEN I WAS CONTACTED, I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS ALREADY CHECKED AND THAT THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM. WHEN I ASKED HOW MY CAR WAS CHECKED WHEN I WAS TOLD IT WASN'T AFFECTED, I WAS TOLD I COULD TAKE IT TO ANY DEALER AND THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE/REPAIR THE ISSUE. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THE RECALL AND THE COST FOR REPAIR THE REP. TOLD ME MY CAR WAS "X" MONTHS AND "X" MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. I EXPLAINED THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR A REQUIRED SAFETY DEVICE TO BE REPAIRED NOT A ALTERNATOR OR WATER PUMP. THE REPRESENTATIVE WAS VERY SMUG AND BASICALLY TOLD ME TOO BAD. I ASKED IF IT WOULD TAKE SOMEBODY BEING INJURED IN ONE OF THEIR CARS WITH THIS ISSUE FOR THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING BUT AGAIN WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT TO ANY DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. ALSO, THE LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD READS 'PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF 2 ' WHEN A ADULT IS SETTING IN PASSENGER SEAT AND WON'T GO OFF. I CONTACTED NISSAN CORP. AND THEY TOLD ME THIS WASN'T COVERED BY RECALL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY AND NISSAN NEEDS TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY. I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR RESPONSE IN THIS MATTER. ALTHOUGH NISSAN IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH A VARIETY OF ALTIMA MODEL YEARS THEY IGNORE MY SAFETY COMPLAINT. THE FACTORY SAYS SEE THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE. IF THE SERVICE DEPT VERIFIES THE PROBLEM HAVE THEM CONTACT US. THE SERVICE DEPT SAYS CALL THE FACTORY. SERVICE DEPT SAYS INSPECTION IS MY RESPONSIBILITY AND COULD COST $200 OR MORE. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION BUT I HAVE NOT MONITORED IT WHEN PARKED. CANNOT 100% SAY IT IS ONLY WHEN IN MOTION.

I HAVE A CRACK SEPARATING IN A PERFECT SEEM AROUND THE NISSAN SYMBOL ON THE STEERING WHEEL, WHERE AN AIRBAG WOULD DEPLOY- FROM THE FAR LEFT, ALL THE WAY TO THE FAR RIGHT. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY SPECIFIC INCIDENT THAT HAS CAUSED THIS TO OCCUR, THIS ISSUE WAS NOTICED BY MYSELF ON 11/17/14. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE TEMPE AUTONATION NISSAN 11/18/14 AT 3 PM TO MEET WITH THE SERVICE TEAM MEMBER, [XXX]. I WAS EXPLAINING THE CRACK AND SEPARATING OF THE MATERIALS TO [XXX] PRIOR TO HIM LOOKING AT MY CAR.AFTER SHOWING HIM THE WHEEL, I HAD STATED "I JUST DON'T FEEL LIKE THIS SITUATION LOOKS VERY SAFE AND IT'S DEFINITELY NOT COMFORTABLE", AND [XXX] REPLIED "YEAH", AGREEING WITH MY STATEMENT. THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5S. AS INDICATED BY THE SAFETY LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IN MY VEHICLE WILL TURN ON AND OFF REPEATEDLY WHEN I HAVE A PASSENGER SITTING IN THE SEAT. THIS IS DESPITE KNOWING THE PASSENGER WEIGHS FAR MORE (OVER 150 LBS) THAN THE SAFETY LIMITS FOR WHICH THE AIRBAG SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO TURN OFF. THE AIRBAG INDICATOR WILL LIGHT NOTIFYING US THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG HAS TURNED OFF AND WILL OFTEN REMAIN LIT FOR 20-30 MINUTES AT A TIME, BUT THE TIME WILL VARY. EXITED INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, TRAVELED UP RAMP, WAS UNABLE TO LIFT LEFT FOOT TO BRAKE (POSSIBLY CAUGHT UNDER PARKING BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH IS CLOSE TO THE BRAKE), TRAVELED THROUGH INTERSECTION AND HIT GUARD RAIL, CAUSING $8,800 DAMAGE TO MY 7-MO.-OLD LEASED 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE WHOLE FRONT END CRUMBLED. BECAUSE I WAS NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT, I WAS THROWN INTO THE WINDSHIELD, HITTING AND SMASHING THE REAR VIEW MIRROR AND CRACKING THE WINDSHIELD. INJURIES SUSTAINED WERE NOT SERIOUS, BUT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO INJURIES AT ALL IF THE AIR BAGS HAD DEPLOYED. NONE OF THEM DID. I AM NOW VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND ANY PASSENGERS I MIGHT HAVE IN MY CAR. THE DEALERS SERVICE CENTER SAID THAT THE IMPACT WAS TOO HIGH UP ON THE FRONT END TO TRIGGER THE SENSORS. IF MY VEHICLE HAD SLID UNDER THE REAR OF A TRUCK, I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IN SPITE OF BEING SURROUNDED WITH AIR BAGS. *TR
MY DAUGHTER WAS JUST RECENTLY KILLED ON 10/25/2007 DUE TO THE AIRBAG NOT DEPLOYING ON HER BRAND NEW 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA. SHE WAS HIT ON THE HIGHWAY, HIT THE MEDIAN HARD AND LOST BUMPER AND THEN T-BONED IN THE OPPOSITE LANES. HER AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED AND SHE DIED FROM A BROKEN NECK!!!! *TR
PURCHASED A 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5S. 1. FIRST PROBLEM STARTED WHEN I HEARD A LOUD RATTLING NOISE WHEN I START THE CAR (THIS WAS 2 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR). INCREASE RPM TO 1.5 RPM TO GET A LOUDER, CRISPER NOISE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE HEAT SHIELD WAS CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TOOK 2 WEEKS FOR THE DEALER TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NOISE WENT AWAY. 2. NOISE CAME BACK AGAIN 2 WEEKS LATER AFTER IT WAS FIXED. BROUGHT IT TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT TO GET DIFFERENT OPINION. FINDS OUT THE HEAT SHIELD WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. RESOLVED, AND LATER TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS NOISE. 3. HAD A 110LB PASSENGER ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND THE AIR BAG OFF LIGHT TURNED ON. HAVE YET TO GO TO THE DEALER TO SEE WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. 4. AFTER ALL THIS, I START THE CAR ON DECEMBER 10TH, 2008 AND DID NOT WARM UP CAR. WHEN STARTING TO ACCELERATE CAR ON STREET, CLICKING NOISES STARTED TO EMERGE. WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CLUTCH MOTOR OR THE BELT. NOISE STARTS DISAPPEARING WHEN THE CAR IS WARMED UP (AFTER 8 MINUTES) DECIDED TO TEST IT OUT BY WARMING UP THE CAR FIRST LATER IN THE DAY AFTER IT HAD COOLED DOWN, AND THEN DRIVING IT, CLICKING SOUND EMERGED AGAIN. BOUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND TOLD THEM TO MAKE SURE TO CHECK NOISE WHEN THE CAR IS COLD (GIVER OR TAKE 3 HOURS), THEY DID NOT LISTEN AND CHECKED IT WHEN WARM, WHEN THERE IS NO CLICKING OCCURS. DEEMED FINE. 5. BRAKE SQUEALS ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN USED. HAVE YET TO CHECK THIS ONE OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP. 6. ON A MORNING OF JAN. 2, 2008, I HAVE STARTED THE CAR ONLY TO NOTICE THAT THE AIR MODE HAS SWITCHED FROM DEFROST/FOOT AIR MODE TO FOOT MODE. I THOUGHT THE AIR CONTROL UNIT WAS SUPPOSED TO MEMORIZE THE LAST TIME I HAD THE MODE ON BUT ONCE EVERY OFTEN, IT SWITCHES BACK TO THE FOOT AIR MODE PLUS TURNING ON THE A/C EVERY TIME THE CAR STARTS. AFTER BEING INVOLVED IN A 3-CAR ACCIDENT ON THE NJ TURNPIKE AT 3:15P.M. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, EVERYONE WAS WEARING SEAT BELTS, YET NO ONE WAS HURT, NOT EVEN A WHIP LASH. THE LEFT SIDE SUSTAINED HEADLIGHT AND HOOD DAMAGE, DRIVERS DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN AND IT APPEARED THAT THE RADIATOR WAS BUSTED SINCE LIQUID WAS POURING OUT. WE WERE TOWED TO THE NEAREST COLLISION PLACE AND GEICO TOWED IT FROM THERE TO ITS OWN SHOP. SINCE THE CAR WAS SO NEW, GEICO HAD SOME DIFFICULTY IN OBTAINING PART NUMBERS AND COST. THE NEXT CALL FROM GEICO WAS TO TELL US THAT THE CAR WAS TOTALED. THE BATTERY EXPLODED. BATTERY ACID EATING MOST OF THE COMPONENTS UNDER THE HOOD. QUESTION WHICH WAS DEFECTIVE.. WITHIN A WEEK OF PURCHASING THE CAR I NOTICED THAT THE LIGHT INDICATING THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WAS OFF WOULD ILLUMINATED WHEN THE 180 LB HUSBAND WOULD SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT PROPERLY RESTRAINED. THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR RESET THE COMPUTER, BUT THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. AT THIS TIME, I HAD A 55 LB CHILD SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND BUCKLE UP THE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON. AS I UNDERSTOOD , IT WAS DESIGNED TO COME ON IN THIS SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP HAS SINCE PUT A SEAT FROM A NEW VEHICLE . NISSAN WAS IN NO HURRY TO SHIP THE DEALER A NEW SEAT INTO THE CAR, BUT THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. NOW, WHEN I HAVE ARTICLES THAT WERE SOMEWHAT HEAVY , 20-30 LB, ) IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WITHOUT THE SEAT BELT BUCKLED THE LIGHT WILL COME ON, GO OFF, AND COME BACK ON AGAIN MULTIPLE TIMES AT ODD INTERVALS.
