I drove my car to work that morning and it was running completely fine. When I went to lunch that same day after 5 mins of driving the car my CVT transmission slipped out of nowhere and lost all power completely while I was on a busy road with lots of traffic almost causing multiple accidents because it happened out of no where and I was unable to get my car off of the road due to having no power. The car gave me no warning signs that anything was wrong until it wouldnt move anymore.

The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the ABS and TPMS warning lights illuminated and the vehicle started to stall. The contact saw smoke coming out from underneath the hood. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. An independent mechanic towed the vehicle to the contact’s residence. The independent mechanic then diagnosed that the transmission fluid and engine coolant were leaking over the engine compartment. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 07V267000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that upon attempting to start the vehicle, the brakes seized. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 232,740.

The Altima has 170k miles. We’ll taken care off . I was driving to work and out off nowhere the car lost power the speedometer stopped working and wouldn’t show me how fast I was going and I had to stopped and it lost all power. I tried looking everywhere for the problem to fix it and they told me they couldn’t get the part and told to come here and hopefully this helps, at the moment I dint have enough money to buy a car. The car has not been inspected but but the cops Or insurance. There were no warning prior to this accident it happened outta no where .

The Transmission failed at 51,000 miles. It has not come to a grinding halt yet but poses a safety hazard on any long trips. It was only a strange noise that varied with the acceleration that tipped us off that there might be a problem. The car is 14 years old now but my wife put very few miles on it and it still should be working. Regularly maintained by my local Nissan dealer for the lifespan of the car. Having now seen many other notices on Nissan transmissions for this and other model years you think Nissan would have recalled the cars and addressed the problem. I am very disappointed with Nissan and will buy another brand for my wife's next car.

RE: 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA - CVT TRANSMISSION: I WAS ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE AND MORE THAN HALFWAY TO MY DESTINATION, AS I INCREASED ACCELERATION FROM 55 TO 65 MPH, THE ENGINE BEGAN STRAINING AND THE TACHOMETER INCREASED TO 3500 RPMS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT AUTO SHIFT. I BACKED OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND MAINTAINED A SPEED OF 55 MPH. EVENTUALLY, I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION. ON MY RETURN TRIP, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN, THIS TIME ONLY WORSE. AGAIN, I DIDN'T PUSH THE VEHICLE TO HIGH SPEEDS. BY THE TIME I EXITED THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE, I COULD NOT ACCELERATE THE CAR BEYOND 45-50 MPH WITHOUT THE TACHOMETER ONCE AGAIN CLIMBING TO ALARMINGLY HIGH LEVELS. THE ENGINE WHINED AS IF IT WERE STRAINING MIGHTILY TO SHIFT INTO THE PROPER HIGH GEAR. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE CAR TO MY QUALIFIED MECHANIC WHO RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. SEVERAL CODES INDICATED TRANSMISSION FAILURE. MY NISSAN HAS THE CVT TRANSMISSION WHICH I NOW UNDERSTAND IS DEEPLY FLAWED TRANSMISSION. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION UNTIL I DID EXTENSIVE RESEARCH OF MY OWN AND LEARNED THAT MANY NISSAN OWNERS HAD EXPERIENCED SITUATIONS IDENTICAL TO MINE. I CALLED NISSAN AND A CASE WAS CREATED (#34468600). I WAS INFORMED THAT NISSAN HAS COMPLETELY ABSOLVED ITSELF OF ALL RESPONSIBILITY SINCE MY VEHICLE HAS 153K MILES ON THE ODOMETER. AT NO TIME SINCE I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE HAVE I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FROM NISSAN INDICATING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. WE MANAGED TO GET OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO TRY TO RESTART AND TAKE OFF AGAIN .WE NEVER KNOW WHEN THIS CAN OR WILL HAPPEN. I HAVE READ SEVERAL PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THIS SAME ISSUE. I HAD MY VEHICLE MAINTAINED AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM SINCE I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR AND WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE CVT TRANSMISSION ISSUES. OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS I TOLD THEM THAT THE VEHICLE WHINED WHEN I ACCELERATED ON THE HIGHWAY BUT THEY NEVER RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION UNDER THE 10 YR OR 120,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE TRANSMISSION JUST FAILED AT 136,000 MILES AND THE MANUFACTURER SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY.

SERIOUSLY!!! YOU ALLOW THEM TO BUILD JUNK AND THEY KNOW IT AND THEY ONLY USE 10 YEARS OR 120K WARRANTY. I AM A VICTIM WITH 79K. NISSAN NEEDS TO STAND BY THERE PRODUCT? I ASK YOU THIS ONE QUESTION. I'VE TALKED TO SEVERAL ALTIMA OWNERS AND THEY'VE HAD VERY SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH CVTS FAILING BETWEEN 125K AND 140K MILES, JUST PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD. THE FAILURE IS BIG, AND NISSAN SAYS THE ONLY OPTION IS COMPLETE REPLACEMENT - NO WAY TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE.

IT SEEMS LIKE THE CVT STAYS IN WHATEVER HIGH GEAR IT WAS WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES. I BELIEVE THIS CONSTITUTES A CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS NOW ESSENTIALLY BLOCKING TRAFFIC, THE DRIVER IS UNABLE TO GET OUT OF HARMS WAY/MOVING TRAFFIC. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS TWICE NOW, BOTH WITHIN CITY LIMITS <=45 MPH. THE ONLY WAY I AM ABLE TO GET THE CAR MOVING AGAIN IS TO STOP/START THE ENGINE OR PUT TRANSMISSION IN PARK (P) THEN DRIVE (D) TO GET THE CVT TO "RESET". SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL (N) THEN DRIVE (D) DOES NOT HELP. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS TO THE DEALER'S ATTENTION AND THEY SAY THERE ARE NO RECALLS AND NO ERROR CODES REPORTED VIA OBDII.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED WITH AN (NISSAN CERTIFIED) EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MILES IN 2010. I HAVE HAD THE AUTOMATIC CVT TRANSMISSION REPLACED (UNDER WARRANTY---CVT REPLACED WITH NEW TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY) ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS BETWEEN 2011 AND 2013. IN EARLY 2013, ROSS NISSAN CLAIMED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND DID NOT REPLACE IT, ONE MONTH LATER I TOOK IT TOO VALLEY HI NISSAN IN VICTORVILLE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY ROSS. THE PROBLEM IS AS FOLLOWS: THE CAR WHEN DRIVEN OVER LONG PERIODS OF TIME IN TRAFFIC (1 HOUR OR MORE), THE TRANSMISSION BEGINS TO WHINE,ESPECIALLY WHEN CLIMBING UP HILLS. ON OVER FIVE OCCASIONS THE CAR SPEED TOPPED OUT AT ABOUT 45-55 MPH ON THE FREEWAY AND COULD NOT GO FASTER ON STEEP INCLINES. I WOULD HAVE TO PULL THE CAR OVER TO THE SLOW LANE AS IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST THE 45-55 MPH UNTIL THE INCLINE IN THE FREEWAY LEVELED OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND EACH TIME IT HAS HAPPENED, THE NISSAN DEALER WOULD EVALUATE IT AND STATE THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAULTY. THE TRANSMISSION WERE REPLACED APPROXIMATELY AROUND 45K, 77K, 109K, IN DOING THE RESEARCH THE FOLLOWING BULLETINS SEEM TO MATCH THE PROBLEM THAT I'VE BEEN HAVING NTB-13-079 AND NTB-12-057 AND THE ONE MENTIONED BY THE DEALER WHICH I COULDN'T FIND ON THIS WEBSITE TSB-NTB10-143A. THEY ALL SEEM TO INDICATE A PROBLEM WITH THE FAIL SAFE FOR THE CVT TRANSMISSION FLUID PROTECTOR. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY NISSAN WILL NOT REPLACE THIS ISSUE AS IT HAS HAPPENED ON SO MANY CARS. I BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW WHEN IT WAS RELEASED IN LATE DECEMBER 2006, ALMOST 2 YEARS LATER, I HAD INFORMED MY TECH WHEN I WOULD BRING MY CAR IN FOR SCHEDULED OIL CHANGES THAT I HEAR A SLIGHT NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE CAR AND SOMETIMES A VIBRATION, OVER THESE NEXT FEW MONTHS AND YEAS I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT WAS EITHER A BEND IN MY RIM, NEEDING NEW TIRES, TO HAVING EXHAUST LEAKS OR ALIGNMENT NEEDED. SO I WOULD TAKE IT TO ANOTHER SHOP AND THEY WOULD TELL ME DIFFERENT OR IF THEY CONFIRMED I WOULD GET THE SERVICE DONE AT A LICENSED MECHANIC. OVER TIME THE NOISE GREW LOUDER AND LOUDER AND DISMISSED EACH TIME I BOUGHT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. UNTIL RECENTLY I FIGURED OUT THAT THE NOISE WOULD ONLY BE HEARD AND PRESENT AFTER HIGHWAY DRIVING FOR 45MIN OR MORE. SO I REPRODUCED THE CONDITIONS BEFORE I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS THEN THE ADVISED ME THAT THERE WAS SEVER RUST TAKING PLACE INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION. THE TECH PRECEDED TO TELL ME THAT MAY HAVE STARTED WHEN MY CAR WAS IN AN ACCIDENT 3 YEARS AGO IN 2008. I CONTACTED THE BODYSHOP THAT DID THE REPAIRS THE PROVIDED PAPERWORK PROVING THAT MY TRANSMISSION WAS NEVER EFFECTED OR TOUCHED AS PART OF THE ACCIDENT. THE TRANSMISSION IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND I EVEN HAVE PAPERWORK FROM THE SAME NISSAN DEALERSHIP THAT SHOWS THAT NISSAN DID A MULTIPOINT INSPECTION WHERE THEY INSPECTED THE TRANSMISSION AND ITS FLUID JUST 8 MONTHS PRIOR AND FOUND IT TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION N NO PRESENCE OF RUST OR FLUID ISSUES. AFTER REPEATEDLY RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR THE SAME UNDER WARRANTY REPAIR, THE SAME PROBLEM PERSISTS TO DATE! DESPITE THE DEALERSHIPS CLAIM OF CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER AND TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT, PRESSURE PLATE AND DISC REPLACEMENT, I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THAT THIS PROBLEM WILL CEASE TO OCCUR, AS IT IS IDIOPATHIC AND THE RE-OCCURRENCE IS UNPREDICTABLE. I OWNED A 2007 ALTIMA AT THE TIME. THE PROBLEM OCCURS AT SPEEDS OVER 45 MPH. IF EMERGENCY BRAKES ARE SLAMMED AND LOCKUP UNTIL VEHICLE COMES TO COMPLETE STOP THE THROTTLE BECOMES TOTALLY UNRESPONSIVE FOR UP TO 1 MINUTE. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP. DUPLICATED THE ISSUE FOR THEIR CONFIRMATION AND LEFT CAR FOR EXAMINATION. ACCORDING TO SERVICE REP "IT IS TO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE CAR IN THIS CONDITION\". A FEW HOURS LATER GOT A CALL FROM DEALER WITH THE FOLLOWING EXPLANATION. THEY TESTED THIS ISSUE AND WERE ABLE TO REPEAT IT ON 3 IDENTICAL CARS. APPARENTLY MANUFACTURER TOLD THEM THAT THIS IS AN EXPECTED BEHAVIOR TO PROTECT CERTAIN COMPONENTS OF A CAR TRANSMISSION. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH NISSAN USA AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT A DEFECT BUT A DESIGN TO PROTECT TRANSMISSION. I HAVE TAKEN SEVERAL OTHER ALTIMAS FOR TEST DRIVE AND SPOKE TO A NUMBER OF PEOPLE. APPARENTLY THIS ISSUE AFFECTS ALL ALTIMAS EQUIPPED WITH CVT BUT NOT WITH ABS. I BELIEVE THAT ABS ALLOWS TRANSMISSION TO ROTATE THUS CORRECTING THE ISSUE. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED NOT BEEN ABLE TO MOVE A CAR FOR UP TO A MINUTE AFTER AN EMERGENCY BRAKING COULD BE MORE DANGEROUS THEN THE EMERGENCY ITSELF. AT AROUND 60,000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON (8/31/09) SO I TOOK IT TO DO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY RECEIVED TRANSMISSION CODES. NISSAN HEADQUARTERS GOT INVOLVED AND DETERMINED ANOTHER TRANSMISSION WAS NEEDED. THIS WILL BE MY THIRD TRANSMISSION ON A CAR THAT IS A LITTLE OVER 2 YEARS OLD AND HAS ONLY 60,000 MILES ON IT. PURCHASED A 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5S. 1. FIRST PROBLEM STARTED WHEN I HEARD A LOUD RATTLING NOISE WHEN I START THE CAR (THIS WAS 2 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR). INCREASE RPM TO 1.5 RPM TO GET A LOUDER, CRISPER NOISE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE HEAT SHIELD WAS CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TOOK 2 WEEKS FOR THE DEALER TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NOISE WENT AWAY. 2. NOISE CAME BACK AGAIN 2 WEEKS LATER AFTER IT WAS FIXED. BROUGHT IT TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT TO GET DIFFERENT OPINION. FINDS OUT THE HEAT SHIELD WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. RESOLVED, AND LATER TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS NOISE. 3. HAD A 110LB PASSENGER ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND THE AIR BAG OFF LIGHT TURNED ON. HAVE YET TO GO TO THE DEALER TO SEE WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. 4. AFTER ALL THIS, I START THE CAR ON DECEMBER 10TH, 2008 AND DID NOT WARM UP CAR. WHEN STARTING TO ACCELERATE CAR ON STREET, CLICKING NOISES STARTED TO EMERGE. WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CLUTCH MOTOR OR THE BELT. NOISE STARTS DISAPPEARING WHEN THE CAR IS WARMED UP (AFTER 8 MINUTES) DECIDED TO TEST IT OUT BY WARMING UP THE CAR FIRST LATER IN THE DAY AFTER IT HAD COOLED DOWN, AND THEN DRIVING IT, CLICKING SOUND EMERGED AGAIN. BOUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND TOLD THEM TO MAKE SURE TO CHECK NOISE WHEN THE CAR IS COLD (GIVER OR TAKE 3 HOURS), THEY DID NOT LISTEN AND CHECKED IT WHEN WARM, WHEN THERE IS NO CLICKING OCCURS. DEEMED FINE. 5. BRAKE SQUEALS ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN USED. HAVE YET TO CHECK THIS ONE OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP. 6. ON A MORNING OF JAN. 2, 2008, I HAVE STARTED THE CAR ONLY TO NOTICE THAT THE AIR MODE HAS SWITCHED FROM DEFROST/FOOT AIR MODE TO FOOT MODE. I THOUGHT THE AIR CONTROL UNIT WAS SUPPOSED TO MEMORIZE THE LAST TIME I HAD THE MODE ON BUT ONCE EVERY OFTEN, IT SWITCHES BACK TO THE FOOT AIR MODE PLUS TURNING ON THE A/C EVERY TIME THE CAR STARTS. AFTER HEATING UP (AN HOUR OR SO OF DRIVING), THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE TRANSMISSION BEGINS TO FAIL. PUSH THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN, AND THE RPM'S GO WAY UP, BUT CAR BARELY ACCELERATES. FIRST ATTEMPT AT DEALERSHIP, THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. A DAY LATER, THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. ON SOME MINOR SLOPES, BUT NOT ALL, THE CVT TRANSMISSION-EQUIPPED 2007 ALTIMA WILL ROLL BACKWARDS SEVERAL FEET WHILE IN "DRIVE" POSING A HAZARD TO OBJECTS AND PERSONS BEHIND THE VEHICLE. THIS IS CONSISTENTLY REPRODUCIBLE IN OUR HOME DRIVEWAY BUT NOT ON STEEPER SLOPES SUCH AS A PARKING GARAGE. THE SURPRISING CONDITION CAUSED MY WIFE TO PANIC AND ALMOST LOSE CONTROL, NEARLY STRIKING ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN VERY RESPONSIVE. HOWEVER, AS OF THIS POSTING, NISSAN NORTH AMERICA ACKNOWLEDGES BUT REFUSES TO FIX THE ISSUE. *JB
