An independent service center stated that "Nissan Corp. had a recall on fuel pump sensors. 4. The fuel pump and fuel sensor were replaced. 5. I called Nissan Corp, but they said that vehicle did not qualify for a recall of the fuel sensor.

JUST FINISHED READING THROUGH 23 PAGES OF COMPLAINTS GOING BACK TO 2008 REGARDING FAILURE OF THE FUEL LEVEL SENDER UNIT--PRIMARILY ON 2007 NISSAN FRONTIERS. MINE FAILED AT APPROXIMATELY 69,000 MILES IN FEBRUARY 2020, WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS EXPERIENCED: UPON FILLING THE TANK, THE GAUGE WOULD DROP TO ZERO, THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE AS WOULD THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT--MY CODE READER DISPLAYED A 463 CODE, FUEL LEVEL SENSOR FAILURE. THE GAUGE WOULD GRADUALLY GO TO FULL, AND OPERATE NORMALLY UNTIL IT READ JUST UNDER HALF FULL, WHEN IT WOULD AGAIN DROP TO ZERO. WHILE THE FAILURE FELL WITHIN THE 72000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY, THE YEAR DIDN'T, SO NISSAN REFUSED TO MAKE THE REPAIRS. I HAVE TO JOIN THE CHORUS OF 2007 FRONTIER OWNERS WONDERING WHY IDENTICAL 2006 AND 2008 MODELS--WITH EXACTLY THE SAME SENDER--WERE SUBJECT TO A SAFETY RECALL, BUT NOT THE 2007S. IT'S AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, OR THE FUEL GAUGE SENDER'S PERFORMANCE WOULDN'T BE INCLUDED AS AN ERROR CODE IN THE OBD II SYSTEM. HOW ABOUT WORKING THE PROBLEM, NTSHA? IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT FOR FRONTIERS ABOUT THIS AGE. NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTEE A FEW YEARS AGO, BUT IT WASN'T LONG ENOUGH TO COVER THE DEFECT. NOW THE SENDING UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR THE FUEL GAUGE TO WORK, AND THE WHOLE GAS TANK NEEDS TO BE DROPPED TO DO IT. NISSAN OUGHT TO COVER THIS KNOWN ISSUE WITH A FULL RECALL, NOT JUST AN EXTENDED WARRANTEE.

OUR 07 NISSAN FRONTIER WAS BEING DRIVEN TO BE INSPECTED FOR REGISTRATION WHEN, AT A STOP LIGHT, IT JUST TURNED OFF AND WOULD NOT START. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC. HE HAD TO SEND IT TO THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR THE COMPUTER TO BE REPLACED AND REPROGRAMMED. ACCORDING TO THIS MECHANIC, THE LEAK FROM THE RADIATOR HAS MIXED WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID IN THE TRANSMISSION CAUSING ALL THESE COMPONENTS TO FAIL AND NEED REPLACING. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!

NISSAN SOLD ME A NEW TRUCK WITH A DESIGN FLAW, A FAULTY FUEL SENDING UNIT. NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS SAID I HAVE TO TAKE THE TRUCK WITH THE DESIGN FLAW (E.G. FAILED FUEL SENDING UNIT) TO A NISSAN DEALER AND PAY TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED (THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS ALREADY KNOWN TO ME AS BEING THE DESIGN FLAW OF A FAILED FUEL SENDING UNIT) AFTER WHICH THEY WOULD INVESTIGATE TO SEE IF THEY CAN PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO REPAIR IT THOUGH THEY ADMITTED AFTER CHECKING MY VIN THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY INSTANCE THAT WOULD COVER THE REPAIR (E.G. THEY ARE NOT GOING TO REPAIR IT). THE BOTTOM LINE IS I PURCHASED A NEW NISSAN FRONTIER WHICH I HAD MAINTAINED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC (NOT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP) AND IT CAME WITH A DESIGN FLAW (E.G. FUEL SENDING UNIT) THAT THEY WANT ME TO PAY OVER A HUNDRED DOLLARS TO HAVE DIAGNOSED AT ONE OF THEIR DEALERSHIPS AFTER WHICH THEY AREN'T GOING TO FIX IT FOR ME (DESPITE THE FACE SAVING ACT OF NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS). NISSAN DISPLAYED ZERO INTEGRITY IN FAILING TO DIAGNOSE AND PAY TO HAVE THE DESIGN FLAW REPAIRED, IN MY OPINION, AT THEIR COST. FURTHERMORE, THE POLICY THEY DEVELOPED TO "SAVE FACE" IS DISINGENUOUS IN MY ESTIMATION AND DESIGNED ONLY TO INCREASE THEIR PROFIT FURTHER. I'M A LOW INCOME WORKER WHO WILL DRIVE AROUND WITH A FUEL GAUGE THAT DOESN'T WORK AND THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON BECAUSE I CAN'T PAY THE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS THAT IT WOULD COST TO HAVE A DESIGN FLAW DIAGNOSED AT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP AFTERWARDS PAYING TO REPAIR IT MYSELF BECAUSE NISSAN ISN'T GOING TO.

FUEL GAUGE FAILS TO REGISTER PROPER AMOUNT OF FUEL, TRIGGERS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (MIL) AND REPORTS TROUBLE CODE SHOWING OPEN CIRCUIT IN FUEL SENSOR SYSTEM. THIS FAILURE REQUIRES ME TO WATCH MILEAGE BY USING TRIP ODOMETER TO MONITOR WHEN TO PURCHASE FUEL. COULD ALSO CAUSE FAILURE OF EMISSIONS TEST AS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. THIS WOULD BE AN UNNECESSARY FINANCIAL BURDEN TO FIX AS WELL AS HAVING A FAILURE OF THE EMISSIONS TEST BASED ON THE FUEL SENDING UNIT NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND NOT FROM EXCESSIVE EMISSIONS OR OTHER EMISSIONS CONTROL PARTS. EMISSIONS TESTS ARE $50-70 PER ATTEMPT WITH DYNO RUNS. ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR IS $5-750.00 FOR LABOR AND MATERIALS. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW 7/07 WITH 50 MILES ON IT AS IT WAS DELIVERED FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. CURRENTLY HAS 61,000 MILES. VEHICLE RUNS PERFECT OTHERWISE. WOULD LIKE NISSAN TO AT LEAST SEND THE REPLACEMENT PART (@ $250).

FUEL GAGE INDICATED THAT I HAD A BIT LESS THAN 1/2 TANK OF FUEL. RUN OUT OF FUEL AS THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS DISPLAYING THE WRONG AMOUNT OF FUEL SHORTLY AFTER THAT THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A P0463 CODE DEFECTIVE FUEL SENDING UNIT. CALLED NISSAN OF NORTH AMERICA FOR SUPPORT WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER IN ORDER FOR NISSAN TO HONOR THE WARRANTY. SPENT $106 DOLLARS THE FIRST TIME AT THE SHOP AND THEN $104 AT THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP. AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO NISSAN NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER AFFAIRS I WAS TOLD THAT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT IS NOT COVERED, THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING HOW CAN IT BE POSSIBLE THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED, IT ONLY HAS 33K MILES...THIS IS A LARGER ISSUE THAT NEEDS ATTENTION BY NHTSA AS THERE HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED ACCIDENTS FROM PEOPLE RUNNING OUT OF FUEL ON THE FREEWAY. I'VE RUN OUT OF FUEL 3 TIMES IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS AS I DEAL WITH NISSAN TO SEE IF THEY CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT MY ISSUE.

TRAVELING ALONG HWY 209 IN BIGFORK, MT, I NOTICED MY GAS GAUGE NEEDLE DROP FROM 1/2 TANK TO BELOW ZERO AND IMMEDIATELY THE FUEL LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. A MILE DOWN THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE STALLED AND HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY PULL-OVER WITH MY TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THANKFULLY, THE TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT THAT DAY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY, AND I HAD CELL SERVICE. I CALLED MY HUSBAND AND LET HIM KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. HE BROUGHT GAS AND, SURE ENOUGH, THE TRUCK STARTED ONCE AGAIN, BUT DID NOT REGISTER FUEL AGAIN UNTIL I FILLED THE TANK COMPLETELY. IT CONTINUES TO REPEAT THIS CYCLE WHERE IT WILL REGISTER UNTIL A CERTAIN FUEL LEVEL AND THEN THE NEEDLE WILL DIVE TO BELOW EMPTY.

FUEL LEVEL SENSOR MALFUNCTION, TRUCK SHUT OFF WHILE SHOWING IT WAS HALF FULL OF GAS. I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING SO I HAD A TRUCK LOAD OF FURNITURE AND ALSO PULLING MY BOAT. I LUCKILY CARRY A HEAVY DUTY CHAIN WITH ME AND WAS ABLE TO GET SOMEONE TO TOW ME TO A GAS STATION. I THEN READ THAT NISSAN HAD RECALLED 2005-2008 MODELS BUT WHEN I CALLED MY PARTICULAR TRUCK WASN'T ONE OF THEM. IT DOESN'T REALLY MAKE SENSE TO ME IF MY TRUCK IS SHOWING THE SAME PROBLEMS WHY IT ISN'T RECALLED. THIS DIDN'T CAUSE THAT BIG OF AN ISSUE FOR ME BUT I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND COULD PUT SOMEONE IN DANGER OF HAVING AN ACCIDENT. THE SEAL AROUND WHERE THE SENSOR CONNECTS DOESN'T HOLD SO GAS GETS IN AND CORRODES THE CONNECTING PINS CAUSING IT TO MALFUNCTION. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME $400 TO FIX IT SO I BOUGHT THE PART ONLINE FOR $85 AND FIXED IT MYSELF. I DON'T FEEL LIKE THIS IS RIGHT AND NISSAN NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. *TR

I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE FUEL GAUGE PROBLEMS WITH MY 2007 NISSAN FRONTIER THAT I NOW SEE SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT. IT HAS BEEN CLOSE TO A YEAR THAT I HAVE HAD THE ISSUE BUT I KNEW IT WAS THE FUEL LEVEL INDICATOR SENSOR CAUSING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME SO I DIDN'T GET IT FIXED. I WOULD FILL UP WITH GAS AND THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD STAY AT EMPTY (NO MATTER HOW MUCH FUEL WAS IN THE TANK WHEN I STARTED FUELING). THEN AFTER DRIVING UP TO 100 MILES THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD GO UP TO WHAT I ASSUME WAS AN ACCURATE READING. IT HAS BEEN ABOUT A MONTH NOW THE FUEL GAUGE HAS COMPLETELY QUIT WORKING. I WOULD FILL UP AT BETWEEN 250 MILES TO 300 MILES ON A TANK BECAUSE I KNEW I ALWAYS GOT OVER 300 MILES ON A TANK OF GAS. WELL, THIS MORNING ON MY WAY TO WORK I RAN OUT A GAS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION. I AM VERY DISGUSTED TO SEE ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND NISSAN IS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I REALLY NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL I HAVE UNLESS I GO BACK TO FILL IT UP JUST TO BE SAFE. I HAVE LOOKED ONLINE TODAY AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A MASSIVE AND VERY WIDESPREAD FUEL SYSTEM ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE TYPE. I NOTIFIED NISSAN TODAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NOT AN OPEN RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE, BASED ON THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS I HAVE FOUND FROM MY RESEARCH DEALING WITH THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE. THE NISSAN AGENT ADVISED ME TO GO TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP GARAGE AND ASK FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. SHE SAID TO CALL HER BACK OR HAVE A MECHANIC REP. CALL TO ADVISE WHAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK REVEALED. SHE STATED NISSAN MAY BE ABLE TO HELP WITH SOME FINANCIAL AIDE. I TRULY APPRECIATE THE GESTURE, BUT THAT DOES NOT FIX THE FACT THAT THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE COMPLETELY COVERED BY A MANUFACTURER RECALL. YESTERDAY I RAN OUT OF GAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO COAST TWO LANES OVER TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. HOWEVER, THE PORTION I WAS IN WAS VERY NARROW AND DID NOT OFFER AMPLE ROOM TO POUR THE GAS IN THE TANK THAT A FRIEND BROUGHT ME AN HOUR AFTER I RAN OUT OF GAS. A POLICE OFFICER KINDLY STOPPED TO ASSIST WITH THE VERY DANGEROUS MISSION OF TRYING TO GET THE GAS IN THE VEHICLE STANDING ONLY INCHES FROM THE TRAFFIC AS IT RUSHED BY AT VERY HIGH SPEEDS. TO MAKE A LONG STORY A LITTLE SHORTER, THERE WAS AN INCIDENT INVOLVING TWO TRACTOR TRAILERS AND TWO CARS. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATED THAT THE CAR HAD A QUARTER OF A TANK WHEN THE CAR STOPPED ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF FUEL. THEN THE GAUGE INDICATED EMPTY WHEN I WAS ABLE TO REFUEL THE CAR. THIS WAS A RECALL IN THE 2006 AND 2008 MODELS. WHY IS THIS NOT BEING RECALLED IN THE 2007 MODEL. *TR

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHEN THE GAS TANK WAS UNDER A 1/4 FULL. I FILLED THE GAS TANK UP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON AND THE FUEL GAUGE READ EMPTY. WHEN APPROXIMATELY THE GAS WAS DOWN TO 3/4 FULL THE GAS GAUGE BEGAN TO WORK AGAIN. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. WHEN I FILED THE GAS TANK THE GAS GAUGE SHOWED EMPTY. I HAD THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CHECKED OUT AND IT WAS IDENTIFIED AS A FAULTY FUEL SENSOR. I CLEARED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WHICH STAYED CLEARED UNTIL THE NEXT TIME THE GAS TANK WAS FILLED AND THE ISSUES CAME BACK NO FUEL GAUGE READING AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. *TR

SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT WAS ON WHEN I STARTED MY TRUCK THAT DAY AND THE FUEL GAUGE WAS MALFUNCTIONING. AFTER DOING A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET, IT SOUNDS LIKE IT MAY BE THE FUEL SENDING UNIT OR FUEL PUMP WHICH IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL. THANKS. *TR

AFTER REFUELING THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE WAS STILL INDICATING THAT IT HAD ONLY 1/4 TANK OF FUEL. I DROVE ABOUT 2 MILES AND THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER ARRIVING AT HOME I SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE, CHECKED THE FUEL CAP FOR TIGHTNESS, AND RESTARTED. THE FUEL GAUGE DROPPED TO EMPTY, THE LOW FUEL LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE SES LIGHT REMAINED ON. LATER THAT DAY I DROVE ABOUT 35 MILES UNDER THE AFOREMENTIONED CONDITIONS. UPON STOPPING AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE FUEL GAUGE WENT TO FULL, BUT THE SES LIGHT REMAINED ON. THAT IS THE SITUATION AS IT STANDS NOW.I HAVE NOT CONTACTED NISSAN DIRECTLY YET, BUT I HAVE RESEARCHED THE SITUATION, AND FOUND NUMEROUS REPORTS ONLINE OF THE SAME PROBLEM, AND OF NISSAN'S UNWILLINGNESS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER.(IT IS APPARENTLY A DEFECTIVE FUEL SENDING UNIT.) MY REASON FOR REPORTING THIS IS TWOFOLD. 1) TO MAKE EVERYONE AWARE OF THE ISSUE, AND 2) TO EXPRESS MY CONCERNS THAT A MALFUNCTIONING FUEL GAUGE COULD CAUSE A CRASH IF THE DRIVER RAN OUT OF FUEL WHILE IN MOTION, AND HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY STOP. *TR
