While I have had no issues so far, the recall has been in place since September 2024, and Nissan has not provided a fix. This is far too long.
Nissan announced recall R24B2 on September 19, 2024. The vehicle is at risk of overheating/fire when FAST CHARGING. Nissan has not provided ANY solution to this issue in the 14 months the recall has been open. Dealers have no information, Nissan says they are "working" on a software fix but give no date or schedule for repair. The official response from Nissan Corporation has been to tell us that they believe the recall solution of "DO NOT FAST CHARGE" is sufficient and they do not need to provide us any further assistance or compensation. The vehicle cannot be driven further than a single charge will allow because major EV charging station companies have now BANNED Nissan Leaf's from using their stations because of fire risk. This means outside of my HOME, I cannot charge the Leaf AT ALL. There is no usability of a vehicle that cannot be charged or powered outside of the home for risk of fire or damage to the battery. I was charged MORE money to have fast charging and a larger battery in this vehicle to be able to utilize it for ALL of my driving needs, including the ability to fast charge to increase range of the vehicle. Our vehicle had swollen battery modules that had bent or damaged the stacks and required a new battery to be installed due to the swelling of the modules leaving the vehicle unable to power on. Nissan replaced the battery in October 2025, but informed us despite a NEW battery the vehicle STILL CANNOT BE FAST CHARGED, as they are still unsure of how to fix the rapid heating of the cells. The vehicle will likely see the same swelling and degradation of the batteries without a PROPER solution from Nissan, leaving me to minimize any driving of a vehicle I am actively paying for, to avoid risk to my family, home and vehicle.
I have the same complaint as the other 2019 leaf owners. It's been over a years since I was told a recall was in effect for the car I haven't been able to drive it any significant distance because I can't use a fast charger. Additionally, the rear camera that had been recalled and supposedly fixed is now malfunctioning again. When I contacted Nissan I did get in touch with the arbitration department but they are giving me the runaround
Nissan has told it's customers to not fast charge the vehicle due to the risk of a battery fire, which is a big issue if you are trying to drive a longer distance. No ability to safely fast charge this vehicle makes it worthless unless you use it locally only. Nissan has promised a remedy for this situation, first deadline was March 2025, but they have consistently delayed this action. Something needs to be done in order to rectify this issue. I do not feel safe fast charging this vehicle, and it's pretty worthless to me as a primary vehicle.
Back up camera stops working randomly, displays blank screen. Was supposedly fixed by dealer in recall repair. Problem still occurs.
I am currently using a 2019 NISSAN LEAF electric vehicle and the vehicle is still under NISSAN's 7-year warranty. In September 2024, Nissan sent me a notice advising me to temporarily stop fast charging the vehicle to avoid overheating the battery and possibly exploding and wait for them to fix the vehicle charger. Two months later, Nissan continued to send me a new notice and continued to schedule me until spring 2025. I still trusted and waited for them, in June 25 Nissan sent me a third notice to wait until the third quarter of this 25. Up to now, more than 9 months have passed but they still do not have spare parts to replace my vehicle and I still do not know if Nissan will have spare parts for my vehicle by the end of the third quarter of this 25? in the past 9 months, i have had to spend a lot of time every time i need to charge my car. just because i don't have my own house so i have to take my car to the charging station and every time i charge i have to wait for about 5 hours. i don't understand what nissan wants now? ◦
This is a follow-up to my last complaint because I never received a response. A year ago, Nissan issued a safety recall for some 2019 and 2020 Nissan Leafs that they still don't have a remedy for (Manufacturer Recall # R24B2; NHTSA Recall # 24V-700). This recall instructs affected owners not to DC-fast charge our vehicles, which means we can't DRIVE our vehicles in many applications. Nissan is supposedly always "finalizing" this remedy, and the remedy is supposedly always "coming soon." Then, when the promised release date comes and goes, Nissan just announces a new future release-date for their still non-existent remedy. This has been happening for a year. Owners are supposed to just not use our vehicles the way they were advertised. We're supposed to just not drive our vehicles on trips requiring a DC-fast charge, even though the ability to DC-fast charge is one of the reasons we bought this car. How is this legal? Is the NHTSA planning to do anything to make Nissan issue a remedy for this safety recall?
I purchased a 2019 Nissan LEAF in January 2024 and registered it with the DMV. Nissan never notified me of Recall R24B2, despite federal requirements that current registered owners be contacted. Because I was not notified, I used Level 3 quick charging more than 50 times before learning of the recall. The recall states that using fast charging can pose a fire hazard and risk of injury or death. Nissan’s failure to notify me placed me, my children, my passengers, and vehicles parked near me at charging stations in danger. Nissan has admitted that they never notified me, and I have written confirmation from them and from NHTSA that manufacturers are required to notify all registered owners. Nissan has still not provided a concrete remedy or addressed compensation for the danger and hardship caused. This is not just a defect — it is negligence and a serious consumer safety failure. I request that NHTSA investigate Nissan’s failure to notify owners and require Nissan to provide both a timely remedy and financial compensation.
I own a 2019 Nissan Leaf that is subject to safety recall # RS4B2. Outrageously, while this safety recall was issued almost a year ago, Nissan has to date still not offered an actual remedy. Instead, for the last year, Nissan's "remedy" has been to simply instruct Leaf owners to indefinitely refrain from DC fast-charging our vehicles. This instruction is not only logistically absurd - akin to telling the owners of gas vehicles that they can't visit gas stations for an entire year - but also financially damaging: it has rendered our vehicles totally unusable for many driving applications for almost a year. As such, Nissan's instruction to its customers to indefinitely refrain from using their vehicles the way they were marketed and sold is not merely an inconvenience but rises to the level of consumer fraud. I have asked Nissan to provide just one of the following, all of which they have refused: 1. a loaner Nissan Leaf capable of safely DC fast charging 2. an offer to repurchase my Nissan Leaf 3. a statement in writing from Nissan USA that while waiting for Nissan's still non-existent remedy to its safety recall, I may continue to DC fast-charge my Nissan Leaf without voiding the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty. I would be willing to accept any one of these three solutions at Nissan USA's choosing. What I am not willing to accept is being told that, until Nissan gets around to releasing a remedy to a safety recall that it issued almost a year ago, I may not use the car that I purchased according to its specifications. What can NHTSA do to force Nissan to resolve this issue?
I am writing to make a formal complaint on how long this recall is taking for my vehicle. It’s been almost a year and no updates. I tried to get an appraisal for my vehicle but was turned away because the dealerships are unable to purchase my vehicle until the recall is resolved. I think its dangerous and very careless to know about this fire hazard while using the ChaDeMao fast charger but assume people will not need to use it over the course of the year. I have used the fast charger against the recall issue only in emergency situations, with caution, however, I don’t want to feel afraid to use it. Plus I am noticing a lot of fast chargers are taking this type of plug out of many chargers in my area. Is there an update with what Nissan will do for this recall? Will they switch over to the new standard fast charger adapter? I hope to find some answers when submitting this complaint.
Received a recall notice for my 2019 Nissan Leaf that there was an issue with the battery, they promised a remedy by November 2024. They then pushed the remedy 6 months and we are past the pushed time. The recall states that there is a chance of fire if using the high speed charger. Makes the car unusable for long distance travel because I have small child and will not risk her safety to charge the car on a trip.
Because of the uncorrected recall issue, I have been unable to use the quick charge on my vehicle for 8 months. This has been an great inconvenience and will cause me to **have to rent a car for the summer if the problem is not corrected.** Remedy has missed the promised fix date by two months already. From the recall notice WHILE AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS LEVEL 3 QUICK CHARGING, THE INCREASED ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE COULD RESULT IN RAPID HEATING OF THE BATTERY. IF QUICK CHARGING CONTINUES, A BATTERY FIRE MAY OCCUR INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY. CUSTOMERS ARE INSTRUCTED NOT TO USE LEVEL 3 QUICK CHARGING VIA THE CHADEMO CONNECTOR UNTIL THE REMEDY IS COMPLETED
This vehicle has recall with fast charging component. When we purchased this pre-owned car, the remedy date for this recall was given as November 2024. Hence we purchased this vehicle even though there was a recall. Now the remedy date on the website shows as March 2025. Because of which we are not able to use this vehicle to go office where we could have charged the vehicle using fast-EV charger in office parking. It is inconvenient for us.
I was driving on the highway and sped up slightly to get into the passing lane. Suddenly, the dashboard changed to “Service EV system no power” and the car completely dropped out of acceleration, de-accelerated and lost power. With no warning. With the momentum I already had, I was able to get to the shoulder, but if anyone had been behind me, I would have been hit.
On 7/19/2024 while charging the car at Chargepoint Johns Creek, I heard a "clunk" sound as if something had popped off from beneath the body of the Leaf. At the same time, the charging emergency stopped. Smoke started to come out from under the Leaf. There was a smell as if something was melting, making me feel dizzy and nauseous. I felt a sense of confusion from inhaling the smoke. Since both my son and I were outside the car, we were able to quickly pull away and escape as soon as the smoke started. If we had been inside the car, or if this had happened while driving, we might have been unable to escape in time, lost consciousness from the smoke, and possibly died in the fire. The smoke continued for about 15 minutes, followed by a fire. At the same time, there was a sound of something exploding. The police arrived, followed by the fire truck. It took a long time to extinguish the fire, possibly because the lithium battery caught fire. Please refer to the video. ⚪︎Mental and Physical Condition After the Accident Both my son and I are experiencing symptoms similar to PTSD. When we smell smoke or drive a car, we feel chills, nausea, and dizziness, which negatively affect our daily lives. This incident left burn scur to my son and has started having nightmares and crying at night. Seeing an electric vehicle scares us to the point that our bodies freeze and we can't move. Also, seeing fire or hearing car sounds suddenly makes us tremble, our hearts race, and we have difficulty breathing. We start crying uncontrollably in a panic, and it takes time to calm down. It is difficult to control our emotions. We are experiencing insomnia, likely due to the excitement of our nerves from the accident. We probably need mental treatment such as therapy and physical treatment to alleviate insomnia and tension.
In January 2024, The rear camera on my 2019 LEAF SL PLUS failed to work. I took it to local Nissan dealer and they indicated that could be a loose connection. They accidentally tap on the camera and it return to function for a while. I reported this to [XXX] in January. An agent called me and after a month of evaluation he told me Nissan Consumer Affairs could not repair for me on this item. Their previous recall on the rear camera on other Leafs does not cover the this vehicle with this VIN number. My rear camera currently does not work. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The backup camera does not work correctly. It shows blank in stead of surrounding video. Sometimes closing the back cover again can fix the issue but most of time no video is displayed.
Infotainment system frequently resets. This occurs rarely at times while driving (inconvenient, not a significant problem) but it frequently occurs within 10 seconds of starting car at which time the backup camera cannot display. This is a safety concern because it means backing up without safety backup camera working.
Having issues with the back up camera it will randomly not work, showing a black screen instead of rearview. Other times the image is excessively dark compared to other surround camera views or has horizontal lines that interfere with view. Car is available for inspection. I have reported to the dealer multiple times. They have not been able to replicate. The problem is intermittent, dealer has not been able to replicate. Asked that I take video when it occurs which I have done. No warning lights or lamp or consistent pattern to warn when the issue will occur. Most recent incident noted below.
AFTER RECENTLY DOING THE RECALL UPDATE ON THE VEHICLE, I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE BATTERY PERCENTAGE LIGHT INDICATOR NOW SIGNIFICANTLY DROPS ITS PERCENTAGE SOMETIMES UPT TO 15% WITHIN A COUPLE OF MINUTES DRIVING AT A CONSTANT SPEED AND THEN WHEN SLOWING OR COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP THE BATTERY PERCENTAGE WILL INCREASE BACK ANYWHERE BETWEEN 10 AND 15 PERCENT WHICH LEADS TO DECEIVING THE DRIVER AND MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO GO INTO SAFETY MODE. CONTINUES TO OCCUR EVERY DAY I USE IT SINCE IT IS A COMMUTER VEHICLE FOR ME. Unable to updload a video. Please email me correspondence so i may send a video.
Rear camera shows black screen when backing up. Guidance lines are still present. Research online indicates this to be a common issue with my vehicle.
Backup camera stopped working. There has been no damage or known circumstance that may have contributed to this failure.
Car backup camera stopped working. Screen is black or showing green and pink static lines. Several months prior the car entertainment system would come on momentarily for few seconds when the car was off (not powered). other occasional issues related to blue tooth not recognizing phone ( not sure if all of these issues are related)
The issue with our car is that the Distance-to-Empty (DTE) calculation for miles remaining for battery charge is very inaccurate. This issue causes the car to prematurely alert the driver that the battery is depleted when it truly is not depleted. While not a true safety issue, it's a driver distraction that can certainly lead to a safety issue. Here's an example of the problem: 1. Fully charge vehicle- the DTE registers 223 miles remaining; reset trip meters. The LeafSpy application shows a 215.9 miles which appears the more accurate reading. 2. Drive 158 miles, the DTE now says only 3 miles remaining. (The DTE dramatically drops after 100 miles of driving each time). The car's historic miles/KWH is 3.9 and is consistent so issue is not related to lost efficiency. 3. Drive another 14 miles to 172 miles, LeafSpy indicates a 23.8% Battery State of Charge and 49.5 miles remaining to 2% charge 5. Check the math for LeafSpy: 216 - 172 = 44 miles 6. I have been auditing the car for a few months and LeafSpy is super accurate. The battery is good, the Nissan DTE calculation is not. We have taken the car to two dealers and have contacted Nissan EV Customer support (1-877-664-2738). I warned Nissan I was going to issue a report so things get documented more.
The rear view mirror camera does not display an image on the console. Visibility behind the car is very poor without this camera due to the car's design, creating a hazardous driving condition.
Backup camera issue On a fairly frequent basis the backup camera does not function. The other cameras (side mirror, front, etc) always work correctly. Closing the rear hatch "firmly" typically resolves the issue and restores the clrear camera function. Opening/Closing the rear hatch at some later point may or may not cause the camera to fail again.
The backup camera on our 2019 Nissan LEAF (VIN : [XXX] works sporadically. There's a recall for the same issue but it doesn't cover our model year. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Backup Camera is a blank screen or pink screen.
2019 Nissan Leaf. On multiple occasions during hard acceleration the throttle would stick wide open and not release. 06/15/21, 06/29/21, 07/23/21, 10/01,21. I would have to stomp on the brake pedal and make several attempts before I could get the throttle to release. I have reported the issue to the Nissan dealership and on 10/02/2021 they diagnosed it as a braking issue and said they found no problem or faults. The issue is intermittent and has been reported by other Nissan Leaf owners. Very dangerous issue that needs resolved!!
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY GOING ROUGHLY 70MPH WITH PRO PILOT CRUISE CONTROL ENABLED. THE CAR SENSED A CAR AHEAD AND SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES, BUT THERE WERE NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME AND WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY A CAR GOING 70+ MPH ON I5 . *TR

ON FRIDAY 5/22/2020 AT 8:59 PM A 2019 NISSAN LEAF WAS IN MOTION DRIVING AT LESS THAN 7 MILES PER HOURS WHEN THE MAIN SCREEN DISPLAYED: 'WARNING: SERVICE EV SYSTEM POWERED REDUCED'. WITHIN SECONDS, THE OPERATOR STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND TOOK A PHOTO OF THE SCREEN. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE OPERATOR SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF VEHICLE. THE OPERATOR QUICKLY EXITED THE VEHICLE. VERY SHORTLY AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT THE FLAMES OUT. SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS OF WARNING SCREEN, TRIP REPORT, VEHICLE ON FIRE, AND VEHICLE AFTER FIRE WAS PUT OUT. *TR*DT*JB

WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN STOP AND GO OR HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM THROTTLES ITSELF BACK TO CONSERVE POWER IN THE TRACTION BATTERY. COMBINED WITH THE FACT THERE ARE NO REAR SEAT VENTS (EITHER IN THE CONSOLE OR THE FLOOR), IT GETS DANGEROUSLY HOT IN THE VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. ACCORDING TO NISSAN, USA, THIS IS THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE. TEMPERATURES OF OVER 100 DEGREES HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN MY DAUGHTER'S CAR SEAT WHILE IN TRAFFIC WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING HARDLY RUNNING OR RUNNING AT A VERY LOW POWER. ACCORDING TO NISSAN, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN MEET THEIR ADVERTISED EPA RANGE. ANOTHER AREA THIS PROBLEM EFFECTS IS THAT WHEN THE WINDSHIELD IS FOGGY, AND YOU ARE IN TRAFFIC, IT WILL NOT PROPERLY DEFROST CAUSING A SERIOUS VISIBILITY PROBLEM. I HAVE MULTIPLE VIDEOS OF ALL OF THIS. I CONTACTED NISSAN BUT THEY CLAIM THAT THE CAR IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. I AM CONTACTING THE BBB LEMON LAW SECTION. MY LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE HAS ASKED ME TO FILE A NHTSA COMPLAINT AS THEY FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.
