2003 NISSAN MAXIMA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO AIRBAG SAFETY RECALL. CONSUMER STATED THAT THEY NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE. *LD *JS

TAKATA RECALL-RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL FROM NISSAN ABOUT A RECALL ON MY 2003 MAXIMA PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS (NHTSA RECALL 14V-361). SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR SEPT.26, 2014 @ 3PM TO HAVE WORK DONE. DROPPED VEHICLE OFF ON THE MORNING OF SEPT 26, 2014 BECAUSE I HAD TO LEAVE TOWN BEFORE THE TIME OF APPT. I PICKED MY VEHICLE UP LATER THAT DAY FROM THE DEALER. ON APRIL 15, 2016, I WAS AT WORK ON LUNCH BREAK IN OUR PARKING LOT AND I NOTICED A LIGHT ON MY DASHBOARD ON. I TOOK MY MAXIMA TO THE DEALER TO HAVE LIGHT CHECKED TO FIND OUT IT WAS ABOUT MY AIRBAG. RECEIVED AN ESTIMATE OF WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE, TOTAL OF WORK NEEDED $1385 PLUS $90 I HAD TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS DONE. THE ESTIMATE WAS FOR THE EXACT SAME WORK THAT WAS SUPPOSE TO HAVE BEEN COMPLETED IN SEPT. 2014. I FINALLY HAD MY MECHANIC FIX THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS SUPPOSE HAD FIXED AND I HAVE NOT HAD AN ISSUE SINCE.

WHILE THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING STRAIGHT AT 45 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE DRIVING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED CRASHED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. A GRAY SUBSTANCE EMITTED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR WHIPLASH. THE FRONT PASSENGER EXPERIENCED HEAD TRAUMA AND INTERNAL INJURIES, WHICH RESULTED IN THE FATALITY OF HER UNBORN CHILD. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD TO A SALVAGE YARD. MELLOY NISSAN (7707 LOMAS BLVD NE, ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87110, (505) 545-6420) WAS NOTIFIED OF THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INVESTIGATED THE NON-DEPLOYMENT, BUT INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO AIR BAG FAILURE. I ASKED ABOUT THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG, AND THEY SAID THE ONLY ONE TO BE TAKEN CARE OF WAS THE PASSENGER SIDE FOR MY CAR MODEL, IS THIS TRUE? MY CONCERN IS, AS FAR AS I KNOW, THE INJURIES AND DEATHS HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG. CAN YOU CLARIFY THIS FOR MY PEACE OF MIND. THANKS A LOT!

THIS IS REFERENCE TO TWO SITUATION CONCERNING NISSAN RECALLS. IN 2014 I TOOK MY CAR TO SANSONE NISSAN DEALER ON RT 1, NJ TO TAKE CARE OF THE AIRBAG RECALL ISSUE NHTSA REF#15V287000. MY AIRBAG LIGHT WAS NOT ON WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, AFTER I CAME HOME A WEEK LATER THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I DON'T THINK THE DEALER TOOK CARE OF THE RECALL ISSUE, IF THEY DID MY AIRBAG LIGHT WOULD NOT BE ON. I WOULD LIKE NISSAN TO GIVE AUTHORIZATION TO THE DEALER TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. MY SECOND ISSUE WAS ON JAN 2016, I WAS DRIVING TO WORK, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR SHUT OFF ON ME, THE BRAKE LOCK UP AND ALL I COULD DO WAS STAIR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD..I WAS LUCKY THAT THERE WASN'T ANY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I HAD TO CALL THE TOW TRUCK TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED BUT BEFORE THE TOW TRUCK CAME I TRIED STARTING THE CAR AGAIN AND IT STARTED. I WAS A FEW MINUTES FROM HOME, SO I DROVE BACK HOME AND I HAD MY LOCAL MECHANIC PICKED IT UP AND DID A DIAGNOSIS ON IT. HE SAID IT WAS THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR, I PURCHASED IT AND HE INSTALLED IT. THE CAR STARTED WORKING A LITTLE BETTER BUT MY SERVICE ENGINE SOON WARNING LIGHT IS STILL ON. I DID A LITTLE INVESTIGATION AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING RECALL #03V455000. I READ IT AND FOUND THAT THE CONSEQUENCE ON THE RECALL IS THE EXACT SAME THING THAT HAPPEN TO ME. AGAIN SANSONE DEALER ON RT. 1 IN NJ IS CLAIMING THAT THEY TOOK CARE OF THIS ISSUE BUT I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT THIS WAS A RECALL BY NISSAN. I WANTED NISSAN TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BASED ON THE FIX UNDER NHTSA REF# 03V455000. I'VE BEEN TAKING CAR OF ALL THE MAINTENANCE ON MY CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT FROM NISSAN BUT I FEEL THAT NISSAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE TWO ISSUE, SINCE IT WAS DEFECT IN DESIGN ON THEIR END.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 03V455000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

THE DRIVER-SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED UPON CRASH AND CAUSED A BRUISE AND 2ND DEGREE BURN TO MY LEFT ARM (INNER FOREARM). THE BRUISE INJURY WAS FROM THE IMPACT OF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. ADDITIONALLY, THE NISSAN LOGO (DECAL) ON THE STEERING WHEEL IMPACTED MY ARM AND CAUSED A 2ND DEGREE BURN - THIS BURN HAS NOW LEFT A PERMANENT SCAR IN THE SHAPE OF THE NISSAN LOGO ON MY LEFT ARM. I NOTICED THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT ON THE NISSAN CARS ' THEIR NISSAN LOGO DECALS ARE NOT FLUSH WITH THE STEERING SURFACE (LIKE OTHER CAR MANUFACTURERS) AND HENCE CAN SEVERELY IMPACT THE DRIVER IN CASE OF AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. *TR

I WAS STOPPED BEHIND A PICKUP TRUCK WHEN I WAS HIT FROM BEHIND. UPON IMPACT, MY 2003 NISSAN MAXIMA WAS SLAMMED INTO THE PICKUP TRUCK. THE IMPACT TO BOTH THE BACK AND FRONT OF MY CAR CAUSED THE PASSENGER'S SIDE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY, BUT NOT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG. I AM HAPPY TO SAY THAT I WALKED AWAY FROM THE ACCIDENT. HOWEVER....FOR AN AIR BAG TO FAIL TO DEPLOY WHEN A CAR IS HIT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FRONT BUMPER . . . WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO TOTAL THE VEHICLE . . . . IS VERY CONCERNING. TWO DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT, I CALLED NISSAN AND PATIENTLY RECOUNTED THE EVENTS OF THE ACCIDENT INCLUDING SPECIFIC VEHICLE INFORMATION, DRIVER INFORMATION, STREET LOCATIONS AND POLICE CASE NUMBER. AFTER 33 MINUTES OF ANSWERING QUESTIONS, I WAS TOLD THAT MY NISSAN CASE #507-46-73 WOULD BE FORWARDED TO AN 'AIR BAG SPECIALIST.' I WAS NOT PERMITTED TO SPEAK TO ANYONE AT THAT TIME ACCEPT THE INFORMATION GATHERING PHONE AGENT. ON A WEEKDAY, DURING BUSINESS HOURS, THERE WAS NOBODY IN A POSITION OF RESPONSIBILITY WHO I COULD BE TRANSFERRED TO, NOT EVEN A SUPERVISOR. SO AS I SIT HERE FIVE WEEKS LATER,I HAVE DECIDED TO FORWARD THE DETAILS TO THE NHTSA IN HOPES THAT YOU CAN IMPROVE UPON THE GENERAL APATHY AT NISSAN AND HAVE SOMEONE STAND AND TAKE NOTICE OF THE ONLY SALIENT POINT OF MY WHOLE CALL TO NISSAN: YOUR EQUIPMENT MALFUNCTIONED...CALL ME. AT THIS POINT, I HAVE PURCHASED A NEW VEHICLE (NOT A NISSAN) AND HAVE MOVED ON, BUT MY HOPE IS THAT IF SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED DUE TO AN AIRBAG DEFECT, THAT THEY CAN REFERENCE MY EXPERIENCE SO THEY CAN TAKE NISSAN TO THE CLEANERS. CONSUMER PLACED BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THEN, CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND COLLIDED INTO A BUILDING. UPON IMPACT, DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. BUT PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAG DID DEPLOY. DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES, AND WENT TO THE HOSPITAL ON HIS OWN. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. THIS CAUSED THE DRIVER TO CRASH INTO A GUARD RAIL. UPON IMPACT, BOTH FRONTAL AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. CONSUMER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. *AK

UPON IMPACT, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. HOWEVER, PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES VEHICLE EXPERIENCED EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. *AK
