The contact called on behalf of the owner of a 2009 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that after the windshield was replaced by Safelite Auto Glass, the employee at Safelite attempted to start the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to start, and the steering wheel had seized. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the electronic steering column lock had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed back to the residence. Upon further investigation, the contact found Manufacturer Recall Number: PC516, which involved the electronic steering column lock (ESCL). However, the VIN was not included. The contact stated that Safelite did not remove the rearview mirror. However, the rearview mirror was left hanging while the windshield was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the Service Campaign under PC516 for the same issue, and the Service Campaign had since expired. The failure persisted, and the vehicle remained at the residence unrepaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Maxima. The contact received notification of an undisclosed recall. The contact stated that while the vehicle was off, the push-to-start button was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to start. The immobilizer warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the key fob and the steering lock needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

The steering wheel lock malfunctioned. The part is available for inspection. The car was parked on the street. It endangered others because it would not start and had to be towed. This issue was confirmed and reproduced by the dealer with diagnostics. There were no symptoms prior to this issue and the warning light only came on after the part malfunctioned.

In 2016 we had to replace the steering lock mechanism. Went to start the car and a security light came on and car would not start , and had to get the car towed from work. We paid to have the part replaced on 12/23/2016. Now, 11/27/2023 we had the same issue with the steering lock mechanism where we tried to start the vehicle and it won’t due to this same issue. Now having to get the car towed again to have the part replaced. I saw there was a voluntary safety recall on this issue in 2017. We did not receive any letter stating our car was affected, yet we replaced the part in 2016 with no reimbursement and now again in 2023 with the part doubling in cost.

TWO DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT MY CAR FROM THE DEALERSHIP I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED FROM MY HOUSE BECAUSE IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, FIELD STEERING WAS SO OUT OF CONTROL I HAD A HARD TIME KEEPING IN MY LANE THE BRAKES WERE IF YOU WERE TO JUST TOUCH THE BRAKES THE SLIGHTEST YOU WOULD GO OUT THE WINDSHIELD PRACTICALLY. AFTER THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE FIXED THE STEERING ISSUES, I PICKED MY CAR UP FROM THE SHOP AND I WAS GOING DOWN THE CITY STREET AND IT JERKED SO HARD TO THE RIGHT THAT I JUMPED THE CURB ALMOST HIT A BUSH AND THREE PEOPLE WALKING IN THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT WAS MY PROBLEM NOT THEIRS.*DT*JB

THE CONTACT CALLED (HILLTOP NISSAN LOCATED AT 258 STATE ROUTE 10, EAST HANOVER, NJ 07936) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SUBJECTED TO A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S CONSUMER AFFAIRS. THE CONTACT DID SO AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 154,000.

AFTER MUCH RESEARCH THIS VEHICLE HAS A CAMPAIGN FOR THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK THROUGH NISSAN . I CONTACTED NISSAN AND WAS TOLD DUE TO THE AGE AND MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REIMBURSE ! DUE TO MALFUNCTION MY CAR SHOULD HAVE THE APPROPRIATE STEERING BOX IDENTIFIED IN THEIR CAMPAIGN. THE DEALERSHIP AND NISSAN CORPORATION REFUSED TO ABIDE BY THEIR OWN CAMPAIGN AND DENIED ANY REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS.

POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKS COMPLETELY OUT AND HAVE TO REFILL EVERY TWO WEEKS. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE PARKWAY AND MY RPM KEPT JUMPING SLIGHTLY. NISSAN HAS A RECALL ON CERTAIN 2009 NISSAN MAXIMAS ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY. MY MAXIMA IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. HOWEVER, IN JULY OF 2014 DURING ROUTINE SERVICE AT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK WAS REPLACED. A FEW DAYS AGO IT FAILED AGAIN, I HAD TO TOW IT TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP, I WAS INFORMED THAT NISSAN WILL NOT COVER ANY PART OF THE COST OF $797.19. MY CASE NUMBER WITH NISSAN USA IS 29509408. I'M ASKING FOR THE REPLACEMENT COST AND $40.00 FOR TOWING COST FOR A PART THAT WAS INVOLVED IN A RECALL AND HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE.

CAR WOULD NOT START ON A BLISTERY COLD DAY. LUCKILY, IT HAPPENED INFRONT OF MY HOUSE, BUT I THEN HAD TO GET TOWED TO A GARAGE BECAUSE THE WINDOWS WENT DOWN WHEN I TRIED TO START THE CAR. STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED. "KEY" LIGHT TURNS ON. ALL FUNCTIONS ON FOB STILL WORK AND THE CAR HAD A BRAND NEW BATTERY INSTALLED 3 MONTHS AGO. SEEMS TO BE THE STEERING LOCK MODULE WHICH HAS CAUSED THE CAR NOT TO START.

NISSAN IS OFFERING TO REPLACE FREE OF CHARGE FOR VEHICLES WITH CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS (NHTSA #10119190, NISSAN CAMPAIGN ID PC516). HOWEVER, NISSAN HAS STATED THAT MY VIN# IS NOT PART OF THE PROGRAM. NISSAN HAS ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE NHTSA SET THE PARAMETERS FOR THE VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN, AND THEY ARE UNABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF IT IS TRUE THE NHTSA SET THE VIN# PARAMETERS FOR THIS PROGRAM, AND IF SO WHY MY CAR, WHICH HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM MULTIPLE TIMES, IS NOT INCLUDED. IF IT IS NOT TRUE THAT THE NHTSA SET THE PARAMETERS, WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL LIABILITIES NISSAN FACES IN BLAMING THE PROBLEM ON THE NHTSA. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM, OBVIOUSLY, IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND BE AN ENDANGERMENT TO STRANDED OCCUPANTS.

NOR WAS I NOTIFIED OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM AS AN OWNER.

2009 MAXIMA WITH 87,000 MILES WAS OPERATIONAL THROUGHOUT THE DAY; WE PARKED AT A BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENT FOR LUNCH FEBRUARY 4, 2017 (WINTER; CLOUDY NO RAIN OR SNOW) OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE 45 F. WHEN RETURNING TO VEHICLE, CAR WOULD NOT START: STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND INTELLIKEY SYSTEM WOULD NOT FUNCTION; BLINKING DASH LIGHT INDICATED CAR WAS IN LOCK-DOWN MODE. HAD TO CALL TOW TRUCK - AFTER 75 MINUTES WAIT CAR WAS TOWED TO NISSAN DEALER FOR REPAIR (STILL WAITING). THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM & IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY LOCKED UP IN THIS VERY SAME CAR (THAT TIME WAS OCTOBER 2012 WITH 46,000 MILES ON THE CAR). THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM SINCE THIS APPEARS TO HAPPEN AT RANDOM; LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT AND IT DIDN'T HAPPEN IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION OR VICIOUS WEATHER. PREVIOUS REPAIR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I SUSPECT THIS REPAIR WILL BE QUITE COSTLY. THE CAR SHOULD NOT LOCK UP LIKE THIS FOR NO REASON. THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISMS APPEARS TO BE EITHER A FAULTY DESIGN OR HAVE PROBLEMS FUNCTIONING. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND HAVE THIS PART RECALLED OR REPAIRED.

THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS IT HAPPEN WITH OUT NOTICE AND COULD CAUSE HARM OR DEATH BY NOT BEING ABLE TO START YOUR VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS PLACED IN PARK AND THE IGNITION IS DISENGAGED.

THE YELL INTELLIGENT KEY LIGHT WAS ON. I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING. I CALLED TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP (AGAIN). THIS TIME NO LONGER COVERED. TOTAL OF AROUND $1500 TO GET FIXED. BOTH TIMES MY CAR WAS PARKED, AND OFF, AND THE CAR JUST WOULDN'T START. BOTH TIMES HAD I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED OVER 30 MILES ON A FLAT BED. I DROVE MY CAR .5 OF A MILE TO THE STORE GOT DOWN AND CAME BACK TO START MY CAR. MY GAS PEDAL WAS HARD AND MY PUSH START BUTTON READ LOCK. I SAW A RED BLINKING KEY SIGN. I INSERTED MY KEY FOB IN THE SLOT HOPING THAT FIXED IT AND NOTHING. I WIGGLED THE WHEEL AND PRESSED THE START BUTTON AND NOTHING. I TRIED EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK FOR 3 HOURS IN THE PARKING LOT OF HEB UNTIL I GOT IT TOWED TO MY APARTMENT UNTIL I FIGURED OUT WHAT TO DO. I GOT ONLINE AND SAW SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. I CALLED NISSAN DEALERSHIP SATURDAY AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED. THEY SAID THEY NEEDED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE SO I SCHEDULED. I ASKED IF THEY WOULD COVER THE REPAIRS SINCE THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON TO MANY VEHICLES, MAYBE A RECALL? THEY SAID NO, UNLESS I HAVE WARRANTY- I DON'T. TURNS OUT I NEED A NEW STEERING CONTROL. $1,500 LATER MY CAR IS BEING WORKED ON NOW. I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS FOR THE SERVICE ADVISORS. NOT A HAPPY NISSAN OWNER RIGHT NOW.

ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) WARRANTY EXTENSION. I AM A RECENTLY DIVORCED SINGLE MOTHER TRYING TO SURVIVE IN THIS TOUGH ECONOMY. I PARK MY VEHICLE AT WORK, AND I WORK NEAR AN AIRFIELD, AT FORT LAUDERDALE AIRPORT. IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHILE ON LUNCH BREAK, I PUSH TO START MY VEHICLE AND NOTHING HAPPENS. I WAS STRANDED. MANY OF MY MALE COLLEAGUES ATTEMPTED TO HELP ME, THINKING IT WAS THE BATTERY, OR A POSSIBLE FUSE, BUT NOTHING THEY DID COULD START MY VEHICLE. ONE SUGGESTED I CONTACTED NISSAN SERVICE TO EXPLAIN WHAT WAS GOING ON...AND BEFORE I COULD FINISH MY SENTENCE OF WHAT LIGHTS WERE ON MY DASHBOARD, THE SERVICE EMPLOYEE KNEW IT WAS THE STEERING LOCK COLUMN. I ENDED UP GETTING MY VEHICLE TOWED (ABOUT $70) TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND HAD TO LEAVE MY VEHICLE OVERNIGHT. I HAD TO RENT A VEHICLE FOR TWO DAYS AND HAD TO PAY LATE FEES BECAUSE I WASN'T ABLE TO PICK UP MY TODDLER FROM DAYCARE BEFORE THEY CLOSED. THE FOLLOWING DAY, AND WITHIN 40 MINUTES THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP OPENING, THEY CALLED TO LET ME KNOW MY CAR WAS NOW FIXED AND IT WOULD COST ME $1200!!! I'M SURE IT TOOK LESS THAN THE 40 MINUTES TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE AND I WAS PAYING OVER $400 FOR LABOR. I NEVER HEARD OF THIS MECHANICAL FAILURE CONCERNING MY VEHICLE BUT AFTER RESEARCHING, I AM NOW SEEING THE PLETHORA OF COMPLAINTS AND I AM SUPER DISAPPOINTED WITH NISSAN OVER THE FACT THAT THIS WAS NOT CONSIDERED A RECALL. I SHUDDER AT THE THOUGHT OF BEING STRANDED WITH MY SON IN AN INCONVENIENT OR DANGEROUS LOCATION. THEN TO FIND OUT THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO RECOUP MY EXPENSE. I HAD TO OPEN A TRADE LINE TO COVER THE EXPENSE BECAUSE I CANNOT AFFORD TO SPEND THE CASH I HAVE AT THIS TIME. WHEN RETURNING TO THE CAR IS WHEN THE PROBLEM BEGAN AND SENSE OF WORRY HIT MY FIANCE AND KIDS FACES. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND WE HAD NO CONTROL OF THE CAR NO MORE. I GAVE UP ON CADILLAC'S TO GET A NISSAN. SURE BELIEVE I MADE A BIG MISTAKE. THERE ARE OTHER LITTLE QUIRKS THAT HAVE BOTHERED ME. I'M ON MY THIRD CAR BATTERY. ANYTIME A DRIVER IS AT RISK IN A PARKING GARAGE OR LOT OR FREEWAY WITH A CAR THAT HAD THIS NOTABLE PROBLEM IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN.

AS A COLLEGE STUDENT WHO JUST SPENT THE MONEY TO PURCHASE THE CAR... I JUST CAN'T AFFORD IT. HOWEVER, I UNDERSTAND JUST HOW SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS THE PROBLEM IS. THIS WAS A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE FOR NISSAN AS THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS PART HOWEVER MY VEHICLE'S CONTROL UNIT FAILED AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. AFTER ONLINE RESEARCH I DISCOVERED MANY OTHER NISSAN OWNERS HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME SAFETY FAILURE ON THEIR VEHICLES. IT IS AN OBVIOUS MANUFACTURER SAFETY DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED.

THEY TOLD ME THAT THAT WITH PARTS AND LABOR IT WOULD BE $1,500. I RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND PAGES AND PAGES OF ONLINE FORUMS WITH PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I CALLED 1-800-NISSAN THEY REVIEWED THE CASE AND OFFERED ME NOTHING IN RETURN. NISSAN KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE; IT SHOULD BE A RECALL; HOWEVER, THEY ARE DOING NOTHING TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM. WAS GIVEN A QUOTE OF $900 NOT INCLUDING TOWING. CONTACTED CONSUMER AFFAIRS UPON SEEING THAT THIS WAS A COMMON ISSUE TO INSURE I WASN'T COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY ETC. NO WAS THE ANSWER TO THAT. I FIND IT DISTURBING THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND IS OK WITH LEAVING CONSUMERS STRANDED IN POSSIBLY UNDESIRABLE OR UNSAFE SITUATIONS. I AM A 2ND TIME NISSAN OWNER BUT AFTER HOW THIS IS BEING HANDLED THIS WILL BE MY LAST NISSAN VEHICLE. UPON SUCCESSFULLY UNLOCKING THE CAR, THE PUSH IGNITION FAILED TO RESPOND AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE KEYFOB WAS ABLE TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE CAR, EVEN SET OFF THE PANIC ALARM BUT PRESSING THE IGNITION BUTTON WOULD NOT MOVE THE CAR OUT OF "LOCK" POSITION. THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED FOR ABOUT 1.5 HRS BEFORE HAVING BEEN DRIVEN SEVERAL MILES. UPON DIAGNOSIS BY A LICENSED MECHANIC, THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK MODULE WAS FOUND TO HAVE FAILED. ON FURTHER ONLINE RESEARCH, IT WAS LEARNED THAT THIS PART IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO FAILURE AND IT IS COMMON TO FIND MANY 2009 NISSAN OWNERS OF SEVERAL MODELS (ALTIMA, MAXIMA, 370Z) TO HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, WITHIN AND OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY.

I DID NOT DRIVE THE CAR. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS THEN ABLE TO BE PUSHED BACK INTO THE DRIVING POSITION. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE TWO ELECTRIC MOTORS IN THE STEERING COLUMN WERE DEFECTIVE (HAD TO BE REPLACE) THE COST WOULKD BE $2,000. THE CAR HAS JUST 60,000 MILES.

AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE I SAW A LOT OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS, AND THAT NISSAN HAD ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. AFTER CALLING NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED 4 MONTHS AGO BUT THAT THEY WOULD ESCALATE TO SEE IF THEY WOULD COVER A PORTION. AFTER BEING STRUNG FOR THREE DAYS, THEY DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER ANY OF THE COST. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME PRIOR THAT NORMAL PROTOCOL WAS FOR CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CAR WAS WHICH THEY NEVER DID FOR, I JUST GOT AN AUTOMATIC NO!

DAUGHTER DROVE CAR HOME FROM SCHOOL. WENT TO LEAVE A COUPLE HOURS LATER FOR VOLLEYBALL PRACTICE AND THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY FROZEN. WE COULD NOT DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL AND THERE WERE 2 LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD THAT KEPT FLASHING. ONE WAS RED AND HAD A KEY SYMBOL IN IT AND THE OTHER WAS ORANGE AND SAID THE WORD KEY IN IT. THE CAR WAS STUCK IN THE GARAGE, COULD NOT EVEN MOVE IT INTO NEUTRAL TO BE TOWED, HAD TO GET THE TOWING GUY TO GO GET ANOTHER MECHANIC TO USE A SCREWDRIVER TO RELEASE A MECHANISM THAT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL SO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO "DRAG" IT OUT OF THE GARAGE. ENDED UP BEING THE STEERING LOCK WITH A COST FOR PARTS OF $684.87 - TOTAL COST WITH LABOR $964.76. WE WERE INFORMED THAT THIS PARTICULAR PART HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY PUT ON IT THAT WAS GOOD THROUGH MAY OF 2015. DIDN'T MATTER THE MILEAGE ON THE CAR, APPARENTLY IT WAS ONLY A TIME ISSUED WARRANTY. SO, ONCE MAY CAME AND WENT - YOU PAID FOR YOUR OWN PART. WE ARE CURIOUS AS TO WHY THIS WAS NOT MADE A RECALL VERSES AN EXTENDED WARRANTY SITUATION. WE ARE NOW OUT $1000 FOR SOMETHING THAT NISSAN KNOWS IS A PROBLEM, YET HAS NOT DONE THE PROPER THING BY ISSUING A FULL RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.

I MADE SEVERAL DIFFERENT ATTEMPTS FOR HOURS TO UNLOCK THE STEERING COLLAR MYSELF AND START MY CAR, ONLY TO FAIL OVER AND OVER AGAIN WHICH LEAD TO ME HAVING IT TOWED TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP, THE NEXT DAY. THE DEALERSHIP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE CAR AND TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED A NEW STEERING LOCK BOX, WHICH TYPICALLY DOES NOT GO OUT ON CARS LIKE MINE (2009 NISSAN MAXIMA). THIS SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURE DEFECT BUT I AM BEING CHARGED AT LEAST $1000 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, WITH NO FAULT OF MY OWN. WILL YOU ASSIST ME IN RESOLVING THIS PROBLEM?

WARRANTY IS 6 YRS/UNL. MILEAGE; WAS RELIEVED. NISSAN WORKED ON MY CAR FROM 7:21A TO 3:40P. TOLD ME THE STEERING COLUMN UNIT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY LAST YR. ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 5YRS! TOOK NISSAN 5HRS FOR A DIAGNOSTICS ON MY CAR SAYING MY BATTERY WAS DEAD; NEED TO SWAP IT OUT WITH THEIRS TO RUN THE TEST. MY BATTERY WAS BRAND NEW! 1HR. LATER, DIAGNOSED AS FAULTY STEERING COLUMN MODULE. CONTACTED NISS. CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND ESCALATED TO REGIONAL. NISS. GAVE ME A PRICE OF $1071 TO FIX. TOLD NISSAN I WOULD TRY TO FIX THE MODULE MYSELF AND HAVE IT TOWED TO WHERE I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT MY BATTERY DUE TO EXISTING WARRANTY. HOWEVER, TOWING WAS TOO EXPENSIVE AND FIXING IT MYSELF WOULD PRB NOT WORK. SPOKE WITH SERVICE MGR. WHO SAID THEY COULD CHARGE ME FOR SWAPPING OUT BATTERIES BUT WILL ONLY CHARGE ME $1027.98. SO I WENT TO THE CAR AND I TRIED TO START IT, AND I NOTICED THAT I COULD TURN THE STEERING WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT, AND ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK ISN'T WORKING. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH AN EXPENSIVE FIX THAT HAS TO BE FIXED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS THAT WE LIVE 2 HRS FROM THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, AND ON TOP OF THE LOCK BEING REPLACED, WE WILL HAVE TO PAY AROUND $200 TO HAVE IT TOWED. MY STEERING TILT STOPPED WORKING ABOUT A WEEK AGO (AUGUST 2013). THE POWER TILT MAKES A GRINDING SOUND AND WILL NOT GO INTO THE UP POSITION BUT RATHER GETS STUCK ON THE LOWEST LEVEL. I HAD TO FORCE IT BACK UP MANUALLY IN ORDER TO ENTER/EXIT THE CAR AND TO DRIVE WITH THE STEERING WHEEL AT THE PROPER LEVEL. I TURNED OFF THE COMFORT SETTINGS AND HAVE TRIED NOT TO CHANGE ANY OF THE OTHER SETTINGS UNTIL I CAN GET THIS ISSUE LOOKED AT BY THE DEALERSHIP OR FIXED. SIMILAR PART ON NISSAN GTRS WAS RECALLED, PART NUMBER 48700-JF00A OR 48700-JF00B, BEING REPLACED BY 48700-JF00C SAME PART NUMBER IS FAILING FOR NISSAN 370ZS AS WELL, SAME YEARS AND SAME PART NUMBER 48700-JF00A OR 48700-JF00B, YET THEY ARE NOT BEING RECALLED. THIS PROBLEM IS ALSO OCCURRING IN NISSAN MAXIMAS AND NISSAN MURANOS IN ALL MODELS OF NISSAN THIS PART WAS REMOVED IN MID 2010 DUE TO CONSISTENT FAILURE. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK MALFUNCTIONED STRANDING MY IN A PARKING LOT WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE AUTOMATIC LOCK MECHANISM LOCKED THE WHEEL AND DID NOT ALLOW EVEN ALLOW ME TO START THE CAR. ON THE MORNING OF 1/8/13 I DROVE MY 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA TO MY COMMUTER PARKING LOT, AND REALIZED THAT I DIDN'T COMPLETELY PARK IN MY SPACE AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AND COMPLAINED, WHILE CRYING LEMON LAW. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN ATTEMPTED TO HELP ME START THE VEHICLE WHILE OVER THE PHONE AND AFTER REALIZING WHAT THE ISSUE MAY BE, HE EXPLAINED THAT THERE IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA'S THAT HE BELIEVES THE COMPUTER MODULE IN THE STEERING COLUMN HAD GONE BAD. I ASKED IF NISSAN HAD RECALLED THAT PART SINCE IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE, HIS ANSWER WAS NO AND INFORMED ME IT'S GOING TO COST AROUND $750 JUST TO PURCHASE THE PART, AND WITH LABOR AROUND $900-$1000 TO REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS ISSUED ON THIS AND WE ARE OUT OF WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO IS CALL NISSAN AND SEE IF THEY WILL PAY OR SPLIT THE COST OF THIS REPAIR AS I POINTED OUT THAT THERE SEEMS TO BE NUMEROUS OCCURRENCES OF THIS TYPE OF STEERING COLUMN FAILURE. MY MAXIMA IS JUST 29 DAYS PAST THE WARRANTY EXPIRATION DATE. NISSAN MUST RECALL VEHICLE MODEL YEAR 2009 (NISSAN MAXIMA) TO REPAIR THE TILT STEERING MOTOR AT THEIR COST. THE REPAIR COSTS TO THE CONSUMER IS OVER $600. I BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND COULD RESULT IN IMPROPER STEERING BY THE DRIVER RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT/INJURY/DEATH. THANK YOU *TR

MY FAMILY AND I WERE DRIVING SOUTH BOUND ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AT 75 MPH AND THE CAR SHUTDOWN, IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND LOST POWER. LUCKILY WE WERE IN THE RIGHT LANE AND I ACTED QUICKLY TO TURN ON THE HAZARDS AND GET OFF THE HIGHWAY ON TO THE SHOULDER TO AVOID A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THIS CAR ONLY HAS ~16000 MILES AS WELL AS ALL OF ITS SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE IS UP TO DATE. AFTER GETTING IT TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP THEY INFORMED US THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND THAT EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD THE WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER IT AS THEY FOUND A LEAF IN THE SENSOR. WE HAVE NO WAY TO VERIFY THAT THERE WAS A LEAF IN THE SENSOR AND THE CAR IS KEPT IN A GARAGE AND/OR DRIVEWAY NOWHERE NEAR A TREE. WE WANTED TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT SO THAT IF MORE INCIDENTS LIKE THIS OCCUR MAYBE A RECALL IS WARRANTED AS NISSAN'S ENGINEERING OF THE VEHICLES COULD BE AT FAULT. HOW COULD A LEAF IN GET IN THERE? TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING LOCK UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE THE NECESSARY PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE IN A FEW WEEKS. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 40,000.

TILT STEERING WHEEL LOCKED IN THE EXTREME UP POSITION WHEN DRIVERS DOOR WAS OPENED AT APPROX 2 YEARS/52,000 MILES. TILT STEERING WHEEL COULD NOT BE LOWERED UNTIL DISASSEMBLED BY THE DEALER. DRIVER VISIBILITY WAS SERIOUSLY OBSTRUCTED, ESPECIALLY FOR SHORTER DRIVERS. POTENTIAL AIR BAG EFFECTIVENESS WAS ALSO SERIOUSLY DEGRADED. NISSAN IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT MOTORS (TILT OR TELESCOPE) IN SERVICE BULLETIN NTB09094. HOWEVER, NISSAN HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND REFUSED TO REIMBURSE THIS FIRST-TIME NISSAN OWNER FOR THIS SAFETY DEFECT. THERE IS NO CERTAINTY OF WHETHER REPLACEMENT NISSAN STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT MOTORS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME UNDERLYING DESIGN DEFECT AND WILL NOT FAIL SHORTLY AFTER INSTALLATION. THE TELESCOPE ADJUSTMENT MOTOR FAILED AT APPROX 1 YEAR/38,000 MILES. TOTAL REPLACEMENT COST FOR PARTS AND LABOR FOR BOTH ADJUSTMENT MOTORS WAS APPROXIMATELY $400+. THE STEERING WHEEL TILT AND TELESCOPE MOTOR STOP WORKING. I TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO HAVE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT I WAS ONE MONTH OUT OF FACTORY WARRANTY 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SHOWED ME THAT IT WAS A BULLETIN DATED IN 2009, AT THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT SHOWING THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE TILT AND TELESCOPE MOTOR. I'M OUT OF WARRANTY SO I HAVE TO PAY OUT ALMOST 1,500 DOLLARS TO GET IT REPAIRED. ITS NOT FAIR TO CONSUMERS WHEN PAYING ALMOST 40,000 DOLLARS FOR A VEHICLE THAT HAS ISSUES. IT'S NOT FAIR WHEN THE DEALERSHIPS ARE AWARE OF PROBLEMS AND NOT INFORMING THE OWNERS UNTIL IT'S DISCOVERED AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. IN NOV. 2009, APPROX 3 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING NEW CAR, IT STARTED INTERMITTENTLY HAVING HEAVIER VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL. SINCE THEN, THERE IS A CONSTANT MINOR PULSING/VIBRATION, WITH INTERMITTENT VIBRATION THAT HAS MORE INTENSITY. WHEN I HAVE MORE INSTANCES OF THE "HEAVIER" VIBRATION DURING MY COMMUTE IT CAUSES MY HANDS TO TINGLE. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES WITH THIS COMPLAINT - THE LAST TIME WITH A REGIONAL REP PRESENT. TO DATE, THE DEALER AND NISSAN CORPORATE CONSUMER ASSISTANCE HAS NOT IDENTIFIED ANY SOLUTION NOR ANY OTHER COMPENSATION. IN JANUARY 2009 I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA. IN APRIL MY INTERIOR LIGHTS, STEERING WHEEL AND SEAT AND THE HEAT ON MY DRIVERS SIDE SEAT STOPPED WORKING. I TOOK MY CAR IN TO THE NISSAN DEALER FOR REPAIRS, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS AND ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND THAT THEY HAD REPAIRED IT. TWO WEEKS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WENT TO GEORGIA, WHEN I GOT BACK TO MARYLAND I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE NISSAN DEALER FOR REPAIRS AGAIN AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR. ON MAY 19TH MY STEERING WHEEL STUCK IN THE HIGHEST UPWARD POSITION AGAIN AND ALSO MY SEAT WAS NOT WORKING, AND THE LOCKS ON THE DOORS KEPT LOCKING AND UNLOCKING WHILE MY CAR WAS TURNED ON BUT NOT BEING DRIVEN, ON MAY 20TH I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR REPAIRS AGAIN, THE SERVICE WRITER AT THE NISSAN DEALER LOOKED AT IT AND ALSO NOTICED THE PROBLEM ( MY STEERING WHEEL WAS STILL STUCK IN THE UPWARD POSITION AND THE SEAT WAS NOT WORKING), AFTER HE PLAYED AROUND WITH SEVERAL BUTTONS HE TOLD ME THAT EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE DOING FINE AND HE DIDN'T KNOW IF THEY COULD DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD LEAVE MY CAR FOR REPAIRS BECAUSE I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG STILL WITH MY CAR. I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG.
