My battery went dead, and I was trapped inside my car, there is not way to get out of the vehicle with out someone having the hidden key inside the fob, or lock smith, or break the window, this is a huge safety issue especially in extreme weather or hazardous situations. I parked my vehicle to get gas in a small town, and was stuck inside my car for over 30 mins, until I finally got someone to assist me,

This has happened on two different occasions. While driving the vehicle the alternator has gone out and there is no warning that there is any problem but you lose your throttle control and the car loses power and is unable to accelerate. The 1st time this happened I was in the middle of an intersection trying to make a left turn and lost all power to be able to move the car. Luckly no one was coming in the other direction, or I could have been involved in a serious accident!!! I had the alternator check and it was bad, so we replaced it. The second time this happened was two days ago I was doing 65 MPH on a four-lane highway and without any warning I lost power and could not accelerate I was able to pull to the side of the road, but m emergency flashers were of no use due to the battery was low because the entire car was using it for power. The car has no gauge or light of any type to warn you that the alternator has failed till you lose power and are unable to accelerate.

As with the current Nissan recall the car just shutoff. On two separate occasions, one at highway speed on a high speed heavy traffic road and once of a neighborhood road. Both times spontaneously and without any warning or trouble lights or indications of a problem. Vehicles was towed and serviced at a Nissan dealership.. Both incidents were extremely dangerous one to get to shoulder in high speed traffic and to exit vehicle next to traffic and the other at night in a dark neighborhood. Dealer was without explanation on cause so we dont know if the problem is fixed or not. Prior request #602941

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at an unknown speed, the passenger’s side air bag light flashed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the battery was reset, and the warning light disappeared. A few weeks later, the warning light returned, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the failure with a defective sensor inside the passenger’s side seat. Upon investigation, the contact linked that failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V521000 (Air Bags, Electrical System). The manufacturer was notified and informed that contact that there were no open recalls on the vehicle. The contact was also provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN I HIT THE GAS TO GO WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN THE CAR WOULD NOT GO. IT TOOK ABOUT 20 SECONDS BEFORE IT WOULD GO AND WHEN IT DID IT ACTED LIKE I HAD MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL WHICH I DID NOT. IT HAS DONE THIS NUMEROUS TIMES. I REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TWICE. NOTHING THAT HAS BEEN DONE HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN REAR ENDED SEVERAL TIMES DUE THE FACT THAT THE CAR STALLS.

I HAVE A REPEATED ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH MY CAR. AT FIRST, I THOUGHT MY ISSUE WAS DIAGNOSED IMPROPERLY BUT I WAS RECENTLY ON THE NHTSA PAGE AND FOUND OVER 20 COMPLAINTS THAT EXPRESSED THE SAME EXACT ISSUE I HAVE BEEN HAVING. THAT ISSUE BEING THE FACT THAT MY CAR, WHEN IN MOTION WILL COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ON ME AND GO INTO NEUTRAL. THIS WILL HAPPEN WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND FOR ME HAS HAPPENED BOTH TIMES ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE GOING 75 MPH. ONCE THE CAR STALLS OUT, THE POWER STEERING WILL ALSO GO OUT IN ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND THE ENGINE WILL COMPLETELY SHUT OFF AT THAT TIME. THEREFORE, YOU HAVE ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO ROLL YOUR CAR TO A SAFE SPOT IN ORDER TO AVOID A CRASH. THERE IS NO TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON, AS WHEN YOU TRY TO DO SO ALL OF THE DASH LIGHTS WILL COME ON AND THE ENGINE WILL NOT START BACK UP AS THE BATTERY IS DEAD OR CLOSE TO IT. IF YOU ARE LUCKY YOU CAN GET JUMPED BUT THE BATTERY BECOMES SO DRAINED THAT IT CANNOT EVEN HOLD A CHARGE FOR A MILES WORTH OF POWER. BOTH TIMES I HAVE HAD TO HAVE MY MURANO TOWED INTO A SHOP. THE FIRST TIME THIS ISSUE OCCURRED I WAS TOLD I NEED MY BATTERY REPLACED AS IT WAS DEAD AND THAT WAS THE CAUSE OF MY ENGINE FAILURE. THIS SOUNDED STRANGE TO ME AT THE TIME, AS THE BATTERY THAT I HAD WAS A LITTLE LESS THAN A YEAR OLD BUT I WAS JUST WANTING TO PICKUP A WORKING CAR AND PUT THIS BEHIND ME. MY CAR WORKED PROPERLY FOR 48 DAYS BEFORE I AGAIN, HAD THE SAME EXACT ISSUE OCCUR TO ME, WHILE AGAIN TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 75 MPH. THIS TIME, THERE WAS NOT ADEQUATE SPACE ON THE HIGHWAY TO PULL OVER AND I HAD TO CALL 911 IN ORDER TO AVOID A CRASH. AGAIN, I HAD MY CAR TOWED AND WAS NOW TOLD IT WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE ALTERNATOR, WHICH I THEN HAD REPLACED. I AM NOW WORRIED THIS ISSUE WILL REOCCUR AS PEOPLE ARE STATING THEY HAVE HAD THEIR ALTERNATOR REPLACED 2 AND 3 TIMES AND ARE STILL BEING PUT IN THESE SCARY, ENGINE FAILURE SITUATIONS

WITHIN 30 SECONDS SMOKE CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND QUICKLY TURNED FROM WHITE TO BLACK. THEN THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. IT WAS COMPLETELY BURNED WITH NOTHING BUT THE TRUNK LEFT IN TACT.

NISSAN RECALLED EARLIER MODELS ALTERNATOR FOR SAME SYMPTOMS HOWEVER NOT MY VEHICLE YEAR. SAME SET UP LOCATION AS THE 03-07 MODELS SAME PROBLEMS JUST NO RECALL ON 09 MODELS. CAR HAS POWER LIGHTS RADIO ETC JUST LOOSES ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AND IF ENGINE STALLS THEN REQUIRES BOOSTING TO BE STARTED AGAIN. USUALLY THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION - JUST DRIVING ON A ROADWAY. ONCE SHUT DOWN, YOU CANNOT MOVE THE VEHICLE AND HAS TO BE TOWED.

I WAS RUNNING 40 MPH WHEN I SAW THE "BRAKE" AND "BATTERY" INDICATOR LIGHTS APPEAR. AFTER LESS THAN 1/2 MILE AND WHILE TURNING RIGHT TO ENTER THE FREEWAY ENTRANCE, THE CAR JUST STOPPED RUNNING DESPITE PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL. I TRIED TURNING ON THE IGNITION AGAIN BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I TURNED ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS BUT EVEN THEY STOPPED WORKING AFTER A FEW MINUTES. I WAS SITUATED RIGHT WHERE CARS WOULD TURN TO GET TO THE FREEWAY ENTRANCE. IT WAS OBVIOUSLY AN UNSAFE PLACE FOR MY CAR TO GET STALLED SINCE CARS ARE TURNING RIGHT AND ACCELERATING TO GO UP AND TO THE RIGHT TO GET ONTO THE 680 SOUTH FREEWAY (AUTOMALL ENTRANCE). IT WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD THING THAT THERE WAS SOME OTHER CAR THAT BROKE DOWN CLOSE TO MY LOCATION. APPARENTLY SOME OTHER DRIVER HAD CALLED THE FREMONT POLICE AND, LUCKILY, 2 POLICE CARS WERE DEPLOYED SO 1 ENDED UP STAYING BEHIND MY CAR TO KINDA BLOCK THE OTHER CARS FROM HITTING MINE. THE POLICE WAITED UNTIL MY HUSBAND COULD GET TO ME AND JUMPSTART MY CAR. IT TOOK A COUPLE OF TRIES AND AFTER MY CAR STARTED WE TOOK IT TO PREMIER NISSAN AUTOMALL, GOT A NEW BATTERY INSTALLED, & DROVE TO WORK. THE FOLLOWING DAY, WHILE RUNNING AT 60MPH ON THE 680 S FREEWAY, THE "BRAKE" & "BATTERY" INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN. I WAS PRAYING TO GET TO MY DESTINATION AS I WAS SO SCARED THAT MY CAR WOULD STOP AGAIN AND IT WAS MORE DANGEROUS THIS TIME AROUND AS I WAS ON THE FREEWAY. GOOD THING I GOT TO WORK BUT, AFTER READING OTHER MURANO 09 OWNERS' REPORTS ON FAILING ALTERNATORS, I KNEW THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO BY THE NHTSA. THE PREMIER NISSAN WOULD NOT EVEN CHECK IF THE NEW BATTERY THAT WE BOUGHT WAS CHARGING PROPERLY. THEY SAID THERE'S A DIFFERENT FEE FOR THAT. I THINK THIS ALTERNATOR ISSUE IS NOT JUST FOR THE EARLIER MURANOS BUT ALSO ON THE NEWER MODELS, INLUDING THE 2009 MODEL.

I HAD IT TOWED TO AUTONATION NISSAN AGAIN AND AS I TYPE THIS COMPLAINT THE DEALERSHIP IS TRYING TO ARRIVE AT THE PROPER DIAGNOSIS. I AM ALL OF A SUDDEN IN FEAR FOR MY LIFE, HAD I BEEN ON THE EXPRESSWAY (I-95, SR-826, FL TURNPIKE, ETC. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED WITH THESE TWO SUDDEN STOPS IF I HAD BEEN REAR-ENDED. THE ISSUE WITH MY NISSAN MURANO IS THE LOCK ACTUATOR BEGINNING TO GO OUT. IT STARTED IN MAY WHEN THE KEY FOB BEGAN NOT WORKING. WE STARTED HAVING TO UNLOCK THE VEHICLE WITH THE KEY AND THEN UNLOCK THE OTHER DOORS WITH THE BUTTON ON THE DOOR. THIS WAS FINE UNTIL THE LOCK ON THE DOOR BEGAN TO FAIL. IT WORKS OCCASIONALLY BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. THIS IS MY WIFE'S CAR AND WE HAVE ONE CHILD AND ANOTHER ON THE WAY, AND SHE WILL BE USING THIS VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT TWO KIDS WHILE I'M AT WORK. WENT TO DEALER AND THEY KEPT CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS, ATTEMPTING TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY DISCONNECTED THE CAR ALARM, AND ASSURED ME THEY WOULD STAND BY THE CAR IF THIS HAPPENED AFTER 3 YR. THEY DID A TEST, WHEN I WOULD TURN MY LIGHTS ON AND HEAT THE BATTERY WAS DRAINING. MY SON CHARGED THE LAST BATTERY THAT WAS IN MY CAR AND IT TOOK THE CHARGE AND STILL IS, SO 3 BATTERY CANT BE BAD. AT NIGHT THIS WAS A SAFETY ISSUE AS I HAD TO STRUGGLE TO TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE CASE IN THE DARK. REPLACED BATTERIES IN THE FOB AND DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. ON JANUARY 22, 2014 I MAILED A LETTER TO NISSAN OF AMERICA ASKING FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF THE NEW FOB I HAD TO PURCHASE. NISSAN WAS UNABLE TO OFFER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FOB AS THE VEHICLE BEING OUTSIDE OF THE NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY. OUR VEHICLE IS A 2009 NISSAN MURANO SL WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE. AROUND NOVEMBER OF 2010 THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS BEGAN TO RANDOMLY FAIL TO WORK ON THIS VEHICLE. OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS THE MALFUNCTIONING DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS SPREAD TO ALL FOUR OF THE DOORS ON THIS CAR. I HAVE CONTACTED TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS AFTER HAVING LEARNED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON FAILURE ON MULTIPLE YEAR MODELS OF NISSANS. BOTH DEALERS EXPLAINED THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD LIKELY RUN $1200 TO $1800 TO FIX ALL FOUR DOORS. LIVING IN THE HOUSTON AREA AND HAVING A GRANDCHILD, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. NISSAN SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO RECALL THE VEHICLES SUFFERING FROM THIS DEFECT. OTHER VEHICLES THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR MANY YEARS NEVER SUFFERED A FAILURE OF SUCH A CRITICAL COMPONENT. THE PRICE DEALERS ARE CHARGING FOR THIS REPAIR IS OUTRAGEOUS IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT IT IS SO CRITICAL TO SAFETY. I THEN TRIED THE PASSENGER SIDE AND THOSE DID NOT WORK EITHER SO I THEN HOPED IN THE BACK SEAT AND UNLATCHED MY SON AND TOOK THE BABY OUT HIS SEAT AND COVERED THEIR FACES BECAUSE OF THE SMOKE TRIED TO OPEN THE BACK DOORS AND WINDOWS AND THEY DID NOT WORK EITHER WE WERE TRAPPED IN THE CAR AND I THEN TRIED TO KICK THE WINDOWS OUT HOWEVER, WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL IT WAS NOT UNTIL A BYSTANDER SAW THE RICKING OF THE CAR AND A FEW MEN HAD TO BREAK THE WINDOWS OUT WITH A CROW BAR AND A HAMMER..SHOULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED THE CAR IS A 2009 NISSAN MURANO WHY DID THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAIL. *TR

SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT I'VE FILLED THE CAR WITH GAS OR OPENED/CLOSED THE LIFT GATE. I'VE TAKEN IT IN TO NISSAN AND THEY CAN RESET IT BUT THAT'S ABOUT IT. IT EVENTUALLY GOES OUT AGAIN. I RECENTLY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DRIVE A 2009 NISSAN MURANO EQUIPPED WITH THEIR "SMART KEY". SIMILARLY, I ALSO DROVE A 2007 LEXUS GS WITH A "SMART KEY". I HAVE FOUND THAT BOTH VEHICLES CAN BE SHUT OFF AND EXITED WITH WHILE IT IS INADVERTENTLY LEFT IN THE "PARK" TRANSMISSION POSITION. ALTHOUGH A BARELY AUDIBLE CHIME RINGS, A DRIVER CAN EXIT THE VEHICLE AND IF THE VEHICLE IS ON AN INCLINE, IT CAN ROLL FREELY!! I AM ASTOUNDED THAT THERE ARE NO "NEUTRAL SAFETY" CONTROLS ON THESE NEW VEHICLES. STANDARD KEY IGNITIONS PREVENT THE DRIVER FROM RELEASING THE KEY IN ANY POSITION EXCEPT "PARK" ... NOT SO WITH THESE NEW "SMART KEY" CARS! I FORESEE MANY ACCIDENTS OCCURRING UNLESS SOME CORRECTION IS MADE IN THIS "OPTION". TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN MURANO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH AT NIGHT, ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE EXTERIOR HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT HAD TO MAKE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS BEFORE THE HEADLIGHTS RE-ACTIVATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES, BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE WIPER WASHER AND DIMMER SWITCH WERE REPLACED UNDER THE FACTORY SERVICE WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 609 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 1,350. UPDATED 1/5/09 *CN UPDATED 01/09/09. *JB

THE START/STOP IGNITION BUTTON ON MY VEHICLE IF ACCIDENTALLY DEPRESSED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN THE ENGINE AND ALL POWER EQUIPMENT. AT FIRST I DID NOT REALIZE I ACCIDENTALLY DEPRESSED THE BUTTON WHILE DRIVING, I TESTED IT SEVERAL TIMES UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES AND IT SHUT THE VEHICLE DOWN EVERY TIME. UNDER ALL DRIVING CONDITIONS BUT ESPECIALLY HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS MANUFACTURER DEFECT WOULD CERTAINLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS LEASED ON JULY 15TH WITH NO RESPONSE, I HAVE ALSO CALLED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS ALSO WITH NO RESPONSE AND I HAVE WRITTEN A LETTER OF COMPLAINT TO NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS WITH A CERTIFIED COPY TO THE CENTER FOR AUTO SAFETY IN WASHINGTON, DC. IN THE OWNERS MANUAL FOR MY VEHICLE THERE IS A PRINTED WARNING NOT TO DEPRESS THE START/STOP IGNITION BUTTON WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AS IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY. THIS INDICATES TO ME THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAS DONE NOTHING TO FIX IT AND IN MY CASE NEVER EXPLAINED THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN. IN SPEAKING TO THE SALES MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP HE ADMITTED HE DID NOT KNOW THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. *TR
