The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission started slipping. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be rebuilt or replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 216,000.

When starting my vehicle, it would shake and hesitate to turn on. While driving, It would hesitate when accelerating. When driving at 70 miles, the vehicle would hesitate then drop 3 to 4 miles below speed on its own. The dashboard would indicate drive mode then change to reverse mode then back to drive mode, then reverse mode continuously while driving. The car was also making a loud clanking noise. When I was at a standstill at a red light with foot on the brake, the car was jerking forward on its own. I was driving the car with my 2 year old when this happened and decided to take it to a mechanic who confirmed that it is a transmission problem as well as a broken axle on the left. I left the car at his shop and started shopping around for a transmission replacement which is very costly. My concern is, if this has been a faulty issue with 2009 Nissan Murano transmissions, then it is likely that this can happen again if I purchase a used transmission which at this time, I cannot afford so it is sitting at the mechanics repair shop until I either save money for a transmission or use the money to get a better used vehicle. At this time I have to take my mom to work and use her car so i can go to work. I’ve been doing this for the past 2 weeks and unsure as to how much longer I can keep doing this as our work hours are conflicting.
My 2009 Nissan Murano had a bad battery and starter, after replaced them the ABS/VDC/Slip control light were illuminated and ABS function lost. I searched online and found a lot of the Murano owners had the same issue by just replacing a battery then got these DTCs. At the end we found Nissan know this issue and issue a TSB for repair with customer's expense. They know this is factory issue but not recall it or even not notify their customer, it's safety issue and still need the customer to search it and repair with the customer's money (to pay their faults). My car hesitates then launches after a stop. It is the CVT transmission I assume. It is not safe when I am accelerating into traffic or trying to merge. Only 132,000 miles on the car.
This has happened on two different occasions. While driving the vehicle the alternator has gone out and there is no warning that there is any problem but you lose your throttle control and the car loses power and is unable to accelerate. The 1st time this happened I was in the middle of an intersection trying to make a left turn and lost all power to be able to move the car. Luckly no one was coming in the other direction, or I could have been involved in a serious accident!!! I had the alternator check and it was bad, so we replaced it. The second time this happened was two days ago I was doing 65 MPH on a four-lane highway and without any warning I lost power and could not accelerate I was able to pull to the side of the road, but m emergency flashers were of no use due to the battery was low because the entire car was using it for power. The car has no gauge or light of any type to warn you that the alternator has failed till you lose power and are unable to accelerate.

The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with the axel seals, rear differential axle seal, and left TPMS sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 139,000.

While trying to make a turn in a busy intersection, the car stall and loses power it goes into a limp mode. The car slowly limps out of traffic to the side. Note VDC off and 2 red - neg sign brake light is on. Turn the ignition off for a few minutes. Turn ignition back on and no problem. The car starts up no problem. I had the brakes check out and no issues. I took to Nissan dealership . They said it is the alternator. I had new alternator put in 6 months ago. Took back to the company who put the alternator on He said it is working. They said this car notorious for the CVT transmission issues. This problem has happen twice in traffic. This is not safe.... I am afraid to drive this car.
As with the current Nissan recall the car just shutoff. On two separate occasions, one at highway speed on a high speed heavy traffic road and once of a neighborhood road. Both times spontaneously and without any warning or trouble lights or indications of a problem. Vehicles was towed and serviced at a Nissan dealership.. Both incidents were extremely dangerous one to get to shoulder in high speed traffic and to exit vehicle next to traffic and the other at night in a dark neighborhood. Dealer was without explanation on cause so we dont know if the problem is fixed or not. Prior request #602941
When stopped at stop lights or even a stop sign & it's my time to go my vehicle will "creep" at a snail's pace regardless of my position on the gas petal, then all of a sudden jerk & take off fast. On 2 occasions my vehicle would not even go when the turn light went to green & I quickly shifted to "L" where it did take off & the rooms jumped to 5000 & after getting out of heavy traffic I put it back in Drive. This issue occurs randomly & I've had a verbal conversation with a mechanic in my family that says, my 2009 Murano has a CVT transmission, they are very costly to replace. I only have 159,000 miles on my Murano & I drive my Autistic grandson to school & home only. I'm only bringing this to your attention to fund out if I'm the only person that has had issues with the CVT transmission bc a $4-$5000 new transmission is impossible for us. This has been happening off & on for about 6 months.
THE VEHICLE HAD CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE HAS ALL REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND LESS THAN 60,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. WE HAD TO MAKE EVASIVE MANEUVERS TO AVOID BEING IN A COLLISION.

TRANSFER CASE IS LEAKING. KNOWN DEFECT IN NISSAN MURANOS. THE DEALERSHIP RESEALED THE TRANSFER CASE THE FIRST TIME ($2000 +). TWO WEEKS LATER IT STARTED LAKING AGAIN. THEY FIXED IT FOR FREE UNDER REPAIR WARRANTY. TWO MORE WEEKS LATER, THEY ARE SAYING I NEED A NEW TRANSFER CASE WHICH WILL COST $4000. NISSAN NEEDS TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR MANUFACTURER DEFECT.

THE CVT TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONS AND VEHICLE ENTERS FAILSAFE 'LIMP' MODE WHEN TRANSMISSION IS AT PEAK OPERATING TEMPERATURE (APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES OF STOP AND GO ACCELERATION FROM A COLD VEHICLE). VEHICLE BEGINS TO SHUTTER (SHAKE) WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE SHUTTERING DURING ACCELERATION PROGRESSIVELY GETS WORSE TO A POINT THE VEHICLE ENTERS A FAILSAFE 'LIMP' MODE. ONCE IN FAILSAFE 'LIMP' MODE YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO ACCELERATION AND VEHICLE TRAVELS APPROXIMATELY 2-3 MPH. THIS PUTS THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE IN GRAVE DANGER, ESPECIALLY IN SCENARIOS WHILE IN A LEFT TURN LANE WITH 50 MPH ONCOMING TRAFFIC THAT I HAD TO EXPERIENCE WITH MY FAMILY. THE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE REQUIRES A NEW TRANSMISSION; $5,000. THE VEHICLE HAS A CURRENT MARKET VALUE OF $5,000. NISSAN WILL NOT COVER THE COSTS OF THE REPAIR. CVT TRANSMISSION DEFECTS ARE A KNOWN PROBLEM AND NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THE CVT TRANSMISSION TO 10 YEARS / 120,000 MILES. MY VEHICLE IS 11.5 YEARS OLD AND AT 127,000 MILES AND THEY WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIR.

BROUGHT MY VEHICLE INTO THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE TRANSFER CASE IS LEAKING. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE 2009-2014 MURANO AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ACROSS SEVERAL FORUMS. THE TRANSFER CASE CANNOT BE REPAIRED AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. THE COST TO REPLACE IT BY THE DEALERSHIP IS $3500 AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS THAT IF THE TRANSFER CASE IS NOT FIXED THE ENGINE WILL SEIZE UP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WHILE I'M LUCKY THIS HASN'T HAPPENED TO ME, IT DOESN'T MEAN IT WON'T HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS UNAWARE THAT THEIR TRANSFER CASE IS LEAKING. THIS REPAIR IS ALSO NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THERE ARE REPORTS THAT THIS ISSUE IS ONLY WITH TRANSFER CASES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 2009 AND 2014, WHICH SOUNDS LIKE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. GIVE THAT WHY IS THIS NOT REQUIRED TO BE COVERED UNDER A RECALL, OR AT THE VERY LEAST THE WARRANTY? SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO FORCE THE MANUFACTURER TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE PARTS.

IN OTHER INSTANCES, THE VEHICLE HAD A DRASTIC REDUCTION IN SPEED. THE ALTERNATOR ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED MORE THAN TWICE, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS EXCLUDED FROM NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V319000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED THE SAME FAILURE AS THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V916000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC), BUT A REPAIR APPOINTMENT HAD NOT BEEN SCHEDULED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. MY 2009 NISSAN MURANO WHICH I BOUGHT IN FEBRUARY 2014 FROM AN AUTHORIZED NISSAN DEALER (MORRIE'S MINNETONKA) HAD A FAULTY CVT TRANSMISSION. AFTER DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM FOR ALMOST A YEAR, WHICH INCLUDES BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: LOSS OF POWER, TRANSMISSION JERKING, TRANSMISSION SLIPPING, CVT COOLANT HOSE LEAKS AND FAILURES WHICH PUT MY LIFE, MY KIDS LIFE IN DANGER MULTIPLE TIMES. I REACHED OUT TO NISSAN USA WARRANTY OFFICE NUMEROUS TIMES FOR NO AVAIL AND ULTIMATELY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $4,299. NISSAN REFUSED TO COVER THE COST AND COMPLETELY IGNORED MY REPEATED PLEA FOR A RESPONSE. I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THE ISSUE TO THE NHTSA HOPING YOU WILL 1) CONDUCT THE FAULTY CVT TRANSMISSIONS OF NISSAN. I LEARNT THAT THERE ARE PENDING LEGAL ISSUES THAT THE COMPANY IS DEALING WITH AS OF TODAY AND I AM HAPPY TO HAND OVER ALL MY VEHICLE INSPECTION DOCUMENTS IN ORDER TO HELP THE INVESTIGATION. 2) AS I MENTIONED EARLIER THE CVT TRANSMISSION ISSUE AND SUDDEN STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY REPEATEDLY PUT MY LIFE, MY KIDS LIFE AND OTHER DRIVERS AT RISK. IN JUNE 2018, MY CAR STARTED STOPPING SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC WHO CHANGE MY ALTERNATOR. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I CHANGE MY BRAKES, STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER , THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR HAS ABS MODULE RECALLED AND THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. THEY CHANGED IT. THE CAR COULD NOT DRIVE OUT OF THE PARKING LOT THUS, I RETURNED IT TO THE SERVICE CENTER. THEY DIAGANED TRANSMISSION ISSUES, THEY SAID THEY FIX IT. THE CAR STOP WITHIN THREE BLOCKS AND ON THE HIGHWAY. I RETURNED IT BACK TO NISSAN SERVICE CENTER, NOW, THEY SAID IT'S THE ALTERNATOR. I INFORMED THEM THAT I HAVE THE ALTERNATOR CHANGED LEST THAN 30 DAYS. THE CAR IS A LEMON BECAUSE OF THE ABS MODULE THAT NISSAN CANOT FIX OR UNABLE TO FIX. EVERY TIME THAT CAR IS IN MOTION, THE ABS LIGHT TURN ON AND THE CAR STOPS ABRUTLY. I HAVE TWO TEENAGERS WHO DRIVES MY CAR TO GO TO SCHOOL. IT BECOMES A HAZARD AND UNSAFE DUE TO THE RECALL OF THE ABS MODULE .

I HAVE LESS THAN 57,000 MILES ON MY 2009 MURANO. AT 46,000 MILES, I HAD TO HAVE MY FAILED TRANSMISSION REPLACED AND I'M HAVING ISSUES AGAIN WITH IT SLIPPING INTO LOW GEAR. THE DEALERSHIP COULDN'T REPRODUCE THE ISSUE, SO NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO ADDRESS IT. I HAD TO TAKE MY MURANO IN FOR SERVICE AGAIN BECAUSE I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT WHEN MY BRAKES DIDN'T WORK AT 30 MPH AND I HAD TO QUICKLY CHANGE LANES TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. THERE WASN'T ANY BRAKE PRESSURE AND I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDDLE TO THE FLOOR BEFORE IT STOPPED.

THE LOSS OF SPEED AND/OR THE ABILITY OF NOT GAINING SPEED ALONG WITH THE NORMAL FLOW OF TRAFFIC COULD CAUSE SOMEBODY TO HIT AND/OR KILL ME! THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, TODAY I WAS LUCKY BY NOT GETTING HIT. A FEW WEEKS AGO, BECAUSE THE SYMPTOMS HAPPENS MORE CONSISTENTLY NISSAN DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A TRANSMISSION (CVT) ISSUE. ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE ADMITTED A DEFECT IN THEIR CVT TRANSMISSIONS, THEY REFUSED TO REPAIR IT BECAUSE IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAVE RECORDS WHICH SHOWS I TOOK MY CAR TO SEVERAL DIFFERENT NISSAN SERVICE DEPTS. COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, JUST DOING A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH, I DISCOVERED NISSAN'S CVT HAS ALLEGEDLY BEEN BLAMED FOR A COUPLE OF DEATHS AND MULTIPLE CAR ACCIDENTS. IT'S A HAZARD TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE, AND NISSAN SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE ALL OF THESE TRANSMISSIONS. AS I SAID PREVIOUSLY, TODAY I WAS LUCKY, THE NEXT TIME I MAY NOT BE! ATTACHED: UNFORTUNATELY AFTER MY NEAR MISS INCIDENT THIS MORNING THE OTHER DRIVER KEPT GOING SO I DON'T HAVE ANY DOCUMENTATION TO PROVIDE. BUT I DID ATTACHED AN ONGOING EMAIL THREAD I HAVE WITH NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHICH BASICALLY CAPTURES THE COMMUNICATION I'VE HAD WITH THEM UP UNTIL THIS POINT. THE ONLY THING MISSING IS ON JULY 5, 2017 I RECEIVED A CALL FROM WADE (NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS) STATING THEY STILL ARE NOT GOING TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION.

AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR 2-17-17, I BEGAN HAVE DELAYED ACCELERATION WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC FROM A FULL STOP OR AFTER COMING TO A NEAR STOP. THIS HAPPENED OCCASIONALLY AT FIRST, BUT HAS BECOME MORE AND MORE REGULAR. I HAVE OWNED TWO NISSAN VEHICLES. THE FIRST NISSAN I OWNED WAS AN 08 ALTIMA THAT HAD A TRANSMISSION ISSUE AT 25,000 MILES. MY CURRENT NISSAN IS AN 09 MURANO. THIS VEHICLES TRANSMISSION STARTED TO MAKE NOISE AT 116,000 MILES. AT THE TIME I BROUGHT IT INTO A SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT NISSAN HAS A LOT OF TRANSMISSION ISSUES. MY HUSBAND FOUND ON THE NISSAN SITE THAT DUE TO ISSUES THEY HAD WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION THEY EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY FROM 60,000 MILES TO 120,000 MILES. WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS. I IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT MY CAR INTO NISSAN AND HAD THEM LOOK AT IT. THEY SAID MY TRANSMISSION WAS BAD AND NEVER MENTIONED THE WARRANTY. I CALLED NISSAN OF NORTH AMERICA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AND HAD MY CASE REVIEWED. THEY ADVISED ME THAT THERE WASN'T A RECALL BUT ONLY A WARRANTY EXTENSION. THEY OFFERED TO PAY 50% SINCE I WAS NOW AT 123,000 MILES. I LET THEM KNOW I HAD DOCUMENTATION SHOWING I HAD THE ISSUE PRIOR BUT THEY HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING FURTHER.

I WAS ALSO INFORMED BY A NISSAN ACE CERTIFIED TECH THAT THE FAULTY TRANSFER CASE IS A FACTORY DEFECT, AND THERE WERE REVISIONS MADE ON THE TRANSFER CASE ON MARCH 24, 2014; THEREFORE, THE NEWER, REVISED TRANSFER CASE "SHOULD NOT" FAIL AGAIN. WELL, AFTER UNSUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE LOCAL NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT, I CONTACTED CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO REQUEST A PARTIAL GOOD-WILL PAYMENT (AT LEAST PAY FOR THE PARTS SINCE IT'S SUCH A COMMON ISSUE AND A DESIGN DEFECT AND I'LL PAY FOR THE LABOR), BUT THEY HAVE REFUSED. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN LATER INFORMED ME THAT THE TRANSFER CASE WAS LEAKING FLUID AND WAS BLOWING ONTO THE EXHAUST PIPE AND UNDER CARRIAGE. THEY SAID THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THE BURNT RUBBER SMELL, NOT A DRIVE BELT. THE WARRANTY FOR THIS COMPONENT EXPIRED AT 60,000 MILES. I WAS CHARGED APPROX. $1700 FOR THIS REPAIR BEFORE DISCOUNTS. I ASKED THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN IF THIS IS A COMMON REPAIR, HE SAID, "YES, WE DO A LOT OF THESE." I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THIS REPAIR TO THE POINT THAT IT APPEARS TO BE A RELIABILITY ISSUE. USING THE FMEA APPROACH - SEVERITY IS HIGH TO THE FACT THAT WITHOUT GEAR FLUID THE TRANSFER CASE WILL CEASE AND CAUSE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. THIS TYPE OF FAILURE IS NOT DETECTABLE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF NORMAL USER MAINTENANCE. THE FLUID CAN ONLY BE CHECKED BY A MECHANIC FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND NOT FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT (I.E. DIPSTICK). OCCURRENCE OR FREQUENCY APPEARS TO BE COMMON PER THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN'S COMMENTS. I AM REQUESTING THAT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE. MY HUSBAND TOOK MY VEHICLE FOR A NORMAL OIL CHANGE. HE WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE HAD A LEAK AND IT WOULD COST OVER $3,000.00 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I DO HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND BETWEEN NISSAN AND THE EXTENDED WARRANTY I AM BEING JUGGLED AROUND AS TO WHO IS RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THE FACTORY WARRANTY WAS EXTENDED DUE TO THE MANY PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AND HAVE FOUND THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM ON THE MURANO FOR QUITE SOME TIME. APPARENTLY IF THE TRANSFER CASE RUNS DRY OF THE SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL IT HAS, IT CAN LOCK UP THE ENTIRE DRIVETRAIN AND RENDER THE VEHICLE UN-DRIVABLE. THE TRANSFER CASE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CVT AND MANY OF THE FAILED CVT'S VEHICLES HAVE HAD CRACKED OR LEAVING TRANSFER CASES. SINCE THERE SEEMS TO BE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF INCIDENTS AND NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE, IT SEEMS UNBELIEVABLE THAT THEY ARE NOT FIXING THE TRANSFER CASE ISSUE, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND WAS TOLD THE FACTORY WARRANTY WAS EXTENDED TO DOUBLE THAT OF ITS ORIGINAL OFFER DUE TO MANY PROBLEMS. I TOOK MY MURANO TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE CVT REPLACED AND WHILE I WAS THERE, THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE TRANSFER CASE WAS LEAKING ALSO AND WOULD NEED A NEW SEAL BUT IT WAS EXPENSIVE. I RECEIVED A CALL LATER FROM THE DEALER STATING THAT MY PARTICULAR VIN CONTAINED A TRANSFER CASE THAT HAD NO SEPARATE SEAL OPTION AND THE ENTIRE CASE WOULD NEED REPLACED FOR OVER $3,000. WITH VERY LITTLE LOOKING I SEE THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM ON THE MURANO FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND THEY HAVE CHANGED THE WARRANTY TO COVER THE FAULTY CVT TRANSMISSION BUT NOT THE TRANSFER CASE WHICH HAS GONE HAND IN HAND WITH PREVIOUS CVT'S. (IF IT'S ONE, IT'S BOTH) APPARENTLY, IF THE CASE RUNS DRY OF OIL (WHICH IT DOESN'T HAVE MUCH IN THE FIRST PLACE) IT CAN LOCK UP THE ENTIRE DRIVETRAIN AND RENDER THE VEHICLE UN-DRIVABLE. THE TRANSFER CASE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CVT AND MANY OF THE FAILED CVT'S VEHICLES HAVE HAD CRACKED OR LEAKING TRANSFER CASES AS WELL. CONSIDERING THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS AND AWARENESS OF NISSAN WITH THIS ISSUE, IT SEEMS ABSURD THEY NOT REMEDY THE TRANSFER CASE ISSUE, ESPECIALLY WITH IT BEING A POTENTIAL SAFETY CONCERN.
