WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY OR THE CITY STREET, THE CAR STARTED TO JERK AND THEN SUDDENLY CUT OFF AND LOSE POWER. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST FIVE TIMES AT NORMAL HIGHWAY AND FREEWAY SPEEDS IN A STRAIGHT FORWARD MOTION. WHILE ON THE FREEWAY, I WAS ABLE TO GLIDE OVER TO STOP THE CAR AND RESTART IT. THE CAR STARTS RIGHT BACK UP AND IS DRIVABLE.THE LAST TIME WAS ON THE CITY STREET, I WAS GOING ABOUT 35-40MPH AND THE CAR AGAIN JERKS AND THE ENGINE CUTS OFF AND LOOSES POWER. HOWEVER, THIS TIME THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP PREVENTING ME TO GET OVER. I HAD TO STOP THE CAR BY BREAKING DIRECTLY IN THE LANE NEARLY CAUSING CARS TO SLAM INTO ME. AGAIN, ONCE I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK I AM ABLE TO START THE ENGINE AND DRIVE AGAIN. AFTER THIS FIRST HAPPENED, I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR A TUNE-UP, OIL CHANGE, AND A DIAGNOSTIC TEST BUT NOTHING READ AS AN ERROR. I DO NOT DRIVE FAR DISTANCES JUST MAINLY AROUND TOWN AND HAVE RECEIVED REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON MY VEHICLE. I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR BECAUSE THE LOSE OF POWER DOES NOT HAPPEN CONSISTENTLY BUT IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN IT DOES AND CAN DEFINITELY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT/INJURY/DEATH IF SOMEONE IS DRIVING TOO CLOSE. I LOOKED UP RECALLS AND FOUND RECALL10V517000. IT SAYS THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2004-2006 NISSAN PATHFINDERS BUT MY VIN # IS NOT EXCEPTED. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS FOR THIS MATTER BECAUSE I DO NOT FEEL SAFE FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS WHILE DRIVING

AT APPROXIMATELY 135000 MILES MY PATHFINDER BEGAN MAKING A A GRINDING SOUND WHEN I TURNED MY STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE ACTUAL STEERING WHEEL WAS LOOSE AND COULD BE MOVED BACK AND FORTH. WITHIN A FEW DAYS I BEGAN HAVING GREAT DIFFICULTY WHEN MAKING TURNS WHILE DRIVING. I HAD MY HUSBAND CHECK THE STEERING FLUID, WHICH WAS AT THE RECOMMENDED LEVEL. I THEN TOOK MY PATHFINDER TO THE MECHANIC TO BE INSPECTED AND FIND THE ROOT OF THE STEERING PROBLEM. I WAS INFORMED THAT MY STEERING COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE NISSAN FRONTIER AND XTERRA HAS RECALLS FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE FOR THE SAME YEAR, BUT NOT THE PATHFINDER. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN WHO TRAVEL REGULARLY WITH ME IN MY VEHICLE. I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC, THAT EVENTUALLY I WOULD LOSE ALL STEERING CAPABILITY IF THE STEERING COLUMN IN NOT REPLACED I FIND THIS TO BE GROSS NEGLIGENCE ON BEHALF OF NISSAN. MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE HAVE BEEN MADE, AND YET NO RECALL?! THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, WHICH COULD PUT NOT ONLY MINE, BUT MY CHILDREN'S LIVES AT RISK. THE REPLACEMENT COST IS AROUND $1500. I HOPE NISSAN DOES THE RIGHT THING AND ISSUES A RECALL SOON.

I WAS DRIVING ON HWY AND I WENT TO GO AROUND A CURVE AND MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP I WENT OFF THE ROAD AND CAME TO A STOP LOOKING UP AT THE BRIDGE. WHEN I WENT OFF THE ROAD MY TRUCK HIT A HILL (IT HIT AROUND BY MY RADIATOR) MY TRUCK THEN FLIPPED AND THEN HIT ANOTHER HILL (HIT BY MY RADIATOR AGAIN) AND CAME TO A STOP. MY AIRBAG DIDNT NOT DEPLOY UNTIL MY TRUCK STOP MOVING. AND MY SEAT BELT DID NOT LOCK ME IN PLACE. I WAS SLUNG AROUND MY FRONT SEAT. I HAD TO TRY TO HOLD MYSELF IN MY SEAT WITH MY LEGS (PUSHING UP ON MY STEERING WHEEL) I HIT MY HEAD ON MY STEERING WHEEL, MY WINDOW AND MY ROOF.I HAVE A CRACKED FEMUR FROM MY STEERING WHEEL. AND 2 COMPRESSED DISKS IN MY BACK.. WHEN I REALIZED MY TRUCK WASNT TURNING INTO THE CURVE I HIT MY BRAKES BUT IT DIDNT DO ANYTHING BC MY TIRES CAME OFF THE GROUND AND WHEN IT STOPPED I WAS ON THE CREEK BANK.

HAD TO HAVE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED DUE TO IT BREAKING AND CAUSING HARD STEERING AND NO CONTROL OF WHEELS. BARELY MADE IT HOME. ALSO THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE FLUSHED AND BY PASSED DUE TO COOLER GETTING WATER IN TRANSMISSION. BOTH OF THESE ARE SAFETY ITEMS AND NISSAN DEALER SAYS NOT ENOUGH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS. COST ME $3400 IN REPAIRS WHICH HAD TO BE DONE DUE TO SAFETY REASONS. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION EACH TIME ON FREEWAY AND HAD TO STOP AND GET IT TOWED TO MECHANIC BECAUSE IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ANYWHERE.

IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A COMPONENT WITHIN THE STEERING COLUMN FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. I'M WRITING TO REQUEST THAT NHTSA INVESTIGATE A STEERING COLUMN ISSUE ON MY 2006 NISSAN PATHFINDER SE TO SEE IF THE ISSUE FALLS UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN & PASSENGER AIR BAG FASTENER CAMPAIGN #10V-115. THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT NEW IN 2006. THE STEERING ISSUE WAS FIRST REPORTED ON 9/14/06 TO A NISSAN TECHNICIAN. I NOTICED WHEN STOPPING THE VEHICLE A SQUEAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. THE TECHNICIAN WAS NOT ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. ON 6/03/09, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER NISSAN DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN FOR ADDITIONAL WORK AND AGAIN THE TECHNICIAN WAS ASKED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED ON 8/2/13, AT A DIFFERENT NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND AGAIN THE TECHNICIAN WAS NOT ABLE TO DETERMINE THE SQUEAKING NOISE OR WHY THE STEERING COLUMN WAS LOOSE. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT ALL THREE SERVICES MENTIONED ABOVE WERE COMPLETED AT NISSAN DEALERSHIPS AND THE SERVICES WERE WITHIN THE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE. IN LATE SUMMER 2014, I NOTICED THE STEERING COLUMN BEING VERY LOOSE. ON 09/11/14, I ALERTED A NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT AGAIN OF THE PROBLEM. AT THIS TIME, THE VEHICLE WAS 3,000 MILES OUTSIDE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE STEERING COLUMN ISSUE CONTINUED AND ON 11/7/14, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR MORE STEERING COLUMN TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT THE VEHICLE?S POWER STEERING RACK IS BREAKING APART. I SOUGHT A SECOND OPINION AND THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY IS FAILING. AFTER EIGHT YEARS OF INQUIRY THE ISSUE IS NOW DIAGNOSED. STEERING COLUMN - IT IS TOO LOOSE AND WHEN TURNING TO THE FAR RIGHT OR LEFT IT MAKES A CLACKING NOISE. IF NHTSA, DETERMINES THAT MY VEHICLE?S ISSUES FALL UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN & PASSENGER AIR BAG FASTENER CAMPAIGN #10V-115, THEN I WOULD LIKE FOR A LOCAL DEALER TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE TO ME. WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL I WOULD NOTICE A SEVERE GRINDING SOUND. UPON DETAILED ONLINE RESEARCH THE SAME OCCURRENCE HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL 2006 NISSAN PATHFINDER OWNERS WITH SIMILAR MILEAGE. AFTER TAKING MY CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION WE HAVE FOUND THAT NISSAN HAS ISSUED A SERVICE PART TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. MY REPAIR WILL COST AN UPWARD OF $1300. I FEEL THAT NISSAN SHOULD MAKE THIS ISSUE A RECALL AS THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT IF I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE CAR THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK UP AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE A HAZARDOUS ACCIDENT!! SOON AFTER PURCHASE WHEN I WAS TRAVELING BETWEEN 45 AND 55 MILES PER HOUR IT WOULD FEEL AS IF THE WHEELS HAD LOCKED UP BUT THE CAR WAS STILL MOVING. THIS PROBLEM EVOLVED UNTIL IT WOULD FEEL AS IF YOU WERE TRAVELING OVER RAILROAD TRACKS, THEN IT STARTED SHUDDERING AT ANYWHERE BETWEEN 45 AND 60 MILES PER HOUR. NOW IT ACTUALLY LOSES SPEED UNTIL IT FALLS DOWN TO ABOUT 30 AND THEN IT WILL KICK BACK INTO GEAR AND I CAN SPEED UP AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. TOOK IT THE DEALER WHEN I FIRST STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS A YEAR AGO AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THAT THE UPPER STEERING SHAFT COLUMN BEARINGS CONTRIBUTED TO THE STEERING MALFUNCTION. THE UPPER STEERING SHAFT COLUMN WAS BEING REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,300.

THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR A THIRD OPINION AND THEY ADVISED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SPIRAL CABLE KIT WOULD NEED TO BE INSTALLED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. I JUST HAD MY CAR SERVICED FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS ONLY A 2006 PATHERFINDER LE. THANKFULLY IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT WHILE IT WAS IN THERE THEY SUGGESTED TAKING A LOOK AT THE SHAKY LOOSE STEERING WHEEL. I KNEW THERE HAD BEEN PROBLEMS WITH IT SINCE YOU COULD WIGGLE IT IN ALL DIRECTIONS. STEERING SHAFT PROBLEM ON A 2006 NISSAN PATHFINDER SE - THE STEERING SHAFT WENT LOOSEN AND COULD BE MOVED HORIZONTALLY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING SHAFT BOTH UPPER AND LOWER WITH THE COUPLING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF SAFETY CONCERN. ON JULY 6, 2006 > 5 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT MY BRAND NEW NISSAN PATHFINDER LE. I WAS DRIVING WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO TIGHTEN. I WAS ABLE TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE DEALER AND BY THE TIME I GOT THERE I COULD BARELY TURN MY STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT TO TURN IN. WHEN THEY EXAMINED THE CAR THEY FOUND THE UPPER BEARING IN THE STEERING COLUMN WAS SHEARING AND HAD COME APART. I WAS LUCKY I WAS CLOSE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND NOT TOO FAR AWAY FROM HOME OR DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WERE I COULD NOT PULL OVER. THEY HAD MY CAR IN THERE OVER A WEEK AND A HALF WHICH WAS A BIG INCONVENIENCE BECAUSE THEY WERE HAVING PROBLEMS LOCATING THE PART AND I WAS GETTING A RUN AROUND ABOUT IT. I WOULD CALL AND THEY WOULD NOT CALL ME BACK FOR A DAY OR TWO. THEN I WAS TOLD THEY WERE AWARE THERE HAS BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THIS HAPPENING TO THE NEW PATHFINDERS AND THEY HAD MADE A NEWER PART FOR IT THAT WOULD NOT COME APART. SO THEY FINALLY REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN WITH A NEW ONE AND SO FAR IT HAS DRIVEN GREAT. DEALER REPLACED A FINISHING CLIP AND RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. DURING THIS VISIT TO THE DEALER, I ALSO POINTED OUT HOW THE STEERING WHEEL FELT LOOSE. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T SEE A PROBLEM. BEING THAT THIS "LOOSE" STEERING WHEEL WAS BECOMING ANNOYING, I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER. THIS TIME THEY SAID THEY HAVE HAD COMPLAINTS WITH THE STEERING.
