The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH and descending a hill, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floor. The contact stated that she pumped the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to respond immediately. The contact then used the gear lever to shift to neutral(N) and then to park(P) and the vehicle stopped. The contact then turned the vehicle off. The contact stated that prior to the brake failure the instrument panel lights had started to flash on and off. The contact restarted the vehicle, and the brake functionality returned. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but had gradually become more frequent. The contact stated that the brake failure and instrument panel lights malfunction occurred three times in one day. The contact had been unable to schedule an appointment with a dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,290.

THE VEHICLE BRAKES FREQUENTLY GO OUT AND START TO SHAKE AND MAKE A SPRINGY NOISE WHEN YOU PUSH DOWN ON THEM AND THE BRAKES LOSE POWER AND CANNOT BE APPLIED SAFELY. THIS MAY LEAD TO A CRASH AND NISSAN CANNOT DIAGNOSE THIS WITH CERTAINTY SO INTERVENTION FROM NHTSA IS NEEDED. I HAVE LEARNED THAT THERE IS A POSSIBLE FAULTY DELTA COMPUTER SENSOR AND/OR BRAKE BOOSTER THAT NISSAN CANNOT PROBLEM SOLVE VERY WELL. THIS PROBLEM COULD OR HAS LED TO CRASHES WHEN YOU CANNOT APPLY THE BRAKES AT SPEED. IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED. PLEASE PUT OUT A RECALL FOR THIS SO THAT WAY THERE ARE NO CRASHES THAT CAN INJURY MY FAMILY OR OTHERS.

THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE SO I'M OFFICIALLY REPORTING. I'VE OWNED THIS CAR FOR 16 YEARS. IN THAT TIME, I'VE REPEATEDLY HAD ISSUES WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM AT DIFFERENT TIMES STARTING IN 2006, BUT DEFINITELY IN 2009. I'VE BROUGHT IT UP WITH DEALERS IN BOTH SACO, ME & WAKE FOREST, NC. EACH TIME THEY CANNOT FIND A PROBLEM. FINALLY AFTER THE LAST TIME THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS A BULLETIN ABOUT THE COMPUTER NEEDING AN UPDATE. WHICH COST MULTIPLE HUNDREDS TO INSTALL. THIS INSTALL DEFINITELY DECREASED THE INCIDENTS OF MULTIPLE BRAKE FAILINGS WHILE DRIVING, BUT DIDN'T COMPLETELY FIX THE PROBLEM. I'M JUST NOW LEARNING THAT IT'S A FAULTY DELTA STROKE SENSOR IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND IS A KNOWN PROBLEM TO NISSAN FOR THE TITAN AND ARMADA MODELS. I NEVER GOT THE POSTCARD ABOUT THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, BUT IT WOULDN'T HAVE HELPED SINCE THEY NEVER IDENTIFIED THE ISSUE OR MAYBE EVEN HID IT FROM ME DURING MY VISITS. BECAUSE OF THIS I'M OUT OF THE WINDOW FOR THE LAWSUIT AND AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS. MY '04 STILL ONLY HAS 78,000 MILES AND MULTIPLE OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. NISSAN JUST HAD TO PAY 25 MILLION TO A FAMILY THAT WAS HIT BY ONE OF THESE AFFECTED VEHICLES, BUT STILL WILL NOT CLAIM THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE DELTA SENSOR AND BRAKE BOOSTER. PLEASE MAKE THEM FIX THIS ISSUE TO SAVE LIVES AND PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY KNOW HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR A VERY LONG TIME. THE BOOSTER CAN BE RESET AND THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY, BUT TO DO THIS YOU HAVE TO STOP THE CAR WITH THE BRAKES FLUTTERING AND NOT RESPONDING. THEN YOU SHUT OFF THE CAR FOR 10 SECONDS AND RESTART THE CAR. THIS USUALLY FIXES THE ISSUE, BUT IT CAN RETURN AT ANY TIME. USUALLY WHEN YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN DRIVING FOR AWHILE. STARTED BACK IN 2006, BUT GOT WORSE IN 2009. COMPUTER FIX LESSENED ISSUE, BUT STILL OCCURS AT RANDOM TIMES.

THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THE REAR AXLE SEALS ON THE END LEAKED DIFFERENTIAL FLUID SATURATED THE BRAKES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000. *DT*JB CONSUMER STATED IT WAS FOUND LATER BEARING FAILED ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT INNER AXLE. AXLES WITH BEARINGS AND SEALS ARE FACTORY ASSEMBLY. I WENT IN TO GET A TRUCK ON JULY 11TH... THEY HAD TO GET THE TRUCK STARTED BY JUMPING THE BATTERY THAT THEY SAID WOULD BE REPLACED. WHILE RUSHING US WITHOUT OFFERING A TEST DRIVE INSURRING THE TRUCK WAS SOUND AND MECHANICALLY STABLE. WE THEN DROVE OFF IN THE 2004 NISSAN TITAN AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH CAME ON SHORTLY AFTER. VRD ABS AND BRAKE AS WELL AS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE BRAKES THEN WENT OUT ON US AS WE REACHED OUT HOME. THE NEXT DAY WE INFORMED THEM OF WHAT HAPPENED, THEY SAID IT WAS JUST WATER ON THE BRAKES TO GIVE IT A DAY AND SEE WHAT IT DOES. IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND WHEN WE TOOK IT BACK THEY SAID THE MECHANIC WAS GONE TO COME BACK. THATS WHEN WE NOTICED THE CARA REGISTRATION WAS FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE AND STARTED TO WONDER IF THEY HAD TAKEN THE CAR TO EMMISIONS AT ALL. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS OM SINCE WE LEFT THE LOT. BEFORE OUR FIRST PAYMENT I SPENT $900 ON PARTS HAD ROADSIDE CALLED 4 TIMES AND REPLACED THE BATTERY. THE TRUCK DIDNT LAST TO THE FIRST PAYMENT. COMPLETELY LOST ALL BRAKING POWER. THIS TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC THAT TOLD US IT WOULD NOT HAVE PASSED EMISSIONS WHEN WE GOT IT BECAUSE THE HISTORY ON THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SHOWED IT WAS ONLY CLEARED AND NOT ADDRESSED.

BREAK SIGN APPEARS ON DASHBOARD WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. STRANGE NOISES COME FROM BRAKES AND BREAKS DOES NOT APPLY PROPERLY. IT HAPPENED MANY TIMES IN THE PAST AND I PULL OVER SAFELY, TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND TURN THE ENGINE ON BREAK SIGN IS GONE AND BREAKS START WORKING OK. THEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN AND AGAIN. VERY UNSAFE TO PULL THE CAR ON SIDE OF BUSY HIGHWAY, THEN TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND ON.

WE HAD NO DEFERRED MAINTENANCE ON THE TRUCK. BRAKES WERE MECHANICALLY PERFECT.( TWO MECHANICS VERIFIED THIS ) ONCE WE TURNED THE TRUCK OFF AND BACK ON THE BRAKES WORKED AGAIN. FOUND A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN LA FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE. CONTACTED NISSAN, THEY DENIED KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. NO HELP. TOWED THE TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY DENIED KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS CHRONIC PROBLEM. TURNS OUT ITS A DELTA STROKE SENSOR PART OF THE ABS SYSTEM. NHTSA YOU NEED TO ORDER A RECALL, THIS IS A PUBLIC SAFELY ISSUE. THERE IS NO WARNING BEFORE FAILURE. PLEASE PROTECT THE PUBLIC GET THESE TRUCKS OFF THE ROAD AND FIXED BEFORE ONE OF THEM PLOWS INTO YOUR FAMILY. SO SADDENED BY NISSAN, NEVER AGAIN WILL I TRUST THIS COMPANY.

I WENT OUTSIDE TO SEE IF THERE WERE AN BRAKE LEAKS OR ANY BRAKE ISSUES AND NOTICED NOTHING. I TURNED ON THE TRUCK AND THE BRAKE LIGHT WAS GONE AND THE BRAKES WERE NORMAL. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY DEALER AND SHEEHY NISSAN STATED IT WAS THE POWER BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER. NISSAN DEALER STATED THEY HAD A NOTICE ON THIS ISSUE. DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. I HAD IT FIXED - WELL $1,428.45 LATER. THE SAD PART - THIS TRUCK ONLY HAS 15647 MILES AND LIGHTLY USED. SEEMS THAT THERE ARE SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THE BRAKES ON NISSAN TITANS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. INVOICE OF THE SERVICES PERFORMED ARE UPLOADED. DID REMOVE PERSONAL INFORMATION PER INSTRUCTIONS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE.

AT THIS POINT AND HAVING REVIEWED SIMILAR EXPERIENCES BY MANY OWNERS AND NOTING THAT FATALITIES HAVE OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF THIS DEFECTIVE VEHICLE/DESIGN FLAW I WOULD APPRECIATE ADVICE .

INCIDENT 1: I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND APPLIED THE BRAKE. ONCE THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, THE BRAKE PEDAL PUSHED BACK AT ME AS IF THE ABS SYSTEM HAD BEEN ACTIVATED, AND THERE WAS A LOUD SOUND THAT I KNOW TO BE CAUSED BY THE ABS SYSTEM BEING USED. LUCKILY, WHEN THIS HAPPENED I WAS ABOUT TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPOT AND IT HAD A CURB. KNOWING THAT MY BRAKES WERE PARTIALLY COMPROMISED, I SLOWLY ENTERED THE PARKING STALL AND NEEDED MINIMAL BRAKING. I NOTICED THAT MY EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT, VDC OFF LIGHT, AND MY SLIP LIGHT WERE ALL ILLUMINATED. AT THIS POINT I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND WALKED AROUND IT LOOKING FOR ANY EVIDENCE OF A BRAKE FLUID LEAK OR ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. I DIDN'T SEE ANY BRAKE FLUID OR ANY FLUIDS OR CONTAMINANTS ON THE BRAKE DISCS. I RETURNED SEVERAL MINUTES LATER AND TURNED ON THE CAR AND IT PERFORMED AS NORMAL FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND DISMISSED IT AS AN UNUSUAL ONE TIME FLUKE. ONE WEEK LATER, I HAD A VERY SIMILAR INCIDENT DETAILED BELOW. INCIDENT 2: AGAIN, I WAS GOING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AT LESS THAN 10 MPH, AND WAS ABOUT TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPACE. THIS TIME, IT DID NOT START UNTIL I WAS PULLING INTO THE SPACE, SO I HAD NO WARNING THAT I WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME STOPPING. LUCKILY, I HAD A CURB AT THE END OF MY PARKING SPACE. ONCE I FELT THE KICK BACK I IMMEDIATELY PRESSED ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS POSSIBLE AND SLOWLY CAME TO A STOP A FEW INCHES AWAY FROM THE CURB. I THEN SAW THE SAME WARNING LIGHTS THE SAME AS BEFORE. DEALERSHIP VISIT: AT THIS POINT, I KNEW IT WASN'T A ONE TIME THING AND TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER LATER THAT DAY. THEY TOLD ME MY DELTA STROKE SENSOR WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE NOT HAD IT FIXED YET, AND DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS A PERMANENT FIX. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM, JUST MORE SIGNIFICANT. DEFINITELY WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE I FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS TRUCK AGAIN.

ON THE WAY TO WORK WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC, I LIGHTLY APPLIED BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN, I FELT LOUD GRINDING AND SHAKING AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. TRIED TO STOP THE CAR AND PRESSED BRAKE PEDAL BUT IT WAS PUSHED DOWN ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. PUMPED PEDAL NUMEROUS TIMES , IT STOPPED. THE SPEED WAS ABOUT 15 MPH WHEN IT OCCURRED AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE, IT LOOKED EVERYTHING TURNED OUT TO BE NORMAL, ACTS LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. CALLED NISSAN COMPANY, BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. I GOGGLED IT AND FOUND OUT MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE BUT NISSAN COMPANY DID NOT DO ANYTHING ON THIS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. IF I WAS DRIVING WITH HIGH SPEED, I COULD RUN INTO OTHER CAR SINCE BRAKE NOT WORKING MOMENTARILY.

ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, IT OPERATED NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE VCU CHIP AND THE VACUUM CANISTER MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50,000.

THIS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES BEFORE DEALER SAID IT WAS A C1179 DELTA BOOST SENSOR FAULT AND THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE BOOSTER. HAPPENED AGAIN TWO YEARS LATER SAME PROBLEM. THIS TIME DEALER SAID THE REAR AXLE SEAL WAS LEAKING AND LEAKING ON BRAKES ALSO FOUND THAT THE ECM ON THE BOOSTER THAT WAS REPLACED 2 YEARS AGO WAS NEVER UPDATED. REPROGRAMMED. PROBLEM REOCCURRED A WEEK LATER. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY, SIDE STREETS, GOING STRAIGHT, TURNING, DRIVING AT 60, DRIVING AT 10. NO RHYME OR REASON.

I BACKED MY CAR OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND PROCEEDED APPROXIMATELY 100 YARDS TOWARD THE ENTRANCE TO MY SUBDIVISION. I APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP. EACH TIME THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH ABS PULSING. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOP BEFORE ENTERING THE INTERSECTION. A WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED - I DON'T REMEMBER IF IT WAS BRAKE OR ABS. I PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. UPON RESTART THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS AND THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. I PARKED THE VEHICLE PENDING DIAGNOSIS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ISSUES DOCUMENTED ONLINE POINTING TO THE DELTA STROKE SENSOR. IT SEEMS THAT A PROBLEM WITH THIS SENSOR COMPROMISES THE FUNCTION OF THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM.

RECYCLING THE IGNITION SWITCH RETURNED THE BRAKES TO A SATISFACTORY CONDITION. AFTER MY WIFE DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME, I SCANNED THE ABS FOR FAULT CODES: C1179. I AM AN ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTOMOBILE TECHNICIAN WITH 28 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. THIS DEVICE MEASURES THE TRAVEL OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND IS A NECESSARY COMPONENT OF A VEHICLE WITH STABILITY CONTROL (NISSAN CALLS IT VEHICLE DYNAMIC CONTROL [VDC]). THIS VEHICLE HAS DONE THIS 4 TIMES IN THE TEN YEARS THAT I'VE OWNED IT. WHILE DRIVING, RED "BRAKE" DASH WARNING LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON. TRUCK'S BRAKES THEN HAD LIMITED BRAKING ABILITY & WERE HARD TO USE. HOWEVER, A WEEK LATER, THE CONSUMERS NEPHEW WAS DRIVING WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED AGAIN, AND HE DROVE INTO A DITCH. AT 55,000 MILES THE REAR AXLE SEALS FAILED ON MY 2004 NISSAN TITAN. THE SEAL FAILURE CAUSED A LEAK WHICH SATURATED THE REAR BRAKE APPARATUS AND REDUCED ITS HOLDING ABILITY. I REPORTED THIS TO MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALER AND IT WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS TOLD THAT AN UPGRADED REAR AXLE WAS INSTALLED TO ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PREMATURE SEAL FAILURE. AT 138,000 MILES THE REAR AXLE SEALS HAVE FAILED AGAIN DESPITE REGULAR FLUID CHANGES, AND THE REAR BRAKE APPARATUS IS ONCE AGAIN SOILED WITH GEAR LUBE. I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING A BRAKE / ABS PROBLEM WITH MY 2004 NISSAN TITAN. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AS I WAS DRIVING, THE BRAKE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND AS I ATTEMPTED TO PUSH THE BRAKES UNDER NORMAL BRAKING CONDITIONS, I HAVE ALMOST NOT BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK IN TIME. IT FELT AS THOUGH THE ABS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATING AND BRAKE PEDAL IS FLUCTUATING, VIBRATING AND GRINDING. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 7/17/14 THEY SAID IT WAS A PROGRAMMING ISSUE. I PAID ABOUT $100 FOR THEM TO UPLOAD A NEW PROGRAM. THEY TOLD ME THE NEW PROGRAM DIDN'T TAKE AND THEN TOLD ME THE DELTA SENSOR IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER WAS MOST LIKELY THE ISSUE. BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE ENTIRE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY MUST BE PURCHASED SINCE THEY DON'T SELL THE DELTA SENSOR SEPARATELY, AND THE COST IS $950 TO REPLACE. I CALLED AND FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS THE NEXT DAY 7/18/14. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ALSO ACTIVATED ERRONEOUSLY BUT WAS THE ONLY FUNCTIONING BRAKE SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE RESET. THE COMPUTER WAS RESET HOWEVER FAILURE RECURRED THREE WEEKS LATER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND OFFERED TO ASSISTANCE WITH THE CONTACT WITH THE COST OF THE COMPUTER RESET. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,771.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD, I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO AVOID HITTING THE REAR END OF ANOTHER CAR WHILE IT WAS STOPPED TO MAKE A TURN. WITHOUT WARNING, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE ABS UNIT CAME ON AS WELL AS THE "BRAKE" WARNING LIGHT. I HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE PEDAL ACTION CONTINUED UNTIL I COULD GET OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. WHEN STOPPED I CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID AND IT WAS AT THE MAX LINE ON THE RESERVOIR. AS A MECHANIC, I LATER CHECKED THE VEHICLE FOR CODES STORED. IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE CODE "C1179" INDICATING A POSSIBLE DELTA STROKE SENSOR/SIGNAL FAULT. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE WITH THIS TRUCK. LUCKILY, THE FIRST TIME, NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF ME. I REALLY AM CONCERNED THAT THIS TYPE OF FAULT COULD SERIOUSLY INJURE ANY OCCUPANT(S) IN EITHER VEHICLE OR POSSIBLY A PEDESTRIAN.
