THE WELD ON THE LEFT REAR SHACKLE THAT HOLDS THE LEAF SPRING IN PLACE RUSTED THROUGH AND THE LEAF SPRING PUSHED UP THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUCK BED CAUSING A HOLE. IN MY OPINION BASED ON MY INSPECTION THE WELD FAILED DUE TO RUST. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2006 AND HAD CORROSION PROTECTION APPLIED. THIS TYPE OF WEAR AND TEAR SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO A VEHICLE LIKE THIS. I HAVE TAKEN PHOTOS TO DOCUMENT THE DAMAGE. I AM GOING TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO NISSAN TO REVIEW THE ISSUE.

RIGHT REAR SPRING SHACKLE BROKE AT THE WELDS WHILE DRIVING ALLOWING THE LEAF SPRING TO BE THRUST UP AGAINST THE UNDER SIDE OF THE BED. BY LUCK OR OTHER I WAS TO BE TOWING OUR TRAVEL TRAILER LATER IN THE DAY FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.A CURSORY SEARCH FOUND A HIGH NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS OF BROKEN SHACKLES IN MODEL YEAR 04-07. SHACKLES APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN UPGRADED IN MODEL YEAR 08. THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE EASILY CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO SELF OR OTHERS HAD THE AXLE SHIFTED RESULTING IN LOSS OF CONTROL.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN TITAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHICH CAUSED THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO A SIDE WALL. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT HAD SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE ARMS AND NECK WHICH DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION SUGGESTS THE LOWER CONTROL LINK ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE SEPARATED CASING THE CONSUMER TO LOSE STEERING ABILITY. RECALL 10E019000 WAS REFERENCED IN THE COMPLAINT. I HEARD A VERY ABNORMAL CLUNK FROM REAR OF VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING WHICH WAS INITIALLY FOLLOWED BY VERY UNSTABLE VEHICLE DYNAMICS (VEHICLE SWAYED HEAVILY FROM SIDE TO SIDE). I INITIALLY THOUGHT I'D INADVERTENTLY HIT AN OBSTACLE OR POTHOLE IN THE ROAD BUT AT THE NEXT STOP I NOTICED THE VEHICLE WAS LEANING HEAVILY ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE (>2" LOWER THAN THE RIGHT). I INSPECTED THE UNDERCARRIAGE BUT COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING WRONG SO CHECKED TIRE PRESSURES (ALL FINE AT ~34-36PSI). NOT BEING ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE ISSUE, I ASSUMED IT WAS JUST THE WAY WE'D LOADED THE VEHICLE AND CONTINUED DRIVING (WE WERE MORE THAN 6 HRS FROM HOME). AFTER UNLOADING THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, I REALISED SOMETHING ELSE WAS SERIOUSLY WRONG BECAUSE THE SEVERE LEAN WAS STILL PRESENT. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH FOR "NISSAN TITAN LEANING" LED ME TO CHECK FOR A BROKEN REAR SHACKLE. INSPECTING THE FLOOR OF THE BED WAS ENOUGH CONFIRMATION THAT THE LEFT HAND REAR SHACKLE HAD INDEED BROKEN (HUGE BULGE IN THE FLOOR OF THE BED WHERE THE LEAF SPRING SLAMMED UP INTO THE BODY). NO LESS THAN 26 SEPARATE REPORTS HAVE BEEN MADE ON THE WWW.TITANTALK.COM FORUM ABOUT THE ISSUE (PHOTOS AND DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE). I WAS LUCKIER THAN SOME WHERE LEAF SPRINGS BROKE THROUGH THE BED FLOOR COMPLETELY (HAVE PHOTOS TO SUPPORT THIS). THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE A DEFECT AND INSTEAD QUOTED $480 FOR THE REPAIR. I HAVE SINCE CONFIRMED THAT NISSAN REINFORCED THE SHACKLES IN 2008 AND SUPERCEDED THE OLDER DESIGN (DAMNING EVIDENCE IN ITSELF). FOR THE RECORD, THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED WITH MY PREGNANT WIFE, 3 YR OLD SON AND FATHER-IN-LAW AS PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE. IT IS DAUNTING TO CONSIDER HOW MANY DRIVERS AND FAMILIES ARE AT RISK AS A RESULT OF NISSAN'S FAILURE TO REPORT THIS TO THE NHTSA. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A NOISE FROM MY BACKEND AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF MY TRUCK. I GOT OUT AND CHECKED TO FIND MY LEAF SPRING BUSTED AND STICKING THROUGH MY TRUCK BED. I CALLED NISSAN OF NORTH AMERICA AND THEY ARE UNWILLING TO OFFER ANY HELP BECAUSE OF IT BEING A USED VEHICLE. IT SEEMS IT WOULD BE MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO DO A RECALL NOW UNTIL WAITING UNTIL SOMEONE IS KILLED. WHEN I ASKED THE YOUNG LADY WHAT HAPPENS NEXT TIME WHEN THE OTHER SIDE GOES AND I GET INTO A FATAL ACCIDENT KILLING MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE? 2006 NISSAN TITAN. CONSUMER STATES SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE AND RECALL ISSUES *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE BOOSTER WAS DEFECTIVE AND HAS NOT WORKED PROPERLY, SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. IT WOULD TAKE EXTREME FORCE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT, AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER FAN MOTOR, ENGINE CONTROL MODULE RELAY, INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE ALL MALFUNCTIONED. ALSO, THE LOWER CONTROL LINKS THAT ATTACHED TO THE CHASSIS MOUNTING FAILED.

THE CONTACT WAS THEN INFORMED THAT GEAR OIL FROM THE AXLE WAS LEAKING ONTO VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND COMPARTMENTS OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED APPROXIMATELY TWO YEARS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN IN FOR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE CONTACT FOUND THAT THE SHACKLE THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE LEAF SPRING WAS DAMAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61000. ON A RECALL FOR A FAULTY ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE). THE VEHICLE STALLED AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN, HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER. NISSAN COVERED THIS ECM. DURING THE REPAIR THE MECHANIC NOTED THAT THE REAR AXLE SEALS WERE LEAKING AND RECOMMENDED THAT THEY BE REPAIRED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE COST TO REPAIR WAS ESTIMATED AT $750.00. WHILE WEB SURFING FOR THE REPAIR PROCESS FOR THE SEALS I RAN ACROSS MANY COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM WITH THE NISSAN TITAN INCLUDING MODELS FROM 2004 TO PRESENT (2012). BASED ON THE FEEDBACK FROM OTHER TITAN OWNERS, THIS IS A COMMON FLAW WITH THE VEHICLE AND A COSTLY ONE AT THAT. ALSO THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER WITNESSED REAR AXLE SEALS FAILING IN A VEHICLE. THIS WAS NOT IN ANY WAY DUE TO NEGLECT OF THE VEHICLE, OFF ROAD 4-WHEEL DRIVE DRIVING OR VIA AUTO ACCIDENT AS I DRIVE EXCLUSIVELY ON PAVED ROADS AND THE TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. WHILE DRIVING, HEARD A BANG, DID NOT NOTICE ANY DAMAGE AT FIRST. LATER ONCE THE TRUCK WAS PARKED AT HOME SEEN THE DRIVER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING WAS PUSHED THROUGH THE BED OF THE TRUCK. (HAVE PICTURES, IF NEEDED) THE PART PUSHED THROUGH THE METAL OF THE BED AS WELL AS THE SPRAY ON BED LINER. TOOK TRUCK TO THE LOCAL GARAGE, WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE ANY FURTHER THAN JUST A COUPLE MILES. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT HE COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS HAPPENED GIVEN THE YEAR OF THE TRUCK. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION HE RECOMMENDED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE BE REPLACED AS WELL, BEFORE IT BROKE ALSO, HE STATED THAT IT WAS VERY THIN METAL. THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS PURCHASED AT THE A DEALER AND I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS INCIDENTS WHERE THIS PART HAS BROKEN CAUSING SIMILAR DAMAGE. REPAIRS TO THE TRUCK WILL ALSO REQUIRE REPLACING THE TRUCK BED POSSIBLE. THIS TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN OFF ROAD NOR HAS IT BEEN USED TO HAUL ITEMS, IT HAS A FIBERGLASS BED COVER ON IT.

2006 NISSAN TITAN SE KING CAB 4X4 OFFROAD BIGTOW. THE DRIVER'S SIDE LEAF SPRING SHACKLE UNRAVELED AT THE WELD AND THE LEAF SPRING SHOT THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE BED AND CREATED A BIG HOLE. I CONTACTED NISSAN HQ TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THEY WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIR SINCE I PURCHASED THE TRUCK PRE-OWNED W/ 44,XXX MILES. THIS MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN REPORTED NUMEROUS TIMES ONLINE AND ON THE NHTSA SITE. IT SEEMS THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE WEAK SHACKLES FOR MODEL YEAR TITANS 2004-2007 BECAUSE THEY REDESIGNED AND STRENGTHENED THE SHACKLE IN 2008 AND UP MODELS. I HAD A LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACE THE SHACKLES W/ 2008+ TITAN SHACKLES AND PLUG/WELD THE HOLE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIAN WAS NOT COMFORTABLE PERFORMING THE REPAIRS BECAUSE ADDITIONAL BODY WORK WOULD BE NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE SHACKLE, WHICH WAS HOLDING THE LEAF SPRING, WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING FRACTURED FROM THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND PIERCED THROUGH THE FLAT BED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 94,000.

I CURRENTLY HAVE A 2006 NISSAN TITAN AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT AND HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY HAPPY WITH IT UP UNTIL NOW. LONG STORY SHORT; I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH NISSAN DEALERSHIP CLOSE TO WHERE I LIVE (STANLEY NISSAN) TO GET A RECALL DONE ON IT AS WELL AS HAVE IT LOOKED AT FOR MY ABS AND SLIP LIGHTS BEING ON CONSTANTLY AS WELL AS MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WHICH WAS ON BEFORE. A FEW DAYS BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT MY TRUCK STARTED DRIVING WEIRD AND DISENGAGING ITSELF OUT OF 4WD AND I WOULD LOSE CONTROL AT TIMES OR MY TRUCK WOULD STOP GOING FORWARD AND WOULD START TRYING TO GO SIDEWAYS, BUT THE RPM'S STILL WENT UP, BUT TRUCK WOULD NOT ACCEL FORWARD. IT ALSO STARTED MAKING A BANGING NOISE IN THE REAR, ALWAYS SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS THE PASSENGER SIDE. DROPPED IT OFF AT DEALERSHIP AND HEARD FROM THEM THE FOLLOWING DAY. SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT MY REAR BRAKE SHOES HAD BROKE AND SPUN AROUND IN THE BRAKE HOUSING AND DAMAGED MY BRAKE PADS, CALIPERS, ROTORS AND THEN MADE IT INTO MY REAR AXLE HOUSING AND DAMAGED MY ENTIRE REAR HOUSING AND DIFFERENTIAL. I AM A MECHANIC MYSELF AND THERE IS NO WAY THAT PIECES FROM THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IT INSIDE AN ENCLOSED REAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY. THEY TOLD ME I NEED MY ENTIRE REAR AXLE AND DIFFERENTIAL REPLACED ALONG WITH OTHER PIECES FOR THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY AND REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS. THEY TRIED TO TELL ME THAT ALL OF THIS WAS CAUSE BY BRAKE SHOES AND MY EMERGENCY BRAKE, WHICH I NEVER USE. THEY ARE QUOTING ME $4,200 FOR THE REPAIRS AND WON'T COVER ME UNDER MY POWERTRAIN WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL UNDER 60,000 MILES AND I CAN'T BE COVERED BY MY PLATINUM PACKAGE EXTENDED WARRANTY AS WELL WHICH COVERS ME UP TO 100,000 MILES. 2006 NISSAN TITAN 4X4, WHILE DRIVING ON TRIP WITH YOUNG DAUGHTER HEARD LOUD BANG FROM REAR OF TRUCK. OBSERVED ROAD FOR ANY DEBRIS I MAY HAVE HIT, FOUND NOTHING. PERFORMED QUICK INSPECTION ON SIDE OF ROAD & SAW NOTHING, CONTINUED TRIP & NOTICED BAD RIDE FROM SUSPENSION. REINSPECTED AFTER ARRIVING HOME & FOUND THAT ONE OF THE LEAF SPRING SHACKLES HAD SNAPPED IN TWO AND THREW THE LEAF SPRING INTO THE BED OF THE TRUCK CAUSING A HOLE IN THE BED. THE FAILED SHACKLE ALSO CAUSED EXCESSIVE PRESSURE TO THE SHOCK ABSORBER CAUSING IT TO FAIL ALSO. REPLACED THE SHACKLES AND SHOCKS BUT STILL HAVE A BAD RATTLE COMING FROM REAR END. AARG!!!! *TR

I THEN GOT UNDERNEATH MY TRUCK TO FIND THAT THE LEAF SPRING HAD BROKEN IN HALF AND FIRED A PIECE OF MY SUSPENSION THROUGH THE BED OF MY TRUCK. I BROUGHT IT TO BE FIXED TODAY AND THE MECHANIC SAID THAT HE HAD SEEN A LOT OF THESE WITH A BAD WELD AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN BECAUSE HE HEARD THEY WERE POSSIBLY GOING TO RECALL THEM FOR LEAF SPRING. I CHECKED ONLINE AND COULDN'T FIND A RECALL FOR A BAD WELD ON A LEAF SPRING, BUT I DID FIND THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME THING SO THAT IS WHY I AM FILING A COMPLAINT. THE SPRING SHACKLES ON MY 2006 NISSAN TITAN ARE DEFECTIVE. ONE BROKE AT AROUND 25,000 MILES AND THE SECOND ONE AT AROUND 40,000 MILES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN TITAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE IS A BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE REAR LEAF SPRING. THE LEAF SPRING APPEARS TO BE FAULTY AND NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST BRACKET FAILED AND THE CONTACT BOUGHT ANOTHER ONE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL AND NO ASSISTANCE COULD BE PROVIDED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. RIGHT REAR AXLE SEAL BLEW OUT AND LEAKED DIFFERENTIAL FLUID. DIFFERENTIAL FLUID LEAKING ON REAR BRAKE ROTORS WHICH COULD CAUSE BRAKE FAILURE, WHICH WAS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN TO ME. AT TIME OF FAILURE AT 8000 MILES NO SUSPENSION MODIFICATIONS HAD BEEN DONE TO VEHICLE. ALSO, THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL WILL SLOWLY LEAK AND CAUSE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL TO LOSE FLUID AND FAIL. NISSAN REPLACED SPACER AXLE (43070-7S200), BEARING (40210-7S210), AND SEAL (43252-7S200). AS THIS SEEMED TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE NISSAN TITAN, NISSAN SHOULD ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND OFFER A PERMANENT FIX SO WOULD NOT BE FACED WITH THE SAFETY ISSUE IN THE FUTURE. *TR

THE DRIVER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING SHACKLE CAME APART AT THE WELD AND THE BACK OF THE LEAF SPRING PUNCHED UP THROUGH THE BED OF MY TRUCK. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AND WAS NOT ACCOMPANIED BY ANY LOUD NOISE OR ANY INDICATION THAT SOMETHING HAD GONE DRASTICALLY WRONG. THIS IS A 4X4, OFF-ROAD/WORK TRUCK. THESE SHACKLES SHOULD NEVER BREAK, LET ALONE ONLY AFTER 3 WINTERS. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I ALSO FOUND THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING SHACKLE IS SHOWING SIGNS OF STRESS AND CRACKING. I HAD IT TOWED TO A NISSAN DEALER AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I CALLED NISSAN CUSTOMER CARE AND HAVEN'T HEARD ANY INFO FROM THEM EITHER. I HAVE HAD TRUCK TOWED OUT OF NISSAN DEALER AND HAVE OBTAINED SOME HEAVY-DUTY AFTERMARKET SHACKLES WHICH I PLAN TO INSTALL. *TR
