There is a safety recall campaign for the front coil springs breaking for all Nissan Versas registered in "salt states" The car is registered in a "salt state" and the the front coil has snapped. For a reason that neither corporate Nissan nor the local Nissan service center can explain, this car is excluded from repair.

THERE WASN'T ANY SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE SPRINGS THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE FRONT WHICH WAS DONE. THE INSULATORS MISSING MAKES A METAL TO METAL CONTACT WHICH WOULD MAKE IT WEAR OUT FASTER AND MORE PRONE TO RUST. WHY ARE THE SPRINGS BREAKING?

THE CAR TO MY KNOWLEDGE WAS FIRST SOLD IN FLORIDA. I BOUGHT IT FROM CARMAX IN VA. FLORIDA WAS NOT ONE OF THE RECALL STATES BUT VA IS. WE USE ROAD SALT HERE. IT SEEMS TO DO IT IN HOT WEATHER.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

WHILE DRIVING IN THE FREEWAY AND ON THE STREET SEVERAL OCCASIONS, MY CAR WAS FEELING AS IF IT WAS GOING TO DIE ON ME WITH LOW POWER. I FELT REALLY UNSAFE. ONE DAY, I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR WAS TOO WEAK, I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT DIRECTLY TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN CERRITOS BECAUSE I KNEW THAT WAS IT, I WAS GOING TO DEFINETLY BE STRANDED. I WAS THERE FOR ABOUT 5 HOURS AND FINALLY I WAS TOLD THAT THE COIL NEEDED REPLACEMENT. LESS THAN A YEAR, I WAS TOLD THE COIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. I RECENTLY SAW ON KELLY BLUE BOOK WEBSITE THAT THE COIL IS A RECALL. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND I AM TOLD THAT IT IS NOT A RECALL.

THE COIL SPRINGS THAT NISSAN INSTALLED IN MY CAR DUE TO THE 2015 RECALL HAVE, NOW, BOTH BROKEN AGAIN. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS REFUSES TO HELP ME WITH THE COST OF REPLACING THESE FAULTY PARTS BECAUSE THEY ARE 'OUT OF WARRANTY!' I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE SINCE 2012 WHEN THE FIRST COIL SPRING BROKE, PUNCTURED MY TIRE, AND ALMOST CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION WHEN THE MOST RECENT BREAK HAPPENED, I WAS TURNING OUT OF MY ALLEY WAY ONTO THE ROAD.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL AND THERE HAD NOT BEEN ANY DEATHS DUE TO THE MATTER. I LIVE IN THE KANSAS CITY METRO, ON THE KANSAS SIDE, LESS THAN 10 MINUTES FROM THE BORDER TO MISSOURI. THERE IS A CURRENT RECALL THAT APPLIES TO THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS OF NISSAN VERSAS (NHTSA RECALL 17V-637) BECAUSE THE SPRINGS HAVE INSUFFICIENT CORROSION COATING. THIS CURRENT RECALL APPLIES TO MISSOURI BUT NOT KANSAS. I DRIVE MY CAR IN MISSOURI ALL THE TIME BECAUSE OF MY PROXIMITY TO MISSOURI AND MY HUSBAND IS EMPLOYED IN MISSOURI. MY FRONT, RIGHT COIL SPRING BROKE ON MARCH 17, 2018. THE COIL SPRING BROKE WHEN BACKING OUT OF MY PARKING SPOT AT MY APARTMENT IN A LOT THAT IS RELATIVELY NEW AND FLAT, MEANING NO POT HOLES. A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD AND WHEN MOVING THERE WAS A LOUD CREAKING SOUND. AFTER PULLING OUT ABOUT 3 FEET I PULLED BACK IN AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. I FOUND A ROUND METAL OBJECT ON THE GROUND NEAR THE FRONT WITH RUST ON IT. IT WAS FLAT ON ONE END AND BROKEN ON THE OTHER. AFTER INSPECTING THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE'S WHEEL WELL I DISCOVERED THAT THE REMAINING PART OF THE COIL SPRING HAD SLIPPED OFF THE STRUT LIP AND PART OF THE COIL WAS PRESSING HARD AGAINST THE TIRE. THE APPEARANCE OF THE COIL SPRING STILL ON THE CAR MATCHED THE ONE I HAD FOUND. A MECHANIC AND TOW TRUCK OPERATOR VERIFIED IT WAS IN FACT THE COIL SPRING THAT HAD BROKEN. THE ATTACHED IMAGES ARE OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL WELL WITH COIL SPRING VISIBLE AND OF THE COIL SPRING PART THAT BROKE OFF. *JS

I HAVE 2 PROBLEMS. THE FIRST IS NISSAN CLAIMS TO NOT SUPPORT RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE BECAUSE IT HAS A SALVAGE TITLE. THE SECOND IS THAT I WAS NOT INFORMED OF A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE FOR OVER 2 YEARS. IN 2015 I HAD A FRONT SUSPENSION COIL SPRING FRACTURE. I THOUGHT THIS WAS UNUSUAL AND WENT TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND BOUGHT AN OEM REPLACEMENT COIL AND REPLACED THE BROKEN SPRING MYSELF. IN 2017 BOTH OTHER COIL SPRING FAILED AS WELL AS THE REPLACEMENT I HAD BOUGHT FROM THE DEALER IN 2015. AT THIS POINT I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THE RECALL ON THIS PART. I REPLACED THE FAILED SPRINGS WITH AFTERMARKET PARTS TO GET THE CAR BACK ON THE ROAD. I THEN SUBMITTED PAPERWORK TO NISSAN FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF THE REPLACEMENT PARTS. I WAS JUST INFORMED BY NISSAN THAT THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME FOR THE COST BECAUSE I HAVE A SALVAGE TITLE. I AM NOT AWARE THAT A SALVAGE TITLE REMOVES THE MANUFACTURER FROM THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS. MY OTHER CONCERN IS THAT I WAS NOT INFORMED ABOUT THE RECALL IN A TIMELY MANNER. I DID NOT FIND OUT ABOUT THIS RECALL UNTIL THE SPRINGS BROKE. I STILL HAVE THE LAST TWO SPRINGS THAT BROKE IN MY GARAGE. I ALSO HAVE PICTURES SHOWING THAT THE LAST SPRING NEARLY PUNCTURED ONE OF THE WHEELS WHEN IT BROKE. I HAVE CORRESPONDENCE FROM ALECE AT NISSAN THAT I CAN PROVIDE DOCUMENTING THAT NISSAN WILL NOT SUPPORT RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE IT HAS A SALVAGE TITLE. I CAN PROVIDE THESE EMAILS IF THEY ARE DESIRED.

WE TOOK OUR NISSAN VERSA INTO TYNAN'S NISSAN (780 S HAVANA ST, AURORA, CO 80012) FOR THE RECALL ON THE COIL SPRINGS. AFTER THEY REPLACED THE COIL SPRINGS ON OUR LOW MILEAGE NISSAN VERSA, THE BALL JOINT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FAILED WITHIN 10 MILES OF THEM REPLACING THE COIL SPRINGS FOR THE RECALL. WHEN THIS HAPPENED IT PUT MY AMANDA AND OUR CHILD IN DANGER. LUCKILY THEY ARE SAFE AND UNHARMED. JASON AT TYNAN'S NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT INITIALLY APOLOGIZED AND SAID THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING AND GAVE US A LOANER VEHICLE, NOW 3 DAYS LATER THEY ARE TRYING CHANGING THEIR STORY AND TRYING TO MAKE US PAY FOR THE DAMAGE THEY CAUSED DURING THE RECALL REPAIR. THERE IS NO WAY THAT A PASSENGER SIDE BALL JOINT WOULD COINCIDENTALLY BREAK ON A LOW MILEAGE CAR IMMEDIATELY AFTER COIL SPRING REPLACEMENT UNLESS THEY DID SOMETHING WRONG TO THE VEHICLE TO CAUSE IT. TYNAN'S NISSAN IS EITHER NOT DOING THE RECALL REPAIRS PROPERLY, OR THEY PURPOSELY DAMAGED OUR CAR FOR THE PURPOSE OF TAKING OUR MONEY. EITHER WAY WE FEEL THEY SHOULD NO LONGER BE ALLOWED TO DO RECALL REPAIRS IF THEY CANNOT DO THEM WITHOUT CAUSING DAMAGES.

THE PARTS FOR THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS UNSURE OF ANY FAILURE WITH THE VEHICLE'S SUSPENSION. THE CONTACTED CALLED SUNTRUP NISSAN (6000 S LINDBERGH BLVD, ST LOUIS, MO 632123) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PART FOR THE RECALL REPAIR WOULD BE UNAVAILABLE UNTIL SPRING OF 2018. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

VEHICLE EXPERIENCES KNOCKING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AT LOW SPEEDS/STATIONARY WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL CLOCKWISE AND COUNTER CLOCKWISE. THIS KNOCKING SYMPTOM IS AMPLIFIED WHEN VEHICLE TRAVELS OVER UNEVEN SURFACE AT ANY SPEED. WHEN BRAKING AT SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL SHIFTS VIOLENTLY IN OPERATORS HANDS. ROTORS AND PADS AS WELL AS STRUT ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. SYMPTOMS CONTINUED AFTER THESE REPLACEMENTS. TIE ROD ENDS AND SWING BARS WERE LATER REPLACED WITH NO POSITIVE RESULTS. THIS LEAVE THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE ISSUE IS RELATED TO THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. POSSIBLE DEFECT IN THE RACK AND PINION STEERING UNIT.

MY CAR WAS AT JONES JUNCTION NISSAN ON 1/31/15 FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT. WHEN THE TECH LOWERED THE CAR FROM THE LIST THE SHOCK COIL ON THE DRIVER SIDE SNAPPED. WE REPLACED IT AND THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE ACCIDENT. 8 MONTHS LATER ON 8/10/15, AT SOME POINT WHILE MY CAR WAS SITTING IN THE COMPANY PARKING LOT OF MY WORK BUILDING THE PASSENGER SIDE SHOCK COIL SNAPPED. I DIDN'T NOTICE THE ISSUE UNTIL PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT AND HEARING THE SOUND OF METAL ON METAL. ONCE THE CAR WAS TOWED TO JONES WE SAW IT WAS THE OTHER COIL SNAPPING. WHILE MAKING REPAIRS WE DISCOVERED THAT NISSAN HAS ALMOST 100 REGISTERED COMPLAINTS FOR THESE COILS SNAPPING. YOU CAN ADD ME TO THE LIST.

I DID NOT HEAR BACK FROM NISSAN CORP. CUSTOMER SERVICE UNTIL 08-14-15 NOTING THE COIL SPRING REPLACEMENT WAS NOT COVERED, AND THAT MY REQUEST WAS DENIED. I AGAIN ASKED THAT IT BE ESCALATED TO THE NEXT SUPERVISOR LEVEL FOR REVIEW. AS OF THIS DATE MY CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP.

I WAS ROUTINELY PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY, AND I HEARD A SINGLE PING/KNOCK SOUND, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A GRINDING NOISE, COMING FROM THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE CAR. THE CAR INSTANTLY BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. UPON IMMEDIATE INSPECTION, I COULD SEE THAT THE LOWER PART OF THE COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN CLEANLY. THE REMAINING PORTION OF THE SPRING HAD COME AWAY FROM THE METAL RESTRAINING PLATE, AND WAS EXTENDING AGAINST THE INSIDE TOP PART OF THE TIRE. THE METAL DID NOT PUNCTURE THE TIRE, BUT IT IS SIGNIFICANTLY INDENTING THE RUBBER. THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEABLE. FURTHERMORE, THE LEFT COIL SPRING, IN THE SAME RELATIVE PLACE, SHOWS SIGNIFICANT CORROSION, AND DOES NOT LOOK SAFE FOR DRIVING. COIL SPRINGS ARE EXPECTED TO LAST THE LIFETIME OF A CAR-- ESPECIALLY ONE WELL CARED FOR AND DRIVEN IN ALMOST IDEAL CONDITIONS, LIKE MINE. I HAVE NEVER HAD A COIL SPRING BREAK ON ME. THIS IS NO COINCIDENCE, AS THE SECOND ONE APPEARS TO BE FAULTY AS WELL. I CAN ONLY FEEL GRATEFUL THAT THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH MY FAMILY ON THE HIGHWAY. HAS THIS OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TIRE WOULD HAVE SURELY BLOWN OUT, AND I WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. NISSAN NEEDS TO STEP UP AND RECALL THESE SPRINGS BEFORE SOMEONE LOSES THEIR LIFE! I WILL NEED TO HAVE MY SUSPENSION REPAIRED, AS WELL AS POSSIBLY MY FRONT RIGHT TIRE. I WHOLLY EXPECT NISSAN TO PICK UP THE TAB FOR THIS.

MY WIFE HAD JUST BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND STARTED DRIVING DOWN OUR ROAD. JUST AS SHE STARTED SHE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT. THERE IS A SERVICE STATION 1/8TH MILE FROM OUR HOUSE. SHE DROVE THE CAR EXTREMELY SLOWLY (5MPH) TO THE STATION AND HAD THE MECHANIC CHECK THE CAR. THE MECHANIC TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL AND ONE OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION SHOCK ABSORBER SPRINGS FELL OUT OF THE CAR - BROKEN INTO TWO PIECES. IT HAD FATIGUED AND CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED. THE MECHANIC INFORMED HER THAT SHE WAS VERY LUCKY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN SHE WAS DRIVING NORMAL SPEED AS IT COULD HAVE SLICED THE TIRE AND CAUSED A BLOW OUT AT HIGH SPEED. I CALLED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND THEY INFORMED ME THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE AND THAT SINCE THE CAR WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY THE REPAIR COST WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY. IT COST APPROX $650 TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT SUSPENSION UNITS.

WHILE I AM THANKFUL THAT I WASN'T DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY OR NEAR PEDESTRIANS (I WORK IN A CITY), HAVING THIS HAPPEN ON A 6 YEAR OLD CAR SEEMS A LITTLE SUSPICIOUS. I HOPE THERE IS SOME SORT OF RECALL AND WOULD LOVE TO KNOW IF NISSAN IS WILLING TO REIMBURSE THE 1400 I UNEXPECTEDLY HAD TO PAY.

IN ADDITION, THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARMS WERE REPLACED DUE TO CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000.

WHEN I ENTERED THE VEHICLE AND PLACED THE GEAR INTO DRIVE THE FRONT DRIVER END COLLAPSED ON THE TIRE AND A PIECE OF THE METAL STRUT FELL OUT OF THE CAR ONTO THE PAVEMENT. WE CONTACTED THE COMPANY AND NISSAN FINALLY DECIDED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR AFTER WE THREATENED TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION. WE ASKED THE DEALER MECHANIC WHO REPAIRED THE SHOCK/STRUT THAT WE WERE NOW CONCERNED THAT THE OTHER SIDE WOULD BE FAULTY AND IF IT WAS SAFE AND/OR IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE SAID HE CHECKED IT AND IT WAS FINE. SURE ENOUGH JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN 1 YEAR FROM THEN MY PREGNANT WIFE WAKES UP TO FIND THE FRONT END OF HER CAR COLLAPSED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHILE BEING PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY. WE ARE EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT NEITHER ONE OF US WAS DRIVING THE CAR WHEN BOTH OF THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRED. I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED LAST NIGHT. TODAY I FOUND OUT IT WAS THE COIL SPRING, WHICH HAD SNAPPED OFF AND WAS DIGGING INTO MY TIRE. UPON INSPECTION, I FOUND A PIECE OF THE SPRING IN THE ROAD AND NOTED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS LOWER THAN THE OTHER. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK, HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND THEY FOUND THAT THE SPRING HAD INDEED BROKEN OFF. THE SPRING WAS NOT RUSTY, IT IS CURRENTLY 6 YEARS OLD AND HAS ONLY 45K MILES ON IT. SINCE THERE ARE NO AFTERMARKET PARTS FOR THIS AND NISSAN SELLS SPRING, MOUNT, STRUT (NOT AN ASSEMBLY), THEY ARE FORCED TO PUT ON ALL NISSAN PARTS WHICH MAKES ME NERVOUS THAT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. THE MECHANIC ADVISED I WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING AS THE SPRING HAD GONE THROUGH THE STRUT AND WAS VERY CLOSE TO SHREDDING THE TIRE. WHILE TRAVELLING AT SPEEDS OF 35-45 MPH NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM VEHICLE (DISTANCE TRAVELLED 2.2 MILES FROM ORIGIN). AFTER NOTICING SMOKE, IMMEDIATELY PROCEEDED TO SLOW DOWN IN ORDER TO PULLOVER TO SIDE OF ROAD. AS SOON AS BEGAN TO DECELERATE, HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE FRONT OF THE CAR DROPPED - THIS WAS DUE TO THE TIRE FAILING. ONCE PULLED OVER, WAS ABLE TO INSPECT AND DETERMINE THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE COIL SPRING HAD FAILED AND WAS CONTACTING THE TIRE. FAILURE POINT WAS APPROXIMATELY 9.25" (ALONG OUTSIDE EDGE) OF THE COIL SPRING MEASURED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE COIL. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LOCAL DEALER WHERE ALL REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED THE SAME DAY OF THE EVENT. DEALER REFERRED TO AN ONGOING NHTSA INVESTIGATION RELATED TO THIS FAILURE. EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY THE REPAIRS WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY (GOODWILL) DUE TO A LIKELY UPCOMING RECALL.

AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION DRIVER SIDE COIL WAS SNAPPED IN AROUND THE SAME SPOT, JUST DIDN'T END UP OFF THE SPRING SEAT. 250 DOLLARS WORTH OF PARTS PLUS MECHANIC LABOR. LUCKILY IT BROKE IN THE DRIVEWAY. MECHANIC SAID I DEFINATELY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN IN AN ACCIDENT IF I WAS MOVING MORE THAN 30MPH.

I ARRIVED AT HOME (175 MILES FROM GRAYSON KY) WHEN I STARTED UP MY ROAD THE CAR FELT LIKE I WAS GETTING A FLAT. I STOPPED IN MY DRIVEWAY AND THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WAS COMPLETELY FLAT. THE NEXT MORNING I REMOVED THE FLAT TIRE AND TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP. AT THE REPAIR SHOP THE TIRE HAD A GROVE CUT INTO THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE, THE MECHANIC SAID I HAD BETTER CHECK THE CAR TO SEE WHAT CUT THE TIRE. ON MY RETURN HOME I INSPECTED THE LEFT FRONT SUSPENSION. THE COIL SPRING ON THE LEFT FRONT STRUT HAD BROKEN AND SLIPPED OUT OF ITS MOUNT AND CUT THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE. IT WAS JUST BY THE GRACE OF GOD THAT THE TIRE DID NOT FAIL DUE TO THE CUTTING CAUSED BY THE BROKEN COIL SPRING UNTIL I CAME UP MY DRIVEWAY. I HAVE THE TIRE AND COIL SPRING IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO EXAMINE IT. IF IT HAD FAILED AT INTERSTATE SPEED I MIGHT HAVE BEEN KILLED.

I WAS EXTREMELY UNHAPPY TO LEARN THAT THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS DEFECTIVE PART AND NISSAN IS THE ONLY ONE THAT SUPPLY THIS SPRING COIL PART FOR MY LOCAL MECHANIC TO REPLACE. TO BE SAFE, I HAD BOTH FRONT SPRING COILS REPLACED, COSTING ME $950 IN REPAIR WORK (INCL. REPLACING THE 2 FRONT STRUTS AND A WHEEL ALIGNMENT). I WENT TO CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE ON MY WIFE'S VERSA WHILE IT WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY. UPON DOING SO, I NOTED THAT THE FRONT RIGHT COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN SOMEWHERE NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE SPRING AND THE SHARP BROKEN END WAS LODGED TIGHTLY AGAINST THE TOP OF THE TIRE TREAD, DEPRESSING IT BY ABOUT HALF AN INCH. AMAZINGLY, IT HAD NOT YET BROKEN THE TIRE, INDICATING THAT WHENEVER THE BREAKAGE HAD OCCURRED, THE SPRING HAD ONLY RECENTLY BROKEN LOOSE AND IMPACTED THE TIRE. HAD I NOT NOTICED THE BROKEN SPRING AND HAD THE VEHICLE DRIVEN ANYWHERE, IT LIKELY WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE TIRE OR WHEEL, POSSIBLY CAUSING A CRASH. I HAVE NOTED HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS EXACT ISSUE IN THIS DATABASE AND OTHER PLACES ON THE INTERNET (THE MAJORITY OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT VERSA'S SEEM TO BE RELATED TO COIL SPRINGS BREAKING). OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAS AGREED THAT THERE IS LIKELY A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM SINCE THEY HAVE DONE MANY REPLACEMENTS OF THIS PART IN PARTICULAR, AND SHIPPED MANY REPLACEMENT PARTS ALL OVER NEW ENGLAND. THEY HAVE ALSO STATED THAT WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL RECALL, THE BEST THEY CAN DO IS TO REPLACE THE PART, AT OUR COST. THE PARTS THEMSELVES ARE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND AT THIS POINT, AND MANY CUSTOMERS HAVE HAD THEM REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES, SUPPORTING MY BELIEF THAT THEY ARE DEFECTIVE. RECENTLY I NOTICED A PIECE OF METAL NEAR MY MAILBOX. LOOKING AT IT I QUICKLY REALIZED IT WAS PROBABLY A PIECE OF MY NISSAN VERSA HATCHBACKS LEFT COIL SPRING. SURE ENOUGH, THE BREAKAGE MATCHED WHAT WAS ON MY CAR. WHY DID I SO QUICKLY GUESS THAT IT WAS FROM MY CAR? THE REPAIR COST ME 200$ WITH A STUDENT DISCOUNT, WHICH I VERY CHEAP, SOME PEOPLE FAIR WORSE. THE MORE RECENT LEFT COIL SPRING BROKE WITHOUT ME EVEN NOTICING ANYTHING, I ONLY FOUND THE BROKEN PIECE ABOUT HALF A RING SIZE. SINCE IT WAS NEAR MY MAILBOX, IT MUST HAVE BROKE OFF AT LOW SPEEDS, PROBABLY WHEN I DROVE OVER THE LITTLE TROUGH IN FRONT OF THE DRIVE WAY FOR THE DRAIN. WE WERE DRIVING ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY DOING 65 MPH WHEN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE COIL SPRING BROKE AND PUNCTURED THE PASSENGER SIDE TIRE CAUSING A BLOWOUT. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT, BUT THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN DIFFERENT. AT THE TIME I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS THE COIL SPRING, I JUST THOUGHT I RAN OVER SOMETHING ON THE HIGHWAY. IT WASN'T UNTIL I GOT TO A SERVICE SHOP THAT I LEARNED THAT IT WAS THE COIL SPRING THAT CAUSED THE BLOWOUT. OPEN INSPECTION WE SAW THAT THE BOTTOM OF THE SPRING HAD JUST BROKEN CLEAN OFF. THERE WAS NO RUST ANY WHERE NEAR WHERE THE SPRING BROKE. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM AND IT'S ENTIRELY TOO COMMON FOR CARS THAT HAVE UNDER 100K MILES AND ARE 5 YEARS OLD OR LESS. MY CAR HAD 68,432 MILES ON IT WHEN THE SPRING BROKE AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. OF THE 159 NHTSA COMPLAINTS FOR THE 2009 VERSA 58 OF THEM ARE FOR THE COIL SPRINGS BREAKING. THAT?S ALMOST 1/3 OF ALL THE COMPLAINTS AND THIS ISN'T JUST A PROBLEM FOR THE 2009 MODEL YEAR. BASED ON THE COMPLAINTS, THIS HAS APPARENTLY BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE VERSA FROM WHEN IT WAS INTRODUCED TO THE 2011 MODEL YEAR. NOW THIS IS WHERE I BECAME SKEPTICAL BECAUSE THE CAR IS ~4.5 YEARS OLD, LESS THAN 54,000 MILES, IS VERY WELL KEPT, AND ALTHOUGH I HAVE A LONG COMMUTE IT IS PRIMARY ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUES AND IT APPEARS THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS ENCOUNTERED THIS ISSUE IN THE SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL OF THIS CAR. I CHECKED THE CAR THE NEXT DAY AND NOTICED THE FRONT END WAS LOW. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, THE PASSENGER SIDE SPRING IS NOW BROKEN. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET A CLOSER LOOK AT IT YET, BUT IT LOOKS BROKEN IN A SIMILAR MANNER TO THE FIRST ONE. EVERYTHING I'VE LOOKED UP TELLS ME THAT THESE SPRINGS ARE NORMALLY SUPPOSE TO LAST OVER 100,000 MILES, AND YET BOTH MINE HAVE BROKEN NOW BEFORE HITTING 65,000 MILES. THE CLUNK IS ALWAYS THERE AT 1 TO 1 1/4 TURN FROM THE FULL CLOCKWISE STOP. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS PROBLEM AT LEAST 5 TIMES; THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SEVERAL TIMES, THE SERVICE WRITER SAID HE COULDN'T HEAR OR FEEL THE 'CLUNK' BUT THE MECHANIC SAID HE COULD. THE VERSA DOES MOVE AROUND QUITE A BIT AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE FREEWAY, BUT I AM UNSURE IF THAT IS CAUSED BY THE ABOVE DESCRIBED PROBLEM OR THE LIGHT WEIGHT OF THE VERSA. THE SOUND AND FEEL OF THIS 'CLUNK' IS VERY DISCONCERTING, AND GIVEN THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS I'VE SEEN FOR 3 YEARS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, I'M WONDERING IF THE GOVERNMENT/AUTOMAKER ARE WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DIE BEFORE THEY ACT.

2009 NISSAN VERSA HATCHBACK LESS THAN A MONTH THE ALIGNMENT NEEDED FIXING THE CAR PULLS TO BOTH SIDES. THE BEGINNING IT GOES TO THE LEFT THEN PUTTING THE CAR BACK STRAIGHT IT GOES TO THE RIGHT. IT GETS WORSE WHEN THE CAR GOES OVER 40 MILES PER HOUR. *TR
