PURCHASED MY '05 NISSAN XTERRA IN THE SPRING OF 2012 WITH ABOUT 160,000 MILES. FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS I HAD MINOR ISSUES LIKE SHUDDERING/VIBRATIONS RANDOMLY WHEN I ACCELERATED AND THE HEAT NOT WORKING WHEN I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE OTHER DAY WHEN I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP AND MY CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY THAT I KNEW I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I TOOK MY XTERRA TO 3 DIFFERENT MECHANICS AND EACH ONE EXPLAINED TO ME THAT I WOULD NEED A COMPLETELY NEW TRANSMISSION AND FROM THERE THEY WOULD SEE IF I IN FACT NEEDED TO CHANGE THE RADIATOR (WHICH THEY WERE POSITIVE WAS THE ORIGINAL ISSUE DUE TO SIMILAR ISSUES WITH OTHER NISSAN SUV OWNERS). THE REPAIRS WILL COST ME WELL OVER $4,000 AND UNFORTUNATELY AS A COLLEGE STUDENT, THERE IS NO WAY I CAN AFFORD TO REPAIR THE TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR. WHAT WAS APPALLING TO ME WAS WHEN I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE. THERE ARE HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ON VARIOUS WEBSITES ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NISSAN HAS YET TO ISSUE A RECALL. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EXCLUDED MANY PEOPLE AND PUT MANY MORE AT AN UNFAIR DISADVANTAGE. I PERSONALLY BOUGHT MY NISSAN, BECAUSE OF THEIR REPUTATION, BUT THE FACT THAT THEY WILL NOT COME TO THE AID OF THEIR CONSUMERS SPEAKS VOLUMES OF THIS COMPANY. *TR

WHEN DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS I BEGAN TO NOTICE THE ENGINE BOGGING DOWN WHEN CHANGING GEARS. UPON TAKING IT TO MY MECHANIC I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A LEAK BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE COOLANT SYSTEMS. THE FIX WOULD REQUIRE A REPLACEMENT OF BOTH SYSTEMS TOTALLY APPROX. $6000! APPARENTLY THIS IS A "KNOWN ISSUE" WITH 2005-2010 XTERRAS. UPON CONTACTING NISSAN I WAS TOLD THAT SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS OVER 100,000 MILES THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO FOR ME. IF THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE, AND A RATHER MAJOR ONE AT THAT, I'M NOT SURE WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY RECALLS OR SOME KIND OF FIX. *TR

GAS GAUGE READS EMPTY WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS FULL OR SHOWS SOME QUANTITY OF GAS WHEN IT IS EMPTY AND VARIATIONS IN BETWEEN. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AFFECTING SEVERAL MODELS AND YEARS THAT NISSAN EXTENDED ITS WARRANTY FOR, BUT DID NOT RECALL, CLAIMING IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE (SEE HTTP://WWW.NISSANASSIST.COM/WEB/FUEL-SENDING-UNIT/INDEX.PHP?MENU=2). THE EXTENDED WARRANTY DID NOT ADVISE OWNERS TO REPLACE THE PROBLEM SENDING UNITS, IT JUST PROVIDED FOR REPAIRS IF AND WHEN, SUBJECT TO MILEAGE AND TIME LIMITS, THE VEHICLE MANIFESTED THE SENDING UNIT PROBLEM. MY LOW MILEAGE VEHICLE DEVELOPED THIS PROBLEM AT 46000 MILES, WELL UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY MILEAGE LIMIT BUT THE TIMING WAS BEYOND THE ARBITRARY EXTENDED TIME PERIOD. FOLLOWING MY OPENING A CASE WITH NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS THEY DENIED COVERAGE FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AS IT WAS BEYOND THE ARBITRARY TIME LIMIT, ALTHOUGH WELL BELOW THE MILEAGE LIMIT. FAULTY FUEL QUANTITY READINGS ARE NOT JUST AN INCONVENIENCE. THEY CAN RESULT IN HAZARDOUS OVERFILLING OF FUEL TANKS (OR ATTEMPTS TO FILL AN ALREADY FILLED TANK) WHEN THE GAUGE ERRONEOUSLY READS EMPTY RESULTING IN FLAMMABLE GAS SPILLS, DIZZYING AND ENVIRONMENTALLY UNSOUND VAPOR EMISSIONS AT THE PUMP. ON THE FLIP SIDE WHEN THERE IS LITTLE OR NO FUEL IN THE TANK BUT THE GAUGE SHOWS SOME QUANTITY OF FUEL SUCH AS 1/4 TANK OR MORE, DRIVING OFF ON LONG COMMUTES OR TRIPS RESULTS IN RUNNING OUT OF GAS ON HIGHWAYS. IN MY CASE THIS IS IN RURAL AREAS OR BACK ROADS AND HIGHWAYS OUT OF CELL PHONE RANGE AND FAR FROM SERVICES, AND CAN OCCUR IN SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS. I BELIEVE THIS KNOWN PROBLEM IS A SAFETY PROBLEM THAT POSES UNNECESSARY RISKS TO DRIVERS AND SHOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A RECALL, NOT JUST AN ARBITRARY LIMITED EXTENSION OF WARRANTY, AND DISCLAIMER BEYOND THAT. *TR

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME UP IN MY 2005 NISSAN XTERRA AT 85,000 MILES. TOOK IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP WHERE I MAKE OIL CHANGES, I WAS TOLD TRANSMISSION BROKE AND RADIATOR FLUID CONTAMINATION. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE, BUT THEY FLAT OUT REFUSED THE CONTAMINATION, INSTEAD OFFER TO REPLACE BOTH TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR FOR $5,500 TO AVOID FUTURE PROBLEMS. I WAS NOT CONVINCED. IMMEDIATELY, ANOTHER GUY IN THE DEALERSHIP OFFERS TO TRADE IN FOR A NEW CAR. I TOOK THE CAR OUT AND WENT TO ANOTHER TRANSMISSION SHOP. SURE ENOUGH, THEY NOTICED RADIATION FLUID CONTAMINATING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. COST WAS AROUND $3,750. BECAUSE, THE DEADLINE WAS EARLY JUNE'2013 AND NOW IS EARLY JULY, THEY ARE TELLING ME I CANNOT SUBMIT THE CLAIM. I HOPE THE COURT DOES NOT APPROVE THE FINAL SETTLEMENT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE WAS DISPLAYING AN INCORRECT FUEL LEVEL READING. THE CHECK ENGINE WAS ALSO ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL . THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FUEL SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000.

AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE MILES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WENT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FUEL SENDING UNIT/SENSOR AND THAT IT WAS NO LONGER COVERED AFTER 30K MILES. AFTER RETURNING HOME AND DOING RESEARCH, I WENT ONLINE TO X.NISSANHELP.COM AFTER PERFORMING A SEARCH, I CAME ACROSS MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. A SIMILAR PROBLEM WAS FOUND ON THE 2000-2004 XTERRA MODELS AND A RECALL WAS PERFORMED WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP AFTER NOT GETTING ANY FUEL, POSING A GREAT DANGER. IT SEEMS THAT SOMETHING IN THE UNIT IS FAULTY AND WILL CORRODE OVER TIME. THERE IS A GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING THE PROBLEM IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 2 YRS AND WITH AROUND 39K-49K. IF THIS PROBLEM EXISTED IN PREVIOUS MODELS, AND IT WAS RECALLED, THE 2005-2007 XTERRAS, FRONTIERS, AND PATHFINDERS SHOULD GET THIS FIXED AT NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER!! WHY WAIT FOR ACCIDENTS AND POSSIBLE DEATHS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE PROBLEM LIES IN AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VEHICLE. COST OF REPAIR RANGES FROM $300-600." *TR

IN DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND THAT SEVERAL NISSAN VEHICLES, ESPECIALLY ITS TRUCKS AND SUVS, HAVE SUFFERED FROM THIS PRODUCT DEFECT. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT IF NISSAN RECTIFIED THE SITUATION BY RECALLING VEHICLES OR COVERING MY CHARGE FOR REPAIRS. *TR

APPARENTLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. A SIMILAR PROBLEM WAS FOUND ON THE 2000-2004 XTERRA MODELS AND A RECALL WAS PERFORMED WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP AFTER NOT GETTING ANY FUEL, POSING A GREAT DANGER. IT SEEMS THAT SOMETHING IN THE UNIT IS FAULTY AND WILL CORRODE OVER TIME. THERE IS A GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING THE PROBLEM IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 2 YRS AND WITH AROUND 39K-49K. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT INFORMED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT SINCE THE VEHILCE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. FIRST PROBLEM - WHEN I HAD 53,000 MI ON IT, IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, IT STARTED CUTTING OUT AND WOULDN'T ACCELERATE AT ALL, HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALER TO FIND OUT THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS BAD. THEY SAID THAT HE RADIATOR LEAKED, FLOODING MY TRANSMISSION WITH COOLANT AND RUINED MY TRANSMISSION. THEY REFUSED TO HONOR THE WARRANTY STATING THAT "THE TRANMISSION DID NOT FAIL - THE RADIATOR DID (WHICH WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY) THEREFORE THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT COVERED". I HAD TO LET THEM REPLACE THE RADIATOR AND FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION 3 TIMES - IT COST ME $1,400 OUT OF POCKET - NOW HERE I AM 30,000 MILES LATER AND MY REVERSE WILL NOT WORK AT ALL, MY TRANSMISSION NEEDS REPLACED. SO I HAD PAID 1,400 JUST TO BUY MYSELF AN YEAR & A HALF AND NOW I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. 2ND PROBLEM - I HAVE THE FUEL GAUGE/SENSOR PROBLEM, ALSO. I FILLED UP ONE DAY, GOT IN MY CAR AND GAUGE READ EMPTY & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I HAD A RIP-OFF MECHANIC CHARGE ME $170 TO REPLACE THE SENSOR - NOTHING EVER CHANGED, GAUGE IS STILL BROKE AND LIGHT IS STILL ON. THEN 500 MILES LATER, AT AROUND 46000 MILES, WHEN THE FUEL INDICATOR WAS AT 1/2 TANK- THE NEEDLE SUDDENLY PLUNGED TO BELOW EMPTY, A LIGHT CAME ON AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. THIS WAS ALL VERY ALARMING, AND WE WERE STUCK IN BUMPER-BUMPER TRAFFIC IN A BAD PART OF PHOENIX WHEN IT HAPPENED. IT WASN'T HOT OUT, JUST A BIG TRAFFIC JAM IN 5:00 RUSH, AND WE WERE NOWHERE NEAR A GAS STATION. IT WAS TERRIBLE, AND WE WERE VERY SCARED TO BE STRANDED. AFTER THAT WE BOUGHT A HUGE GAS CAN, AND JUST DROVE AROUND WITH 10 GALLONS OF GAS JUST IN CASE. THAT IS TERRIBLE, TO HAVE TO DRIVE WONDERING IF WHEN YOU'LL ACTUALLY RUN OUT OF GAS, VS. IN THE PAST MONTH I HAVE EXPERIENCED A SERIES OF ANOMALIES WITH MY FUEL GAUGE. I INITIALLY NOTICED THIS WHEN I COMPLETELY REFILLED MY GAS TANK ONLY TO NOTICE THAT THE GAUGE SHOWED 7/8THS FULL. IT SEEMED ODD, BUT I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS AN ISSUE AS THE PUMP MAY HAVE AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF PREMATURELY. TURNS OUT TO NOT BE THE CASE. ON MY NEXT TRIP TO THE GAS STATION, UPON REFILLING THE GAS TANK, MY GAUGE ONLY READ A HALF TANK. UPON MY NEXT TRIP IN THE VEHICLE, THE GAUGE READ PROPERLY. HOWEVER, SUBSEQUENT TRIPS THE GAUGE READ SOMETIMES MORE THAN IT SHOULD AND SOMETIMES LESS THAN IT SHOULD. FOR EXAMPLE, AFTER GOING 78 MILES THE GAUGE STILL READ "FULL", AND THEN AFTER GOING 96 MILES THE GAUGE READ "HALF FULL". AFTER REFILLING THE GAS TANK THIS LAST TIME, THE GAUGE READ 3/4 OF A TANK. THE NEXT TRIP THE GAUGE READ "FULL". SUBSEQUENT TRIPS THE GAUGE READS SOMETIMES MORE THAN IT SHOULD AND SOMETIMES LESS THAN IT SHOULD. THE LAST COUPLE OF TRIPS THE GAUGE SHOWED THE SAME AMOUNT EACH TIME EVEN THOUGH I HAVE DRIVEN MORE THAN 60 MILES. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST NISSAN DEALER (WHERE I'VE HAD SERVICE PERFORMED BEFORE) TO CHECK FOR A RECALL AS I HAD HEARD THERE WERE VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. HAVING OUR VEHICLE RUN OUT OF GAS ON THIS FREEWAY, WITH THE AMOUNT OF TRUCKS PER HR COULD BE DEVASTATING, IF ATTEMPTING TO GET TO A SHOULDER SAFELY. WE HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE NEW. APPARENTLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. A SIMILAR PROBLEM WAS FOUND ON THE 2000-2004 XTERRA MODELS AND A RECALL WAS PERFORMED WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP AFTER NOT GETTING ANY FUEL, POSING A GREAT DANGER. IT SEEMS THAT SOMETHING IN THE UNIT IS FAULTY AND WILL CORRODE OVER TIME. THERE IS A GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING THE PROBLEM IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 2 YRS AND WITH AROUND 30K-49K. I HOOKED UP A DIAGNOSTIC TO IT AND DISCOVERED A CODE THAT INDICATES A FAULTY FUEL SENSOR. I CONTACTED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM. THEY MADE ME GO INTO NISSAN AND HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE IT. THEY CHARGED ME $120 DOLLARS AND TOLD ME THAT THE FUEL SENSOR WAS FAULTY AND IT WAS GOING TO COST $600 TO REPLACE. NISSAN JUST RECALLED ALL XTERRAS FROM 2006 TO 2008 BECAUSE OF FAULTY FUEL SENSORS. I FOUND A WEBSITE THAT HAS ONE HUNDRED OTHER OWNERS OF A 2005 XTERRA WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. IN SEARCHING OVER SEVERAL FORUMS, AND OVER 100 COMPLAINTS, I FOUND THE ISSUE TO BE ERROR CODE: P0463 (FUEL LEVEL SENSOR). IT OCCURS EVERYDAY. TODAY, I PUT A FULL TANK OF GAS IN MY CAR BUT MY GAS GAUGE SHOWED THAT IT WAS 1/4 FULL. I HAD AN ARGUMENT WITH THE GAS STATION CLERK THAT THEY RIPPED ME OFF. SINCE IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT I WASN'T ABLE TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGERS OF THAT STATION. I DECIDED TO DRIVE TO ANOTHER GAS STATION TO SEE IF I COULD FILL IT UP, BUT ALL OF SUDDEN, THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TURNS ON AND NOW THE GAUGE WAS COMPLETELY DOWN WITH THE LIGHT ON. THE ONLY WAY FOR ME TO KNOW THAT MY TANK IS FULL IS TO TRY TO FILL IT UP AGAIN. BUT, BECAUSE IT WAS FULL, THE TANK WAS NOT ALLOWING ANYMORE GAS. I DECIDED TO DO A BRIEF RESEARCH TO FIND THAT MANY OTHERS HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. IT'S A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA WITH 50,000 MILES. MOST OF THE PEOPLE ONLINE INDICATED THAT THEY ALSO HAVE THE SIMILAR PROBLEM AT THE SIMILAR MILEAGE COSTING THEM OVER 500 DOLLARS IN REPAIR. NOW THAT THE GAUGE IS DISABLED, I WOULDN'T KNOW WHEN MY TANK WILL BE EMPTIED. I COULD BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY OR SOMEWHERE IN THE WILDERNESS WITHOUT ANY GAS. PEOPLE ONLINE WERE SAYING ITS PART OF THE SENSOR IN THE CAR WHICH WAS MADE FAULTY FOR MANY OF THE NISSAN TRUCKS AND SUV'S. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A BAD MOVE BY NISSAN AND I WILL DEFINITELY WANT THEM TO HAVE A RECALL. IT IS UNFAIR FOR CONSUMERS TO BE PAYING EXTRA 400-600 DOLLARS TO REPLACE A FAULTY ITEM. *TR

THIS IS EVIDENTIALLY A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THE XTERRAS, PATHFINDERS AND TITANS ALL MADE BY NISSAN. WHILE THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE AT FACE VALUE, A MISREADING OF THE FUEL GAUGE COULD VERY LIKELY PUT A LONE OCCUPANT IN A VERY BAD SITUATION LEADING TO ANY NUMBER OF THREATENING SITUATIONS. THE FACT THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, YET REFUSES TO ADDRESS IT REGARDLESS OF THE POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUES WOULD SEEM TO INDICATE, AT THE VERY LEAST , A DISREGARD FOR THEIR CUSTOMER'S SAFETY. *TR
