THE TIMING CHAIN HAS CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO DIE ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY I WAS ALMOST HIT BY A FEW CARS. i HAD TO DRIVE MY CAR GOING ONLY 40 MPH ALL THE WAY BECASUE THAT IS ALL IT WOULD DO. IT HAS A VERY LOUD NOISE AND IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON THE ROAD ANYMORE. I HAVE READ AND NISSAN SHOULD REPLACE THESE BECAUSE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEM YES MY CAR IS AVAILABLE FOR IMSPECTION i HAVE REGULAR KEPT MAINTENENCE ON IT NO THERE WERE NO WARNING LAMPS AT ALL JUST LOUD NOISE AND THEN NO COMPRESSION

Engine noise: - Noise coming from time belt support - The timing chain guide wore out fast. - Timing chain guide inner plastic wore out causing chain to rely metal bracket then the metal causing noise and eventually break the the timing chain.

My engine self destruct because Nissan used cheap made plastic tensioners that shredded metal into my engine causing it to self destruct. Nissan knew about this problem and continued installing these tensioners from 2005-2015. I could have crashed into anything while driving or someone could have hit me if my engine would’ve died while driving. My safety was not prioritized by Nissan. The warning light was a whining noise coming from the engine while startup and pressing on the gas pedal. So they knew the problem existed but didn’t care.

THIS VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED WITH PLASTIC TENSIONER GUIDES TO THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS. THE ENGINE IS DESIGNED WITH AN "INTERFERENCE" TIMING CHAIN WHICH MEANS THAT IF THE TIMING CHAIN BREAKS, IT RESULTS IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WITHOUT WARNING. ALTHOUGH NISSAN DID NOT DESIGN THE TIMING CHAIN AS A MAINTENANCE ITEM, THE PLASTIC GUIDES WEAR OUT LONG AFTER THE VEHICLE WARRANTY EXPIRES. ALTHOUGH THEY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM IN SUBSEQUENT MODEL YEARS, THEY NEVER CONTACTED OR NOTIFIED THE AFFECTED OWNERS OF THE PROBLEM THAT UNLESS THESE GUIDES ARE REPLACED THEY WILL EVENTUALLY RESULT IN THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS WEARING OUT THE GUIDES CAUSING THE SECONDARY CHAINS THEMSELVES TO RUN METAL ON METAL AGAINST THE TENSIONERS. BECAUSE OF THIS CONTINUED WEAR, THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS MAY FAIL AT ANY TIME THE ENGINE IS ON WITHOUT WARNING AND DESTROY THE ENGINE. NISSAN ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE PROBLEM BUT FAILED TO NOTIFY OWNERS THAT AS THE VEHICLES APPROACH APPROXIMATELY 100,000 MILES OR MORE, THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS MAY FAIL. I HAVE ATTACHED PHOTOS OF THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS REMOVED FROM MY VEHICLE WHICH SHOW THE PLASTIC GUIDE ON ONE NEARLY COMPLETELY WORN THROUGH, AND THE OTHER ONE BROKEN WITH ONLY HALF OF THE PLASTIC GUIDE STILL IN PLACE ON THE TENSIONER. I ALSO INCLUDED MY REPAIR RECEIPT FOR THE $2,123.40 REPAIR. FINALLY, I INCLUDED THE NISSAN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THEY RECALLED THE V8 ENGINES WITH THIS TYPE OF ISSUE, BUT NOT THE V6 ENGINES (I HAVE NOT CONFIRMED THAT HOWEVER,) NISSAN SHOULD IMMEDIATELY ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE VEHICLES AND COVER THE COST OF REPAIRS ALREADY MADE BY CONSUMERS.

PLEASE KNOW WE ARE ALSO A CURRENT OWNER OF A NISSAN TITAN AND ARE LOYAL TO THE NISSAN BRAND. IN 2011 THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION WITH ROUGHLY 50,000 MILES FAILED DUE TO A FAULTY DESIGN ASSOCIATED WITH A COOLER ASSEMBLY. THIS TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT NO COST TO US BY LIBERTY NISSAN LOCATED IN HANOVER, PENNSYLVANIA. AFTER SAID TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED, WE STARTED TO NOTICE A CONSTANT WHINING THAT WE THOUGHT WAS SOMEHOW ATTRIBUTED TO THE NEW TRANSMISSION. WE RETURNED TO LIBERTY NISSAN TO HAVE THEM INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE OF THE NOISE AND IT WAS THEIR DETERMINATION THAT THE NOISE WAS DUE TO WORE OUT TIMING BELT SPROCKETS. WE EXPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS ANOMALY HAD NOT EXISTED PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW TRANSMISSION AS IT WAS AND REMAINS QUITE NOTICEABLE. HOWEVER, THIS EXPLANATION SEEMED TO FALL UPON DEAF EARS. SUBSEQUENTLY LIBERTY NISSAN INFORMED US THAT IF WE WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE THE COSTS WOULD BE ROUGHLY $1,200.00 DOLLARS. THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WE COULD NOT AFFORD AT THE TIME AND FURTHERMORE FELT THIS WAS NOT SOMETHING THAT WOULD OCCUR UNDER NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR FOR A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 50,000 MILES. TO THIS DAY WE REMAIN SKEPTICAL OF THIS DIAGNOSIS. WE ARE NOW LEFT WITH A VEHICLE THAT LOST ITS APPEAL DUE TO THIS CONSTANT, AGGRESSIVE WHINING INSTEAD OF ONE THAT IN THE PAST DREW POSITIVE ATTENTION FROM ONLOOKERS AND PASSERSBY'S FOR ITS APPEARANCE. SIMPLE, INEXPENSIVE FIX TO REPLACE THE FAULTY RADIATOR WAS NOT COMMUNICATED TO ME AND NOW IT'S TOO LATE TO SAVE THE TRANSMISSION. NISSAN GOT AWAY WITH MURDER AND CAUSED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE MONEY THAT THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR DEFECTIVE PARTS. IN OCTOBER 2015 I NOTICED THAT MY XTERRA WAS OVERHEATING AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AT TIMES. WHEN I REMOVED THE RADIATOR CAP TO CHECK THE COOLANT, IT LOOKED FOAMY AND MILKY, LIKE A LIME SMOOTHIE. I THOUGHT I MIGHT HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC, WHO TOLD ME ABOUT THE ISSUE WITH NISSAN RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION CROSS-CONTAMINATION. HE TOLD ME THAT FLUSHING THE SYSTEMS WOULD NOT HELP AND THE ENTIRE COOLING SYSTEM AND TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF ABOUT $6500, WHICH I DIDN'T HAVE. HE TOLD ME TO CONTACT NISSAN. UNFORTUNATELY, AT THE TIME MY XTERRA WAS DIAGNOSED, IT HAD 112,000 MILES ON IT, WHICH WAS BEYOND THE SCOPE OF NISSAN'S EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH CAME ABOUT AS A RESULT OF THE CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT. DROVE TO THE DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED REPLACING THE FAILED CATALYTIC CONVERTER (RIGHT REAR) AND THE TIMING CHAIN, TENSIONERS ETC. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP SHOWED THEM THE PRINT OUT FROM THIS SITE AND TOLD THEM I AM HAVING ALL THOSE PROBLEMS WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS. THEY TOLD ME SINCE MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL THEY BASICALLY COULD NOT HELP WITHOUT CHARGING ME $900 FOR A RADIATOR PLUS THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE $78. I HAD TO PAY $100 JUST FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT. THEY TOLD ME A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION WOULD BE $9000. AS I CAME UP TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT, THE XTERRA BEGAN TO SHUDDER AND THE TACHOMETER STARTED RISING AND FALLING UNTIL I FINALLY STOPPED, THEN THE TACHOMETER DROPPED BELOW 500 RPM AND THE TRUCK TURNED OFF. RESTARTED IT FINE, BUT IT STALLED AGAIN. I QUICKLY FIGURED OUT THAT ALTHOUGH IT IS AN AUTOMATIC, I NEEDED TO DRIVE IT LIKE A MANUAL. SO I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, STARTED IT AGAIN, IT DID NOT STALL, THEN I REVVED THE ENGINE TO 2,000 RPM AND PUT IT INTO DRIVE. OFF I WENT, AND IT DID NOT DO IT AGAIN THAT DAY. HOWEVER, OVER THE NEXT MONTH IT BECAME A GROWING PROBLEM, UNTIL IT FINALLY WAS OCCURRING EVERY SINGLE TIME I STOPPED UNLESS I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC WHO SPENT 4 HOURS DIAGNOSING IT TO BE CERTAIN OF THE PROBLEM. WHICH THEY SAID WAS A FAILING TORQUE CONVERTOR AND PLATE. IT FAILED DUE TO COOLANT LEAKING INTO THE TRANSMISSION FROM A BROKEN HOUSING COMING OFF OF THE RADIATOR (APPARENTLY A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR WHICH NISSAN REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY). NOT HARD TO VERIFY THEIR FINDINGS DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF PINK MILKSHAKE LOOKING LIQUID IN THE RADIATOR. FINAL VERDICT, AT BEST IT NEEDS A NEW TORQUE CONVERTOR AND PLATE, BUT WITH THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT TO INSTALL THOSE AND UNKNOWN FURTHER DAMAGE FROM THE COOLANT LEAK, A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS RECOMMENDED.

THE INITIAL INCIDENT WAS FAILED TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER GUIDES. AS INDICATED EARLIER NISSAN KNOWINGLY REDESIGNED THE PARTS SINCE THE ORIGINALS WERE FOUND TO WEAR THROUGH, CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO RUB DIRECTLY ON THE METAL POST OF THE TENSIONER AND CONTACT THE HOUSING COVER. DURING THE REPAIR THE NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED THE FAILED RADIATOR COOLANT CONTAMINATION ADDRESSED IN ODI NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: DP12004. THE TIMING CHAIN AND GUIDES WERE REPLACED; THE RADIATOR WAS REPLACED; COOLANT WAS FLUSHED; TRANSMISSION WAS DRAINED, FLUSHED, AND FILLED. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ALSO CONFIRMED NISSAN, N.A. WOULD NOT OFFER ANY AMOUNT OF REPAIR ASSISTANCE. TOTAL COST WAS $2200. THE DAY AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED IT SUDDENLY DECELERATED FROM 55MPH TO 30MPH AND THE RPM'S INCREASED TO 4K+ WHILE TRAVELING ON A MULTI LANE DARK COUNTRY HIGHWAY AT 11PM. THE SECTION OF HIGHWAY DID NOT HAVE AN EMERGENCY LANE OR SHOULDER. A VEHICLE WAS IN THE LEFT LANE AND A SEMI-TRUCK WAS QUICKLY APPROACHING FROM THE REAR IN THE RIGHT LANE. ONCE CROSSING THE BRIDGE THE VEHICLE WAS JERKED TO THE SHOULDER, AVOIDING A REAR COLLISION FROM THE APPROACHING SEMI-TRUCK. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE RPM'S RETURNED TO 1K, THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN NEUTRAL, AND THE CHECK ENGINE WAS ILLUMINATED. IT HAS SINCE COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND THAT IT IS CAUSED BY THE RADIATOR LEAKING COOLANT INTO THE TRANSMISSION CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO MIX WITH THE RADIATOR FLUID, EFFECTIVELY DESTROYING THE TRANSMISSION. I WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY WORK THE RPMS UP & GET THE TRANSMISSION TO SHIFT UP A FEW GEARS SO WE COULD MAKE IT OFF THE HIGHWAY. I THEN CONTACTED MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT NISSAN WAS AWARE OF THE ISSUES AND HAVE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 100,000 MI. HE INFORMED ME THAT TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION & THE RADIATOR IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $7000, HOWEVER, IF I WAS UNDER 100,000 MI, I WOULD ONLY HAVE TO PAY A $3,000 DEDUCTIBLE. BECAUSE I HAD PASSED THE 100,000 MILE MARK BY DRIVING MY VEHICLE BACK HOME, I WAS NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR THIS EXTENDED WARRANTY. I'VE OWNED MY NISSAN XTERRA FOR OVER 6 YEARS & HAVE MADE SURE TO STAY CURRENT ON ALL THE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. THE FACT THAT NISSAN IS NOT ONLY AWARE OF THESE ISSUES (WHICH HAVE ALLEGEDLY AFFECTED THOUSANDS OF NISSAN OWNERS), BUT ALSO THAT THEY HAVE FAILED TO TAKE ANY CORRECTIVE ACTION, IS SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE & ALSO DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. I HAD BEEN NOTICING A WHINING NOISE ASSOCIATED WITH TRANSMISSION 'FLARE' ON ACCELERATION FOR SOME TIME, BUT ONLY IN MARCH 2013 WAS IT DIAGNOSED AT 96K MILES BY THE DEALERSHIP AS FAULTY TIMING CHAIN GUIDES, A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 4 L ENGINE. THE DEALER SAID THE FAULTY PARTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED SOON. I CONTACTED NISSAN USA CONSUMER AFFAIRS ABOUT HAVING NISSAN PARTIALLY COVER THE COST OF REPLACING THE FAULTY PARTS. DESPITE HAVING THE DEALERSHIP'S ORIGINAL REPORT AND ESTIMATE, NISSAN'S REGIONAL REP INSISTED THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD TO RECONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS, WHICH WAS DONE. THE REP THEN REFUSED TO RETURN MY CALLS, AND DID NOT RESPOND TO DEALERSHIP QUERIES ABOUT THE REPAIRS EITHER. THE ENGINE NOISE WAS GETTING WORSE, AND FEARING A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE, I HAD THE DEALER REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER SAID THE TIMING CHAIN WAS SLAPPING AND ABOUT TO FAIL. XTERRA BEGAN TO FEEL SLUGGISH AND WOULD NOT CHANGE GEARS APPROPRIATELY (IT IS AN AUTOMATIC), AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE OF MILES. RETURNED HOME TO CHECK FLUIDS AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID DID NOT LOOK 'RIGHT'. CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALER/SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS CROSS CONTAMINATION OF RADIATOR FLUID WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND THE CAUSE WAS THAT THE RADIATOR HAD FAILED. CORRECTION REQUIRED IS THAT THE RADIATOR AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY HAS TO BE REPLACED AT A TOTAL COST OF $8438.43. I WAS TOLD THAT NISSAN WOULD COVER 70% OF THE COST OF THE REPAIR, HOWEVER REQUIRED THAT I PAY $3000 DOLLARS UP FRONT BEFORE THEY WOULD EVEN ORDER THE PARTS. ONCE I GAVE THEM THE $3000 BY CREDIT CARD BECAUSE A CHECK WAS ACCEPTED, I WAS TOLD IT WILL TAKE THREE WEEKS FOR THE PARTS TO ARRIVE AND THEN ANOTHER TWO DAYS FOR THE INSTALLATION. IN ADDITION, MY EXTENDED WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIRS BECAUSE THE RADIATOR IS NOT A COVERED PART ACCORDING TO THE WARRANTY. ON FEB. 8TH MY WIFE AND I WERE MOVING INTO A NEW PLACE JUST MILES AWAY FROM OUR OLD HOME. WHEN CRUISING IN BETWEEN 40-50 MPH THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING EXTREME VIBRATION IN THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS THEN THAT I ASSUMED IT MIGHT BE A UNIVERSAL JOINT AND/OR THE DRIVE SHAFT. SO WHEN I HAD THE MONEY I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO AAMCO TRANSMISSIONS TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. I HAD TO DROP IT OFF BUT LATER THAT AFTERNOON THE MECHANIC CALLED ME AND TOLD ME IT WAS THE DRIVE SHAFT AND THE FRONTAL U-JOINT. HE REPLACED THE U-JOINT AND RE-BALANCED THE DRIVE SHAFT. I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED BUT JUST A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD I REALIZED IT HADN'T. SO I BROUGHT IT BACK AND THEY TOOK A SECOND LOOK AND TOLD ME IT MAY BE TWO THINGS. EITHER THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS BAD OR THE COOLANT HOSE BUSTED AND THE ANTIFREEZE WAS DRAINING INTO THE TRANSMISSION WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO BLOW OUT. THEY THEN TOLD ME TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION WOULD COST ME AROUND $6,000 WHICH TO ME IS WORTH MORE THAN THE ACTUAL VEHICLE. WHEN I GOT HOME I DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT SURE ENOUGH THE ANTIFREEZE WAS LEAKING INTO THE TRANSMISSION. THE ANTIFREEZE LOOKS LIKE A GREEN APPLE MILKSHAKE IF YOU CAN IMAGINE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR THIS ISSUE NOR WARRANTY COVERAGE. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS EXACT ISSUE. TOLD THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER PLASTIC PART FAILED; ONLY INDICATION IS A WHINE SOUND FROM THE ENGINE. NISSAN ISSUED A TSB TO THEIR DEALERS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, BUT NOTHING TO THE CONSUMER. IF THE TIMING CHAIN FAILS IT WILL CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE ENGINE AND A POSSIBLE CRASH. AN UNKNOWING CONSUMER HAS NO IDEA ABOUT WHAT THIS SOUND MEANS (JUST SOUNDS LIKE A NOISY ENGINE) AND MIGHT HAVE LITTLE WARNING PRIOR TO A TIMING CHAIN FAILURE. THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ON THE TYPE OF ENGINE IN THE XTERRA, IT AFFECTS OTHER MODEL ALSO, AND AT A VERY LOW MILEAGE 50-60K MI. CONSUMERS NEED TO BE NOTIFIED OF THIS DEFECT AND TO LISTEN FOR THE NOISE. NOT EVERYONE TAKES THEIR VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. MOST MECHANICS KNOW THAT TIMING CHAINS ARE SUPPOSED TO LAST WELL OVER 100,000 - 200,000 MILES AND WOULD NEVER SUSPECT THE DEFECT. FAILURE TO CHANGE OUT THE ENTIRE TIMING CHAIN KIT MAY RESULT IN THE TIMING CHAIN BREAKING AND RUPTURING THE OIL PAN. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP THAT THE PLASTIC GUIDES WERE A FAULTY PART BUT IT WAS NOT A RECALL, IF THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY THEY WOULD HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. I DON'T THINK ANY CAR WITH LESS THAN 100K MILES SHOULD NEED SUCH A PRICEY "WEAR AND TEAR" FIX AND I BELIEVE THIS PART IS FAULTY AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. IN ADDITION, SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2010 I HAVE HAD A DIFFERENTIAL SEAL LEAK AND A REAR AXLE SEAL LEAK.
