TRIED TO START CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START, ONLY CRANK. STARTED NEXT MORNING AND HAD IT TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP AND IT WOULD NOT START INTERMITTENTLY. REPAIR SHOP SAID TO TAKE IT HOME BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE OR FIX. I CHECKED THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH CERTAIN GM VEHICLES AND MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING. THERE IS A WAY TO START IT SOMETIMES BY WAITING TEN MINUTES WITH KEY IN ACC AND THEN TURNING OFF AND THEN REMOVING THE KEY AND THEN RE STARTING. THIS IS WORKING BUT NOT ALWAYS. APPARENTLY GM IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT HAS TAKEN NO ACTION TO CORRECT IT. I AM AFRAID THAT I MAY BE STRANDED SOMEWHERE OR THE SECURITY SYSTEM COULD POSSIBLY TURN THE CAR OFF. ALSO THERE IS DISCUSSION THAT THIS MAY ALSO BE A BAD IGNITION SWITCH BUT THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE FOR THE SWITCH, ONLY THE KEY!

UPON PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE IN MARCH OF 2014 I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH IT. ONE ISSUE BEING IT WOULD NOT START. I LET THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM LOOK AT IT AND HE TOOK IT TO A GARAGE THAT HE USUALLY DEALS WITH AND THEY TOLD ME THEY REPLACED THE STARTER. HOWEVER, I'M ALMOST POSITIVE IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL. ANOTHER ISSUE IS THE HORN RANDOMLY STARTED GOING OFF IN THE DRIVEWAY ONE DAY AND NOW THE HORN DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. THE MOST CONCERNING ISSUE IS THAT OF THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS I'VE BEEN HAVING WITH THE CAR. THE PARKING LIGHTS STAY ON, FORCING ME TO HAVE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY EVERY TIME I LEAVE THE CAR FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP BUT THE CONTACT WAS UNSURE OF WHAT THE MECHANIC DID TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE HORN BLEW DAILY BETWEEN 2AM AND 3AM FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 93,000.

AT ABOUT 50K THE TURN SIGNAL CLICKING STARTING WITHOUT USING THE SIGNALS & IS STILL DO IT TODAY. I HAVE NOT TRIED TO FIX IT BECAUSE I HAVE READ SO MANY THING ON THE INTERNET ABOUT COST & THAT IT WAS RECALLED ON OLDER ALERO MODELS. IT HAS FINALLY GOTTEN TO THE POINT THAT THE SIGNALS ONLY WORK PART TIME AND I HAVE TO TURN ON THE HAZARDS TO GET THE TURN SIGNAL TO WORK - ACCIDENT CAUSING I THINK SO. THE OLDS ALERO HAS A DEFECTIVE PASSLOCK THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM. IT SHOWS UP WHEN YOU INSERT YOUR KEY IN THE IGNITION, TURN IT, HEAR THE ENGINE CRANKING, ONLY TO FAIL TO START. THE DASHBOARD'S RED WARNING LIGHT, SECURITY, FLASHES ON AND OFF. IT BELIEVES IT IS BEING STOLEN, THUS SHUTTING OFF THE GAS TO THE ENGINE. THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY STATED 4 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT MY CAR, WHICH I PURCHASE USED FROM A DEALER, I BELIEVE IM THE 2ND OWER. THIS ISSURE HAPPENS ABOUT ONCE OR TWICE EVERY 3 WEEKS OR SO. MY DAD ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS THE BATTERY CONTACTS BECAUSE THEY WERE LOOSE, SO HE TIGHTENED THEM UP, THEN IT TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A MONTH. THE ANOTHER STRANGE ISSUE CAME UP, ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO, AS MY CAR SAT IN PARK FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS, JUST OUT OF THE BLUE THE HORN STARTED TO "BLOW" LIKE THE ALARM WAS SET OFF, BUT THE LIGHTS WERE NOT FLASHING SO IT WASNT THAT, ABOUT 20 MINUTES IT DID THIS TIL IT BLEW THE FUSE FOR THE HORN. AND NOW IM WITHOUT A HORN IN MY CAR, WHICH IS NOT VERY SAFE. SO I CHANGED THE FUSED, THE HORN WORKED FOR 1 DAY, THEN BLEW AGAIN, I CHANGED THE ACTUAL HORN AND ANOTHER FUSE, AND JUST 3 DAYS AGO, I HEARD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, MY HORN GOING OFF AGAIN FOR NO REASON, AND THE FUSE BLEW AGAIN, DRIVING WITH NO HORN. I TRIED CLEANING THE IGINITION SWITCH, REPLACED SPARK PLUGS, AIR FILTER, ETC. THE KEYS DO NOT HAVE THE MICRO CHIP IN THEM, SO I KNOW IT IS NOT THE KEY. *AK
CAR DASH LIGHTS, CD PLAYER, AND AC UNIT DO NOT TURN ON WHEN CAR STARTS. THIS USUALLY OCCURS AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN AND IS WARM. AFTER LEAVING THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES AND THEN STARTING THE CAR AGAIN THAT IS WHEN THE PROBLEM USUALLY OCCURS. THE DELAY FOR THE STARTING OF THE DASH AND ACCESSORIES IS ANYWHERE FROM 5 SECONDS TO 1 MINUTE. *NM
AUTO STALLED OUT TWICE WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO YIELD, STOPPING COMPLETELY IN TRAFFIC AREAS SO THAT THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE PUSHED ASIDE. AFTER THE FIRST TIME THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED. THE SECOND TIME, THE BATTERY WAS JUMPED AND THE CAR STARTED. THE ALTERNATOR WAS TESTED AT THAT TIME AND INDICATED EXCESS CURRENT FLOW. DURING THIS PERIOD OF TWO WEEKS, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS INTERMITTENTLY, THE PARKED VEHICLE WOULD CRANK BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. EACH TIME, WITH NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE WOULD START AND WOULD PERFORM FOR A DAY OR SO THEN REPEAT THE PROBLEM. INSPECTIONS INDICATED THAT THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR WERE FINE AND THERE WERE NO OTHER INDICATORS OF CAUSE. FINALLY, WHEN BROUGHT TO A DEALERSHIP, THEY FOUND THAT THE IGNITION CYLINDER HAD FAILED AND THE PASS LOCK SECURITY SYSTEM WAS SHUTTING DOWN THE CAR BECAUSE IT DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEY. THE CYLINDER WAS REPLACED AND NEW KEYS CREATED, BUT THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. FURTHER INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT THE IGNITION MODULE HAS FAILED ALSO. *JB

THE INTAKE GASKETS AND OIL DRIVE O-RING LEAKED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, ROCKER COVER GASKETS AND OIL PUMP DRIVESHAFT COVER SEAL. THE AIR BAG COVER WARPED. THE TOP OF THE DASH WAS WRINKLED AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL PAN WAS PEELING FROM IT'S BACKING. THE DEALER REPLACED THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSEMBLY AND TRANSFERRED ALL COMPONENTS. *NM

IN EVERY OCURRENCE, IT TAKES APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES BEFORE IT WILL START BACK UP. AT HIGH SPEEDS, IT IS EXTREMELY TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. WE'VE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER, UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY, THE REQUIRED 4 TIMES UNDER THE LEMON LAW PROCESS. THE DEALER CANNOT ASCERTAIN, NOR FIX THE PROBLEM. IT HAPPENED TO THE DEALER AT LEAST ONCE WHEN WE TOOK IT IN. I DOUBT THEY WILL ADMIT IT, HOWEVER, MY WIFE WAS WITNESS. THE CAR IS A 2003. EVEN THOUGH I BOUGHT IT IN JULY 2003, IT WAS CONSIDERED A USED CAR. GM HAS DENIED OUR CLAIM SINCE THE LEMON LAW DOES NOT APPLY TO USED CARS. THE CAR HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY PARKED SINCE NOVEMBER 2003.
