ON MARCH 4, 2004, A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR MY CAR - COMPONENTS FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY: HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V110000. NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA04003. I WENT TO THE DEALER IN 2004 AND THEY REPLACED MY FUEL RAIL. THEY DID NOT REPLACE THE FUEL RETURN LINE. THE RECALL STATES "ADDITIONALLY, THE 1995 MODEL YEAR USES A UNIQUE UNDERHOOD FUEL RETURN LINE THAT MAY CRACK. CRACKING OF THE FUEL RAIL OR RETURN LINE TUBING CAN RESULT IN A FUEL LEAK INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CONSEQUENCE: FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE." MY CAR IS A 1997. THE RETURN LINE HAS, SO FAR, CRACKED FOUR TIMES AND EACH TIME I WAS FORTUNATE TO NOT HAVE THE CAR CATCH ON FIRE WHILE I DROVE TO MY MECHANIC WHO WAS ABLE TO SPLICE IT. IT IS NOW TOO SHORT TO SPLICE ANYMORE AND I HAVE NO DOUBT IT WILL CRACK AGAIN. TODAY I WENT TO A LOCAL DEALER AND HE SAID REPAIR/REPLACEMENT OF THE LINE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. IT IS THE SAME DANGEROUS PROBLEM FOR WHICH THE 1995 AURORA WAS RECALLED. I AM RETIRED AND LIVING SOLELY ON SOCIAL SECURITY. I DO NOT HAVE MONEY TO GET THIS FIXED (THE DEALER SAID MINIMUM $500 AND COULD GO BEYOND $1,000). I SEE NO REASON WHY THIS SHOULD NOT BE COVERED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD BE SINCE THEY FIGURED THIS OUT IN 2004 AND MY CAR WAS MADE IN 1997... THE DATE ON THE PLASTIC FUEL LINES IS 5/10/1996. *TR

I HAVE A 1997 OLDSMOBILE AURORA (VIN [XXX] WITH A RECALLED FUEL RAIL. THE FUEL RAIL SPRING A PINHOLE LEAK, WHICH WAS SPRAYING ATOMIZED GASOLINE ON THE ENGINE BLOCK. THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS FUEL RAIL, BUT WHEN I CALLED THE OLDSMOBILE RECALL HOTLINE, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE REPAIR HAD ALREADY BEEN PERFORMED. SINCE THE FUEL RAIL WAS STILL THE OLD STYLE NYLON ONE AND NOT THE STAINLESS STEEL ONE SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL, I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE SERVICE WAS PERFORMED (AW GOLDEN IN READING, PA) TO INQUIRE AS TO WHY THE NYLON FUEL RAIL WAS STILL IN PLACE. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE FORMER OWNER HAD NEVER COME BACK TO GET THE RECALL DONE. I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF THIS PROBLEM UNTIL I HAD FUEL LEAKING ONTO MY ENGINE BLOCK AND DUE TO OLDSMOBILE'S SYSTEM, WHICH HAS THE RECALL MARKED AS COMPLETE, I CANNOT GET THE RECALL SERVICE DONE. WHAT GOOD ARE SAFETY RECALLS IF THE MANUFACTURER CAN MARK THE RECALL COMPLETE WITHOUT PERFORMING THE WORK? THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALER INSPECTED HER VEHICLE AND REPLACED THE ENGINE FUEL RAIL. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE REPAIR, THE CONTACT SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. THE DEALER STATED THAT, ACCORDING TO THE REMEDY, THEY WERE NOT REQUIRED TO INSTALL A REVISED CHASSIS FUEL RETURN LINE AND THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY $400 FOR THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AGAIN. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 200,000.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, BLACK SMOKE EMANATED FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. WITHIN 8 SECONDS OF THE CONTACT EXITING THE VEHICLE, FLAMES WERE OBSERVED COMING FROM UNDER THE FRONT WHEEL WELLS, AND FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE HOOD MELTED, THE ENGINE WAS BURNED COMPLETELY, THE FRONT AXLE MELTED TO THE POINT OF PREVENTING ANY MOVEMENT OF THE FRONT WHEELS, AND THE ENTIRE DASH WAS MELTED. THE VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS. POLICE AND FIRE REPORTS WERE TAKEN. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS A FUEL LEAK. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL #04V110000 WHICH PERTAINS TO THE PIPINGS AND FITTINGS TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.

APPEARS TO BE A HIGH-HAZARD SITUATION THAT COULD EASILY RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, INJURY AND/OR DEATH. *NM

FUEL WAS POURING OUT OF MY ENGINE AS I WAS SITTING IN A PARKING SPACE. I LITERALLY SAW MY FUEL GAUGE GO FROM FULL TO NEARLY 1/4 IN ABOUT 2 MINUTES. I WAS LUCKY THERE WAS A FIRE STATION RIGHT THERE TO ASSIST ME. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE LOCAL GM MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE SEEN ALOT OF THESE PARTICULAR PROBLEMS (FUEL RAIL). WHEN I CONTACTED GM, THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION ON THIS PROBLEM TO WARRANT A SEARCH. I SAID THAT MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR THE NIGHT BEFORE AND IT COULD HAVE BURNED HER TO DEATH. MY WIFE WENT TO PICK UP A PASSENGER (HER GRANDDAUGHTER) AND TO GO SHOPPING. SHE SMELLED GAS WHILE DRIVING, AND ANOTHER MOTORIST FLAGGED HER DOWN TO WARN HER THAT SHE WAS LEAKING GAS. SHE STOPPED IN A PARKING LOT, LEFT THE VEHICLE, AND CALLED ME. WHEN I ARRIVED, THERE WAS A LARGE PUDDLE OF GASOLINE UNDER THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE (3' ACROSS). UPON INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE, THE ENTIRE ENGINE AND FIREWALL WERE COVERED WITH GAS. TURNING THE IGNITION KEY, GAS SPRAYED HEAVILY FROM THE PLASTIC FUEL LINE BETWEEN 2 OF THE INJECTIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SERVICE CENTER, AND REMARKS MADE BY THE MECHANIC (THAT THE REPLACEMENT FOR THE PLASTIC LINES WAS STEEL) MADE ME SUSPICIOUS ABOUT A RECALL. MY INTERNET SEARCH LEAD ME TO YOUR WEBSITE, AND SEEMED TO POINT TO GM RECALL NO. 04014; BUT IN SUBSEQUENT CONTACT WITH OLDSMOBILE, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR MY VINE [XX]. MY VEHICLE (1997 AURORA), ENGINE, MALFUNCTION, AND CORRECTIVE ACTION RECOMMENDED ALL MATCH YOUR RECALL NOTICE. HAD I NOT REPLACED AN ARCING SPARK PLUG WIRE 3 WEEKS EARLIER, THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. THIS RECALL MAY NEED TO BE EXPANDED TO PREVENT POTENTIAL LOSS OF LIFE. I PURCHASED A VEHICLE FORM CHESROWN GMC/KIA IN COLUMBUS OHIO. I BOUGHT IT ON JUNE 3RD 2002 PAID $10500.00+ $892.00 (EXTEND WARRANTY)WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR I OPTED FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVE HAD FUEL PUMP, FEUL SWITCH, FEUL LINE, FUEL INJECTORS OF MY CAR GO BAD (MORE THAN ONCE!). WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON A HEAVILY TRAVELED STREET THE ENGINE JUST STOPPED! MY HUSBAND GOT OUT TO PUSH THE VEHICLE PUTTING HIM IN DANGER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE OUT THE NEXT DAY AND ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE ENGINE CEASED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THE TECHNICIANS SAID I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS & THEY FINALLY CONCLUDED IT HAD A BAD FUEL PUMP. THEY REPLACED IT. LESS THAN 24 HOURS LATER, I WAS AT THE SHOP AGAIN! THE FUEL PUMP THAT THEY PUT IN DIDN'T WORK EITHER. I HAVE A SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEM WHICH REQUIRES I BE ON BLOOD THINNERS. AN ACCIDENT FOR A NORMAL PERSON WOULD BE HARMFUL, FOR ME IT WOULD MEAN ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR. I HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TRYING TO FIX IT. THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR BETWEEN THE PLASTIC AND METAL FUEL LINE DISCONNECTED SUDDENLY AND SHOWERED GASOLINE OVER THE ENGINE AND STOPPED THE MOTOR. THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A FIRE WHILE ON A BUSY STREET. THERE WAS NO EARLIER INDICATION OF A LEAK OR PROBLEM.*AK
