THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT DRIVE WHEN PUT IN GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION WHINES BUT THE VAN WILL NOT MOVE. WHEN THE VAN FINALLY GOES INTO GEAR IT WILL NOT SHIFT, IT STICKS IN GEARS. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS SOFT AND GOES TO THE FLOOR, BUT WILL NOT STOP QUICKLY IN AN EMERGENCY. THE ORIGINAL PAINT IS ALSO PEELING TO BARE METAL AND IS RUSTING, THE CLEAR COAT IS BUBBLING AND THE PAINT IS STARTING TO PEEL ON THE HOOD.

TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS BEGAN AT 3800 MILES. THESE INCLUDED: ENGINE RACING, KICKING, HARD SHIFTS, ERRATIC SHIFTING, JERKING, HARSH UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS, ALL ON INTERMITTENT BASIS. SEVERAL VISITS TO DEALERSHIP WERE FUTILE, WE WERE TOLD WE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE AND THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO "ADJUST". ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION FAILED ON 7/11/96 WHILE ENTIRE FAMILY WAS ON BOARD TRAVELLING ON FREEWAY. DEALERSHIP REBUILT TRANS. VEHICLE WORKED WELL FOR AWHILE BUT EVENTUALLY STARTED HAVING "SPELLS" OF ROUGH SHIFTING . PROBLEMS ESCALATED AND WE TRIED A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR TWICE IN ONE MONTH, LAST TIME ON11/8/99. TRANSMISSION CONTINUED ERRATIC PERFORMANCE. HARSHNESS OF DOWNSHIFTS HAD BECOME BAD ENOUGH FOR SEAT BELTS TO RESTRAIN PASSENGERS. ENGINE WOULD GO PAST 4000RPM BEFORE SHIFTING. SOMETIMES TURNING OR GOING OVER A BUMP WOULD SET TRANSMISSION "OFF". INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SUGGESTED NEW TRANSMISSION CONTROLLER, THAT WAS INSTALLED 10/4/00. TRANSMISSION PERFORMANCE HAS NOT IMPROVED. TRANS. STILL STICKS, BUCKS, AND JERKS. THIS IS A WELL-MAINTAINED VEHICLE THAT HAS UNDERGONE ALL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SINCE PURCHASE. THIS VEHICLE CARRIES A FAMILY OF SEVEN. WE DO NOT TRUST THIS VEHICLE ENOUGH LATELY TO VENTURE TOO FAR FROM HOME. CHRYSLER AND ITS LOCAL DEALERSHIP CLOSE THEIR EARS AND WAIT FOR US TO GO AWAY.

MY UNDERSTANDING IS THESE TYPES OF FAILURES ARE COMMON, THOUGH CHRYSLER IS NOT ADMITTING IT. IN ADDITION, THE MOUNTS HOLDING THE TRANSMISSION IN PLACE ALSO REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. PREVIOUSLY THE ENGINE MOUNT ON THE VAN FAILED. FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND MOTOR MOUNTS POSE A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN FOR RIDERS OF THE VEHICLE. THE OTHER FAILURES, THOUGH COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING TO REPAIR, DID NOT SEEM TO POSE A MAJOR SAFETY RISK. *AK

SITUATIONS RANGED FROM ANNOYING (NOT ABLE TO BACK UP AT GAS PUMP) TO DANGEROUS. WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN NOT ABLE TO GET OUT OF LANE ON FAST, BUSY ROAD WHERE CONSTRUCTION FORCED THEM OUT OF LANE (ROUTE 33 IN GREENLAND/PORTSMOUTH NH, IN OCTOBER, 1999). OTHER TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN NOT SHIFTING UP FROM 2ND TO THIRD WHILE COLD (50,000 MILES), AND HAS ALWAYS SHIFTED LOUDLY AND WITH A THUD. SITUATIONS HAVE BECOME INCREASINGLY MORE DANGEROUS, AND WE FEEL THAT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN A 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. THANK YOU.

THIS HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MAKE AWFUL NOISE. TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REBUILT. THE SECOND TRANSMISSION HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED AS OF YET. ALSO THE REAR WIPER MOTOR NO LONGER WORKS AND YOU CAN ONLY PURCHASE A NEW MOTOR FROM A DEALER.

#1: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE LIGHT BEGAN INTERMITTENTLY TO TURN ON. BRAKE PEDAL OPERATION "FEEL" WOULD CHANGE SIGNIFICANTLY. FOR A 30,000 MILE SEQUENCE MAINTENANCE CHECK-UP AFTER 60,000 MILES WAS REACHED AT THE DEALER. THE PROBLEMS OF THE BRAKES WERE REPORTED. THE SERVICE SHOP ADISED THE BRAKES WERE CHECKED, AND FOUND TO BE OKAY. WITHIN A FEW DAYS, THE SAME PROBLEMS APPEARED. THE MINIVAN WAS RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THIS TIME THEY INDICATED, WHICH THEY DID NOT EARLIER, THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ABS SYSTEM (OF WHICH I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED) AND THE REPAIRS WOULD BE MADE FOR FREE. SOON AFTER, THE SAME PROBLEMS OCCURRED. THE VEHICULE WAS RETURNED AGAIN TO THE SAME DEALER SERVICE SHOP, THE BRAKES INSPECTED, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RELATED TO A CRACK IN A TIMING DEVICE ATTACHED TO THE FRONT AXLE, AND IT COULD BE REPLACED ONLY BY REPLACING THE AXLE, INVOLVING OVER $800 CHARGE. I REFUSED THE SERVICE, BUT WAS CHARGED OVER $40 FOR "BRAKE INSPECTION". I AM VERY UPSET WITH HOW THIS HAS BEEN HANDLED. PROBLEM #2. AFTER A PASSENGER GOT OUT OF THE MINIVAN FROM THE FRONT RIGHT SEAT, HE SHUT THE DOOR AND IT DID NOT LATCH. THE PROBLEM WAS TRACED TO THE DOOR WELD TO THE CAR FRAME HAD FAILED. THIS APPEARS TO BE A POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEM, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISED THAT THERE HAD BEEN SEVERAL SIMILAR CASES. HOWEVER, CHRYSLER REFUSED TO AGREE THAT THE WELD WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND WOULD NOT PAY, IN WHOLE OR IN PART, THE COST OF THE REPAIR. #3. A DISAGREEABLE ODOR IS COMING OUT OF THE AIRCONDITIONING DUCTS, MOST STRONGLY UPON THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF OPERATION. THE SERVICE CENTER CLAIMS THAT ALL THEY CAN DO IS MASK THE SMELL TEMPORARILY BUT IT WILL COME BACK. THEY HAVE SEEN THIS WITH OTHER VEHICLES AS WELL. I AM CONCERNED IF THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR MAY REPRESENT HARM TO THE HEALTH OF THE PASSENGERS. *AK
